SBDC Success Client of the Year Cyndi Wells was growing frustrated by being forced to drive to Santa Fe to purchase dog food after the pet store in Los Alamos closed. She thought the community deserved a local pet store that carries quality supplies and nutritious foods, has good prices, and is a fun, clean place to shop with friendly, knowledgeable staff. So, the process of conceiving of Pet Pangaea and making the store a reality began in September 2004. She first visited with a counselor at the UNM-LA Small Business Development Center in October of 2004 to make sure she had all of the correct paperwork for forming the company. She planned the store from the perspective of what would make her happy as the customer. Also, she holds a strong belief that, as a member of the community, the store must support local organizations that promote adoption and responsible pet ownership. And, when Pet Pangaea chooses which products to offer, finding products that are ecologically friendly and made in the U.S.A. is an important priority. Moving quickly, Cyndi was able to open her doors on February 19th, 2005. Pet Pangaea has experienced tremendous growth over its five years in Los Alamos. Revenue has increased by 280% from year one to year five. Pet Pangaea employs 5 employees and has undergone several expansions. Initially offering 1,000 products, Pet Pangaea now carries over 6,000 items to choose from. Next year, Pet Pangaea, plans to expand again, increasing its retail footprint from 900 square feet to over 4,000 square feet. This major expansion will include seveal exciting new offerings including a new aquatics department, dog self wash stations, and an underwater treadmill for doggy fitness. When asked about her involvement with the UNM-LA Small Business Development Center, Cyndi was very excited about her recognition and said: Continued on Page 4

LACDC News Los Alamos Creative Culture District Steering Committee

Trinity on The Hill Kelley Hall

Dr. Li Acupuncture

A new committee of Los Alamos MainStreet is forming to guide the initiation and development of Los Alamos' newly designated Arts & Cultural District. The Los Alamos Creative Cultural District (LACCD) received State designation in August. A requirement of the designation is the creation of a plan for the district during 2010. Los Alamos MainStreet was awarded a $35,000 State grant in September to provide resources for the planning effort. You can read more about the LACCD concept in the application that was made to receive the designation. There is a link to the application at http://LACCD.blogspot.com. Partners in the successful application were the Los Alamos Arts Council, the Art Center at Fuller Lodge, Los Alamos County, the Fuller Lodge/Historic District Board, and the Chamber. The LACCD is conceived to extend from Knecht Street to the Historic District along Central Avenue. The steering committee will work on developing an agenda and action plan for implementing the LACCD, and then pursuing implementation of the plan. The goal will be to share the unique historical, cultural, and creative heritage of our community while developing a more vibrant pedestrian core to our downtown. Individuals and organizations interested in getting involved in the steering committee should contact Audrey Garduno, Steering Committee Coordinator, at 661-4886, audrey@losalamos.org.

CHAMBER BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Los Alamos Historical Society Museum Shop The Los Alamos Historical Society’s Museum Shop is a local asset known to perhaps as many visitors as locals, since the museum gets about 34, 000 visitors each year. The Los Alamos Historical society has published dozens of books, mainly by local authors. In addition to their own publications, the shop carries a large selection of other books pertaining to Manhattan Project history and New Mexico history. The Los Alamos Historical Society has been pursuing its mission to “keep alive the unique cultural, scientific and historical legacy of Los Alamos and related regions” by operating the museum and shop, sponsoring lectures, maintaining extensive archives, helping with research and maintaining historic structures for many years. The Museum shop was completely remodeled in October of ’08, and now is bright and airy, but also able to accommodate more unique gift items along with books and souvenirs. The historic photos from the Historical Society’s collection are the source for many of the cards and bookmarks sold in the shop. “These are things you won’t find anywhere else,” museum director Hedy Dunn says. The shop carries lots of games, books and educational toys for children along with their more serious offerings. They have lovely holiday cards depicting Fuller Lodge in the snow, and also postcards and souvenir patches. Historical Society membership, at a cost of $35 per year for seniors, $40 for individuals, and $50 for family membership, entitles people to a 10 percent discount in the shope, along with many other benefits. Located at 1050 Bathtub Row, the Museum and its shop are open Monday through Saturday from 10 to 4, and Sundays from 1 to 4. For more information, go to the Historical Society’s website: www.losalamoshistory.org

Chamber News

Member opportunities CommunityMatters Initiative The response to a new year of CommunityMatters has been overwhelmingly positive. Only two of last year’s participants have declined to participate for the new year, and we’ve added several new members. This initiative was designed to strengthen the ties between our members and the community, and to that end, we’ve been able to facilitate a wide range of projects. Projects include a coupon booklet that goes out to visitors and new hires, a series of ads at the Reel Deal that highlight “think Los Alamos and White Rock first,” a community assessment project that will have long-reaching effects and supporting Assets in Action. A new feature of CommunityMatters is the 3/50 Initiative, where people are encouraged to choose three local businesses they would not want to live without, and spend $50 in each establishment. To promote the initiative, and also to get people to take advantage of our great business directory and calendar on fyiLA.com, we’re offering a contest with a

reward of three $50 Chamber checks. Check out fyiLA.com for more information on the 3/50 initiative and the contest. The most notable achievement of the CommunityMatters initiative has been the production of “the Essence of Los Alamos and White Rock.” A new volume of “the Essence” will begin in December, with a renewed focus on telling the stories of our community in such a way that people will see the value of supporting local business. Those who have signed up will be seeing a publication schedule with ad specifications arriving in your mailboxes during the last week of October, and the ads will be due in mid-November for a December-January publication. Keep an eye out for CommunityMatters projects and programs in the coming year- we’re always open to suggestions about how to strengthen the ties between our members and the community.

CommunityMatters 3/50 Feature Added to CommunityMatters Think of local businesses that you would hate to discover were not in existence any longer. They could be merchants, restaurants, or snack places. They could also be service businesses that help you take care of your home, your car, your body, or your peace of mind. Make a mental list. Now, think about three of the businesses on your mental list that you have not visited or interacted with recently. This consciousness-raising exercise is at the core of the 3/50 Project, a grass-roots initiative aimed at supporting local economies … three businesses at a time. The “50” part of the 3/50 name suggests spending $50 a month with each of the three businesses to support them and help to sustain them. Making a conscious effort to support local businesses can pay significant dividends for our community’s economy as well. In our community, $50 in expenditures by 50% of the people who work in our community results in $450,000 in revenues, a very significant number. 6

The Chamber, as part of CommunityMatters, will be promoting the 3/50 project locally through a variety of methods including articles in The Essence, promotional materials at member businesses, flyers distributed at events, and a drawing for Chamber Checks. The project depends on community awareness and consciousness-raising, so its success will depend in large part on collective effort to get the word out. Will you display or distribute promotional materials at your place of business? This could entail putting up a poster, placing tent cards on tables or at the cash register, giving handbills to customers, or putting information in your newsletter. Posters, tent cards, and handbills are available upon request from the Chamber. Contact Claire Roybal at 661-4836, claire@losalamos.org to request materials.

Katy's Corner In the September/October edition of this newsletter, executive director Kevin Holsapple wrote about several of the issues we are involved in, advocating on behalf of the business community: working for better highway signage, for workable downtown streets standards, and continuing to provide input on the Trinity Site Revitalization project. These are by no means all of the issues we are involved with. The Los Alamos County Council asked that a committee be formed to map out a plan to site historic sculptures in the downtown area, beginning with a life-sized cast bronze sculpture of J. Robert Oppenheimer in 2010. The committee has come up with a set of criteria for these sculptures that includes placing them in their historical context, as well as in safe, visible locations, along a defined route. I’ve been serving on that committee, where I’m advocating to make sure that there is a connection between the sculpture sites and the business community. November/December 2009

I’ve also been a part of the White Rock Master Plan Implementation Steering Committee, which is looking at revitalizing White Rock. The plan to revitalize White Rock was approved by council in 2007, and the committee has worked ever since to bring capital improvement projects to the county and to brainstorm ideas for bringing White Rock back to life. An alignment study is already underway for SR4 as it goes through town, which we need before we can beautify the area. The old fire station on Rover Boulevard will be torn down soon- it couldn’t be saved and used for other businesses because of asbestos contamination. In the coming months the committee will be looking at helping to create the request for proposals for a new visitor center, and also reassessing the 2007 master plan in light of the current conditions. Your input is always welcome, either by contacting a member of the committee such as myself, by sending your comments to the Community Development Department, or by attending a public meeting. A full list of county projects can be found on the county’s website, www. losalamosnm.us/projects.

Los Alamos Farmers' Market The Los Alamos Farmers' Market is now a project of Los Alamos MainStreet. Market Manager Cindy Talamantes approached MainStreet this summer to express her interest in affiliating the market with LACDC and its MainStreet program. The market has had a long and successful history in Los Alamos but has never been formally affiliated with a Los Alamos community organization. Cindy has operated the market for the past several years as a sole proprietorship. On advice from the NM Farmer's Market Association, she began investigating affiliation earlier this year. LACDC's interest in the arrangement is to assist in ensuring continuation of a quality market and in seeing the market continue as a great downtown event. "The affiliation with MainStreet is a natural." says LACDC Executive Director Kevin Holsapple. "MainStreet is all about downtown vitality and the Farmers' Market is a great contributor to downtown vitality." The market complements a variety of events facilitated by MainStreet in the downtown each year including Next Big Idea, Fair & Rodeo Parade, Halloweekend, and WinterFest. MainStreet also facilitates small grant awards for a variety of other downtown events, activities, and promotions each year. Funding from a LACDC contract with Los Alamos County provides support for many MainStreet activities. Cindy Talamantes will continue to manage the market for MainStreet. An advisory committee consisting of vendor and community representatives will assist. As part of the process

of formalizing this affiliation, LACDC participated in a general meeting with market vendors to discuss the change and answer questions. "A take-away from the meeting was that the vendors are proud of the market, value their relationship with the community and their customers, and want to see the market continue to improve," says Holsapple. There will be monthly Winter Markets at Fuller Lodge this winter beginning on December 10th and continuing on the second Thursday of each month (8 am - noon) until the outdoor season begins again in May. For the winter season, the Cindy is looking for local artists and crafters interested in selling their wares at the markets. Email lacdc@losalamos.org if you are interested in more information about this opportunity or if you have ideas for how to increase the benefits of the market to a vibrant downtown.business district.

Grants Available For Curb Appeal Projects One conclusion of the Chamber of Commerce’s community assessment presentation this Spring is that our community could benefit from improvement of business curb appeal. Los Alamos MainStreet agreed with this conclusion and was successful in pursuing funding from Los Alamos County to use for matching grants to downtown businesses that will work on improving their curb appeal, Los Alamos MainStreet is inviting applications for matching grants. A link to application instructions and forms is available online at www.LAMainStreet.com. Grants of up to $500 are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible projects will address curb appeal improvements such as signage, landscaping, sidewalk or façade improvements. The application materials include a curb appeal self-assessment, a resource listing, and a guide to container planting in Los

8

Alamos County developed by the local New Mexico State University extension office. Contact Brian Farmer at LACDC, 661-4862 if you need assistance. You’ll see evidence around town of curb appeal work that has been done this summer by many individual shopkeepers and property owners, including the annual marigold planting by Central Park Square, the flowering basket displays and other features of the Los Alamos Central Avenue streetscape project, and the pedestrian wayfinding kiosks that have been installed along Central . The curb appeal grants are intended to provide additional incentive and assistance to these efforts.

The LAMVB, a program of the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation, operates the Visitor Center in Los Alamos and the White Rock Tourist & Information Center (WRTIC). The LAMVB also produces and distributes advertising and marketing materials such as the Los Alamos Visitor Guide. We also maintain the online visitor guide at visit.losalamos.com.

LTAB Presents DDI Presentation On September 30, the Lodger's Tax Advisory Board (LTAB) got together to view the DVD of Destination Development Inc.'s (DDI) presentation at the Best Western Hilltop House. DDI was engaged by the Chamber of Commerce to perform a community assessment and gave the presentation to the public last spring resulting in an informative and entertaining presentation. Their research provides many ideas for actions to improve how our community is perceived by others, including improving our store front "Curb Appeal." This viewing of the DVD by the board members was also followed by discussion and ideas on how to utilize the information.

Gozaic Site Launched

The Los Alamos area has a new presence on the internet aimed at cultural and heritage travelers. Gozaic.com was launched in October at an event hosted by the National Heritage Preservation Trust in New York at the Four Seasons restaurant. Gozaic is a project of the National Trust that aims to be the definitive source of information for and place for social networking between heritage and cultural travelers. The site has a built-in communication channel with the National Trust's tens of thousands of members -people with a strong interest in history and culture. Los Alamos Meeting and Visitor Bureau (LAMVB) is a founding destination partner of Gozaic.com and has established an attractive presence to promote Los Alamos on the website. Visitors to the site may post reviews of places to see and things to do in Los Alamos as well as post pictures. Submissions that will help to show off our community will be very helpful. Go to www.gozaic.com and click on "Explore" to navigate to the Los Alamos site. Quarterly "Los Alamos Attractions" Meeting The LAMVB and Chamber convened representatives of "place-based" attractions for an information sharing meeting in late September. The forum provided an opportunitiy for sharing about the status and upcoming actvities of each place. The group plans to continue to meet on a quarterly basis. Attendees/topics included: LACDC (Chamber,MainStreet, LAMVB) - Discussed a signage improvement project being advocated with the County. State designation of a "Creative Cultural District" in Los Alamos. Upgrade to visit.losalamos.com to allow individual visitors to create a notebook of attractions, businesses, events, and coupons they are interested in. PEEC- Collaboration with Bandelier to put on a "Festival" in October (see calendar) PAJARITO MOUNTAIN - Good progress on increasing year-round activities and usage. Continuation of ski package collaborations with lodgers. Snow making anticipated next year. Discussion about desire for improving marketing efforts. BRADBURY MUSEUM - work with the Historical Museum to create a shared brochure. Survey work being accomplished. HISTORICAL MUSEUM - Romero Cabin renovations. Oppenheimer House future.
