The Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce is hosting our annual Chamber Golf Tournament benefiting the United Way. Sponsors are included in all promotion of the tournament and are invited to further promote their organization at the event. Sponsorship donations range from as little as $150 to $1,500. Can’t make a monetary donation? Donate products, services, or promotional items to gain visibility and give golfers a reason to visit you after the event. Players are given tickets in which may or may not match prizes on the prize table. All players have to browse prizes to see if they won. All donations are tax deductible. What is a golf tournament without players? With an easy donation of $90 players are treated with breakfast from Ruby K's, a golf cart, a chance a loads of door prizes and a Central Avenue Grill fajita lunch. LACDC and Chamber Advocacy Trinity Site Revitalization Project Executive Director Kevin Holsapple serves on the County’s Trinity RFP Committee, an ad hoc sounding board and advisory group to County staff for matters related to the Trinity Site Revitalization Project. The committee also includes representation from our Board and individuals affiliated with several member organizations. This group has been involved with the project over a long period of time and possesses a deep appreciation of the complexities involved in the initiative. The Chamber and LACDC support the advice given by this group to the County Council. Key features of this advice: • The Trinity Site Revitalization Project and the partnership between the Los Alamos Public Schools and the County remains a critical opportunity for our community. If realized, it will make our community a more inviting place to live and thrive. Not to act on this opportunity invites the increasing exasperation of many of our residents and the loss of residents and their families who will choose to live elsewhere. • Reaffirm and sustain the originating objectives for the Trinity Site Project including generating long-term revenue streams for Los Alamos Public Schools, increasing retail and entertainment opportunities for residents and visitors, improving opportunities for locally-owned businesses, and contributing to continued implementation of the Downtown Master Plan. • Make the site ready for construction by June 2010 with the expeditious transfer of functions, comprehensive vacating of buildings, and consequent demolition. Achieving construction readiness of the site removes complexity from the deal and puts us in the best possible position to negotiate with a developer and tenants. • Accept the reality of the current economic recession and its impacts on reaching mutually acceptable agreements and conditions with a developer. Until the site is construction-ready, exercise patience during the economic recovery to improve developer options and better pricing. • Remain open to continued negotiations with Boyer while the site is being made construction-ready. We believe the frustration in reaching an acceptable agreement with the Boyer Company would be no different with any other reputable developer given the current economic difficulties. There is no downside in continuing to negotiate with Boyer while the site is still being cleared. • Lastly, it may be necessary for the County to contribute towards the development of public amenities related to the Trinity Site Project, not to subsidize the fundamental enterprise, but rather to achieve the quality and character of development desired by the community. The Chamber view is that any such contribution should be matched by like contribution in other areas of the downtown for similar purposes.

Highway Directional Signage The Chamber has been involved in advocating for improved signage in the community that will help travelers to know how to get to commercial areas. A set of recommendations addressing signage beginning at the White Rock Y and covering the loop of NM 4, NM 501, NM 502, and West Road through the County have been provided to County staff. The recommendations came from inputs from members, visitors, and the community assessment sponsored by the Chamber in April. The County expects to provide a response to the recommendations by mid-September that will include working with the Department of Energy and State Highway Department on signage improvements. There is also a discussion underway about following up this effort with a more comprehensive wayfinding signage review and upgrade throughout the County.
March 23rd We were able to get eight other businesses involved in our promotional event. We should have word soon whether we got the MainStreet Small Projects Grant.
Downtown Streets Standards The Chamber participates on the County’s Downtown Streets Standards Committee which is working toward standards to ensure an effective street system in the downtown. Access to businesses, effective connections between the areas of the downtown, and support for the Downtown Plan framework have been key goals in this advocacy. The County is preparing an RFP to select a consultant to perform a corridor study for NM 502 (Trinity Drive in the downtown) and the committee has provided input into this process. The corridor study would be a comprehensive look at design options that would balance the goals for the road. The goals we have advocated for have been adopted into this effort.
April 17th Talked with Katy from the Chamber and she let me know about a traffic catcher page. We don’t have a webpage yet so this service will come in handy. After uploading a couple of pictures and adding some information about Sparky’s I was able to have a place to send customers to online. The best thing is that this service is FREE with my Chamber Membership.
April 4th The Chamber hosts an annual event called ChamberFest in which I can promote Sparky’s. They surround chamber members with fun activities such as: car shows, live music and games for the kids. We are planning on having an activity for kids and adults at our booth that promotes the products and services of Sparky’s.

CHAMBER BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Dr. Li Liu, or Dr. Lee as she is known, has brought an Eastern view of health and wellbeing to Los Alamos with her Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Clinic, now located at 1460 Trinity, behind Urgent Care. Dr. Lee practices the acupuncture techniques and herbal medicine she studied in Beijing, where she also studied Western medicine. This combination of Eastern and Western techniques benefits local patients because Dr. Lee can understand what patients have already tried in addition to assessing their well-being through different eyes. Member opportunities New Feature Added to CommunityMatters Initiative The Los Alamos Chamber’s CommunityMatters initiative has aimed to support creating and enhancing the connections between our members and their customers and constituents (i.e. the community). Features of the initiative have been well received by the public and have included publication of The Essence of Los Alamos and White Rock, the Jemez Adventure Map, facilitation of the Locals Care shopper loyalty program, visitor and new hire coupon books, and “Think Los Alamos and White Rock First” advertising at the Reel Deal and online. The Chamber is introducing a new feature to the CommunityMatters initiative that we hope will inspire local consumers to take action. The “3/50 Project” is a national, grass roots initiative that originated in Minnesota that invites participants to support their local economies “three stores at a time.” They are challenged to think about three local businesses that they think are essential and to commit to a at least $50 per month in expenditures at each of those establishments. Of course, many local consumers already do this in the natural course of their month and those people are invited to add three businesses to those they already frequent.
Can you help us to raise local consumer consciousness and spread the word about the 3/50 challenge? Will you post a 3/50 poster or tent card? … distribute 3/50 flyers to your customers or members? … post a 3/50 link on your website? We need your help for this initiative to have the desired effect. Katy's Corner What a great community this is to live and work in! I’m constantly inspired by the optimism and can-do attitude of our Chamber members. You are people who “Mind Your Businesses” every day, providing needed services to our town. You’ve taken risks and worked long hours and you’ve created something that enhances the quality of life here. Some of you have been doing it for decades, like Los Alamos Home Improvement, Metzger’s and KRSN, while others are just starting out, like Pearl’s Place and HomeHelpers. What you have in common is a constant desire for improvement. Growth and expansion seem to be on a lot of people’s minds this season. We have the new hall at Trinity on the Hill Church , a new building at the Bilingual Montessori School in White Rock, a new gymnastics club called “High Flyers” that is already overflowing its space at the Family YMCA with 150 students, a new menu at the Hill Diner, new managers at Metzger’s and at the Los Alamos Monitor, a

new season of world-class performances through the Los Alamos Concert Association (held in a refurbished Duane Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School), a new pet groomer at Yours Truly Dianas- the list of innovations could go on endlessly. The roster of Chamber members has held steady at around 300 members. Although I don’t have the numbers to compare us with other towns, my feeling is that we have done well to survive the current worldwide recession intact. Our banks have money to lend and we have not seen a significant raise in unemployment. The challenges we face here as businesspeople seem to be the same ones we have faced for years: lack of a good service workforce, lack of housing choice and aging infrastructure and buildings. Please feel free to call or e-mail me with any or all ideas about how to make this a better place to live and work. I’ll try to facilitate a dialog and hook you up with the people who can make your ideas come to fruition. It is a joy for me to work with such a great group of people! State Designates Arts & Culture District in Downtown Los Alamos
Los Alamos MainStreet led the effort early this year to apply to the State for recognition. Participating and endorsing organizations include Los Alamos County, Los Alamos Arts Council, Los Alamos Historical Society, the Art Center at Fuller Lodge, the Fuller Lodge/Historical Districts Advisory Board, and the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.
Local goals expressed in the application included improving the basis for cultural and heritage tourism here; bringing increased focus and tools for assisting downtown commerce and vitality efforts along Central Avenue between the historical district and Knecht Street; and enhancing common action and coordination between the arts & cultural organizations involved in the initiative. The unique cultural heritage of Los Alamos was celebrated by State officials at a ceremony in Santa Fe on August 28th. Cabinet secretaries Stuart Ashman of Cultural Affairs, Fred Mondragon of Economic Development, and Mike Cerletti of Tourism co-hosted the affair to designate districts in Los Alamos, Taos, Albuquerque, and Raton. These four communities join Silver City and Las Vegas as communities that have this State designation. New Mexico’s Arts and Cultural District Program was initiated in 2007 by legislation aiming Councilman Robert Gibson accepts the Arts and to enhance cultural Culture designation on behalf of Los Alamos and heritage tourism. Designated districts are eligible for potential State assistance including funding, technical assistance, recognition in promotional programs, and qualification for local options not otherwise available.

Several actions relating to the district are already in motion. The University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research is completing an inventory of cultural assets and relationships in the Los Alamos community. MainStreet has applied for a State grant program to obtain funding for engaging consultant resources for cultural planning. Planning for a visit in January by a cultural resource team from the State is underway. And a steering committee is being formed by Los Alamos MainStreet and an initial meeting was held during August. Members and businesses interested in participating in the steering committee may email Kevin Holsapple at kevin@losalamos.org to express interest.
MainStreet Now Accepting Small Project Grant Applications Want financial support to host an event or promotion? Look into a Small Project Grant from Los Alamos MainStreet. MainStreet awards grants up to $1,000 to advertise and marketing of event. The idea behind the grants is to promote our downtown and MainStreet district. The small projects committee rates the applications based on: • Is the event/promotion bringing people into the MainStreet district? • Is the event/promotion encouraging consumers to visit MainStreet businesses? • Is the MainStreet Grant money going to be used soley for promotion and advertising the event? • How many other businesses or organizations are involved?

Prepare for Halloweekend As darkness falls on Los Alamos on October 30th, Los Alamos downtown will be over taken with grizzly ghouls and creatures crawling in the search of candy. Trick or Treat on MainStreet saw an estimated 2000 people flock to downtown Los Alamos in 2008. One of the most frequent comments about the dynamics of Trick or Treat on MainStreet is “There is so many people in a frenzy to get candy. I feel like we did not get the visibility we were looking for.� Here are some tips on getting visibility in such an overwhelming setting. Make your location memorable. The best way to increase retention is with action. Give the attendees a reason to come back to visit you at a later date. This is prime marketing time for the Holiday season. There are a variety of ways that you can get them to come back and should be relative to your business/ organization. For example, a photography store can set up a backdrop and props for attendees to pose for pictures. The consumers can either come back to pick up the pictures or visit your website to download the picture. Department stores can set up popular items in key visible areas. Advertise your holiday sales and distribute coupons. Any entity can hold a drawing in which contact info is obtained. You now have created a way to contact these

possible customers. (Remember to give them a way to opt out of future information from your organization) With a little thought and creativity you can have a memorable location for Trick or Treat on MainStreet. If setting up a memorable location is just not possible, think about donating products or services to the MainStreet Costume Dance on October 31st at Fuller Lodge. MainStreet will be judging the costumes and your product or service will be displayed and talked about throughout the night as hundreds of consumers are dancing the night away. The main thing is that you just get involved with this community event and benefit from the magnitude of people you will be able to reach. Volunteers Making a Difference... LANS holds an annual honors ceremony for retired LANL employees who volunteer in the community. he Los Alamos visitor centers and Chamber has a loyal core group of 15 volunteers. LANL asks each volunteer to choose one of the nonprofit organizations that they volunteer with as a recipient of a LANS 10
a monetary award. It's based on the number of volunteer hours put in by the volunteers during the year. Ramon and Marvine Garcia work at the Los Alamos Visitor Center and send visitors your way every Wednesday and at many events. We thank them for choosing the Visitor Center as to receive the monetary
award from LANS. It will help towards volunteer training which includes how to refer and send visitors to our local businesses. Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation
The LAMVB, a program of the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation, operates the Visitor Center in Los Alamos and the White Rock Tourist & Information Center (WRTIC). The LAMVB also produces and distributes advertising and marketing materials such as the Los Alamos Visitor Guide. We also maintain the online visitor guide at visit.losalamos.com.

In 2009 LAMVB has assisted many organizations, school, companies and private parties that brought groups to town. We provided information, handouts, and links for their events, conferences, sports tournament, reunions, etc. Here are some of the groups served totaling more than 1000 visitors to Los Alamos this year. The new Los Alamos Visitor Guides are coming soon. The County of Los Alamos and the Lodgers Tax Advisory Board head up this project with a hired contractor, Griffin and Associates. Community members and staff of the LAMVB contributed to the update. Last year the visitor center mailed out 1,525 visitor guide's, gave to walk in and gave 2,212 to groups coming to town. The LAMVB contracts with Fun and Games to distribute the guides throughout the state. This order of guides should last for the next two years.
