Hello Chamber Members,
We have gone through some changes recently to our staff here at the Chamber. Sadly, Sierra Roundy has left us to start a new position with Premiere Marketing Group in Tacoma. Blaine Land has gone on to work with Cabela’s in Lacey. We wish them both well on their new adventures! They assure we’ll see them around town.
Think Chamber First • Phone Master went to The Creative Office for new apparel and a new banner! • Get Your 6 Fishing had Jerry Farmer from 94.5 ROXY emcee his event. • Forza went to Rouse Eye Care for new glasses. • State Farm went to Budd Bay for gear for the South
Sound BBQ Festival.
With that said, we welcomed Craig Shoulders as our new Executive Director in June. Craig comes from Aurora LASIK where he spent several years as the Clinic Director. He is an excellent fit and is extremely happy to come to work for the Chamber. We also welcomed Collin Silvernail as our new Events Coordinator. Collin has been an intern for our Chamber for over a year. We are all very excited for the future of the Chamber! The vibe in the office is very fun to be a part of.
• Explore Olympia & Beyond went to D Zines for new jackets. • Thurston Economic Development Council worked with TwinStar Credit Union.
Thank you to our committee for Kidwiler Scholarships. We were able to give out $12,500 in scholarships to High School students from the area. This amount was the largest amount we’ve given out to date. Thank you everyone who purchased raffle tickets at each forum. You helped us greatly and we appreciate you.
• Arsenal Promotions went to ThurstonTalk to promote their upcoming event.
The biggest event of the year for us took place on July 8th. Our staff worked their tails off to make the event a huge success. Our committee worked tirelessly for many months planning and plodding to have it be such a success. I am very proud of the committee and volunteers and want you to know that you did such an amazing job! We couldn’t do anything without our great volunteers and staff!

3 Tips for Using Social Media at Events By Mr. Event The creation of our socially connected world has made creating a buzz-worthy event easier than ever before. But getting meaningful results and boosting attendance can be challenging when you’re competing to gain attention online. So we’ve compiled our top 3 ways to engage your audience online:
1. CREATE AN ULTRA SIMPLE HASHTAG
Use ONLY ONE hashtag per event. In the world of social media so many #hashtags are thrown at us that it’s very important that you don’t confuse your guests by giving them more than one option. Include this hashtag in every piece of marketing material including the invitation, social media posts and even your event program. Even encourage your vendors to use the hashtag as well. The vendors you use at your event are looking to post quality content as well as you. If you encourage them to promote your hashtag and provide a relevant link or picture they most likely will promote you on their social accounts (who doesn’t love a free promo).
3. COLLECT INFO DURING YOUR EVENT Many companies choose to focus on pre-event promotion. But while it is important to get people to your event you don’t want to lose the opportunity to get live feedback during your event. By monitoring social mentions you can learn what is working and what isn’t. You’ll see quotes from the speaker (or the occasional grumbling that the speaker is taking too long) along of point-of-view photos which give your team an in-depth look at your event. This gives you the opportunity to engage and communicate with your guests while they are focused on your event. Another bonus piece of info: You can use the social mentions to ignite your post-event marketing strategies. Use quotes from speakers, or a picture that a guest posted. Don’t underestimate the value of what your clients took from the event. Instead amplify your marketing with these new post/ images you receive and use them in promoting your next event.
Plus don’t worry about overusing your hashtag, remember it’s temporary and after your event you can completely forget about it.
2. SHARE BEHIND THE SCENES CONTENT
Don’t ever underestimate the value of behind the scenes content. What you find to be mundane or a simple task during your event can re-engage your audience. Maybe it’s the stalker mentality that has overtaken our generation but we want to know everything we can about the event. Assign an employee to video behind the scenes content on Facebook live, take a picture of the final event program or take a picture of the decorators setting up your venue. No detail is too small in the world of event marketing. Lacey South Sound Chamber | Thrive! Summer 2017

join the State Patrol or Tribal Police and save his money to eventually own a hot rod and high performance automotive shop. Another $1,00 scholarship recipient was Katelyn Lutz, again from Timberline. Katelyn plans to attend UW and become a marketing manager for an international business. The final $1,000 scholarship went to Breanna Smith from River Ridge. Breanna plans to use her scholarship at Central Washington. She wants to get her degree in Actuarial Science and become an actuary. These scholarships are funded solely through donations, the monthly raffle at the Forum and earnings on investments. No Chamber funds are used for the scholarships. This is one of the activities that sets the Lacey South Sound Chamber apart from other chambers as we are not only giving back to the community but investing in our future.
Kidwiler Scholarship Fund Awards Record Amount in Scholarships At the June 7th forum, the Lacey/South Sound Chamber awarded eight scholarships and awards totaling $12,500 to North Thurston Public School seniors. The scholarships are awarded by the Ray Kidwiler Memorial Scholarship Fund which is administered by the chamber. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Ray Kidwiler, a founding member of the chamber and two-time past president, by his widow. The scholarships are awarded to North Thurston Public School graduating seniors that plan a career in some field of business. Since its establishment in the early 70’s, the fund has awarded over $115,000 to graduating seniors. As part of the application process, the students had to submit a grade transcript and a summary of school and community activities. In addition, they had to submit two essays. One essay was on the importance of the private enterprise system as part of our nation’s economic system and the other was on how their educational and career goals relate to the private enterprise system. They also had to sit for an interview with a panel comprised of the scholarship fund Board of Trustees. This year’s board was Stewart Ridgeway, Chairman; Graeme Sackrison, Chamber President-Elect, Vice Chair; Mike Harris, Columbia Bank; Cynthia Collins, Precisely Right Accounting; and Madelin White, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Wigs and Day Spa. The interview panel was also joined by Trustee Emeritus Gene Dolan. This year the fund awarded two $2,500 scholarships. One scholarship went to Mckenzie Ayers from North Thurston High School. She will attend UW-Tacoma and wants to study psychology and open her own practice with more personalized therapeutic treatment. Mckenzie also was this year’s recipient of the Gene Dolan Award for Academic Excellence and Community Service along with

a check for $500. It is named for Trustee Emeritus Gene Dolan who ran this program for some 40 years and has been involved with the program for over 50 years. It recognizes the applicant with the best mix of academic achievement and community service, since Gene placed a great emphasis on community service. Another $2,500 scholarship recipient is Sarah Park from River Ridge High School; which she will use at Dartmouth. Sarah finished #1 in her class with a 4.0 average. She is undecided on a major but wants to be in a business where she can make an impact on people’s lives. In addition, the committee awarded two $1,500 scholarships. The first one went to Mckenzie Wolfe-Webb of North Thurston High School. She will attend Western Oregon University and work toward a degree in American Sign Language Interpreting. She wants to own her own business as a freelance interpreter. The other $1,500 recipient was Adam Johnson from Timberline High School. Adam will attend UW and wants to become a marketing manager and CEO. Adam participated in Running Start and will receive his AA degree from SPSCC. Adam has also been class president his Jr. and Sr. years. The committee also awarded four $1,000 scholarships, the first recipient was Donovan Bauman, from Timberline High School. Donovan will attend SPSCC and take business classes to better manage his business which he has already started. He has trademarked his own line of clothing and is designing and selling them on line. He eventually wants to be the creative director of his own fashion company. He has been selected for an internship at Nordstrom’s this summer. The next $1,000 scholarship went to Benjamin Vasquez, also from Timberline. Benjamin plans on attending WSU-Vancouver. He plans to Lacey South Sound Chamber | Thrive! Summer 2017

29 ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Thank You! TH
The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for our 29th Annual Lacey Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic. We had lots of golfers come out who enjoyed a full day of golf, games, prizes, great food and, of course, a whole lot of fun. The day started bright and early with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. For the next few hours, teams stopped at each of our hole sponsors for games, prizes, and more fun. The event ended with an Italian buffet, raffle, and prizes. It was a very successful day for the Lacey South Sound Chamber! We could not have done it without the hard work and collaborative effort of the amazing planning committee, volunteers, sponsors, and of course, the staff at the Gold Club at Hawks Prairie. A special thank you to committee chair, Jerry Wilkins, who did a fantastic job helping coordinate this fun event.

Ross Irwin As an Ambassador for the Lacey South Sound Chamber for about nine years, I love
serving the chamber and the community in so many different ways. The chamber has been a major factor in growing our business. Being able to mix with the business community has been both fun and fruitful: Many of our customers are chamber members, or people chamber members referred. Thank you Lacey Chamber!! On the personal side, Trivonna and I were raised in Portland and have been married for 47 years. In January, 2001, we moved to Olympia from Klamath Falls, Oregon where I was a pastor. Trivonna had been offered a job with Curtis Cabinets in Olympia. In the fall of 2001, I began Teaching at NW Christian High School. In the spring of 2006 we began thinking about opening our own store. (I was thinking “Her own store.”) Little did I know how involved I would become. God has blessed us richly!! In our spare time, we…. WAIT, what is spare time? I vaguely remember the concept. Thanks Lacey Chamber and Trivonna for the privilege of serving as your ambassador!
Summer Reflection
Summer time! The best season ever -- sunshine and fun times. Even though it been years since I was in school, summer still means vacation to me. It’s time to play and adventure with friends, go camping and fuss in the yard some. The reality of adulthood, however, brings the recognition that I don’t really get a summer long vacation, where responsibilities have gone out the window. As adults, we have responsibility every day for meeting immediate needs and taking care of our families, while implementing plans to meet longterm needs. Putting our growth and development activities on hold until the end of summer does not work as adults. Although if you’re like me, there are still days where I wish time would truly stand still and let me bask in the sun, floating in the pool for days on end. So take that vacation, play like you haven’t a care in the world. There are times play should be the priority, but don’t forget to be intentional in your activities and to act with tomorrow in mind. Mind your long-term goals and act upon them year-round. Remember that Financial Planning and Management is not a seasonal activity, but a positive move in the right direction all year long.
