Benefits Children of Fallen Soldiers On Friday, July 3, runners and walkers can lace up their shoes for a 5K event in support of Always Brothers, a non-profit organization that is raising money to help support education funds for children who have lost a parent in either the Iraq or Afghanistan war. Fifty percent of every race entry will be donated to Always Brothers. Always Brothers started as a fraternal organization of marines and has grown to include members from every branch of the service, as well as civilians, friends, and family members. All have come together to raise awareness and funds for the families of fallen veterans or veterans that need assistance. Always Brothers is a completely volunteer organization. This 5K event allows you to join in and give back to those who have sacrificed so much. The race begins and ends at Thrive Fitness Center, located in the Lacey Crossroads shopping area at Yelm Highway and College Street. The scenic run is an out and back course on the Chehalis-Western Trail, and all ages are welcome. Register by June 5 to receive an exclusive race t-shirt! Following the race, participants can enjoy snacks and refreshments during the awards ceremony and raffle prize drawing. Play in Lacey 49 Years of Patriotic Tradition
Lacey Fireworks Spectacular If you grew up in Lacey, no doubt you have many memories of the July 3 fireworks show at South Sound Mall. Beginning in 1967, tailgate picnics in the mall parking lot, treats from cotton candy carts, and a spectacular nighttime pyrotechnic show was the Lacey tradition on the eve of Independence Day. Forty-nine years later and the traditional celebration continues with a few changes and the same family atmosphere. From its inception and continuing through 2011, the Lacey Fireworks Spectacular was a generous gift to the community from the Capital Development Corporation (CDC) and its founder Bob Blume. In recent years, however, the entire business community and the City of Lacey have stepped up to sustain this longestablished community event. Since 2012, the Lacey South Sound Chamber of Commerce has raised the necessary funds and partnered with the City in moving and expanding the festivities. With significant sponsorship from TwinStar Credit Union and Xerox Corporation, the Lacey Fireworks Spectacular and Freedom Concert are now held in the area of William Bush Park, at the corner of College Street and Yelm Highway. The Lacey South Sound Chamber and the City of Lacey invite you to attend with your family and friends and enjoy the festivities. As tradition dictates, the event occurs on July 3 as a kick-off to Independence Day commemorations in Lacey. This year, we are also happy to celebrate that the fireworks event is a proud part of Lacey Days! More information is available at www.ci.lacey.wa.us/fireworks.
