LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Summer always comes with many a comment about how inappropriate and revealing women’s clothing has become. Cries of: Cover up! Put on some clothes! She looks like she’s asking for it! begin to permeate our daily lives much more often than they do in the winter months (because let’s be honest, in Canada we spend half the year in eight layers of clothing, trying not to freeze). With summer these comments return, and with their return needs to come our dedication to changing our culture to not look at women wearing revealing clothing as an indication of indecency and an invitation for sexual assault. Our world still has very different perceptions of male and female bodies. In these coming months you’ll begin seeing guys working on cars, mowing lawns, or just out and about in the community with no shirt on. Most of us don’t even bat an eye anymore, it’s something that we accept as normal in our Canadian culture. Now imagine there was a woman doing the same thing. No shirt and no bra, just going about her summer day enjoying the sunshine and warmth without something to cover her upper body. Some people might even think that a woman could get arrested or fined for public indecency, but the truth is that due to the 1991 case of R v Jacob women are allowed to be in public spaces (parks, sidewalks, etc) topless.

We don’t see it happen though do we?

Just because something is technically legal doesn’t make it socially acceptable. There shouldn’t be a difference between a man walking topless down the street and a woman doing the exact same thing. Until our society embraces the changes put forward by movements like #MeToo, and the promotion of body positivity, and the desire among women to be able to wear what they want when our weather becomes warm and humid there are always going to be problems. One thing I saw posted on social media when this very issue came up still sticks with me years after I first read it: When you tell girls to avoid being assaulted by dressing more conservatively, or not getting drunk, or staying with a group of trusted people what you’re really telling her is, “Make sure he assaults the other girl” because there will always be someone around who has less clothing, or is less sober, or who doesn’t have her friends with her, and nothing about that is okay Something for everyone to think about the next time this topic might come up over the next few months of warm weather.

Sincerely yours,

Megan Murray - Managing Editor and Fashion Head

A change in weather calls for a change in your makeup routine. For a long lasting application that stays put through the heat, we suggest keeping it light throughout the summer months. With these simple tips we hope to help you achieve a natural summer glow! WHEN IT COMES TO SKIN CARE, CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Regular facials (at least once each season) are a big factor in achieving great skin, but it’s what you do at home that will show the best results! A few essential products to get you started would be a face cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizer suited for your skin type. If you’re not sure what your skin type is, don’t guess. We suggest seeing a local skin care expert for a skin assessment. Once you’ve got a basic routine down, you can then begin to add exfoliates, masks, and serums to the mix. It ‘s important to note that you may not see results right away, so be patient! MORE H20! The most natural way you can achieve glowing skin is as easy as drinking enough water! It’s suggested that the average person should drink 8 glasses of water every day. Drinking the right amount of water hydrates and brightens the skin, gets rid of dehydration lines, and helps slow down the entire aging process! Not only does drinking (the right amount of) water improve your skin’s complexion, it flushes toxins from our body, helps prevent headaches, aids in digestion, helps boost your immune system, and just makes you feel better all around! Our bodies are made up of about 70% water - we NEED it in order to function properly! If you have a hard time drinking enough water in a day, we suggest adding a squirt of lemon, cucumber, or even berries to freshen it up! KEEP IT LIGHT Cream and liquid makeup products are a must-have during the hot summer months! These lightweight formulas let your skin breathe in the heat and are more likely to stay in place all day. Just like powder, liquid highlight can vary from a natural finish to a dramatic sparkly glow. It works best when applied with your fingers by gently tapping it into the skin on the high points of the face. This product can be used alone or under foundation.

Cream blushes are easy to use and keep the skin looking fresh! We recommend warming this product up on the back of your hand, allowing for an easier application. Feel free to use a brush or your fingers to gently tap the product on the apples of your cheeks. Lock it in with an illuminating setting spray of your choice. This allows the cream products to set without a powder, leaving the skin looking radiant. To use a setting spray, close your eyes and spray your face an arms length away. This is a product that you can continue to apply throughout the day when needed. TAKE YOUR LOOK FROM DAY TO NIGHT IN THREE EASY STEPS: 1. A bold lip goes a long way! You can easily enhance your makeup look with minimal effort by adding a pop of colour to your lips. 2. Keep it clean and classic by adding gel or cake liner to the top lash line. Whether you do a thin line or a wing, adding a dark colour around the eye will make them stand out more. 3. Bronzer can be used to add contour while keeping the skin looking dewy. We recommend not going too much darker than your natural colouring to keep a natural glow. We hope you find these tips useful to get your started on your natural glow by Brittany Kreller

SAME TIME NEXT YEAR I SWORE I WOULD NEVER MOVE TO WATERLOO. Nothing about the city appealed to me. It had a distinct manure smell during the summer time, there was no club district, and don’t get me started on the building they referred to as the “mall” (any shopping centre that didn’t have a Sephora was a plaza at best). However two years into a relationship with a born and raised Waterlooian, my urge to change scenery resulted in spreading my wings and moving away from home, to the city I used to only tolerate. It wasn’t long before I grew to appreciate its attributes. I began to delight in the passion for local businesses and breweries. I would often praise the Universities and all the success stories that came out of this quaint town. In no time at all, I would start to feel more at home the closer I got to the Highway 8 exit off of the 401. My friends did not share my high regard for the city. Perhaps they were simply bitter that their best friend moved an hour away from them and taking it out on Waterloo through ridicule and criticism was the only way they knew how to cope. For that reason, I aimed to satisfy, even impress them at every opportunity I got. That’s why when Anna and I planned her visit, I knew exactly where I was going to take her. “It’s called, Bhimas Warung” I told her. “Sounds stupid” she replied. I made a reservation for two at 6:00 on the patio of Bhimas Warung; a restaurant excelling in South East Asian Influences. Their dishes were elaborate and unique, and the atmosphere was something out of a fairy tale. The friendly hostess led us to our table under a huge cocktail umbrella near a table occupied by an older couple. Our waitress was friendly and colorful just like the long skirt she was wearing. Everything about this restaurant, down to the uniforms was authentic. We ordered two watermelon mojitos and skimmed the bamboo menu. After we had placed our order, Anna scanned the surroundings to see if it was a smoking patio. She noticed a couple on the other side of the patio casually smoking, however felt apprehensive to light up since we were seated so close to another table. “Ask them if the smoke will bother them” she cowardly ordered me. I glanced over at the pair in front of our table. Very nicely dressed, couldn’t have been more than fifty yearsold. I grunted and fulfilled her request.

The woman rolled her eyes and perched her lips as she responded; “now why would two such beautiful girls ever even think about smoking?” “I don’t smoke I’m asking for her” I point at Anna, completely throwing her under the bus. “Do as you wish, it doesn’t bother us” the gentlemen chimed in, “you’re only hurting yourself.” Anna gave me a confused look. “Well now I feel awkward,” she whispered. “Well you made me ask like an asshole so you better smoke now” I whispered back. She sat, holding her cigarette as if posing for an oil painting. “Smoke you idiot! You’re making this so weird.” I smiled and shrugged at the couple. “I’ll just have one” she said in their direction. They mimicked my shrug and smiled, but continued to inform Anna how bad smoking is while I comically nodded along. First came the obvious health scares; Do you know what smoking does to your teeth and fingers? Not to mention your liver. And don’t be surprised when your tongue gets furry, too. Then the personal stories; You know, I was a smoker for fifteen years. Once I quit, I never looked back; only to question why I ever started in the first place. Followed by the Hail Mary Pass; Do you have children? Think about your daughter! Don’t you want to be there for her Graduation, her Wedding? All very valid and persuasive arguments that like every smoker, Anna has heard before. The conversation mellowed out after that. We formally introduced ourselves, and we got acquainted with our new friends Tom and Steph. We continued to engage in a pleasant banter about our lives, families etc. This progressed throughout our appetizers, during our dinners and as we awaited our Crème Brule dessert. Without realizing it, Anna reached into her purse for another cigarette and proceeded to light it. “Anna!” Our new friends raised their voice. “I’m sorry!” she said. “It’s hard to stop. I really want too.” “How about this,” Steph started to say, “one year from now, we will meet back here on this patio. And if you can honestly tell us you haven’t smoked beginning today; we will treat you ladies to your entire

dinner.” Our eyes lit up as we looked at each other. “Does that include me too, even though I don’t smoke!?” I asked. They laughed. I’m not sure why, I was asking a serious question. “Of course!” The woman said. “If Anna fails she ruins it for the both of you.” “Hear that? Don’t ruin this for me, Anna” I say slapping her across the arm. “Ok it’s a deal” she verbally binds the agreement. We checked our phones to confirm the date, and June 19th would fall on a Saturday in the upcoming year. Blaming his age, Tom had even made the effort to type in “Bhima’s Warung Date” in his phone as a reminder. Steph exhilarated by the idea went on to speculate how much could happen in a year, and who knows what stories we’ll have to tell. We could be engaged, pregnant; who knows? Her excitement was contagious and we went along with the ‘what ifs’. Finally, Anna and I had settled up our bill and were proceeding to head out, but not before exchanging hugs with our new friends, emphasizing how much we’re looking forward to seeing them again. “Oh, you girls are so young you will probably forget about an old couple like us” Steph said saddened, yet hopeful. “No, we promise” we said. Before we left, Anna and I secretly bought the couple a Crème Brule from us, and asked the waiter to attach a note that read; See you June 19th, 2015; we promise! We never waited to see their reaction, we decided to ask how the dessert was next year. One year later, on June 19th, I am sitting in my condo waiting for a reply to the text I sent Anna. Finally, the alert on my phone prompted me to pick it up and read “I’m so hung-over”. Are you kidding me? She had literally 365 days to get drunk and be hungover, but she chooses today, out of all days. “I’m coming, I’m coming” she responds. “DON’T BE LATE! WE DINE AT 6:00!”

At 5:54 I am standing on my balcony watching the traffic below me like a hawk. I am furious she is late, not to add absolutely starving which just got me more riled up. I believe they call this; Hangry. I lose focus as my mind gets entranced with thoughts of baked crabs, stuffed oysters, and fresh watermelon mojitos. My fantasy of licking the plate gets interrupted when I see Anna drive by in the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s car; thank God. She walks into my condo and I pull her hand around the rooms like a lifeless rag doll giving her a speed tour of my new home. There was no time to waste; it was already past 6:00 and I couldn’t help but envision our friends sitting there with two empty chairs in front of them. The waiter obnoxiously walking back and forth asking if they’re ready to order. “Just five more minutes, please” pleads Steph. The waiter exhales annoyance and glances at the door packed with foursomes that are awaiting that very table, salivating like blood thirsty zombies. OK, maybe I was exaggerating. My boyfriend Tyler offered to drive us over to the restaurant. “What if they’re not there” he considers. “Oh shut up, they will be there” I reassure him and myself. “What if they’re dead?” he continues. “Tyler!” Anna and I shriek simultaneously. “What? You said yourself they were older.” “They’re like, fifty! And they’re not dead” I say. “Unless they died from starvation waiting for us.” What is usually a five-minute drive seemed like an endless journey but we finally made it to Bhima’s. Anna and I exchange a nervous, but excited look as I pull open the wooden door prompting a bell to announce our arrival. We walked in and scoured the area. I have to admit, I had completely forgotten what these people looked like. I got a feeling Anna also failed to remember our new friends. This was made clear when she asked if an older black couple by the window was them.

After thorough examination, we pouted and the realization that Tom and Steph weren’t here sunk in. So, we walked towards the host stand which was also the bar and asked for a table for two. As they got our table ready, a tall waiter with a goti came up to the bar and began to place some drinks on his tray. “I don’t think they’re coming” he said to his fellow co-worker. “Who?” she responded. “Those girls. Barbara and Anna.” Our faces lit up and as if it was rehearsed we both yelled; “We’re Barbara and Anna!” The waiter was just as excited to hear that as we were to report it. He turned his direction to a table in the back, with Tom and Steph. We pranced towards them and embraced in emotional hugs. To witnessing guests in the restaurant we must’ve seemed like old friends or relatives. But to us it wasn’t only catching up with new friends, it was a simple promise kept. Steph kept repeating that she couldn’t believe we actually came. Tom went on about how cool this was. They thanked us for the dessert they enjoyed last year and told us that the napkin was displayed on their fridge for a whole year. Just like us, they had shared this story with their friends and family and had a cheering squad behind them. We allowed ourselves to send a quick message to those awaiting the verdict, and then our phones were put away for good. We took turns sharing stories from the past year. They were happy to know Anna really did quit smoking and weren’t shy to take the credit for her decision. We talked about work, relationships, and exchanged funny anecdotes. Despite the fact that it was only our second meeting, the conversation was flawless and natural, as if we really had been friends for years and years. Whenever one bottle of Pinot Noir evaporated into the conversation, Tom gestured for a new one.

Sip Suggestions: Patio Season in Waterloo Region After three delicious courses and about four bottles of wine, it was time to part again for another year. We made a standing reservation with the waiter for next year, and as promised; they treated us to the meal. Anna and I insisted that next year dinner would be on us; “We’ll see” they said. The summer issue of LADA came out May 1st. In one and half months- give or take, Anna and I will be joining Tom and Steph at Bhima’s Warung and celebrating our fifth year. I love telling this story, and people love to hear it. Two strangers that happened to decide to dine at the same restaurant as us that day, have now become our lifelong friends. Its completely inscrutable to think that if Anna had come a week earlier like we had originally planned, this life-changing event never would have happened. How bizarre is it that a couple we have physically seen only four times carry that much weight in our lives, and vis versa? It truly is a testament to how good people can actually be. With all the terrible things happening in this world, there is so much love and positivity that surrounds us that anyone can find if they simply look, or smile at someone, or hold a door open. I can’t wait to once again indulge in those stuffed crabs, baked oysters and watermelon mojitos; but most of all, I can’t wait to bring this copy of LADA magazine, and show Tom and Steph how truly loved they are.

Summer, also known as Patio Season, is finally upon us. Personally, it’s the time of year that I look forward to most. It’s a great way to get active in your local community and spend some time outside with friends and loved ones. Although there are several patios to choose from, below you’ll find my top five: 1. Bobby O’Brien’s, Kitchener Trying to choose between a day at the beach or a day on a patio? Say no more. Bobby O’Brien’s offers both of these amenities in once place. It’s in the heart of Downtown Kitchener, making it a great place to stop in for a drink and bite to eat while you’re exploring the rest of the area. It’s the only bar I know of that boasts a full beach volleyball court right on side. Bring your friends, make teams, and play for drinks. Sounds like fun to me! 2. Proof Kitchen & Lounge, Waterloo If you like to post interiors and exteriors on your Instagram, this is the patio for you. It’s not is it huge, but every seat is comfy. There are lots of longer couches and lounge areas, as well as chic tables to sit at. My partner and I went there last year for the Patio Party when I was running their blog, and we had the best time. That’s an event that you don’t want to miss this summer. There are samples available from many local breweries and distilleries, and the servers are available to bring you anything you want off of Proof’s incredible menu. 3. Beertown Public House, Waterloo In my time as a host, I spent days watching people as they waited to sit on Beertown’s patio, overlooking Waterloo Town Square. Sometimes, people would wait hours to sit on our patio. It probably seems like I should have a bias and rate it as number one, but I never cared for the small size of it. It’s not the smallest I’ve seen, but it does make for some confusion, especially if you have a special request like room for a stroller or a place in the shade. However, the extensive beer selection totally makes up for it. 4. Stark & Perri, Waterloo This is the perfect patio on a warm summer night. It’s not too large, but it feels open enough that even with a big group, there’s room to breathe. Stark boasts an excellent beer selection and a menu small enough to work with, even after a few. I would recommend their wings and pizza, their Monday night wing and pint deal is my favourite thing about the place. If you’re looking for good music with your good company, this is your spot. DO Try This At Home Patio-hopping can get expensive, and t’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for a refreshing summer beverage to have at home, try making a White Velvet. You can order it at quite a few restaurants, I first got hooked on them when I worked at Beertown. All you need is some Kronenbourg Blanc and the Original Somersby. Usually when I make them, I pour in the Somersby first, and then top it off with Kronenbourg. If you’re going to make multiple, the ratio is one six-pack of Kronenbourg to one eight-pack of Somersby regular cans (not tall cans). Cheers to a patio-filled Summer 2018.

MODEL’S DIARIES “Playing roulette with luck”

“Being

a model is not effortlessly easy”, I always reply, when people with excitedly shining eyes ask me about this alluring part of my life. They often seem to be somewhat disappointed with my answer. And, in contrast, I used to be astonished by their naive reactions. Not anymore. Throughout the time, I have begun to understand that the outside world has absolutely inadequate knowledge, and a surprisingly romantic vision, of the modelling world. This image of sparkling glamour, blinding elegance, juicy sexiness, breathtaking luxury, magnetic admiration and irresistible fame is a reflection of the beautiful work we, in the fashion industry, create, and so carefully and skillfully, like Egyptian archaeologists, preserve. It is time to explore this foggy reflection and dive into reality.

Once a month I will take you on a journey full of surprises. We can play “Alice in Fashion Wonderland”, although, there is a big restriction – expect the unexpected. Some of the stories in this “fairytale modelling world” can be joyful, funny, entertaining, inspiring and full of positivity, success and creativity. And others can be dark, actually very dark and smelling of fear, betrayal, envy, perversion, lust and danger. Welcome to OUR world…

Every model has a dream, sometimes it’s one ultimate dream which can be compared to Oscars or the Olympic Gold Medal. This dream can be anything from having a spread in Elle or being featured in Playboy to getting a leading role to a music video of a recognized artist. For some models the dream is a Pirelli Calendar feature and being a Victoria’s Secret Angel is usually the Holy Grail of runway Models, but the ultimate goal for any model is the cover of the “Fashion Bible” called – VOGUE. Of course there are models who have purely practical types of dreams such as being able to make their living, getting to meet a decent (or good looking, rich, famous etc.) boyfriend, some dream about moving from modelling to designing, others are perfectly content with trying different genres and making new connections. Speaking for myself, I have always had a combination of different and specifically established dreams – and one of them was to be published in PhotoVogue. PhotoVogue is a photography platform of Vogue Italia which is primarily focused on showcasing talented photographers from all over the world; it can lead to great opportunities to be chosen to participate in international exhibitions or being scouted by the most prestigious New York agency,

Art+Commerce. Personally, I find the PhotoVogue value in the fact that it is curated by Photo Editors of Vogue Italia - artists and professionals with the highest standards of aesthetics, perfectionism, uniqueness, originality and artistic harmony; these people breathe, eat, speak, think and create art. Of course there are voices out there who will try to reason why PhotoVogue is not so desirable but everybody is entitled to their own opinion and there is always that one “party spoiler” criticising everything, right? It was one Sunday morning when I got contacted by a photographer from Toronto whose portfolio seemed to be very different and focusing on natural themes, gentle femininity, basic forms, organic materials and light - only natural light and shadows. There was something I really liked about his style and he seemed very well spoken, reliable, focused and informed. He wanted to try to play with moss and we decided to add burlap and soil with water to our theme as well. On top of that, to my pleasant surprise, Cole, let’s call him by this alias, has had several images already published in PhotoVogue. I did not hesitate and we had set a date. I do have to admit that shooting in somebody’s apartment is my absolutely least favourite thing to do and if I can avoid it, I find a way to do so. Going into somebody’s apartment is the most dangerous thing to do because as models, we immediately lose all possible advantages. Their apartments have their rules; therefore it is extremely important to keep the highest level of safety measures such as knowing the photographer’s full real name, their exact address and the floor number. It is necessary to contact reliable references, have written down and saved clear communication of expectations and a detailed mutual agreement of the type of shoot you are doing. I also highly recommend clearly stated compensation and time frame as well as a functioning cell phone, personal water and snacks, emergency speed dial, a reliable companion accompanying you and regular cell phone checks by this person who is, possibly, nearby.

be risking our life or physical harm. Luckily, my shoot went very well and Cole was respectful, pleasant, professional, entertaining and interesting to talk to. He was also very fast with editing and already the morning after our shoot, I had a full set of beautifully executed and retouched images, plus a sweet little surprise – one of our images with the PhotoVogue logo in the corner. It was accepted and we made it! This photo shoot was a great success but it was also chillingly revealing for me - I have realized that no matter how careful and experienced I am, I can never fully protect myself. I know I made a few mistakes that day, mistakes which could have been fatal or extremely dangerous. I forgot my phone in my handbag on the sofa when I was changing in the bathroom. I have also realized that sometimes we women are just too polite, it is better to interrupt somebody and send a voice message to our guard outside than to be in a regrettable situation a few minutes later. Unfortunately, no matter how carefully we try to protect ourselves, if somebody really wanted to harm us, they could. Being a model is not extremely easy and we often play a dangerous roulette with luck. by Eva FK

People often ask why we put ourselves such danger and the answer is simple: studios are usually more or less expensive and outdoor shoots are not always possible or practical. Similar dangers are present every time we shoot in our place, in their studios or in any secluded area. The danger is real and every time we shoot in these conditions, we can

MAKEUP TIP FOR

GIRLS WITH GLASSES

I LOVE MAKEUP. I went to school for cosmetic artistry so naturally the passion is real. I also

wear glasses because my vision is ridiculous and I find that contacts are expensive and wasteful. Believe me when I say, I understand the struggle of figuring out eye makeup while wearing glasses. Or maybe you wear frames for fun, but still like to have your makeup pop under your fashion statement. Let’s dive in and learn how we can rock the hottest makeup trends while still being able to see. Know your lens. First off, it’s good to know whether you’re trying to achieve bigger eyes or smaller eyes, and how your prescription plays a part. If you’re near sighted, your lenses will make your eyes appear slightly smaller, whereas wearing far sighted lenses will have the opposite effect and cause your eyes to look slightly larger. Knowing your lens power and whether you want to make your eyes larger or smaller is the first step. Frames make your brows pop. It’s a fact. When you wear glasses, people’s eyes are naturally drawn to your eyebrows. So keep that in mind if you decide to skip plucking this week. It’s smart to keep your eyebrows groomed and/or filled in if you’re a brow girl. This also means that if you colour your brows too dark, it’ll be way too noticeable and not pleasant to look at. Stick to one shade lighter if you have dark hair and one shade darker if you have light hair. No black shadow in those brows, please. Bonus tip: choose glasses with frames that sit just below your brows. That way, you won’t look like you’re balding or some eyebrow-less alien. Glasses do not make your eyes invisible. I don’t know why this is, but I always feel extra exposed to the elements when I’m not wearing my glasses. When I put them on, I feel like they’re a mask over my face, hid-

40

LADAMAGAZINE.COM

ing imperfections. Wrong. They’re made with glass, not iron. You can see through them, surprisingly. That said, sometimes we want to overcompensate with our makeup because we think it’s less visible. Don’t fall into that way of thinking; no need to make the eyes extra dark, we can see everything just fine. The only type of eyewear that may make your eyes less visible would be glasses with very thick glass. If the glass is really thick, it’ll cause more glares when others look at you. A lot of imitation eyewear can be made with glass that’s too thick, so keep that in mind. Brighten your under-eyes. When you wear glasses, specifically the dark thick frames that are in style, it can often cast a shadow on your under-eye area, or make your existing dark circles stand out more. It’s ever so important to make sure you’re colour correcting and then concealing to minimize the tired eyes. Colour correcting is the way to go as opposed to piling on the concealer because it’ll fix the dark shadows without piling on the product. Less product means less appearance of those fine lines that are starting to appear (you know the ones I’m talking about). A peach colour corrector is great for those under-eye circles, and a concealer on top of the corrector that is 1 shade lighter than your foundation.

at least use a translucent setting powder across the nose/wherever your skin comes into contact with your glasses. This will keep your makeup in place all day, regardless of how much your glasses slide down your nose. It also doesn’t hurt to choose a foundation that is known for its stay power. Glasses are a fun fashion statement, and for some girls a necessity to their everyday life. Have fun with your makeup and never be afraid to try new tricks! It’s an art form, so create your own work of art. Don’t ever feel self-conscious because you have to wear glasses every day either – you’re gorgeous whether you’ve got frames on or not. Adjust the look to the style of the frame. If you are wearing a delicate, light frame, I would suggest choosing a lighter, less dramatic look for your makeup. Even a light eye with a bold lip would complement a delicate frame. If you are wearing a thicker, bolder frame, don’t be afraid to match your makeup so your eyes don’t get lost in the midst.

By Stephi V

Volumize those lashes. Choose a mascara that volumizes your lashes as opposed to a lengthening mascara. Extra length will only make it so your eye lashes are touching your eyewear, which is incredibly annoying. Also, curling your eyelashes will help keep them going UP and not FORWARD straight into the glass. SHOPPING TIP. Put on false lashes when you’re shopping for new frames if you are concerned about this issue. Pick a style that leaves enough room for all that lash. Enhance your eyes. This tip is extremely helpful if you’re one that is worried your eyes are rendered invisible behind specs. Use colours that are complimentary to your eye colour, and colours that make your eyes pop! Green eyed beauties, go for those purple and rose tones. Blue and brown eyes, you can never go wrong with golds and browns. Hazel girls can honestly play both sides of the coin and get away with it (lucky girls). Never underestimate the power of complimentary colours. Set your face. It’s vitally important to make sure you set your foundation before putting on your glasses, unless you’re into your foundation rubbing off onto your frames (which you’re most likely not). Or

Lady Boss

Meaghan Dietrich Hit The Ground Running

T

aking over a business so well-known and loved by its community for the last 25+ years would serve as no simple feat for anyone. With fabulous shoes to fill, Meaghan knew succeeding her predecessor and mentor Audrey Wilson would be both an exciting and challenging task. Diving in, Meaghan whole-heartedly faced this challenge with the same dedication and tenacity she has applied to all aspects of her life. Born and raised in Kitchener, Meaghan has seized every opportunity that has presented itself to her due to her myriad of skill sets. One of her most notable achievements was that of a dance career. At the age of 12, Meaghan joined the National Ballet School in Toronto, graduating with honours. As is common among many dancers, an injury caused Meaghan to reevaluate and change the direction of her professional ballet career. Facing adversity head-on, she moved on to work as a professional dancer in Los Angeles, on Cruise Ships and with various local dance studios as a teacher, because those that can; do, and then they teach.

That same dedication and passion that fueled Meaghan in dance has now transpired to her focus on the Agency and Academy of GEMINI Models. Meaghan purchased the business and took ownership in July of 2017. Seeing this opportunity as a privilege, she embraced it. Coming up on the first anniversary of owning one of the Region’s largest Modelling Agencies and training Academies, Meaghan has progressively carried GEMINI Models forward and is looking forward to continue evolving in order to better suit the community and continue to uphold the GEMINI legacy. Though many may view owning and operating a Modelling Agency as pure fun and fashion, it can often present situations that are far from glamourous. Overseeing 200+ models, 100+ students, countless clients, endless bookings and programs keeps this CEO on the go. Arguably her main challenge is striking that fine balance between work and life: “it never stops,” she shares. “I have a notebook by my bed, so I can write notes at 2:00 am, or whenever I think of an amazing new program or event” Meaghan jokes. “It’s hard to take a break from something you’re so passionate about.”

es to help build up our models and GEMINI girls so they can reach their fullest potential. At this point, things are a whirlwind of excitement, growth, and a lot of coffee and emails. If there’s anything I can say about our relationship thus far it’s that we are both queens that will always fix each other’s crowns and always have each other’s backs. She is a fearless leader I am happy to support and stand by. Beyond these noted contributors are many models, volunteers, parents, clients, businesses and community members who have remained loyal and committed to many of GEMINI’s initiatives over the years. Shifting gears, we start to stray from business talk and venture into a more leisurely conversation – because everyone needs to have a hobby or a way to relax, right? Though some may judge and quickly resort to stereotypical hobbies Meaghan may have as a Modelling Agency Owner, her choice of activity may just surprise you. Her eyes lit up when I asked what she does to unwind: “I don’t know what I love more? Cooking or going to the gym! As a former dancer, I crave movement so the gym feeds

Furthermore, a perhaps equally consuming trial, is knowing when to execute the many plans she has for the business. For Meaghan, it’s important that the direction she takes the business and the programs she builds will ultimately benefit the models, the Academy students, clients and the community. At this point in our conversation, Meaghan makes a point to share that running GEMINI isn’t a one-woman-show. The combined efforts of Meaghan as the Owner, President and CEO, along with her Agency Administrator, Model Booker and Academy Instructor Mikela Correia, and the Academy Teaching Assistants Sierra, Taylor and Emilie, all come together in a combined effort so GEMINI can flourish. When I had a moment to chat with Mikela and pick her brain about her boss, this is what she had to say:

In many ways we are quite similar, yet we recognize, celebrate and cherish all the ways in which we are different - a practice we exercise in our Academy classes with our GEMINI girls. Meaghan was the dancer; I was the jock. Yet we somehow both embraced and explored health, beauty and wellness during our respective experiences growing up – personal lessons we translate into our model development and class-

that hunger for me. Sunday nights are a highlight because I get to indulge in a homemade meal.” Meaghan spends her weekends doing exactly that, in the great company of her boyfriend Adam and her dog Jax, and perhaps a glass of red wine. The only thing left to top off what sounds like an incredible Sunday; some of her favourite music playing in the background of course! And who are we kidding; you know she’s dancing too! Despite all that running a multifaceted company embodies, there is always something that drives everyone who owns their own business, and for Meaghan the answer is very simple: “watching the development of people and helping them in that journey – that is my favourite thing.” For Meaghan her work at GEMINI with students, models and clients over the years is a main source of helping others achieve their goals, be it in the studio, on the runway, or at a show or event. Contributing to the improvement and development of others is without a doubt the most rewarding part of her work. A very important part of the business is the development of young girls. “I love owning a business that allows me to help young girls come out of their shells and overcome shyness. By the end of their time with us, you can see their confidence soaring and there’s no better feeling.” Working with our models and clients can serve a similar experience. From the moment that models join the Agency, Meaghan gets excited about how much potential there is to further their development. Whether it’s training them to walk in their first fashion show, providing them with creatives to build their portfolios, or fine tuning their skills in preparation for the International Markets from Mumbai to Milan, the opportunities are endless! At the conclusion of our conversation she states, “to me, there is no better reward than to see someone succeed in a field that they are truly passionate about.” Everything comes back to Meaghan’s passion for helping people reach their fullest potential. by - Mikela Correia & Megan Murray

SUMMER

RUNWAY TRENDS 2018

By Megan Murray

Summer! Oh how I love thee! You are a short season here in Canada but every moment of summer sun is something to be treasured. If you want to be on trend while treasuring the lovely summer weather our country can provide give a few of the runway trends here a try during these warm months.

BRIGHT YELLOW The colour of sunshine, canaries and daffodils, yellow just screams summer. Yellow can be a hard colour for some skin tones to pull off, but if you’re super pale like me and still want to embrace this trend try on a more golden yellow like this jumpsuit to ease your way into the bold hue.

SHEER LAYERS Everyone knows that layering is a great way to style an outfit, but the 30+ degree weather that comes along with Canadian summer days is not the best for layers of sol-id clothing. The fix for that is a layered look of a cute Zbralette and a sheer top! It adds dimension to your outfit without weighing you down with warm clothing in the summer heat. To tie the look together, try adding a sheer skirt to the outfit as well like my look here.looks.

GEOMETRIC CUTOUTS Extra air on your skin can help keep you cool in the hot months ahead and one very fashionable way to do that is with cutouts in your outfit. Try on a dress with either a cutout back or like this piece with two geometric openings on the ribs. For this specific dress the light lavender hue to the garment ads even a little more fun to the piece.V

BOLD PRINTS Well we’ve had some bright colours and some fun clothing styles but know lets talk print. Print can be scary, but for summer big, bold, bright prints are everywhere! If you want to ease your way into this trend try a large scale print on only one of your clothing pieces (in my outfit I went with pants as the patterned item) another way to keep the look more wearable is to have the print in similar colours such as all tones of pink, or blue, or green.Z

KITCHENER

TO

Always being a lover of fashion, I was thrilled to interview this girlboss who reassured me that I’m on the right track by not following fashion rules. Jordan Stolch, 32-year-old entrepreneur, moved from Kitchener to L.A. when she was 25 to pursue her dream of working in the fashion industry. When Stolch got off the plane in Los Angeles, she immediately fell in love with the city and knew it was the right fit to become a personal stylist. “This is absolutely where I belong. My career belongs here. My lifestyle belongs here. There is such a big piece of what this city represented for me that I didn’t have at home,” Stolch says. She prepared herself for this new beginning by volunteering, interning and building connections all while still in school, and says that you can gain so much knowledge working for free. It’s because of those relationships and her determination that she created MiKADO Personal Styling, and now works with a team of ten incredible stylists. She knows that eventually she will have more stylists join her team, but finding talented, hard-working people is always a challenge, since there is so much misconception around personal styling. “My whole business model is a really hands-on approach with the client. They really don’t have to do anything. We take on the rest like going out and finding all the clothing pieces,” says Stolch. The fashion industry isn’t as glamorous as many people think. Working seven days a week to keep her clients happy, running from store to store looking for that perfect fur coat, and putting together detailed lookbooks for each and every person are just some of the ways she stands out in this industry. Most clients are repeat customers, and many will recruit their partners and close friends because of their exceptional experience with Stolch and her team.

LA

“The service is definitely what sets us apart. This is an all-hands-on-deck approach. Whatever a client wants, they will receive. That’s what makes me and my business different than most stylists,” Stolch says with confidence. Since style is a form of self-expression, Stolch has never followed fashion rules because she finds it too restricting. Having standard pieces like a white tee or a great pair of blue jeans is encouraged, but that’s as close to a trend as she gets. She knows that confidence is what makes an outfit work so pushing a trend on a client is never her go-to move. Just because we see a new fashion trend on social media, doesn’t mean it looks good or necessarily even feels good, so Stolch suggests you just do what works for you. “Do what makes you happy. Do what you feel comfortable with. Don’t compromise comfort for the sake of style because comfort is such a key for confidence. Confidence is by far the most important thing you can do with your style. That’s something that I’m always trying to teach our clients,” Stolch says. She works tirelessly for her clients because she knows that when they put something on that they feel great in, it brings out their inner-confidence and it projects into every area of their life. The advice that she gives new stylists is the exact advice she follows everyday. “Do the work. It’s not easy and it takes so much time and effort. You have to be willing to put the work in. The people that succeed in this industry are the people that are committed to the long run.” Stolch is living proof that hard work, confidence and persistence will take you far in the fashion industry. As long as you feel your best, you’ll look your best too. by Haley Falco
