he greatest thing and the most difficult thing related to the evolution of Downtown Los Angeles might in fact be the same thing — there’s so much! Of everything! We were reminded of that as Los Angeles Downtown News embarked on the planning for the 31st annual Best Of Downtown issue. As we prepared the ballot for our annual Readers Poll, we realized there were more restaurants, stores, entertainment options and businesses than ever before. On a practical, everyday level that means more choice and opportunity for Downtown residents, workers and visitors, which is great, but it also meant more competition for those on the Best Of ballot. The results of that ballot are detailed in this issue, in more than 110 categories voted on by readers. Thousands of people cast ballots online over a three-week period, in categories from Best Steakhouse to Best Wine Bar to Best Nightclub to Best Bike Shop and beyond. In each category we detail the recipient that received the most votes, as well as two other entities recommended by readers. The issue also contains a few dozen Best Of selections from the editorial staff of Downtown News, with choices touching on the dining, entertainment, political and other scenes in the Central City. Thanks to everyone who voted, and enjoy the Best Of Downtown.

bacon, eggs and potatos, as well as giant orders of buckwheat pancakes. There’s often a line here, particuarly on weekend mornings. At 877 S. Figueroa St. or pantrycafe.com.

BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Philippe The Original

BEST NEW RESTAURANT Clayton’s Public House

You’re never digging deep into your wallet for a sandwich at Philippe’s, which is mind-blowing considering the fresh ingredients, soft rolls and the fact that your lunch is assembled in front of your eyes. Nor will you break the bank by adding a pickle, a cup of potato salad or a glass of refreshing lemonade. And coffee is still only 45 cents. At 1001 N. Alameda St. or philippes.com.

The Traction Avenue space is a game-and-beer fan’s fantasy. Arts District Brewing Co. makes roughly a dozen beers on site, with everything from lagers to hearty stouts on draft. Then add in darts, ping-pong and the 10 Skee-Ball machines (there’s even a skee-ball league). There are also rotating beers from other craft brewers, including Downtown options. BEST LGBTQ BAR Redline

The Sixth Street bar is many-splendored, with a solid bar menu, a Sunday brunch, Friday and Saturday happy hour from 9-10 p.m. with double pours (for those who know the password), and LGBTQ-oriented activities including a selection of drag shows and a weekly Thursday “New Queens” night. There’s also plenty of dancing. At 131 E. Sixth St. or redlinedtla.com.

READER RECOMMENDED

BEST LOUNGE BAR The Edison

Located inside a former electric plant, The Edison is an ode

to Los Angeles’ Art Deco past. Decked out in velvet curtains, with brass and metal that recall the building’s history, the club in the basement of the Higgins Building feels like a step into the past. The cocktail menu is solid, but the many varieties of whiskey remain the biggest draw (outside of the decor). Be sure to check out the regular burlesque and aerial performances. At 108 E. BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR La Cita

Located just south of Grand Central Market, La Cita is a neighborhood mainstay where the focus is on comfort and simplicity. There’s often live music inside, while the outdoor patio provides plenty of space to dance or enjoy a drink. The happy hours at La Cita are also worth checking out. BEST IRISH BAR Casey’s Irish Pub

Los Angeles is not exactly Dublin, and authenticity in any Irish pub outside of Ireland is dubious, but Casey’s does a darn good job. The dark wood-paneled space is heavy on Guinness and Smithwicks, and light on green-dyed beer. The food keeps Casey’s close to its roots, with corned beef, boxty and numerous potato-based dishes. It doesn’t hurt that the large underground spot has loads of games and televisions. At 613 S. Grand Ave. or 213hospitality.com/caseys.

ARTISAN HANDMADE FRESH ORGANIC PASTA

STAFF PICKS BEST NEW DOWNTOWN CHEF Mei Lin

Rising young chefs have been flocking to the Central City for years now. One of the newest and most successful is Lin, whose Nightshade opened in the Arts District in January. The 33-year-old Lin, who won season 12 of the Bravo network cooking competition show “Top Chef,” has earned raves for her Asian fusion-meets-California cuisine, with Eater, the Los Angeles Times and the James Beard Foundation among those offering praise (she was a finalist for the former’s Best New Restaurant). Nightshade’s prawn toast — topped with shrimp paste, deep fried to a golden brown and layered with crispy curry leaves — was named Food & Wine magazine’s Dish of the Year. Another offering, the Szechuan hot quail, served on a bed of Japanese milk bread, proves that Nashville hasn’t cornered the market on hot poultry dishes. Lin even managed to take a simple blooming

onion and reinvent it. At 923 E. Third St. or nightshadela.com. —Sean P. Thomas

BEST NEW ROOM The Wolves

After three years of painstaking work, Al Almeida and Daniel Salin opened The Wolves in September. Located inside the Alexandria Hotel annex on Spring Street, The Wolves delivers one of Downtown’s most dynamic cocktail interiors. Modeled with the style of the Belle Époque in mind, the space is filled with aged artifacts, antique mahogany and Batchedler tiles. The bar tops are made with glistening white marble and the ceilings are lined with stained glass panels. Look up for the indoor/outdoor balcony above the gold leaf trimmed wooden doors. At 519 S. Spring St. or thewolvesdtla.com. —Sean P. Thomas

BEST BIG FOOD VISION The Manufactory

Almost like a Russian nesting egg, the deeper you travel into The Manufactory, the more is revealed. The Los Angeles offshoot of San Francisco’s Tartine brand opened in January in the Row DTLA complex and is truly massive. The 40,000 square feet of space is the culinary playground for chefs Elisabeth Prueitt, Chad Robertson and Chris Bianco. It’s not a single experience, but rather a compendium of options including the main dining space Tartine Bianco, the private dinner spot Alameda Supper Club, as well as the patio bar the Alameda Cocktail Club. There is also an all-day cafe and pickup window, a subterranean coffee roasting lab and a bakery that pumps out nearly 4,300 loaves of bread and 6,000 pastries per day. At 757 S. Alameda St. or tartinebakery.com. —Sean P. Thomas

N

estled in the heart of historic Downtown, adjacent to the iconic Alexandria Hotel, sits The Wolves, a unique addition to the Los Angeles nightlife scene. Inspired by the early 1900s, the bar has been intricately decorated with period-authentic antiques from across America. The Wolves boasts the only balcony dining on Spring Street. To complement the impressive beverage list, Executive Chef Tyler Bonacotti has transformed The Wolves’ cuisine with an innovative menu comprised of classic dishes with a modern twist. BEST SPORTS TEAM OWNER

Steve Ballmer, Los Angeles Clippers

The irony of the modern local basketball scene is that as Jeannie Buss runs the Lakers with a level of ineptitude that recalls a certain former Clippers owner who shall not be named, current team owner Ballmer reminds hoops heads of the forward-thinking M.O. of the legendary Dr. Jerry Buss. Ballmer green-lit the deal that allowed the Clippers to acquire stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but his biggest move may have been building up the front office with Laurence Frank, Michael Winger and the icon Jerry West — the team that made those players acquisitions possible. Additionally, he has invested in bball technology and boosted the Clippers' business team. Ballmer is volcanic in his baseline seat at games, but he’s turned the former NBA laughingstock into a consistent winner with a bright feature. —Jon Regardie

BEST BILLION-DOLLAR BEGINNING The Grand

Nearly 15 years of work came to fruition in February with the groundbreaking of The Grand. Located on Grand Avenue and First Street across from Walt Disney Concert Hall, the $1 billion mixed-use development is an exercise in persistence, overcoming hurdles including a constricting recession, design changes and shifts in political leadership since architect Frank Gehry and Related Cos. won a bidding competition to build on the County/City-owned parcel in 2004. Construction crews are now building the project’s two towers, a 39-story edifice with 436 rental units (20% to be set aside as affordable housing) and a 20-story building that will have a 309-room Equinox Hotel. There will also be a large retail component. The Grand is expected to open in 2021. At thegrandla.com. —Sean P. Thomas

for a luncheon hosted by the Los Angeles Current Affairs Forum. Run by public affairs consultant Emma Schafer, the invitation-only events provide a rare opportunity to get the inside scoop from leading elected officials, minus the spin and platitudes so prevalent in politics. There are always prepared remarks from the speaker followed by a thoughtful Q&A. At a May luncheon County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas revealed, on the record, his interest in running for mayor in 2022, and at an event this month City Attorney Mike Feuer told the crowd he is also considering the race. Mayor Eric Garcetti has made multiple appearances at the Forum, and other featured guests have included state Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and Council President Herb Wesson. In a city dominated by “messaging,” this is where you go to find the truth. —Jon Regardie

BEST POLITICAL GUESSING GAME Huizar Watch 2019

It’s been eight months since FBI agents raided the home and offices of Downtown City Councilman José Huizar, but no political observer has forgotten that November morning — the sight of agents carrying boxes out of Huizar’s City Hall office, and a sniffer dog named Ginger bouncing around outside his Boyle Heights home, looked like scenes from a TV procedural. Some key facts hold — neither Huizar nor anyone else has been arrested or charged with a crime, and the Feds have been mum. Still, after Council President Herb Wesson stripped Huizar of his committee assignments, everyone is waiting to see what comes next. Speculation remains rampant and the biggest question is whether the 14th District rep and any other City Hall elected officials or employees will face charges. It’s a waiting game, but everyone is still watching. —Jon Regardie

BEST CAR ALTERNATIVE PROJECT Main & Spring Forward

Downtown Los Angeles is not abandoning the automobile anytime soon. That said, the Central City is increasingly becoming friendlier to pedestrians and bicyclists. Not all of the infrastructure projects have clicked — think of those “bike lanes” that barely separate cyclists from cars — but one that seems to receive the most praise is Main and Spring Forward. Pushed by 14th District City Councilman José Huizar, the $2.3 million initiative reworked the two key Historic Core streets, creating protected bike lanes, new and expanded signals at intersections and crosswalks, and better signaling for drivers to avoid collisions. The Spring Street work wrapped last October while the improvements on Main were completed in the spring. —Nicholas Slayton

The team behind Silverlake’s Hotel Covell undertook the project where each room has a unique theme and decoration. The building’s historic features have been preserved, but instead of fire trucks behind the large red doors, there’s a coffee shop, bar and a large, outdoor New American restaurant. BEST UNRESOLVED TRANSPORTATION TREND Dockless Scooters

The city’s one-year pilot program for dockless scooters went into effect last March, and since then thousands of the devices have flooded Downtown. Now residents and tourists zip around city streets (which is allowed) and sidewalks (not allowed). The scooters, provided by companies such as Lime and Bird, are an alternative to transportation options like buses, trains and cars, and provide a solution to the first-mile/last-mile conundrum

posed by traditional public transportation options. Still, Downtowners and others are divided, as scooter clutter is everywhere, and there are safety concerns from riders who ignore the rules or don’t wear helmets (not required by law, but smart to do). Meanwhile, city officials continue to debate and try to modify an appropriate set of guidelines for the new mode of transportation. —Sean P. Thomas

BEST RESTORATION

Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial

Last November, the waterfall at the Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial monument on Hill Street was turned on for the first time in 42 years. It was a landmark step in the refurbishment of the deteriorating monument, which finally reached its endpoint during a July 3 rededication ceremony that included the burial of a community-sourced time capsule. Located at the site of the first Independence Day flag raising in Los Angeles, the monument between the Civic Center and Chinatown features an 80-foot long, 47-foot tall water feature, a massive terra cotta bas-relief wall, and a 275-foot long brick wall. The monument originally opened in 1958 but fell into disrepair in the late 1970s when the water was turned off due to a drought. Now it has a glistening pool, more than 285,000 new tiles, a redone plaza and an environmentally friendly water system. —Sean P. Thomas

California Plaza (Grand Performances)

First things first: The Bunker Hill venue is closed this summer for a major renovation that will turn the Watercourt into a waterless attraction with more seating and green space. But Downtowners still adore the eclectic Grand Performances series for its music, dance, theater, poetry and other events. Cal Plaza is large enough to draw big acts but has nooks and crannies so visitors can escape the crowds and dance with friends. Best of all, admission is always free. At 350 S. BEST DOWNTOWN RESIDENCY

Yuval Sharon at the Los Angeles Philharmonic

Jaws dropped at the Mark Taper Forum in January when playwright Tracy Letts’ dark comedy Linda Vista opened. The stunned expressions came from a first-act scene in which 50-year-old self-proclaimed loser Wheeler brought Jules, a life coach, home with him. They kissed, then some clothes came off. Then all of their clothes came off and the pair got deeply physical. The lighting was low, but what followed was some of the gutsiest work seen on any local stage recently, as actors Ian Barford and Cora Vander Broek — and later a third actress, Chantal Thuy — gave themselves over to their characters’ passions and peccadilloes. It was a moment of mastery for the players and director Dexter Bullard — they made themselves vulnerable, and in the process, showed how strong, talented and believable they truly are. —Jon Regardie

In 2015, the Phil announced that young opera director and composer Yuval Sharon, who made his name as the inventive head of the small company The Industry, would serve as the orchestra’s “artist-collaborator” for a fixed term. That threeyear stint came to an end last month, but not before Sharon delivered his magnum opus, a presentation of Atlas, which was the first time Meredith Monk’s experimental opera had been staged in more than 25 years. It was widely lauded, and followed other Sharon successes, many of which involved using the entirety of Walt Disney Concert Hall, and not just the stage. For example, Sharon’s 2018 operatic re-imagining of Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds brought audiences into the concert hall proper, but also had people at old air raid sirens in Downtown. In a year that saw varied and fantastic artistic productions throughout Downtown, Sharon’s works may have been the most ambitious. —Nicholas Slayton

The Last Bookstore’s Book Clubs

The Historic Core literary landmark hosts a number of author readings and events, and built on that last year by launching a series of book clubs. The monthly sessions are unique and often unexpected, everything from a LGBTQ club to one focused on feminist literature to horror, dystopia and graphic novel groups. Members pay $25 for each session and enjoy snacks and wine, then dive into a discussion of the chosen tome; the talks are led by a moderator. The Last Bookstore has been expanding the lineup, recently adding a current eventsfocused club. At 453 S. Spring St. or lastbookstorela.com. —Nicholas Slayton

Yes, historic Union Station is where you go to catch a train, but these days you can catch so much more there. Metro, which owns Union Station, programs a steady, diverse and surprising lineup of activities at the transportation hub’s indoor and outdoor spaces. Cody Bellinger and Clayton Kershaw

The Dodgers are sitting high atop the National League West and are a favorite to finally capture a World Series. If that happens for the first time in more than three decades, it will be propelled by two key players. Bellinger flashed brilliance in 2017, winning the Rookie of the Year award before a sophomore slump in 2018. This year, however, the right fielder is a veritable monster at the plate. He’s leading the majors in most offensive categories, and with 34 homers, 77 RBIs and a .340 batting average at press time, he’s in the mix to capture an MVP award. He’s become one of the most feared hitters in baseball, helping to plate runs from the top of the Dodgers’ already formidable lineup. Meanwhile, in his 12th season, Kershaw has found a new level. Gone are his days of overpowering hitters, and instead he frustrates batters with crafty pitch selection married with pinpoint accuracy and veteran instinct. Hyun-Jin Ryu might have the best numbers on the pitching staff this year, but Kershaw’s 8-2 record and 3.00 ERA still make him a feared figure on the mound. If the Dodgers do finally capture that elusive trophy in October, it will likely be in large part because of Kershaw’s skills and leadership, and Bellinger’s power. —Sean P. Thomas

BEST LITERARY REVOLT The ALOUD Series

The local literary scene exploded last August when Louise Steinman and Maureen Moore,

who ran the Los Angeles Library Foundation’s beloved ALOUD speaker series, were abruptly and unceremoniously removed from their positions. Supporters’ calls for an explanation went unheeded, and a petition campaign demanding transparency received nearly 900 signatures, with endorsements from Pulitzer Prize winners and poets laureate. Subsequent ALOUD events were marred by protests and calls for LAFL President Ken Brecher to resign. Eventually Brecher offered his side of the story, saying a shift was undertaken to address a program that some felt were stagnating. ALOUD continues, with a new direction, fewer events and some changes in programming, while many fans eagerly wait to see what Steinman and Moore do next. —Sean P. Thomas

The thriller follows LAPD Detective Erin Bell (Kidman) as she hunts down a cult-like gang she once infiltrated, but along the way she spends a lot of time in the Central City, including having meetings at Fletcher Bowron Square, or leaving her office at the Central Division station on Skid Row (not often seen in a Hollywood production). Other scenes veer into Chinatown, or by the freeways in Downtown. A chase through the hills ends with a stunning view of the Downtown skyline and Dodger Stadium lit up. —Nicholas Slayton

THREE In that hard to pin down space between rock and greaser culture stood the band Sha Na Na. Melding rock ‘n’ roll with the dulcet tones of doo wop, the group expertly placed its own spin on the popular sounds of 1950s New York, going so far as to earn a television variety series from 1977-81. That followed the national notoriety gained after an appearance on stage at Woodstock. In celebration of the group’s 50th anniversary, the Grammy Museum will host Jocko, Screamin’ Scott Simon, Bowser and other past and present members of the gang on Monday, July 22, for a conversation and performance. Doors are at 7 p.m. and advance tickets are recommended. At 800 W. Olympic Blvd., (213) 765-6800 or grammymuseum.org.
