You want to join a company that’s going to be around forever. Berkshire Hathaway is built to be forever, it’s true of all our businesses that we own. You want to be part of an organization that’s not looking to sell out next week or next month or next year or where the place will crumble when the founders leave.
In terms of permanence, we can’t be beat. Not only can we not be topped by anyone, we can’t be matched by anyone.

CONTENTS SOCIETY FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO READ THIS PAGE REGULARLY, MY AFFINITY for dogs is no secret. And while my two ‘boys’ love to hold court at the MuycoTobin household, there’s no question as to their unwavering devotion. Rowan and Bauer always greet me at the door with unabashed glee, and they’re just as affectionate when ‘Mommy’ is sad, by either resting their head on my knee or just sitting silently by. This week’s Pet section features an interview with one of the country’s foremost geriatric experts, Dr. John Morley of Saint Louis University. Dr. Morley has researched the power of the human-animal bond by studying how the elderly interacted with dogs. However, his findings are not confined to older adults. Among them, the ability to touch and pet an animal can go a long way toward helping a person cope with an illness or any other negative life event. And in this instance, Dr. Morley notes that all an animal asks in return is knowing that it’s loved. As the doctor concludes, “They provide an easy happiness factor.” An easy way to be happy? Count me in!

Tell us about your favorite pet. Diane Anderson My absolute favorite pet is my doggie, Pooky, who is a Yorkie poo. She is 13 years old and still looks like a puppy! She has been there for me through some of the most difficult times in my life: divorce, children leaving home to start lives of their own, etc. She is always so happy to see me whenever I come through the door. She is truly my best friend!
Connie Mitchell My cat, Windsor, joined my household when she was a 6-week-old kitten. That was in 1995. Yes, as of May 1, she will be 20 years old. She’s got age-related health problems now, and we know her time with us is limited, so we’ll spoil her with as much TLC as possible in her remaining days. It won’t be the same around the house without her.

VARIETY THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY OF ST. LOUIS
Committed to Kids
BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN
G
RAMMY-WINNING SONGSTRESS TONI Braxton will serve as the headliner at Variety’s 49th annual Dinner with the Stars gala. This R&B artist will serenade attendees at the premier fundraiser for Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, which will be held on Saturday, April 25 at the Peabody Opera House. “Toni Braxton just won the R&B album of the year at the Grammys,” notes Variety CEO Jan Albus. “It’s wonderful that she wants to come; she has a child with autism, and she’s very much into support for children with autism, as we are.” This event is just one aspect of the annual Variety Week. Night of the Rising Stars will be held on April 17 at Ballpark Village. A ticket to this Young Variety event includes not only entry, appetizers and drinks, but admission to that evening’s Cardinals game, during which a Variety Kid will throw the first pitch, Albus says. Next is the Runway Lights Fashion Show, which will be held on April 18 at St. Louis Union Station. Albus says the event will feature a train theme, complete with a gentlemen-only Pullman Party in a Pullman car, while a stylish boutique is open for
the ladies. The New York-style show will include a runway presentation from ESCADA and a performance by the Variety Children’s Chorus; Variety’s Ameren Power Kids—children who received power wheelchairs from Ameren—also will take the stage. On April 21, Variety Week will continue with the FOX 2/KPLR Help a Variety Kid Call-A-Thon, followed by Imo’s for Kid’s Day on April 22. The week of events wraps up with the black-tie gala, Dinner with the Stars. “The proceeds are for children with physical and intellectual disabilities,” explains Albus. “The services we provide are for therapy, recreation, education, equipment, and the Sunshine Coach vans for transportation.” Marilyn Fox again will serve as chair of the Dinner with the Stars. The longtime Variety supporter has held the reins of the event for almost two decades; this will be her 19th time chairing the gala. At the event, Variety Man and Woman of the Year Danny Ludeman and Alison Ferring will be honored. “The event itself is underwritten, which means we aren’t using any money at all to put [Dinner with the Stars] on,” Albus says. “It is three entities—World
Dinner with the Stars chair Marilyn Fox with a Variety Kid
Wide Technology, Centene Charitable Foundation, and the Steward Family Foundation—because they want all the proceeds to go to the Variety Kids.” Tables of 10 range from $6,000 to $50,000 for Dinner with the Stars, with individual tickets available at two of the four support levels. Individual tickets to Braxton’s performance are available for $65. The organization hopes to raise $2.3 million from the event. In addition to the Dinner with the Stars, Albus says there’s something for everyone in Variety Week. “You can buy a pizza, call-in, attend a fashion show—there are all these things people can do depending on their means, and how they would like to support Variety.”

2014 St. Louis Teen Talent Competition
because the performing arts are very collaborative.” The appreciation aspect is key. “It grows the audiences of tomorrow so the arts can continue to thrive.” And then there is FPACF’s signature event, the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition. Now in its fifth year, this showcase of skill runs the gamut of performing arts, ranging from pianists to rappers, ukulele players to tap dancers. Contestants work through three rounds: the preliminaries, which were recently held; the semi-finals, which will be held later this month; and the final competition, an open-to-the-public event at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in April. While the participants are young adults, the experience is far from juvenile. “I love it when people are coming to the show for the first time, and what they say to me is, I had no idea this would be so big and wonderful—it’s so hard to believe these are teenagers!” Ballard says. Entertainment at the main event will include not only the final contestants, but the Fox Tellerettes dance troupe and a performance by the previous year’s winner, as well as local actor and lone-adult in the event of exceptional teens, Ben Nordstrom, who will serve as emcee. “We really put on a big show, in addition to the acts that are performing.”
ON THE BOARD: MARY STRAUSS There is no talking about the Fox without mentioning the work of Mary Strauss, maven of The Fabulous Fox and local philanthropist. The FPACF is no different. Strauss serves as the president of the FPACF board of directors. “We give grants for programs that focus on youth initiatives in the performing arts, and we give away about $150,000 a year,” she explains. “We also pride ourselves in doing what we uniquely are qualified to do…so we include master classes with Broadway actors.”

WHAT/WHEN/WHERE: FIFTH ANNUAL ST. LOUIS TEEN TALENT COMPETITION FINALS, FRIDAY, APRIL 24, THE FABULOUS FOX THEATRE Tickets are free, but must be ordered through Metrotix or at the Fox Box Office. HOW TO GET INVOLVED: For more information, call 367-1573 or visit foxpacf.org.
Strauss calls the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition a booming success, noting that this year’s contestants are made up of 215 students from 73 schools or home-schools. “The competition, the auditions, the anticipation, the hard work and the thrill of being on the Fox stage—it’s very similar to being in a Broadway Show, and the kids get to experience the whole thing,” Strauss says. “It doesn’t cost the kids any money, it doesn’t cost the audience any money—we just want to give the kids a chance to shine on stage and strut their stuff.”

MISSION: Connecting youths with the arts— that’s what the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation (FPACF) is all about. “The direct mission really is to help young people in St. Louis grow as performing artists or deepen their appreciation of the performing arts so they have a lifelong connection to the arts, whether it be a profession, an avocation, as an audience member, or as a donor,” says executive director Kathryn Ballard. “The performing arts need all of that.” HISTORY: In 1981, the Fox Associates LLC partnership purchased the Fabulous Fox Theatre. In 2002, the owners launched a nonprofit aspect of the organization and created FPACF. COMMUNITY IMPACT: Ballard explains that FPACF provides grants to related organizations and produces its own programming. There are master classes with professional actors, dancers or singers who are performing at the Fox, as well as a Kids Night on Broadway event, which allows adults to bring children to see a show for free. Activities are offered beforehand inspired by the performance, such as make-and-take smiles on a stick before a performance of Annie, in honor of the show’s tune, You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile. “The arts are important to our community, and I think it’s important that young people be exposed to and encouraged to participate in the arts at a young age,” Ballard says. “It has been proven that exposure to the arts at a young age [not only] helps young people develop as more well-rounded human beings, but it also teaches discipline and team work

HE A LT H BALLOON SINUPLASTY
A Game-Changer?
S
BY CONNIE MITCHELL
OME PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM chronic sinus infections that don’t resolve with the use of medication or nasal sprays used to face in-patient surgery to open their sinus passages, which involved accessing the sinuses through incisions in the face or mouth. Over time, the procedure was refined using endoscopic technology in which a thin, flexible tube is passed through the nose into the sinus cavities. However, the procedure still required general anesthesia and a short hospitalization. As sinus surgery has progressed even further, some patients now undergo outpatient procedures using thin catheters tipped with balloons that inflate to enlarge narrowed passages and allow better drainage. Known as ‘balloon sinuplasty’ or ‘balloon sinus dilation,’ patients are in and out of the doctor’s office in about an hour, and no longer need general anesthesia to tolerate the procedure.
“The difference (from traditional sinus surgery) is that it is a more minimally invasive approach,” says Dr. Frederic Pugliano, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) with Sound Health Services, P.C. Endoscopic sinus surgery has been around for about 20 years and was considered minimally invasive despite the need for anesthesia, he says. “We introduced balloon procedures about seven years ago, and initially those were performed in the operating room, as well. Most of us didn’t feel that was really a significant change over what we were already doing,” he says, noting that it added cost without significantly improved outcomes. “But when we discovered that we were able to do (balloon sinuplasty) with the patients awake in the office, that was a game-changer.” Patients are given oral sedation, and a topical anesthetic is used to numb the nasal and sinus passages. A few hours of rest are needed to allow the sedatives to wear off, but normal activities
typically are resumed the next day. While this is an advance, it is not appropriate for all patients, warns Dr. John Schneider, an otolaryngologist with Washington University Physicians. “Typically, patients who have mild sinus inflammation that is caused by swelling around the ostia (the natural drainage hole of the sinus cavity) may benefit from having the ostia dilated,” he says. “Patients with moderate to severe inflammation of the sinuses are typically not candidates for balloon sinuplasty. In those patients, the inflammation in the sinuses is greater, and requires opening the Continued on page 74

Chesterfield Physician Delivers A Recipe For Weight Loss
Dr. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).
NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electro-impedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.
Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.
Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat

burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.
Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

DIELMANN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY
Strength in Numbers BY BRITTANY NAY
D
IELMANN SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL Realty is coming off its best year ever, and as it celebrates its 10th anniversary as a Sotheby’s affiliate, 2015 promises to be even better, according to owner Andy Dielmann. Since 2005, the St. Louis affiliate of Sotheby’s has experienced phenomenal growth, Dielmann says. From 2012 to 2014, it reported a 102-percent sales volume increase, with units sold up 136 percent. And last year, it saw another 36-percent uptick in sales volume, with units sold up 40 percent. The Sotheby’s name makes all the difference, Dielmann notes. “With the branding of Sotheby’s, there is a high level of service that one expects and one gets.” And as the business specializes in residential real estate throughout the city’s central corridor, from the downtown loft district all the way to homes in Wildwood, its reach is widened exponentially through its affiliation with Sotheby’s. “The strength of Sotheby’s website is unbelievable for the high-end luxury market. Our marketing partners are able to promote listings on
more websites, and we have marketing and technological tools that no one else offers,” Dielmann explains. Those tools will be further enhanced as cutting-edge local and national websites roll out this spring. Joe Farmer, director of branding and communications, says the new sites will allow potential homebuyers to feel more immersed in the properties they are searching through a greater emphasis on video than photography. “The main site will have a new blog featuring videos of many of the properties to better accentuate how the home flows,” he explains. The local site also will gradually add sections featuring the unique story of each of the city’s neighborhoods. And the Sotheby’s parent site primarily will move to video rather than photography. “That way, you really feel like you are [in the home],” Farmer says. In addition to new technology, the local office continues to hire agents. “We have added experienced agents, as well as recruited some younger agents who are really setting the world on fire,” Dielmann says, adding the office now has about

100 agents. By all indications, 2015 will be another strong year for local real estate, Dielmann says. “Interest rates remain low, and the economy is doing well.” With a high number of buyers and a low inventory of houses, he urges homebuyers to act quickly. “Good properties will go fast. Get pre-approved, and be sure to work with a knowledgeable agent who can really help find your dream home.”

F YOU DECIDED TO SELL YOUR HOME THIS SPRING, WHAT would it take to get it ready for the market? One brave Frontenac homeowner put her home to the test, and LN toured it with three local real-estate agents, who told us their biggest dos and don’ts to prepare for potential buyers. The current owners bought this 3,000-plus-square-foot home five years ago, and immediately set about repainting every inch. They also just finished a remodel of the kitchen, and turned an extra bedroom into a large main-floor laundry room/mud room/ mom’s office. Next on their list is new wood flooring for some of the common areas. Here’s what the agents had to suggest, should they decide to put it up for sale:

market-ready real estate A Ladue News Special Section Continued from page 31 • Before a showing, clean all of the windows, and make sure all of your blinds are open, with the lights on. • T he owners really maximized their space in the laundry room. I always suggest that when you move into a new home, live with it for a year before you decide how to remodel. You never know how you’ll want to use a space until you’ve lived in it. • The master bedroom is almost too spacious— I would bring a stager in to add some substantial furniture and maybe a plant to fill out the space. Also, remove any traces of pets, such as dog beds. • In the master bath, make sure any glass is perfectly clean. My trick is to clean it thoroughly, then apply Rain-X, like you would for a car windshield. For tile in tubs, you can apply car wax to keep scum from building up (but be careful about where it’s used, because it can make the surface slippery). • For the basement, remember that buyers don’t just look with their eyes; they smell the home, too. If there’s a musky smell, it might not mean there are any problems, but you still want to correct it with air freshener.
If the furniture doesn’t maximize the space, consider hiring a staging company.

of my favorite ways to update house numbers with a contemporary look is to spell one number in the address, such as ‘3 8 zero 5’. Mulch and add pansies and cool-season annuals this time of year: Put regular annuals in later on. Get stuff pruned back and cleaned up. Add some pots and container plants on either side of the door to add some color and texture. – Jaime Gannon, Chesterfield Valley Nursery Replacing house numbers can be an impactful way to add appeal to the front of your house. One
One of my pet peeves is when shades, drapes, blinds or shutters are haphazardly hanging at funky angles or different lengths, or aren’t closed right—or, if one of them is lined and the other isn’t, or if the drapes are tattered…It may look fine from inside, but if the lining is dry-rotted and falling apart, that’s what you see from the street. – Teddy Karl, The Great Cover-Up Neatness counts. Trim the shrubs, keep the lawn mowed, edge the lawn around the sidewalk and the driveway, and add a clean layer of mulch. It really makes the beds look neater and a little more cohesive, even if you don’t have a lot of gorgeous annuals. And if you have a location on your house where you can put a window box, do—it will be seen more easily as you’re driving down the street. – Steffie Littlefield, Garden Heights Nursery Call the tree trimmer and trim any kind of tree or bush in the front of the house that needs it. Then, a new layer of mulch is a defining line of new
maintenance. Wipe down the whole front door area to get the winter cobwebs. Make sure the gutters are cleaned out, power-wash the home, blow any the storm debris off of the lawn and driveway. You never get that second chance to make a first impression. – Tim Rohan, T. Rohan Interiors

FASHION-FORWARD MENSWEAR LANDS IN ST. LOUIS FASHION HAS A WAY OF REPEATING ITSELF, SO A NEW COLLECTION with historical roots makes perfect sense. The latest? Contemporary aviation-wear, and it is now available at the Chesterfield Mall. Men’s store Lindbergh is named for—you guessed it—Lucky Lindy himself, Charles Lindbergh; and its St. Louis-area location is only its second in the U.S. “We can’t be true to our brand without being in St. Louis,” says Lindbergh COO and creative director Terrence Revah. “Most people don’t realize his genius in how he dressed.” Outside of the U.S., locations of the store can be found in Australia and Canada. Lindbergh is divided into three categories: the Blue, Black and White labels. The Blue Label consists of Americana-type attire, such as denim, while the Black Label features a formal-preppy flair. The White label is a ‘hybrid’ between the two, featuring tapered pieces. Items range from $10 to $1,000, Revah says. In case the clearly labeled styles aren’t helpful enough, the store is focused on creating outfits using its displays. “We really make it simple for men,” Revah says. “A guy needs to see it visually—if they can see it, they can put it together.” lindbergh.dk

A HIGH NOTE IN FASHION WINTER OPERA ST. LOUIS SOON WILL PREMIERE ITS rendition of Otello, and Ladue News took a behind-thescenes peek at the costume design. Costumes are a combination of rented, purchased and made in-house, says Jennifer ‘JC’ Krajicek, season costume designer. “Usually, the director comes with a vision of the setting and time period, if we’re not just sticking to the script,” Krajicek explains. “We talk about his vision and the budget, and what’s realistic to provide.” Start to finish, her work takes about six weeks per show. Audience members should keep an eye out for Otello’s dramatic robe, which Krajicek calls show-stopping, in addition to the leather armor she created and a variety of hats from the Robert Schmidt Costumes collection. Performances will be held March 6 and 8. winteroperastl.org Continued on page 52

NEVER ENOUGH RETURNS NEVER ENOUGH HAS RECENTLY REOPENED FOR THE SEASON, bringing in an array of new items for the spring and summer months. Co-owner Ann Meyer explains that the showroom has “lots of neons, pinks and corals,” this season, along with floral prints and graphic blackand-white combinations. “We really focus on color and price to make sure people are getting that punch of color at a great price.” Never Enough has expanded its jewelry collection this season, Meyer says, noting the current popularity of tassels and delicate, layering pieces. Other new additions include hippie-chick line BuddyLove, the resortinspired Macbeth Collection and a curated selection of shoes. Meyer owns Never Enough with her sister, Chris Conley. Never Enough recently won Ladue News’ #LNLocalLove contest, during which it received an outpouring of support from customers, all gushing about their loyalty to the company. NEW LINGERIE LINE SASSY CHASSIS RECENTLY LAUNCHED AT A BAR le Freres cocktail party. Created by St. Louisan Susan Piontek, the premier item is a multitasking undergarment. “I created Sassy Chassis because I wanted to make a garment that was not a panty nor a slip, but a beautiful marriage of both,” Piontek says of the lace-trimmed bottom. “It is flirty, functional and fiercely feminine, and fills a niche that wasn’t being addressed.” Two styles of the item are available: the bloomer and the slightly longer boomer, both available in an array of sweet-themed colors, like Marshmallow and Licorice. “I was infused with inspiration when I lived in France, and was exposed to beautiful lingerie and superb workmanship; and, although that was many years ago, the idea of doing this was always present,” Piontek explains. She began searching for assistance and answers through conferences, networking, groups and more. “My design turned into a pattern, next into a prototype and finally into a size set—all sizes being represented.” Items are available in sizes XS through XXL. Piontek, who also works as a Certified Life Coach and language educator, says she sees many things on the horizon for Sassy Chassis, but is currently pacing herself. “A cami-like top is being perfected and will be available in the spring,” she says, adding it will launch as part of the bridal line, which also features monogrammed bottoms. Other future possibilities include additional items (pre-ordering is available for T-shirts, bandeaus and headbands), a little girl’s line and more. Sassy Chassis will hold a trunk show at Blown Away Blow Dry Bar on May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. sassychassisusa.com

YOUR DESIGNER BAG MIGHT BE THE FINEST of leathers, but is it gold? Luxury 24-karat gold purses will be auctioned off soon for local nonprofit Operation Food Search at the Purses for Pantries Luncheon and Auction. Sunny Schaefer, Operation Food Search executive director, describes the biennial event as a great combination of handbags and philanthropy. “We are going to have about 400 purses, and we have a great assortment of designer bags by Cole Haan, Burberry, Tory Burch, Coach, Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade and Jessica Simpson.” The gold purses come from brand Mi Piaci; products from its handbag, bracelet and cuff collections will be available at the auction, with the total assortment valued at more than $50,000. And yes, the gold is real—it’s infused using Precious Surface technology, which deposits the precious metal on the material. “Our mission is to nourish and educate our neighbors in need to heal the hurt of hunger,” Schaefer says. “The revenue generated from the event will allow us to collect and distribute food to our partner pantry agencies. We also have a robust nutrition education program, and a child-focused hunger relief program called Operation Backpack.” operationfoodsearch.org

Q&A with Sarah McFarland of Soft Surroundings
BEAUTIFUL SCENTS ARE MORE THAN JUST A LUXURY—THEY’RE also tied to our self-confidence and memory. A familiar fragrance can transport us back in time to remember loved ones, our favorite places, or even a fleeting romance. We talked with Sarah McFarland, beauty director at Soft Surroundings, about the phenomenon, and how it plays into their signature fragrances. I understand all of your fragrances are inspired by personal stories? Yes, our founder Robin Sheldon has had a rich and full life, and many of the fragrances are inspired by it. Our newest scent, L, was inspired by Robin’s friend, Leigh. She was in London during World War II; and she was in an air raid shelter where she met this man, and they spent the night talking about their lives. He fell asleep, and before she left, she left a note in his lapel that said Toujours, L. The scent itself has a warm tobacco note, black honey to sweeten it, a woodsy Guiac with citrus, black vanilla and amber. The back-story to our 1908 scent is about Robin’s grandparents. That was the year of their third wedding anniversary, and her grandfather had three greenhouses installed in their home. The scent is floral but modern and it has notes of white jasmine French Narcissus, with magnolia blossoms and peonies. ShellSeeker is an eau de toilette, with notes of jasmine, water lily, red mandarin and citrus. It recalls summers that Robin spent on the beach with her family as a child. She used her mother’s signature scent to inspire this, and it launched on Mother’s Day. What goes into developing the scents? Each fragrance takes about a year to develop. When we want to work on a new scent, we’ll all meet together, and we can take inspiration from a lot of places. The process is organic, and we let it come out naturally. Once we have the inspiration, we’ll talk with fragrance houses about what we’re trying to achieve, and try samples until we find the right balance. You can’t rush this, and we work until we feel good about it. Doesn’t each individual’s skin affect their fragrance differently? Yes, scents react to the chemistry of the body. To achieve the purest form of a scent, you should spray it back behind you and walk into it. But when you put a scent on your skin, it becomes your signature scent. A good place to put your scent is on pressure points—the wrist, inside the elbow, or behind the ears, so that people will smell it when they hug you. Having a signature scent really defines your brand and who you are. Scents are tied to memory and how you feel when you think about a person. Scents can add to your confidence. And it seems sad, but it ties you to somebody—when someone passes away, people always save their fragrances because it gives them a real connection to that person. How do you create a signature scent? If you want something truly unique, you can achieve it by layering scents. If you don’t have a lot of experience doing this, you would want to start out using less-complex scents. But it’s all about building: Start with vanilla, and then add something else that has that same note. Or you can start out the day by using a pure fragrance oil, and build on it as the day goes on with an eau de parfum or a lotion.

It’s Time for A Spring Soirée!
BY BRITTANY NAY
Maureen FitzGibbon Kate & Company • HOT HUES. Pantone’s official colors for the season are a must-have for any spring soirée: Scuba blue, aquamarine and Lucite green, toasted almond and lavender herb, and pops of tangerine complement any spring-inspired party. • CHIC STYLE. Incorporate acrylic elements, mirrored tabletops, preppy flowers and modern patterns into plates and napkins for a freshly futuristic tablescape. • FAMILY FEAST. Once the bitter winter cold thaws into warmer spring temperatures, set up outdoor feasting-style tables for a family-friendly gathering. • SLEEK SLATE. A minimalistic look for the tabletop will draw attention to lavish food displays, fresh blooms, lush succulents and colorful patterns.
Josie Littlepage Cosmopolitan Events • ENERGY INFUSION. Boost the party’s energy with lots of color by inviting guests to wear their best spring outfits, such as Lilly Pulitzer dresses, and using brightly patterned table linens, napkins and placemats, as well as textured glasses. • CREATIVE CONTAINERS. Repurpose unique containers, such as teapots and umbrella holders, for centerpieces featuring fresh fruit or flowers. • SPRING SCENT. Add fragrant flowers, such as lilies and gardenias, around the house to refresh guests’ mindset and welcome springtime. • SOOTHING SONGS. FLORAL CENTERPIECES
The Center of Attention BY BRITTANY NAY
As St. Louis anxiously awaits the dawn of another spring, local florists share their favorite centerpieces that are sure to liven up any soiree at your home this coming season.
JANE WINTER Wildflowers Unusual foliage and the color, wine—both on-trend for spring—are key elements in this arrangement. Helleborus, which provides the wine hue; sweet peas, which have a lovely scent; and a variety of foliage with interesting textures are combined in a cement pot for a soft, romantic and earthy design perfect for spring. With so many seasonal blooms, from tulips and hyacinth to têteà-têtes and blooming branches, there are always interesting florals for beautiful centerpieces to wow guests sitting around your spring party table.
PHOTOS BY SARAH CONARD
BARB WEHKING Bloomin’ Buckets Like a breath of fresh air after the dark winter, this spring centerpiece is a welcoming mix of delicate blooms in an old garden pot. Parrot tulips, jonquils, spirea, eriostemon, sweet peas and quince branches in hues of pink, white, yellow and green project a soft, airy feel. In the spring, gardeners can be resourceful and use plants from their own yard, from tulips to jonquils and blooming branches.
CLAIRE WALDBART KRAMER Alex Waldbart Florist This early spring mix of yellow and white tulips, lilies, daffodils, alstroemeria, hydrangeas and ranunculus in gold-tinted mercury glass vases brings the sunshine inside. The arrangement showcases some of the popular trends for the season, such as white hydrangeas. Additional trends include the use of family heirloom vases for added charm, foliage runners down the table or woven into circle, and the placement of floral arrangements beyond the dining table—atop the mantle, on a kitchen island or in the center of a coffee table.

KEN MIESNER Ken Miesner’s Flowers Spring is a wonderful time of rebirth. To welcome the season, this arrangement of tulips, hyacinths, freesia, jonquils and soft foliage is bunched together in a glass vase with leaves and moss for depth, color and impact. Another way to share fragrant flowers such as hyacinths or freesia is in julep cups or bud vases at each place setting. That way, guests also can take the flowers to enjoy at home.

MARIANNE PRZETAK Ladue Florist When thinking springtime, a profusion of color comes to mind. That idea was achieved in this centerpiece with forsythia, tulips, jonquils, roses, Gerber daisies, iris, hydrangeas and wax flower in a woven basket. When designing a centerpiece for a spring gathering, it’s key to consider the shape of the table, the number of guests, as well as the theme, from the color scheme of the décor to the china and linens.

PET TALK
Have You Booked His Stay?
BY DR. DOUG PERNIKOFF
C
LIENTS ALWAYS ASK ME what I believe is the best way to manage their pets during spring break vacation. Pet owners have a number of options in this regard. G e n e ra l ca te go r i e s o f management should include assurances that your pet is up-to-date with immunizations; required preventive medications or any specific medications need to be listed on an instruction sheet. Microchip or other permanent identification would be a logical step, as well. I often suggest a packet to include pertinent medical information: microchip number, contacts for owners and/or owner representatives, veterinarian information, dietary needs, and whatever other information could prove useful to the management entity caring for your pet(s), particularly, in the case of an emergency.
TAKE A MOMENT TO MEET THE KENNEL STAFF, AS THEY TRULY ARE THE FOLKS WHO HANDLE AND CARE FOR YOUR BELOVED PETS DAY IN AND DAY OUT. Methods of housing your pet while away may include formal boarding/kennel facilities, veterinary offices that kennel pets, a pet-sitter in their private home (or have a pet-sitter stay in your home), or have someone check in on your pets at home a couple of times daily. The latter choice is best accomplished with a person you know, or someone who comes with strong references. In most cases, it is wise to have that person visit your home beforehand, mostly to allow your pet to know him/her.
Regarding kennels, I strongly encourage a site visit and discussion with the facility management. You want to know how they manage your pets on a daily basis. You also want to know their protocols for cleaning, feeding and health emergencies. And again, it’s always best to discuss any concerns that may come up with your veterinarian. Personally, I like for the pet to have its own food when taken out of the house for boarding. That action tends to reduce incidents of diarrhea, vomiting, or even bloat in large to giant breeds. Finally, take a moment to meet the kennel staff, as they truly are the folks who handle and care for your beloved pets day in and day out. There are lots of good choices for all pet owners. You want to be sure you can leave on vacation without concerns, or regrets upon return. Talk to your vet, your groomer and your friends. You should be able to discover the best option for you and your family. Enjoy your vacation!

DOGS AND OUR HEALTH
Pet Therapy
MOLLY& the Leonard Family
ESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT COMPANION ANIMALS ARE good for emotional, mental and physical health, and have focused on dogs and their beneficial influence on people. From physical exercise gained through walking dogs to lower blood pressure and anxiety reported among those who interact with them, there are many reasons to relish the influence of canine companions. Dr. John Morley, a SLUCare geriatrician, studied how dogs can benefit the elderly. He recently spoke to Ladue News about the effects of the human-animal bond. Tell us a bit about your research on dogs and the elderly. It was a study of dogs, robots and the elderly. What we showed was that for demented people in nursing homes, robotic dogs worked virtually as well as (real) dogs. That’s probably mainly associated with people (in the study) not being able to tell huge differences—and the robotic dog being much better behaved! But there clearly is a perception that having an animal around you makes a big difference. At other levels, I think the robots are not going to work as well. If you’re not demented, quite clearly most of us would prefer a (real) dog to a robotic dog. There is a huge amount of data that shows that people form very strong bonds with animals, and this allows them to deal with illness and a variety of other events in their life. Equally to that, if you have an animal for a long period of time and it dies, you can get very depressed. It’s the power of that sort of bond. But there is no question that animals allow us to be calm, and help us to do better in dealing with a variety of difficult moments and situations in our lives.

O
NCE UPON A TIME...MOLLY, A SCOTTISH TERRIER, WAS rescued from a puppy mill by the Humane Society of Missouri, along with about 200 other dogs, including her 14 puppies. Meanwhile, Kathy Leonard, a public relations professional, had just adopted another Scottish terrier, Mack, also from the Humane Society. “I had a Westie, who was the love of my life, and a poodle,” Leonard says. “When the Westie passed away, I went to the Humane Society thinking there might be another one there.” They didn’t have a Westie, but they did have Mack, who had been found running the streets. Leonard, a member of the Humane Society’s Friends Council, took Mack home. A couple of months later, she heard about the puppy mill raid. Realizing that adult dogs take longer to find homes for than puppies, she decided to take in Molly, too. “She was about 11 months old and was doing a great job with her 14 puppies, but she was very shy,” Leonard says. “For a little while, I had three dogs, which is a lot, but it turned out to be fun—and everyone got along. But the poodle was a senior citizen and passed away not too long after this.” Although both breeds hail from Scotland, Leonard soon found out that her two Scotties were the exact opposite of her watchdog of a Westie. “They’ve been a real joy to have in the house, but they’re

LN PETS very different than anybody I’d ever lived with!” she says. “They’re very loyal, but very independent. They march to their own drummer.” Molly, the more playful of the two, even plays ‘fetch’ all by herself. “She loves to toss the ball in the air and then go chase it, and she hopes that it will land on a throw or the sofa so that she can really go after it and kill it!” Leonard jokes. “I call her my cracker jack, because she has such a great spirit, and she’s so independent.” The pair has a knack for getting into trouble, Leonard adds, like the time they were staying with her significant other, Bob Faulkner, and downed a whole box of uncooked spaghetti and a package of oatmeal. “I told him he’d have to block off that lazy Susan if they ever come over again! They’re quite the characters.” The duo lived together happily for about 13 years, until Mack recently passed away at the age of 16. Leonard says it will just be her and Molly for awhile. “She lived with Mack for a long time, and it was good for her, but I think she might blossom being the only dog,” Leonard says. That’s because Molly never fully got over her past: “Being a puppy mill dog, she does have her quirks. If you came to my house, she would never run up and greet you. If you’re around for awhile, she might let you pet her,” she says. “She even shrinks from me sometimes. I say dogs remember the things that happen to them. There are probably plenty of people who would dispute that; but sometimes, she’ll be standing still and not really looking at anything, and I know that she is someplace else.” Leonard recommends that those looking for a dog—rescue or not—really become familiar with the traits of the breed they’re considering before they take the plunge. “I was a little naive when I started out thinking that a Westie and a Scottish terrier would be pretty much alike,” she says. “Scottish terriers are very loyal—they’re as sweet as can be—but they’re not very demonstrative. They don’t lick you on the face and give lots of affection, and I think a lot of people want that kind of attention. These two are a little standoffish. My advice is, especially if you’re going to a shelter, to know what kind of characteristics you want. A lot of dogs wind up back at the shelter they came from because of behavioral issues—not because but they’re bad dogs, but because of their breed’s characteristics.” FOR YOUR OWN FAIRY-TAIL ENDING... DIVERSIONS DICK WEHNER for one more year as a theology teacher. He went to the seminary right out of high school, and he basically has his own ministry at SLUH. In fact, in his back pocket, he carries a book that has all of the Mass readings. He says he carries it because he is the biggest sinner known to mankind. He also is one of the hardest workers: His car usually is the first on the lot at SLUH at 6 a.m. and one of the last to leave at 8 p.m. However, he hasn’t forgotten his family. He is the father of 10 and the grandfather of 13. He also is the guy, who, on the birthday of all his daughters and granddaughters, he brings them flowers. That’s every birthday. That’s Dick Wehner. He knows he’s at the end of a career. And the honors and accolades keep coming in. The referees officially have renamed an award, now called the Dick Wehner Sportsmanship Awards. He was given a jersey by coach Gary Kornfeld on SLUH’s last home football game. He also was given a present by each of the Webster Groves starters on the Statesmen’s last trip to SLUH. This is an emotional time for him.
WEHNER’S WINDUP
Describe what you are going through. I cry when I’m happy. I cry when I’m sad. I cry when I don’t know why I am crying. I wanted to go quietly. I have the best job because every day, I get to wake up and be with great kids—kids who care for me, and kids who love me. What more can a guy ask for? And I get paid to do this.
BY FRANK CUSUMANO
M
Y FIRST BROADCASTING JOB WAS doing the announcements at De Smet Jesuit High School my senior year. I would always give the news on the varsity sports teams. However, often before I would go on, I’d get a hand-written note that began like this: The C-team wrestling squad under the able tutelage of Dick Wehner... I would read it all the time. Some asked me why I would be reporting on the freshman wrestling team. Two words: Dick Wehner. He was about the most passionate and positive person I’d ever met. He was one of those people you meet once every decade or so—you may not see him that often, but every time you do, you are happy. For the last 31 years, Wehner has been the athletic
director at St. Louis University High School. He has attended more than 3,800 SLUH athletic events, and has scheduled 9,650 games. There are 141 high schools in the St. Louis area, and each one has probably changed ADs five times in his tenure at SLUH, some 10 times. Wehner likely has dealt with almost 1,700 different athletic directors, but very few have the finesse of Wehner. He does things like putting Twix candy bars in the referees’ locker rooms. Or, he’ll arrange for the parents of an opposing coach to have a reserved seat behind their son’s bench. Sometimes, he just gives a hug before the game to an opposing coach who looks really nervous. Wehner is 64. This is his last year as SLUH’s athletic director. He likely will remain at the school
Have you thought about what your life will be like when you are not in this role? It kind of scares me. I have been telling kids for years to pray, and that God has a plan. It’s time for me to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. I know God is not through with me. I know he has good things in store for me. I get the impression that you look at yourself as a servant. As an athletic director, you better check your ego at the door. Your ministry is to serve the coaches, serve the people who walk into our building, and serve the boys. The parents are sending us their most valuable possession. All they want is for us to be good to their son.
FIVE THOUGHTS 1. How similar can SLU and Mizzou be in basketball? They both play six freshmen. They both basically stopped winning when they got to conference. And they both are coached by really good men with integrity. Let’s hope that they both won’t have seasons like this again. 2. The local commercial of the year is McBride & Son Home. Any time you can get Vladimir Tarasenko and Brett Hull on the ice at the same time, it’s a good thing.
4. As much as I love the Cardinals, if I had one sports fantasy in 2015, it would be to see the Blues win The Cup. 5. The worst message sent by the Little League scandal in Chicago is not that the team cheated with players outside the area, but rather, that Jessie Jackson decided it was about race.

Sub Text FAX MACHINES, PHONE CALLS, MYSPACE, IMs...it seems in the technology era, new technology becomes old technology fast. I mean, really fast. I mean, bullets have left guns slower than a fad becomes a trend becomes a dinosaur. And nothing can taint the teenage experience like being on the upward slope of the technology curve. Texting, however, seems to have stood the test of time (in 21st-century speak ‘test of time’ means three years), and solidified itself as the communication mainstay among teens. Cranky (17), Whiny (16) and Punch (14) barely speak words. I’ve been texted from the next room: Mom, can you bring me water? I guess it’s better than yelling. Texts are short. They are efficient. Don’t spend too much time analyzing them. Three question marks is aggressive. Are you coming? is a question. Are you coming??? is asking where the heck are you. Three periods is provocative. I miss you. is a statement. I miss you... means as soon as you get home, we are reenacting a scene from Fifty Shades of Grey. And of course, there are the abbreviations. You have to know your abbreviations. They are everywhere. Even though BTW has more spoken syllables than actually saying, by the way, it seems to have seeped into our conversation. So take this short quiz and see if you speak text. You don’t need to be fluent, just proficient. You know, be able to ask directions and find a restaurant in the virtual world, that sort of thing.

Fifty Shades of Grey KINK IN HIS ARMOR RATING: 6 out of 10
O
K, I’M GOING TO SAVE MYSELF A SEVERE hand cramp and ask that you just insert the phrase, No pun intended, or That’s what she said after almost every sentence here, including this first one: Let’s get started. Here, we have a movie based on a wildly popular book. Normally, a film pales in comparison to the source material. This, however, is a bit more unconventional, because the book—while steamy—is not what I would describe as beautifully constructed prose. This may be the one time where a visual is an improvement. Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) is a beautiful enigma. He is rich and powerful, and profoundly
damaged from a traumatic childhood. As a result, he has a few sexual peccadilloes. Enter Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), an innocent college student who is immediately taken with the dark billionaire. Ana is hoping for a boyfriend to take her to movies and on dates. What she gets is a profoundly kinky sexual dominant who can’t bear to be touched and has not been able to invest emotionally in his relationships. Despite their sexual impasse, the chemistry between the two is undeniable, and the question becomes, can Ana’s love help Christian overcome his demons and form a more profound relationship with her? A question that is debated while Ana— ehem—learns the ropes of Christian’s lifestyle.
This film is part one of the trilogy; and like the novel, ends in an extremely unsatisfying cliffhanger. That alone isn’t horrible: fans of the book knew what to expect. The other flaw lies in the casting: While Dornan and Johnson both are picture-perfect for the parts, the rest of the cast seems randomly assembled and irrelevant, which, of course, they are. The real story here is between Ana and Christian, and make no mistake it is fullon porn. If you are uncomfortable watching sex scenes in a movie theater, you may want to wait for the DVD. In many ways, the film is exactly like the book: a bit annoying, poorly thought-out and rambling. Oh, and hot as hell.
her husband bursts through the door with a gun, Nicky spots the con immediately, pointing out the couple’s timing errors and missteps. That’s when Jess begs Nicky to teach her the ropes. He brings her to New Orleans for a pre-Super Bowl pickpocket extravaganza; and after a slightly more elaborate con, Nicky cuts Jess loose. He likes Jess, but there’s no room for heart in the game. Fast-forward three years to another con where Nicky is setting up an elaborate scam on a shady business man. I’ll give you one guess who the guy’s
girlfriend is. And just like that, Nicky and Jess are neck-deep in a romance, intrigue and a con. Will Smith is an attractive, charismatic guy. He’s likable on-screen and there’s no question he can carry a movie. That said, he doesn’t have a ton of sexual chemistry with his on-screen partners, and this film is no exception. The movie makes a valiant effort, the twists are clever and surprising, but the palpable lack of heat between Smith and Robbie hurts the story. It’s an OK con film, but probably better for a rainy-day rental.

LOVE A GOOD CON-ARTIST MOVIE—EMPHAsis on good. A bad con movie makes me want to hurl a brick at the screen. If you’re going to go to the trouble to write a script about an elaborate con, you had darn well better line up the cherries so the slot machine pays the jackpot at the end. This film may not have the perfect house of cards precision you want in a con film, but it’s a solid effort. Nicky (Will Smith) is a con artist. He was born into the life—third-generation, if I remember correctly—and he does OK. One night, he is dining alone when a beautiful woman, Jess (Margot Robbie), asks for his help escaping a hands-y guy at the bar. When they end up in her hotel room and

Peacock Loop Diner
Order Up! IN RECENT YEARS, THERE’S BEEN AN INFLUX of quality eateries into the Delmar Loop strip to complement a few old favorites, like stalwarts U-City Grill, Blueberry Hill and Cicero’s. One of the latest in this new wave is Peacock Loop Diner. Another Joe Edwards creation, this place certainly can’t be missed, thanks to the ginormous animated, neon-lit peacock sign out front. But is it delicious, as well as flashy? We decided to find out for ourselves. Peacock is open 24/7 for ultimate dining convenience, perfect for late-night study breaks for area students, post-event noshing for concert-goers and cinemaphiles, or anyone looking for a convenient bite day or night. The interior is as bright as the peacock out front. There are four U-shaped counters lit up to resemble peacock feathers, plus multi-colored disco balls and display cases full of peacock memorabilia and assorted other collectibles, courtesy of Mr. Edwards. There’s also plenty of booths and tables, and even a semi-private booth dubbed the Peacock Carousel of Love. Finding a seat is no problem here! Food-wise, the menu at Peacock is rife with diner classics, from sandwiches to hot dogs to pie and then some. We always like to try the old standbys in diner situations to see how they stack up. At Peacock, this meant the Loop Fling ($9), a take on the slinger, and the minimally titled Burger ($6). The fling differs from the Loop Sling in that it has chorizo gravy instead of chili. It also entails two eggs (your style of choice) with a choice of meats, all served over either breakfast potatoes or

a waffle. Our creation ended up consisting of eggs sunny side up, bacon and waffle. It was a glorious, sloppy combo of all of our favorite things. The only thing that would’ve been welcomed was another side of that gravy; we’d love to see that as a menu option. Always eager to find the perfect beverage pairing, we partnered this dish with a shot of Wild Turkey ($7), a nod to our collegiate past. Also on the beverage side of things, there’s a solid selection of spiked milkshakes, specialty cocktails, local craft beers and wines available. The aptly named burger was just that, a straight-ahead, no-frills taste machine. We opted for an additional patty and some sautéed onions for an extra buck apiece. Other add-on options include bacon, an onion ring, a fried egg, even ham steak. We also tacked on a small order of French Fries ($3), skinny and crisp as the diner gods intended, and a small Onion Rings ($3), sweet circles of Vidalia onions dipped in light batter and deep-fried to perfection. Don’t get us wrong, we thoroughly enjoy the recent trend toward ‘gourmet’ burgers, but sometimes you just want the basics, done right. This burger fits that bill and then some. In addition to having some pretty tasty offerings, the Peacock also is environmentally friendly— certified LEED Platinum and everything—so you can enjoy yourself with a clear conscience. Looks like Joe Edwards may have another winner here! 6261 Delmar Blvd., 721-5555, peacockloopdiner.com

PET THERAPY continued from page 66 In your study, were the real or robotic dogs proxies for human interaction? No, they (the subjects) did have humans, as well. But there seems to be something different in the ability to interact with an animal. The other thing we’ve shown in the nursing home is that small birds (like cockatiels, for instance) are tremendously important for people, as they can form a bond that makes them happier. And there seems to be a difference between a personal connection with an animal, and a personal connection with a human. Humans tend to not always be nice; animals, on the whole—if they’re not wolves or lions or tigers, etc.—tend to be very nice to human beings. Humans, even when they’re trying their best to be supportive, often aren’t nearly as good. The human bond is a dyad where both humans have to get something out of the relationship. In a human-animal bond, the animal knowing that it’s loved is what the animal usually gets. It doesn’t ask for a hundred different things. Is there a big difference between different species of animals in terms of the benefits they can provide? People have focused on dogs for many reasons. They’re not as allergenic as cats, for instance. But

So what’s the bottom line about the role animals play with people, especially with the elderly? There’s no question that animals bring companionship, which is a very big thing, particularly if you live alone. They’re nonjudgmental companions, and I think that is really the overwhelmingly important part. Our studies indicate that 20 to 60 minutes a few times a week makes a difference. Just the anticipation of animal visits makes a difference. People tend to smile more and be happier, even if they’re depressed. People cope better, and those coping skills are a big part of what people get out of being with animals. We see animals more and more in the nursing home and hospice, and even in hospitals. We believe very strongly that animals make people feel better and happier. Personally, I could not imagine living without an animal. That said, this doesn’t apply to everybody. There are people who dislike animals. But for everyone else, interaction with animals makes a huge difference in dealing with struggles at any stage of life. They provide an easy happiness factor.

we’ve looked at all sorts of animals. For example, it was amazing to me how much of a bond people can form with chickens. So I think the important thing is having an animal that will interact with you. The ability to touch and pet it is very important.

SINUPLASTY continued from page 24 sinus surgically to get greater volume of anti-inflammatory medicine to the sinuses. This cannot be done with the balloon.” Pugliano notes that medications and nasal sprays often are tried first. “Ultimately, we base a lot of the treatment decisions on the results of a CT scan of the sinuses,” he says. “I think that’s an important part of the evaluation. It’s not just based on symptoms alone.” While some patients report immediate symptomatic relief; for others, the proof of success is in a long-term reduction of recurrent sinus problems and less need for ongoing medical treatments as a result. “Unfortunately, the data is limited on success rates,” Schneider says. “Some studies have shown success rates close to 90 percent. Other studies have shown much lower success rates. More studies are needed on this technology. If it fails, however, functional endoscopic sinus surgery may be needed.” Pugliano says the most important thing for patients to know is that balloon sinuplasty is just one of a number of treatment options. “The ENT may provide them with new treatment options over the routine use of antibiotics and nasal sprays,” he says. “A lot of times, we treat patients and then don’t see them anymore, so I really do think it can be life-changing.”
