t Ladue News, we are always on the lookout for the people, A destinations and organizations that make our home so special. No matter what story we find, the metro area highlight reel always has one theme in common: generosity of spirit. There’s no category in which this is more evident than in the work of our local nonprofits.
FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The nonprofits of our community are intrepid in their missions. They are selfless in their work. They exemplify the absolute best the metro area has to offer – and in our annual Charity Awards edition, we celebrate them. Throughout a year of countless challenges and endless need, metro area nonprofits rose to every occasion. They eased suffering, provided resources and spread hope. With so many worthy causes, our staff made the decision to expand our awards to recognize not just one but five organizations with a range of missions. We also decided to put things in the hands of the people who know this community best – you. The results of our first readers’ choice Charity Awards, featured starting on Page 27, prove that our readers have a deep passion for supporting local causes – and we couldn’t be more excited to share the amazing work of these charities with you now. Can’t get enough Charity Awards? We can’t either. To get a glimpse at a day in the life of working with one of these organizations, be sure to follow us on Instagram @laduenews in the coming weeks. Each award-winner will have the opportunity to take over our page for a day to showcase why those nonprofits do what they do – and how you can get involved. A sincere thank you to all of our nominees this year for making our home and our world a better place to be. And thank you, dear readers, for voting and allowing us to recognize their efforts.

ON THE COVER GENOVESE JEWELERS
A Shopping
Celebration Celeb By Maggie Peters | Photos by Christina Kling-Garrett
T
here’s never a wrong time to show a loved one you care with that iconic blue box from Genovese Jewelers, but this summer, the family-owned jeweler is giving you the best time with its 40th Anniversary Celebration Sale. “Every year we have a sale we call ‘the One Sale’ because it’s once a year,” explains Genovese executive buyer Katie Kelly. “This year, we’ve pulled it in with our 40th anniversary; it’s going to be a fun celebration.” Opened in 1981, Genovese is one of the largest jewelers in the country and has remained locally owned and operated throughout its 40 years of business. Today, Genovese offers an unparalleled selection – including in-housedesigned and -created custom jewelry – and provides every client five-star service from the moment he or she walks in. To kick off the 40th anniversary sale, on June 19, Genovese will have live music, food trucks and drinks in celebration. The sale, running for two weeks, until July 1, includes all merchandise excluding loose diamonds and custom jewelry. “This is a true sale; new items will be put out daily for a discounted price,” Kelly says. “It’s everything and it fits everyone’s budget.”
10
Kelly adds that the jewelry stacking trend has continued, with people using combinations of different styles and metals in their rings, bracelets and necklaces to dress up or dress down their looks. “Customers are looking to add things to their classics,” she says. “[For instance], paperclip necklaces are on trend, and people are throwing them on with a classic diamond pendant to create a fashion-forward style.” Genovese continues to create a lively and pressure-free shopping experience, providing drinks and bringing in live music on Saturdays. “It’s been great to see people spending different post-COVID,” Kelly adds. “Customers are wanting to shop local and are purchasing jewelry instead of vacations. They want items that will last a lifetime. We’ve never been so busy.” Whether it’s for a gift, for a special occasion or just as a treat for yourself, there truly is no better time to stop by Genovese Jewelers and explore its stunning selection – and have a little fun along the way. KIDS MD
EXERCISE AND ADOLESCENTS By Dr. Joseph Kahn
A
s younger children grow into adolescence, their activity patterns mature. They are more likely to participate in organized and competitive sports and can maintain activity for longer periods of time. Adults continue to play a significant role in supporting their children’s physical activity, whether through participation or encouragement. Children ages 6 to 17 should engage in an hour of moderate to vigorous activity every day in three categories: aerobic, strengthening and bone-building. Aerobic activities include running, swimming, bicycling, rope-jumping and organized sports like soccer and basketball. Typically, aerobic activities are long in duration, although short, repeated bursts of activity are valuable, as well, both in increasing cardiovascular fitness and in building stamina. Strengthening activities build muscle mass and can be unstructured (such as using playground equipment or climbing a tree) or structured (such as weightlifting with supervision and appropriate equipment). Bonestrengthening activities are critical at this age. Certain forces promote bone growth and bone strength and typically include impact. Running, jumping and sports like basketball, tennis and soccer all develop bones as well as muscle while offering aerobic benefits. It’s
important to note that bone mass starts really building during the years around puberty, and most of the bone mass you’ll live with forever is built by the end of adolescence. For more information, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has good guidelines surrounding physical activity in children. Diet goes hand in hand with physical activity. As with exercise, eating habits developed at age 3 will most likely persist throughout an individual’s life. Start your kids on the best lifestyle path when they are young, encourage them to continue as they grow and mature, and hopefully, they’ll be there to care for you in your old age!

HEALTH NOTES
LOSING SLEEP? By Connie Mitchell
D
r. Joe Ojile is busy. As founder and CEO of the Clayton Sleep Institute, Ojile is among the many physicians whose workload increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In his case, more patients have been seeking help with sleep issues caused both directly and indirectly by the novel coronavirus. “We’re seeing quite a lot of people who are reporting problems getting to sleep and staying asleep or who feel unusually tired, sleepy and fatigued all the time,” he says. Both ends of the spectrum can be a result of COVID-19. People who had COVID-19 may be “long-haulers,” experiencing sleep problems along with other lingering symptoms. In some cases, COVID-19 patients have lasting neurological or anatomical issues that affect sleep. For instance, being on a ventilator can cause both psychological and physical trauma, Ojile notes.
14 June 11, 2021 | LadueNews.com
Those who did not contract COVID-19 still may find their sleep disrupted after months of stress and anxiety. Most CSI patients are referred from a primary care physician or specialist. “In most cases, some testing has already been done, and we make sure nothing new is going on from a disease standpoint,” Ojile says. “Then, it’s largely a matter of helping people reorder their behaviors to promote healthy sleep patterns. Medication is an option for a narrow group if other interventions don’t prove to be helpful.” The tactics used to help patients regain a good night’s sleep focus on routine and healthy sleep hygiene. Ojile says that creating and sticking to a set bedtime and wake time can give people a sense of control in an uncontrollable situation. “We can’t control the pandemic, but we can control our own behaviors,” he says. That sense of control helps reduce anxiety, which in turn can improve sleep. In fact, Ojile encourages patients to consider
the pandemic a time of opportunity in terms of creating an overall healthier lifestyle. “There’s a chance to take what is a really unfortunate situation and make it a force for good on a personal level,” he says. “Of course, COVID is bad. But let’s try to turn the paradigm around and work on healthy habits. I’ve seen patients do this, and it’s inspirational.” Ojile’s general advice is not new: abide by a routine, even on weekends; don’t eat late at night; keep technology out of the bedroom and turn off screens a couple of hours before bed; and get some outdoor exercise each day, if possible. The information might be something you’ve heard before, but Ojile says the pandemic has highlighted the absolute need for remembering these strategies. “Take control of what you can,” Ojile says. “And then take these habits into the future with you.”

16 June 11, 2021 | LadueNews.com
| Preparation | Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a half-sheet pan, place yellow onion, garlic, jalapeños or serrano peppers, and tomatoes; drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Roast for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, heat remaining olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add red onion and carrots, and season with salt and pepper; cook until carrots are tender for approximately 10 minutes. Add mushrooms; cook for 5 minutes. Add spinach and pea shoots; cook for 2 minutes. Taste, and adjust seasoning as needed. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before adding 3 cups of cheese to filling. Set aside. Remove vegetables from oven, and transfer to a high-speed blender along with cilantro; blend until a thick purée forms. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Pour sauce into a shallow pan. Set a plate next to pan and a 9-inch-square baking dish
next to that. Working with one tortilla at a time, dip tortilla in sauce; transfer to plate. Fill tortilla with 2 tablespoons of filling; roll and place seamside down in baking dish. Repeat process with remaining tortillas. Pour any remaining sauce over enchiladas, and spread it with a spatula; sprinkle remaining cheese over top. Bake until filling is bubbling and cheese is browned for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully transfer to plates. Serve with avocado, white onion and cilantro, if desired.

etween the kiddos being cooped up during the pandemic and school officially being out for summer, there’s no doubt that youngsters and parents alike are ready to have some fun in the sun. • The Muny
Take a seat and be transported by umbrella to London during The Muny’s production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s performance of Mary Poppins. Kids will think this magical moment is nothing shy of “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” But if Mary Poppins doesn’t please your pack, there’s certainly more fun in store during The Muny’s 2021 season for the family to enjoy, such as The Sound of Music, Sweeney Todd or Chicago, to name a few.
Although St. Louis might be best-known for Forest Park and its sprawling historic space, the metro area has parks aplenty. From taking the kids swimming at Maryland Heights’ Aquaport, with its FlowRider feature, lazy river and multiple water slides, to biking at Eureka Mountain Bike Park or St. Charles’ County Kinetic Park, to appreciating art on a walk through Laumeier Sculpture Park, our local parks make the perfect place to enjoy quality time with your peeps.

Charity Awards By Emily Adams
Local nonprofits aren’t just the backbone of Ladue News – they’re the heart of our community and the lifeblood of the metro area. This year, the needs of these organizations deepened, more new causes and challenges arose than ever before, and the incredible work of members and volunteers alike increased tenfold. So when it came time to plan our annual Charity Awards special section, we knew we couldn’t pick just one charity to celebrate – and we also knew we couldn’t decide who to honor on our own. For the first time ever, the Ladue News Charity Awards have been entirely decided by you, our readers. We asked you which organizations meant most to you this year, and your enthusiasm and passion for local causes blew us away. Also for the first time, we expanded our program to honor a whopping total of five winners – each of which lifts up the metro area in dynamic, innovative and essential ways. We are thrilled to be able to shine a light on these five terrific organizations and all of the selfless and thoughtful work they do. As they say, it takes a village – and it’s safe to say this village wouldn’t have made it through this past year without them. Wishing heartfelt congratulations to each of our winners. Thank you for all you do.

undreds of St. Louis County children can tuck into new beds thanks to Caring for Kids. Founded by former judge and current family law attorney Susan Block in 2003, the local charity works to immediately provide essential resources to meet the needs of abused, neglected or atrisk children across St. Louis County. “We help kids from birth to age 21, and get our requests from the Family Court system of St. Louis County,” says Jan Abrams, the nonprofit’s executive director for the past 10 years. “These kids need just about anything, most often beds – we want to make them feel just like any other kid.” Caring for Kids serves more than 300 individuals a year by supplying beds and bedding, clothing, books and toys, as well as cleaning supplies, meals, transportation and gift cards during the pandemic. “Kids right here in our community, who live next door to me and you, need help,” Abrams says, noting the organization can fulfill a child’s request within five working days. “[Our donors] realize it’s a big world out there, and we thank them for being so aware of what we need to do in life – and that’s help people.” A small amount of money can make a huge impact in a child’s life, Abrams notes: “With $200, we can buy a bed, and with $25, we can buy bedding – that
will go a long way in making a big difference to a kid.” Among special wishes the nonprofit recently filled was for a local 5-year-old girl who has spent her life in three different foster homes. “All she wanted was a purple bicycle, and for $118, we got her a purple bike,” Abrams says. “That’s going to change that little girl’s life because she now knows there’s someone out there who cares about her … and I can’t wait for her reaction when she sees it.” Abrams also recalls “the best $100 I can imagine spending” for a local 19-year-old, who has been in foster care since he was 9. “This young man, who is nonverbal and autistic, loves going to special-needs camp but needs transportation – and Caring for Kids will pay for it,” she says. “It’s a win-win because his foster parents get a week of respite, and he gets his week with his friends.” Making children feel good makes Abrams and the organization’s 15 hardworking board members feel good, she says: “I get to help kids every day, and it’s the best thing in the world. We put smiles on the faces of kids and their families – that’s why we’re here.” Caring for Kids, Inc., 8000 Bonhomme Ave., Suite 214, Clayton, 314-726-5437, caringforkids-stl.org

When Tori Foster learns of a child in need, she has to reach out and help. A former Caring for Kids board president for two years, Foster now serves on the nonprofit’s executive board and fundraising committee. “I became involved in the organization in the summer of 2015, when I met Susan Block, a family law attorney who was a judge in her previous career who saw a need in the type of services that Caring for Kids now provides,” Foster explains. “She and I hit it off – she is a very vibrant, wonderful, awesome human being, and when she told me about her organization, you can’t not be interested in helping kids.” Through the years, Foster has learned about the overwhelming need of children in foster care. “The social workers, family court liaisons and additional court contacts give us a better idea of what these children are going through and what they need,” Foster says, noting – tOrI FOSter kids’ No. 1 request is a bed. Caring for Kids fulfilled that wish of a new bed for 248 local children and served 335 children total last year. “Whether it’s a bed, a gift card for groceries or a new school uniform,” Foster says, “there is no request that’s too small or too big.”

Road to Restoration By Drew Gieseke | Photos courtesy of The Covering House
T
he Covering house is a St. louis-based organization that provides therapeutic recovery services to youth survivors of sex trafficking. The work is difficult and often takes years of investment – but the mission is essential. “We help in that restoration process,” says Sherrita allen, the organization’s executive director. “a lot of people are really focused on the rescue; we don’t even use that as a word. We are what happens after they’ve come out of their situation.” The Covering house offers two main services. One is the residential program, which is a long-term therapeutic home that houses survivors of sex trafficking ages 12 to 18. There, children take part in a comprehensive program – dubbed COVeR Care – that addresses their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being with the end goal of successfully reentering society. It can last 12 to 15 months. “We look at ourselves as a holistic program,” allen says. The other component of The Covering house’s road-to-restoration approach is its community-based services, which are designed to prevent and intervene in exploitative situations. Most commonly, this includes individual counseling, tutoring and educational support, group therapy, and identifying and empowering supportive adults.
These services are desperately needed – and especially rare in the state. “In the state of the Missouri, there’s only four or five organizations that help minors with trafficking,” allen says. awareness is key when it comes to tackling these kinds of issues. “Since everyone is talking about sex trafficking, we want to tell the real story,” allen says. “To debunk all of the myths of trafficking, especially for minors. To help people recognize the signs, especially more of the education for young people, and how to reduce those risk factors.” allen acknowledges that time can heal some of the wounds, but more still needs to be done. Monetary donations are always welcome – though the organization is careful not to tie a person’s worth to the money needed to support him or her. Individuals can also push for legislation that holds people accountable. They can also hold themselves accountable. how? “not turning a blind eye, not saying, ‘This has nothing to do with me,’” allen says. “Getting involved. Reporting what you see. having those conversations with young people. Talking to kids and engaging with them.” The Covering House, St. Louis, 314-962-3450, thecoveringhouse.org

What inspired you to begin working with The Covering House? When I heard about the victims The Covering House cares for, I had no clue underage sex trafficking was an issue in the St. Louis area. It is still shocking to think about the age of the victims being sold on our streets. As a Photo by Kerie Griggs father of two young girls, I’m even more dedicated now than I was when we initially started helping The Covering House. What do you do to assist The Covering House? In August of 2020, I helped organize a weeklong virtual fitness event that raised more than $70,000 for The Covering House. I am also working with The Covering House to develop a program to help spread awareness by educating men’s groups about underage sex trafficking in St. Louis. What’s something that people should know about supporting survivors of sex trafficking? The Covering House takes in victims that are robbed of their innocence and childhood. These young girls experience trauma that most of us cannot even imagine. The Covering House provides the hope, support and love they need to start rebuilding their – Shane RuSSell lives. They often have to turn away victims due to a lack of funding and space at their current residential home. How do you think the organization’s work helps support the local community? Although fundraising for The Covering House has been extremely rewarding, I have found that spreading awareness about this issue is even more important. The more people that realize underage sex trafficking is an issue in our community, the more we can fight this evil act and help those that fall victim to it.

Delivering Relief, Supplying Hope By alecia Humphreys | Photo courtesy of Crisis Aid International

hen Pat Bradley set foot in the east/central African nation of South Sudan in 2000, he didn’t anticipate that the sight of its struggling communities would set his soul ablaze. However, like a spark that starts a flame, a light was created in the darkness that day – and it’s called Crisis Aid International. “At that point in time, I had been to I don’t know how many countries, but I had never seen anything or experienced anything like that at all,” says Bradley, who founded Crisis Aid, which was officially incorporated in 2002. “I made a decision that we can’t do nothing. That led to our first trip, which was basically taking a 2-pound bag of rice to 4,000 people about five months after that trip, and that’s how Crisis Aid actually began – just delivering relief supplies in war zones. And it all started out with a 2-pound bag of rice.” Now, nearly 19 years later, Crisis Aid not only has provided more than 17.8 million pounds of food – serving approximately 2.6 million malnourished adults and children – but also has organically broadened its umbrella of offerings. “We do so many different projects,” Bradley says. “We have orphanages; we do pediatric clinics and large food programs; we have job-creation programs in East Africa. We are also very much involved in [abolishing] sex trafficking here and in East Africa.” Sex trafficking is a major issue that Bradley hadn’t initially intended to take on. “We were in East Africa, and we were talking to a guy who was helping
kids who were living on the street,” Bradley says. “He told us about this whole red-light district, and I asked him if he could take us there. That night, we went down there, and it was like walking in hell.” Bradley still remembers the specific young girl who inspired the entire arm of the organization. “It was unlike anything any of us had ever seen,” Bradley recalls. “I looked at her, and I asked her if she wanted to leave, and she said, ‘Yeah.’ As I’m asking this question, in the back of my mind, I’m going like, ‘What am I talking about?’ because I had no plan for any of this. … As we were walking out, the thought crosses my mind – what are we going to do with her? But because this young girl said yes, the whole field of sex-trafficking [prevention] for Crisis Aid just literally exploded right there.” Crisis Aid now has two homes for survivors of sex trafficking – one in St. Louis and another abroad – and has helped more than 1,800 victims receive services. “Saving lives, saving souls, changing futures – that is our vision now and for everything we do,” Bradley says. “Everything we do fits under all of those things.” Crisis Aid International, 5427 Telegraph Road, St. Louis, 314-487-1400, crisisaid.org

Cindy Malott began as a volunteer with Crisis Aid. Fastforward several years later, and she is now leading its first children’s anti-exploitation partnership program. “The last 30 years, I’ve been responding to victims, and this is the first time that we have been really able to engage in a program to prevent crimes or intervene and disrupt the cycle, which is awesome,” says Malott, who has been working alongside local law enforcement officials to develop CAPP. “It’s an amazing feeling to be able to work with young people before it escalates to the point of severe sexual abuse or trafficking.” Malott says this incredible mission is all possible because of the people behind Crisis Aid and their efforts. “There is nowhere else other than Crisis Aid that we would have had the freedom to develop a program that was not funded ahead of time and really just say, ‘We need to do this because kids are being hurt and abused, and we’ve got to do something,’” – CINdY MALott Malott says. “Crisis Aid is really unique because they will truly go beyond anything that any other program I have seen to meet the needs of the survivors and let us bob and weave and respond when there is a need.”

uo dogs transforms lives. The not-for-profit connects people who have physical and emotional challenges with well-bred and well-trained dogs for different types of services. From assistance pooches to dogs that serve in facilities where comfort and medical care are provided during trying times, each canine is raised to fit the unique needs of its bipedal partner. it’s a task that’s difficult to get right – but the volunteers and staff who help make it happen are more than dedicated to the cause. “all the puppies from the litters go out to volunteer puppy-raisers who are giving up a year and a half of time and emotion and effort to raise these dogs,” says Stacy Maly-Rodgers, director of engagement and puppy-raiser. “We have to come to class once a week – that way our trainers have their eyes on the dogs every week – and we also have to do homework.” From start to finish, the process takes 12 to 18 months. Then, once puppies are turned in, they spend another four to six months in advanced training at the duo dogs kennel. during this period, trainers keep notes on the dog and provide progress updates to the puppy-raisers once per month. “it’s absolutely amazing what all goes into breeding and training these
dogs,” Maly-Rodgers says. “and the impact it has on people’s lives just blows me away.” Once the organization decides a dog is ready for placement, the pairing process begins. The cost to raise and train an assistance dog is $39,000. However, thanks to donations from local residents, businesses, schools, fundraisers and more, eligible applicants have to cover only a small application fee and the cost of equipment. duo dogs’ 40th birthday virtual gala, currently being planned for September, will officially launch the K9 Bridge 4 Heroes, a program that specializes in dogs trained to assist veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. during the pilot phase of this new service, K9 Bridge 4 Heroes is already making a tremendous impact. “The first veteran that we placed a dog with, when he came to us, he wasn’t driving,” Maly-Rodgers explains. “He didn’t go to stores. He didn’t interact with people. What’s amazing is, when we did the final placement with him, he’s able to live his life and not feel confined to his home. The fact that this dog has changed his life, it’s unbelievable.” Duo Dogs, 10955 Linpage Place, St. Louis, 314-997-2325, duodogs.org

How much time do you spend each week helping with Duo Dogs? My job here at Duo is definitely a labor of love, as I often work 12-plushour days, evenings and weekends. From overseeing the breeding program, puppyraisers, advanced training, to placement. Along with people management, and helping to promote Team Duo, there is never a shortage of work for me here. What’s your favorite part about helping train canines for Duo Dogs? My favorite part of my job here at Duo is developing and running the PTSD program. I never cease to be amazed at what a dog can learn to do for us when given the right motivation, encouragement, love and guidance. As training methods continue to improve and evolve, the ability we have to teach these amazing dogs increasingly difficult and complex behaviors continues to grow. What is it about dogs that inspires you to work so closely with them? I think it is a dog’s ability to truly love unconditionally that inspires me to be the very best trainer and – SuSanne Wandling advocate for their fair and loving treatment that I can be. What’s something surprising about working with dogs that many people might not know? I think that many people, including many dog trainers, are still using very compulsive methods of training, when it has been scientifically proven that marker training is so much better and more productive in so many ways.
[I]t is a dog’s ability to truly love unconditionally that inspires me.”

rom the U.S., to the plains of Tanzania, to the ecuadorian rainforest, to the most remote corners of Colombia, Wings of hope is changing and saving lives through the power of aviation. Twice nominated for the nobel peace prize, the 58-year-old global humanitarian nonprofit provides free U.S. medical air transport flights to people who need special care within a 900-mile radius of its St. louis headquarters and partners with organizations in 10 countries around the world to offer medevac flights and health care access for remote communities. “all of our pilots and medics are volunteers,” president and Ceo Bret heinrich says, noting the nonprofit has more than 350 volunteers. “We have an amazing collection of dedicated people who are bringing high-level skills to the organization.” Through 200 annual U.S. flights and countless transports around the world, Wings of hope helps 70,000 people each year. “We are reaching people who are forgotten, with care that we take for granted,” heinrich notes. many patients become Wings of hope “frequent flyers,” as their conditions require multiple rounds of treatment, from adults battling cancer to infants with orthopedic conditions. “We see these children grow up before our eyes,” heinrich says. “one young patient, elizabeth, had a condition that only allowed her to ‘army crawl’ – then she was in a wheelchair and then in leg braces. We look forward to seeing her run across the hangar and play like all
kids do.” heinrich says the nonprofit’s pilots love flying patients – who often become family: “each flight, we always try to have the same volunteers available, to give [the patient] a sense of security and family.” a new initiative taking flight at Wings of hope in recent years is aimed at building the future pipeline of global humanitarianism. With the help of Boeing and maritz, the charity’s Soar Into STem program introduces students to aviation careers. “last year, students worked on an aircraft that was put into service in paraguay,” heinrich says. “They were able to see how the plane they touched with their hands, right here in St. louis, is touching the lives of people around the world.” Wings of hope’s dedication to its mission reminds heinrich of when president John F. Kennedy visited naSa before the moon landing. “he’s walking through the halls, asking people their roles, and there’s a janitor sweeping, and he says: ‘What do you do here, sir?’ and the janitor replies: ‘mr. president, I’m here to put a man on the moon,’” heinrich says. “It’s that kind of singular focus we have at Wings of hope – everyone is here to change and save lives through the power of aviation.” Wings of Hope, 18370 Wings of Hope Blvd., Chesterfield, 636-537-1302, wingsofhope.ngo

Wings of Hope captured 80-year-old Carolyn Hampel’s heart from day one. Hampel, who spent 50 years in the medical field and beat cancer twice, thought she had seen it all – that is, until her first time volunteering for Wings of Hope more than six years ago. At that time, she spotted a tiny patient being transported into St. Louis for medical care. “I saw this little baby in his pumpkin seat being flown in here for treatment,” she recalls. “I thought I was going to lose it – it was so heartwarming.” Some 18 Wings of Hope flights later, and Hampel says: “This little guy with casts on his legs was able to have braces put on and walk ... and now he runs.” Among Hampel’s many projects for the organization through the years was an exterior facelift, complete with gorgeous pollinator gardens and a new monument sign. “What takes place inside Wings of Hope is so wonderful,” she says. “The people who come inside – our patients, our volunteers, our donors and the staff – see the beautiful work taking place. But if people pull up and see 2-foot-high weeds in your front – Carolyn hampel yard, that doesn’t make for very good curb appeal. That’s why I wanted to make Wings of Hope as beautiful outside as is the work being done on the inside.” Hampel is available to help whenever asked, the nonprofit’s staff says. But if you ask her, she humbly replies: “I’m a little grain of salt – or I should say, pepper – of the whole operation. There are so many here who give so much.”

fter reflecting on the last year and wondering how she could help those hurt most by the COVID-19 pandemic, Stephanie Pohlman of Stephanie Pohlman Designs decided to offer her talents to a deserving family as part of what she calls the Design for Good project. The contest launched in March and culminated in a bedroom makeover for a couple, Bonnie and Jack, living in Maryland Heights. “They stuck out to me with their story,” Pohlman says. “She’s a health care worker, and she was working on the frontlines with COVID patients, and he actually lost his father to COVID.” The project brought light into the couple’s home both literally and figuratively. Pohlman’s design incorporated a neutral color palette, to Bonnie’s liking, and freshly painted white walls, thanks to a donation from Wentzville-based BRS Custom Painting. The bedroom lacked overhead lighting, so Pohlman says she relied on intentionally placed lamps and bedside sconces to brighten the space. To make the room feel larger, she opted for elements with vertical lines and worked with the

metro area’s One and Done Contracting, LLC on an accent wall. “We chose the beadboard because it has the vertical lines in it, which actually draws your eye up and makes the room feel larger,” Pohlman explains. She says that using earth tones helped complete the bedroom’s desired “serene, relaxing vibe,” featuring live plants provided by St. Louis’ LoKey Designs. In a video of the couple seeing their renovated room for the first time, smiles stretch across Bonnie and Jack’s faces as they take in the transformation. Jack was most surprised by the personal touches, like their photos hanging on the walls and wall art displaying lyrics from a song played at his father’s funeral. “It really kind of feels like they got to know us, which is very, very cool,” he says. “It’s so beautiful, and we feel so thankful,” Bonnie reacts. The couple was one of three individuals or families selected at random from a pool of about 150 raffle participants. Pohlman hopes to make this an annual giveaway and to secure more sponsors that will allow for bigger and better projects in the future. “I know there were so many deserving people that put their name in for this, and we just feel
really special that we were chosen,” Bonnie reflects. “It’s been a really hard year on everybody, so I think that this is just so amazing that Stephanie and her team chose to do this project and bring joy to someone’s life.” Stephanie Pohlman Designs, stephaniepohlmandesigns.com

S
ince 2013, Pure Vibes has been creating allnatural body butters, bars and more – and now you can shop the endeavor’s array of offerings at its first-ever storefront, located in University City. “We are so excited to share our space,” says Tiffany Wesley, founder of Pure Vibes. “It’s very natural. We have a theme of blackened wood and earth tones with lots of textures. It’s warm and comforting and inviting.” The 1,800-square-foot space – which Wesley says was split so the front half specifically supports shopping and the back half stores soaps for curing – features Pure Vibes’ plethora of products, a refill station and a mini DIY bar. “We want to be really sustainable,” says Wesley of the refill station. “A majority of our packaging has been glass, with the exception of our shower gels, so we wanted people who are local to have the opportunity to come and refill their bottles and not have to pay the additional price of a new bottle with the labels and packaging.” Wesley says the DIY bar was inspired by requests for swapping out scents in the Renew body and Glow facial oils. “We will have them a little à la carte-style, where you can choose if you want grape or jojoba or argan oil or avocado oil,”
My whole perspective and philosophy is that we’ve really overlooked the power of scent and the effect it has on our bodies. – Tiffany Wesley
Wesley says. “Then, you’ll add essential oils so you can blend it yourself.” For Wesley, essential oils are key to her creations. “My whole perspective and philosophy is that we’ve really overlooked the power of scent and the effect it has on our bodies,” Wesley says. “So if you grab the Awaken body wash, you smell lavender oil or lemongrass, and you are going to awaken and rise and get uplifted. If you were to grab the Support body wash, it has more of a grounding scent, so it makes you feel calmer and more soothed. So we are really thoughtful about pairings and going after what essential oils in our products are meant to be used for.” Each Pure Vibes product is named after the “vibe” the oil used promotes, such as relax, breathe and focus. “The idea is you would choose whatever vibe you need,” Wesley says. “That’s why it’s called ‘Pure Vibes.’” Pure Vibes was thoughtfully created after Wesley was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome. “[Pure Vibes] was really birthed out of a horrible thing – at that time, we were trying to conceive a child, we had lost a baby, and I was dealing with this condition and trying to find my way,” Wesley says. “I really just started to begin getting on a healthy journey, healthy lifestyle, and was just paying attention to all and everything I was putting in and on my body.” Wesley says she went to the bath, body, skin and hair care company Lush – which, according to its website, makes “products from fresh, organic fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics” – but was displeased with the color options and galore of glitter. “I just wanted something that was simple, pure, maybe a few herbs and essential oils and that’s it,” Wesley says. “I really couldn’t find it in the industry, so decided to create it myself.” Wesley says she read approximately 20 books on soap-making, aromatherapy and healing
before beginning to test and play with different formulas. Her first bar was the cold-process charcoal purify bar. Today, Pure Vibes offers five body bars, six cleansers and body butters, and one body oil formula. The brand has plans to release Purely Baby – a line of body wash, lotions and bum rub for infants – and Pure Vibes Home – a collection of candles, essential oils and room sprays – by the end of the year. N
istenhaus Design has built upon its “nest.” The St. Louis architectural and interior design firm – the first word of whose name translates from the German as “nesting house” – recently opened a new retail storefront. Dubbed The Warehaus, the 6,500-square-foot annex at 3412 Lemp Ave. showcases art, furniture and all forms of creative product and talents. “The Warehaus will be a literal space to show for production and showcasing of our ‘wares,’ inspired by the early American furniture makers, where design and production happened in one place,” explains principal designer Mike Wyrock. “It is going to be unique for what most people are used to seeing in St. Louis.
“When a guest walks in the overscaled front doors into a two-story, light-washed exposed-brick showroom, we hope [they] feel like they are walking into the most striking artist loft where you have gotten a glimpse into the creative individual at home working on some amazing series for their upcoming show. We want this to feel authentic and approachable, while also inspiring those who visit to see what the design experience can feel like when given some space to flourish.” Nistenhaus, built upon the core belief that every project should be the most “nested” version of a given client’s needs and desires, aims for The Warehaus to help put St. Louis on the map for design. “We know the Midwest can often be a desert for the design experience that people head to the coast and major cities to find,” Wyrock says. “We look forward to using this space as an opportunity to expand what that experience could be in the context of our region.” The new storefront also draws inspiration from its location. “This truly raw warehouse space is front and center of the historic Lemp Brewery,” Wyrock notes. “There is a built-up history of that complex for St. Louis that we wish to layer upon, but we also want to use that rough backdrop for allowing for the more polished and refined items we bring in to really shine.” The space houses a range of products and price-points, with namely higher-end lifestyle pieces on display. “This larger space will allow for us to really experience the finer antiques and art that just needs the room to breathe and the furniture that we often specify for clients, so they can actually try it out and experience the quality,” Wyrock says, noting that
Nistenhaus will continue to consign with vendors and friends who are local makers, artists and craftspeople for a rotating and expanding list that fits the firm’s vision of the interior design setting. The new store will be a perfect complement to the firm’s design studio, Wyrock notes: “These are environments to flex our design muscles and show our clients and guests what they can expect when we do work in their home and businesses, as well as when we design from the ground up with new builds.” Nistenhaus’ smaller studio remains open at 2118 Cherokee St., Wyrock adds. “It will still be a space for showcasing the smaller goods and more approachable price-point items that many have come to enjoy on [the] Cherokee antique row,” he says. Wyrock says the Nistenhaus staff looks forward to sharing the design experience with vendors, clients and visitors, as well as hosting creative and collaborative design, fashion, art and technology events in the new Lemp Avenue space. The Warehaus is all about evolution, Wyrock notes. “We do want to further explore fashion – for people of all pronouns – and that will be something we will need to partner with local talent to curate as we move forward,” he says. “We hope we can continue to adapt and evolve how we show the displayed lifestyle setting to our guests, which is approachable but also motivational for the design process.” Nistenhaus Design’s Warehaus, 3412 Lemp Ave., St. Louis, 314-553-9245, nistenhausdesign.com, nistenhaus.myshopify.com LadueNews.com | juNe 11, 2021

WHO’s WHO in real estate THE RYAN TRADITION
A Team you can
Depend On
By Maggie Peters
Photos by Christina Kling-Garrett
W
hether buying or selling a luxury property, look for a team known for its consistency – no matter the market. The Ryan Tradition has been serving the St. Louis central corridor since 1992, when John Ryan stepped up to join Anne Ryan, a top St. Louis REALTOR with what is now Coldwell Banker. Today, The Ryan Tradition continues to be a market leader with a reputation for both service and results. Comprising of John Ryan, Christina Dent and Sydney Millman, the team at The Ryan Tradition represent buyers and sellers with the highest average sale prices in the market. “We have been fortunate throughout the years to be involved with most of the top sales in the market,” Ryan says. “This year, we listed a 16-acre estate property in Ladue with a 100-year-old mansion for $10,000,000. It went under contract within a few weeks and closed at the end of April.” As people come out of the pandemic, Ryan notes that they are looking for a change of scenery, which, alongside low interest rates and homes selling quickly, has driven the market to the strongest it has been in decades. “People are looking for a change – they are either tired of their current home or realize they need more room,” he says. “I believe St. Louis, like other flyover cities, had not totally recovered from the 2008 recession,” Ryan adds. “I think much of the increase in value that we have seen in our luxury market is a correction that will generally be sustainable.” Whatever the state of the market, The Ryan Tradition has built its reputation for being a dependable team the area’s buyers and sellers can rely on. “We stand out for our presence in this market, year in and year out, and our consistent results – no one else has that longevity,” Ryan confirms. “We are very fortunate that our reputation precedes us and are conscious of the responsibility that demands.” John Ryan, The Ryan Tradition, Coldwell Banker Realty Gundaker, 314-941-0572, theryantradition.com

Design Q&A
By Maggie Peters
For me, the key to small-space landscape design is to keep it simple. Making a full colorful space is the key, but if it gets too complex, the plantings in the area may ‘explode,’ and the beautiful space that was once designed will become a jumbled mess. Choose a single key element, and lightly [and] appropriately build around it. Choose plants that have a slow growth rate. This can also be applied to small key areas within a much larger space.
I love designing small spaces because they can have the biggest impact. Pick your smallest space. Take a risk. Use wallpaper for the first time. Go bold with your light fixtures or paint color. Use wall sconces to free up table space. Pull in mirrors or a large rug. Raise your curtain rod up to experience floor-toceiling window treatments. Fall in love with the drama of small spaces!

HOW DO YOU APPROACH DESIGNING FOR SMALL SPACES?
Jenny Rausch
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN CHALLENGE?
WHAT IS YOUR GOTO DESIGN ELEMENT?
Small spaces can be challenging, but by listening to the clients’ needs, a small space can be filled with amazing design elements! Whether a powder room or a bedroom, providing adequate storage is important, incorporating chests as nightstands and vanities with storage for essentials. As in all spaces, small included, go for a dramatic and unexpected element to make a lasting impression.
Every home is unique – every client is unique. My favorite challenge is designing to the soul of the home and the souls of the inhabitants. A traditional home with a not-so-traditional homeowner? No problem! Finding the sweet spot, the perfection that marries the two, is what creates an inspired, unexpected and joyful interior, meant only for that home and that client.
My go-to design element is color. Color influences the feeling in a space and helps tell the story. Color can be defined in many ways. The way that I choose to use color is to set the mood or energy of a room based on how the client will utilize the space.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH DESIGNING FOR SMALL SPACES?
WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO FIND AT YOUR SHOWROOM?
HOW DO YOU DESIGN FOR A LARGE SPACE?
With 100,000 square feet, there are seven locally owned showrooms and five leading interior design firms. You will find home furnishings, appliances, plumbing fixtures, lighting, flooring, home theater, automation and office furnishings with expert design assistance, from single rooms to entire homes and office buildings. You will always find the latest interior fashion trends and products at the Interior Design Center of St. Louis.
When approaching a design for an expansive space, we start with understanding how the space will be inhabited. Next, the designer develops an overall vision for the room utilizing strategic paint colors to camouflage areas if it feels too large. As we tackle the layout, we work to create cozy zones that meet the clients’ needs. We’ll utilize lighting or area rugs appropriately sized for the room. Finally, we curate accessories, art and all the details to complete the overall look.

Have A Cow Cattle Company By Mabel Suen
T
he Gate District neighborhood of St. Louis welcomed in January Have A Cow Cattle Company, a farm store and café that strives to unite rural and urban. It showcases the brand’s own beef from its namesake 180-acre Hereford farm in Owensville, more than 75 miles west of Ladue, in addition to several other in-house products like roasted coffee beans, hand-harvested honey and freshly baked cinnamon rolls. The recent addition to the area’s culinary landscape comes from Steve and Lisa St. Pierre. The husband-and-wife duo previously lived in Edwardsville, where they worked as toy retailers. Roughly 15 years ago, they sold their stores and moved west, joining area not-for-profit organization Restore St. Louis. The notion for Have A Cow originated in their wish to create jobs for their community. According to Steve St. Pierre, Have A Cow seeks “to foster connection and provide opportunity for folks from different backgrounds to come together, break down cultural barriers and serve one another.” Have A Cow’s approximately 3,500-squarefoot ranch-style building sports a country-style wraparound porch with outdoor seating, and pull-down garage doors connect the patio to the barn-themed interior dining area and store. Its interior features an open floor plan with a central island. There, visitors can order food and drinks, as well as purchase items from the bakery case, meat cooler and retail shop. Have A Cow’s food menu offers such signatures as the Have a Cow Burger, a flame-broiled burger served with lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion on

a brioche bun, available with additions including cheese, bacon, fried egg or avocado. Buildyour-own salads also are available, along with sides like fries, chili and the St. Pierres’ personal favorite: baked hominy casserole topped with breadcrumbs and cheese. Breakfast-all-day options include pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and omelets. Otherwise, although St. Pierre proudly stocks his bakery case with items from Waterloo, Illinois’ Perfectly
Pastry, he also insists on having from-scratch house-made cinnamon rolls available each morning; his tall, picture-perfect version of the breakfast staple displays discernible layers permeated by gooey frosting. Customers can choose between a classic cream cheese-topped bun or a salted caramel-iced option. On the retail side, guests can peruse a selection of items, among them toys, books and soap. Have A Cow offers its hormone-free beef in such cuts as rib-eyes, roasts and briskets, as well as its own brand of honey, Sweet Justice Honey, harvested from hives at Owensville. The house java, dubbed Barbed Wire Brew, is roasted at St. Louis’ First Crack Coffee, available by the bag in two different styles.

Opera Outdoors By Mark Bretz Photos courtesy of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis
A
ndrew Jorgensen, general director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and his colleagues decided that sacrificing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic was one season too many. So although pandemic strictures remained in effect as of May 2021, enough metro area residents are vaccinated and enough progress has been made for OTSL to offer a robust – albeit different – 2021 season for its devoted audiences. The 2021 season, which opened on May 22 and concludes on June 20, will be performed entirely outdoors, staged on the parking lot adjacent to OTSL’s usual home in the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Webster University. “COVID forced us to think outside the box,” Jorgensen says, “and we’re so very grateful to have the blessing and support of Webster University as they let us take over that parking lot. It’s an absolute joy to be making art again, no matter where it’s performed!” Jorgensen says that OTSL is limiting seating to 266 people, in pods of two, socially distanced on the lot. “This year, due to various health restrictions and guidance from the medical experts at Washington University, we are at approximately 25 percent capacity,” he explains. “We’re so glad to be back to presenting live art, and it will be a joy to see people in our gardens again.” Pandemic limitations figured into OTSL’s season scheduling. “As we looked at the various challenges caused by COVID,” Jorgensen says, “our main priority was to keep artists and patrons safe. The idea of one-act operas (each 90 minutes or less) helped eliminate issues – no intermissions, for instance, [or] mingling crowds. Also, to ensure we could keep the productions safely ‘bubbled,’ we wanted works with somewhat reduced cast sizes. “It turns out there are some wonderful operas out there that fit these bills,” Jorgensen says. “There’s something for everyone this season, whether you seek comedy, drama or a world premiere!”
Shows on the 2021 schedule include Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, William Grant Still’s Highway 1, U.S.A., Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine and the tripartite New Works, Bold Voices Lab, showcasing performances of On the Edge from Laura Karpman and Taura Stinson, Moon Tea from Steven Mackey and Rinde Eckert and The Tongue & The Lash from Damien Sneed and Karen Chilton. Additionally, to be performed on Tuesday, June 15, only will be I Dream a World, a celebration of Juneteenth, on the north lawn of the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis’ Forest Park, as well as Center Stage: A Young Artist Showcase on June 19. All performances will be sung in English, and supertitles will be available for the outdoor presentations. “Of course, patrons are welcome to come early to picnic,” Jorgensen adds. “They can bring their own dinners, or they can order a
delicious box dinner from our catering partners at Ces & Judy’s in advance.” New this season is a uniform price of $39 for tickets, delivered digitally via OTSL’s smartphone app or via print-at-home ticketing. For more information, visit experienceopera.org or call the OTSL box office at 314-961-0644. OTSL also is launching a groundbreaking initiative to offer free seats to every performance in 2021. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, they’re named “Phyllis’ Seats” in honor of the late Phyllis Brissenden, one of OTSL’s most generous supporters. “We wanted to remove barriers for audiences and make our performances as accessible as possible,” Jorgensen says. READY READERS
Celebrating Dad I By Sheila Oliveri
n slightly more than a week, Father’s Day will arrive, and in that light, Ready Readers offers two tales for pops and their kiddos to enjoy together. Lola Loves Stories features the adorable title character and her father exploring her favorite thing: books! Each week, the two of them visit the library and check out several stories that inspire pretending. Lola’s literary adventures include being a fairy princess, playing a pilot exploring fantastic places “like Paris and Lagos,” enjoying a tea party, chasing friends “through the jungle”

and working on her dollhouse with her dad. Writer Anna McQuinn and illustrator Rosalind Beardshaw portray the beautiful simplicity of children’s play and give a glimpse into their worldview, where family and friends reign supreme. Kids of all ages should enjoy this and other titles in McQuinn and Beardshaw’s Lola Reads series. Based on the nursery rhyme “This Is the House That Jack Built,” Around the Table That Grandad Built by writer Melanie Heuiser Hill and illustrator Jaime Kim employs the add-on technique to celebrate a vibrant and diverse family’s use of cherished heirlooms. The story begins, “This is the table that Grandad built.” As
the table is set, generations are remembered and appreciated for their contributions: glassware from Mom and Dad’s wedding, cutlery from Dad’s grandma, napkins sewn by Mom and rainbow plates all placed carefully by grandchildren on the table that their grandfather crafted. Kim’s bright illustrations should be especially appealing. Objects in the pages feature a straightlined cut-collage feel, while children and adults look child-drawn and energetic. Children are depicted reaching eagerly for veggies harvested from the family garden and prepared for the occasion. Joining those treats are perpetual favorites like spicy samosas, tamales, rice pudding and pie. Topping the bill of fare, though, are Grandma’s fresh bread and Dad’s huckleberry jam. Grandad sits at the head of the table he built, holding hands while leading the blessing and giving thanks for the love, food, family and friends gathered there. Readers of all ages should enjoy this story with their own families – and take time to celebrate traditions of their own. Visit readyreaders.org to discover how you can join the effort to bring a lifetime of literacy and learning to our community’s most vulnerable children.
