from the

EDITOR SOME DAYS, BEING TOO BUSY AND OVERSCHEDULED AT WORK and at home can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to just want to get through your daily routine without slowing down and taking a closer look at the world around us and the needs of others – especially those most in need in our community. I’m guilty of falling into that trap, too, and so reading this week’s Arts & Culture feature on “In Plain Sight – Homelessness Exposed” by copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. Hollerbach stopped me in my tracks. “In Plain Sight – Homelessness Exposed” is a photo project launched by St. Charles’ Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service that seeks to shine a light on homelessness in the St. Charles area. Pam Struckhoff, director of program services for Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, distributed 100 cameras to the same number of homeless citizens in Lincoln, St. Charles and Warren counties to record their daily lives. After cameras were returned, eight judges chose 20 photos for public exhibition at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre from June 29 to Aug. 20. On Aug. 19, all 20 framed photos will go on auction at a ticketed event to fund Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service programs. “So often, those in poverty don’t have a voice,” Struckhoff says of the project. “As a community, we have to be their voice. This exhibit is a means of turning up the volume so people can hear.” Read more about this touching and truly important charitable project on p. 102. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

Editor’s Corner Big news for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL): Resident lighting designer Chris Akerlind received a Tony Award for Best Lighting Design of a Play for his work on Broadway’s Indecent! Congrats to Akerlind, who has been a longtime company member at OTSL. This marks Akerlind’s second Tony; he received his first award for Best Lighting Design of a Musical for A Light in the Piazza in 2005 and has been nominated on five separate occasions.

On Sun., June 11, Marketplace at The Abbey partnered with Cardinals Wives for Wishes and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri to support the annual Boots and Bling charitable event at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. The event helped raise essential funds needed to grant wishes to local children battling life-threatening medical conditions.

he Fountains of West County echoes the sentiments of a picturesque, white-picketfenced community, where neighbors know each other by name, and everyone seeks to be helpful and happy. “When you walk in, it doesn’t feel like a hotel – it feels like home,” regional director Julie Sanford says. “Every resident has their own personality, which you can see throughout the community in each entryway.” “Residents are very active,” Sanford describes. “We offer transportation 7 days a week, to doctor appointments, a variety of local stores and, of course, planned activities. Just recently, our lifestyle director had a full bus with trips to to Fairmont Park and a riverboat cruise. She continues to keep our community upbeat.” The Fountains opened an assisted living and memory care addition in January 2015, expanding the campus’ capabilities and providing the staff with specialized training. “Our new memory care neighborhood focuses on providing meaningful days to residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases,” Sanford notes. “It is important to us to offer families and their loved ones options for aging within the campus. We also are breaking ground this summer on an addition to our independent living community, which will open in the early fall 2018. It will give residents more options with larger apartments and upgraded amenities, including washers and dryers. There will be new community spaces, including a multipurpose craft room, card rooms, a social center and a Starbucks coffee bar for residents.” Artist David Ruiz’s rendering of the Starbucks The most coffee bar that will open in the early fall of 2018. important part of the health care community is its foundation of local ownership, which determines the best ways to expand based on what residents need most. “The owners are on-site and accessible to the staff and residents,” Sanford says. “Our owners are involved in the day-to-day operations, allowing our team to provide 100 percent resident-centered care.” Co-owner Janie Gammon has always been a part of health care communities, which has strongly influenced her life pursuits. “My parents had a residential facility,” she shares. “I have a background in nursing. This has been a passion of mine for nearly 40 years. Residents are like family to us.” Gammon’s straightforward dedication has passed onto the staff. “We want residents to live [according to] their own lifestyles,” Sanford states. “We provide meals, outings, in-house events and shows.” The energetic vibe is evident throughout the campus, allowing each person with a desire to live his or her best life. aring Solutions’ annual gala to benefit children and adults with developmental disabilities had the theme “Where Dreams Boldly Go!” Not coincidentally, founder and CEO Madi Hawn donned Star Trek attire and thanked guests for supporting the organization’s new Family Support Program, which includes a recently renovated property in Ferguson. The annual Valentine Award, presented by advisory council member Trudy Busch Valentine, went to Frank Haase of BC Construction for the new Valentine Place home, where individuals with developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges can go for therapeutic services while their families can get a break and support as well. In addition to Valentine and Emerson as primary donors, Haase as contractor also secured significant contributions, including his own, to this first-of-its-kind project. KMOX radio personality (and KETC’s Donnybrook TV “provocateur”) Charlie Brennan did double duty as emcee and auctioneer for the evening. Edward Jones served as the major sponsor, and The Rotary Club of West St. Louis County earned recognition for its years of support and involvement. Finally, the ever-popular Ralph Butler Band provided entertainment.

Guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, food stations, live music and a whiskey tasting as they honored both Aim High graduates, who succeed at high rates, and the teachers, staff, faculty and sponsors supporting those graduates. The four-year tuition-free program prepares students to be leaders and learners, and as a result, they achieve higher grades and graduate at much higher rates than their peers, as keynote speaker and Aim High alumnus Rodrick Brown could attest.

Aim High helped me progress my writing at a young age and gave me the basic [skills] I needed to start going toward the career path that I wished to pursue, which is writing. I want to write, be a writer, an author. I like to do short stories and poems, so Aim High gave me the platform to start on for my writing. he warmth of compassion for homeless youths recently filled the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis courtesy of Covenant House Missouri. At its ninth annual Stan Musial Hall of Fame Gala, guests bid on silent and live auction items and entered their names for a free door prize drawing of a 24-hour Tesla Motors experience. Guests also enjoyed dinner and a program with Stan Musial Youth Charter Awardees Elexus Paulk and Ricky Sanchez about how Covenant House helped them to grow and thrive, and become productive and independent adults by overcoming the struggles they faced as homeless youths. Funds raised go toward Covenant House’s many services, such as mental health, education and career development, and residential and community services.

Covenant House, of course, works with some of the toughest situations we have in society, and that’s homeless kids. At that age, you really want to help them try to change the trajectory of their life. Covenant House does just that because it takes the necessary things you need to break homelessness and hopelessness and puts them all under one roof. JON NIENAS, BOARD CHAIR

A POP OF COLOR

By Robyn Dexter

W

hen Vicki Dreste’s clients of more than 16 years decided they wanted to build a new custom home in Town and Country, they brought Dreste on to help with design in the early stages. “They were very knowledgeable and did the layout themselves,” she said. “I helped them with functionality of particular spaces.” One of these was the dining room, which sits just to the left of the front door. “Not only did it need to function properly as a dining room, but it’s also there to make a statement for the house when you walk in,” Dreste says. The backs of the chairs add a bright pop of color to the space. Dreste and her clients decided on a cut velvet fabric with pink highlights; then they went with a neutral linen for the rest of the chair covering. Dreste notes that since it’s the leasttrafficked part of a chair, the back is a great place to display delicate designs. The room’s other colorful aspect is the buffet table against the wall, which has a watery blue-green color that carries throughout the house. “We paid a lot of attention to our color palette in this home,” Dreste says.

C

ollin Garrity grew up in Belgium and Germany amid European art and architecture that would later inspire his own life’s calling: woodworking. It was at Warren Wilson College, a private liberal arts school near Asheville, North Carolina, that Garrity fell in love with the art and function of woodworking. “One day, I wandered into the wood shop with a guitar I wanted to fix up,” he recalls. “Then I started spending all my time there, building and fixing instruments for the school. I would be in the wood shop until 3 a.m.” Garrity, pleasantly surprised that he could get paid to learn the craft through a school work-study program, decided to turn woodworking into a career. “I got a lathe [woodshaping machine] and, step by step, started making all my tools,” he says. Garrity soaked in everything he could about the skill from fellow students and woodworking veterans. Through trial and error, he began crafting his own pieces, from home goods to kitchen items, such as tables, bowls, cutting boards and serving trays. “I like letting the wood speak for itself, and I’m just shaping it,” he says, adding that he aims for his pieces to be both beautiful and functional. The handmade wooden creations soon started to sell even more quickly than Garrity anticipated. So, in 2011, he began his own woodworking business, going through several names before simply settling on his own moniker, Collin Garrity Woodworking. Garrity moved to St. Louis three years ago with his beloved woodworking business in tow. He worked out of a one-car garage until a recent Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign raised enough funds for the purchase of a 3,000-square-foot, two-story historic building near the Benton Park neighborhood of St. Louis. The building’s architecture, as well as the neighborhood’s tightknit artistic community, is inspiring Garrity to get even more creative with his woodworking. “St. Louis has been incredibly welcoming,” he says. “It’s a small community for creative folks, and everyone wants to work with everyone else. Here, if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, people will find you.” Garrity also continues to be inspired by architecture, from shaker-style to art nouveau, and fine art, from minimalism to surrealism. “I turn to painters, illustrators and architects [for inspiration],” he says, adding that art and design books line the walls of his new workspace. Today, Garrity’s line of wares has expanded to coffee and folding dining-room tables, stools, bowls, cutting boards, serving trays, rolling pins, napkin rings and butter spreaders, made from walnut, cherry, maple and white oak that he finds at local lumber stores. “The [woods] are all so heavy and solid,” he says. “They are really beautiful woods that stand up to time, getting dinged and getting wet.” The minimalist, modern folding dining tables are a top-seller, created by using a large slab of wood for the tabletop and folding legs, convenient for easy shipping or storage. Additional Garrity table designs can be seen at Sump Coffee near Benton Park, while Garrity’s walnut bowls are used at Vicia restaurant in the Central West End. “The dark walnut really frames out the food well,” he says. Some of the woodworker’s most unique pieces are a French-style rolling pin, which is made in one solid piece; a Scandinavian-inspired cherry wood butter spreader; and a beefy, butcher-block-inspired cutting board with handles, designed with feedback from a local chef. It takes just a few minutes for Garrity to hand-cut his kitchen accessories, reaching a total of 20 to 30 per day, then several additional days to layer on different coats of finish. After Garrity completes the pieces, any extra wood is donated to Perennial, a local nonprofit workshop and store that offers woodworking and art classes. Items from the Collin Garrity Woodworking line can be found at multiple local homegoods stores, including Urban Matter in South City, Twigs & Moss in Clayton, Mesa Home on Cherokee Street and Lemon Gem Kitchen Goods in The Grove, as well as in boutiques across the region, such as Fern & Sycamore in Washington, Missouri, and Philomena + Ruth in Waterloo, Illinois. Taking inspiration from art and fellow artists, Garrity also has delved into working on new pieces, such as statement pendant lights and expansive wooden canvases that may accent his studio someday. “I want to build a tall, thin canvas and have my friend [painter] Erik Riley of Brooklyn paint a ladder on it,” he says. “I like things that recontextualize everyday things and make common things into something more interesting.” The whimsical woodworker also envisions building a grand, art nouveau wooden staircase, with shaker-style shelves on either side, as the future focal point of his studio. With Garrity’s artistic eye for design and passion for woodworking, it’s easy to wonder what he’ll make next. “I love to interact with wood,” he says. “I look forward to working on any piece that stretches me to the limit of what I can do.”

Mueller Prost CPAs And Business Advisors

Entrepreneurial Spirit Guides Mueller Prost CPAs and Business Advisors By Connie Mitchell

D

oug Mueller and Mike Prost were friends and colleagues at a large accounting firm in the early 1980s. “We realized we shared a vision of what a firm should look like,” Mueller recalls. In 1983, the pair launched Mueller Prost CPAs and Business Advisors. “We started small but always maintained our vision of being a trusted advisor to our clients and having a place of work we enjoyed,” Mueller says. “As entrepreneurs ourselves, we understand the unique challenges faced by many of our clients and are dedicated to serving them.” Mueller Prost provides tax, audit, accounting and business consulting services. The firm has specialty niches in the construction, health care, nonprofit, manufacturing and distribution, real estate, restaurant and hospitality, startup and life sciences industries. Staying up-to-date on ever-changing standards and regulations means the owners and staff at Mueller Prost are avid readers by necessity. “I read every day, spending at least an hour to an hour-and-a-half on technical topics,” Mueller says. “By doing so I build up my expertise that I can leverage for my staff and my clients. I’m a part of several industry organizations, and regularly reach out to others in my field across the country and go to seminars.”

Mueller notes that his firm takes an entrepreneurial approach, with both founders still involved in daily operations. Although the firm is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, it continues to grow due to its reputation in the specialty niches it services and the company culture of collaboration and teamwork. By creating a dynamic workplace, Mueller says the firm is able to attract and retain top talent. “We offer several very unique benefits including Fridays off in the summer, opportunities to play on firmsponsored sports teams and employee appreciation activities during the busy season,” he says. “We seek feedback from team members regularly and try to meet the needs of our staff with individual career pathing and flex scheduling.” The firm’s motto is “Advising with Vision,” and it’s also a guiding philosophy in helping clients seek out business opportunities, maintain a competitive advantage and thrive through every phase of the business life cycle. “Our clients’ success has been key to our success,” Mueller adds. “We provide high-touch service to the clients we serve, both at the corporate and owner levels.”

Architecture Mosby building Arts

Mosby Celebrates 70 Years of Constructing Excellence By Connie Mitchell

F

or 70 years, Mosby Building Arts has been creating beautiful spaces across the St. Louis area. With a focus on ethical customer service, enduring quality construction and personalized design, the firm brings architects, designers and builders together to plan, create and complete every project. One of the most important assets for Mosby customers is the ability to work with a single company through all aspects of the job. “We are a technologically advanced remodeling company,” explains owner Scott Mosby. “From 3-D design to every associate decked with an iPhone and iPad, to our custom-built CRM (customer relationship management) software so there’s an accurate flow of up-to-date job information, we embrace technology and stay ahead of the curve,” he adds. Architect Brian Yount is crucial to the design-build process at Mosby. A specialist in universal design and aging-in-place, Yount’s design and engineering expertise keeps all drawings and construction documents inhouse so the customer experience is seamless. And by overseeing building permits and design processes, Yount ensures a structure will meet industry standards and comply with building codes. Mosby describes his business as a family-owned company with a familyfriendly atmosphere, listed as one of the best places to work by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We treat our clients like family, too,” he says. “From start to finish.”

Assisted Living

McKnight Place assisted living

McKnight Place Assisted Living is Like Home with Benefits By Connie Mitchell

T

his is a big year for McKnight Place Assisted Living. The community is doubling in size, and the elegant yet comfortable new environment is expected to open in October. The new suites and apartments under construction will offer three different unit sizes, including a one-bedroom apartment perfect for couples or those wanting more living space, says Kelley Pollard, director of admissions. Pollard describes what the expansion has in store: “All of our suites and apartments will be more spacious with amazingly large windows, and they all will have kitchenettes, complete with full-sized refrigerators, custom wood cabinets and granite countertops. Each suite will have its own individual heating and cooling system for maximum comfort. There will be new common spaces, too, including an expanded therapy gym, a large gift shop, a chapel/theater, a green house and an art room. The full-service bistro and dining room will feature a beautiful, unimpeded view of the gardens.” She notes that as the need for assisted living increases, savvy and discerning residents expect the best. That’s why the motto at McKnight Place Assisted Living is, “The answer is yes. What is your question?” “Our residents continue to enjoy the same things they always have,” Pollard notes. “They simply have an extra level of support here.” That support is evident in the service, hospitality and care at McKnight Place Assisted Living.

Suites and apartments are decorated for each resident’s personal taste, and move-in coordinators consult with residents and families about what furnishings and items will fit well into the new space. “They’ll even schedule the movers and be there on move-in day to make sure all the pictures are hung in the right place,” Pollard says. If McKnight Place Assisted Living residents want to leave the beautiful surroundings of their home, they have many options. “We develop our social programs based on residents’ requests and wishes,” Pollard says. “Residents go to Cardinals games, the symphony, their favorite restaurant, the casino, museums and more. And it’s important for our residents to stay active and strong so we have several kinds of exercise programs. And chef Anthony Lyons’ creative, flavorful meals consistently garner rave reviews from our residents.” These interactions are among the greatest benefits of choosing McKnight Place. “Sure, help can always be brought into the home, but the advantages of living in a community setting far outweigh the isolation or other issues that can occur,” Pollard notes. “We offer the benefits of social engagement and social support. Plus, our numerous activities and engaging opportunities are offered in an environment that feels like home so residents are very comfortable. Our strong relationships with both residents and family members allow for unsurpassed care and peace of mind.”

Beauty SkinSpa

Join the green beauty revolution at skinspa By Connie Mitchell

A

fter years working in the skincare industry, Shonda Davisson believed the field had to change. “Listening to clients and fellow therapists, I began to notice a common theme between nearly every spa,” she says. “Treatments were expensive, employee turnover was very high, there was an extreme lack of training, and most importantly, the products were packed full of chemicals.” Those problems were enough to spur Davisson to open skinspa, which offers 60-minute facials and a full-service facial bar for express treatments. “Fitting a facial into your schedule and budget is easy with skinspa’s 30-minute treatments that start at only $45,” Davisson notes. “We don’t do cookie-cutter facials – all our facials are completely customized for each client.” Davisson is very selective about her staff and products. The aestheticians at skinspa are fully licensed, required to complete a 90-day training program and must obtain continuing education through the International Dermal Institute. They also use natural products and the latest in skincare tools and technologies. “Our concept is simple,” Davisson says. “A fantastic treatment with knowledgeable staff that’s convenient, affordable and fits into anyone’s busy schedule. We’re passionate about all things skin!”

Remodeling

Gundaker ConstruCtion and restoration Group

Driven by Quality and Integrity By Connie Mitchell

P

atrick Devers and Mike Kossman launched Gundaker Construction and Restoration Group in 2013. What started as a roofing, exteriors and insurance restoration company, focusing on storm-damage repair, has expanded in the past two years to include general contracting and interior restoration services. “We can now take care of new construction, decks, kitchens, bathrooms, basements and additions as well as interior water and fire restoration work,” says Devers, director of operations. The company works with homeowners and business owners, designing, restoring and building residential and commercial properties. Accessibility for people with disabilities is an important aspect of the design and building process for many projects, too. “We hire the best,” Devers notes, describing his team as “knowledgeable, professional and experienced.” Outstanding customer service is as important as the quality of the construction itself. “We employ different managers for each division, and different project managers who run those jobs.” A prime example of Gundaker Construction’s experienced staff is Kossman, who has 15 years of experience in roofing and construction and serves as director of roofing and exteriors for Gundaker. “Mike ensures he stays an expert in the field by attending leadership and industry training seminars and through hands-on training with suppliers and manufacturers,” Devers says.

Tim Littrell, director of interior remodeling, has 28 years of experience in the industry, working as a carpenter, electrician, master plumber, tile setter and painter. “Tim is an expert in his chosen field not only with his experience but by also attending shows and conventions all around the country to learn about and stay upto-date on all the latest product lines, trends and technologies,” Devers adds. From these company leaders to every crew member, Devers says Gundaker Construction stakes its reputation on professionalism and integrity. Everyone representing the company must possess and display these priorities, he notes. “Our culture is very team-oriented, even between the roofing and exteriors division and the interior division,” Devers says. “We believe that nobody can achieve their goals alone and that it takes a team of dedicated professionals to get to where we want to go. Not only do we work together, but we’re also all good friends.” Gundaker Construction and Restoration Group is dedicated to providing an outstanding customer experience and a quality product, regardless of the job, however big or small. The professionals at Gundaker are also constantly enhancing their services and offerings for customers. Case in point: The company recently became an exclusive DeWils Custom Cabinetry Dealer, making Gundaker the only DeWils dealer in the entire St. Louis region. In what can sometimes be a cutthroat industry, Gundaker Construction’s quality final projects and results speak for themselves.

Dementia Care

Parc Provence

Fulfilling Unique Needs for Those with Dementia By Connie Mitchell

E

ven before it opened 13 years ago, Parc Provence was a decade in the making. Ten years of research, planning, consulting, training and commitment went into the creation of this beautiful, homelike memory care community, explains Karen Tjaden, Leasing Director. “When you put it in perspective, 23 years ago our company was going into unchartered territory – and a subject about which people had very little understanding,” Tjaden says. “Today, we realize that the foresight and hard work was well worth it and something our community truly needed. Here we continue to nurture and assist the families as well as the residents.” Parc Provence brings a plethora of services together under one roof. Residents, who range from experiencing the earliest stages of dementia to those in the later stages who need more specialized care, live in their own intimate households while enjoying more than 150,000 square feet of sunlit space, gardens, activities and as much independence as possible. “Families, including grandchildren and pets, love to visit in these beautiful surroundings,” Tjaden points out. “This customized design also affords our staff the proper work spaces they need to make great care happen.” The care she refers to is crucial to making Parc Provence unique. Even early-stage dementia presents specific needs, which Parc Provence staff recognize and respond to. “Residents in the early stages of dementia require

an approach that consistently encourages them to use their strengths, continue making choices, and not only entertain them, but truly engage them in activities,” Tjaden says. “However, due to the cognitive challenges, concerns that do not arise in traditional assisted living, can be present.” Tjaden describes the care provided by Parc Provence to residents with early-stage dementia as “more protective, thorough and includes nursing 24 hours a day.” Traditional Assisted Living does not normally include all of this. Staff customize care based on residents’ social interactions, physical abilities and personal preferences, always treating them with dignity and respect. A varied schedule of activities is offered every day, including art and music therapy and outings to enjoy the St. Louis area. Over 200 staff members at Parc Provence are given specialized training to help them understand the unique challenges of people with dementia. Ongoing education and training keeps staff current on the best standards of care for this specific segment of the aging population. “We continue to lead the way in memory care by never allowing ourselves to become static,” Tjaden says. “We constantly create, innovate, change with the times, and with our current residents and their families. It’s the only way to continue offering the very best to those we serve.”

Dry Cleaning

Marquard’s Cleaners

High-Tech Cleaning Meets High-Quality Service and Expertise By Connie Mitchell

S

ince 1931, Marquard’s Cleaners has worked to establish itself as the finest dry cleaner in St. Louis, basing its reputation on three generations of service to the community. John Marquard began the legacy, instilling a dedication to excellence in his employees that remains the backbone of Marquard’s Cleaners’ business philosophy. “We have a real passion to serve other people,” says Steve Rimell, president. “My father used to say, ‘Treat the garment as if it’s yours, but better than if it was yours.’” Rimell’s father, Harvey, was one of Marquard’s original employees and purchased the business in the mid-1960s. Steve and his brother, Ken Rimell, began helping out when they were “as tall as the spotting board.” In addition to clothing, Marquard’s cleans area rugs, household textiles and draperies. The company also restores heirlooms and cleans and preserves wedding gowns. Marquard’s prides itself in cleaning and restoring everything from everyday items to delicate antique fabrics. “We return your fine clothing and household items beautifully cleaned and pressed, according to your instructions, on time as promised,” Rimell says. Living up to these standards, Marquard’s staff give each customer individualized attention, becoming familiar with repeat customers and

listening to concerns and specific requests regarding fine garments. The close-knit team atmosphere that permeates the business at all levels allows for this kind of old-fashioned, customized service. Individual customer attention and an ongoing commitment to the original owner’s standards are the only old-fashioned aspects of the business, however. Marquard’s techniques and tools are the among the industry’s most current. As the exclusive St. Louis distributor of Fiber ProTector, Marquard’s takes dry cleaning to the pinnacle of industry technology. Fiber ProTector is based on advanced polymer technology that leaves an invisible shield around every fiber. It’s perfect for protecting valuable soft furnishings and carpets that would usually serve as a breeding ground for germs. “When a product comes along that is simply astounding and that product is matched with a company like ours, it is amazing,” Rimell notes. To maintain their expertise, Marquard’s staff learn new techniques and technologies through participation in national associations. Steve Rimell is former president of the Dry Cleaners Guild, and Ken Rimell’s chemistry degree has served him well in understanding the science of stain removal. “Dry cleaners are everywhere,” Steve Rimell notes, “but you won’t find better service or quality than at Marquard’s.”

om Dankenbring entered the world of financial advising during a college internship with Northwestern Mutual more than 15 years ago. “I was fortunate to have several great mentors who really encouraged me to look at holistic planning, rather than solely insurance, investments or analysis,” he says. “My practice has grown every year through solid introductions from existing clients, family members, friends and other professionals.” Combining his experience with Northwestern Mutual’s immense pool of resources, Dankenbring helps clients through a planning process using analytical software and personalized service. He offers risk-management vehicles, such as life, disability and long-term care insurance, and wealth accumulation tools, including an array of retirement funds, investment funds and bonds. Northwestern Mutual is a trusted company in the financial industry, “but if for some reason Northwestern Mutual’s products are not the best fit, we are licensed with countless other companies,” Dankenbring notes. “I explain this as one ‘unique differentiator’ to clients and one of the ways we offer the best possible value.” It’s important to Dankenbring to continue educating himself and his clients about changes in tax code, market trends, new financial vehicles and technologies. Dankenbring’s team includes a certified financial planner and professionals who focus exclusively on 401K retirement plans and health insurance. “We’re able to bring significant value to both first-time investors and to those with years of experience,” he says.

STL Lifestyle & Events Takes Stress Out of Organizing By Connie Mitchell

T

here’s just not enough time in the day. That’s why STL Lifestyle & Events was created. “Organizing spaces in your home not only makes the space look more appealing, but it helps families save time searching for missing things, removing clutter and making it practical for daily use,” says owner Melissa Cook. “This also anchors our approach to the event planning side of the business,” she continues. “We take the stress, time and worry out of event planning, allowing our clients to enjoy and become guests at their own event.” Cook specializes in organization, making spaces and events functional and appealing. Her process: evaluate, plan, coordinate, execute. “We listen. I know everyone says that, but we truly listen and work with our clients to get the desired results,” she says. Cook recognizes that she’s organizing more than “things.” She’s dealing with memories, valuables and sentimental items. By building a relationship with each client, she guides them through the organizational process with honesty, accountability and compassion. Starting with a free consultation, spaces are transformed and lives are changed. “We take our best skill, which is organization, and apply it to multiple services to truly give our clients back the gift of time and create less stress in their life.”

Floral Design

Ken Miesner’s Flower shoppe

A New Tradition Blooms By Connie Mitchell

I

n 1952, Henderson’s Flowers opened on Euclid Avenue, serving the discerning customers of the Central West End. When the original owner was ready to retire in 1971, Ken Miesner bought the shop and renamed it Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe. He moved the store to Frontenac, added home décor items and art to the shop’s range of offerings, and proceeded to become one of St. Louis’ premier floral designers. Miesner earned a reputation for exquisite taste and quality over the following decades. Loyal customers turned to him for galas and high-profile events, knowing they could count on Miesner’s abilities. In 2014, he moved the shop to Ladue, and in 2016 Miesner was ready to pass the torch as his predecessor had done 45 years earlier. David Bovier subsequently took over the shop’s operations, dedicated to continuing Miesner’s long history of excellence. “Our customers can expect our expert design service for fresh flower arrangements or permanent botanicals,” Bovier says. “We provide local delivery for all our arrangements. We offer our design expertise when choosing any number of décor items offered in our shop.” Bovier, like Miesner before him, stays current with new trends in floral design and materials. He observes changes in interior design and fashion,

incorporating new looks and techniques as tastes change. He and his team of floral designers also keep a keen eye on the industry, learning from others across the country. When asked why Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe is special, Bovier points to its focus on custom arrangements. “All our arrangements are designed especially for the recipient, and every arrangement is custom-made to the specifications of our client,” he says. “As such, our designers get to know our clients’ tastes and preferences very well. There are no ‘cookie-cutter’ arrangements here, and there is never a compromise on the quality of the flowers we provide.” Bovier recognizes that flowers reflect and elicit emotions and that consideration is always part of the design equation. “The color of a rose, for example, can mean a great deal to the sender of a bouquet. If that color isn’t what they’re expecting, it’s a disappointment because the flowers’ meaning have been lost. The emotion isn’t there. We take great care to ensure the flowers we create represent the human emotions they are intended to relay,” he says. Just like Ken Miesner himself, David Bovier is continuing the tradition of unique, exceptional floral design that’s become the standard for Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe.

Caring For Your Loved Ones Like Family By Connie Mitchell

n 1994, Jacqueline Phillips established AccuCare Home Health Care of St. Louis. A nurse who had cared for her own parents in their home, Phillips had previously served as a surgical nurse, a senior manager for a private-pay health care delivery service company, and an entrepreneur who founded and operated another home health care business for more than a decade. AccuCare is different from large, corporate home health companies. “AccuCare is owned and managed by registered nurses, and we take care of individual personal needs from activities of daily living to a trip to the hairdresser,” Phillips says. “We provide non-medical or medical caregiver services based on your individualized care plan, which is developed by our director of nurses, Jane Olsen, in collaboration with the client and their family to meet individual needs, while making safety a real priority.” That personal touch and a focus on compassion and relationships developed by AccuCare staff are the hallmarks of the company. Clients may simply need a little help with tasks at home or require hands-on care 24 hours a day. “Our problem-solving abilities and quick response to client

concerns sets us apart from our competitors,” Phillips notes. “We work in conjunction with many of the local Medicare-certified or hospice-certified agencies to aid with the continuance of care.” The company is a member of the Missouri Association of Home Care (MAHC), and staff attend conferences and continuing education events to stay current with health care techniques, technologies and regulations. Phillips recognizes that quality of care is of great concern to clients and their families, and she is dedicated to ensuring her staff are both skilled and compassionate. “We set high standards and expect a lot from our caregivers,” she says. Using incentives and recognizing outstanding work is key to maintaining employee excellence, and AccuCare’s focus pays off: “Last year one of our employees received the Caregiver of the Year Award for the state of Missouri as sponsored by MAHC,” Phillips notes proudly. “The team at AccuCare Home Health Care works in an open space and communicates with each other about making life as comfortable as we can for our clients,” she adds. “Our goal is to treat them as we would our own family. We work hard to build trust in our office as well as with our clients. We want to help them remain independent as long as possible.”

Independent Living

The GaTesworTh

A Living Experience Nothing Short of Exceptional By Connie Mitchell

T

he Gatesworth Lifestyle is customized exclusively for seniors. This exceptional senior living community opened its doors in 1988, and Assistant Executive Director Christie Wolff joined the community in 1994. “The vision for this community was to create a very warm, comfortable and vibrant environment for our residents, and we’ve done just that over the years,” she says. The staff at The Gatesworth have done it so well, in fact, Forbes magazine named it one of the top 10 places to retire in America, and Ladue News readers voted it St. Louis’ best retirement community for numerous years. About 340 independent seniors reside at The Gatesworth, enjoying daily continental breakfast, scheduled transportation, weekly housekeeping, concierge services, and a wide array of programs, services and entertainment. A 100-seat theater, computer center, card rooms, library, bank, gift shop, art center, greenhouse, spa, spa boutique and fitness center with indoor saltwater pool are among the amenities residents can explore. “We also have three restaurants offering distinct experiences,” Wolff notes. “The dining options also include full room service, cocktail and wine service, private catering, and holiday brunches. All are prepared by

St. Louis Chef of the Year, Brian Hardy.” A locally owned establishment, all three Gatesworth owners who envisioned and launched this remarkable community still work on-site and are available as needed. It’s not unusual for them to stop in and say hello to residents and staff, creating lasting relationships. Many other staff members also have served The Gatesworth for years or even decades. “Another aspect that sets us apart from other independent living communities is that our residents are able to keep and invest their money as they see fit because we’re a rental community with no entry or endowment fees. This ensures future financial stability that is selfguided, as opposed to a buy-in community where a resident’s financial success can be at risk depending on the success of the community,” Wolff notes. This autonomy is important to maintaining residents’ financial independence and security. “For nearly three decades, residents and their families have told us that there is no other senior community anywhere like The Gatesworth,” Wolff says. “That’s a reputation we strive to maintain by earning it anew each and every day. For our incredible owners and staff, the bar is never static – it rises constantly to adapt to the wishes of those who call The Gatesworth home.”

AdAm Foster Fine Jewelry

Tradition and Contemporary Design Combine in Adam Foster Fine Jewelry By Connie Mitchell

O

ld-world techniques merged with contemporary designs that are informed by an artist’s perception. That’s the way Adam Foster describes his unique jewelry designs. The St. Louis native always had an artist’s eye, and he nurtured his passion at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a bachelor’s degree in traditional metalsmithing. “The process begins from the moment our clients sit down and start discussing their vision with us,” Foster says. “While we’re talking, I start drawing out their idea with simple paper and pencil. From there, I use the hand drawing to create the piece in 3-D using a computer program, and once the design has been approved, we can start the manufacturing process.” Foster’s bespoke jewelry is often commissioned by collectors and people who desire a specific design element. For instance, a significant life event or anniversary can be commemorated permanently through a timeless piece imbued with special meaning. “My drive then is to work to make all of the ideas come together in one beautiful piece that will be cherished for many generations to come,” he says. While Foster’s bespoke designs are sought-after statement pieces, his Constellation, Plume and bridal collections feature completed pieces

available through the Adam Foster Fine Art Jewelry showroom on South Brentwood Boulevard or at Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers in Clayton. Whether designing a bespoke piece or creating something for a collection, Foster loves working with gold, colored gemstones and emeralds. “To me, a hand-engraved finish gives the piece that extra touch to really bring it to life as well,” he says. “Every piece is done while under a microscope to ensure a perfect fit and finish.” One of the things that sets Foster apart is his respect for traditional techniques and history. Foster’s grandparents emigrated from Italy, and the Italian aesthetic he carries in his genes influences his work. “Growing up, my family and I traveled to Italy many times to visit other family members,” he recalls. “Italy is rich in architecture, and I always admire the ceilings in many of the older buildings. My inspiration for our Constellation line actually came from those ceilings in Italy.” The ultimate thrill is seeing his pieces worn out and about by clients. “Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind piece or part of the collections, I strive to maintain the unique feel and specialness of each and every piece of jewelry that leaves the studio.”

Genovese Jewelers Creates Custom Pieces on Time and Budget By Connie Mitchell

J

oe Genovese started working in his father’s jewelry store when he was 14 years old. The store, established by Michael Genovese in 1981, was just 900 square feet. Today, glittering cases of jewels and gems reside in a 7,000-square-foot showroom, and they occupy 14,000-square-foot of the 21,000-square-foot building Genovese had constructed in 2001. While the space changed and the business passed from one generation to the next, the quality Michael Genovese based his reputation on remains the same today. “We’re the only true manufacturer in St. Louis,” Joe Genovese, president of Genovese Jewelers, explains. “We make original pieces with better quality right here in St. Louis for less than we can buy overseas. We are so proud to be manufacturing not only in the U.S., but right here in St. Louis.” Genovese’s staple items remain the most popular in the store. Diamond studs, tennis bracelets and diamond hoops never go out of style. “Plus, young men are always in love. We sell an amazing number of engagement rings,” Genovese says. Although the store’s showroom has thousands of beautiful items to choose from, customers are also responding to Genovese’s custom designer line: Novia by Genovese Jewelers. “This line contains mostly one-of-a-kind

items,” Genovese says. “Customers love that a local business designed and manufactured a one-of-a-kind piece right here in St. Louis.” Using computer-aided design (CAD) with 3-D technology, Genovese’s staff creates custom pieces in far less time than through other methods. Sales specialists use customers’ descriptions or photos to create a detailed diagram. A 3-D rendering of the piece can be viewed from all angles using Genovese’s advanced design software. Once the image is approved, a wax model is created for final review before the skilled jewelers at Genovese create the finished piece in the customer’s choice of stones and metals. Jewelry repair is also available, including resizing, stabilizing gems and resetting stones. While excellence is the focus, a family atmosphere pervades the business, Genovese says. “The sales staff has full authority on pricing. The jewelry manufacturers know that they have my trust to make decisions. It’s a huge family here.” Quality, technology, innovation and camaraderie. It all comes together to embody the culture at Genovese Jewelers. “We make a better product for less money than all the out-of-town chains and designers,” Genovese says. “We love our hometown, and we love our hometown customers.”

Landscaping Chesterfield Valley Nursery

Chesterfield Valley Nursery Designs, Builds and Maintains Extraordinary Landscapes By Connie Mitchell

T

he 10 lush acres of Chesterfield Valley Nursery’s garden center are a destination for gardeners and plant-lovers from across the St. Louis area. Inspiration abounds as customers browse the vast array of perennials, annuals, trees and shrubs, water features and vegetable plants. However, Chesterfield Valley Nursery extends far beyond its garden center by offering complete landscape design and installation. “If it has to do with the outside of your home and creating a special space, we want to be involved, whether it’s a patio, planting space or outdoor living area,” says Bob Graeler, project manager. “We bring a tremendous amount of experience to the table,” he adds. “We can also add irrigation, lighting, water features, pergolas – you name it, and we should be able to do it.” The aim at Chesterfield Valley Nursery is to make each project extraordinary by incorporating unusual plants and innovative materials. And once an exceptional outdoor space is created, Chesterfield Valley’s property maintenance team can make sure it stays beautiful and thriving. “Each year, we’ve seen growth, even during the economic recession of 2008,” Graeler notes. “This was accomplished by fiscal responsibility, a base of great customers and God’s grace. We are truly blessed.”

Hais, Hais & Goldberger P.C., Provide Expertise and Care to Clients By Connie Mitchell

F

or more than 30 years, Hais, Hais & Goldberger, P.C. has provided St. Louis families with quality legal representation and attentive care. The firm prides itself on obtaining outstanding results through ethical, honest and fair family-law practice. Each attorney at the firm truly cares about clients, bringing thorough and devoted expertise to each case. Unlike larger firms, which have lawyers practicing in a variety of legal fields, Hais, Hais & Goldberger’s exclusive focus on family law allows its partners to support its clients both in the courtroom and outside of it. “You can be tough in court and fight your hardest, but always be kind to clients,” says founding partner Susan Hais. “A lot of law firms forget that, and think as if their clients are just a file. Instead, we support and guide them. We’re on their team, and they can rely on us.” Hais notes that the firm frequently wins their cases, and referrals from previous clients contribute to their success. “Our attorneys regularly hear from former clients, thanking the firm for helping them during their time of need. It’s these people – not files or cases – whom we serve,” she adds.

Wilson lighting

Lighting Experts Who Put Customers First By Connie Mitchell

A

family-owned business since 1975, Wilson Lighting strives to offer the most outstanding product selection, superior customer service and long-term customer relationships based on the best overall value in the business, says Brian Wilson, vice president of Wilson Lighting. “Our core product offering is decorative residential lighting, including chandeliers, ceiling fans, outdoor lanterns, bath vanity lights, etc.,” he continues. “But we also offer an extensive selection of home décor items, including framed art, mirrors, lamps, decorative accessories and occasional furniture items. Clients who visit our showroom for the first time are always blown away with the selection of products we offer.” Wilson Lighting staff attend several industry trade shows annually, both in the United States and abroad, in order to seek out the most current trends and technologies. Bringing the latest innovations back to the St. Louis area, as well as their three other showrooms located in Kansas and Florida, is important to satisfying discerning customers. Wilson notes that the “LED transformation” is just beginning and expects more LED products in the next few years. “I think the thing that sets us apart from other lighting companies begins with our unique selection,” Wilson says. “Many of the products seen in our

showroom are not shown or offered anywhere else in town. The fact that we carry back stock for instant gratification, which means no waiting for products to be ordered, certainly is a plus. But I think our level of customer service is what sets us apart the most. When clients give us an opportunity to work with them, they often comment on our superior service and come back for future needs.” Wilson is aware that online shopping has become a more popular option for many people, however, he notes that customers simply can’t count on the same level of service from an online vendor as they receive from a local retailer. Providing that extra service, should a customer need anything related to a purchase, is central to Wilson Lighting’s approach. Online competition also drives Wilson to price products aggressively, offering unmatched value. “The culture within Wilson Lighting is that we do what it takes to please our clients. Our team works together to provide a memorable and pleasurable experience throughout the entire selection and delivery process,” Wilson pledges. With more than 40 years of established quality and service, Wilson Lighting is dedicated to continuing to build St. Louis’ lighting legacy.

Orthodontist

AzAr OrthOdOntics

The Skilled Orthodontic Practice Is Now Located in Webster Groves By Connie Mitchell

D

r. Mark Azar graduated from Saint Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education in 1977 and established Azar Orthodontics shortly after. He served the people of Belleville, O’Fallon and Highland, Illinois, developing a busy and well regarded practice. In 2011, Dr. Nick Azar joined his father, Dr. Mark Azar, at Azar Orthodontics, establishing a family-owned business and building on the quality and patient-centered focus of the practice. While Mark had practiced orthodontics for decades in southern Illinois, Nick soon opened an office in Webster Groves to offer convenient orthodontic care to St. Louis area residents. Mark retired in 2013 and Nick’s brother, Dr. Joe Azar, joined the practice in December 2016, continuing the proud family tradition of quality orthodontic services. From minor cosmetic corrections to severe issues requiring surgical and orthodontic treatment, the experienced staff at Azar Orthodontics makes beautiful smiles possible. Braces or aligners are matched to the patient’s needs and may involve traditional brackets and wires, clear aligners or braces placed behind the teeth, known as lingual braces. “We strongly believe in evidence-based treatment planning,” Nick Azar

says. This means that for most children braces are best between the ages of 10 and 13. “While some young children require early intervention, this is only necessary in cases of severe skeletal and/or dental dysfunction, and in most children is not necessary. We aim to educate parents of this fact and support the American Association of Orthodontists recommendation of an initial visit at 7 to 8 years old.” Both Nick and Joe Azar are trained in cleft lip and palate treatment, working with teams from SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Washington University to treat patients. Staying current with the latest innovations in the field, they also participate in continuing education. Nick Azar serves as an assistant clinical professor at Saint Louis University, while Joe Azar is a committee member in the Greater St. Louis Young Dental Society, helping to organize continuing education events across the metro area. “The key to a successful team in any field is reliability, responsibility and a strong work ethic,” Nick Azar notes. “My father, Dr. Mark Azar, instilled this early on and, as a result, four of our team members who began with him still work in the office today, and average over 25 years of commitment to Azar Orthodontics.”

Personal Training NutriFormaNce

Putting the “Personal” in Personal Training By Connie Mitchell

D

ale Huff, owner of NutriFormance, and his staff put the “personal” in personal training, especially when it comes to helping people regain lost function or reach new health goals. “We love to work with clients with orthopedic challenges – shoulder, knee, joint replacement – that have completed rehab or are preparing for surgery,” he says. Huff’s passions are helping athletes get back on the field after injury or helping them excel in general, helping clients feel better through exercise and proper nutrition, and aiding everyone in managing stress through massage, a healthy diet and exercise. This multifaceted approach is individualized to each client. “Exercise studios that only offer metabolic style training in a repetitive fashion have caused many individuals to suffer overuse injuries because they’re over-training,” he says. “They’re doing too much rowing, lifting too much weight and getting unhealthy nutrition advice. We overcome these issues by starting most of our clients with a functional movement screen so we can really get a feel for what their body needs.” The screening involves six simple exercises that allow NutriFormance trainers to assess movement, strength and flexibility, customizing a workout based on functional strengths and deficiencies. After one-on-one training improves overall function and wellness, clients sometimes move to small group training or NutriFormance’s group fitness classes.

Pools Liquid Assets

Your Backyard Oasis Begins with Liquid Assets By Connie Mitchell

I

t’s hot outside! If you don’t have a beautiful in-ground pool to cool off in, now’s the time – and Liquid Assets is the company. Liquid Assets puts quality above all else when designing and installing a pool. Before a single shovel of dirt has been moved, the pool design is rendered using Liquid Assets’ 3-D computer software, which shows exactly how the pool will appear from every angle. Waterfalls, fountains, jet sprays and sheer water descents are among the design choices homeowners can incorporate to create a truly remarkable outdoor oasis. Once a design is approved, the pool is built entirely from gunite concrete, which is more durable and customizable than liners, fiberglass or steel-walled pools. “It may cost a bit more and take a bit longer to install than other materials, but concrete pools are a much better investment,” says Liquid Assets owner John Jacobsen. “We get excited about each pool we build. We see it as an opportunity to demonstrate our craftsmanship.” Liquid Assets’ crews maintain clear communication with clients through each step of the construction process, explaining what the crew is doing and how the construction is progressing. Heating, landscaping, pool-surround paving and covers are also available.

Julie lane, Real estate agent

Passion Fuels Julie Lane’s Real Estate Success By Connie Mitchell

I

n the world of real estate, becoming a top agent takes more than dedication – it takes passion. And that’s what Julie Lane brings to her real estate practice. Lane joined Janet McAfee Real Estate 10 years ago. “I started as the market was crashing – not a great time to launch your career,” Lane says. “However, I think because of that I’ve learned how to navigate the everchanging world of real estate.” Despite coming up in the industry during a challenging time, Lane achieved consistent success and was Janet McAfee Real Estate’s top agent in 2013 and 2016. As a full-time, full-service agent, Lane is always available to her clients. And although she works more than 40 hours a week, she notes that “I love what I do, so it doesn’t feel like work.” Staying current in the real estate business is key to success, Lane adds. “This is an ever-changing climate. I think you have to follow up every day on the market or it will quickly get away from you. This would be a difficult job for me to do part time, as things move so fast. My focus is always on real estate.”

Her intense work ethic was instilled in her by her father, a farmer who was an example of hard work through every season. “My dad always told me to work hard and love what you do, and the rest will fall into place,” she says. In addition to that philosophy, Lane approaches clients as if they were members of her own family, providing the same level of quality she would expect herself. “The best part about this career is that it’s so challenging,” she adds. “You’ll never know absolutely everything there is to know about any deal, so you must always be open to learning and be OK with that.” Lane also values the support she receives from the marketing, closing and relocation departments at Janet McAfee Real Estate. “I know they are assisting me along the way to ensure the best experience and outcome for my clients,” she says. Lane’s record speaks for itself. “I’ve managed to sell over $115 million in real estate in 10 very tough economic years,” she says. “That’s more than some have sold in twice that amount of time. I’m dedicated to what I do and dedicated to serving my clients. With the support of my great clients and colleagues, I’m able to do just that.”

Laura McCarthy Relocation Eases the Moving Process By Connie Mitchell

M

oving doesn’t just mean transferring a few things from one place to another. The process is daunting and complex for many people, and that’s why Laura McCarthy Relocation is ready to ease the way. One of the first residential relocation departments, established over 30 years ago, Laura McCarthy Relocation, part of Laura McCarthy Real Estate, focuses on excellent service and care from day one. The experts at Laura McCarthy Relocation assist transferring buyers, sellers or renters and conduct area tours for potential new hires. “As corporate culture and relocating clients’ needs change, it’s my responsibility to make sure we’re staying current with technology and take advantage of those advancements to service clients in a fast-moving industry,” explains Lindsey Sutherland, relocation director. Sutherland holds the designation of Certified Relocation Specialist (CRP), staying current on new trends and procedures through ongoing professional education and her role on the board of the St. Louis Employee Relocation Council. Laura McCarthy agents work full time and make their clients their top priority, Sutherland adds. “Our agents have a strong knowledge base and company support, which translates to a smooth real estate

transaction for our clients.” Most clients have a short period of time in which to move to St. Louis, learn to navigate their new city and become accustomed to the local environment, from schools to restaurants to the ins and outs of our wonderful St. Louis neighborhoods. Families who are relocating to the area may feel stressed and emotional. Laura McCarthy Relocation specialists understand this and work to make the move as smooth and stress-free as possible. Not only does the relocation team assist with house hunting and moving, they also provide information on local activities and businesses, staying in touch with clients beyond their closing date and ensuring they’re acclimating to their new home. Welcome packets and area tours provide a personal touch, giving new St. Louis residents a friendly point of contact as they explore the area. Maps, information about schools, neighborhoods and doctors, local recreation, and more are tailored to families’ interests and needs. “We have the privilege every day of welcoming new employees to St. Louis and making that transition an enjoyable and exciting one,” Sutherland says. “I had the opportunity to move to St. Louis myself two years ago, and love being able to both share my joy for this city and offer assurance to the transferee that they will be taken care of.”

Need a Rural Escape? Eric Merchant’s Your Man By Connie Mitchell

S

ometimes you just have to get away from it all. When that desire becomes a siren call to find a retreat away from the hustle of city and suburban life, Eric Merchant is ready to help. Merchant has 27 years of experience with all types of real estate – residential, commercial and land – and his extensive experience with land development and rural land management give him an edge when it comes to finding rural property for hunting, fishing, recreation or investment purposes. Merchant’s expertise extends to pond or lake construction, stocking and fisheries management, wildlife management, and timber stand management. “In short, if it has to do with real estate in Missouri, I can handle it and handle it well,” he says. An agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate, Merchant has three goals every day: “Show up, try not to screw up, and put others before ourselves.” Helping meet those goals are Serena Huntebrinker and Tammy Elgenman, and the team has a combined 47 years in the industry. “This approach has been getting us excellent results for almost three decades and a steady stream of repeat clients,” he notes. Merchant doesn’t just sell real estate, he invests in it himself, giving him a unique perspective and understanding of clients’ positions. “We have

residential investment property, industrial properties, retail commercial properties and agricultural recreational investment properties,” he says. “Because we’ve been managing these properties for many years, we’ve had to deal with the day-to-day issues that arise with any such ownership. This gives us a keen eye and awareness of many of the issues, problems and pitfalls associated with various properties.” Problem-solving and service after closing are points of pride for Merchant. Clients often stay in touch long after a sale is complete, and Merchant gladly assists with maintenance and emergency situations. He says this ongoing commitment is simply another sign of his team’s determination to give every client the best service possible. In fact, Merchant credits his coworkers with much of the team’s continued success. “I’ve always hired from within, and this gave me the opportunity to observe Serena and Tammy’s work ethic. Both are outstanding, loyal and very hard working.” And they share Merchant’s outlook on the business: “I love what I do, and I take it very seriously,” he says. “I work long hours almost every day. I don’t have to – I want to. It’s the right thing to do.” For information on either of the properties pictured above, give me a call! 314-541-1218.

Seniors Looking to “Right-Size” Start with Konny Schaeffer By Connie Mitchell

K

onny Shaeffer had been a real estate agent for more than 20 years. She became the “go-to” expert in 2012 after her father’s passing. “My mother was having a hard time and needed help,” Schaeffer recalls of her mom’s struggle to sell the large family home and move to a property that required less maintenance. “As we went through the process, I realized the need for specialists who can help these people – the ones who need to ‘right-size’ their lives.” That experience led Schaeffer to certify as a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES), a special breed of agent who helps those 50 and older navigate the real estate market. “These are people who may have lived in their home for years but just don’t need a large house anymore,” she says. “And they face very specific challenges. There are financial, logistical and emotional issues involved. People may simply feel overwhelmed.” Schaeffer’s clients often have large homes to sell and are looking to purchase a smaller condominium or villa where the finishes and spaces are beautiful but there isn’t as much need for outdoor maintenance and less unused square footage. “We’re seeing a nice increase in property values right now, which is giving more people the freedom to make a move,” she notes.

“And that’s important for the market because younger families are looking for those larger homes to move up to.” Schaeffer emphasizes that her clients are “right-sizing,” not downsizing. The difference lies in perception: People aren’t giving up quality of life. Instead, they’re giving themselves the freedom to spend more time enjoying life and less time taking care of a large home and property. “Dealing with years, sometimes decades, worth of belongings is a real challenge for most people,” Schaeffer notes. As an SRES, she offers referrals to professionals who can help clients organize and prioritize their belongings. She also provides referrals to landscapers and handymen, storage facilities, elder law attorneys, estate liquidators, public benefits offices and community resources. No matter what specific needs a client has, Schaeffer emphasizes “oldfashioned service.” She notes that her clients are tech-savvy, but nothing can replace the face-to-face conversations and clear explanations that she provides. Working together, she and her clients establish a plan and timeline for taking care of every aspect of the relocation process. “It’s not that you can’t manage,” Schaeffer stresses. “It might just be time to own less and live more.”

Stonecrest at Clayton View Sets the Standard for St. Louis Senior Care By Connie Mitchell

S

tonecrest at Clayton View may be the “new kid on the block” when it comes to senior living, but the community that opened in the fall of 2016 is already setting the standard in the St. Louis area, says Rachel Giffhorn, executive director. And while the community itself may be new, the people who live and work there bring valuable life and professional experience to the community. “The experience of our staff and management is unparalleled,” Giffhorn says. “Stonecrest saw a need to provide health care oversight in a setting that focuses on hospitality. When people walk in our front doors, they are greeted with warm smiles and friendly faces – not the sterile health care environment we’ve grown accustomed to.” Stonecrest at Clayton View provides assisted living and memory care perfectly nestled between Ladue, Frontenac and Clayton in beautiful Richmond Heights. “Our mission is to provide loving support in a vibrant, world-class community,” Giffhorn notes. Suites are beautifully appointed and include a state-of-the-art emergency call system, maintenance, housekeeping, basic cable, Wi-Fi and utilities. Because some of our best friends in life have fur, the facility is pet-friendly, and residents enjoy an inviting multipurpose room for games, movies and

activities, a chapel, a salon, and an on-site fitness club and wellness center offering a variety of programs and therapy services. No one will ever want for a luxurious meal at Stonecrest, thanks to awardwinning, restaurant-style ‘Dining by Design,’ which includes three chefprepared meals daily and an abundance of delicious snacks available, as well as a cozy bistro and coffee bar. All of this is staffed by caring professionals who stay current with evidence-based practice and offer both traditional and integrative care approaches. Giffhorn stresses that the culture of Stonecrest at Clayton View guides every encounter with residents, their families and colleagues. “From our interview process to orientation to our daily stand-up meetings, we rely on our core values of integrity, teamwork, expertise, flexibility and results as well as our ‘Culture Keepers,’ which are 12 guiding principles that we as an organization embrace – ideas like ‘Be passionate about what you do every day,’ ‘Work smarter, not harder,’ and, my favorite, ‘Take your work seriously but yourself not so seriously.’” Giffhorn says. “We are led to serve our residents,” Giffhorn adds. “It’s more than a paycheck. hether an individual is recovering from a surgery or illness and in need of short-term rehabilitation or facing a longer period of skilled nursing care, McKnight Place Extended Care provides peace of mind. “We offer exceptional nursing care as well as a full complement of therapy services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy,” says Christina Schulte, Marketing Director. Specialized therapies for specific conditions, such as lymphedema and Parkinson’s disease, are provided by therapists trained to treat these disorders and conditions, and all staff receive special training in dementia care. “In addition, our wide variety of social events help residents stay engaged in meaningful activities throughout the day,” Schulte says. “Each resident has different preferences and needs, and our personalized care ensures that each resident’s expectations are met.” The mood is lively as residents and staff participate in special activities designed for enrichment and enjoyment. Music therapy and art expression are popular choices, and daily exercise programs are designed to keep residents active.

Some activities are simply for fun and help maintain the community spirit at McKnight Place Extended Care. Speakers present intriguing programs that spark ideas and conversation. Ensembles and bands make toes tap and fingers snap. Small groups enjoy card games, craft projects and cooking demonstrations. No matter how much fun they have, the most important thing for residents and their families is quality of care. “Our staff is excellent in the care they provide,” Schulte says. “We truly work as a team to make each day exceptional for our residents. One of the reasons we’re able to do this is because of the longevity in key care positions and our management team. Residents and their families benefit from having experienced, well trained staff here to help them.” “McKnight Place Extended Care, like all of The Gatesworth communities, is locally owned,” Schulte adds. “That makes a difference to our residents, their families and employees. The owners are here, on site, to address any concerns that may arise. They also care deeply in the community and have chosen to build senior living worthy of their own friends and family – and it shows.”

Sleep Solutions

The bACK sTore

Better Sleep Starts at The Back Store By Connie Mitchell

J

onathan Handyside might have the best job ever. His title: chief executive sleeper. That’s what you become when you own a store devoted to helping people get the best night’s sleep possible. “The concept of a ‘better sleep boutique’ actually began in 2006,” Handyside says. “Specialty sleep surfaces like air and foam were offering sleepers benefits that traditional innerspring beds just couldn’t. Select Comfort/Sleep Number was successfully introducing the public to their technology in mall shops, and the idea of a Tempurpedic showroom as an alternative seemed logical.” When The Back Store opened seven years ago in Mid Rivers Mall, it was the only showroom in the St. Louis area featuring every Tempurpedic mattress, pillow and comfort accessory. The inventory meant that all sales associates became specialists, trained and certified by Tempurpedic to assess customers’ needs and find the best solutions. “The most common challenges sleepers face are: back and shoulder pain, partner disturbance, and temperature irregularity throughout the night,” Handyside says. To address these issues, The Back Store carries products that create proper alignment, pressure relief, minimal partner disturbance and temperature regulation.

The store features the complete Tempurpedic assortment, which responds to body temperature, weight and shape. It also showcases Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Hybrid technology and Reserve Collection. The hybrid mattresses combine memory foam and innersprings, and the Reserve Collection includes special features like lush pillow tops. “We also have St. Louis’ exclusive Rem-Fit stores inside three of our mall locations: Saint Louis Galleria, West County Center and South County Center,” Handyside adds. REM-Fit is “an active lifestyle bedding brand” combining technology and comfort. Massage chairs, bamboo and Tencel linens, and other sleep accessories round out the selection. A fourth location of The Back Store is at Plaza Frontenac. Handyside knows that buying a mattress is a big deal. After all, this is where we spend a third of our time. “Every bed we sell carries a promise,” he says. “We offer a minimum of 90 nights to try it in your home. If you don’t like it, choose another or, in some circumstances, return it altogether for a refund. We guarantee you won’t make a comfort mistake.” He also knows that mattress stores abound. “There are a lot of places in St. Louis to buy a bed,” he notes. “But if you truly want to be ‘fit’ for a better night’s sleep, visit The Back Store. Mirage Spa & recreation inc.

Mirage Brings Spa Benefits to Your Own Backyard By Connie Mitchell

I

f you don’t love immersing yourself in the warm, bubbling waters of a hot tub, you’ve probably never been in one. Fortunately, Mirage Spa & Recreation Inc. can bring the hot tub experience to you, allowing you to ease away the stress and strain of everyday life. Mirage carries Sundance Spas hot tubs, which feature highly effective and adjustable spa jets, easy-to-use control panels and ergonomically designed seating. Built-in stereo systems, exterior lighting and an array of colors and finishes customize your hot tub to your specifications. Mirage also makes maintenance easy with accessories, parts and SpaGuard and Leisure Time products to ensure clean, clear water. “We are a full service hot tub store. We provide a simple or custom installation and have factory certified service technicians,” says Karen Port, who owns the company along with her husband, Dale. Port notes that people shouldn’t be daunted by taking care of a spa. “We help people understand their chemicals and offer free water testing,” she says. “And we have a special chemical program, which we’ve had since 1998, that makes it even easier to take care of your hot tub. We have programs to drain, clean and refill your spa or maintain your chemicals.”

Many customers love the convenience of Mirage maintenance programs, and no one is tied to long-term contracts. “Because we’re a small company, there are no contracts, so it can be done for two years or two weeks, based on the customer’s needs,” Port says. “We can also do an annual check-up on your spa, deliver covers, install cover lifters, help you with service issues –pretty much anything you need.” Concerned about energy efficiency? “Efficiency boils down to energy-efficient pumps and good insulation,” Port says. “A poorly built spa will cost $40 to $60 per month. A Sundance Spa will cost $18 to $20 per month.” What most excites Port when discussing spas, however, are the potential health benefits. “Soaking in a Sundance spa will provide you with buoyancy, heat and massage. Buoyancy takes pressure off your joints. Heat dilates your blood vessels, allowing toxins to clear out. And massage works out knots all over your body.” You can own a Sundance spa for as little as $100 per month, Port says. “Sundance is the top-of-the-line spa with a history of standing behind their warranty, and we’ve been in business with the same brand for over 29 years. People come back to us over and over again because they know we’ll take care of them.”

Celebrating 60 Years of Providing Unparalleled Service By Connie Mitchell

I

t’s Diamond Jubilee year for Brentwood Travel! The oldest travel agency in the St. Louis area is celebrating 60 years in business with plans to continue providing unparalleled service as the third generation of the family-owned agency steps up. “I’m very proud to be part of the vision of Brentwood Travel and thank everyone who has helped us reach this milestone,” says Stacey Acree, senior vice president and granddaughter of Brentwood Travel founders Robert and Ruth Lurie. “I believe the secret to our success is that we do not believe in merely selling a ticket or a vacation package, but creating personalized travel experiences.” In the age of Internet travel sites, Brentwood Travel encourages customers to look around and see what’s available. Yet when it comes to putting all aspects of a vacation or honeymoon together, the experience and resources available from a full-service agency can’t be beat. “We really want to enhance the joy of travel from the moment you decide to plan a trip,” says Allison Harper, Brentwood Travel marketing associate. From complete vacation packages to specific components, including airfare, car rental, lodging and excursions, Brentwood Travels’ experienced agents know how to put together an unforgettable journey. The goal of

every agent is to guide you through the process by learning what you value and then finding you the best fit. In a time when there are so many travel packages and options online, and booking a dream vacation can seem overwhelming, the experts at Brentwood Travel know how to simplify the process and easily create the perfect itinerary for your trip. Younger travels often seek adventure, Harper notes. When they travel, they want to immerse themselves in local culture and recreation. Zip-lining, whitewater rafting, hiking, backpacking and other active pursuits are favorites of millennials, especially has more remote locales are becoming easier to access. Another popular niche travel market are foodies who plan their trips around a region’s cuisine. Specialized itineraries can take these gastronomes into behind-the-scenes tastings and the finest dining an area has to offer. Some cruise lines now offer cruises with celebrity chefs on board featuring cooking classes and dining excursions, as well. Brentwood Travel has also recently seen an uptick in couples requesting travel certificates or credit toward an epic honeymoon as part of their wedding registries. Here, agents are with clients from the initial planning stage through the trip itself, and are available to help with any emergency or question that arises.

Davey Tree Certified Arborists Provide Expert Tree Care By Connie Mitchell

J

ohnny Appleseed may have wanted to plant trees, but John Davey wanted to preserve them. In 1873, Davey came to America from England to fulfill that dream, and in 1880, he founded The Davey Tree Expert Company. Since then, Davey Tree has become one of the largest employee-owned companies in America. “At The Davey Tree Expert Company, trees were just the beginning. We continue to grow to new heights,” says Tom Beshoar, district manager. The company services homes, businesses, cities, golf courses, cemeteries, parks, campus facilities and more. “Our St. Louis location opened more than 100 years ago and has grown to serve clients across Missouri and Illinois,” he notes. Beshoar is an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist, a licensed pesticide applicator and a certified first responder who has been with Davey Tree for almost 20 years. The Davey Tree crew foremen who report to him are also certified arborists, providing expert tree care and knowledgeably treating pests and diseases. In addition to insect and disease management, Davey Tree offers tree removal, fertilization and landscaping. “We also assist customers by sharing our expertise on topics such as vegetation health care, watering recommendations and planting techniques,” Beshoar adds. “We’re happy to help keep your property in excellent shape.”

Exteriors by Mosby Enhances Curb Appeal By Connie Mitchell

C

urb appeal isn’t created by just planting a few bushes. The entire exterior, from windows and doors to roofing and siding, are important to presenting a home that shows the world you value quality and style. Exteriors by Mosby brings 70 years of experience to creating distinctive homes. “Our consultants help you choose the windows and doors that best suit your needs and budget, and a Mosby exterior construction crew installs them properly,” says owner Scott Mosby. “And our 10-year workmanship warranty is your guarantee that it’s done right the first time.” Windows directly affect utility bills and comfort levels, but customers don’t have to sacrifice architectural beauty to have energy-conscious windows, Mosby adds. “And doors are the portal to your home, so beauty is just as important as function and safety.” Exteriors by Mosby consultants work closely with customers, guiding them through an almost endless array of options. The popularity of outdoor living spaces also brings customers to Mosby for decks and patios, pools and water features, outdoor kitchens, gazebos and pavilions, and porches and sunrooms. “The Mosby goal is to take care of every need a client has when improving their home,” Mosby says. “We educate and inspire our clients so that each project is a collaboration to be proud of.”

Q&A With

JONATHAN WOO OF NEVER BACK

PHOTOS BY SARAH CONROY‌

By Julia Cain ‌The embroidered belt is a preppy summer staple and certainly an accessory well-dressed St. Louisans are familiar seeing around town. But where do they come from? One such line with a local connection is Never Back, a Midwestern collection of men’s statement belts. Ladue News caught up with co-founder Jonathan Woo to find out more about this fashion-forward brand. Tell us about the backstory – how did you enter this field? The idea to start a needlepoint belt business came about the same way many good ideas do – over tacos and margaritas. I was with my two close friends, Pat O’Hara and Stephanie Zipp. We’ve always wanted to start a business. Pat’s family is from St. Louis, and so his mom and grandma always made needlepoint belts for him. We all think they’re cool because they’re unique and tell a story, and I really wanted one. We all do a little bit of everything, but each of us brings something different to the table and have specialties: I have a background in finance, legal and web development; Pat has a background in finance, operations and a passion for needlepoint belts; and Stephanie has a background in public relations and fashion. By putting our three heads together, we’ve been able to successfully launch this business. Who is your customer? Anyone who doesn’t want their pants to fall down. While our primary customers are guys who want to look good and don’t take themselves too seriously, we’ve interestingly also had a lot of traction with women who have been buying them as gifts for the men in their lives. We even had a wedding party buy them as groomsmen’s gifts, which was cool to see. I think it’s because our designs stand out, spark a conversation, make someone smile – the possibilities are endless – and probably because they’re not the same brown or black you see every day. And while needlepoint belts do traditionally skew preppy, Never Back is on a mission to spread this funloving style to the masses. Do you create custom pieces? While we do not currently offer custom pieces, we are exploring ways to monogram the leather parts of our belts and also looking into ways to possibly preorder completely custom designs. It could be something we roll out in the future and are excited about that possibility.

Where do you find your inspiration for new designs? Our inspiration can come from anywhere, but we make things we like and would wear ourselves. One of our new designs, the Grillmaster, we made because we all love grilling and hanging out with friends. We made a St. Louis flag belt because I live in St. Louis, and Pat’s family is from St. Louis. We made the S’mores belt because I’m obsessed with them. Stephanie loves fashion and brought some class with the navy-and-white pin-dot belt, as well as with the Clark and Meriwether check

patterns, which we named after Lewis and Clark. Besides that, we solicit feedback from our circles of friends and family, and always have our eyes peeled for seeds of inspiration from everywhere we go – especially from St. Louis and Chicago. What is the design and execution process like? Once an idea for a design is decided, Pat is our in-house designer and takes hours upon hours perfecting each design on paper. We usually go through multiple rounds of edits on each design before it ultimately comes to fruition. We pay very close attention to the placement of every stitch, the shade of each color, the leather and the hardware. Once the designs are finalized, we work with a company overseas to produce them. Each belt is handstitched, and so this part of the process is also timeintensive. Once we have the full order of belts, we handinspect each one for quality assurance and get ready for launch by conducting photo shoots and prepping our media materials. And then it’s go time!

St. Louis-based Esther er & Mila specializes in all-natural skin care products. products

T

renna edwards-Quevreaux says she has always been obsessed with personal care products. “In fact, [I] had so many that in high school, all of my friends would come over to my house, and we would just sit and dig through all that I had amassed for hours on end,” she says. “everything about skin care, wellness and beauty products fascinated me – their packaging, their active ingredients, all of the magic of their claims.” In true “do what you know” fashion, edwards-Quevreaux founded a small-batch apothecary line in St. Louis called esther & Mila, but between high school and the launch, there was a small delay – of 20-some years. edwards-Quevreaux says she became very interested in health – organic eating, removing animal products from her life and so forth – while in college. After graduation, she entered the business world, eventually founding an information technology consulting firm. One day, while catching up with an old friend, she had to correct an assumption that she’d founded a skin care line since she’d always been so passionate about such products. The mistake stuck with her. “This very simple question that she had asked planted a seed, one that continued to grow over the years,” edwards-Quevreaux says. “every day I would think about what [my friend] said and would wonder why I hadn’t pursued my dream of creating skin care products. When I met my husband, who is a designer, that seed finally started to grow.” The two found a shared workspace, allowing the line to come to fruition in 2013. esther & Mila products range from facial creams to body lotions, all handmade in “tiny batches” and packaged in minimalistic containers. “I develop products using the absolute highest quality of ingredients sourced in nature to address and improve a variety of skin care concerns,” edwards-Quevreaux says.

She notes her collection, Bright, which she calls “magic in a jar,” can assist with discoloration, acne and scars. “It contains plant essences that contain the highest amounts of beta-carotene found in nature to improve the appearance of skin conditions,” she says. Other skin concerns such as firming, dryness and fine lines are also addressed in different esther & Mila products, as well as body products like body wash, oil and bubble bath. An apothecary addict could start at the top – using, say, the Calendula eye Crème, with aloe vera, calendula extract and rosehip butter – and work her way down to the Hand & Foot Treatment, featuring organic avocado and sesame oils, frankincense, myrrh and rosewood, for a full-body experience with this range. Short of a few products using certified organic and cruelty-free beeswax, all products are vegan. “The packaging was a collaboration of my husband and me; we strived for a look that reflected the essence of the products,” she says. “We both had specific visions of what the tree [on the logo] should and should not look like … For a solid year, we looked at every tree imaginable, trying to find something in nature that was exactly what we had envisioned.” The pair had nearly given up when they spotted the perfect tree on the way to their wedding in Vermont – a Kentucky coffeetree, “which makes everything about finding it that much more bizarre and beautiful at the same time. We were on an old maple syrup farm in Vermont, and there’s a Kentucky coffeetree right in the front of the estate.” This is now the base of the logo. “This holds such meaning for us, as esther & Mila was truly a collaboration of the strongest love there is; the day we forged our union was the day the tree appeared.” And these minimalistic exterior designs are not just for aesthetic purposes – she notes the look is intentional, with perks such as decreased sunlight exposure through brown glass and a clean exterior to match a clean product inside. The name on the bottle sounds equally ethereal and comes from edwards-Quevreaux’s two Persian cats. “They are experts at Zen, plus they are naturally beautiful,” she says, noting the relevance to her line promoting the natural approach to beauty. “My skin care products are all about minimalism and being natural, and the best you on the inside is the best you on the outside.” Esther & Mila, estherandmila.com

Building Bridges

‌O

By Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande

n arriving in St. Louis in the summer of 2000, we discovered a remarkable city on the shores of the Mississippi River. Demographers described it as a city of inclusive excellence, known for its ethnicity, geography and attitudes, all uniquely placed in the middle of America. St. Louis also enjoys renown for the Eads Bridge – at one time the largest suspension bridge in the country. The Eads’ construction and design set precedents in many other ways. It was the world’s first alloy steel bridge, the first large bridge to span the Mississippi and the first to carry railroad tracks. For more than 100 years, the river was considered an obstacle. Yet rather than use it as an excuse, St. Louis – inspired to think big and act boldly – built a bridge to cross both physical and mental divides. However, the bridge I now wish to address connects not Missouri and Illinois but the past and a promising future. St. Louis collectively must choose to become a bridge builder by being bold – by measuring success not by those we exclude but by those we include. The city must do this by bringing talents from diverse backgrounds and creating a remarkable force

empowered to create, reinvent and transform the community. This bridge must rise from the foundation of the strongest substance of all: humanity. Building such a bridge entails taking responsibility for others. Building such a bridge involves doing something others consider impossible. So I ask you: What bridges are being built to connect us, to empower us, to make us stronger in our beloved St. Louis? A story I recall (supposedly the basis for Simon & Garfunkel’s classic “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”) centers on a drawbridge operator who lived near the bridge he oversaw. One day, the operator received the familiar signal that a train was approaching. In reaching to pull the switch to lower the bridge, though, he saw in horror that his son was caught in its works. That sight trapped the operator into choosing between lowering the bridge and saving the lives of the train’s passengers – or saving his child by allowing the train to crash. What would you do? Most of our choices in life involve no such difficulty, but they often are clear. What can the St. Louis community do to face forward, propelled by our past to renew and reinvigorate us to prepare for the fast-

approaching future? To be sure that we reach the future without complication, we must endeavor to build bridges strong enough to withstand uncertainty and vulnerability. A future column will share ideas and perspectives on how St. Louis can build such stronger bridges from the present to a more promising future.

ln

Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande is the 21st president of the 166-year-old Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. He has a Ph.D. in economics.

The case for collaborative divorce: Settlement is not easy St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C

Most individuals going through a divorce like the idea of settling before having to take it to a courtroom. When it comes to collaborative divorce some people may question the reasoning behind it being so simple. Why would two people that are able to settle their divorce so easily want to get divorced in the first place? The reality is that many married couples have a hard time compromising and understanding each other even throughout their marriage, so when divorce proceedings begin matters can often get worse. Now, there can be hard feelings. Individuals can be upset. They may feel betrayed. This makes communication harder than it even was before. So, how can settlement take place in a scenerio such as this? In collaborative divorce, both parties want to settle. They are working to reach an agreement out of court. But they know that this is going to take work. They know that it isn’t easy. They

82   June 23, 2017 | LadueNews.com

know it will take time, and they know that they need the help of professionals because they are not capable of doing it all on their own. Collaborative divorce offers the hope of settlement where it might not be there otherwise. Both parties have attorneys on a limited scope representation — where the attorneys are committed to helping the parties settle. Otherwise, they cannot be litigation attorneys if settlement negotiations break down and litigation commences. Collaborative lawyers are generally members of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (“IACP”). They are trained in both mediation and collaborative practice. In most areas, only a limited numbers of attorneys are members of the IACP. Parties also get the assistance of professionals such as, a divorce coach, financial neutral and a child custody professional. These professionals help the parties reach

different solutions to conclude a settlement. Although settlement is preferable for most parties, it is not always an option for every party. But if two parties are in agreement and want to settle, collaborative divorce is something to consider. If you are going through a divorce, Stange Law Firm, PC is here to help you rebuild your life. COMMUNICATION CONVERSATION

304 Trailhead Way

What to Say Instead of ‘I Don’t Know’

By Janis Murray

‌N

o matter what age, each of us naturally fears that interview moment when we are asked a question, and we’re stumped! Nothing substitutes for thorough interview preparation by knowing facts on the company, the job description and the positive points you bring to the table. Interview preparation and practice are vital. But still in moments of confusion saying honestly, “I don’t know,” after a short pause of genuine reflection is all right. It’s what you say immediately afterward that matters most. Freezing at “I don’t know” implies “and I don’t care.” Instead, follow up with “but what I can tell you is this.” This will help you bridge to an achievement or thought that’s relevant to the original question. Or use “I don’t know that exact information, but I will find out and get back to you today. Which is best? Call or email?” With our beloved new college graduates facing job interviews this summer, I want to share this story. My and my husband’s son Austin was laid off 6 months into his first career position in New York City after graduating in spring 2008. The sudden recession caused his office to be cut from 200 to 100 employees by December. After a year of odd jobs that often left him glum, I picked Austin up here at the airport on a visit. He bounded into the car saying, “Mom, I have a phone interview in an hour to be rehired in Chicago!” Immediately switching caps from mother to communication trainer, I said, “OK, what’s the worst question they could ask you?” He said, “Revit!” I said, “What the heck is that?” He replied, “A software you can use to show the client changes to a building during real time in a meeting.” “Well, do you know it?” “No, we didn’t have access to it.” “Do you know of it?” “Oh, yeah.” “Austin, with access to Revit, could you learn it within a week?” “Oh, yeah! Easy …” “Even on your own time?” “Sure!” “Then, darling, that’s your answer. Go with it!” He did the interview alone in my office. By that evening, the potential employer told him, “Austin, if you can be in Chicago ready to work by 8:30 a.m. Monday, you’ve got a job.” It was Thursday night. He found a rental room over the weekend and arrived on Monday. Revit? Mastered by Friday. Two years later, his employer promoted him to Hong Kong. And it all could have ended with “I don’t know.”

Delsing posted a 2-under-68. Later, Williamson, who was 3-under through nine holes, also came in at 68. J.C. Anderson and fellow Gateway PGA member Bob Gaus each were one shot back, at 69. Williamson made a birdie at the lone playoff hole to secure the single spot in the 2017 U.S. Senior Open. Delsing’s birdie putt hung on the lip, and he became the first alternate. Anderson earned the second alternate spot in a playoff that followed Williamson and Delsing’s. Gaus hit his tee shot at the first hole left into the trees and failed to find the ball. PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE CHAMINADE RED DEVILS AND THE PRIORY REBELS

Two St. Louis teams earned high finishes in recent state golf tournaments. The Priory Rebels finished second in the Class 3 state golf tournament held at the Sedalia Country Club. In that light, other than winning the state championship in 2007, the Rebels enjoyed their best finish ever at the state meet. Priory finished with a team score of 622 on rounds of 305 and 317. Logan-Rogersville won with a 614. Priory tied for second with Nevada but won a scorecard tiebreaker. “After some initial disappointment at not winning it all, they were proud of their accomplishment,” Priory coach Jake Parent says. “I was really impressed with the team and proud of how they played.” Senior Andrew Stange tied for seventh with a 150 on rounds of 75 and 75. That score could have been slightly lower, but Stange followed the rules of golf and called a two-stroke penalty on himself for hitting the wrong ball even though no one saw him do it. Freshman Pete Weaver made a memorable top 10 debut at state. Weaver tied for ninth place with a 151 on rounds of 72 and 79. Junior Ben Blase placed 26th at 157 with rounds of 76 and 81. Freshman Alex Garza tied for 65th with a 170 on rounds of 82 and 88. Sophomore Gulshan Kodwani tied for 73rd with a 171 on rounds of 89 and 82. The Chaminade Red Devils, meanwhile, shot a two-

ngie Carl had just turned 29 when she was abruptly awoken in the middle of the night with a heart attack. “I had 100 percent blockage of the artery that takes oxygenated blood from your heart to your organs,” she recalls. It was during her subsequent blood work in the cardiac catheterization lab that she discovered she was pregnant with her first child, a high-risk pregnancy that forced her to take a deeper focus on her health by beginning to zero in on her food intake. Her health scares were not over, however – “a few years after that, I found out that I have this rare disease with my platelets that requires me to be on low-dose chemotherapy for life,” Carl, now a mother of two, says. “I feel like I’ve been fortunate to have some of these things happen; essentially, what I’m doing right now is living my dream because of these things.” The dream she’s referring to is building a business doing something that she’s passionate about and that makes a difference – which, for Carl (a native of Columbia, Missouri, who moved to St. Louis at age 13), has taken the form of Coconut Kitchen, her own line of flavorful and fresh coconut butters. The company is led by one of Carl’s many wise life mantras: “You don’t have to sacrifice flavor for better health.” After her blood disease diagnosis, which she discovered was incurable, Carl had to start taking a low-dose chemotherapy pill every day, which she must continue each day to maintain

her symptoms for the rest of her life. She began to change her diet piece by piece. “I learned awareness of [the] huge difference of what you put in your body makes, and I felt better than I ever felt before,” says Carl. Even with another big health scare and setback, she began competing in triathlons, realizing that selfcare was the key to managing her symptoms. “When I started using coconut, the next time I got my big cholesterol panel, my cardiologist said, ‘What are you doing?’” Carl says. “She was blown away at the positive change in my cardiology blood work, so much so that she couldn’t believe it.” Carl began reading and researching the idea of food as medicine, discovering story after story of individuals with debilitating, life-threatening diseases who began changing what they were putting in their bodies each day and who saw seemingly miraculous turnarounds in their prognoses. “That planted the seed in me,” Carl says. Her research brought her to coconut. “It’s so unique,” she asserts. “I was obsessed with coconut oil and

didn’t even know about coconut butter. A lot of doctors who are advocates for coconut say to use it as a daily supplement – 3 to 3½ tablespoons a day.” But even for über-health-conscious Carl, it was hard to get the daily recommended dose without eating it off a spoon. “I cannot bring myself to eat coconut oil off a spoon,” she says, laughing. Her best friend showed up at the house one day with a mystery ramekin full of what turned out to be coconut butter – and Carl, who was then working as a CPA, was hooked. “I knew I wanted to have my own business, but my path was long and winding,” she says. “I’m 38 years old, I tried this coconut butter, and I’m thinking, ‘The things I could do with this’ – [the] different flavors – and thought this was worthy of taking that leap.” Carl began experimenting with recipes and flavors in her own kitchen, creating the baseline recipes for Coconut Kitchen’s butters herself and then launching her business in 2013. Ingredients are sourced from various suppliers, with desiccated coconut, her main ingredient, arriving by pallet loads from Sri Lanka or the Philippines. The coconut is blended in Cuisinart food processors and sweetened with a touch of stevia before ingredients for the different flavors are blended in. Having outgrown her Chesterfield kitchen with an inventory demand that has required hiring additional help, Coconut Kitchen is now based out of a Food and Drug Administrationcertified kitchen in Fenton (shared with local venture Two Men and a Garden).

Coconut Kitchen currently has a line of six base flavors, including naked coconut butter, lemon zest, mocha espresso, cinnamon raisin and toasted coconut, with seasonal flavors making an appearance throughout the year. Carl says she’s working on a Key lime coconut butter for July. Like coconut oil, the finished product is shelf-stable, melts at 80 degrees and remains solid at 70 degrees, but the difference between coconut oil and coconut butter – a common question Carl hears – is the extraction process. For coconut oil, oils from the pulp of the coconut are extracted, while with coconut butter, the whole pulp is ground until smooth. “It would be like peanut butter versus peanut oil,” Carl explains. Coconut Kitchen products give customers the benefit of coconut oil, but with a wider range of options. Each jar of Coconut Kitchen coconut butter comes with serving suggestions printed right on the label – from drizzling over granola or spreading over toast to blending into smoothies – and the Coconut Kitchen website has a page dedicated to recipe ideas using Coconut Kitchen products as ingredients, such as gluten-free lemon-glazed mini cakes using the lemon zest coconut butter. The products can be purchased through Coconut Kitchen’s website or Amazon. Products can also be found in select Dierbergs, Lucky’s Market and Whole Foods Market stores; a variety of chiropractor offices; Nutrition Stop in St. Peters; and O’Fallon Nutrition in O’Fallon, Missouri. Carl hopes to expand her Whole Foods distribution to the Chicago area this year. Carl’s infectious positivity allows her to spin an upward-and-onward perspective on her journey thus far. “These are the things that have enriched my life in so many ways,” she says. “I look at life differently. All these adversities are really kind of blessings. All of the worst things that ever happened in my life, I can see some blessing that came from it.” Coconut Kitchen, 314-441-6840, mycoconutkitchen.com

est County Tex-Mex aficionados have had a new reason to celebrate since April, when a second location of Rosalita’s Cantina debuted in Des Peres, featuring Mexican classics combined with modern specialties and an assortment of margaritas. The new Rosalita’s – joining the first one, which opened in 2010 in downtown St. Louis – fills a space previously occupied by Casa Gallardo. It comes from siblings Seamus, Bill, Sean and Tim McGowan of McGowan Brothers Development. In addition to Rosalita’s, the McGowans own and operate Blondie’s, Lucas Park Grille, Flannery’s Pub and the Library Annex. Although the brothers moved to St. Louis in 1997, they grew up in Houston, and

Rosalita’s pays homage to the Tex-Mex style of food they enjoyed during their time in Texas. “Our downtown location has been extremely successful,” Tim McGowan says. “We’d like to branch out and do 10 to 12 more around the region in the next 10 to 12 years, very much like Casa Gallardo or Chevys did back in the day. This will be our beta test.” Clayton’s Castle Design led the renovation of the Des Peres space, which features 300 seats throughout a few separate dining areas, as well as an additional 158 seats on an expansive patio complete with a fireplace and its own bar. Indoor décor includes hanging star-shaped lanterns around the bar, indoor plants and festive draperies. Executive chef Jesse Mayer, who previously cooked at local restaurants including The Tavern and Lucas

By Mabel Suen Park Grille, oversees the menu. Top sellers include sizzling chicken fajitas served on a skillet with onions, peppers, guajillo chilis, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, cheese, flour tortillas, rice and beans – a great meal before seeing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat from STAGES St. Louis. The Des Peres location introduced more than 10 new items, including buttermilk-fried, sweet-tea-brined quail served atop bourbon-jalapeño creamed corn; shrimp diablo with spicy diablo-butter sauce served with creamy succotash and a puffed black-bean masa cake; and pepita-crusted salmon with butternut-squash hash, citrus guacamole and crispy pickled red onions. Unlike its downtown counterpart, the new Rosalita’s also will feature a Sunday brunch with a menu that includes a chicken-and-waffle sandwich,

From the full bar, tipplers can choose from a menu of specialty margaritas that includes five house margaritas, frozen blends, margarita towers for big groups and more. A large selection of tequilas features high-end varieties that can be incorporated into any drink or ordered neat. “We’re looking forward to being out here in the county, sharing our food with folks who haven’t made it downtown,” Tim McGowan concludes. “Des Peres was excellent to work with and couldn’t be a better partner. We’re excited to be a part of the community.”

Rosalita’s Cantina, 12796 Manchester Road, Des Peres,

‌Story:  Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice take a lighthearted look at the Old Testament story of Joseph, one of the 12 sons of Jacob, whose status as “favorite son” makes him a marked man with his jealous brothers. When Jacob gifts Joseph with a “coat of many colors,” his brothers have had enough. They sell the lad into slavery in Egypt, telling their father that dear Joseph has died. While working his way up the ladder of servitude, Joseph shows a penchant for interpreting dreams that eventually interests the pharaoh, Potiphar. Joseph’s prowess so impress him, in fact, that the pharaoh makes the lad his second in command. Years after sending him away for a life as an indentured servant, Joseph’s brothers, back home, hear of his good fortune while they suffer through a famine. They journey to Egypt and ask for mercy, which the benevolent Joseph shows them before being happily reunited with Jacob. Highlights:  First written in a shorter form by Lloyd Webber and Rice while they were college students, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat provides a snappy, snazzy paean to all manner of musical genres. Director/choreographer Stephen Bourneuf leads a STAGES St. Louis troupe that keeps the fun times rolling in a high-stepping, fast-moving rendition filled with infectious rhythm and an abundance of good cheer, to rousingly kick off STAGES’ 31st season. Other Info:  This second go-round for Joseph at STAGES (the first took place in 2008) delightfully combines song stylings and energetic dancing, courtesy of Bourneuf, who himself numbered among the original Broadway cast of Joseph in 1982. Propelling the musical is a snazzy, sensational performance by Kirsten Scott as the narrator. Joseph also features Brent Michael DiRoma doing a credible impression of Elvis (“the King” Presley, from the Tennessean Memphis, not the Lower Egyptian one) with both his acting and singing as the fun-loving pharaoh, who expects all his female admirers to swoon. Jeff Sears, as the genial Joseph, displays a beautiful voice, as well as the good humor required for the role, whether warbling ballads such as “Any Dream Will Do” or helping Potiphar decipher his sleepy stories in “Pharaoh’s Dream Explained.” Otherwise, Brad Frenette, as Levi, humorously leads the country-tinged “One More Angel in Heaven,” explaining the disappearance of Joseph to their father. Jeremiah Ginn as Reuben heads the droll French café number “Those Canaan Days,”

while Jason Eno’s deep voice belts out the appealing “Benjamin Calypso” number. Bourneuf’s immensely entertaining moves make maximum use of the Reim Theater stage, which Sean Savoie’s lighting design brilliantly illuminates. Costume designer Brad Musgrove dresses the players in amusing attire for the “Song of the King” number, as well as the flashy and totally delightful “Joseph Megamix” at the end, when the players showcase their individual talents. Mrs. Potiphar looks enticing, too, as Molly Tynes does her best impression of Mrs. Robinson (from The Graduate, the 1967 film classic, of course). Several amusing props fill James Wolk’s entertaining scenic design, including a camel for comic relief. The players synchronize flawlessly with Lisa CampbellAlbert’s musical direction, while Stuart Elmore’s orchestral design makes the most of Lloyd Webber’s foot-tapping, finger-snapping score. In short, there’s much to enjoy with nary a stumble in STAGES’ joyous, glorious salute to the pop-rock splendor of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The Wine Life WHAT I AM DRINKING NOW… By Stanley Browne

‌2014 ROBERT SINSKEY VINEYARDS, ABRAXAS – LOS CARNEROS, CALIFORNIA Grape: 43 percent Riesling, 29 percent Pinot Blanc, 17 percent Pinot Gris, 11 percent Gewürztraminer Owner/Winemaker: Robert Sinskey/ Jeff Virnig Aged: Stainless steel fermentation Approximate Retail Price: $26 TASTING NOTES: Color: Pale straw Aroma: Pear, honeysuckle, almond and white pepper Taste: Crisp upfront fruits with apple, lime and pineapple leading to a round mouthfeel and a dry finish with mineral and citrus notes

T

he name Abraxas appears in various ancient mystical contexts, and for the wine of the same name, Robert Sinskey Vineyards grows

four grape varietals in the single Scintilla Sonoma Vineyard. Those four varietals ripen differently, with the gewürztraminer harvested first, on or around Aug. 18, and the riesling last, on Sept. 9. Because so much can happen weather-wise during the course of picking those varietals, though, they demand close attention. Robert Sinskey moved from New York to help his father, who was retiring from medicine and had started growing grapes. His father believed lighter-bodied wines, such as pinot noirs, would be more popular, which led his passion for such wines to bloom. What began as his son helping at the winery turned into a 25-year obsession. He now owns more than 200 acres in Carneros (south of Napa/Sonoma, a cooler region) and the Stag’s Leap District. Sinskey and Jeff Virnig, Robert Sinskey Vineyards’ winemaker, believe the care of the land and soil to be most important to making good wines, so they started converting the

vineyards to organic with biodynamic whole farm practices dating back to 1991. They similarly believe in vineyard ecosystems using farm animals such as sheep to graze the grass between the vine rows and predatory birds to benefit the natural habitat. Because Sinskey seeks to make wines of character that pair well with food, unsurprisingly, he married Maria Helm, an acclaimed chef. She now oversees the winery’s culinary side, teaches classes and also has written a couple of cookbooks: The Vineyard Kitchen: Menus Inspired by the Seasons and Family Meals: Creating Traditions in the Kitchen. Food Pairings: This Abraxas blend pairs great with pork, sausages of all sorts, pickled foods, seafood, chicken and the ever-hard green vegetables and salads.

A ST. CHARLES CHARITAbLE PROJECT HOPES TO PUT THE HOmELESS FRONT AND CENTER IN THE bIG PICTURE.

“W

henever I tell friends, family or anyone who will listen that I work with homeless people, I get the same response: ‘There are no homeless people here,’” Pam Struckhoff says. Struckhoff, who serves as director of program services at St. Charles’ Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, knew better – and with a new four-month photographic project, that nonprofit is striving to document the abiding error of the response she cites. The project, “In Plain Sight – Homelessness Exposed,” launched in mid-April. In it, the nonprofit distributed 100 cameras to the same number of homeless citizens in Lincoln, St. Charles and Warren counties – its service area – to record their lives from day to day. Subsequently, with the cameras returned, eight judges chose 20 photos for public exhibition until Aug. 20 at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, starting next Thursday, June 29. From those 20 photos, visitors to the project’s website (inplainsight.live) can vote, by donation, on their favorites, with utilitarian, needs-based prizes going to the top shutterbugs. All 20, suitably framed, also will go on auction at a ticketed Aug. 19 event to fund Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service programs. Struckhoff relates a specific and quite telling inspiration for the project. “On an extremely hot day in July 2016, I drove into a gas station at a busy intersection of St. Charles,” she says. “I would say at least a thousand cars go by there a day, and there was a man sitting on the bench, not near the entrance, who looked tired and was sweating profusely. “I knew he was homeless because I had stopped by there many times before to talk to him and see how he was doing. When I shared that as an example to people – that I had seen him there – I would hear, ‘Really? I’ve never seen him.’ Yet there he was, every day of the week and weekends, because that’s where he could find work.” Karen Grant, director of development at the nonprofit, enthusiastically recounts the initial reaction to Struckhoff ’s inspiration. “When she proposed the idea, we envisioned the awareness it could bring to help those in need and knew we had to do it,” Grant says. “I think our executive director, Jack Lipin, thought it was a little crazy, but that’s exactly what the care service needed – something different to catch people’s attention, something to bring homelessness into view of different circles than those we usually frequent.” Struckhoff, meanwhile, provides more details about the project’s procedures. “The individuals who participated in the project were given disposable cameras, 27-frame count,” she says. “They were instructed to take pictures of their daily lives and asked to think about what they wanted people to know – people who know nothing about homelessness or who think they know but really don’t – about them and the issue of homelessness. “The majority of the individuals chosen were those we’ve been working with on the streets. … The homeless we work with come from all walks of life. Some had homes and money – and then the rug was pulled out from under them. Some have family and some have no one.” Grant expands somewhat on her colleague’s overview of the nonprofit’s good works.

“The care service has embraced the most vulnerable in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties since 1981 by providing assistance and building connections with the community to overcome the cycle of poverty,” she says. “We’re locally unique in our ability to address both short-term and long-term homelessness and hunger issues. The care service has seen countless families and individuals succeed at stabilizing their crisis situation and work their way to self-reliance.” Struckhoff notes specific metrics on homelessness that support the project, some of them from a yearly census of sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals mandated each January by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. “The care service has been working with those who are homeless or in crisis for over 36 years, and in April 2016, we began a street-outreach program which assisted in identifying over 120 unduplicated homeless men, women and children in our service area,” she says. “We also participate in the annual Point-in-Time Count, which in 2017 identified 578 persons who are homeless in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties.” Grant praises the counties’ communities for their assistance. “Thanks to the generous support of area businesses and individuals, as well as funding from local, state and federal government, the care service assists over 2,000 of the poorest households in our area each year, representing more than 6,000 individuals,” she says, adding “nearly half are children. … “In an area of the state that’s considered among the most affluent, there’s a grave misperception that homelessness and hunger don’t exist here. Sadly, there are close to 60,000 individuals going hungry in our tricounty area, one-third of whom are children, and the care service is a charity of last resort. Those who work, volunteer and support the care service can attest to the pain that poverty causes for so many of our residents. “And during the times when we have no funding to help, we simply have to turn people away. Nothing is more heartbreaking than to have to turn away a human being in need, let alone a child, because of the lack of funding or the capacity to serve them. “Yet that’s the reality we face.” Struckhoff provides specifics on how funds from the Aug. 19 auction will go to battling homelessness and hunger. “Proceeds will be used to deliver our programs and services to those we serve who are homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless,” she says. “Specifically, the funds will be used for things like rent, deposits and utility assistance to obtain and maintain housing as well as case management.” Grant says feedback on the photo project has so far been positive. “I don’t think people believe we should hide homelessness – I just think people aren’t aware that it’s there,” she notes. “We’re very fortunate to live in such a caring and generous part of the country. People often want to help, but perhaps don’t know how. I believe that if people know about the need and know how they can personally make a difference, they will. “So often, those in poverty don’t have a voice. As a community, we have to be their voice. This exhibit is a means of turning up the volume so people can hear.” Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, 4116 McClay Road, St. Charles, 636-441-1302, jacares.org
