EDITOR AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF UNIVERSITY CITY CHILDREN’S Center, Steve Zwolak says that when he started working with kids, it was like a chance to re-do childhood. Having grown up in a “tough neighborhood,” he brings a passion to his work that – along with the dedication of UCCC’s many teachers – infuses the school with love, laughter and learning. Meanwhile, artist Ted Collier left the commercial real estate business several years ago to follow his passion: painting. He and wife Katie (of Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria in Rock Hill) often worked long hours to make their dreams a reality, and their dedication is paying off in spades. The pair’s creativity inspires everyone they meet – from their restaurant patrons, to the clients who commission Collier’s work. As you go about your day, do you feel inspired? Are you passionate about what you do? If you are, you’re one of the lucky ones. If not, think about what you can do today to make your dreams come true. The first step might be a small, tentative one – but you’ll be closer than you were before.

The word around town The 2015 Sinquefield Cup is underway through Thu., Sept. 3, bringing 10 of the world’s most elite chess players to St. Louis. To celebrate, The Cup is offering The Checkmate Cupcake, a tasty concoction of dark chocolate cake and vanilla buttercream, with black and white sprinkles and a chess piece topper. The design marks the first time that The Cup has used 3-D printing technology in one of its creations. The Checkmate Cupcake will be available at the Central West End location through the tournament’s end.

Congratulations are in order for Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, director of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, who was recently named Director of the Year for mid-sized airports. The honor comes from Airport Revenue News, whose publisher Ramon Lo says, “Rhonda has led the airport through tornado damage and reductions in air service to the point where St. Louis is now poised to take the next step.” Hamm-Niebruegge will be presented with the award at the ARN 2016 Revenue Conference & Exhibition in Dallas.

Forest Park Forever has announced plans to construct eight new arrival markers at Forest Park’s entrances. Called for in the park’s 1995 master plan, the renovation will begin with a temporary mockup to be installed this fall at the Skinker/Wells/Clayton entrance this fall. This first installation will enable planners to assess the size and positioning of the entrances before moving forward with the full-scale plan. Forest Park Forever, a private nonprofit that supports the park, will raise the funds necessary for the improvements, which will continue in 2016.

Epworth Children & Family Services focus on wine connoisseurs.” The Epworth team built a dinner around great food, wine and a whole lot of fun. The concept was not only to ask wine enthusiasts to sponsor tables, but also to bring their own wine also. The wine is paired with food, and the evening takes off from there. “The first year, we sold 30 tables,” Hamacher says. “It appealed to wine connoisseurs more than I could’ve imagined.” For the past 12 years, the Hamachers and other board members at Epworth have continued to find more wine enthusiasts in an effort to directly benefit Epworth’s mission: “To help youth and families find strength, break through obstacles and build brighter futures.” Hamacher says the event has had the desired effect. “(The Wine Dinner and Auction) has allowed us to hire more therapists and case workers,” he says. “We’ve been able to work down our backlog of cases that need attention. It’s really supported the organization.” Last year, the event raised $369,000, and the goal is to raise even more this year. Hamacher also wants to bring back some of the event’s original wine captains. He says Epworth is always looking for new wine aficionados to serve as table captains during the dinner, since they contribute so much to the evening’s success. After dinner, the event will feature a silent and live auction as well as a wine auction, which Hamacher says attendees really enjoy.

After dinner, attendees can dance the night away. “This event is such a worthy cause, and it’s also fun,” Hamacher says. “At the end of the day, it’s about the children.”

ine makes all things possible,” as novelist George R. R. Martin once said. For Epworth Children & Family Services, a wine-filled night in November will help make bright futures possible for area children. The organization is hosting its annual Wine Dinner & Auction Sat., Nov. 21 at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. For more than a decade, the annual event has been a premier black-tie soirée, serving up the region’s best wine – all to benefit children with severe emotional and behavioral challenges caused by abuse or neglect. Through the years, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Epworth’s programming, which aims to break the cycle of abuse. Sam Hamacher, chair of Epworth’s development board, has been involved with the organization’s predecessor, Family Support Network, for about 14 years. He was president of the development board and his wife, Jill, served as secretary. They both believed in the organization’s mission of helping kids in the St. Louis region. In 2012, Family Support Network merged with Epworth and began tackling the backlog of cases that needed to be addressed. When it came to fundraising, the organization wanted to be anything but ordinary. “We tried to come up with an idea that wasn’t just another chicken dinner,” Hamacher says. “We decided to

A CHEF’S KITCHEN

By Robyn Dexter

W

hen a young couple moved into their Ladue home, they called on Kim Taylor of K Taylor Design Group to remodel the 1980s-style kitchen. They wanted to expand it to accommodate the lady of the house, who was in culinary school. First, Taylor and the homeowners decided to take out some walls, and install tile that resembles hardwood floors. “They wanted a casual kitchen that was updated and stylish,” Taylor says. “We went with a rustic but modern look.” The custom cabinets, crafted by Centorbi Cabinets, have two depths, 12 inches and 24 inches, to, as Taylor says, “make it interesting.” Hidden cabinetry and a refrigerated drawer add more space and convenience. “It’s very relaxed and has a nice atmosphere,” Taylor says. We accessorized, based on what the clients already have,” Taylor says. “We even displayed dishes they got as wedding gifts.” The appliances came from AUTCOhome, the quartzite countertops were purchased from Stone Fabricators. John Richter of Innovative Remodeling also worked on the project.

A Q&A session with Resito Pecson By Brittany Nay

O

riginality is ingrained into Resito Pecson. In 2001, the creative interior and floral designer opened twigs & MOSS, offering dried, preserved and artificial floral arrangements. Today at his Clayton home décor shop, Pecson goes to great lengths to produce statement pieces for the homes and businesses of some of the city’s most discerning clients. Did you always want to be a designer? In high school, I wanted to be an architect. In college, I wanted to be in advertising. In real life, I became a buyer for regional and national retailers, eventually opening my own store – twigs & MOSS – which has proven to be, without a doubt, my dream job. What drew you to the design industry? As a buyer in categories that included electronics, sporting goods and bedding, I always enjoyed product development. It didn’t matter if it was developing a full line of private-label bikes for a discounter, or designing a luxury bedding collection for a department store, I relished the opportunities. I enjoy every step of the design process.

What is a normal day at twigs & MOSS like? All-consuming. I think that’s the way it is when you’re doing something you love. How have you seen the design industry change during your career? How and how often most people are exposed to design has changed. When I opened twigs & MOSS, magazines were what most people looked to for design direction – once a month. Now, with social media, it’s design on-demand – anytime, anywhere. From where do you take design inspiration? My own surroundings. I try to surround myself with what I love and enjoy. It keeps me inspired. Although my design aesthetic is certainly influenced by what I see, I try to never copy. I respect those who make and create. Tell us about some of your most high-profile projects. I have been fortunate to have a few. For example, this fall and holiday season, I’m very excited to design the windows of Soft Surroundings’ flagship store at The Boulevard. What has been your favorite design project? The store itself, in general, from the display windows in front, the product selection and merchandising inside, to the design of our advertising. It’s been a non-stop project, but it continues to be a favorite. Tell us about your favorite design piece at home. I use my home as a design lab of sorts. So, you probably have seen or will see my favorites in twigs & MOSS eventually. The twig spheres with lights began at home as a holiday decoration. For years, I’ve been covering the front of my home with giant black spiders for Halloween – twigs & MOSS will sell giant black spiders this fall. I try to fill the shop with some of my favorite things.

By Nancy Robinson

T

he life of an artist typically isn’t an easy one, which is why so many choose to pursue their art as an avocation rather than a vocation. But St. Louis painter Ted Collier is one of the lucky ones: He married a creative and the daughter of an artist, who has encouraged him to pursue his dreams. When Collier first met his future wife, Katie Lee, in 2011, he was working in the commercial real estate business. “I was successful and enjoyed it, but it wasn’t my passion,” says the 1992 Ladue Horton Watkins graduate. “Katie encouraged me to pursue a professional career as an artist.” At the same time that Katie was encouraging him, Collier was instrumental in helping Katie realize her own dream, which was to open an Italian-inspired restaurant, inspired by her time in Italy with her mother, St. Louis artist Belinda Lee. “I went out and raised the money so we could open a restaurant together,” Collier recalls. “I was painting and creating driftwood sculptures and having popup shows to help make ends meet, while Katie was waiting tables at her Dad’s restaurant, Katie’s Pizzeria on Clayton Road. Some days I would meet with private investors in the morning, and paint and sculpt at night. Such great memories! We made it work and had a lot of fun.” Fast forward to the present. Katie is happily ensconced in the restaurant of her dreams – the 3,000-square-foot Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria on

Manchester Road in Rock Hill, which opened in 2013 and now employs some 50 people. Collier is also living his dream, working full time on both his art and at the restaurant, in which he is an owner and equal partner. Despite the demands of the restaurant, Collier spends anywhere from four to 15 hours a day painting in his studio. His favorite medium by far is acrylic on canvas, and his preferred style is abstract, although he says he “also paints the occasional figurative piece.” In fact, though, Collier is versatile and able to work in many different styles, which is fortunate, since he is easily bored. “If I had to liken my painting style to one artist, it would have to be Gerhard Richter, who I admire immensely and who also moves from style to style,” he says. “The one core fascination throughout my work seems to be with how lines, shapes and color interact and create different feelings and reactions from the viewer. People ask me why I title so few of my pieces, and I always tell them that I don’t want to influence or bias someone else’s interpretation.” Although Collier doesn’t have a trademark style per se, there is an element that appears

throughout his body of work. “The one thing I revisit frequently is the circle or what some call ‘the donut,’” he says. “People seem to love them, and I can never keep them in stock.” Collier finds inspiration for his paintings just about everywhere, but is especially inspired when fishing for smallmouth bass on a river in Bourbon, Missouri, or fly fishing a tiny stream in Colorado for wild trout. “There are so many colors and patterns in nature that provide the ultimate in pure inspiration,” he says. He also is inspired by his private clients, who commission special pieces for their home or business. At the start of the process, he always visits with the client on-site to see the space in which his art will be hung, as it influences his direction in terms of style and color palette. “So far, it’s been an absolute joy to design and paint commissions for my clients,” Collier says. “I feel like I’m the luckiest guy in the world to be able to do this professionally with such success. There’s nothing in the world that makes me happier than people enjoying and appreciating my work.” Well, almost nothing. What makes him happiest is Katie, not surprisingly. “We work really well together,” Collier observes. “We understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and stay

out of each other’s way, allowing the other person to do what they’re good at. We trust each other and love each other very much.” And as it turns out, the restaurant business they share has become yet another creative outlet for Collier, who crafted much of the furniture, built the bar, and also the patio, which features an herb and vegetable garden. In addition, his paintings line the walls of the restaurant, along with those of other local artists, including his mother-in-law Belinda Lee, Julie Malone and Jeremy Rabus. Collier’s current work can also be seen at TedCollierArt.com and in private showings at his studio, which is located next door to ArtMart on Hanley Road. The building, which is owned by ArtMart owner Keith Baizer, is an artist co-op of sorts and houses the studios of St. Louis artists Howard Jones, Ahzad Bogosian, William Neukomm, Donya Allison, Dan Broadfield and Firmin Puricelli. “One of my favorite aspects of St. Louis right now has to be the creative renaissance that the city is enjoying – the vibrant fine art, the music scene and also the culinary upswing of amazing restaurants,” Collier says. “I’m a proud Saint Louisan to the core.”

FALL POOLS & GARDENS: Feature Story WESTPORT POOLS

Before You Close FOR THE SEASON By Robyn Dexter

S

ummer is drawing to a close, taking pool season along with it. So as you go about your pool-closing routine, keep the professionals in mind. At Westport Pools, professionalism and experience are top priorities. The company holds its employees to high standards and doesn’t let just anybody into a client’s backyard to work on a pool. Vice president Wayne George and vice president of business development Dave White note that Westport employees have the level of expertise to work on any project. “The technicians who work on complicated aquatics and water parks are the same ones who will perform services on residential backyard pools,” George says. “With their vast knowledge, they can provide benefits to homeowners on how to manage their pool, electric costs and chemicals.” Westport Pools has been a part of the St. Louis community since 1967 and has stood the test of time. “We have many people who have stayed with us for years and years,” George says. “We don’t turn people over very often.

We try to keep the same techs with the same clients, so they see a familiar face every summer when they open their pool.” George brings attention to the personalized service that makes Westport what it is today. “It’s a matter of trust,” he says. “Some long-term customers, who have been with us for years and years, will allow us to try new technology on their pools, and we can do that because of the relationships we build. We have knowledge here that can’t be matched.” Things have changed dramatically in the pool industry since Westport’s early days. George and White say the industry is much more professional now, with employees being fully trained and having their work be their career, not just a summer job. As summer winds down, there are a few things pool owners should keep in mind. First, George and White recommend hiring a professional company to close your pool for the year. “We can understand people opening

their own pools, but if you miss something when you close it, over the course of winter, the pool pipes could freeze, break and cause costly damage,” George says. “It’s well worth the investment to have the professionals do it.” With a professional company, clients also have recourse should something go wrong. “You want to have accountability from a reputable company,” George says. “It shouldn’t just be a guy with a pickup truck and a skimmer.” The company also recommends keeping an eye on your pool in the winter, noting that even though it’s closed for the season, damage can still occur in a variety of ways. Keeping a list of things to be done to the pool next season while you’re closing it can be a huge help because that leaves time to get bids on repairs and changes. “We have year-round techs who can do the work,” White says. “Most good pool companies are very busy in May, but there are plenty of things you can do (to maintain your pool) throughout the fall and winter.”

DAVID HOLTON

VICKI HOLTON

By Amanda Dahl

Driven by a desire to match luxury and comfort with a demanding schedule, Shannon and JJ Wilson designed a unique apparel line built around creative individuals who are constantly on the move. Shannon, the wife of lululemon’s founder, Chip Wilson, and JJ, his son, dressed up closet staples in rich fabrics to create an effortlessly sexy look. But the real genius behind their designs is the invention of Technical Cashmere, a dreamy, soft material that can actually be thrown in the wash at home. Introducing Kit + Ace, a Canadian-based company poised to take the world (and St. Louis) by storm. Tell us about the design philosophy of Kit + Ace. JJ: We design with a full-contact lifestyle in mind. We know your time is precious, so we took that into consideration when we designed our Technical Cashmere to be machine-washable. You won’t have to go home and change halfway through your day because your shirt has stretched out, or because you don’t feel appropriately dressed for all the commitments that take you from morning to night. How does Kit + Ace continue to innovate in the fashion industry? Shannon: Our proprietary fabrics are constantly being tested and improved. We take into consideration movement, durability, aesthetic and how luxury can be synonymous with innovation. We also are in constant pursuit of new revolutionary fabrications – like washable silk. How is Kit + Ace settling into the St. Louis market? JJ: The response has been positive – people are genuinely excited and curious about the brand. We continue to have authentic conversations with locals, and engage with the neighborhood through our hyper-local pieces, Supper Club invites, and other creative initiatives in each regional market. When looking for a central location in the U.S., what made St. Louis stand out to you? JJ: Our real estate team carefully considers each location to ensure it’s a fit for our brand. St. Louis has the right elements with its vibrant creative hubs, distinctive neighborhoods and locals who are engaged in the growth of their city – we design for them. The Central West End carries such rich history, balanced with an exciting energy, that drew us in. In addition, we found the locals to be warm and welcoming. As a brand that values time spent with the creative class, having that connection with locals in market is paramount. Where did the name Kit + Ace come from? Shannon: Kit and Ace are our muses. They are fictional characters with traits of individuals that we design experiences for, with the belief that time is precious. Ultimately, they embody attributes of the creative class – people who are driven by the impact they have on the world around them. They lead full-contact lives and need clothing that keeps up. In reality, we believe that our product can be admired and appreciated by anyone in search of effortless, versatile luxury.

Light Wai Ming’s Structured Style By Denise Kruse | Photos by Idris + Tony, courtesy of Wai Ming

E

mily Brady Koplar of contemporary, upscale fashion house Wai Ming has been hard at work on her spring 2016 collection. With an easy laugh and infectious enthusiasm in her voice, she casually tells us she’s “doing a little bit of everything.” The 35-year-old St. Louis native splits her time, seemingly seamlessly, between her St. Louis headquarters and New York City, where her production and fabric suppliers are based. With dual hats as Wai Ming’s chief executive officer and head

designer, Koplar is an undisputed up-and-coming power player in the fashion industry. Koplar’s designs have been spotted on Olympian Lindsey Vonn, who picked up some Wai Ming pieces at a trunk show in Vail, Colorado. Vonn wore a beautiful, flowing floor-length Wai Ming Serena gown to a gala held at Wimbledon. Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson also has been spotted wearing a subtly sexy Wai Ming Annabelle jumper. Most recently, when Koplar’s friend, fellow St. Louis native and Hollywood favorite Ellie Kemper started her summer stint as a host on the TODAY Show, she contacted Koplar for wardrobe recommendations. “I just sent her a bunch of stuff,” says Koplar, who was rewarded with a very unexpected designer shout-out from Kemper on the air. Fashion and design interest was honed in Koplar’s subconscious from an early age. “I was always drawing clothing,” she recalls. “I started sewing when

my parents got me a sewing machine for Christmas. I ended up making all my prom dresses. I went to a private school that had a dress code, so I made clothes for school.” Koplar’s parents have supported her passion from day one, putting her through art camps and encouraging her along the way. Small business owners themselves (Koplar’s parents, Paul and Lim King Brady, own a commercial wholesale greenhouse based in Florida), they showed Koplar the hard work and business-savvy required in entrepreneurship. “I feel really lucky,” she says. “They’re very amazing parents.” Koplar attended Boston University to complete a bachelor’s degree in economics, concentrating her studies - and her job prospects - on the merchandising and buying side of the fashion business, until one of her old bosses pulled her aside and told her, “Don’t do this. You won’t be happy.” Initially, she resisted, the responsibility of her student loans weighing heavily on

her, but Koplar’s boss recognized her overwhelming potential and pushed back, telling her, “this is your chance.” So she jumped. After an internship at Ralph Lauren in Paris, Koplar enrolled in New York’s Parsons School of Design’s rigorous design program. Upon graduation, she joined the ranks of Parsons’ star-studded alumni, including Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan. She went on to further develop her craft at Vivienne Tam, The May Company and Aéropostale, before launching her Wai Ming line in spring 2012. The name Wai Ming, meaning “gift of light” in Chinese, comes from Koplar’s given middle name. The decision to name her company in tribute of her ethnically mixed heritage is fitting for the designer, who identifies closely with both her mother’s Chinese culture and her father’s Irish heritage. “I really appreciate a very different upbringing,” she says, crediting her mom not only with weaving Chinese

celebrations with traditional American holidays, but for instilling her with a work ethic that makes the American Dream possible. “She works like nobody else I’ve ever seen,” Koplar says. As “gift of light” might imply, Koplar’s Wai Ming designs are known for their light and airy quality. Graphic lines found in architecture and artwork around the world inspires her designs. “Being out gets my creative juices flowing,” she says. “Whether looking at vintage stuff, traveling, whatever my eye settles on – even signs and fonts. I get a lot of inspiration from my parents’ greenhouse.” For fall and winter 2015, Wai Ming is still very graphically and architecturally inspired, with a lot of leather and leather trims. Leather meets an unlikely partner this fall and winter with pleated chiffon resting breezily under a leather bodice dress. The entire collection is inspired by terrazzo prints and angular lines, with Koplar’s classy-sexy balance that

has become an aesthetic staple. Koplar looks up to many designers in the fashion world, but Christopher Bailey sticks out as a role model. “He’s working as chief executive officer and head designer, and I don’t think anyone else at that level, at such a prominent and successful company, has done that,” she says. As someone who is juggling the chief executive officer and head designer responsibilities herself, it’s nice to see that it can be done. She has a solid support system in place to help make that happen, too. Along with her parents, her brother is a great resource for business questions and decision-making, and her husband, Bob Koplar of St. Louis-based World Events Productions, is also very creatively minded. Wai Ming clothing can be found in various boutiques in Colorado and along the West Coast. In St. Louis, Ladue’s Ivy Hill boutique, which is owned by a former high school classmate of Koplar’s from MICDS, carries the line.

Chesterfield Physician Delivers A Recipe For Weight Loss

Dr. Bryan Deloney, Chesterfield, is bringing one of the newest advancements in natural health and healing to local residents. Deloney is helping patients reverse health challenges, such as excess weight, diabetes, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders fibromyalgia and autoimmune issues, using the NutriMost Resonant Frequency Technology (NRF).

NRF technology takes a hormonal fingerprint to determine the exact blueprint a person needs to follow to bring their body into an optimal state of fat burning and health. First, patients undergo a fast, painless scan of their body’s cells by using the comprehensive electro-impedance resonant frequency (NRF) technology. This allows Dr. Deloney to take a “hormonal fingerprint” of every factor that affects weight gain, including fat burning, fat storage, metabolism, the organs involved, hormones, neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, metals, toxins, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, candida, parasites and nanobacteria. It gives him the capability of measuring and assisting the body’s innate healing abilities. NRF technology is so advanced and specific it can determine hormone imbalances, organ function weakness, and much more.

Deloney explains, “we determine your personal recipe for healthy weight and healing using resonant frequencies”. When the cells of your body are exposed to “pollen” or “bacteria”, the exposed cells elicit a cellular response. Everything in life has a resonant frequency (vibrational frequency, how the molecules vibrate)…including pollen, bacteria, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. If your cells are exposed to the resonant frequency of pollen, without the presence of pollen, your cells will have the same response as if they were exposed to the pollen itself.

Everyone Gains Weight Differently Due to Hormones NRF technology can target your hormone imbalances and get to the cause of your weight gain, overcoming weight loss resistance and solving your weight challenges. Using this understanding of resonant frequencies, Dr. Deloney can determine precisely what the body needs to bring it into its optimal fat burning zone and keep it there. This is done by measuring the baseline of each factor being measured (hormone, neurotransmitter, heavy metal, bacteria, virus, organ, etc.), and then the doctor can determine what supplement or formula is needed by observing what the effect of that item is on the baseline (whether it makes it more coherent or less coherent). The program displays the results as a circle with red and green dots around it. From here, it identifies the biomarkers (vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, toxins, microbes, etc.) that are out of range regarding the fat

burning zone. Once the out-of-range fat biomarkers are identified, the program will determine exactly what is needed to bring the biomarkers back into fat burning. It will identify what is needed nutritionally; but more than that, the foundation of the whole program is the ability to determine the exact “recipe” for each person’s fat burning. The program creates a “recipe” for hormones/neurotransmitters, a “recipe” for detox and a “recipe” for the fat burning formula.

Let the Balancing and Healing Begin Once in this balance state and fat burning zone: • You experience no hunger or cravings, unlike other weight loss programs • The typical fat loss is between ½ pound and 2 pounds of fat per day • You will have more energy, better sleep, and you will be in a better mood • Your hormones will become more and more balanced • You will enter a state of autophagy, which helps the body overcome all sorts of health challenges The NutriMost Ultimate Fat Loss System is safe, fast, and effective. You’ll clear out harmful toxins and balance your hormones as you lose fat at an unbelievable pace. Typical results see patients losing 20 – 40 pounds in 40 days. And the best part? The results are permanent. Following your 40 days of fat loss, NutriMost will reset your metabolism and weight set point, so you can keep the weight off for good. This safe, doctor-supervised system works in just 6 weeks, guaranteed.

salty sea breeze, the rhythmic lapping of ocean waves against the shoreline, and the feeling of sand between your toes is difficult to capture when living in the middle of our vast country. Yet the active beach attitude and leisurely lifestyle can be replicated with the coastal fashions found here in the Midwest at Fun in the Sun. Shop owners Nancy and Dan McGee understand all too well the deep desire to live near a beach and embrace the relaxed attitude of those peaceful surroundings. Yet, turning that dream into a reality could seem unrealistic, if it meant uprooting the entire family. So, the couple adapted their goal of opening up a beach-side boutique by opting to bring the ocean-side style back with them from vacation. At Fun in the Sun, the McGees’ recipe for success is to offer brands not found in the middle of the

country. “Coastal fashion makes sense here in St. Louis because people buy these items on vacation,” Nancy says. “The novelty of bringing these fun, hard-to-find brands to the Midwest appeals to everyone.” The pieces are particularly popular with

high-school and college students, she notes. The cheerful colors, combined with a refined style, are reflected in all the brands carried at Fun in the Sun, including Vineyard Vines, Southern Marsh and Johnnie-O. “The great thing about our fashions is their ability to transition well in the fall, even with our roller-coaster weather,” Nancy explains. She describes the easyto-layer items, such as the quarter zip pullovers and vests, as perfect for the change in seasons. With two locations, one in Kirkwood and another in Chesterfield, and exclusive brands for the St. Louis area, Fun in the Sun is the best way to soak up the vacation lifestyle and apply it to everyday life.

xecutives and senior leadership are looking for ways to stay on top. Others, meanwhile, are seeking a path to that pinnacle. In pursuit of these goals, many forget one of the most significant attributes that lead to success: character. Character is a true indicator of who will be, and who will remain, a successful leader. Leaders with character rise to the occasion and take the lead in making the right decisions, particularly during a challenge. Frequently, we refrain from conversing about a leader’s personal attributes unless a major transition occurs. Today’s leaders are faced with greater expectations to succeed under rapid, often unpredictable, changes. It is at times like this that character rises. Character pushes aside the title and checkbook to expeditiously do what is

needed and right. Individuals will often give their best personal and professional performance and go beyond the status quo for a leader who has earned their respect, respect that has been built on the leader’s character. Four thoughts to consider about character: Nobody wins unless everybody wins. Success can create opposition. Assess the opposition. See past it for the ultimate good and seek alternatives. Character looks up from the bottom. Vision and direction become clearer. The aftermath of success is duplicitous. Stay on focus. Work to serve. Expedite the mission. C. t’s summer. For a bit longer, it’s still summer. And while school schedules have shortened the season to barely two months, there’s no denying the change in attitude that summer brings. My kitchen is closed: That’s right, closed. It’s light until late. The schedule is flexible, and my ambitious to-do list gets moved from a drawer in my desk to under a magnet on the fridge. (Really, moving the list should be one of the things on the list, then I could at least check something off.) School obligations are nearly non-existent. Other than turning in the kids’ medical forms – which are something akin to what I imagine would-be astronauts applying for NASA programs fill out – there is nothing to do. That is, until this time of year hits, and I realize something we all seem to have forgotten: summer reading. First of all, let me just applaud MICDS and John Burroughs School. The summer reading lists for all of my kids are fantastic, a well-thought-out mix of classics, modern fiction and cutting edge contemporary works. Really, I want to reread most of the lists myself. I’m sure my children would agree, had they bothered to scan the

list or even known of this mythical list’s existence. Well, that’s not completely fair; Punch went through his list thoroughly in order to pick out the three shortest books. Fortunately, they are pretty good choices. Whiny found the only three nonfiction books on the list, because, according to him, made-up stories are a “waste of time.” Reassuring words to his mother, who dedicates most of her non-parenting time to ‘making up stories.’ Cranky is a bit easier. She’s a senior this year, but perhaps more importantly, she’s a sunbather. The summer reading book is both a relaxing pastime by the pool, and a convenient sunshade as well as an effective coaster and bug swatter. So we spend the last half of August plowing through books. And let’s face it. If my kids were avid, responsible readers, the books, long finished, also would be long forgotten. Yeah, that’s it. Reading the books now keeps them fresh in their minds. It’s really better – no, intentional – that’s it, intentional that they put off summer reading until that last minute. That’s my (made up) story and I’m sticking to it.

SHRIMP AND SPICED PEACHES WITH GRILLED CORN PICO Serves two Ingredients: 2 ears corn on the cob 1 small tomato, diced ½ small onion, minced and divided juice from 1 lemon 5 sprigs cilantro, chopped salt and freshly ground pepper to taste ½ lb. medium shrimp (about 16) 1 garlic clove, thinly sliced 1 peach, cut into wedges 1/8 tsp dried chile flakes Preparation Preheat your grill. Cut the end of the corn at the base of the cob, then carefully remove the corn from the husk without breaking the leaves. Reserve the husk. Remove the silk and discard. Grill the corn on an open grill for 9 minutes, turning every 3 minutes. Cut the corn from the cob and place in a bowl. Stir in the diced tomatoes, half of the minced onion, lemon juice and

cilantro and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the tails from the shrimp and place in a bowl. Add garlic and remaining onion, peach wedges and chile flakes. Mix thoroughly. Steve Zwolak and University City Children’s Center By Connie Mitchell | Photos by Sarah Conard

M

ost people who know him now wouldn’t guess that Steve Zwolak, the executive director of the University City Children’s Center (UCCC), grew up on the streets of Philadelphia. The white-whiskered sage – who seems to love playing as much as the youngsters who attend the UCCC – is an expert on early childhood education, and his research-based approach is making a difference in the lives of thousands of children. In fact, Zwolak says his introduction to the world of early childhood education was a revelation: It felt like a chance to re-do childhood,” he says. A college athlete who was set on a career as a secondary school physical education teacher and coach in the late 1960s, Zwolak took a class on early childhood education that ended up changing the course of his profession. “At the end of the semester, I only got a C for the class, but I stayed in the field, and it was truly a love affair,” he says. “I grew up in a really tough neighborhood, and we lived in the land of ‘have-nots.’ That was my world…There’s research out there that teachers teach who they are, and they get into early childhood to heal themselves, very much like social workers. I realized that this was really deep in my soul.” Zwolak’s love affair with early childhood education may have been a healing device for him, but it has also been a boon to all of his subsequent students. He now credits himself with knowing two things very well: how to teach children

and how to coach basketball. He has scaled back his coaching to a seven-week fall basketball training program for students through eighth grade, but he says the discipline of sports translates to the classroom in many ways. “There’s nothing different in what I’m doing in basketball, in the classroom or running a school; it’s all the same,” Zwolak says. He’s transferred some of the visualization techniques he uses to help basketball players improve their game to the classroom to help teachers understand that a number of strategies may be needed, depending on how the other players - in this case, students - react and move around the field of play. Zwolak’s approach to early childhood education is based on much more than sports, however. He developed his classroom techniques through the decades and incorporated both per-sonal experience and information gleaned from a huge field of observational research and quantifiable brain studies. “What I have learned is that children need an emotional partner,” he says. “We have evidence now that if we just teach kids numbers and letters, it’s not enough. I believe that if we help children develop an emotional partnership with teachers and parents, that emotional partnership will enable a child to take social risks because they know they have somebody to fall back on who will protect them. When kids feel confident, then academic learning and understanding become easier because they know they have an emotional partner, and that as they navigate the social world, they can feel secure and start taking those risks.” Zwolak notes that many schools place little or no emphasis on emotional development, despite the fact that “there are volumes of theory around emotional development that teachers need to understand.” The vast majority of emotional development occurs in early childhood, by age 5, he adds. The classrooms at UCCC may at first look similar to those at other early childhood centers, “but the intentionality of teachers is different,” Zwolak says. “Children are coming into schools with ‘angry love.’ The only way they know how to get love is through anger.” That angry love is caused by fractured attachments and children mirroring behaviors they see in the adult world around them. That’s not to imply that only children from disadvantaged or low-income backgrounds exhibit these behaviors, he adds. There are degrees of angry love that span the student body at UCCC, which is one of the most diverse in the area, both racially and socioeconomically. To help more teachers become familiar with the classroom techniques that support emotional and subsequent social and intellectual development, Zwolak developed the LUME Institute, a professional development program for early childhood teachers, which he now directs. The program shares the values, philosophy and methodologies of UCCC and is gaining national attention. Through UCCC and the LUME Institute, Zwolak is teaching early childhood educators to meet angry love with “ruthless compassion.” “We’re talking about some really tough kids,” he says. Ruthless compassion translates to open-ended questions, conversations and relational inter-actions with children. The result is the emotional connection Zwolak champions, which helps improve classroom management and sets kids on a more successful path as they enter elementary school. Zwolak is so passionate that he chokes up slightly when he describes “the joy of seeing teachers with selfconfidence and self-understanding. Then I know that the 10 children in their classroom are going to be heard. That’s so important - to know that children will have a different kind of chance at a different world.”

his June was one of the wettest months on record in St. Louis. Unfortunately for many homeowners, the soppy weather wasn’t limited to the outdoors, as the saturated ground led to leakage in their basements. “June was our second-busiest month on record,” says Dave Thompson of Woods Basement Systems. “With spring typically being wetter than any other time of year, the ground was already inundated with a lot of moisture, so when the record June rainfall came, the water had nowhere to go. Any weak area you had in the basement sprung a leak, so to speak.” And for those who didn’t experience moisture problems, it’s not time to breathe a sigh of relief yet, Thompson continues. “The danger, especially when finishing your basement, is that people think, ‘If my basement survived this, it will survive anything.’ While that’s reasonable and very logical, in our 29-year history, these things can cause foundations to shift, so that the next time there’s a wet season, the basement will leak.

By Lisa de los Reyes

Don’t fall into a false sense of security that because it stayed dry now, it’s always going to stay dry.” Woods Basement Systems offers 27 patented products specifically designed for basements and crawl spaces, including services for both repair and prevention of water damage, Thompson says. “If you finish your basement, you can put tens of thousands of dollars into the basement, and you don’t want it to get wet, even once,” he says. “We don’t charge for a basement inspection or to give a proposal for improvements. So if you are looking to finish the basement, make sure the foundation is solid first, and that you’re not going to have any future leaks.” A finished basement can add substantial livable square footage to a home, increasing its value and providing added enjoyment for homeowners, Thompson notes. In addition to the popular trend of ‘man caves,’ families also are finishing their basements to provide extra entertaining space or a theater room, he says. For

SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH?

families looking to add such a space in their home, he recommends working with a company that specializes in basements. “You’ve got to be mindful of the code,” he says. “There are a lot of new codes for basement improvements that we’re knowledgeable about.” He adds that Woods Basement System specialists can recommend products for high-quality insulation and sound-proofing, as well as help optimize acoustics. Woods Basement Systems also recently began offering the PolyLEVEL System, a concrete-leveling product that can be used in applications like driveways, porches, patios and swimming pools. “It’s a new product line that our existing customers are loving, because they like and trust us; and now, we can provide this extra service for them,” Thompson says.

Dinner ...

Feraro’s Jersey Style Pizza T he Carondelet neighborhood is one of the city’s most picturesque enclaves, but it sometimes gets lost in the shadow cast by other, more well-traveled areas. It’s an imminently walkable hamlet, full of quaint homes, stunning architecture and friendly residents, along with an inviting town square of sorts with benches and a soothing fountain. It’s also a choice location to indulge in a quality bite. There are several small taverns and delis around the way, as well as burger haven Stacked STL, a stellar choice for those looking for that delicious combo of meat and bun. For those in the know, there’s also some mighty fine pizza to be had in the form of Feraro’s Jersey Style Pizza, one of

60

LadueNews.com | AUGUST 28, 2015

two locations around town (the other resides in South County) run by New Jersey-born mother-and-son partners Nancy and Jon Feraro. Feraro’s is a neighborhood place in the very best sense of the term. Bustling bar, huge booths, comforting foods in abundance and a definite lack of pretense. Drop in, grab some eats and maybe a beer or two, no big whoop. Feraro’s menu boasts all sorts of favorites, from strombolies and calzones to a wide selection of sandwiches like cheesesteaks and Taylor hams (a Jersey favorite featuring rolled pork), to multiple variations on classic spaghetti to cannolis. But the signature items are the pizzas, featuring scratch-made dough. There are several DIY options

for those looking to customize their pie, including a 10-inch personal-size pizza. You can even nosh on cheese pizza by the slice. Then, there are the so-called Giant Pizza Specials, with Jersey-centric names like The Boss and Old Blue Eyes. Monstrous affairs, these hearty creations guarantee leftovers to all but the most ravenous of diners. Of course, we heeded their clarion call. The pizza of the day for us was the Soprano ($28). Loaded with pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatballs, ham and bacon, it’s a meat-lover’s dream. The highlight of this pie is the house-made meatballs, savory and spicy just like nonna used to make. Of course, the crust is on the thin side, which makes each slice easily foldable, in keeping with East Coast tradition.

For an accompaniment, try a House Salad ($6, small or $7, large). This is the classic combo of fresh lettuce, squiggly Provel, juicy tomatoes and house balsamic dressing (golden Italian, ranch, bleu cheese, French and honey Dijon also can be had) that we’ve all come to know and love in the Lou. Wash it all down with a couple of bottles of frosty Busch for less than three bucks apiece. Street parking is fairly abundant in this quarter, so if you’re headed to a night of dining and then some fine theater at the Ivory, you only have to find one spot, then just perambulate the rest of the evening.

ln

traveling theatrical troupe makes a stop in Mule Shoe, Texas, an outpost for trickery and shenanigans in the Wild West of the 19th century. A member of the troupe, intrepid thespian Harry Thunder, has avoided seeing his dear old dad, Colonel Thunder of the Seventh Cavalry, since young Harry was kicked out of West Point. Now, unbeknownst to each other, they’ve both arrived in Mule Shoe, home of the colonel’s lovely niece, Kate Thunder. Harry’s pal, Jack Rover, is a ladies’ man who is impersonating Harry. Kate is thunderstruck, so to speak, by the dashing charmer Jack, a.k.a. Harry, and quickly falls in love with him. This is good for Jack, since Kate is heir to her late father’s sprawling ranch and fortune. That inheritance has caught the treacherous eye of Ephraim, the local preacher, who lusts after Kate’s money, as well as Kate herself. Another town villain, land-owner Ike Gammon, is intent on getting his hands on as much property in the territory as he can, legally or otherwise. His fetching daughter, Jane, strikes up a fancy for Harry, while his slow-witted son, Sim, just seems overwhelmed by life. Will Harry and the colonel reconcile with the help of the colonel’s trusty Irish Indian guide Crow? Will the colonel find out more about his own life, including the woman he loved and lost? Will Kate get her man Harry, or rather Jack, or fall victim to the wily clutches of Ike Gammon and Ephraim? Shudders! Highlights: In 1984, playwright James McLure updated John O’Keefe’s 18th-century Restoration work into a 20th-century comedy with a 19th-century melodrama setting that St. Louis Shakespeare has made into an amusing and infectious 21st-century production. With stiff upper lips and coy double entendres referencing other areas of the human anatomy, Wild Oats is a rip-roarin’, gun-totin’, back-of-hand-to-theforehead, wily adventure that plays out deliciously behind the red velvet curtains adorning the Ivory Theatre stage. Director Shaun Sheley and company chew up McLure’s delectably tasty dialogue for two hours of opry shenanigans filled with humor and rib-ticklin’ good times. Other Info: St. Louis Shakespeare excels at farce and comic exaggeration and is at its best when presenting unusual, rarely performed theatrical gems. That’s the case with McLure’s engaging adaptation of O’Keefe’s enduring Restoration play that pits good-guy underdogs against nefarious establishment types. Placing the story in the Old West invites a melodramatic interpretation that Sheley and his frolicsome cast seize for the enjoyment of their audience. While the pacing occasionally lags, Sheley’s performers keep the entertainment engine generally purring with a finely tuned octane of comic fuel. Look no further than Nicole Angeli for an example of engaging

By Mark Bretz

comedy. Her delivery of Kate’s snappy dialogue, as well as her palate of varied facial expressions, set a high mark for this silly, saucy rendition. Michael Pierce is lots o’ fun as the foppish but determined Harry, looking conspicuous in his bananahued suit on the dusty streets of Mule Shoe but inspired in his pursuit of the lovely Jane, the latter played amusingly by Ashley Bauman. Anthony Winninger revels in his role as the greedy Ike Gammon, who tramples tenants but can’t control his own offspring, and Chuck Winning brings a smile as Ike’s easily confused son Sim. John Wolbers is priceless as Crow, the Indian guide with the thick Irish brogue and red wig who knows about the colonel’s checkered past, at least part of it, while John Foughty gets the best lines (“She’s so ugly she could make a freight train take a dirt road”) as Col. Thunder and delivers them with his best Yosemite Sam impression. Erik Kuhn is a delight as the dashing and devotedto-the-ladies Jack Rover, who turns admirable after falling for the appealing Kate Thunder, and Christopher LaBanca is a hoot as the lecherous, licentious preacher Ephraim. Jamie Eros is a right proper Amelia, who plays a big part in the story’s coincidences, while Wolbers pairs with Brian Rolf as a pair of horse opera impresarios of dubious nature. Brandon Riley and Hannah Pauluhn finely fill out the ensemble. The cast helps the audience know whether to cheer or boo with deftly hoisted placards from either side of the stage, but you’ll know when to laugh easily enough with this good-hearted romp of a yarn. T

his is a good example of how great Merlot tastes from a warm climate – flashy and opulent. Miner Family Winery is a family-owned winery along the eastern hills of the Oakville Appellation in Napa Valley. Founded in 1998 by Emily

and Dave Miner along with his parents, Ed and Norma. In 2013, winemaker Gary Brookman, a former Joseph Phelps alum, passed the torch to his assistant, Stacy Vogel, so that he could take over as general manager overseeing all aspects of the winery. Stagecoach Vineyard was an ambitious vineyard development. Planted around enormous rocks and boulders atop the eastern hills of Napa Valley some 1,500 feet above the valley floor, the winery excavated more than 1 billion pounds of basalt, andesite and tufa boulders to create this remarkable property. Many famous wineries have sourced fruit from the vineyard that produce bold, age-worthy wines from its famous red, rocky, volcanic soils, including Caymus Vineyards, Duckhorn Vineyards, Pahlmeyer, Paul Hobbs Winery, Plump Jack Winery and Quintessa. Merlot originates from France’s Bordeaux region, where it’s one of the five most widely planted grapes along with

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Merlot is a good blending grape because of its softer tannins. It thrives in many climates and is grown in wine-growing regions across the world. Warm regions produce Merlot with big, lush, berry-forward flavors and silky tannins, while cooler regions yield Merlots with higher acidity and elegant structure. It has large berries and is thinner-skinned, and ripens about two weeks before Cabernet Sauvignon. Pairings: Merlot generally is lower in tannins and will pair with many foods, such as pot roast, prime rib, steak; full-flavored cheeses like aged Gouda, bleu cheese; chicken with a rich sauce; duck; grilled or roasted lamb; pork; grilled mushrooms; or veal chops. It’s a great food wine. Certified Sommelier Stanley Browne is the owner of Robust Wine Bar in Webster Groves and Downtown at the MX.

WINE EXCELLENCE! “Firestone Vineyard Central Coast Riesling is a blend of 85% Riesling and 15% Gewurztraminer.. The combination of grapes bring flavors of green apple, lemon and mandarin with the right amount of sweetness and acidity. Perfect paired with spicy Thai or Chinese food. Boony Doon Vineyard The Heart Has Its Rieslings from San Benito and Monterey County in California has nice fruit flavor and plenty of acidity to offset the sweetness. I will be brief. The good news is there are plenty of great action movies at the Cineplex at the moment. If you want to see some stuff blow up and white knuckle car chases and pin-you-to-you-seat explosions, go see Man from U.N.C.L.E. or Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. It seems this half-baked film only uses explosions to shield us from the plot holes. Agent 47 (Rupert Friend) is a genetically engineered killing machine. Can you guess how many times they tried before to perfect him? When a large, evil corporation wants to capture 47 and use the science to create an army of unstoppable killers, the agent must join forces with a mysterious woman to try and stop the master plan. Cue evil laugh. The late Paul Walker was originally slated in the title role, with Friend stepping in admirably to replace him. I don’t know if the pall of Walker’s untimely death took the wind out of the production sails, or if this was always just a mediocre project. In any event, it’s not often that I check my phone during action scenes in the hopes that the bright lights of the explosions will dull the glare of my screen, but it didn’t take long for me to give up on this one. It’s a 5.

PREVIEW: GRANDMA

Generation Gap Coming soon to theaters is this acerbic road trip comedy about an unexpected encounter between a misanthropic grandmother (Lily Tomlin) and her estranged granddaughter (Julia Garner). If you haven’t caught Lily Tomlin’s current small screen venture, Grace and Frankie, a sitcom about two women divorced from gay men, it’s currently playing on Netflix and is worth a watch. Tomlin’s big screen performance here also looks promising. Ellie Reed (Tomlin), is a difficult woman dealing with her own personal drama when her granddaughter, Sage, appears on her doorstep. Sage is pregnant and in need of $600. Fast. Together, the two women head out, banging on doors, collecting old debts and borrowing money from anyone who will lend it. It won’t surprise you to learn the two do a little bonding in the process and discover they are more alike than they realized. Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden stars as Sage’s mother and Ellie’s daughter, Judy. The film also features Sam Elliot and Judy Greer, but as you can imagine it is mainly a two-actor piece. The film is an R-rated comedy and has a running time of 80 minutes.

REGIONAL ARTS COMMISSION’S FELICIA SHAW

Sharing St. Louis’

Magic

S

t. Louis native Felicia Shaw called California home for almost four decades. While she considered it a great place to live, it wasn’t her hometown. Earlier this year, an opportunity arose that brought her back to her beloved St. Louis. As the Regional Arts Commission’s (RAC) new executive director, Shaw’s aim is to impact the local arts scene by propelling St. Louis’ art scene to the next level. Shaw’s background is in the arts, specifically arts administration. She worked for 12 years as a program manager for the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, and for the past seven years as the director of the arts program at the San Diego Foundation. That position was eliminated last year, and she found herself looking for a new direction, which brought her back to St. Louis. Shaw says last year’s events in Ferguson further influenced her decision to move home. “I want to make a new imprint in the hearts and minds of people so we highlight what’s really working (in St. Louis) and what’s good here,” she says. “We can use arts as a tool to make St. Louis a safer and more vibrant place to live.” Shaw has high praise for the local arts and culture community, and since assuming RAC’s executive director position in May, she’s been working to further expand St. Louis’ reputation as an artistically creative region. “As a city, we’re highly ranked for sports,” she says. “But when I think about the

66

AUGUST 28, 2015 | LadueNews.com

vibrancy of our arts culture, St. Louis should be ranked much higher in that area, too.” St. Louis is an arts town, Shaw says, with a deeply ingrained and mature community of artists and art enthusiasts. “One of the things I missed the most when I was in San Diego was The Muny,” she says. “We tried to have a similar concept in San Diego, but it didn’t work out. St. Louis is special. The Muny provides magical nights under the stars all summer long.” Shaw is proud to be leading RAC and looks forward to moving the organization and all of its branches forward. “The legacy of RAC is so strong,” she says. “This isn’t a turnaround situation, because (RAC) is already doing such a great job. I’m not here to fix anything – I’m here to take it to the next level.” One of the first orders of business for Shaw as executive director was to dedicate time to go out and listen to citizens in the community. She and her team devised a series of dialogues in which they invited a handful of people to come and tell them about the trends and issues impacting the region. “We fund 250 organizations,” she says. “Obviously, we can’t sit down with all of them individually to hear their comments and concerns, but this was a good way to hear what’s going on.” For Shaw, the current St. Louis art scene is exciting. “Artists themselves are evolving,” she explains. “They’re looking at their work as a small business.” This is good for the city as it moves out

of the recession and focuses on the entrepreneurial economy, she says, noting that in St. Louis, artists can live more affordably, do cutting-edge work and position themselves as micro-enterprises. “Artistic practice is changing,” Shaw says. “Artists aren’t going the traditional route. They’re busting out of their framework altogether and taking their art to the streets.” She notes how the Ferguson unrest has changed art in St. Louis for the better. “Artists’ responses to Ferguson really helped people connect with their feelings,” she says. “They’re working in the traditional sense, but also working with social justice.” Luckily, the people of St. Louis “accept the arts as a part of their daily lives.” Shaw notes that in San Diego, things like going to the theater or visiting a gallery were generally done for a special occasion. Here, “it’s a way of life.” The approach to the arts in St. Louis is democratic, Shaw says, because there is access for everyone. “People don’t realize that a lot of the things we have for free here cost a lot in other cities,” she says. “The investment was made many years ago that arts and culture are important to our wellbeing in St. Louis.” Moving forward, Shaw sees her role as promoting and marketing the St. Louis arts culture in the best way RAC can. “There’s so much happening here,” she says. “I’m hoping we can reposition St. Louis as a world-class destination for the arts.”

helming the kitchen, favorite menu items range from spaghetti with meatballs and bruschetta to lasagna, rabbit and chicken spiedini. Even the house salad is a special treat, Ervin says. “Our balsamic vinaigrette is to die for!” While new lunch and dinner menus are in the works, Ervin says popular classics will always be offered. And if diners have a craving for a custom creation, Ervin says the restaurant can make it happen. “We take great pride in preparing dishes that are not on the menu, and accommodating any and all requests we are able to. We love making memories for guests.” Business these days is brisk, particularly on weekends and holidays, with tour groups, out-of-towners and, of course, lots of regulars. For groups, Mama’s offers a beautiful banquet room for parties up to 100, complete with private restrooms, a private bar, fireplace and separate entrance. The banquet menu boasts a variety of entrées, such as canneloni, eggplant parmigiano and pollo marsala, with spumoni ice cream or cannolis for dessert. “We love doing family-style dinners,” Ervin says. “It reminds us a lot of growing up and passing the food to one another,” she says. “Mama’s has an authentic atmosphere, as well as authentic home-cooked food. You feel like you’re at my home.” Mama’s also offers wine dinners, culinary classes and catering services. During wine dinners, chef Astarita creates the perfect pairings of Italian wines with five courses including appetizers, entrées and desserts. The wine dinners, as well as the culinary classes, can be held at the restaurant or brought to your home for holiday

parties, birthdays, graduations, retirement celebrations and more, according to Ervin. “Our classes can be handson, where you create awesome dishes with us,” she says. “Or you can have a demonstration class, where we come and show you how to do everything, and provide the recipes to take home.” Mama’s also caters events of any size, from simple bag lunches to elaborate sit-down meals. The catering menu includes ala carte items and lunch or Italian buffets for 15 or more guests. “We can provide food from our menus or create something [for you],” Ervin notes. Authentic Italian cuisine and superior service are the legendary restaurant’s important ingredients to success. “Mama’s dining experience is unique because we truly care about our guests, and try to provide the authentic service we all used to give and receive,” Ervin says. “We want our guests to leave looking forward to their next visit.”

ndrea Ervin’s Italian upbringing on The Hill was filled with family meals of homemade pasta and pastries. So, it was only fitting that she cut her teeth working at several Italian restaurants in the neighborhood before venturing out on her own. In 2005, Ervin and her husband, Lance, purchased Mama Campisi’s, one of the staples of the close-knit Italian neighborhood since the 1940s. The couple reopened the storied establishment, calling it Mama Campisi’s, Mama’s on The Hill, in February 2006. Originally known as Oldani’s Restaurant, it’s said to be the birthplace of a St. Louis classic – toasted ravioli. “Toasted ravioli was created by a chef named Fritz, who enjoyed his vino while cooking,” Ervin says. One evening, while some regulars were sitting at the bar, it’s said that Fritz threw ravioli into hot grease instead of hot water. “Aggravated with what he had done, he took the ravioli out to the guests and told them to enjoy,” Ervin says. “Well, that they did! The guests could not have been happier with the accident, and started coming in regularly requesting it.” The Ervins are passionate about providing authentic Italian cuisine and keeping the establishment’s rich tradition alive – toasted ravioli and all. “When we purchased Mama’s, it was very important to keep the name,” Ervin notes. “So many people had such wonderful meals, and enjoyed seeing Mama. We wanted to keep what she had started.” With chef Antonino Astarita from Sorrento, Italy,

Throughout the years that my family and I have participated in all the different community service initiatives, we have seen its growth and its ability to achieve many different goals we set around the city. It became increasingly clear that in order to support all the different projects, a fundraising aspect must be included. The fashion show is a unique way to combine the traditions of the ball, and the mission of the order. CHARITIES & NONPROFITS: Feature Story RANKEN JORDAN PEDIATRIC BRIDGE HOSPITAL

A Kid’s Best Friend By Brittany Nay

hey say a dog is a man’s best friend—and it seems the same goes for kids. “There’s just that bond between kids and dogs, and that unconditional love you see. When you see a little puppy lying in a child’s lap, it’s really special. And kids just light up when they get to see their own dog,” says Lauri Tanner, president and CEO of Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital. That bond between kids and dogs sparked the hospital’s junior board to launch the fundraiser, Kids Dog Walk. Through the years, the event has grown to hundreds of attendees, with Tanner, her staff and patients, as well as community participants, all walking their dogs together for a good cause. “It’s really fun and high-energy,” she says. This year’s walk will include the first-ever 5K Fun Run, as well as a carnival setting, complete with a silent auction, raffle and contests, from a dog-owner look-alike contest to the best-dressed dog. Another new highlight will be the agility feats of local trainer John Casey’s canines. Tanner’s Australian Shepherds also will be on hand—6-year-old Jack, and 18-month-old puppy,

Remy. And the Animal Protective Association will bring dogs for young patients to walk. ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL

WHAT/WHEN/WHERE: THE ST. JUDE WALK/RUN TO END CHILDHOOD CANCER SAT., SEPT. 26, 2015, 8 A.M., BALLPARK VILLAGE This family-friendly event, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, features food, music, mascots and cheerleaders, and children’s activities. MISSION

The battle against cancer is a constant one. However, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital wields a mighty weapon against cancer through the ongoing research efforts of its world-renowned doctors and scientists, who are constantly exploring new ways to protect children from the ever-adaptive foe. “The advances made at St. Jude are helping to save children everywhere,” says Nicole Stuke, regional director of American Lebanese Syrian Associate Charities (ALSAC) and St. Jude.

HISTORY

COMMUNITY IMPACT

St. Jude developed out of a heartfelt prayer that changed a man’s life. The entertainer Danny Thomas, best known for his starring role in the sitcom Make Room for Daddy, credits a pivotal life change to St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes. During his days as a “starving artist,” Thomas reached out to St. Jude through prayer, promising to pay homage to the saint for answering his pleas. Shortly thereafter, the success he dreamed of became a wild reality. As his star of fame skyrocketed, Thomas remembered that fateful day and kept his promise to the saint by building St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, with two goals in mind: to fund research initiatives that could eliminate cancer for children, and to ensure families had a place to bring their sick children without worry of cost. With his wife, Rose Marie, Thomas set out to make the shrine a reality and garnered support. Thomas, who was of Lebanese descent, reached out to the Arab-American community, and ALSAC was soon formed with a sole purpose of raising the funds needed for the hospital. Through countless supporters and generous donations, St. Jude achieved both goals.

Between clinical trials and innovative research to laboratory developments that translate into fresh treatment options, St. Jude always strives to improve children’s odds of living longer lives. The groundbreaking discoveries by the hospital’s doctors and scientists do not stay behind closed doors. “St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, so every child saved at St. Jude means that doctors worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children,” Stuke says. The hospital has extended its reach not only through shared information, though. Affiliate clinics reside in places like Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Charlotte, North Carolina. The St. Jude International Outreach Program also has a shared mission to increase the number of survivors at a world-wide level, and does so through shared resources in 17 countries. “Treatments invented at St. Jude have aided in raising the childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to 80 percent since it opened in 1962. But the work is not done,” Stuke explains. Donors help fuel the groundbreaking research and treatment that brings us closer to the day our founder, Danny Thomas, dreamed of the day when no child dies in the dawn of life.”

ON THE BOARD: JOYCE ABOUSSIE “St. Jude has been interwoven in the fabric of my life, and is a big part of my DNA,” says Joyce Aboussie, the president and owner of Aboussie & Associates. Her father met Danny Thomas during his fundraising days for the building of St. Jude. “Danny asked for help, and my father agreed to join the cause. Today, I am humbled by the opportunity to serve in my current leadership role as a member of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital National Board of Directors and Governors.” Much like her father, Aboussie recognizes the valuable research efforts happening at St. Jude, and feels impassioned to share the hospital’s mission, while recognizing all that it has accomplished to this point. “St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is important to this community – and every community – because children from all 50 states and around the world are treated there free of charge,” Aboussie says. “And by sharing discoveries made, St. Jude saves thousands more children.” The upcoming St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer reflects the hospital’s commitment to allowing families to seek care for their children free of charge. From the overarching goal of ridding the world of childhood cancer to each personal success story of a child who came to St. Jude, the research hospital has stayed true to its founder’s mission. As Aboussie says, “Every child deserves the same chance at life.” And St. Jude continues to make that a reality for many children worldwide.
