Editor When I first had the opportunity to sign up for a foreign language in middle school, I knew exactly what language I wanted to study: French. At the time, all I wanted to do was have a baguette swordfight with my friends in front of the Eiffel Tower. Looking back, this might not have been the best reason to learn a language, but there you have it. As I began my studies and continued through the years, though, I fell in love with the language and the country. To this day, I have dreamed of traveling to France – specifically Paris, the City of Light – to explore the glorious architecture, enjoy the delectable delights and have a new adventure. Although such a trip isn’t in my foreseeable future, this week’s Arts & Culture feature did a wonderful job of helping me, and hopefully you, visualize a cozy cruise through French canals and countryside. Starting on p. 76, LN contributing writer Susan Manlin Katzman describes traveling via the Horizon II barge, including the sites – and of course the divine meals – she experienced along the way. Elsewhere in this week’s edition, we feature Jessie Miller of Jessie D. Miller Interior Design in our Abode section. Starting on p. 37, LN contributing writer Julia Cain shares the inspiration behind Miller’s intricate designs. Her work makes me swoon and certainly inspires me to revamp my abode. All the best,

Giving Children a W
atching a child grow brings parents indescribable joy. Parenting is never easy, though, and when your child struggles to communicate their wants and needs verbally, it can be difficult to distinguish if they are simply encountering some challenges with speech or if they need help with a speech disorder. “Early intervention is most important,” Sheri Mistretta, executive director of Walker Scottish Rite Clinic at Maryville University, explains. “If you diagnose and treat early, before secondary conditions and behaviors arrive, it’s a smaller [issue]. Just like anything else in life, the earlier you get at it, the faster you can get it resolved.” The Clinic devotes itself to improving speech for children at an early age. “We treat children, ages 2 through 6, who present with a variety of articulation and language concerns,” speech and language pathologist Ellie Richter says. “[They might] say certain things or have a list of words they know. We teach them how to speak using speech sounds and how to communicate with the people around them. We work with the children’s parents, and/or teachers as necessary, to tailor their therapy towards their

age, social and academic expectations.” Families are often referred to Walker Scottish Rite Clinic, where a screening appointment is first set up to determine if further evaluation is needed. Formal and informal screening tools are used to look at the child’s articulation and language skills. “We were introduced to Walker Scottish Rite through Mercy Hospital,” Mario Guerrero says. “It [had been] really hard to find a therapist [who was] qualified in both Spanish and English for our daughter, Kamila. The fact that she’s learning two languages is harder.” Richter began seeing Kamila when she enrolled in the KidTalk Spanish program. “Kamila originally came to the Clinic and wasn’t talking very much,” Richter describes. “She’s been with us a year now, and [at age 4], her long-term prognosis is good. She’s made significant progress in both languages [and is] increasing her confidence.” Kamila’s transformation over the course of a year has proven remarkable. “Her mom and I are able to understand her better,” Guerrero says of his daughter’s progress. “She has better social skills with her friends. Before, she was able to say only one or two words. Now, she’s able to talk in complete sentences.”

Therapists are all Hanen certified, focusing on parent interaction through crossover education at home. “We want [these children] to be fully integrated and [we] teach skills needed to participate in the real world,” Richter says. The Walker Scottish Rite Clinic continues to find ways of expanding to better serve the community’s children. The charity organization bridges the gap between state-funded programs, which require severe symptoms for qualification, and children with possible delays. “Free services are a critical part [of the Clinic] because speech language therapy can be cost-prohibitive and often isn’t [fully] covered by health insurance,” Mistretta says. “We literally saw and served 777 children last year alone. We’ve already served hundreds this year, with 106 children on the waiting list – and that’s heartbreaking. If we could triple our manpower, we could do so much more.” Walker Scottish Rite Clinic at Maryville University, 650 Maryville University Drive, St. Louis, 314-529-9200, srclinic.org
on Sat., nov. 12, kidtalk celebration introduces the mission of Walker Scottish rite clinic in a festive environment at Majorette in Maplewood. this year’s theme promises to amaze while incorporating opportunities for you to learn about and support the important work done at the clinic and throughout the community. “the kidtalk celebration is going to be ‘spectacular! Spectacular!’ a fabulous vaudevillian circus feel,” Mistretta says. “We absolutely believe in wining and dining folks to make it an experiential evening. they’ll get to hear all about the services we provide – and they’re going to have an unforgettable evening while they are at it.” For More inForMation, contact Mona Monteleone at 314-529-6619 or MMonteleone@Maryville.edU.

Photos and story by David Anderson
he Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis (WLA) celebrated its 40th anniversary with a gala on Sept. 10. The Honorable Jane Kelly – of the federal court of appeals, as well as president of the National Association of Women Lawyers – highlighted the rich history of WLA and the strides made toward gender equality since 1976. Kristine Bridges, recipient of the President’s Award, emphasized the importance of finding a female mentor. WLA’s newly installed president, Bridget Hoy, remarked that the theme “Forty and Forward” honors WLA’s history but looks to the future as well. Jordan Unfried, Jessica Powers

n Sept. 16, Mission: St. Louis hosted its ninth annual Night for the Town Gala at Ballpark Village. More than 530 people attended the event, the organization’s largest to date. Rich McClure and Sharon BuchananMcClure co-chaired it alongside Kyle and Valerie Hubbard. Steve Lipstein, the president and CEO of BJC HealthCare, served as keynote speaker. Mission: St. Louis seeks to restore St. Louis by empowering people to transform their neighborhoods. It fights poverty here through an approach built on relationships and empowerment, not charity. It believes this approach has a deep, lasting impact. Focusing on education and employment, its organizers aid people in gaining skills and resources to transform first their own lives, then their families and neighborhoods. Valerie and Kyle Hubbard

Everyone here is committed to the good of St. Louis. We all have seen and been affected by the brokenness that has existed in our city for generations. We know there is beauty and value in all people, and the power of relationships is the key to seeing our city healed of deep hurt. Because we love our city, we are called to action. oyola Academy guests recently were invited to indulge in a feast prepared by four of St. Louis’ finest chefs. Each chef began with an appetizer station and then collaborated in preparing a four-course meal. Everyone enjoyed spending the evening wining and dining in support of the academy’s efforts to break the cycle of poverty through education. Loyola Academy is a St. Louis Jesuit middle school for boys who have the potential for college preparatory work, but whose progress may be impeded by economic or social circumstances. The academy’s community conducts a challenging program that supports families in preparing each student to achieve his full human potential. In the Ignatian tradition, the academy inspires its students to lives of service and leadership through the use of their God-given talents. Faith Barnes

hen Allie was diagnosed with autism at 4 years old, she was nonverbal, was not potty trained and had such bad sensory issues that she couldn’t even brush her teeth. She didn’t interact with her siblings or play the way most children do with toys. Through a caseworker, Allie’s mom, Gabrielle Wilhelm, learned of Sunnyhill. Allie’s been working with Sunnyhill’s Behavioral Analysis Services for nearly two years, and her mom says she’s seen so much progress. “Allie is a completely different child,” Wilhelm says. “She’s grown so much since Sunnyhill started working
with us. Before, she wasn’t brushing her teeth and would scream. Now, she’ll want to go in the bathroom and do it herself. She’s starting to make decisions on her own.” Sunnyhill models behaviors that are appropriate for Allie and has taught her family how to redirect her and assist her when she has a sensory meltdown. Allie is now counting, talking, interacting with her siblings and is potty trained. “[Sunnyhill] has helped our whole family, not just Allie,” Wilhelm says. “I can’t imagine our lives without them. We had no idea what to do. We’re so grateful.” As for the future, Wilhelm knows Allie will continue
to improve and learn. “We have hope for her for the future that she’ll continue to grow. That’s our ultimate goal – give her the best life possible,” she says. To continue to help kids like Allie and other individuals, Sunnyhill is hosting a fundraiser called Sippin for Sunnyhill from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Anheuser-Busch Biergarten. The evening will consist of an open bar with more than 30 beers, appetizers, a liquor raffle, a silent auction and the Sunnyhill Grand Prix Hot Wheel Race. she had such an eye for details I loved designing this space incorporating all her loves. It’s a kitchen where the feel is fresh and comfortable yet everywhere you look there is a special detail that has her signature on it. The aged brass hardware naturally fit and provided the perfect contrast to the white cabinetry. Converting a window into a door, we were able to create access to the outdoor patio making entertaining a breeze.

From leisurely horseback riding to competitive polo matches and thoroughbred racing, St. Louisans love equestrian sports. But even for those of us who don’t participate beyond the occasional horse-drawn carriage ride or tuning in to watch the last few minutes of the Kentucky Derby, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the equestrian arts. A few suggestions: a handpainted hunt scene by one of St. Louis’ top fine artists, a stirrup-handled cocktail table and an equestrian-style serving tray for derby-day entertaining.

FRENCH-INSPIRED FEMME This “bachelorette pad”, located in University City, received touches of parisian glam from Miller.
St. Louis-based reality-television star Jessie Miller shares her latest projects.
L
ocal designer Jessie Miller was introduced to some 1.5 million viewers during her run on the television series HGTV Star in 2013. Since her reality-TV stint, Miller – the designer and owner of St. Louis-based Jessie D. Miller Interior Design and the woman behind the blog The Design Daredevil – has been keeping busy with primarily new construction or large-scale renovations, she says. “I’ve learned a lot more about the business and vendors and trades and how to source from what is right for the client,” says Miller of her time since she appeared on TV. “I find the client’s personality and the house’s personality, and create a style out of that.” Viewers might recall that Miller – raised in St. Paul, Missouri, and a graduate of Fort Zumwalt North High School – had a luxe eye for design and glam approach to spaces, both of which have seemingly strengthened with time. And she continues to receive ample attention for it: She was named among Rue Magazine’s Top 7 Young Designers to Watch last year, and her blog has received recognition from the St. Louis Blog Awards. With so many large projects, Miller has been able to work with a plethora of styles and room types. Her favorite? The dining room. “It’s usually the most glamorous room in a house, mainly used at night by adults, so it gets to be moody and hopefully a bit sexy,” she says. Sexy is a word that comes up a lot when talking about Miller’s design style, and the designer notes it as the first term to describe her aesthetic, followed immediately by soulful and unapologetically glamorous. “I’m constantly thinking in terms of juxtaposition – blending classics with contemporaries, masculine with feminine, the tension of light and dark and the balancing act of high with low,” Miller remarks. She references music, fashion and art when talking about influences, noting “inspiration can be found anywhere when you truly have a passion for your work.”
Miller refers to herself as her own worst client, adding a playful “ugh.” She explains: “My home is constantly changing and not nearly as well thought out as my projects. I prefer to live in an all-black-and-white environment, but I challenged myself and just painted it carnation pink. Everyone seems to love it, although MODERN APARTMENT This University City apartment I’m still getting adjusted. My office is was made into a “modern and sexy space,” Miller says, in my home, so I literally never escape with new lighting, furniture and paint. work – good thing I love what I do!” Currently that work involves a new project Miller is particularly excited about: an expansive ranch in Edwardsville, Illinois. She explains that when the project is done, the 15,000-square-foot ranch will feature an indoor shooting range. But how can her glam approach translate into a rustic building? “Living glamorous to me doesn’t mean a particular aesthetic or a certain material, mainly just living in a well-curated space that has been thought through and injected with style that reflects the people who live there,” Miller says. “No matter the style, I believe in having candles lit, fresh flowers and tons of coffee-table books that show interests of my clients. I believe in eating dinner at a table with music playing instead of on the sofa in front of the TV. And I believe in keeping a well-stocked bar for any impromptu celebration.” thedesigndaredevil.com

With their bright, fun pattern and cheeky connection to cartoon royalty, it seems Lilly Pulitzerpatterned Mickey Mouse ears would describe St. Louisan Holly O’Bert’s personal style best. O’Bert is the woman behind the popular Instagram account @pinkpreppymom, which often highlights her colorful sense of fashion. “My style is really about bright colors, especially pink,” O’Bert says, her fuchsia-filled closet proving her point. “Bright colors make me happy and seem to make others smile as well. I like clothing with a personality.” Here in St. Louis, she notes Pink Magnolia as her favorite store – “I love all things Lilly!” – and Kate Spade and Vineyard Vines as other top picks. “I am often described as bubbly, and I feel my fashion reflects that. I prefer to wear a dress whenever I can – I am kind of oldfashioned. In that regard, I also like a vintage cut, and that is why I like Kate Spade: colors and vintage.” This autumn, she says she’ll stick with jeans and cashmere sweaters, but admits she doesn’t buy too much autumn apparel since she’s more focused on brightcolored attire. With much of St. Louis longing for layers,

O’Bert says she loves spring and summer apparel. O’Bert, originally from the city of St. Louis proper and now residing in Town and Country, explains she recently stepped away from her photography business after the birth of her daughter. Instead, this mother of two launched a lifestyle blog after developing her loyal Instagram following. O’Bert’s new blog features a heavy Disney theme, and is charmingly titled Bippity Boppity Blog, a loose tribute to the song “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” from that studio’s classic 1950 Cinderella. “Of course, I love Disney as much as bright clothes,” she says, noting those Lilly Pulitzer-patterned mouse ears. “The wonderful thing about being at Disney is that everyone can step out of the box and wear whatever makes them happy, and others will compliment them on their unique take.” Items like Disney Dooney & Bourke accessories and Minnie Mouse monograms, all seen on O’Bert’s popular Instagram page, show her preppy style and Mouseketeer nature are not mutually exclusive. “As you can imagine, finding time to stay fashionable
with a new baby in the house – and a 5-year-old – isn’t easy, but it’s just a part of my personality and who I am, so it has to happen most days of the week to keep me being me,” O’Bert says. One look at her social media shows she seems to juggle things just fine. Bold patterns and bright colors fill the stylish and popular photos, and a few Mickey Mouse heads even make an appearance. “Of course, mouse ears are the ultimate accessory, but hard to pull off in St. Louis!”

A St. Louis jewelry designer’s work is as bold as brass.
O
ften, inspiration comes from unlikely places – an interminable, crowded train ride is where author J.K. Rowling famously came up with the idea for Harry Potter – and for 25-year-old Shayba Diaz Muhammad, founder and designer of Mahnal Jewelry, her line of elegant handcrafted brass women’s jewelry was born of a childhood spent delicately handling her grandmother’s heavy brass vases and animal paperweights. Although the bridge between heavy brass tchotchkes and a geometrically inspired, graceful single-wire brass choker might seem murky at best, the timelessness and cultural history behind the metal were essential to Muhammad’s choice in establishing her line. “I fell in love with its depth, durability and character,” she says. “And when I discovered its use for jewelry in African and Native American cultures, I knew brass was it.” Mahnal Jewelry features a line of brass necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings, each piece handmade by Muhammad in her home studio in the St. Louis area. Muhammad always has her eyes peeled for design inspiration. “I’m constantly keeping notes on different things that inspire me: mostly things that capture mood, but also interesting shapes and textures I see in architecture, garments or plants,” she says. “When I’m ready to design a new collection, I go back to those notes.” Muhammad’s educational background is in fashion design – she was in an accelerated-degree program at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design and also was working as an accessory specialist when she first tried her hand at metalwork. “I saw a lot of [jewelry] and thought, ‘Hey, I could make that!’” Muhammad says. When she did craft her own jewelry, friends and family began to ask for custom pieces, which gave her even more opportunity to fine-tune her craft. After deciding to take a break from her intensive program and return to her hometown of St. Louis, she launched her brand in 2013, named after an Arabic word associated with attainment, achievement and success. “I knew these were attributes I wanted women to feel,” Muhammad says. “I’ve always believed what we wear is a form
of communication. It expresses something about who we are: that achievement starts with a healthy selflove. I want the jewelry we adorn ourselves with to be a token, a wearable reminder of that.” To create her pieces, Muhammad takes raw brass wire and sheets and carefully measures and cuts them for the specific purpose of each, after which she takes hammers of various sizes to add texture to the pieces or build dimensional shape. An inflexible metal, brass requires heat – a lot of heat – to be formed into a wearable accessory, so Muhammad uses a small torch to soften the metal to work with, applying heat and bending the piece until it reaches its final shape. Additional parts of each piece, if necessary, are soldered together, and the final product is washed in a mild acid bath and polished to a high shine. The finished design is a durable, timeless, minimalistic statement piece, meant to accentuate a woman’s natural elegance. Each piece not only is uniquely handcrafted but also will develop its own identity over time: Oxidation and exposure to the wearer’s body chemistry will cause the jewelry to develop a patina – a shift in color at the metal’s surface – as it ages. “I like to say it creates a ‘living finish,’” Muhammad says. She adds, “The beauty of brass is that, like sterling silver, you can always choose to let it patina or take a polishing cloth and restore its original brightness.” What began as the curious exploration of a possibility has turned Muhammad into a maker and entrepreneur. “Jewelry was one of those things that was supposed to be an experiment – but it stuck for me,” she says. “I only wish I had discovered jewelrymaking sooner.” Mahnal Jewelry plans to hold its official grand-opening online launch in late October. The shop will partner with various bloggers to host giveaways and special discounts and limitedinventory pieces. Details for the launch can be found on Facebook (@mahnaljewelry) and Instagram (@mahnal). The jewelry will be available online at Decovo and Mahnal’s website (after the launch), as well as Urban Matter boutique in the St. Louis area.

ild Heart Boutique in Edwardsville, Illinois, has been open for only a few weeks, but it’s already being warmly received by the Metro East and St. Louis region. The boutique offers a product line that’s West Coast-influenced, with everything from casualwear to cocktail dresses. Founder and owner Brooke Lynch graduated from high school in Bethalto, Illinois, and moved to Los Angeles to go to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She got as much as she could out of LA and the Fashion Institute before moving back to the Midwest to figure out her next venture. She ended up working for her father in sales, but knew she wanted to get back to fashion. “I moved back out to LA and met this woman who convinced me I needed to open my own store,” she says. “I was discouraged from that idea over the years

because it can be hard to make it, but she taught me tricks and skills to be successful at what I love.” Since her whole family is from Edwardsville, Lynch opted to open up shop there. “It’s a great location in a growing community,” she says. “It all kind of fell into place.” On Sept. 2, the boutique opened up off state Route 157. Since then, Lynch says everything has been going well. “The feedback has been really positive,” Lynch says. “I had one woman tell me that women in this area are hungry for a place like this. I was also told my prices are extremely affordable for the quality I’m offering.” Visitors to Wild Heart have ranged in age from 18 to 80, Lynch notes. “I don’t really think style has an age on it,” she says. “You can look beautiful at any age.” Wild Heart offers casualwear, business casual, cocktail dress rentals, plus sizes, shoes, handbags,

accessories, jewelry and more. Lynch says she’s had a lot of visitors in the store looking for something to wear to a wedding – a huge market in the Midwest. Offering a dress rental service has been a draw for customers, too. Lynch describes the style of the boutique as “a little different from Midwest boutiques,” since her style is very driven from the West Coast. She says it pairs dressy with casual. Lynch also works with her customers to put outfits together if they need guidance. “I want to help build that confidence people have when they’re confident in what they’re wearing,” she says. 2121 State Route 157, Edwardsville, 618-307-5155, shopwildheart.com

USGA State Team Championship Two St. Louis-area golfers numbered among the three talented individuals representing Missouri in the 2016 United States Golf Association (USGA) Men’s State Team Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, from September 28 to 30: Skip Berkmeyer of Wildwood and Sam Migdal of Ballwin. The field consisted of teams from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each team comprised no more than three players. The course of the championship involved three rounds of stroke play, with each team’s two lowest scores being counted toward the overall team daily score. Berkmeyer was crowned Missouri Amateur Champion in 1999, 2009 and 2011 and this year won the Missouri Stroke Play Championship. Berkmeyer also has played in 28 USGA-sanctioned events during his career. In June, Migdal captured the 2016 Missouri Amateur Championship. This summer, he also won the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association’s Old Warson Cup, defeating Berkmeyer 1-up. This marked Migdal’s first time representing Missouri and his second USGA championship. Niezing Playing Well Manchester’s Chad Niezing recently qualified for his
By Warren Mayes
first USGA event. At the start of the U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying contest at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course, Niezing needed extra holes. Niezing and Matthew Cooper tied at 4-under 68. In the playoff, Niezing earned the second spot with a birdie on the third hole. Niezing has come close many times in other events, but with this feat, he finally earned a trip to his first USGA championship. Before the qualifier, Niezing captured the St. Louis City Championship at Forest Park. He finished with a 1-under-par 139 to win by two shots. That was the fourth time Niezing has won the championship. Senior Amateur At the end of August, two local players in the 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur qualifying contest at The Country Club of St. Albans – Andy Frost and Scott Edwards – earned spots in the championship played at Old Warson Country Club earlier this month. Frost was the only competitor of 57 to go under par on the 6,646-yard par-70 Tavern Creek layout. It marked the first USGA medal for Frost in 40 years of trying. Of the three spots available, Steve Groom secured the second with a 3-over 73 on the day. The final spot came to a five-for-one playoff at 5-over 75 involving Scott Edwards, Jim Holtgrieve, Ed
Walsworth, Phil Skinner and Terrence Flynn. Skinner and Holtgrieve bowed after the first hole – Hole 1 of Tavern Creek. Walsworth, Flynn and Edwards all found the fairway on Hole 7, but Walsworth could not get up and down from the bunker and earn the second alternate position. Edwards ultimately took the laurel. High School Girls’ Golf Although the Marquette Mustangs and MICDS Rams both won state championships in 2015, one won’t be repeating that feat. MICDS has been moved into Class 2 by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. The Rams have won the Class 1 title the past two years. Both teams should be strong again and have a chance to reach the state tournament. Collida Steps Down After roughly 55 years of running championships in St. Louis, including 12 city championships, Bart Collida is retiring as the city championship director. For years, he served as executive director of the annual Publinx Championship at Forest Park, whose running he took over in 1971. In 2004, at the urging of Forest Park general manager Jeff Raffelson, Collida revived the city championship, which had been dormant for 60 years.

The Ins and Outs of Arguing
I
t’s OK for teenagers to argue with their parents; in fact, it’s developmentally appropriate to disagree. But I’m not talking about over-the-top name-calling and knock-down, drag-out fights – those are never acceptable. Heated discussions of appropriate intensity and length can, however, promote growth. Young children are concrete thinkers – things are what they are. As an adolescent matures, though, he or she acquires abstract reasoning abilities. Teenagers start to understand the injustices in the world and, of course, the injustices at home. Moreover, developing minds should be encouraged to have their own beliefs. The opportunity to articulate and defend an opinion while on home turf provides teenagers with needed practice standing up to others. If kids lack a safe place to discuss tough issues related to sexual relationships, drug and alcohol use, curfews and other adolescent concerns, then they may resort to experimenting or acting out without the benefit of parental guidance. Furthermore, if teens are ever going to embrace the values of their family more than those of their friends, they need to know that mom and dad will understand and listen to their opinions. To encourage appropriate debate, parents need to truly listen to their teens. Don’t cut off your child’s thoughts, minimize his or her emotions or respond sarcastically. If you do, then your children will ignore you because they don’t feel comfortable expressing how they feel. Parents also need to model appropriate communication strategies. Maintain a civil tone, encourage turns in making exchanges and end your discussion after everyone has stated his or her opinion. If you listen to, respond to and respect what your children have to say, then they’ll make good decisions.

MEET BROOKS KICKHAM
Local Entrepreneur and Resident “I help clients think through all the critical plan elements, so they don’t spend their golden years worrying about outliving their savings.”
WHAT DO YOU DO? I help clients make, save, and keep more of their money so they can provide for the people and causes closest to their hearts. WHAT PROBLEMS DO YOU HELP SOLVE? I help with everything from grandparents who want to give the gift of education to the next generation, to entrepreneurs needing business continuity plans, to retirees who need to create an income stream. I also help people maintain their standard of living in the event of a work-ending disability or need for long-term care. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE ON THIS CAREER? As a third-generation financial advisor who married an advisor, I like to say it’s in my lifeblood. Growing up, I heard countless stories of families that would have suffered financial devastation or businesses that would have folded, absent my father or grandfather’s guidance. These stories made me appreciate the profound difference an advisor can make in people’s lives and motivated me to follow in their footsteps.
DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL MOTTO? I try to make the most out of each day, and I wholeheartedly believe that by helping clients make, save and keep more of their money, I help them get the most out of their days as well. For me, getting the most out of a day could mean anything from designing an investment strategy to help a client achieve their goals, to squeezing in an early morning bike ride, to spending quality time with my lovely wife, Wendy, and our precious daughter, Kennedy. HOW CAN SOMEONE REACH YOU WITH QUESTIONS? I can be reached by e-mail at bkickham@financialguide.com, or by calling 636.728.2453. You can also check out my website www.elitefinancialsolutionsllc.com. I hold several professional designations that include Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Life Underwriter, Certified Family Business Specialist, and Certified Long-Term Care.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU REPEAT MOST OFTEN? I remind people not to lose sight of big picture goals. For example, many people rely on their 401(k) balance to gauge when they can retire. But, account balances only tell part of the story. What’s missing is clarity of retirement goals, realistic expense expectations, an income strategy, and tools to protect savings. ig Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri (BBBSEMO), housed in its recognizable, neon-lit building on a prominent Grand Center corner, is bringing something new to its headquarters this October – or rather, something ANEW. ANEW Rooftop, half of a tandem operation, will open on the fourth-floor rooftop of the BBBSEMO building on Grand Boulevard, boasting a rentable event space overlooking Grand Center. In addition, Test Kitchen – the other half of the operation, located on the first floor – will serve breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. For BBBSEMO president and chief executive officer Rebecca Hatter, ANEW has been a project years in the making – specifically, since the organization moved to the location in 2008. Any plans for the rooftop were put on hold after the recession hit that year, but four years ago, discussions began again. “Those initial conversations were ‘We really either need to do it right or not do it at all,’” Hatter says. “That led to a lot of questions of how the community could use it for good.” Hatter adds that the mission of BBBSEMO is to build enduring relationships, an experience that’s often done at the table. Whether it’s sharing meals or sharing conversation, Hatter says it’s where experiences and connections are made. “The brand of ANEW is [to] come together, whether with your family, your company, your colleagues or your friends,” Hatter says. In its first year, ANEW will feature four experienced resident chefs: David Bailey of Baileys’ Restaurants, Holly Cunningham of Hollyberry Catering and Nourish, Kelly Spencer of The Social Affair and The Station, and James Allen of Celebrations
Restaurant in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. They will be available to cater events and also be able to cater and host their own events. Community outreach is spearheaded by account director Sam (short for Samantha) Coates and creative director Corey Smale, who also co-founded St. Louis’ beloved Strange Donuts, which is likewise connected to BBBSEMO through its foundation, Strange Cares. Smale departed Strange Donuts earlier this year to open the Chinese-influenced restaurant Good Fortune in the Central West End, among other projects. “This is probably the biggest creative project I’ve been a part of,” Smale says. “It’s cool that it allows so many people to work together.” Coates adds that the most admirable thing about ANEW is the accessibility it will bring to BBBSEMO. “Corey has said this [before], and it makes so much sense … People know what Big Brothers Big Sisters is, but they might not engage with it,” Coates says. “Having these spaces, bringing people here, going inside [the building] and seeing the people who work for Big Brothers Big Sisters gives us an opportunity to showcase the organization while also driving community relationships.” Coates says the goal is to host at least 100 events – including private, public and internal – at ANEW Rooftop within the first year. Coates says some public events they’d love to organize on the rooftop include a workshop by Treehouse Networkshop, a class from Yoga Buzz STL, something associated with St. Louis Craft Beer Week and more. She adds that the rooftop space is designed to make it versatile for any type of event, with floorto-ceiling windows providing expansive views of Grand Center and beyond and an outdoor area featuring cocktail tables, lounge furniture and fire pits. “Anybody could decorate it any way they wanted for a
wedding or a different type of event,” Coates says of the venue’s versatility. Down on the first floor, Test Kitchen will run at a different pace. The fast-casual restaurant will serve breakfast and lunch via pop-up restaurant concepts – meaning a lineup of rotating chefs, separate from ANEW Rooftop, will be able to explore different types of food and cuisines. “We wanted this space to be dynamic and interesting,” Hatter says of Test Kitchen’s approach. “We also want to continue to meet new and different people … We want to keep it very much alive and ever-changing. When you change up the chefs and bring in new concepts, it always brings new people to the table.” And that seems to be the overarching goal of the two new spaces: bringing people to the table, introducing them to one another and building relationships. It aptly echoes the philosophy of the national Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, which has been operating in St. Louis since 1914. Hatter says the organization further matches the mission of ANEW because BBBSEMO is always changing and constantly seeking out what else it can accomplish in the community. After two years of planning and one year of construction, ANEW is scheduled for its first public event, Bonfire hosted by Feast Magazine, on Oct. 26. The lineup of chefs for Test Kitchen will be announced soon. Reservations for ANEW Rooftop can be made online. “We’re very pleased with how the space turned out,” Hatter says. StackHouse Pub and Grill at Hog Hollow
72
SEPTEMBER 30, 2016 | LadueNews.com
StackHouse decidedly offers a bit more than the standard grill. In addition to burgers and sandwiches, the kitchen cooks up signature dishes such as panroasted salmon glazed in brown sugar and bourbon, served with spinach risotto, red pepper and arugula. Another popular pick features a starter: StackHouse pork wings. The bone-in pork-shank cut comes tossed in sweet-chili barbecue sauce, topped with scallions. Additional appetizers include loaded nachos, smoked wings and roasted mushroom-topped gnocchi with red peppers, green onions and roasted garlic cream sauce. Previous favorites such as a Memphis pulledpork sandwich made it onto the menu along with a StackHouse burger composed of an 8-ounce steak
patty, smoked bacon, smoked cheddar and chipotle aioli. Salads include Caesar, caprese, house and seasonal options. Two soups are available: French onion and smoky tomato bisque. Although the restaurant doesn’t fashion itself as a barbecue joint per se, a smoker does play a prominent role in its output. For instance, half and whole racks of house-smoked, dry-rubbed ribs are available, served with sides such as four-cheese mac ’n’ cheese. The short menu will expand to include offerings such as smoked brisket in the near future. Kids’ menu options include grilled cheese, a burger and mac ’n’ cheese. For dessert, choose from sweetpotato maple cheesecake or chocolate-mousse cake.

A
former neighborhood watering hole recently got a new life in Chesterfield: StackHouse Pub and Grill at Hog Hollow, which opened in July with a new food menu filled with family-friendly fare. The concept replaces its predecessor, Miller’s Crossing at Hog Hollow, which closed in December 2015 after about 14 years in business. Previous patrons of Miller’s are behind its revamped return, preserving the majority of its former Irish pub-like environs. The 3,900-square-foot space features new floors, a dozen TVs, greens walls and oak-andcherry accents throughout the dining room and bar. An outdoor patio brings the total seat count to around 110.

&SisterA Act Show

tory: In the 1970s, Deloris Van Cartier is hoping S to take her stage act to the big time. For the moment, though, she performs a small-time show at the nightclub run by her boyfriend, Curtis Jackson. When Curtis, by mistake, gives her a Christmas gift intended for his wife, Deloris feels disappointed. Her life goes from bad to worse, though, when she witnesses Curtis and his henchmen, T.J., Pablo and Joey, kill a man in cold blood. Deloris flees them to the local Philadelphia police station, where her high school classmate, “Sweaty Eddie,” is on the force and vows to protect her. Subsequently, while awaiting a court date so Deloris can testify against Curtis, Eddie stashes her in a nearby convent with the consent of the mother superior. Deloris, dressed like the nuns, is introduced as Sister Mary Clarence, a nun who’s been sent from another convent. Although she clashes with the iron-willed mother superior and chafes at her chaste and hermetic new lifestyle, Deloris comes to life when she hears the woeful strains of the nuns’ choir. She volunteers to lead the sisters in song, and soon their rejuvenated voices have become the hit of the archdiocese and all of Philadelphia. Unfortunately, they draw the attention of Curtis, who decides to track Deloris down. Can the joyful noise of the sisters and the heroics of Eddie save Deloris from a violent death? Highlights: The sensational talents of Dan’yelle Williamson as Deloris and Corinne Melançon as Mother Superior rise above the clichéd script to make STAGES St. Louis’ season-closing production of Sister Act a divinely inspired musical comedy. Other Info: Sister Act originated in 1992 as a movie that starred Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith and Harvey Keitel – proving to be one of the biggest box-office successes of the 1990s. A musical version debuted in 2006, and a Broadway version opened in 2011, garnering five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. Although Sister Act appeared at The Fabulous Fox
By Mark Bretz
Theatre in a touring production in 2013, the present presentation marks the musical’s Midwest regionaltheater premiere. STAGES’ version, stylishly directed by artistic director Michael Hamilton, is buoyed by some sensational choreography designed by Stephen Bourneuf and the exuberant singing of the lively sisters’ ensemble. Williamson displays a smashingly powerful voice that resonates on big numbers such as “Raise Your Voice” and “Sunday Morning Fever,” when the quiet and off-tune choir is resurrected by Deloris’ lively personality and persuasive stage presence into an object of beauty. Melançon beautifully captures the disciplined, resilient demeanor of Mother Superior, demonstrating her own considerable singing talents on numbers such as “Within These Walls” and “I Haven’t Got a Prayer.” The show’s best comic number occurs in Act I, when Deloris is joined at a local dive bar on Christmas night by the perky Sister Mary Patrick and young postulant Mary Robert. Watching Sarah Michelle Cuc and Leah Berry as the nun and postulant, loosening their limbs in a dance, is sheer comic delight. Cuc and Berry are wonderful in their roles throughout the show. The big, brash numbers featuring the full ensemble explode on the modest stage at the Reim Theatre, courtesy of choreographer Bourneuf as well as musical director Lisa Campbell Albert and Stuart M. Elmore’s orchestral design. James Wolk’s scenic design provides effective settings for the abbey and the accompanying church, with other scenes in nightclubs and a police station positioned up front. Although the dialogue at times is painfully corny or trite, Hamilton’s lively pacing and the superb sounds of the choir make Sister Act a “joyful noise,” indeed.

Art Speak
Q&A
with
JUDITH HENNESSEY St. Louis native, author, screenwriter, producer, artist and organic farmer Judith Hennessey has had a great month. Her first novel, a 15-year project aptly named First Rodeo, was released in mid-September – the first in a planned series of novels. The story concerns a working mother who goes out and finds her calling, fighting for her identity while helping each reader uncover the discovery that the most important relationship is the relationship you have with yourself. The book was named one of “20 Books by Women You Must Read This Fall” by Redbook and “21 New Books to Fall for This Autumn” by Working Mother, and has already been picked up by film producer Peter Kershaw for film adaptation. Hennessey’s St. Louis book launch is scheduled for Oct. 8 at Barnes & Noble in Ladue Crossing Shopping Center. Tell us about your background – did you always want to be a full-time writer? My maiden name is DiSalvo [of the historic south St. Louis DiSalvo Jeep/Chrysler dealership], and I did everything there – one of the jobs I did was a full-service, inhouse ad agency. I wrote copy; I made radio and TV commercials. Advertising helped keep my creative side busy. I started freelance writing – I was a single mom at the time, raising a young boy and running a company. I started enjoying describing with words what I saw, and travel is a perfect outlet for that, because you’re seeing different things you can describe with words – I call it painting with words. Ladue News printed my first article, on Cancun, The Ritz-Carlton. How did First Rodeo come to be? I started traveling to Wyoming in 1996, and fell in love with the state – I actually bought a house in a little town called Dubois. I wanted a safe place to take my 6-yearold son on vacation. I love horses. I grew up with horses (we had a family farm), and I decided to take my son to a dude ranch. When we went, it was heaven on earth. They do say it’s where God spends his vacations – I believe that. I ended up buying my house three years later, in 1999, and as my son got a little older, I was able to spend bigger chunks of time there. That was when I started writing this novel – 15 years ago. I really wanted to write something bigger than travel. I really got the feel for living in a ranching community, made friends with ranchers, lived around cowboys and got a feel for the authentic experience of living in the West. And this is where the book is based? Yes, actually, based in St. Louis and Wyoming. It’s not a romance – it’s authentic. The life of a cowboy is extremely difficult. I definitely want people to be entertained and have fun with this book, but I also wanted to describe the reality of the contemporary West, so the reader could experience that. This is the first in a series – do you already have an idea of where this woman’s story will take her? Yes, the second novel is finished. It’s ready to release hopefully next year. There’s a third one started. That one … I don’t know, I’m up in the air where the journey will take Kate. It’s definitely one character you will follow. Tell us about this organic farm. My husband and I bought a 50-acre farm in Defiance and started Ravens Ridge Farm, an organic vegetable operation. Last year was our first year. I have a gardening partner, and he does the bulk of the heavy work. We sell at farmers markets in Creve Coeur, Wildwood and Kirkwood, and also source to Smokehouse Market, John Mineo’s and Chandler Hill [Vineyards, where Hennessey is hosting a book signing on Oct. 22].

The book celebrates the joyful season of Christmas and features a children’s holiday pageant retelling the story of the Nativity. Left Bank Books presents an evening with best-selling author RIDLEY PEARSON, who will sign and discuss the first novel in his Lock and Key trilogy, The Initiation. The story imagines the beginning of one of literature’s most famous rivalries: Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty. The latter grows up as a curious boy in Boston with a penchant for trouble – until he’s reluctantly thrown into a boarding school. He ends up rooming with a young British know-it-all named Sherlock Holmes. The event will take place at the St. Louis County Library headquarters at 7 p.m.
Thu., Oct 6, to Sun., Oct. 30
The New Jewish Theatre presents the opening of GOLDA’S BALCONY, which marks the beginning of the theater’s 2016-17 season. The production tells the story of the life of Russian immigrant Golda Meir, from her time as a schoolteacher in America to her role as the fourth prime minister of Israel. Much of the play focuses on her public life surrounding the 1973 Yom Kippur War and tackles complex ideals of power, idealism and compromise. The play comes from the late American playwright and novelist William Gibson.

F
or a travel writer to name a favorite cruise experience is something like a parent picking a favorite child, so i won’t do it publicly. But just between us, i’ve taken two trips that i adored above all others. Both were on the same Horizon II barge, one of the luxurious hotel barges belonging to French Country Waterways, and both traveled gracefully, deliciously and divinely through the ancient man-made canals of the Upper Loire in France. it was the same six-night trip, years apart, and a wonderful experience each time. Today, hotel barging is done on luxurious tourism headliners traveling rivers and canals throughout the world, as well as French inland waterways. in the beginning, barges were the stars of French commerce and would carry cargo between a vast network of rivers and man-made canals. After being upstaged by the invention of faster railroads and trucking systems, barges continued to trudge along, transporting goods as bit players until the mid-1960s, when they dramatically took on a new role. Credit for the metamorphosis goes to a British journalist who, after hitching a ride on a commercial barge, saw enough tourist potential to buy an old barge, outfit it for paying passengers and launch a delightful new way of cruising through the countryside. The pizazz of any given barge depends on the design of the interior space, the décor and the number of passengers. As old barges were originally built to fit into ancient locks, most share the same dimensions. Some barges arrange space to house four passengers, others to hold 24. The fewer the passengers, the more space available per person. The Horizon II gets everything right. it comfortably carried 12 passengers on my original trip. in 2005, French Country Waterways completely gutted and rebuilt the barge, and today it holds eight passengers, maximizing not only space but also attention to each guest. i picked the Horizon II for my first barge trip based on its itinerary and reputation. i didn’t know of French Country Waterways’ St. Louis connection then, but i do now, and have great appreciation for the long-distance, mid-America-to-mid-France running of the company. Glenn Carr of Collinsville, illinois, is president of the family-owned French Country Waterways and says, modestly, his company’s success belongs “hands down to the good people who work for us.” His praise includes patricia Schmidt, an interior designer from o’Fallon, illinois (another local connection), whose firm handles the design and decorating of remodeled and refurbished French Country Waterways barges. Schmidt chose dark French cherry wood to cover the walls of the Horizon II; red and blue solids, patterns and plaids for fabrics; and nautical finishing touches to make the barge feel as cozy as a country home and as chic as an upscale boutique hotel. Four bedrooms sit on a lower level, down a few stairs. Large by barge standards, staterooms are designed to hold all belongings needed for the cruise – which aren’t extensive due to its country-casual dress code, calling for only one night of jackets and ties for gentlemen. The en-suite bathrooms are stuffed with amenities including Bulgari toiletries, heated towel racks, fluffy bathrobes and showers with strong heads spewing hot water. The dining room/lounge/library/help-yourself bar (which staff stocks with passengers’ favorite brands)
sancerre
occupies the midlevel deck and is the place where passengers gather for drinks, meals, relaxation and conversation. The upper-level sundeck stretches over the front of the barge, a few steps up from the lounge. Passengers use the sundeck for alfresco dining, sunshine lounging, and embarking and disembarking from the barge at docks. Passengers also can borrow a bike stored on deck, hop off the barge as it travels through a lock, then bike or stroll to the next lock to reboard. So what’s so special about a Horizon II cruise? First off, the staff: On my spring 2016 trip, the talented crew consisted of the captain, a chef, two hostesses, a tour guide and a deckhand. (Six crew to eight passengers – a pampering ratio if ever there were one.) Although most of the crew were French, all spoke fluent English and were exceedingly accommodating and fun-loving. I, as a gourmet, favored the chef, who delivered the most extraordinary meals three times a day. Eating and drinking on the Horizon II could substitute as a crash course in French culinary delights. Breakfast came with breads and pastries purchased fresh from the best bakery wherever we docked. Buffet lunches and multicourse dinners sourced ingredients from local markets and farms along the route. Three extraordinary French cheeses accompanied each lunch and dinner, as did a dramatic selection of premier cru, grand cru and special wines available only locally. Gourmets and oenophiles on my cruise agreed that the “chef’s night-off” dinner excursion to the Michelin-starred Les Templiers in Les Bezards wasn’t as good as most dinners on the barge. Nothing much happens on a barge trip, and that’s the beauty of it. The boat docked at night, on the outskirts of tiny villages, and floated during the day, at the pace of a swan, through ancient canals and locks flowing through backyards of villages and fertile countrysides. Once a day, passengers can take a tour or excursion by foot or car to some point of nearby interest. On my trip, we visited two remarkable chateaux, enjoyed a wine tasting, walked through several lovely villages, and toured a porcelain factory and outlet shop in Gien. But best was being on board, drinking fabulous wines, eating luscious meals, talking and relaxing on deck as we floated through scenery in the region noted as the “Garden of France,” where every blink reveals a picturepostcard image of rural perfection and every minute brings pure pampering pleasure. French Country Waterways owns and operates five barges (the Adrienne, Esprit, Nenuphar, Princess and Horizon II) traveling in different regions of France. The Horizon II offers six-night cruises from early April to early November. Horizon II staff picks up passengers each Sunday afternoon at a predesignated Paris hotel and shuttles them to the barge, docked about 2½ hours away. Return to the same Paris hotel takes place the following Saturday morning after breakfast. The all-inclusive price, starting at $6,095 per person based on double occupancy, includes round-trip transport from Paris, all meals, an open bar, fine wines, dinner at a Michelinstarred restaurant, and all tours and excursions. Tipping suggested at 5 percent of the tour fee costs extra and comes at the guest’s discretion.
