TRISH MUYCO-TOBIN PHOTO BY SARAH CROWDER; MAKEUP BY AMY KOEHLER; HAIR BY REN BINDER OF RENDITIONS SALON. SHOT ON LOCATION AT ST. LOUIS PUBLIC LIBRARY’S CENTRAL LIBRARY.
THIS WEEK, FACEBOOK NATION OBSERVED ‘NATIONAL UNFRIEND DAY.’ The idea was launched in 2010 by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who believes that the word ‘friend’ is being used loosely on the social media network of 1.3 billion users. Mr. Kimmel’s claim is backed up by a number of recent studies, including one by an Oxford anthropology professor, who found that the average person can maintain no more than 150 meaningful relationships. In his declaration, Mr. Kimmel suggests categories by which one can unfriend another. Among them are the so-called ‘over-sharers,’ those who insist on sharing that they overslept, burnt their breakfast toast (picture included), or that they went to the gym (apparently, the workout doesn’t count unless you tell people about it). I’ve always believed a good rule of thumb is to conduct oneself on social media the same way you would at a family wedding: Yes, while there are loved ones around, there also are people there who don’t really care whether there’s a snowflake on your windshield or UPS delivered the wrong package. In 2009, the New Oxford American Dictionary declared ‘unfriend’ its word of the year. So, yes, it’s a thing—and it’s OK.

Mee t Our Sta ff
W hat are you thankful for? JULIa CHRISTENSEN My significant other and I recently hosted a ‘friends-giving’ party, and I will soon attend our family Thanksgiving dinner. I am thankful to have so many wonderful people— and pets!—to celebrate with this season. Oh, and coffee. I am ever-thankful for coffee.
Blaise Hart-Schmidt I’m eternally grateful for my supportive family, awesome friends, great job and good health. I’m also thankful for the little things—kind strangers, long phone calls with faraway friends, a pleasing piece of art, the first sip of a perfect cappuccino.
Brittany Nay I am grateful for the health and happiness of my amazing family and friends— and for Netflix.

DINNER AT THE CHESHIRE
K
BY DIANE ANDERSON
aren Mitcham-Stoeckley, co-author of A Culinary Legacy from Escoffier to Today, and Michel Escoffier, of the Escoffier Museum in Villeneuve-Loubet, France, were guests of honor at an Escoffier dinner hosted by The Restaurant at The Cheshire. Michel Escoffier is the great-grandson of culinary master Auguste Escoffier. The dinner was hosted by the St. Louis Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier International, a professional organization of women leaders in food, beverage and hospitality. The Cheshire’s executive chef Rex Hale prepared a five-course Escoffier meal that honored the masters of French cuisine and the journey the author took in discovering her own very special connection.

BY DIANE ANDERSON
HE CAROL HOUSE QUICK FIX PET Clinic fundraiser recently was held at The Vino Gallery in the Central West End. Guests were treated to a selection of fine wines, imported beers, hors d’oeuvres and desserts while learning about the ‘Quick Fix Express’ transportation program. Event proceeds will be used to purchase and staff an 18-foot-long step-up van, capable of picking up 50 pets at pre-designated locations, giving them to the clinic for surgery, and returning them the following day. Reducing the pet overpopulation saves tax dollars and helps to eliminate euthanasia as a means of shelter control. Spotted in the crowd were clinic co-founders Christine and Richard Camp, and Amy and Brook Dubman.

LIVING
THE DESCO GROUP
A Holiday Destination BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN
W
ITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON COMES holiday shopping, and Ladue’s Colonial Marketplace is dedicated to providing customers with a unique and convenient retail, dining and lifestyle destination. “The center offers a variety of dining, personal services and high-quality boutiques,” says Mark Schnuck, president and CEO of The DESCO Group. “We bought the property in late 2011 when it was largely vacant and outdated; and since then, we have repositioned it to be a first-class place to shop, dine and relax.” Many St. Louisans may know this area (on Ladue Road east of Ladue Crossing and I-170) as the former home to Lammert’s Furniture and Gift Co.—and those who haven’t seen it since then may not recognize the refreshed, remodeled and refilled space. A tour of the Colonial Marketplace begins when you park your car—or rather, when a valet parks it for you. Complimentary valet is available to customers
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Next, it’s time to decide Where to? Are you visiting for shopping, food or services? “We curated the center primarily with shops that cannot be found elsewhere in St. Louis,” Schnuck says. “For example, we have the first-and-only Paper Source store in our city. Dimvaloo is the exclusive seller of Lorna Jane activewear in our market. And Frill Home carries home furnishings that can’t be found elsewhere.” Other shops include unique gift, home, kids and clothing store The Woman’s Exchange; children’s boutique City Sprouts; attire and accessory destinations Splash, Marta’s Boutique, Ivy Hill Boutique and Byrd Designer Consignment Boutique; shoe and clothing shop Sole Comfort; specialty food store Extra Virgin, an Olive Ovation; wedding shop Town and Country Bridal Boutique; and jewelry store YLANG YLANG. If you’re in the area for services, Clarkson Eyecare and Southwestern Hearing Centers can
assist your senses; Blown Away Blow Dry Bar and Dominic Michael Salon are ready to perfect your look; and FedEx Office takes care of printing and shipping needs. And finally, there’s food. “Our shoppers benefit from two excellent dining options—breakfast or lunch at The Original Pancake House, and lunch or dinner at Giovanni’s Kitchen,” Schnuck says. The Woman’s Exchange also offers lunch and treats. Look for a variety of promotional sales and events at Colonial Marketplace throughout the holiday season.

Pushing Boundaries: The All-New Hyundai Genesis and Equus
S
BY MUNGENAST HYUNDAI
top for a moment and think about life’s pursuits. It’s all about perception, right? Whether perceived status, intelligence, or success, we are driven to create for ourselves an image of our ideal selves – to shape the way others see us. To create the best lives possible for ourselves and those closest to us. But what might hold considerable value to one person may not carry the same weight with another. Everything we do in life means something different from everyone else’s vantage point. Instead of placating others to win their favor, indulge yourself with what you actually want – even if you want everything. Allow us to introduce you to the premium lineup from Mungenast Hyundai – the 2014 Equus and all-new 2015 Genesis sedan. Both are here to challenge your perception of pure, unadulterated luxury. Everything you want, nothing you don’t – and more you’ll soon wonder how you ever lived without. Uncompromising craftsmanship and attention to detail, premium design and feel with a profound sense of dynamism and purpose are what you will discover in both of these elegant vehicles. The 2014 Hyundai Equus offers the same level of luxury one would expect from competing models that can easily cost $100,000 or more. A car to drive, or to be driven in, the Equus can be yours for $499 per month for 36 months with $3,999 due at lease signing. And with our signature Equus Concierge Service, if you can’t come to us, we’ll bring the car to your home or office for a private demonstration. Should your vehicle require service, simply call us at Mungenast Hyundai, and we will valet your Equus to and from our dealership and you will
be lent an Equus of ours to drive while yours is being serviced. Between the opulence the Equus affords and the premium, first-class experience we offer for it, your friends will think you’ve spent thousands more – but the fact that you didn’t will simply be our little secret. Genesis is all-new for 2015 and returns with more aggressive styling, advanced technology, the latest passive and active safety features and available HTRAC all-wheel drive. In fact, the Genesis is the first rear-wheel drive luxury sedan to earn the IIHS’s highest honor of Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with optional Automatic Emergency Braking. Hyundai recognizes that wearable technology is the future, and
with the 2015 Genesis, the future is now. With Hyundai’s proprietary BlueLink system, remotely lock, unlock, or start the Genesis from your smartphone, PC, or even Google Glass. At Mungenast Hyundai, we take pride in making your dream of owning a luxury car, that is every bit as intelligent and unique as you are, a reality. Right now, lease a new Genesis for $429 per month for 24 months with just $3,999 due at lease signing. Discover the Equus and Genesis at Mungenast Hyundai, conveniently located near the intersection of Lindbergh Blvd. and I-270 at 649 Dunn Road in Hazelwood, MO.

OR THE ALPINE SHOP, A RETAIL establishment that specializes in backpacking and camping gear, Small Business Saturday, or the Saturday after Thanksgiving, has become the official kick-off day for holiday shopping. To entice customers, The Alpine Shop, which has stores in Kirkwood, Chesterfield and O’Fallon, Illinois, works with suppliers to drop prices on popular brands by as much as 30 percent. Traditionally, many big suppliers wait until Benjamin Ola. Akande is a professor of economics and dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology at Webster University.

the week before Christmas to drop prices, but The Alpine Shop’s strategy has paid off handsomely. In recent years, the chain has doubled its sales and attracted twice as many customers during Small Business Days as on Black Fridays. Millions of small businesses around the country are discovering that Small Business Saturday is a great way to kick-off the holiday shopping season. It also is a wonderful way for customers to support local small business and help boost their city’s economy. In 2012, consumers spent $5.5 billion at local small businesses and restaurants on Small Business Saturday, according to a survey conducted by American Express and the National Federation of Independent business, a Washington, D.C., trade association. When you shop at a small business, there’s a good chance you’re supporting a neighbor, friend, church m e m b e r o r o l d sc h o o l mate. There’s also a good chance you’re helping create job opportunities in your community. In effect, by spending with a local business, you are more likely to have an immediate and meaningful impact on your local community than if you spend with a big-box, multi-national retailer that’s susceptible to the whims of Wall Street. This year, several business districts in the Greater St. Louis region are hosting an array of events to promote small businesses in their communities prior to Small Business Days and throughout the holiday season. On Nov. 29, the City of St. Louis will host a St. Louis Holiday Magic festival, an event that will feature a variety of entertainment and shopping. Several exhibitors will be in attendance, including vendors who will offer gift ideas. Maplewood and Brentwood have posted Small Business Saturday events on their websites. At many of these events, the downtown boutiques and restaurants of these cities will offer gifts, drawings, treats and discounts. But supporting local businesses shouldn’t just be confined to festive time, even though most businesses make the bulk of their revenues during that period; it ought to be a year-round endeavor. For this forthcoming Small Business Day, local small businesses should endeavor to draw customers in with head-turning decorations and aggressive online media promotion. Once inside, they should cultivate them by offering great products and service, coupons, refreshments and opportunities to win gifts. They also should strive to engage customers year-round. This way, the customer, small business and the community win.
WHEN YOU SHOP AT A SMALL BUSINESS, THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE YOU’RE SUPPORTING A NEIGHBOR, FRIEND, CHURCH MEMBER OR OLD SCHOOLMATE. THERE’S ALSO A GOOD CHANCE YOU’RE HELPING CREATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN YOUR COMMUNITY.

What’s on Santa’s List This Year? R
BY RICHARD GAVATIN
EMARKABLY, IF YOU WERE TO COME across a wish list from 2013, many of the items would not be found on this year’s list. In one year, the technology/gadget landscape changed. Here is this year’s list, which we’ve divided into five categories: 1. Headphones 2. Laptops and hybrids 3. Tablets 4. Smart phones 5. Wearable tech
HEADPHONES Some say the Beats Studio Wireless is overpriced. That may be so, but it is a well-built, comfortable wireless headphone, with excellent sound and strong battery life. • The option for those of you who don’t want to spend more than $200 is the Sony MDR-10RBT. • It’s hard to make in-ear wireless headphones, and while the Plantronics BackBeat Fit isn’t perfect, it is one of the top picks in the category and it costs less. • If you are willing to pay approximately $250, the wireless Bose SoundLink Bluetooth On-Ear is comfortable (and it sounds good). • A high-end Bluetooth, Parrot Zik2 is significantly lighter than the earlier version and comes in several color options. This is considered by many as the most advanced headphone on the market, but only if you ignore the voice-calling feature and just use them for music.
nice, with good color reproduction and decent viewing angles.
Surface Pro 3. This is called a productivity tablet, meant for business. Priced at $950.
LAPTOPS AND HYBRIDS Laptop or a hybrid? Can you tell the difference? The line between traditional clamshell laptops and shape-shifting hybrids has blurred during the past couple of years. Today, many hybrids can pass for everyday laptops, which are great for productivity, while laptops add touch screens and other forward-looking features. Hybrids • Lenovo’s Yoga 3 Pro is a thinner, lighter hybrid allowing you to take it apart, which is why it falls in the category of ‘convertibles.’ It’s got great reviews, but it also costs some $1,300. • Another hybrid is the Acer Aspire Switch 10 it uses a powerful magnetic catch that connects two prongs on the top of the hinge to two openings on the bottom of the tablet screen. This works really well. The keyboard is detachable. Not all reviewers are happy, but it is a lot less pricey at approximately $300. • The most costly of the hybrids is the Toshiba Satellite P50T. It also only scored an average of 6.0 on 10 point scale by several reviewers. Other than that lack of optimized apps — a problem for every high-res notebook—the screen is quite
TABLETS An ocean of tablets is available, and they vary from small, cheap and unsophisticated to big, expensive and incredibly smart. Here are but a few examples: • The Samsung Galaxy Tab S has a razorsharp (2500x1600) screen, the design is ultrathin, the weight negligible. You get a lot, if you just pay some $500. Great for movie watching, but sometimes the touch screen can be a little slow. By and large, this is the best Android tablet currently. • The best beginner-level tablet is the Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 Inch. It is user-friendly, as a beginner’s tablet should be. It has a Mayday button if you need help, the screen is great, processing power has been increased, there is a rear-facing camera and the hardware is markedly slimmer. Depending on model, the price ranges between $379 and $600. • The HTC Google Nexus 9 is by some considered an even better Android. Not as slim or lightweight as others, but it is fast! The drawback is that some apps don’t run as well as you might expect. Cost: $500. • Lastly, we want to mention Microsoft’s
SMART PHONES This is of course the category with the most choices. Here are a few: • One that is expensive, but good, is the LG G3. With a phone plan, the cost is normally reduced. The screen, 5.5 inches has a great resolution and an advanced camera, described as a workhorse. The technology is flawless and this may be the best smartphone on the market right now. • You like a stylus to write with? Then the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is for you. It is cheaper than the LG G3 but with a bigger screen, 5.7 inches. Some complain the light is low and therefore indoor camera shots aren’t as good, but this is outweighed by the speed and the screen size. • Another Samsung product is the Galaxy Note Edge, which looks different with a curved screen and experimental feel. However, it is a solid phone and a good buy. • While these three are all using the everpopular Android operating system, one should not forget the iPhones and the Windows based phones. In the latter group, there’s HTC One M8 Continued on page 79

TALKING POINTS
Why Join Toastmasters? Part 2 BY FRED MILLER
Increase Confidence Since the fear of public speaking is one of the main fears people have, facing it is the first step in lessening it. But we really don’t want to eliminate it completely! Toastmasters tells us to take the “butterflies in our stomach and teach them to fly in formation.” A Toastmasters club is the perfect setting for this. It is a nurturing environment where many have been in your shoes and can easily relate to the courage you’re demonstrating. In many clubs, you are assigned a mentor who can direct you through the structured steps Toastmasters provides. They can provide oneon-one guidance, encouragement, and help a member get over hurdles. There also is an evaluation section in each meeting where speakers are told what they did well, and which parts of their presentation needed improvement. This assessment is based on the member’s experience and level of competence. No one is going to say, What were you thinking!? Statements like that would not be helpful. We know when we get out of our comfort zones, we make our comfort zone larger—a good thing! Giving a speech at a club will do that. I’m not going to equate it with sky-diving; however, I know people who, because they learned to speak to groups, attempted things they previously avoided! Increase Knowledge Because members speak on a variety of topics— work, hobbies, family and special interests—they always are exposed to a large variety of subjects. Often, it is an issue they might never have considered looking into, but found beneficial. I’ve been in clubs with people who gave presentations about foreign travel, music and exercise, among other topics. On my own, I would not have exposed myself to a number of them, but benefitted by being a member and in the audience. My knowledge grew with each presentation and this has helped me be a lifetime learner. Increase Listening Skills We’re aware we have two ears and one mouth. Too many only listen enough to find an opening and let others know what we think. If you’re evaluating a speaker—or have a duty at a Toastmaster meeting—listening well is essential. It’s also one of the best ways to learn. Active listening, a skill learned in Toastmasters, serves well those who practice it.
Time Management There is a structure to a meeting that must be followed. Managing the time allotted to each portion is important to the success of it. Toastmaster of the evening, table topics master, general evaluator and all others participating must work within allotted time constraints. If you’re one of the speakers, including pertinent information you want to present in a timed speech is a skill Toastmasters teaches. How many times have you attended a presentation where the speaker suddenly announces, Gee! I’ve only got five minutes left and 15 slides to run through before we’re finished. Hold on! That’s not good time management. Giving Feedback This is the evaluation portion of a meeting I mentioned earlier, and the part many members consider most important. Each attendee has joined with the goal of improving their public speaking skills. Evaluating a speaker by telling them how great they were and how you can’t wait till their next presentation gives them warm kudos, but doesn’t provide guidance for improvement. Toastmasters teaches the ‘sandwich’ method of evaluating a speech: Here’s what I liked, and here’s where I believe you can improve. The
speaker is too close to their own stuff to do a thorough job critiquing themselves and needs an outside, honest observer who ‘tells it like it is’ in a non-critical manner. A presentation has two components: content and delivery. The evaluator must hone their listening and observation skills to do their job correctly. Someone can have great content, but not present it in a manner that educates, entertains and explains it well. Following this formula, an evaluator helps the speaker, and learns a life skill that will help in all kinds of relationships. Pointing out distracting presentation elements such as the use of filler words (ah, you know, so, etc.) and bothersome body language (swaying, hands in pockets, etc.) will help the speaker improve. Lifelong Friendships I’ve had the privilege to speak to a number of Toastmaster clubs and at several club anniversaries. One of the ways I’ve opened my talk is by asking, Who remembers their first Toastmaster meeting? Immediately, 90-plus percent of the attendees raise their hand. Universally, there is a camaraderie and instant connection among Toastmasters that is hard to beat. I’ve been fortunate to have made many lifetime friends through this great organization.

LIV ING LEGAL CORNER: HOLIDAY OFFICE PARTIES
Hold the Mistletoe
T
BY LISA WATSON
HE HOLIDAYS ARE A ROMANTIC TIME— who would argue that? After all, the season’s gatherings are filled with good cheer, a few drinks and a healthy dose of mistletoe. But whether you’re planning your office holiday party—or just planning to attend—it’s worth a reminder that real life is not like Love Actually or When Harry Met Sally. Local attorneys shared with LN their advice for avoiding the pitfalls of too much holiday magic in the workplace. “A lot of people say not to call it a ‘Christmas party’ because you might offend some people,” notes Sam Hais of Hais, Hais & Goldberger. “I think a better rule is to make sure it’s not considered mandatory, no matter what you call it. We still have freedom of speech, and you can have a party for Christmas or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus if you want to. People celebrate different things, and that’s what makes America great. In an office environment, it’s important not to make the party mandatory, so people don’t feel like they’re being required to do something they don’t need or want to do.”

What Can I Expect if I File for Legal Separation?
St a n g e L a w F i r m , P C
Legal separation can be confusing, particularly in how it differs from divorce. It may please you to know that there are many ways in which it is the same as divorce, even though couples who file for legal separation stay officially married. However, it’s important to know that there is still a legal process behind legal separation; couples are not considered legally separated simply because they haven’t been living together for a period of time. You may ask, when should you file for legal separation? If you aren’t sure that you officially want to end your marriage, but you know 54
that you don’t want to continue living with your spouse at the current time, then legal separation may be the best option for you. Signing a separation agreement begins the period of legal separation. The separation agreement dictates the circumstances of the separation, handling many of the same issues as a divorce settlement, including child custody and spousal supports. It’s important to remember that legal separation will still be a significant lifestyle change, even though it is not an official divorce. Legally you may still be married to your spouse, but your lifestyle will likely be very similar to that of a divorced individual. As such, you may want to remove your name from documents or information that ties you to your spouse, such as apartment leases or mailing addresses. Remember that not all states recognize

BUSINESS CONNECTION Randall Grady, managing principal at Riezman Berger, concurs: “If you make employees go to these things, it could be on the books—you might have to pay them,” he notes. “If it’s an obligation where they have to attend or meet clients, you might run into overtime, especially if they’re hourly employees.” Once you’ve created a welcoming vibe, the next concern for employers is safe consumption of alcohol, notes Thomas SanFilippo, of Thomas SanFilippo and Associates. “It’s not really a party unless there’s alcohol; it’s just a meeting,” he jokes. “Owners typically would be wise not to have office parties on the premises (in the office).” Having the party at a rented space removes the premises liability from the employer, and Missouri does not hold hosts liable if a third party is injured if a guest is driving home after having too much to drink, he says. Grady adds that employers still should check whether they have an insurance policy that covers afterhours events; and that, “driving drunk is never a good thing, and you don’t want to be the one who makes it happen. One way around it is providing vouchers for cabs, which encourages people to make good decisions. A lot of companies do things like that.” The next thing to consider, notes Hais (only half in jest) is, “Avoid mistletoe: It just leads to problems.” It might sound silly, but it’s true, Grady agrees: “Mistletoe is fun, but it’s a slippery slope. You’re allowing people to have courage with RANDALL GRADY, the alcohol, and if you provide the Riezman Berger mistletoe, things might happen that nobody wants to happen.” The biggest liability for employers throwing a social party is the possibility of sexual harassment, SanFilippo notes. “People say something they wouldn’t otherwise after a couple of bowls of loud-mouth soup. And Missouri has a broad general standard for sexual harassment—it’s something said that’s sexual in nature or disparaging to a gender, that creates a hostile work environment. That’s a pretty low bar.” In the end, SanFilippo adds, employers should consider what kind of employees they have and take precautions accordingly. Is the staff young and prone to partying? Then take sensible precautions with respect to alcohol, like providing cab rides home. “If something happens at the office holiday party because of alcohol you provided, it might not be direct civil liability, but it could be bad publicity.” And sensible consumption is key from the employee’s perspective, too, he adds. “Don’t make it the one night a year where you really decide to drink. You’re likely to say and do things that will make you look silly or get you fired.” Grady concludes, “It’s a balance between having a party and people enjoying themselves; and not exposing people unnecessarily to risks, and protecting yourself should those risks occur.” Keeping common-sense precautions in mind, the office holiday party can be a fun time to get to know your co-workers a little better. Happy holidays!
“DRIVING DRUNK IS NEVER A GOOD THING, AND YOU DON’T WANT TO BE THE ONE WHO MAKES IT HAPPEN. ONE WAY AROUND IT IS PROVIDING VOUCHERS FOR CABS, WHICH ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS.”

T’S NO SECRET THAT ORAL HEALTH HAS A direct link to overall well-being. And with mounting evidence, dentists are doing all they can to take their patient care a step further. “People usually see their dentist more than their physician, and physicians are already overworked and overloaded,” notes Dr. Srdjan Ilic, owner of Prestige Dental Care. “If we can help them by catching these things that manifest in the mouth early by doing simple screenings to lessen the burden on them, we can help the patients and doctors—everybody wins.” Ilic notes that patients who come to his practice receive screenings that they might not be accustomed to in the dentist’s chair—from bloodpressure checks, to a family health history questionnaire, oral cancer screening, and information on diet and nutrition. “In the past, dentistry was thought of as the red-headed stepchild of medicine; but slowly, it’s beginning to come to the forefront as being preventive,” he says. “The research shows by keeping oral health in perfect shape, we can actually prevent or even improve some of the
systemic diseases that are present in the population today.” Cardiovascular disease is one of the primary health concerns with known connections to oral health, Ilic says, noting that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease. Conversely, uncontrolled Type II diabetes puts patients at a higher risk for periodontal disease, he adds. Poorly controlled diabetes causes slow healing, and increases the risk of infection after oral surgery. Medications that cause dry mouth also increase the risk of soreness, ulcers, infections and cavities. Inflammation, long associated with periodontal disease, also has links to a whole range of other diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, poor pregnancy outcomes, infertility and certain forms of cancer. Regular oral wellness visits can help prevent, identify and limit damage caused by systemic inflammation, Ilic says. Amy Loli, a registered dental hygienist at Prestige Dental Care, notes that the practice

CHEST PAIN
When In Doubt...
C
HEST PAIN IS NOTHING TO fool around with; and physicians remind everyone to play it safe and call 911 if you think you could be having a heart attack. “We really don’t use our emergency medical system enough,” says SLUCare cardiologist Dr. Michael Lim. “Time is of the essence when a heart attack happens, and the EMT responders can assess the situation and start treatment right away.” The pain associated with heart attack often is described as a squeezing or pressure in the center of the chest that comes on quickly, lasts more than a few seconds, and is sometimes accompanied by shortness of breath, lightheadedness, sweating, pain in the arm or jaw, and nausea. Again, Lim stresses the importance of quick response. “Don’t sit around trying to figure out what’s wrong,” he says. “And don’t put off calling 911 because you’re afraid it might not be a heart attack. That’s not cause for embarrassment—it’s good news.” While chest pain is the ‘classic’ heart attack symptom, some people have atypical symptoms related to heart attacks, notes Dr. Ben Morrison, a cardiologist with Heart Health Specialists at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Women and elderly people, in particular, don’t always follow these typical patterns,” he says. “Some report severe fatigue, anxiety or shortness of breath in the absence of crushing chest pain.” While it’s crucial to respond to chest pain that could be cardiac in nature, many instances of chest pain actually are caused by a variety of other conditions. “A decent way to think about other causes of chest pain is to think about organs in proximity to the chest, including the heart, lungs, ribs and gastrointestinal tract,” says Dr. Byron Baptist of Mercy Clinic Internal Medicine. And even when chest pain is heart-related, it may not always herald a heart attack. “Angina is cardiac chest pain that can come on with exertion and is relieved with rest,” Baptist says. “Aortic dissection is a tear in the aorta that can often lead to low blood pressures and be potentially life-threatening. Myocarditis and pericarditis are infections or inflammation in the muscle or lining of the heart.” Pneumonia, inflammation of the lining of the lungs or lung abscesses all can cause chest pain, and asthma may cause chest tightness, along with wheezing. “Often times, muscle strain or coughing can lead to a musculoskeletal injury in the muscles surrounding the ribs, known as costochondritis,” Baptist adds. “Other areas to consider are the GI tract as the esophagus and heart share similar nerve supply. In addition to all that, if your doctor

“DON’T SIT AROUND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT’S WRONG AND DON’T PUT OFF CALLING 911 BECAUSE YOU’RE AFRAID IT MIGHT NOT BE A HEART ATTACK. THAT’S NOT CAUSE FOR EMBARRASSMENT— IT’S GOOD NEWS.” DR. MICHAEL LIM, SLUCare cardiologist
has ruled out other causes, anxiety has been found on several occasions to be the culprit of chest pain.” One of the more common causes of chest discomfort is basic heartburn caused by reflux and known as GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Antacids, or prescription medications for more severe cases, can control the reflux and reduce discomfort. “Other gastrointestinal causes
of chest pain that occasionally get confused with cardiac causes include pancreatitis, peptic ulcers and gallbladder disease,” Baptist adds. In most cases, chest pain is not life-threatening. However, “the lingering potential for fatality makes chest pain a clinical symptom that should never be ignored,” Baptist says. When in doubt, check it out.

MSG
Is It Safe?
W
HEN FLAVORS NEED s o m e ex t ra z i n g , MSG can do the trick. Monosodium glutamate commonly is used to enhance the flavors of meat, poultry, soups and stews; and is a common additive in Japanese and Chinese cuisine and many processed foods. However, some people find that MSG causes a range of uncomfortable reactions. Although the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology has concluded that MSG is not an allergen and is a safe food ingredient, selfreported reactions include headaches, flushing, sweating, nausea, heart palpitations and weakness. In addition, some people who suffer from migraine headaches report that MSG is a trigger. The difference between food allergies and sensitivities involves whether the body launches an all-out immune response to the substance. Allergic reactions occur when antibodies are sent by the immune system to attack an allergen, and
the subsequent response can range from mild and short-lived to life-threatening. Food sensitivities, including the reported reactions to MSG, do not involve an immune response and are much more common. “Over the years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not been able to confirm that MSG caused the reported effects,” notes Debbie Roth, a licensed dietitian at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. The FDA, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization all classify MSG as safe. Roth explains that MSG is actually composed of “the sodium salt of the common amino acid glutamic acid. Glutamate is produced in the
Board-certified experts: John Chi, MD(left) and Gregory Branham, MD
body and is essential to human metabolism, the digestive tract and brain function.” This naturally occurring amino acid that is found in almost all foods, especially high-protein foods. If MSG simply is a combination of substances already present in the body, why do some people report negative reactions? “Many controlled studies have failed to consistently show trigger reactions related to MSG intake. However, the glutamate in MSG in an excitatory neurotransmitter, which causes increased brain activity in certain areas and may result in migraines,” explains Julie Pozzoli, a registered dietitian with St. Luke’s Hospital. The general advice for those who notice reactions to MSG is to avoid the ingredient when possible. “To limit intake of MSG, consume whole, fresh foods,” Pozzoli says. “MSG is often found in many processed foods, such as canned soups, crackers, meats, frozen meals and much more. It also can be hidden in other ingredients found on food labels. These ingredients include hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed protein, hydrolyzed plant protein, sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, yeast extract, textured protein and autolyzed yeast. While most people do not have a reaction to MSG, some do; and while it may be a substance that is difficult to avoid, it’s not impossible.”

HOME ALAN BRAINERD INCORPORATED
A Passion for Design BY LISA WATSON
S WE SURROUND OURSELVES WITH FAMILY A and friends this holiday season, we also take the time to enhance our homes with beautiful touches to make these cherished moments even more memorable. But the holidays aren’t the only reason to beautify our homes—a well-kept and beautiful environment can make every day more relaxing and memorable, says interior designer Alan Brainerd, who also is design editor for Ladue News. To make it easier for his clients to find those special pieces to fill their home, Brainerd is consolidating his businesses—Alan E. Brainerd Interiors and Great Estates—to launch Alan Brainerd Incorporated. At the age of 21, Brainerd originally founded the interior design company in 1984, and moved it from Belleville, Illinois, to St. Louis in 1998. Through the years, he dabbled in the estate sale business, as well; and in 2011, co-founded Great Estates. Earlier this year, Brainerd bought out his partner in Great Estates and opened a consignment shop. “I have decided to take a recess from doing actual estate sales, as the demand for an upscale consignment shop has taken more of my time and been more successful
than I expected,” he says. The store is located at 2214 S. Big Bend Blvd. and will be the headquarters for both the design and consignment operations. “I have come to realize that it is because of my passion, knowledge and years of experience that people call on me for these services,” says Brainerd, who has completed design projects throughout St. Louis, as well as in 19 states and Mexico. “I travel extensively and have forged relationships with some of the leading curators, architectural historians and design industry experts for the past 30 years.” Visitors to the store will find a little bit of everything—from furniture to lighting, artwork, area rugs, vintage jewelry and other decorative items— from a variety of periods, Brainerd notes. “That is what is exciting about a consignment shop: It is constantly changing.” His favorite items currently in the shop include three antique light fixtures—one from a castle in Austria, and two from 19th-century France. Brainerd enjoys researching each item so that he can share its history with customers, he says. Brainerd says the client’s design aesthetic always should trump his own. “A project should reflect

the client’s taste and not mine. It is important to educate the client along the way, but in the end, the client lives there. Joan Schnoebelen and Megan Rowe
Megan Rowe L aura McCarthy Real Estate agent Megan Rowe has been around real estate for most of her life. Rowe’s mother, Joan Schnoebelen, started working in real estate when Rowe was 5 years old, so she grew up around the business. Rowe herself got her real estate license at 18, and began working with her mom during the summer while in college. After she graduated, she got a full-time job at Laura McCarthy doing advertising and helping agents. This taught her another aspect of the business, Rowe says, and after three years, she teamed up with her mom. “She’s my partner, and my best friend,” Rowe says. Because Rowe and her mother work together, Rowe says clients can always get a hold of one of them. “I’m always there for my customer,” she says. “We’re really good about if one of us
is not available, the other person is here.” Both born and raised in St. Louis, the motherdaughter team has strong networking skills and the ability to get things done. “After being in sales for so long, I get a good idea of what people want,” Rowe says. “I can figure out people’s tastes pretty quickly, even if they haven’t expressed them to me, and I’m not afraid to shake the tree and call someone and see if they are interested in moving. That’s the way the real estate market has gotten. You have to find stuff that’s not on the market.” Clients also appreciate the team’s dedication to the business. Their tagline, A Legacy of Commitment, represents both their long history in the business, as well as their bright future. “I’ll be in real estate until I can’t work any more,” Rowe says. “We enjoy it. My customers are my friends, and my friends are my customers. I don’t feel like I’m working. I’m enjoying it.”

TeaCeption SO, CRANKY IS 16. LIKE MOST 16-YEAR-OLD girls, she is focused on a few priorities: clothes, boys, texts, One Direction and homework—if the last item is not on that list, please don’t shatter my belief system. So it comes as no surprise that when a diet miracle appears on social media, Cranky would be quick to jump on it. Said miracle presented itself in the form of an Instagram post from the Kardashian-Jenner clan—a true testament to their famous-forno reason status. It seems Kendall’s bestie’s boyfriend’s sister used the product with astonishing results. It’s a tea—not just any tea—miracle tea. The tea that wakes you up, clears your skin, makes you thin, keeps you healthy, improves endurance and lifts your mood; like I said, miracle tea. Now, were this product geared to a more, shall we say, mature demographic, it might not make such bold claims. We tend to get a little skeptical after 80 or 90 purchases. This, however, is targeting teenagers; so much like the claim, the tea is full of it. The kit Cranky selected—the two week “teatox”—was $44. It includes one kind of tea to drink before breakfast and lunch and a separate detox tea at night. I agree to participate, pausing only briefly to contemplate what sort of toxins could have possibly accumulated in a 16-yearold’s body. The package arrives a few days later and I have to say the product looks legit—it’s not the Ziplock of grass clippings that I imagined,
Debbie Baldwin
TANGENTIAL THINKER and the box is quick to point out a laundry list of items the tea does not contain. It does not have gluten or caffeine or calories or animal products or fat. Of course, what it does contain is harder to discern, but Cranky seems fine with the absences listed. Let the games begin. Mom, the tea is disgusting. I almost barfed. We are off to a dubious start. Truth be told, the tea tastes fine, like musty green tea, which is probably what it is. That’s the day tea. The night tea is something different altogether. The taste, which resembles something akin to wet mulch mixed with used hockey pads, was not the worst part. The worst part was, shall we say, the effect. I don’t want to go into too much detail, but suffice it to say I was vaguely reminded of a time in Mexico when I drank from a hose spigot. Moving on. So the week progressed. Pounds lost: zero. Dress sizes lost: zero. Wrinkles eliminated: zero. Dollars lost: 44. In the end, we splurged on a fad. We spent $44 on $6 worth of loose tea and a painfully obvious pamphlet of diet tips—drink plenty of water throughout the day. I also got three separate 10-minute breaks while the tea steeped, where I got to sit with my teenage daughter and catch up: An unintended side effect that made the entire experience well worth it.

Rosewater
HOSTAGE CRISIS RATING: 6 out of 10
T
HIS FILM IS BASED ON A true story and marks the directorial debut of funnyman and The Daily Show host Jon Stewart. The reasons for Stewart’s career shift seem apparent when it becomes clear that an appearance by Maziar Bahari, the subject of the film, on Stewart’s late-night talk show may have unwittingly triggered the events that followed. Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael Garcia Bernal) is arrested in Iran and accused of spying, while covering the 2009 elections. Bahari is suspected after the Daily Show stunt where he interviewed a “spy” for comic effect; the more likely reason was Bahari’s filming of demonstrations protesting government corruption. Bahari spends 118 days captive, enduring intense physical and psychological torture. Blindfolded much of the time, he only recognizes his interrogator, (Kim Bodnia) by his scent of rosewater. The film is based on Bahari’s memoir and thus no spoiler alert needed for how it all turns out. The overriding message of the film is the need for free press—a somewhat academic end to a very human experience. That, combined with the obvious lack of suspense, make for an interesting, if lukewarm, film.

’LL GIVE YOU THE BAD news first. The big movie opening last week was Dumb and Dumber To. A sequel that, in 1994, thenBegin Again A-lister Jim Carrey scoffed at as preposterous. I guess when it’s that or a reality show, the choice is a bit more tempting. The good news: a lot of terrific DVD options were released this week as well. Maleficent Angelina Jolie is spectacular as the evil queen with more to her than the fairy tale describes. It’s an 8. Begin Again This is a terrific romantic drama about a down and out record promoter (Mark Ruffalo) and the bright young talent he stumbles upon (Keira Knightley). It’s an 8. A Most Wanted Man This disappointing thriller is worth seeing for Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final performance alone. If you weren’t a fan, skip this poorly constructed film. It’s a 5. Let’s Be Cops It’s not in the Oscar race, but this goofy buddy comedy starring New Girl actors Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. is a decent comedy. It’s a 6. 22 Jump Street This sequel is exactly as you would expect—a slapdash script with a handful of tongue-in-cheek sequel jokes, a few crotch shots and two mildly amusing leads. The real treat here is Jillian Bell in a laugh-out-loud supporting role. It’s a 6.
All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914
BY MARK BRETZ COMPANY:
STORY: Five months after the outbreak of World War I, a number of British, French and German troops positioned in trenches alongside “no man’s land” stopped their fighting for a brief but poignant period on Christmas Eve, 1914. Tentative and leery at first, they slowly emerged from their rat-infested trenches to extend holiday greetings to each other. They sang songs, exchanged simple gifts and even participated in an impromptu soccer game on the frozen terrain. Later, they were admonished by superiors for this “breach” of protocol in warfare, which was never repeated due to the threats of disciplinary action. But for several hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 1914, four years before the conclusion of “The War to End All Wars,” soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict dared to show their humanity on a quiet battlefield.
HIGHLIGHTS: Directed by Mustard Seed Theatre artistic director Deanna Jent along with musical director Joe Schoen, this hauntingly beautiful and deceptively ‘simple’ one-hour musical is masterfully performed by a cast of 10 talented singers. The accomplished performers blend their diverse voices in affecting harmony to breathe new life into this century-old tale that is touching and inspirational.
Mustard Seed Theatre VENUE: Fontbonne Fine Arts Theatre, Big Bend at Wydown DATES: Nov. 20-23, 28-30, Dec. 4- 7, 11-14 TICKETS: $25$30 (or Pay with a Can/Pay What You Can on Thursdays); contact mustard seedtheatre.com RATING: A 5 on a scale of 1-to-5. More reviews available at laduenews.com
Delivery of songs by 10 voices that form a cohesive unit with striking clarity can be rousing or touching, depending on the emotions expressed in each tune. Truly an ensemble piece in the best definition of the word, All Is Calm features each performer essaying a couple of historical figures, mostly unknown, but all people whose innate goodness transcended the insanity around them. Jent’s direction is disciplined and direct, letting the songs move the audience as well as the men who inhabit Kyra Bishop’s evocative set of barbed wire and boards on either side of the stage and ‘no man’s land.’ A special nod goes to dialect coach Richard Lewis, whose efforts are handsomely realized in convincing efforts by Gary Glasgow, Christopher Hickey and J. Samuel Davis, among others affecting Irish, Scottish, German and additional accents. Besides the aforementioned players, Schoen’s music direction impressively guides all the performers contributing to the tight, crystal-clear vocals, including Charlie Barron, Shawn Bowers, Jason Myers, Antonio Rodriguez, Tim Schall, Luke Steingruby and Jeffrey Wright. Each showcases his own impressive vocal abilities. As a unit, they tightly mesh, depicting the bonds of these everyday men who were thrust into a war not of their own making, a war none of them finds satisfying or meaningful. For one brief, shining moment, soldiers from different countries on both sides of the terrible and senseless conflict banded together to salute each other’s essential humanity. That moment is beautifully realized in this musical and in Mustard Seed’s marvelously taut and tender representation. It’s a sobering but splendid way to usher in the holiday season of 2014, one century after the night when all was calm.

PANORAMA
Dinner with a View
BY SIDNEY LEWIS
PANORAMA AT THE SAINT LOUIS ART Museum opened last year in the new East Building expansion, offering elevated dining options for museum-goers and local gastronomes alike. We sampled the fare there not long after the doors opened and were suitably impressed. Since then, the restaurant has undergone some changes in the kitchen, necessitating a return trip. The restaurant takes its name from the stunning view of the Grand Basin afforded by the floor-to-ceiling windows that comprise the north side of the dining room. Decor-wise, it has remained the same—elegant and understated. While the space has remained much the same since our last visit, there have been plenty of changes to the menu. Chef Ivy Magruder, known for his work at Vin De Set and the various Gamlin Restaurant Group ventures like Sub Zero and Gamlin Whiskey House, took over the reins at the restaurant earlier this year. Under his direction, the Panorama menu seems to be more streamlined than last time around. It features a tightly focused selection of soups, salads and entrees, all of which carry on the restaurant’s commitment to local ingredients and purveyors, which includes Companion Bakery, Ozark Forest Mushrooms and Raincrow Ranch, among others. There’s a chill in the air, meaning it’s soup weather, so we started off with bowls of the Smoked Bacon & Shrimp Bisque ($7); and the Soup Du Jour, a sensuous chicken curry that struck a tasty balance between sweet and spice. The bisque was big and savory with a nice herbal accent of rosemary.
Not only is autumn a fine time for soups, it means all manner of squash are available for dinner. Two dishes on the entree list make good use of these delectable vegetables: the BreadedGrilled Chicken & Spaghetti ($18), and the Autumn Zucchini, Kale & Mushroom ($17). The chicken dish features strips of chicken laid across a bed of shredded spaghetti squash, with a savory charred tomato coulis, wild mushrooms, basil and topped with shaved Parmesan. Take our word for it, you’ll never miss the pasta in this one! The zucchini dish has the eponymous vegetables atop a layer of tangy goat cheese polenta and a nutty romesco sauce. The zucchini was nicely prepared, tender but not soggy, and the polenta was creamy perfection. Both dishes were accented quite nicely by a glass of Gruet Rose ($7). While we ranged around the menu on our own, the restaurant offers a three-course prix fixe meal for $35 that’s a great deal for those who can’t decide on what to indulge in. Panorama has a relatively small selection of wines, beers and house cocktails, which we’d like to see expanded. The restaurant still is only open for dinner service on Fridays, from 5 to 9 p.m., though there’s daily lunch and Sunday brunch service available. Hopefully, dinner hours will someday be available throughout the week—it’s a shame to relegate this menu to just one evening.

HANNEKE’S WESTWOOD MARKET AND CATERING SERVICE
To Market, To Market...
BY DIANE ALT

M
ANY OF US GREW UP WITH the convenience of a neighborhood market within walking distance from home. It was a simple childhood pleasure that I remember well: walking those six long blocks to the ever-so-small grocery with about 50 cents in my pocket, and returning home with a small brown bag filled with Bubs Daddy foot-long bubble gum, Marathon Bars, Candy Sweetart Lipsticks and so much more! These days, these little markets seem to be fewer in numbers; however, such a place still exists in Glendale. With its wood floor, deli case, sandwich counter and plentiful selection of candies, Hanneke’s Westwood Market and Catering was established in 1914 (originally as Westwood Market named after the Westwood Golf Club, now Westborough Country Club). According to Glendale Historical Society, it is the oldest business in Glendale. In 1934, Lawrence Hanneke purchased the business; and for 100 years now, the market has been a favorite gathering place for neighborhood children to satisfy their sweet cravings. “If there is a day off from school or it’s after school between 3 and 4 o’clock on a Friday, every kid within a 1-mile radius of the store is in here,” notes Suzie (nee Hanneke) Westerbeck, who now owns the business with her husband Brett. The couple took it over from Suzie’s father, Don Hanneke, when he retired in 1998. “It’s the kids’ Friday celebration, and they are in here buying candy and whatever else they can find.” Suzie, who began working in the market at age 12, explains that the grocery store offers “practically everything” that a customer could need, along with a deli case and lunch counter filled with fresh, house-made salads, pizzas, soups, and sandwiches like The Vineyard (made with turkey, Swiss cheese, a pesto-mayo, sprouts, and tomato). Local companies featured in the market include products from St. Louis Veg Girl, Breadsmith, Kaldi’s Coffee, Two Men and a Garden, Dad’s Cookies, Volpi and Salume Beddu, among others. While Brett oversees the market’s operations, Suzie manages the catering component of the business. “The catering aspect started because of a demand for such a service about 40 years ago,” Suzie recalls. “Customers would come in and asked my dad if he could throw something together for this event or that event, and it grew from there. Back then, there were maybe five caterers in St. Louis, and my dad was one of them.” Suzie notes that their catering service is one of the preferred caterers at many popular St. Louis venues, including the World’s Fair Pavilion, the Jewel Box, Kuhs Farm and Lafayette Park Boathouse. “We don’t have set menus,”
“WE DON’T HAVE SET MENUS. EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS CUSTOMIZED, WHETHER IT’S A SEATED DINNER, STATIONS OR A BUFFET—IT CAN BE MIXED AND MATCHED TO BE EXACTLY HOW THE CUSTOMER WANTS IT TO BE.” SUZIE WESTERBECK, co-owner
she explains. “Everything is always customized, whether it’s a seated dinner, stations or a buffet— it can be mixed and matched to be exactly how the customer wants it to be. And we have clients who ask for local products at their events—so I source exactly what they want.” Through the years, Suzie says the recipes from the market and the catering service have been developed by her father, various staff members and herself, with client favorites, including the beef tenderloin and the pistachio chicken. For Thanksgiving, the market takes orders for fresh turkeys, as well as prepared turkey dinners. “At
Christmas time, our biggest seller is our beef tenderloin, which we grill and cook for reheating. We typically cut off orders at Dec. 15 because Christmas Eve day can be the craziest day of my life,” she laughs. In January, Suzie explains that they will look at some renovations at Hanneke’s Westwood Market. “We want to just change the store up a little and put a bit more into the deli and the to-go offerings,” she says. “You know, when we are on vacation, we always stop in the little markets we come across and check them out. We talk with the owners and ask them what works for them. There just aren’t that many stores like ours around anymore.”

has offered routine blood pressure screenings for three years, which have alerted many patients to a problem they were previously unaware of. “We’ve had patients come back after seeing their doctor and tell us, Thank you, I never knew I had high blood pressure, she says. The goal at Prestige Dental is to care for the whole patient—which also includes alleviating any fears that some people associate with dental care, Loli says. Patients are met by a serene environment and amenities that include noisecanceling headphones, comfortable pillows, and complimentary soothing drinks like coffee, tea and infused water. “We understand people have concerns and fears,” she says. “You really have to trust the person who’s working on your mouth.” She attributes this inclusive approach for the practice’s many long-term patients, some of whom have been coming to Prestige Dental for as long as 50 years. “We need to focus on prevention, not treating disease that’s already there,” Ilic concludes. “Because of advances in dentistry, that’s now possible. There are genetic markers and tests to catch things early on, and not let it get to the point where it’s an active disease that you have to try and fix. That’s why I believe it’s important to do what we can to help everybody out.”
phone but made for Windows. While it has a brilliant display, great speakers, and a powerful processor, there are drawbacks: a nonremovable battery, less than perfect camera and too few apps. WEARABLE TECH Wearable tech is a label for high-tech watches and so called fitness wearable, for the exercise-minded. Sometimes the line is blurred, as in these few examples: • The Pebble Steel (with Android operating system) has a crisp display, is waterproof and has been named the top smart-watch pick, because its construction. It can hold a number of apps, but the price tag at $199 may be considered steep. • On the other hand, the original Pebble Watch is more affordable at $99. The sleek design is what you lose when you save $100. • But if your budget allows $385, the LG G Watch R is stylish and based on the Android operating system. This is for the Androidcurious with money to spend. • Waterproof, with a months-long battery and automatic sleep tracking, the Mistfit Flash costs just $50 and can be worn on the wrist or as a clip-on. It tracks steps and sleep. But it lacks a heart-rate monitor and the plastic

design feels a little cheap. The LED readout shows daily progress and blinks hours and minutes, but doesn’t show step count. Despite this, it works as a watch. • Lastly, there is the Withings Activite which looks like a regular watch but has tech inside. Waterproof, with a battery that lasts a year, it tracks your steps and will set you back almost $400. Good luck with your shopping.
