EDITOR AS I REFLECTED THIS THANKSGIVING ON THE PAST YEAR, I REALIZED that I have a lot to be thankful for. Not only was I hired as Ladue News’ managing editor, but also I got married to an incredible man, and we purchased our first home and are now expecting a little baby boy or girl. Although this edition of Ladue News technically comes out after Thanksgiving (and you still might be recovering from that extra plate of turkey that was just calling your name – I know I am), I can’t help continuing to feel thankful. In today’s world, we are always on the move, we are always connected to computers or devices, and we forget to reflect on life’s blessings. However, the Thanksgiving holiday made me realize the importance of putting everything on hold to truly appreciate the blessings – no matter how big or small – more than just once a year. We at Ladue News hope that our publication brings you light, inspiration and smile-worthy content – something to look forward to each and every week. In this week’s edition, we’re sharing our very special annual Gift Guide (starting on p. 37), which we hope will help make your holiday shopping fun and less hectic, as well as stories from our thriving community. We hope that you enjoy this issue and that you and your family had a very happy Thanksgiving. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

Nothing Like It By Amanda Dahl | Photos by Sarah Conroy

F

ur coats instantly elevate your style to an untouchable level of elegance. The Fur and Leather Centre understands better than most the inexplicable draw of this instant-status wardrobe item. “Fur is a beautiful thing to the eyes,” The Fur and Leather Centre owner John Hanlon says. “It’s not like most flat textiles. Fur has dimension. It is warm, like nothing else you put on. It has this feel on your skin. One of the things you have to prepare for when wearing fur is that people will want to come and touch you.” Recent trends have transformed what you see on today’s racks – and these are definitely not your mama’s furs. “Color is hot right now,” Hanlon explains. “So many designers have gotten involved in the last five years and are pushing the bounds and dimensions of fur. The industry is responding by coming up with new technology and processes to add color.” The classic silhouettes are still a big seller, their timeless designs guaranteed to stay in style. However, fresh takes on throwback designs encourage consumers to think outside the box. “Capes, ponchos, vests, stoles and wraps … that’s what’s really coming back,

which is exciting. It’s this cool retro vibe, but they’re also practical,” Hanlon shares. “When a lady goes out, the first thing that gets cold are her shoulders. You’re in a sleeveless dress or strappy gown, and the restaurant is too cold. Put on that stole, and you’ll look phenomenal.” Hanlon describes many new favorites to be found at The Fur and Leather Centre. One item has already proven to be a showstopper. “I’ve got an elasticized, dyed silver-fox shrug. You can wear it around your shoulders evenly or asymmetrically – or even pull it down to wear as a skirt. I have a customer who is buying one in every color for her daughters and nieces. It’s really striking,” he says. Furs are guaranteed proper care at the retail salon, where a specialized process cleans while conditioning and moistening the leather to increase suppleness. “If you take care of your fur, you can go through five or six cars before having to replace that coat,” Hanlon promises. The coat is only the beginning, though. Discover gloves, scarves and even a new hat collection, featuring fresh fashions with reasonable price-points. “Young people are really getting into fur – and that is a promising trend for us,” Hanlon shares. “The Fur and Leather Centre is a fun destination. Ladies come in and try on new looks, take pictures and post it to social media. They all are laughing and having a blast.” The Fur and Leather Centre, 7901 Clayton Road, Clayton, 314-997-3877, furcentre.com

AN EVENING WITH CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER AND FRIENDS

T

Photos and story by Diane Anderson

he third annual Evening With Cedric the Entertainer and Friends gala recently took place at the Peabody Opera House. Guests enjoyed a VIP cocktail reception followed by dinner and a concert. The evening started with a comedic performance by Cedric himself, with special guest George Lopez, followed by an unforgettable performance from Grammy Award-winning legend Smokey Robinson. This event supports the Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, which supports women’s health services by providing a comprehensive place for women to receive care not only in traditional areas of obstetrics, gynecology, breast disease and oncology care but also in areas as diverse as sports medicine, depression and heart disease. The pavilion is named after Cedric’s mother, who lost her battle with cancer in 2015.

What a great night celebrating women’s health, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, the Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion and the incredible city of St. Louis! I have never been more proud to serve such a great cause and surround myself with a community of believers. The women’s pavilion at SSM Health St. Mary’s named after my late mother, Rosetta Boyce Kyles, is an honor and a lasting tribute. My sister Sharita and I are humbled and blown away by it. It was my mother’s dream to establish a place dedicated to providing comprehensive health care and education for all women – a place to truly service the community. All of you helped us make that happen.

he historic Coronado Ballroom lies only a block or two from St. Francis Xavier College Church, which made it a fitting location for the Grand Night Gala celebrating the church’s 175th anniversary. Manifold guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, as well as piano music, while browsing silent and live-auction items, before entering the ballroom for dinner and a program. Although the original building at Ninth and Lucas was begun in 1840, the church moved west with Saint Louis University and broke ground on its current site at Grand and Lindell in 1883, thereby still enjoying its association with the university and explaining its moniker, College Church.

When we moved to St. Louis in 2008 and were looking for churches, we came to College Church with our children, who were very small at the time, and felt like it was home for us. HEATHER PISKOROWSKI, CHURCH MEMBER

CHARITIES & NONPROFITS: Feature Story

STRAY RESCUE OF ST. LOUIS

O

n Saturday, Oct. 29, Stray Rescue of St. Louis was hit with devastating news: Multiple dogs were infected with distemper, a highly contagious viral disease that’s often fatal to dogs. With hundreds of dogs in their care, staffers and volunteers have been doing everything they can the past month to help their hurting and sick fourlegged friends. Stray Rescue founder Randy Grim says the past month has been hard, both emotionally and financially. At the time LN spoke with Grim, the no-kill shelter had lost 28 dogs to the disease, and 50 were infected. Grim said the organization had already spent more than $50,000 on medication alone. “No shelters are immune to these outbreaks, but we’re more prone to this because of the kinds of dogs we rescue,” Grim says. “The dogs we take in are often in so bad of a shape that we don’t even know if they’ll make it.” Initially, Grim says he and his staff weren’t vaccinating these high-risk dogs immediately when they got to the shelter for fear doing so would worsen their condition. However, they’ve been working with a specialist from the University of Wisconsin who is now recommending they vaccinate all animals they bring in immediately going forward. “It’s a scary, tough time,” Grim says. “The community has been amazing. People have been dropping off donations constantly. The love and outpouring is what keeps us going.” Now more than ever, Stray Rescue needs the help

of the community. One way to help is by attending the annual Hope for the Holidays Gala, which is themed “Anything Is Pawssible” this year. The gala will take place Dec. 2 in The Chase Park Plaza’s Khorassan Ballroom. This year’s star cover dog is Champ. Grim says Champ’s story embodies everything the rescue organization stands for. “When I rescued Champ, he looked at me, wagged his tail and then immediately went into a coma,” Grim recalls. “He was covered in mud and was used in a dog-fighting ring. He was beaten so badly, and his chances of survival weren’t good.” Grim rushed the dog to Veterinary Specialty Services in Manchester to be treated. Champ remained in a coma, but Grim visited him every day. “One day, I walked in and Champ was waking up,” says Grim. “He saw me and started crying tears of joy. I could tell he remembered me and was so happy to see me.” Besides having a bit of a bum back leg, Champ made a full recovery, Grim notes, and went to a wonderful home. The social media outpouring of love behind Champ’s journey made the community more aware of animal abuse, Grim says. “Stories like Champ’s help people realize that these lives are worth saving,” he says. “They deserve a second chance to know what love is. Champ symbolizes what Stray Rescue is all about.”

BONA FIDE BAMBOO

By Sarah Kloepple

M

ary Joyce Mathis of MJM Design Company redesigned the kitchen of a well-traveled client in St. Charles who desired an Asian-inspired space. “The first thing she told me about her kitchen remodel was that she wanted to have room to seat her entire extended family for a holiday meal,” Mathis says. The room features bamboo floors, a bamboo window treatment, a wild sea-green granite countertop on the island and a black matte finish on the perimeter of the countertop. Mathis removed the existing cabinetry to make way for brandy-finished maple cabinets. Light fixtures include metallic pendants above the island and a Chinese red drum shade above the sink for a pop of color. “One thing I think makes a huge impact are the black doors above the fridge [and microwave],” Mathis says, adding, “They’re supposed to mimic a bamboo reed. That’s what they do, and I think it’s striking.” In an opposing wall not pictured, Mathis included red recessed shelves to maximize space. Next to the shelves are an orientalstyle double cabinet to house the client’s many cookbooks and travel keepsakes. Mathis says she and the client ultimately hoped to create an interesting space in a compact area of the kitchen.

Games that once lined arcade walls are being given second lives as custom-made coffee tables by a Missouri artisan, 2000 Man.

Pinball Wizard M

ac McNally says he’s always liked to tinker. He recalls “building mousetrap cars in my parents’ basement” and taking a metals-focused sculpture class while studying at the University of Minnesota. “At the time,” McNally says, “I didn’t realize that art was a passion that I would go on to pursue.” Now, the Missouri craftsman known as 2000 Man creates nontraditional, quirky pieces that are equal parts artwork and furniture, often centered on one beloved hunk of metal: a pinball machine. “A good friend of mine owns a vending arcade business,” McNally explains of the nontraditional source of his inspiration. “I started seeing old, dilapidated pinball games just sitting around his warehouse. Pinball is such a beautiful medium; it was a shame to see these machines just sitting there not being appreciated. I asked him if I could start experimenting with some of them, and he said go for it.” And so the pinball table was born. As showcased on his Instagram feed (@2000.man), McNally turns pinball machines into coffee and end tables, occasionally even with working lights. “I am self-taught when it comes to wiring, so sometimes the [lighting] experiments don’t always work out,” he says, noting the fun of the ever-different experience of his work. Price varies, starting at around $700. His craftsman skills extend into other forms of custom tables outside the arcade realm, but all include at least a hint of that midcentury modern vibe. “Midcentury modern is definitely where my style is centered,” McNally says. “But when someone asks me to create a new piece, I try to match [his or her] style as best I can. For example, my friend asked me to make her an outdoor table for a kitchen workspace. I took the legs from an old pinball machine and built a rolling rustic table with barn wood. It sounds weird, but it worked well.” The theme of reusing materials comes up a lot when examining McNally’s work. Although the arcade pieces are an obvious upcycle, even the wood he works with – mostly white oak, red oak, black oak and black walnut – is often locally sourced. Future projects will include black oak from a tree that recently blew over on his father’s land at the Ozarks, for example. It’s all about what’s available. “While in school, I worked at the [University of Minnesota’s] Weisman Art Museum, a beautiful building designed by Frank Gehry,” McNally explains. “He is primarily known for his architecture, but [he] also has designed some interesting furniture, using wood. His architectural style started with the incorporation of basic construction materials such as chain-link fencing and sheet metal. Basically, products that were readily available. I utilize a similar process, in that I use what I can find, such as unused arcade parts, and repurpose them into new pieces.” Although McNally’s shop is in Lake of the Ozarks, St. Louisans are only a few clicks away from his work – locals also might have spotted one of his tables at

Rise Coffee House in The Grove. His social media presence is full of an adoring audience amazed at his one-of-a-kind pieces. “I love when people comment on my pieces!” he says. “Anytime someone shares my photo or comments, I try to interact. Social media is the best way for a small business to gain traction when you are just getting started. It levels the playing field. If I offer up something that people like, and others appreciate it, then good reviews [or] word of mouth lead to more opportunities.” Work by McNally can be found online, as well as at John Elliott Interiors at the Lake of the Ozarks and at South Jefferson Mid Century Modern in St. Louis. According to McNally, “Both … have very different styles, but appreciated what I was creating.” Additionally, custom orders are welcome for “pinball or otherwise.” “What started out as just a hobby has now turned into something a little bit bigger,” 2000 Man concludes. 2000 Man, chairish.com/shop/2000man, 2000mandesign@gmail.com

BRIAN SIMPSON OF EAST + WEST The Central West End has a new menswear destination since local boutique East + West recently relocated there from Kirkwood. Ladue News caught up with shop owner Brian Simpson to find out more about the store, its new space and what’s coming next. What types of products does East + West carry? We’re a men’s lifestyle store specializing in a contemporary casual aesthetic. We dress the everyday guy from head to toe – apparel and footwear – and also provide accessories that he’d be interested in, which include bags, apothecary items and household goods. What differentiates East + West from other menswear stores? Our service model and unique product offering are two things we take pride in and focus on here at the shop. We try to offer the most unique, hard-to-find products while maintaining a high level of service for our customers. We work with brands from all over the world, and many of them are unique to the region. What do you look for when finding new lines to carry? We always ask ourselves, “Is this a brand we would wear ourselves, and can we stand behind the products

60

they offer?” Ultimately, we want to make sure we work with brands that fit into the overall narrative of East + West in that they are authentic, unique and provide value. Your store just moved – what has changed at the new location? The new location in the Central West End can best be described as East + West 2.0. We’ve changed the aesthetic a bit so that it has more of a clean and modern feel to it. Along with that, we’ve brought in a few more brands that fit the new aesthetic and direction of the shop, particularly ones from Europe. What can customers keep an eye out for in the future at East + West? We’re excited to continue to expand our online store as well as our in-house East + West line, in which all of the products are manufactured in the USA. Also, we’ll be expanding our footprint within the region, as we’ll be opening a new location in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this December in a new development made entirely of shipping containers.

Gauging the Economy Under President Trump By Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande construction of thousands of public facilities around the country. Investing heavily in infrastructure development could be an added bonus to a still-recovering economy. But as The Wall Street Journal pointed out recently, the road to this ambitious investment could be bumpy, since the plan relies heavily on a tax break for private sources, leading to infrastructure financing. Also, many experts believe that having private sources pour money into infrastructure projects in exchange for tax credits will fall short of the amount needed. Then there’s also the concern that spending heavily on infrastructure could lead to higher long-term interest rates. Gridlock-Free Washington: Although many corporations have awaited the advent of a new administration with a mix of hope and anxiety, there seems to be mostly hope. There’s a sense among many large corporations and lobbyists that they will be able to get more done now that the executive branch and both chambers of the legislature are controlled by the same party. As The New York Times noted shortly after Election Day, the phones of many lobbyists have been ringing nonstop. Such lobbyists and their clients are confident they can work with their allies on Capitol Hill to get rid of or weaken regulations that have impeded their abilities to do business. This could be great news

for many investors. Deregulation: That word is music to the ears of investors and many large corporations. Trump has pledged to roll back parts of the Dodd-Frank financial reform legislation, environmental regulations and labor protections. Such measures would have a huge impact on banks, oil and gas companies, and the pharmaceutical industry. Of course, the future of the economy is all speculation at this point. January 20, Inauguration Day, still lies eight weeks away. And a lot can happen – or not happen – between then and January 2021.

Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande is the 21st president of the 166-year-old Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. He has a Ph.D. in economics and previously served as dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology at Webster University.

he aftermath of each presidential campaign brings wildly divergent forecasts about what the inauguration of the new occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. might mean for the economy. Just hours after Donald J. Trump was elected this nation’s 45th president, markets around the world experienced wild swings that frightened investors. But in the end, the Dow recovered fully, and the Standard & Poor’s stock index rose. Some analysts attributed the uptick in the markets to a perception by investors that Republicans are more business-friendly than Democrats. But predictions by economists are just that: predictions. That said, here are a few trends in the coming days, weeks and months to watch closely. These trends could help shape the nation’s economic climate in the next four years and beyond. Infrastructure Investment: It’s no secret that a large percentage of the nation’s bridges, roads and public school buildings are overdue for extensive renovations or replacement. Trump has proposed pumping $1 trillion into public infrastructure investment over time. This proposal has echoes of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration of the 1930s and early ’40s, which created a massive number of jobs and led to the

that always asks, “Why us?” Colleges want to know what you have learned from your research about them and why you might be a good fit. So you can’t just write one answer and submit it to all the colleges on your list, simply changing the college name. Why? Because just writing one forces you to stay general. “I like the campus,” “The teacher-to-student ratio is small,” “You have a good ranking in magazines,” “I like your climate,” etc. Dig deeper. If you want to study engineering at Duke, you need to say at the Pratt School of Engineering, or for business at University of Michigan, it’s the Ross School. ang in there, high school seniors – the college application process is almost over. November and December are tough months for those applying to college. Those who applied “early decision” faced a November deadline, and the wait for a mid-December reply can be agonizing. If you aren’t accepted to your first choice, the application process repeats itself, but to multiple colleges. For those applying to “stretch,” “right on” and “safety” schools – as many as six to 10 – some are just running out of gas. They put their heart and soul into that 650-word common application essay and now are hitting the supplements. The most competitive colleges demand extra essays, as many as three or four, with word counts ranging from 100 to 500 words. This surprises some students. They’ve possibly been juggling courses, sports and social commitments, all while trying to enjoy senior year with all this added obligation of college applications since September. In fact, many of my clients started last June and are now glad they did. Still, there is an urge to write off the supplements quickly just to get them done. Sorry, but this is a mistake. College admission committees look at the supplements carefully, especially the ubiquitous one

Heroes of Healing

More than 400 physicians affiliated with Washington University in St. Louis were recently named the best in the country by a national medical authority.

By Connie Mitchell Photos courtesy of Washington University School of Medicine

W

hen the national organization Best Doctors recently released its updated 2016 directory, more than 400 physicians on the list were affiliated with Washington University in St. Louis. That’s more than a third of the St. Louis-based physicians listed on the nationwide, peer-selected panel. This kind of recognition is not unusual for the more than 1,300 physicians at Washington University Physicians, many of whom are specialists within their specialty, according to chief medical officer Dr. Sam Bhayani. Bhayani himself is a prime example of the expertise exhibited by many of the physicians at Washington University Physicians. “I am just one of many leaders at Washington University,” says Bhayani, who not only performs his administrative role but also serves as the Holekamp Family Endowed Chair in Urology, professor of urologic surgery and co-director of robotic surgery at the Washington University Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery. “A lot of us have different roles,” he continues. “Overall, my [administrative] role is to help enhance quality of care, assist with partnerships with our hospitals and the community, and also assist with partnerships with our payers, the government and regulatory bodies.” He does all this while also assisting other physicians with complex clinical situations and teaching and performing urological surgery specializing in kidney and prostate cancer. Not every Washington University physician is as busy as Bhayani, though he says many of his colleagues also have multifaceted duties that include clinical, educational and research work. Although it might seem a physician doing so much would be spread too thin, Bhayani says that most of his colleagues are driven by a passion for the profession. “We certainly have physicians who have a passion for discovering the next great medical treatment, others who have a passion for being at the bedside, others who have a passion for being in the operating room and others who are great teachers,” he says. “Oftentimes, they have a passion for more than one of these things.” For example, these physicians might be investigators in clinical trials while treating patients. Or with one of the nation’s highest levels of National Institutes of Health funding for research, many Washington University physicians are on the forefront of developing new treatments and procedures. Of the $646 million in research funding received by Washington University in the 2016 fiscal year, $400 million came from the National Institutes of Health, and most of the remainder came from other federal agencies or private foundations that support biomedical research, says Dr. Jennifer Lodge, vice chancellor and associate dean for research.

70

NOVEMBER 25, 2016 | LadueNews.com

“Many of the researchers with MDs or MD-PhDs are also some of our best practicing clinicians,” Lodge says. Among the major initiatives currently underway, Washington University researchers are exploring drug treatments to prevent the onset of dementia in those with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease, mapping and understanding neural connections in the brain that develop during childhood and change over time, using genomics to understand how individual cancers can be treated, and working to speed the translation of research findings from the laboratory to the clinical setting. Many ongoing research projects at Washington University are large-scale national or international collaborations. “Our research leads to innovation and brings new knowledge, diagnostic tools and treatments to the bedside,” Lodge says. “This translates to evidence-based best practice, disease prevention and improved clinical outcomes for the patients we serve. In addition, as a top research institution, Washington University is able to attract the best clinicians.” Referring back to Bhayani’s comments about the superspecialization of many Washington University physicians, Lodge notes that involvement in research offers these physicians a deep dive into specific clinical areas. “[They] are often the scientists who are developing the knowledge that forms the basis of these latest and most-effective approaches and therapies,” she says. Yi Zhang, assistant dean for clinical studies, agrees: “Our doctors will only offer a study if they believe it is appropriate for a particular patient. If at any time a doctor believes a clinical study is no longer benefiting a patient or there is a better alternative therapy available, he or she will change the patient’s treatment plan to make sure [he or she is] receiving the best possible care. We also have more than 500 treatment trials available for patients with various cancers.” While research and teaching occur behind the scenes, Washington University Physicians are a staple in the St. Louis area health care arena, and about 25 percent of the group’s patients come from outside the metro area, Bhayani says. Many are pursuing second or third opinions or seeking the group’s ultraspecialized expertise and cutting-edge technologies. Although the hub of Washington University Physicians remains on

Cutting-Edge Research Initiatives Washington University Physicians includes physicianresearchers who spend their time exclusively on studies or who incorporate some laboratory time into their schedules. Dr. Jennifer Lodge, vice chancellor and associate dean for research, describes several of the major initiatives currently underway: the group’s medical campus, its footprint is expanding. “Most people are familiar with Siteman Cancer Center,” Bhayani says. “We’ve expanded our access to patients with our children’s specialty care center out in West County and also our orthopedics center. We’ve built a satellite for Siteman and for the Center for Advanced Medicine in South County.” Bhayani adds that current growth can literally be seen, as construction continues on a new women’s and infant’s center on the academic medical center’s north campus adjacent to the Central West End, new clinical facilities, more beds and additional operating rooms for abdominal and pelvic surgery. He also notes that Washington University Physicians practice at partner facilities across the St. Louis area. “We’re also in positions outside the Central West End, and we’re probably in more than 50 different locations now,” he says. Asked what he would most like people to know about Washington University Physicians, Bhayani concludes: “We’re all over town. Come and discuss our expertise and how we can help you.” To learn more about clinical studies currently seeking volunteers, individuals should go to the Volunteer for Health Research Participant Registry at vfh. wustl.edu or call 314-362-1000. For cancer patients and their families, visit siteman.wustl.edu for available cancer trials.

We certainly have physicians who have a passion for discovering the next great medical treatment, others who have a passion for being at the bedside, others who have a passion for being in the operating room and others who are great teachers. – DR. SAM BHAYANI

DIAN TU TRIAL: This is a major international clinical study, led by Washington University, to evaluate whether drug treatments can prevent the onset of dementia in people who have a genetic predisposition to develop Alzheimer’s at a young age, in their 30s, 40s or 50s. The clinical study is a very large collaboration that is jointly funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Alzheimer’s Association and a consortium of pharmaceutical companies. HUMAN CONNECTOME PROJECT: “We recently finished up a large NIH project to map the neural connections in the human brain using high-resolution imaging,” Lodge says. “We are now embarking on two major projects that will help us understand how these neural connections develop during childhood and how they change as we age.” PERSONALIZED MEDICINE AND GENOMICS: Washington University was a major contributor to the Human Genome Project. “We are now using genomics to understand how individual cancers can be treated,” Lodge says. “This means that rather than treating cancers based on their location in the body, we’re evaluating whether we can more effectively treat cancer based on the genetic makeup of individual patients’ tumors. We are also developing projects that will help us understand how genetic variants in the human genome contribute to disease or good health, with the idea that medical decisions and treatments can be tailored to patients based on their predicted response to a particular treatment or their risk of disease.” CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE AWARD: This is a large award to Washington University that supports its Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences. Physicians partner with other area institutions (BJC HealthCare, Saint Louis University, St. Louis College of Pharmacy and the University of Missouri) to speed the translation of research findings from the laboratory to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

pare No Rib has a new home in Gravois Park. The barbecue and Latin American restaurant, which opened in 2013, moved to new digs in October while its popular brunch pop-up, Egg, transitioned to a full-time restaurant in Benton Park. “Back in my mind, the idea was that if Egg did well enough, we’d split the concepts. And word of mouth for our brunch caught on,” says owner Lassaad Jeliti. Spare No Rib fills the space formerly occupied by Lucky Buddha, with a fresh paint job and a dining room outfitted with new lights and red, yellow and blue hues.

The main dining area seats 60 guests. A spacious back patio and second-story space also are being developed. “The idea for me was not to completely copy what we had at our other location but make it a continuation of the interior design there,” Jeliti says. “We repurposed and reused as many materials as we could.” In the revamped kitchen, the staff cooks staples including the SNR Plate, which features what the menu refers to as “the best of both worlds”: The sampler platter comes with two ribs, two tacos and one side – with options including sweet corn, refried beans and baked macaroni and cheese.

By Mabel Suen “What I’m trying to do is offer tasty and flavorful meals that are quick and not very fussy,” Jeliti says. “We moved the combination of what’s been working for us over to a new home. At the same time, we’re going to use the fact that we are moving to maybe reimagine the menu a little bit.” In the future, Jeliti hopes to offer new items such as tortas as well as an expanded beverage program with in-house flavored liqueurs – think jalapeño-infused tequilas for spicy margaritas and mezcal-based drinks. In the meantime, guests can choose from Spare No Rib’s established menus, which feature house-made salsas,

Story: Middle-aged cartoonist Alison Bechdel, working on her memoir in comic-book form, contemplates her relationship with her late father, Bruce, at two different stages of her life, as a 10-yearold girl and as a freshman in college. She thinks back to her childhood, when she lived with her parents and two brothers in a stately Victorian home in Pennsylvania, which her father had meticulously restored. Bruce juggled three different jobs – as a restorer, as a high school English teacher and as the director of the family funeral home, which his children refer to playfully as the “Fun Home.” Bruce has a dark side, though. He is a closeted gay man who has had affairs with a variety of men, not all of them of consenting age. While “Small Alison” shows artistic promise, she chafes at her father’s insistence on how she should dress and precisely how she should channel her artistic talents. Bruce also seems to lash out at his wife, Helen, for minor and mysterious reasons. As “Medium Alison” becomes aware of her own homosexuality, she writes a letter from college to her parents revealing her sexual identity. Like other times in her life, though, the letter is met with a curious indifference by her father, who seems to prefer an intellectual rather than emotional relationship with her. She’s further jolted when her mother tells her some shocking family secrets that the adult Alison still struggles to understand – secrets that may have led, during Alison’s college freshman year, to Bruce’s untimely death, which she suspects was suicide. Highlights: Fun Home follows its unusual path to musical success with its inaugural appearance in St. Louis, the second stop of the show’s first national tour. With appealing music by Jeanine Tesori and a pensive book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, Fun Home is a comingof-age story told in the modern art form of a graphic novel adapted for the stage. Other Info: Produced by St. Louis’ Fox Theatricals, including Mike Isaacson, Kristin Caskey and Barbara Whitman, along with others such as St. Louisans Terry Schnuck and STAGES’ Jack Lane, Fun Home is a haunting, quiet little tale based on the best-selling 2006 graphic comics memoir by cartoonist Alison Bechdel. Opening originally off-Broadway in 2013, the oneact musical transferred to Broadway in 2015, where it ran for more than 600 performances before closing in September. Last month it began its first national tour. Bruce’s frustrations about his own situation lead to misery for others as well, including his unhappy wife and the sexually inquisitive Alison, who often is coerced by her father into an image she doesn’t want. Throughout the show’s 95 minutes, Robert Petkoff offers a finely etched portrayal delineating Bruce’s rampant misery and its impact on other characters. Kate Shindle is fine as the adult Alison, although she actually has fewer dramatic moments onstage

By Mark Bretz

than Abby Corrigan, who portrays “Medium Alison,” or Alessandra Baldacchino (Carly Gold at certain performances), who plays “Small Alison.” All of them showcase good singing voices and are adept at portraying Alison at three different stages of her life. Susan Moniz does well portraying Helen and her own suffocating life, while Karen Eilbacher is terrific as Joan, “Medium Alison’s” lesbian girlfriend, who is brimming with vitality and self-confidence, in contrast to her muted lover. Pierson Salvador and Lennon Nate Hammond play “Small Alison’s” brothers, Christian and John, while Robert Hager capably assumes several minor roles. Director Sam Gold positions his performers onstage in ways to minimize confusion about what characters are in what time period, mostly by keeping physical distance between adult Alison and the others on the vast Fox stage. David Zinn’s scenic design features several impressive settings, including the “Fun Home” funeral parlor, “Medium Alison’s” dorm and the elegant Bechdel house “on Maple Avenue” as intoned in one of the songs. Most interesting is a wall with a couple of doors that is utilized in a few different scenes. While the music in Fun Home isn’t immediately memorable, it is nonetheless poignant and effective. It’s a musical that might play better in a smaller venue, but the opening night crowd responded to its ending with a standing ovation. Fun Home’s arrival in St. Louis gives local audiences a chance to see how the hard work and creative efforts of local producers led to a Tony Award winner.

Two European cities offer Christmas markets a world away from Black Friday.

C

all me a rebel, but I love leaving home at Christmastime and traveling to locales across the globe. Doing so constitutes a sociology lesson akin to a wedding – interesting to experience even if it’s not your celebration. In Europe, Christmas markets are an old tradition, one I participated in last December. They’ve begun to spread to the U.S. – from New York City to Hermann – but to see them at their peak, take advantage of off-season fares to cross the Atlantic for an unforgettable holiday abroad. Strasbourg, France Strasbourg claims to be the oldest of the Christmas markets, dating back to 1570. It styles itself the “capital of Christmas,” maybe because of nine distinct markets in various locations there, all within a reasonable distance of one another. An easy, hill-less city for strolling, it boasts lots of pedestrian streets and a quiet, efficient tram system. If you’re seeking major atmosphere, you’ve come to the right place. Decorative lights festoon the streets, musicians play nonclichéd tunes and the scent of mulled wine wafts across the crowds. It’s a toss-up which is more interesting: shopping during the day, when the city’s architecture can be admired, or at night, when the fairy-tale feeling richens. The vendors in these markets work in chalets – rustic-looking wood booths with gingerbread

Santon figures for nativity scenes

cutouts decorating the eaves. What do they sell? Certainly the name and setting evoke visions of cunning wooden toys hand-carved by ancient grandfathers sitting beside wood-burning stoves, but most of what’s on offer is massproduced. You’ll find detailed model cars, winter accessories, lotions and soaps, and Christmas decorations ranging from wee glass figurines to huge stars lit from within – popular exterior home decorations for the holiday. Roasted chestnuts can be found at the market near the Strasbourg Opera House, and scattered about are spots serving foie gras sandwiches. Dusk into the evening might be the optimal time for the large market around Place de la Cathédrale. The magic is great then, with warm lights on the cathedral creating a backdrop to the chalets, the crowds and the Christmas decorations. Lots of restaurants and cafés lie nearby, some facing the square. Daytime best suits another particularly charming place, the intimate neighborhood called Petite France, a United Nations World Heritagelisted historical area. Balconies on certain of the half-timbered buildings might have figures of the three kings – one of the two markets here is named for the trio – and a boutique hotel sports chic red-orange Christmas trees outside. The river Ill flows around and through the city and looks particularly nice from Petite France. noel.strasbourg.eu/en

Along the Ill River in Petite France, Strasbourg Strasbourg Cathedral

Montreux, Switzerland Although off the beaten path when it comes to Christmas markets, Montreux makes an exquisite winter setting, with snowy Alps above Lake Geneva’s shore and belle époque buildings throughout town. At night, lights float near that shore, looking like multicolored jellyfish. Its busy market stretches along the lakefront promenade. Although smaller than Strasbourg’s markets, in many ways the offerings at Montreux’s seem more diverse. Also, most of the shoppers seem to be Swiss rather than guests from across Europe and beyond. Leather goods, large fire logs and jewelry appear alongside more-expected items. Food, too, varies and abounds even more, both for gifts – plank-smoked fish created in a chalet, for instance – and for eating on-site

or to go. One entire pavilion, in fact, centers on chowhounds, offering specialties like sausage, sauerkraut, spätzle or rosti, a Swiss dish similar to a potato pancake. Pastries, confections and gorgeous glacé (or candied) fruits that look like jewels similarly abound. Surprisingly, not much Swiss chocolate – a staple found almost everywhere else one shops – retails there. montreuxnoel.com As one of the best things about Christmas markets, visitors can set their own pace and take a break to sit and have coffee or wine, or to people-watch. Just wear warm, comfortable footwear, and prepare for a singular experience.

Confections in Montreux

Strasbourg The easiest way to visit Strasbourg involves flying into Paris and changing planes, or taking a train into the city’s heart. The holiday season marks a very busy time there, with travelers from all over strolling and shopping. Weekends in particular make it hard to find a hotel room. Using Airbnb, I rented a small apartment about three blocks from the cathedral. Had it not been full, I would’ve stayed at Le Bouclier d’Or, a lovely place in the heart of the historic Petite France neighborhood. (1 Rue du Bouclier, 03 88 13 73 55, lebouclierdor.com/en) Delicious food for breakfast, lunch and in-between meals can be found at Salon de The Grande Rue, as can over-the-top décor. The bright-red interior resembles the lining of a jewel box, and the pastry case looks irresistible. (80 Grand Rue, 03 88 32 12 70, salondethegrandrue.fr) Traditional Alsatian food abounds in Strasbourg, like flammenkuche, a thin-crusted tart of cheese, onion and bacon. I also enjoyed a splendid meal at La Hache, a dark, modern bistro across from the Old Customs House that combines contemporary and traditional fare. (11 Rue de la Douane, 03 88 32 24 32, la-hache.com) Beyond shopping, boat tours that show a different side of Strasbourg still operate this time of year, providing a change of pace. (batoramashop.com) Montreux You can easily fly into Geneva and take one of its trains, which run directly from the airport to Montreux, gliding along Lake Geneva. I stayed with friends, but if you’re not so lucky, the very desirable Fairmont le Hotel Montreux Palace overlooks the promenade by the lake. Some rooms even sport balconies. (Avenue Claude Nobs 2, 41 21 962 12 12, fairmont.com/montreux) While Montreux citizens parler français, Switzerland’s food, like its linguistic milieu, is influenced by French, German and Italian cuisine. In the city’s center, La Rouvenaz leans Italian and features excellent seafood; given its popularity, try to reserve a table. (A small hotel also lies upstairs.) (Rue du Marche 1, rouvenaz.ch/en) Shopped-out visitors can enjoy the Chateau de Chillon (about which the British poet Lord Byron wrote), a small-gauge railroad that scales the mountains, as well as a casino with ties to gonzo rocker Frank Zappa and the band Deep Purple. However, Freddy Mercury – who fronted the operatic rock band Queen until his untimely death and whose statue stands on the promenade – ranks as the local musical icon; Mercury loved Montreux, bought property and recorded his last album in the city.

| Preparation | In a food processor, combine almonds and sugars until finely ground. Add chocolate to processor, and chop until fine. (Do not overprocess; chocolate will melt.) Add spices and egg whites, and mix by hand until dough comes together. Chill dough for about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F, and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. On a surface covered with sugar, roll dough to about ½-inch thickness. Cut out cookies with a 2-inch cookie cutter (heart- or star-shaped), and transfer onto prepared pan. Put cookies in oven, and reduce temperature to 325ºF. Bake for 15 minutes or until firm. Be careful not to overbake, or cookies will harden too much. Garnish with a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
