SOCIETY DURING THIS SEASON OF GIVING, I’VE ALREADY FOUND MYSELF ON the receiving end of many a thoughtful, benevolent gift. Most were given as holiday presents; while others were a bit more complicated: They were items given as thank-you gifts. For instance, I recently gave one of my most cherished friends (let’s call her JB) a gift as a thank-you for helping organize a photo shoot for us. Well, JB then turns around and sends me a fairly substantial gift card as a thank-you for my thank-you. In another example, my friend, LA, sent over a floral centerpiece to thank me for something I’ve done for her—which, of course, means that I’ll probably need to send LA another gesture of my appreciation. See how this can easily get out of control? When does it stop, you ask? Well, that’s where I’m not so sure. I guess it’s a good problem to have. In this day and age of abbreviated tweets, texts and emails, it’s nice to know that there still are people out there who believe in the fine art of appreciation and gratitude. Thank you!

irst it rained, and then it froze, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of these St. Louis civic and business leaders who chose to sleep outside on a sheet of cardboard for one night to give more than 2,000 homeless and at-risk youth a voice. For the first time in almost four years, the lights are on at the PLANETARIUM at the SAINT LOUIS SCIENCE CENTER. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, a state-of-the-art LED system has been installed that displays the building’s iconic shell in stunning colors on a nightly basis. The new system uses 70 percent less energy and requires little or no maintenance.

In honor of her grandfather’s 90th birthday, a 9-year-old Ladue girl decided to go big—bigger than the pair of socks her mom suggested she get for ‘D-dad’ as a present. Instead, CAMPBELL PERKINS organized a walk in honor of her D-dad, who has Alzheimer’s disease. On Nov. 23, more than 65 people showed up on the MICDS track in chilly weather to support Campbell, whose goal was to raise $1,000 to benefit Campbell Perkins with her D-dad, Don the ALZHEIMER’S Lambert ASSOCIATION ST. LOUIS CHAPTER. Campbell planned the event on her own, creating and distributing flyers, securing donations and even selling ‘Dollars for D-dad’ bracelets. She also convinced local businesses to donate food and drinks for the event. By the way, Campbell not only surpassed her monetary goal, she surpassed it to the nth degree, raising more than $10,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Campbell is a student at Churchill Center & School. Kudos to you, young lady!

The community recently held its traditional Hanukkah Dinner—which Schneiderman says was delightful—as well as a Breakfast with Santa and Holiday Affair event. Engulfing the campus in holiday spirit are the lights and décor, which resident Donna Ward says appeared while she was away for Thanksgiving. “We came home, and the trees were up and my lights were outside our patio door—and I didn’t have to do any of it,” says Ward. “I love it. Snacks such as mulled cider, hot cocoa and holiday cookies will be served throughout this family-friendly fête. In preparation for Christmas, dinner will be served on the 24th, followed by a Christmas Day Dinner Buffet—both with live music to set the holiday mood. To applaud 2013 and ring in 2014, a dinner is planned on New Year’s Eve, as well as a party and, of course, Champagne toast. “[Last year] they handed out little hats and

noise-makers—it was a real party!” Ward says. Schneiderman echoes similar memories from the event, explaining the New Year’s Eve celebration as a festive mob of people with goodies and dancing. uxurious new guest cottages, a lavish outdoor pavilion and sweeping vineyard are coming to The Gardens at Malmaison and The Studio Inn. The $1.35-million expansion is set to be completed by next summer on the adjacent event venues in the serene setting of St. Albans. “We are eager to see this dream come to fruition and look forward to welcoming guests next year,” notes owner Datra Herzog, who says the upscale project has been years in the making. The new development means the venues soon will have room to accommodate even more guests for weddings, weekend getaways, corporate retreats and other special events. Plans for more lodging at the historic Gardens at Malmaison fine-dining and event destination will complement six existing suites at The Studio Inn. The Gardens’ four new stone and wood cottages will sleep two to four guests and feature fireplaces, efficiency kitchens and private patios to enjoy the spectacular surroundings, Herzog explains. “Families want to celebrate and have overnight accommodations nearby. Our venues are the perfect getaway

destination, all within minutes of the St. Louis metropolitan area.” Construction on a new permanent outdoor pavilion for private parties also is underway on the garden grounds. Additionally, a complete kitchen remodel and expansion will increase capacity for special events. Reservations for the new additions will become available 60 days before the renovation’s completion, Herzog says. In addition to the properties’ new accommodations and amenities, the expansion boasts plans for a 1-acre winery on the hill below The Studio Inn, a charming, European-style bed and breakfast and event venue. The vineyard is expected to produce 6,000 bottles of wine annually, with the first planting set for this spring and mature grapes available in three to five years. The Gardens currently private labels some of its wine with St. James Winery. A wine cellar, wine dinner space and a new commercial kitchen to accommodate larger functions also are in the works. “The Studio Inn has always had an

Usually, the first thing a bride-to-be wants to discuss with a floral designer is color. • White is the classic wedding choice—elegant and pure. There is nothing more exquisite than a flawless bouquet of white roses or peonies. • Pink is a feminine, romantic choice. The paler, blushing tones are refined and lovely; while the other end of the spectrum—hot pinks and raspberry tones—are bold and exciting. • Blue is not a color often in the flower world. But the choices we do have are cool, serene and classy. Grape hyacinths in the spring, hybrid delphinium and corn flowers in the summer, and now there is almost-year-round availability of blue hydrangea. • Purples keep popping up every couple of years as the color of the year. Purples run from dramatically dark to eternal when in shades of lavender and lilac. Purples tend not to wear their color after sunset: The dark tones go black and the subtleties of the lighter shades become lost. • Hate it or love it, yellow is cheerful and positive. You have to be careful with yellow flowers regarding fabric and skin tones. When they work, the results are charming, youthful and happy. • Another love-it-or-hate-it color, orange can be rich and fiery. The soft melon tones are stunning and mix so well with blues and greens. • Red, the color of passion, always is a great match for the intense sunlight of a summer day. Some cooler red tones look wonderful in winter, especially at holiday time with evergreen and holly. • Green is my most favorite of all colors. The tones run from the deep hunter green to the almost garish Kelly green to the sweet softness of a light, minty green. Foliages always have been green; but more and more green flowers are coming into the floral markets every day: callas, roses, cymbidium and dendrobium orchids. We all love the freshness of viburnum (or ‘snowballs,’ as we called them as kids). And then there is the old standby: the always fresh-looking and almost always available, green hydrangea. We used to try hard to use the old color wheel to complement and contrast. These days, a good designer can make any choice you pick look exciting and alive. Try to be open to some new ideas to go along with your blue wedding (or pink, yellow, etc.), and you’ll be surprised and delighted by what’s been done in commercially grown flowers in the expert hands of a seasoned designer. Cindy Vargo: The Decker of Halls

OLIDAY TRADITIONS IN ST. LOUIS ARE SO established that it might not even surprise you that we have a ‘head elf,’ if you will, in our midst. We all have our cherished things to do this time of the year: taking in the Symphony at Powell Hall, a carriage ride through Tilles Park, or maybe ice-skating at Steinberg Rink in Forest Park. But my favorite starts with a brisk walk on Washington Boulevard toward Grand Boulevard along Strauss Park: You might hear the hum of jazz, and laughter and lively conversation, or the sound of the traffic officer’s whistle piercing the chill of the night, but it’s the lights of the Fox Theatre that beckon. My family and me, dressed in our holiday best, pass below the warmth of the heat lamps under the marquee and through the golden doors into the lobby. It is always magical to walk into The Fabulous Fox at Christmas time. The Fox is overwhelming in splendor any time of the year, but adorned with ornaments of the season, it’s even more of a wonder. This year, snowflakes of light are falling inside the lobby as a magnificent Tannenbaum rises up from top of the grand stairs. And as we take our seats, the theater is abuzz in anticipation of the curtain’s rise. In here, the holiday ambience is but an accessory to the grandeur: the immense 2-and-a-half ton chandelier glistens with Swarovski crystals, the Wurlitzer organ pipes out a Christmas song, and the seemingly ancient Siamese Byzantine figures engulf us. Waiting in the wings, just off stage and taking it all in, is Cindy Vargo. “My mother’s maiden name is Noel, and my grandfather is Rudolph Noel, so maybe it’s in my blood,” Cindy says. “I’ve always loved Christmas; it’s my favorite time of the year.” Her official job title is director of sales for Fox Associates, but she also is the one in charge of making sure the theater glows with that extra holiday charm. It was never in the job description when Vargo started at the Fox more than a decade ago; but now, it’s a year-round part of what she does. “I will tell you, I’m thinking holiday all year long; and sometime in July, I turn on the Christmas music to get myself into the spirit.” This year, planning started in February with lobbying for budgets and considering a five-year plan on “serious financial commitments” for new decorations. While Vargo didn’t say how much, the number is easily in the tens of thousands, including planned additions for the years ahead. Vargo spearheaded the effort to phase out the Victorianthemed holiday elements that everyone agreed were just ‘worn out.’ “We decided to keep it crisp and clean, and give ourselves a fair palette that we can work from each year and build on.” Vargo explains the new decorations are classically traditional and are intended not to take away

from the splendor of the Fox, while keeping in mind the expectations of holiday theater patrons. “For many families, the Fox is a tradition. They come here all dressed up to see a holiday show. And because we’re part of these family traditions, we take that very seriously—that’s why we put so much attention and love into it.” Vargo’s love for the Fox started when she was a drama student at Granite City High School. She remembers her class selling candy bars to raise enough money to buy tickets to see Cats; they sat in the top balcony. Vargo caught the theatre bug and studied acting in college; but when she saw how even the most gritty and determined of her classmates still struggled despite their talent, she knew her best work would be behind the scenes. Now, Vargo has one of the best views of the world of theatre that anyone could have—a part of the amazement that happens every time the footlights come on and the stage bursts to life. She has even more of a special connection to the Fox during

the holiday season. “I go back to that parent who is holding a child’s hand and watching that child’s eyes when they step into a place they’ve never been before, or maybe they only come once a year and live it vicariously as they come through the doors.” As we talk, we sit at a table at the top of the garland-lined grand staircase. Vargo has a spool of red ribbon in her hands and is instinctively making it into a bow as she speaks. My 7-year-old is sitting with us, mesmerized as she is treated to milk and cookies from the Fox Club’s kitchen. Vargo remembers bringing her own son here when he wasn’t much more than a toddler, and again recognizing the Fox’s role in the St Louis holiday landscape. “It’s all about creating those memories and traditions that you pass on to your kids.” And, as it always happens, when the orchestra begins to play and the actors fill the stage, new holiday memories are formed, thanks in part to the head elf who is working in the wings.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the PNC Wealth Management Christmas Price Index (CPI). The report, which was launched by the chief economist at a PNC predecessor bank, evaluates the cost of items from the classic carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas, from

12 drummers drumming ($2,854.80) right down to the partridge in a pear tree ($15 and $184, respectively.) Maurice Quiroga, managing director and executive VP of PNC in St. Louis, says the company gets prices from national chains and professional performance companies to calculate the cost. Prices for the partridges, doves, geese and swans came from the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, while prices for ladies dancing and lords a leaping came from the Pennsylvania Ballet and PHILADANCO. A national jewelry chain supplied the cost of the five 14-karat gold rings. While many of these sources are based in the northeast, Quiroga says that because they are national institutions, the prices are aligned with those across the country. While many items remained the same as last year, 11 pipers piping and 12 drummers drumming both saw 2.9-percent increases in 2013. Four calling birds will set back consumers $600, 15 percent more than last year. The price for eight maids a milking, the only unskilled laborers on the report, has stayed the same since 2009, the last time the federal minimum wage increased. Those in the market for pear trees will save almost $6 compared to last year, but the savings stop there. Last-minute shoppers turning to the Internet will pay $12,300 more than those shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, Quiroga says, for additional expenses and shipping. For a truly lavish holiday, true loves who buy all 364 gifts repeated in the verses will shell out $114,651.18. “Prices are increasing because of supply and demand,” Quiroga says. “While there are exceptions to given years, what’s most interesting about the history of the CPI is that over the years, the increases have averaged to 2.9 percent, exactly the same number as the U.S. inflation index. So we’re right in line with the index.” As for next year, Quiroga predicts that 2014 will look similar to 2013, but with less aggressive increase rates as the economy begins to slow down and anticipation for the federal reserve to start raising rates increases. espite the immense variety of gowns being prepared for the Veiled Prophet Ball, each of the Maids of Honor will have exactly one thing in common this year, according to area dress shop owners: They will all look fabulous. “It’s very important to make sure every person—whether they’re a maid, a mother or a guest—look as beautiful as they can, whether they’re a size 4 or a 24, and to make them feel special,” says Paulette Friedman of Special Occasions, about preparing for the ball. Colors, fabrics and styles range all over the map this year, with each maid and all of the guests reflecting their own sense of style. “The most important thing is to look beautiful and feel good in what you’re wearing.”

Laying your eyes on a maid’s gown before its debut is quite a tricky task—in fact, many of the families request that the shop owners cover the mannequin displaying their gown whenever it’s not being worked on, says Marylyn Simpson of R & M Designs. It’s a little like seeing the bride’s dress before the wedding, we’re told. However, we did get a few details to tide us over until the big day, Dec. 21. Whereas 20 years ago, the styles for the maids were very structured, many of the debutantes now see it as a way to express their personality, notes Nancy Lehtman of Distinctions. “The girls are not as married to the typical ball gown. We’ve done some interesting fabrics and colors this year, and it’s a lot of fun.” She adds that her store has sold gowns for maids

For the ladies in red, bronze, silver and also emerald green this year—with jewel tones being prominent. “It’s any color under the rainbow. But purple is a no-no for the girls who are walking,” because that color is reserved for the Veiled Prophet himself, she says. Many of the stores report more orders for gowns with straps this year than in the past, as well as slightly less glitz. But a relative dearth of rhinestones hasn’t stopped the creativity, our sources say. Marylyn and Connie Simpson of R & M Designs say attentive guests will notice a gown with 144 buttons running down the back, and another with red silk satin and red leather suede. They add that several gowns incorporate stiff horsehair to create a sculptural effect. “It’s almost like an Alexander McQueen exhibit,” Connie Simpson says. When they begin their shopping, some of the debutantes have a very specific plan for their look, while others have only a vague idea, says

But in the end, each one will be unique: “I just made an appointment for 2014, and she’s not the first one,” Brauer says. “They know that once a dress or style has been picked, I remove it from the floor.” Often, the maids choose a gown from a couture bridal designer, such as Carolina Herrera or Vera Wang, she notes. The store has worked out special deals with the designers to have the gowns produced in color. “You want them to feel as unique as you can, within the realm of reality, and this year that’s really the case.”

The maids aren’t the only attendees of the Veiled Prophet Ball who go all out with their style choices, local store owners say. In a nod to their daughters’ big night, mothers often choose a dress that won’t compete for the limelight, but still shows off their style, notes Nancy Lehtman of Distinctions. “Some wear traditional ball gown-style dresses, and others are looking for a sleek, couture look. It depends on their personality and sense of style.” This year, many of the on-trend mothers, ladies of honor and former queens will be wearing made-to-order dresses, often with a bolero jacket featuring ruffles or a high collar, says Paulette Friedman of Special Occasions. Fabrics range from lace to silk, and “some of the mothers wanted a little shimmer or sparkle when they’re walking. They feel special and look fabulous.”

RAVEL INCREASES DURING THE HOLIdays, coinciding with cold and flu season. Being cooped up in a plane with strangers coughing and sneezing their way through the flight, along with the added stress of travel and its potentially dampening effect on the immune system, can leave you vulnerable to illness. Not only are your fellow passengers’ germs health hazards, but changes in air pressure, humidity and oxygen concentration in the cabin can exacerbate chronic medical problems, says Dr. Divya Chauhan, a family physician at Creve Coeur Family Medicine and on staff at St. Luke’s Hospital. Spraying planes with chemicals like insecticides and de-icing agents also can leach some vapors into the cabin, potentially aggravating some conditions. However, your greatest threat may be sitting right behind you. “While we frequently hear about stale air circulating throughout the plane, most transmitted illness has been found to come from persons within two rows of the air traveler,” says Karen Moore, coordinator of the Adult-Gero Nurse

Practitioner program at Saint Louis University and an expert in travel health for BJC Travelers’ Health Service. “The challenge is that we, as travelers, have no control over the health of those around us, so good attention to hand hygiene and cough hygiene are very important.” Frequent hand-washing, coughing into one’s bent elbow (instead of hands) and avoiding hand-to-face contact will help reduce spread of communicable diseases. “Airborne and other over-the-counter products have long made claims of preventing illness and boosting immunity in the absence of any supporting data,” notes Dr. Richard Ihnat, a physician specializing in internal medicine with the SSM Medical Group at St. Mary’s Health Center. “Airborne, in particular, paid a $30 million fine for deceptive advertising related to their unsubstantiated claims. The best ways to stay healthy during the winter are the basic things like eating a balanced diet, exercising and getting enough sleep. Also, receiving a flu shot each year can reduce your chance of getting influenza by 70 to 80 percent.”

Chauhan notes that some especially susceptible travelers may want to use a medical-grade face mask to cover the mouth and nose. “You can also use your own pillows, blankets and headsets, if possible. Those items get cleaned regularly, but there is no way to know if germs may be embedded in the material,” she adds. Medical professionals also cite the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when on extended flights. Sitting in one position for hours increases the risk of a blood clot forming in the leg and then potentially traveling to the heart or lungs. Continued on page 59

S BLOOD FLOWS INTO AND out of the heart’s chambers, it passes through tiny biological doorways that ensure everything flows in the proper direction at appropriate intervals. These doorways are heart valves— tissue flaps that open to let blood in and then close to prevent it from flowing backwards. The system works great unless the valve becomes too narrow or doesn’t seal properly. Valves that fail to work properly can restrict blood flow or allow it to ‘regurgitate’ back into the previous chamber. Aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve) and mitral regurgitation (a leaky mitral valve) are the most common heart valve diseases. Chest pain, swelling, shortness of breath and fainting are among the symptoms that can occur.

Hill-Stead: One Woman’s Vision

NCE IN A GREAT WHILE, you stumble onto a story that is just so full of wonder and intrigue, that you have to share it: There once lived a woman born to a privileged family in the Midwest town of Salem, Ohio, who dreamed of a bucolic life and career out East. Her father was an industrialist and renowned art collector, affording her the opportunity to leave home and to be educated at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Conn. Preferring her grandmother’s name to her own birth name, she officially changed it at age 20. She went on to become the first licensed architect in both New York and Connecticut; and in 1926, was appointed to the American Institute of Architects Fellowship. On May 7, 1915, she survived the torpedo attack on the luxury ocean liner Lusitania—her traveling companion and maid did not. The following year, at age 49, she married a diplomat she had met 16 years earlier. Continued on page46

Continued from page 45 Who is this mysterious woman, you ask? She was Effie Brooks Theodate Pope Riddle. Born Effie Brooks Pope, Theodate was her grandmother’s name. The Hill-Stead mansion in Farmington, Conn., is the home she designed for her parent’s retirement. Theodate thought it best that her parents retire in the East so that they could be closer to ‘culture,’ so to speak. Hill-Stead, a Colonial Revival house that originally sat on 250 acres, encompasses one of the most comprehensive collections of any family home that has been preserved as a museum. The art collection is one of the finest examples of its day: Masterpieces by Carriere, Cassatt, Degas, Israels, Manet, Monet, Nicholson, Chavannes and Whistler all hang on the walls of this country manse. Theodate’s father, Alfred, made friends with many of the artists he collected, and he made it clear that he wanted only their best efforts to be included in his collection. It is extremely rare for a collection not only to remain intact after this period of time, but that it still is hanging in the original home in their original location. Theodate inherited the home from her parents; and when she passed away in 1946, she stated that the home, its contents and the grounds would be maintained “for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.” As a result, the collection of decorative arts, which includes silver, porcelain, photographs, sculpture, furniture, linens, clothing, works on paper, as well as decades of correspondence and records for the property, have all been carefully and meticulously curated and preserved along with her father’s art collection. Today, the grounds at Hill-Stead encompass 152 acres, a 33,000-square-foot house, a farmhouse, a carriage garage now used as a theater, a barn and several other buildings.

The gardens are extensive and noteworthy. Landscape architect Warren Manning consulted on the original designs. And Beatrix Farrand, one of the most accomplished female landscape architects of the time, was asked to rework the estate’s Sunken Garden, which she did. It was restored in 1980 to her design. Theodate had a clear vision for her life, embracing every experience that came her way and making every effort to leave this world a better place than she found it. Well done! Missouri Botanical Garden horticulturist Jason Delany also has found many African calla lilies to be quite hardy in St. Louis, with ‘Picasso’, a cream variety with purple shading. Most varieties have inherited some hardiness, along with many luscious colors, from Z. rehmannii. The species Z. ellotiana and Z. aethiopica are not as hardy, but may be easily lifted for winter basement storage. All callas prefer perpetually damp soils. The African-Inspired Bulb Border South Africa is famous for more than 1,000 species of bulbs. Continued from page47 tiny species and F1 hybrids are much more suited for our Missouri gardens than the gaudy, overly common funeral glads. Jason loves Gladiolus papillio, a diminutive, yet gorgeous, autumnflowering species with greenish-bronze and brownish-red hooded flowers on graceful, arching stems. ‘Ruby’ is a papillio variety with more traditional-looking, delicate flowers. Both like well-drained soils. My herb garden includes a hardy clump of society garlic (Tulbaghia capensis from the Cape of Good Hope) and the perennial border boasts Crocosmia ‘Lucifer,’ an African garden devil that occasionally gets out of hand. Fire lilies, Cyrtanthus mackenii and hybrids, seem adapted to our winters, but they are still under evaluation. Jason recommends planting them 3- to 4-inches deep in the spring and under full sun. The slender, tubular flowers are very fragrant and come in selections of white, pink, red, orange and vivid yellow, with first bloom in late spring and a repeat show into the summer. For bloom during the hottest months, try summer hyacinth, Galtonia candicans. It provides lots of flowers from July into August. Welldraining soil and full sun are all they need to provide yearly bloom on 3-foot stalks.

Do You Have ‘Bulbs’ in Your Garden? Gardeners tend to lump all plants with underground storage organs into the catch-all label ‘bulbs.’ In the broad sense, this category includes many different kinds of plants that have fleshy storage organs and a dormant period in their life cycles. It can be very confusing for the novice gardener to learn that a bulb may not be a bulb after all! Here is a short breakdown of the different kinds of plants that are lumped into this group: True bulbs, like onions, tulips, lilies and garlic, have roots only at the base attached to an internal structure called a basal plate. Above that are very fleshy layers which become leaves and wrap around the meristem or growing tip. If you slice a bulb, you will see many layers or rings. All bulbs have a top and bottom, so they must be planted in the correct orientation to help them grow properly. Corms are similar to bulbs in that they have a top and bottom. Roots come out the bottom, but a corm is made from fat, fleshy stem tissue and may have multiple meristems or growing points. If you cut open a corm, you will find no rings. Common corms include the African gladiolus and freesia, crocus and crocosmia. True tubers contain no basal plate. They originate from stem or hypocotyl tissues. They will have no rings when cut open. Common tubers include caladium, begonia, oxalis and the regular

white kitchen potato. To divide them, the entire organ is sliced into pieces, each with a growing point we commonly call ‘eyes.’ Tuberous roots are storage organs that grow from fleshy root tissue and must have a stem attached in order to sprout out. They do not have rings. Typical tuber-rooted plants are dahlias, daylilies and sweet potatoes. Rhizomes are specialized stems that grow sideways underground or along the soil surface. Popular rhizomes include iris, ginger and—believe it or not—bamboo! To be a successful bulb grower (using the broadest sense of the word), one must recognize the type of dormancy and climate that individual plants require. Many of our temperate bulbs require winter chilling to complete their dormancy cycle. Forced flowers like Narcissus and tulips will not flower unless they have had a chilling cycle of refrigeration. But if you chill tropical bulbs, you can kill them. Most of the African bulbous plants require a dry season for their dormancy. If you keep them wet year-round when growing them as houseplants, you may destroy them. There are others that are evergreen year-round, and might have the structure of a bulb, but don’t have regular dormancy. Plants that may keep their leaves year-round would include clivia and agapanthus. Continued on page 60

Lynn Andel’s mantra is the same as her perfume: a happy heart. Andel, a Laura McCarthy Real Estate agent, says she enters every situation with a happy heart, a sense of humor and fierce dedication. Well, if the Golden Globe nominations are any indication—and they usually are—it’s shaping up to be a strange awards season. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced their picks for the best films, madefor-TV movies, television series and mini-series of 2013. Everyone seems to agree there were a few surprises, a few shocks, and more than a few snubs.

OK, now we’re talking. I have actually only seen one of these films to date, Nebraska, and I can assure you it is neither a musical nor a comedy, but who’s counting? I have high, high expectations for American Hustle and Wolf. Inside Llewyn Davis is proving to be the Coen brothers’ big comeback; and Her is the story of a heartbroken man who becomes caught up with a female entity created by an advanced operating system. I’m getting a Lars and the Real Girl vibe.

BLAKE LIVELY AND LEIGHTON MEESTER Rumors are flying that the two Gossip Girl co-stars no longer are on speaking terms. It seems Leighton is totes peeved at her BFF because Leighton was all kinds of supportive when Blake married Ryan Reynolds; and now that Leighton is engaged to BF Adam Brody, Blake is blowing up her phone, throwing all kinds of shade about their relationship by saying Adam’s all NBA when it comes to women. I just don’t understand that. No, literally, I don’t understand that.

ONE DIRECTION After being mobbed on the East Coast, the heartthrobs found some peace and quiet in the unlikeliest of places: Sesame Street. The boys stopped by to visit with Big Bird and film an episode of the show. In an unrelated story, a PBS day-player was assaulted walking to a shoot last week as six 12-year-old girls trampled him and then deftly slipped ninja-style into the Big Bird costume he was carrying.

KEVIN FEDERLINE The former backup dancer and more notably, Britney Spears’ sperm donor, is preparing for his sixth child. You read right: Baby No. 6 should be arriving early next spring. Federline has two children with girlfriend Shar Jackson, two with ex-wife Spears, and this will be his second with wife Victoria Prince. It’s kind of wholesome and traditional, if you stop to think about it. His kids already are going into their father’s family business: famous for nothing.

Best Motion Picture, Drama 12 Years a Slave Gravity Captain Phillips Rush Philomena Right off the bat, eyebrows are raised. If these five films were showing at the cineplex, I think I would stay home. Not that they are not good movies, I just wouldn’t see any of them twice. 12 Years a Slave is a brilliantly acted film with mediocre direction and a gruesome true story. Gravity is profound and symbolic; but at the end of the day, it’s Sandy Bullock floating around in space, pondering. Captain Phillips is a Davidand-Goliath tale with Goliath winning. Rush is a forgettable story about an unremarkable racing rivalry. And Philomena is a painful story of forced adoption wrapped in the cheery guise of adventure comedy. The big snub here was Lee Daniel’s The Butler. Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy Nebraska American Hustle The Wolf of Wall Street Inside Llewyn Davis Her

Ejiofor has been called a lock since the film previewed, and Elba’s moving performance will certainly garner attention in the wake of Mandela’s recent passing. For the rest: McConaughey delivers his standard cocky Texan; Hanks, his thoughtful father-figure. Robert Redford has one line of dialogue as the sole actor in his almost two-hour film, prompting the question, if an actor doesn’t speak in a film nobody saw, can he win an award? Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical Bruce Dern, Nebraska Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street Christian Bale, American Hustle Oscar Isaac, Inside Llewyn Davis Joaquin Phoenix, Her This branch of the acting tree seems to eclipse its more highly regarded brother. Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine Sandra Bullock, Gravity Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks Judi Dench, Philomena Kate Winslet, Labor Day It’s difficult to imagine anyone but Blanchett walking away with the award; her modern-day Blanch DuBois is haunting. That, and the three Brits sort of cancel each other out—and Bullock’s performance fades with each passing day.

Hannah Senesh was born in 1921, the only daughter of a Hungarian journalist/playwright and his wife. An experience with antiSemitism in her early teens awakened her interest in Zionism. Following her education, she lived on various kibbutzes in Palestine, where the mundane chores she was assigned proved tedious. Learning about a military unit being organized by the British to parachute behind enemy lines, Hannah enlisted as one of just three women in the 37-soldier outfit. After months of fighting in Yugoslavia, she entered Hungary, where she was immediately captured. Subsequently she was imprisoned, interrogated and executed for treason at age 23 in November 1944, leaving a legacy of insightful poetry, admirable courage and a passion and commitment to Zionism.

HIGHLIGHTS Playwright David Schechter’s one-woman show is a beautifully textured and superbly told tale, as evidenced in the richly rewarding presentation now being performed by New Jewish Theatre. Director Kat Singleton and actress Shanara Gabrielle capture the vibrant essence of this singular young woman, whose exploits live on in Israeli history and literature. Schechter’s drama, developed in collaboration with Lori Wilner and adapted from Senesh’s own diaries and poems, is absorbing theater throughout its 90 minutes of stage time, hauntingly etched by Gabrielle. Bracketing her portrayal of the fiery freedom fighter is a pair of meticulous interpretations of Hannah’s surviving mother, Catherine.

Jimmy Betts adds his own chilling touch in a brief scene as a Nazi soldier who captures Hannah and brings her to prison in the starkest light of reality. Singleton’s direction is sure and steady as she carefully orchestrates Gabrielle’s balletic effort, bolstered by the work’s affecting compositions.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy Meryl Streep, August: Osage County Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Enough Said Amy Adams, American Hustle Julie Delpy, Before Midnight Greta Gerwig, Francis Ha This category gets my hackles up. Yes, Meryl Streep is the grand dame of the American cinema, but if you can’t make a better dysfunctional family dra-medy than Terms of Endearment (and you probably can’t), then don’t bother. Enough Said was an awful movie and Julia Louis-Dreyfus played menopausal Elaine. Greta Gerwig is delightful in a film nobody will see; and Julie Delpy is now finally getting noticed as this romantic trilogy comes to an end. As if the HFPA didn’t need another reason for Adams to be the lock here: This is her fifth nomination.

Herbie’s Vintage ’72

Simply Classic SINCE ITS BEGINNINGS IN THE EARLY 1970S, Herbie’s Vintage ’72 (originally Balaban’s) has been a dining destination for locals and visitors alike, anchoring the northern end of Euclid Avenue in the Central West End. The current incarnation boasts plenty of ancillary amenities like private dining and a cigar club, but regardless of the additional accoutrements, at Herbie’s, the food still is very much the focus. Herbie’s has long been one of our favorite rooms, equal parts comfort and class, and provides an atmosphere that’s amenable for a last-minute dinner or celebrating a special occasion. The enclosed ‘sidewalk cafe’ section provides good people-watching opportunities and allows for a quasi-patio experience all year round. For dinner service, two menus are available: one featuring larger plates and the bistro menu, which offers more casual fare. We opted for the main dining-room menu this time around. There also are plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian items to be had, as well. A cup of the soup of the day started us off, a mild Tomato Soup ($4) that was both simple and delicious, and a tasty antidote to the blustery winter weather. It’s hard to find a restaurant that hasn’t incorporated kale into their salad selection, though Herbie’s Kale Salad ($9) is a real standout from the crowded field, thanks to the subtle crunch of pumpkin seeds, shaved carrot and radish, and a mild miso vinaigrette. Each element is allowed to shine through, and the dressing is incorporated judiciously and treated as an ingredient in and of itself, not an afterthought.

The Wellington of Beef on the Herbie’s menu is almost legendary, likewise, the Lobster Mac & Cheese. On our most recent visit, it was definitely tempting to get reacquainted with both, but two other dishes begged for attention: the BaconWrapped Quail ($28) and the Peppercorn and Coriander Encrusted Yellowfin Tuna ($29). There has been something of a bacon backlash among some chefs and diners of late, due to its overexposure on many menus. But the use of bacon in this quail dish is restrained, with just enough salt used to counter the fig glaze on the perfectly roasted birds. The two small quail were big on flavor and surprisingly filling, given their diminutive size. The tuna came with bok choy and edamame, and a green pea miso. Just a touch of heat was provided, courtesy of some soy wasabi. The crust was just spicy enough to bring out the subtleties of the fish without overwhelming it. These two dishes provide a good example of the breadth of the Herbie’s menu, which runs the gamut from traditional European fare to American comfort food to lighter Asian-inspired offerings. Simple and classic are two of the defining characteristics of the cuisine at Herbie’s. Case in point, our dessert choice, Haley’s Cupcake ($9). This red velvet delight is named after a former employee (according to our server), and is the epitome of a time-honored classic, just like the restaurant itself.

Shop and Savor, St. Louis-Style

HERE’S A NEW KITCHEN TOOL ON store shelves this holiday season that should excite the St. Louis home chef. It’s not a fancy food processor or even a durable, super-useful knife. Co-authored by chef Clara Moore and Ladue News food writer Matt Sorrell, Shop Like a Chef is a guide for St. Louis food lovers to local products and produce, gourmet and specialty foods, and so much more in communities and neighborhoods throughout the city and county. “With this book, I wanted to encourage people to not only cook, but to get out and enjoy the shopping part of the process,” Moore says. “I think it’s important for people to think about where they are sourcing their ingredients.” Sorrell, who met Moore through his coverage of the St. Louis restaurant scene while she was working as executive chef at Local Harvest Café & Catering, points out that the guide is presented in a user-friendly format that looks at neighborhoods, equipment, types of foods and ethnicities. “We say in the introduction that this is not intended to be a comprehensive guide or history,” explains Sorrell, who wrote the Neighborhoods chapter of the book. “We are not the Missouri Historical Society by any means. But Shop Like a Chef is meant to give people an entry point to discovering our different neighborhoods. This book opens up a whole new world of creativity, in my opinion, because Clara goes into so much detail as far as all the different, little markets around town.” And for two individuals who were both born and raised in St. Louis and who thought they knew a lot about the local food landscape, this project proved there was still plenty to learn, Sorrell says. “Working on this book got me out, and I found that there are

many communities, like in North City and North County where there are so many things happening in cool, little neighborhoods—just off the main drags. Typically, when we get into our cars, we think all we have to do is drive down Manchester and pop in here and pop in there. We’re not used to making that left turn and going somewhere else.” Moore, who has been cooking since age 17 when she started her career at Duff’s, also includes a good variety of her own original recipes in the guide to provide inspiration in the kitchen. “I brainstormed about what I thought would be approachable to the home cook, but at the same time, would maybe

push them a little bit beyond that meatloaf boundary line,” she notes. With so much useful information, a good question might be: Where should this book be kept? In the kitchen, or in the car? Sorrell has that answer: “Just the other day, someone told me that their plan was to keep their copy in their glove compartment, so that when they are out and about and thinking, Hey I need to get something to make for dinner, then they could take a look at where they are and grab the book. But then there’s the recipe component—I guess people will need to buy two!” he ends with a laugh.

CLARA MOORE’S CRAWFISH STUFFING (a Midwestern take on the traditional oyster stuffing)

INGREDIENTS: 10 c crusty French bread, cubed 7 T unsalted butter 2 T bacon fat or olive oil 4 shallots, thinly sliced 6 stalks of celery, thinly sliced 1 lb crawfish tail meat (raw or precooked) 2 c chicken or vegetable stock 1/3 c dry vermouth 2 T fresh sage, chopped 2 T fresh thyme, chopped 1 t Tabasco or other hot sauce Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Arrange bread cubes on a baking sheet and place in oven for about 20 minutes. Put five tablespoons of butter, plus the bacon fat or olive oil, in a large skillet on medium heat; add shallots and celery, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are soft. Add crawfish tail meat to pan. If precooked, simply warm the meat; if raw, cook until bright red. Add sage, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook for a minute to release the flavors of the herbs, then add stock, hot sauce and dry vermouth. Toss mixture in a bowl with the bread cubes. Let stand for 15 minutes and raise oven temperature to

400 degrees. Grease an oven-proof pan with one tablespoon of butter. Transfer the stuffing into the pan and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes. Melt remaining one tablespoon of butter. After removing the stuffing from the oven, take off the foil and drizzle the butter on top. Bake for 30 more minutes. Serves 10 to 12.

Artificial valves are either made of metal or animal tissue and can be placed in the heart via catheter. Prevention of heart valve disease follows the same recommendations as prevention of other types of cardiovascular diseases. “So many of my patients are overweight or obese,” Jacobs notes. “In my office, I talk to patients most often about weight loss and salt intake. We only need about 2,000 milligrams of salt daily, but people get much more than that. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure and stiffening of the arteries, which can contribute to heart valve disease.” If you experience symptoms, don’t simply assume they’re due to aging, Sonn notes. See your primary-care physician for a physical exam and referral to specialists, if needed.
