World-Famous Murals
The 42 murals that adorn buildings throughout Chemainus are more than works of art. They tell the stories of the town and its people... and there’s more to tell. Four murals will be added to the collection this year, bringing that total up to 46. Ever since the early 1980s, artists have been painting on Chemainus walls, often using historical photographs as their inspiration, depicting people and activities that helped shape the town. Almost 40 artists from near and far have lovingly painted murals in Chemainus, leaving their mark on an outdoor art gallery that is considered the largest in Canada and that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world each year. Follow the yellow footsteps to find unique murals that are sure to leave an impression on you, such as a Trompe L’oeil mural on the Chemainus Theatre Festival building honouring celebrated artist Emily Carr, who painted in Chemainus in 1924, and a three-dimensional mining mural with sound on the Silver Mine on Chemainus building. The first murals appeared in Chemainus in 1982. With the mills starting to talk about closing, something had to be done. The town was awarded a grant through a provincial redevelopment fund in the early 1980s. Businessman Karl Schutz co-ordinated what became a mural revitalization project, and many community leaders stepped up, including Mayor Graham Bruce and businessman Al Johnson. Visit the Chemainus Visitor Centre at Waterwheel Park and ask to see the book Water Over the Wheel, where you can find the photographs that gave the mural artists their ideas. You can also purchase a souvenir mural map. At the Chemainus Valley Museum at Waterwheel Park, you will discover the original paintings of many of the town’s murals. To learn more about the murals, visit the Chemainus Festival of Murals Society at www.muraltown.com. Festival of Murals Tom Andrews, president, and Dee Kinee, community engagement manager, welcome you to the Festival of Murals walking tour.

Arts & Culture
Chemainus is no longer simply “Mural Town,” whose reputation grew in the 1980s as Canada’s Largest Outdoor Art Gallery. Since then, Chemainus Theatre Festival (chemainustheatrefestival.ca) and Chemainus Valley Cultural and Arts Society (CVCAS) have grown our town into a first-class music, art and performing arts destination. From weekly music in the park each Tuesday at 7pm to summer weekends full of art and music events, year round “open mic” and concert series and ongoing first-class theatrical productions, Chemainus has now become known as “Vancouver Island’s Arts Town.” The CVCAS has expanded its longstanding musical reputation to include visual arts, and is inviting writers into the tent. The Chemainus Valley Artists Association partnered with the Arts Society to form the Polka Dot Trail. The Polka Dot Trail encompasses all of Chemainus Valley from Saltair to Crofton. The highlight of the year is the Fall Studio Tour, where folks are invited to follow the polka dot trails and roadways to visit artists in their working studios. Be sure to keep their brochure on hand year round. To find out when and where the Polka Dot Map and Guide Book are available and downloadable go to www.polkadottrail.com or visit the Chemainus Visitor Centre to pick up a map.

Natural Beauty
If you love the great outdoors, you’ll love our beautiful region. Here, you’ll find trails, parks, beaches and many opportunities to get outside and get active. Waluum Park This second-growth forest is home to great Douglas Firs, a marsh and fascinating critters. Askew Creek Wilderness Park Some of the largest Douglas Firs in North Cowichan can be found here. Stocking Creek Park Here, you’ll discover a great picnic area, trails, parking and more. One of the trails leads you to the creek, where you can view a breathtaking waterfall. Fuller Lake Park The lake is stocked with trout, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer. There’s a playground, beach volleyball and tennis courts, a fishing pier, a boat ramp for non-motorized boats and more. (boat launch is year round off-leash dog park) Chemainus Lake You can walk the complete circuit around this park on a maintained trail, or fish off the dock, or put in and paddle. (off-leash dog park) Osborne Bay Park Walk the loop trails, or down to the pebble beaches and enjoy the calm waters and ‘ample fishing’ of this gem south of Crofton. (year round off-leash, unfenced dog park) Trans Canada Trail The nation-long trail has spread into Chemainus; you can find details at www.tctrail.ca. Waterwheel Park This beautiful park in downtown Chemainus features a working waterwheel, carvings hidden in trees, a playground and a bandshell for live music and special events. More outdoor activities: • Golf at Mount Brenton • Dive to a winged underwater reef • Get paddling • Try geocaching • Have a picnic at Kin Beach For maps and more information, you can pick up a Cowichan Valley Regional District Parks & Trails Guide and a Municipality of North Cowichan Parks, Recreation and Trails brochure at the Chemainus Visitor Centre at Waterwheel Park. You can also visit www.northcowichan.bc.ca and look up “Parks & Recreation.”

Wood products in the form of milled lumber and pulp & paper are vital industries in North Cowichan
Forestry heritage Logging trucks are a common sight on roads in the Chemainus and Crofton areas, and forest industries remain a major contributor to the North Cowichan economy. Chemainus Harbour, seen from the lookout next to the Visitor Information Centre in Waterwheel Square, shows how important forest industries are to the community. The statue of lumber magnate H.R. MacMillan is a testament to the region’s forest industry, as is MacMillan Bloedel Ltd’s Engine 1044 at the Chemainus and Henry ring road in Chemainus.

Saltair, Thetis Island & Crofton 14
Go exploring beyond Chemainus’ boundaries, and you’ll find yourself in the charming communities o f Sa l t a i r, Th e t i s I s l a n d and Crofton. In these areas, you’ll meet friendly people, take in beautiful ocean views, find fantastic food and come across a variety of recreational opportunities. Saltair Saltair Sunny Saltair, as this seaside community is known, is just a few minutes north of Chemainus. Saltair is known for its great parks and its ocean view, and it’s also home to a pub, a bistro, a store and more. Thetis Island Take a short ferry ride from Old Town Chemainus, and you’ll find yourself on beautiful, rural Thetis Island. Once on Thetis, you’ll find a variety of unique shops and art studios, several dining options and a summer market that runs from mid-May to late September at Telegraph Harbour Marina. If you’re staying over, be sure to book accommodation in advance at one of the island’s beautiful B&Bs because space is limited, and there are no campgrounds. Crofton Drive a few minutes south of Chemainus, and you’ll find yourself in Crofton, a quaint community on the calm waters of Osborne Bay. This small town features quiet parks, comfortable accommodations and a range of family activities, such as swimming, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing. The Crofton Seawalk was recently expanded, and it is a must-do. C ro f t o n i s a l s o a gateway to Salt Spring Island, which is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene and is only a short ferry ride away.

Feature Story
Looking up Creegan Street in Chemainus toward Mount Brenton.
A great place to visit
I cannot tell a lie, the decision to move from Victoria to Chemainus wasn’t an easy one for our family. Sure, the property values were lower, which meant we could get rid of our mortgage and plan better for our retirement years; and that we would be able to afford an extra-large corner lot with a fully finished workshop out back; and not having to contend with traffic jams, or being hit up on every street corner downtown for some spare change whenever we went for a walk. It would even mean having an ocean view – peek a boo to be sure, but there just the same – something we could never have dreamed of in the province’s capital city. But for me – a guy who, despite Victoria’s many flaws, considered it the best city in the world to live – moving to Chemainus in May 2015, was not made any easier by the burden of doubts I carried with me, along with all our worldly goods and chattels. So, really, it’s a testament to the place we’ve landed that our family’s biggest doubter is having to eat a little crow, and happily confess that Victoria is now relegated to the status of second-best place in the world to live – a great place to visit whenever we feel like seeing how things are progressing on the Blue Bridge and with the sewage treatment plant, and if we have time to take from our busy schedule up here for an hour-and-a-half drive over the Malahat. So, to adapt a couple of lines from Shakespeare’s hallowed text, let me ask the question: North Cowichan and Saltair, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Remember the Simon and Garfunkel tune: Sounds of Silence? On moving day, I didn’t get a chance to hear what they were on about, but the day after, when I actually moved into our Chemainus home, and stepped out the front door to contemplate my new hood, there it was – a silence so deep and profound you could actually hear it. I have since learned that not every
16
night is a silent night. Sometimes we can hear the whine of tires from Highway 1; or the sounds of the night shift at the mill in Chemainus Bay. But every once in a while, the silence is there, giving every other possible sound its meaning. One of the things I thought I’d miss most about Victoria was the arts, culture and entertainment. I can honestly say we’ve been to more musical performances, more dance and more theatre in our first year in Chemainus than we ever would have attended in Victoria, and we’ve never once been disappointed by the calibre of the artists. The Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society does an incredible job bringing first class, affordable performances into the community. And just up the road in Crofton, there’s plenty to keep you r feet tapping and hands clapping, too. Sunday Jazz at Crofton Hotel draws some of the best talent the Mid Island, Gulf Islands and beyond have to offer. And of course there’s the top notch professional Chemainus Theatre, which my former fellow Victorians travel over the Malahat heading this way in droves to see. Kayaking is something my wife, Diana, and I love to do. So far we’ve only just begun exploring the coast of our new home, but already we’re excited. There are parks within easy range for casual kayakers like us, who like to take two or three day beach-hopping trips, that don’t require long, open water passages. We’ve got our destinations marked for this summer. And if paddling’s not your thing, there’s plenty of outdoors here for the landlubbers. Waluum park, just up the hill from our home, is a great place for easy hiking. Stocking Creek Park, with it’s delightful waterfall and its interpretive signage is a must do. Chemainus Lake Park is an easy loop – there’s also a dock and place to put in if you want to do some fishing. We haven’t had a chance to hike that neck of the woods, but a Crofton resident who walks there frequently told me it’s a great place to hike... and invited Diana and I to
www.chemainus.bc.ca
A rainbow over the Strait, looking out from Kinsmen Park
...and to call home join her any time... that’s the kind of friendly you’re likely to meet here in North Cowichan and Saltair. For those who prefer a more urban setting, what better walk could you find than the Chemainus Mural Tour. (maps available at the Visitor Centre) Diana and I spent a wonderful day last fall not only enjoying the murals, but also discovering special nooks of Chemainus, which we might not have discovered for a long time otherwise. As for the murals, there’s the first viewing, which we’ve already taken, then there’s the deeper understanding that comes when you start to explore the meanings behind the paintings. The library, and the Chemainus Valley Museum at Water Wheel Square, beside the Visitor Centre, are great resources for learning more. Another leisurely stroll you’ll not want to miss is the Crofton Community Seawalk, which leaves from a parking lot not far from the Crofton Vesuvius ferry to Salt Spring Island. That one’s still on my to do list – although I’ve been at the entrance several times, I’ve not yet had a chance to tread the boards. So there’s my newcomer’s guide to Chemainus and Crofton. There’s lots more that could be said, especially if you head on down to the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Centre, where there’s way more information than a newcomer like me can provide... Oh! And did I tell you about Chemainus taking pride in the variety and quality of the ice-cream it has on hand? No? Well it’s true!
