CHEMAINUS World-Famous Murals

An outdoor art gallery L

e a r n about the history of Chemainus and soak up some public art as you follow the yellow footsteps through town and discover our worldfamous murals. Chemainus’ 44 murals and 10 sculptures celebrate our colourful history and attract thousands of visitors from all over the world to our outdoor ar t gallery, considered the largest in Canada. The early history of the Chemainus area is tied to the nearby forests and the industries associated with them. A sawmill opened in 1862, and with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1880s, the town slowly grew over the next 30 years. Like many resourcebased communities, Chemainus relied on the mill and environmental resources, and by the late 1970s, the industry was suffering difficult times. Chemainus’ future looked bleak when the mills star ted talking about closing, but the town was awarded a grant through a provincial redevelopment fund in the early 1980s. Community leader s, led

6

by a new, young mayor named Gr aham Br uce , began searching for ideas about how to best utilize the funds, and social entrepreneur Karl Schutz was asked to contribute suggestions and ultimately co-ordinate what became a mural revitalization project. Businessman Al Johnson also played a key role in mobilizing the revitalization project. The fir st mur als appeared in Chemainus in 1982, and the gallery has grown to include 44 murals. Most of them por tray the history of Chemainus, and some of the more recent additions include murals honouring

painter Emily Carr, who painted in Chemainus in 1924. Many of Chemainus’ murals were inspired by photographs, and they are very accurate portrayals of time gone by. Visit the Chemainus Visitor Centre by Waterwheel Park and ask to see the book Water Over the Wheel to see the photos that gave the ar tists their ideas. You can also purchase a souvenir mural map at the Visitor Centre. If you’re lucky, you might catch artists touching up the murals as you walk around town. To learn more about the murals, visit www.muraltown.com.

CHEMAINUS The Surrounding Area

Explore Saltair, Crofton and Thetis Island

O

nce you get outside of Chemainus, you’ll discover friendly people, beautiful views and great opportunities for outdoor activities in the charming communities of Saltair, Thetis Island and Crofton. Just a few minutes north of Chemainus, you’ll discover Sunny Saltair, a seaside community of roughly 1,800 people known for its parks and ocean views. Relax and enjoy the rural feel of this beautiful spot, while exploring the parks and discovering a pub, bistro, store and more. A short ferry ride from Old Town Chemainus brings you to Thetis Island, one of the smaller, lesstravelled Gulf Islands with a permanent population of about 360 — which grows to between 1,000 and 2,000 people in fine weather seasons. Once on Thetis, you’ll discover crystal clear waters, wonderful views, beautiful shorelines and delightful rural scenes. There is a wide variety of recreational opportunities on the island, and you can find a Sunday morning Summer Market at the Telegraph Harbour Marina from mid-May to late September. If you’re staying over on Thetis, be sure to book accommodation in advance at one of the island’s beautiful bed and breakfasts because space is limited, and there are no campgrounds.

Thetis Island

Saltair

Just a few minutes south of Chemainus, you’ll find Crofton on the calm waters of Osborne Bay. Crofton’s story dates back to the 19th century, and the community of about 2,500 people now features quiet parks, comfortable accommodations and a range of family activities, such as golfing, swimming, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing. The newly expanded Crofton Seawalk is a real highlight, stretching from Crofton Beach to the ferry parking lot. Crofton is the gateway to Salt Spring Island, which is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene and is only a short ferry ride away.
