So what’s this celebration called Ladysmith Days all about? It’s about a community we can celebrate all year long for being: fun, generous, talented and caring Ladysmith Days says a lot about the community it celebrates. First of all, we’re a community that likes to have fun. Just try to fit in all the activities going on from 7 a.m. Saturday until the Fireworks Spectacular at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, and you’ll quickly discover there’s not enough room on your calendar. We’re also a community that wants to be inclusive. There’s activities for kids, teens, parents and grandparents. There’s nobody who’s not invited to Ladysmith Days, be they residents of the town, or visitors who just happen upon the weekend’s activities. Then there’s the generosity, so evident at events like this. Think of all the volunteers who have contributed countless hours organizing, promoting and running all the activities,
and you’ll begin to get an idea how much we give to each other. Not to mention the sponsors who, year after year, contribute so much to make Ladysmith Days – and a host of other civic celebrations – possible. That’s part of who we are. We’re a community blessed with talent and flair. Check out Ladysmith has Talent at the Transfer Beach Amphitheatre both Saturday and Sunday, and you’ll see just how many shining stars there are in our repertoire. And be sure to watch the Ladysmith Days parade to see lots of pizzazz and flair on the move. Are we up for a challenge? You bet, and we don’t mind having a laugh while we’re at it. The Greasy Pole contest and the Ladies Nail Driving Contest are reminiscent of county fair fun from an era when people used to make
their own entertainment. And there’s the Zucchini Races, of course. We’re caring. While Ladysmith Days is the focus of the community and its organizations over one weekend, that same community and those same organizations raise funding for all kinds of worthy causes all year round. So for a couple of days each year, we pull out all the stops and have a great time celebrating this very special place where we live… which means, to a large degree, that we’re celebrating ourselves. And just because the celebration lasts a couple of days, doesn’t mean what’s being celebrated is bracketed. Ladysmith, like any community, has it’s issues. But what Ladysmith Days celebrates is a community that’s fun, inclusive, generous, talented, up for a challenge and caring. Those are qualities worth celebrating 365 days a year.

Transfer Beach Playground officially opens on Aug. 2 Opening tied in to Ladysmith Days Raffle underway to cover remaining costs Volunteers have been working feverishly to install a new playground at Transfer Beach, in time for an official dedication during Ladysmith Days. And they’re on track to make it. So kids won’t have to wait much longer for their turn on the swings, the slides and the giant climbing dome. But as much work as there was for volunteers to do on the ground, there’s still more to do raising the funds needed to pay the bills. “A project like this takes a lot of manpower,” said Duck Paterson, chair of the Kinsmen project. “Not only the work to set up the playground, but also to raise the $175,000 needed to make the project possible.” The Kinsmen are just shy of their fundraising goal, and are turning to the community in a final push to get across the financial finish line. “We are currently sitting at about $169,000,” Paterson said. With support from Air Canada and the Nanaimo Airport, the Kinsmen are raffling

The raffle winner can choose between: An ‘amazing’ New York Long Weekend, with your choice of a Broadway show, dinner, and 3 night stay at Hilton New York; or a Fighter Pilot for a Day – Air Combat USA fighter pilot experience for one, with a three night Hyatt Place stay. Air Canada will provide economy class, return tickets to any scheduled destination in Canada or the continental USA. Second prize is a BC Lions authentic training jacket; third prize, two family dinners courtesy of the Transfer Beach Concession. Only 1,160 tickets will be sold, at $20 each. The draw will be held Sunday, Aug. 2. 11 a.m. at the opening of the new playground at Transfer Beach. You can support this worthwhile cause by buying a ticket at the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce, Pemberton Homes Realty, Twisted Scissor Hair Salon or by contacting Mike Sumpter at 250-245-2063, or Duck Paterson at 250-245-2263, or any other Ladysmith Kinsmen.

Blasts from the past part of this year’s fun Favourite events from years gone by add to laughs Let’s have a blast from the past! This year’s theme – A blast from the past! – harkens back to the time when Ladysmith Days was known as Beach Ball Days. What could be a more fitting symbol of carefree fun than a bouncing beach ball? A beach ball takes the serious edge off any game (volleyball, for instance, or soccer, if you can imagine); it’s bright colours remind you of a circus tent; it floats any way the wind blows. Beach Balls So incorporating beach balls into the activities in 2015 seemed a fitting tribute to Ladysmith Days’ origins, and the Celebrations Society, with sponsorship from The Great Canadian Dollar Store, will be tossing around lots of them during the Kinsmen parade Saturday, starting at 10:15 a.m. Look for the Celebration Society’s float, then get ready to catch one of the numbered beach balls that will be tossed into the crowd. Catch one and bring it down to the Ladysmith Days tent at the “beach party” at Transfer Beach on Saturday night from 6 – 8 p.m. to collect a prize. Each beach ball is a winner and the prizes will vary.
$100 gift certificate for first place finishers and $50 for second. Greasy Pole Climb The Greasy Pole Contest is back, too. This slick event takes place beside the Kin Hut at Transfer Beach, starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday. To participate you must be over 12 years, and have to register at the Ladysmith Days tent (there will be no registrations at the pole). The objective is to slither up the greasy 26 foot pole within the allotted 10 minutes for a chance to win cash prizes. The lucky contestant who reaches the top will be able to claim a $100 bill; seven other contestants who make it half way up the pole will earn themselves $50, and bragging rights. Coveralls are provided. The event is sponsored by Wash Me on Ludlow.
