Festival of Lights ready to plug in Staff Writer THE CHRONICLE
NIOMI PEARSON/CHRONICLE
Festival of Lights volunteer Bill Stacey was one of dozens of local residents who came out to the community workbee on November 6 to help decorate and string up thousands of lights for LightUp. Here, Stacey checks one of the plug-ins at Bob Stuart Park.
Ladysmith’s most popular event of the year is set to plug in this Thursday. The Ladysmith Festival of Lights, now in its 24th year, will thrill both children and adults alike with its bright lights, sweet treats and holiday atmosphere. The Festival of Lights’ inaugural year was 1987 and has grown to a much-anticipated event that attracts over 20,000 annually. Some spectators come from as far as Washington State and all over Vancouver Island to take in the event. Thousands of hours of volunteer work go into planning Light-Up and preparation. Local businesses, volunteers, the town and other groups have pitched in to prepare First Avenue for the celebration. On November 6, community members came out in droves to help decorate and install lights on homes, businesses and public parks.
The festivities kick off at 3 p.m. with the Christmas Craft Fair at Aggie Hall. Partakers can get a head start on or finish off their holiday shopping with a variety of vendors to choose from.
At the Eagles Hall, a community spaghetti dinner will start at 3 p.m. The cost for adults is $8 per person while children under 10 only pay $5. Street entertainment will begin to filter through First Avenue at 4 p.m., and there will be opportunities for dining and shopping. There will also be stage entertainment in downtown Ladysmith and near Aggie Hall.
Santa will arrive in downtown Ladysmith at 6:30 p.m. to welcome guests and lead the countdown to flipping the switch and turning all the lights on. The Kinsmen parade follows at 6:45 p.m., and will be followed by a community Christmas Carol at Aggie Hall and the Chuck Perrin Christmas Tree Light-Up. The parade will run its traditional route down First Avenue beginning at the Ladysmith and District Credit Union. This year’s parade promises to be a spectacle of bright lights, colourful visuals and plenty of participation from residents and businesses alike. Drivers should be aware that First Avenue will be closed to traffic from 3 p.m. until after Light-Up finishes. Twenty-six new trees have been added to this year’s Light-Up, as well as the addition of some LED lighting as festival organizers slowly work towards replacing all 150,000 of their lights with energy efficient ones.

A message from the publisher: I wish everyone a happy holiday season. As you head out to do your Christmas shopping, I would like to encourage you to support our local businesses. Instead of immediately deciding on a present that you know you can’t get in Ladysmith, take a look around and see what you can buy here first. There are so many ideas: Gift certificates for a massage, haircut or eating out; Coffee cards, oil change, gym membership, car washes, tree pruning/gardening, computer equipment; Clothing, art, makeup, candy, giftware, dishware — the list could go on and on. I encourage you to get out of your car, take a walk through Ladysmith stores and see what there is to offer. When you support local businesses, you are supporting your neighbours, your kids, local sports teams, charities, etc. So please, think local first! Thanks and Happy Holidays!
