Be a Part of...Community Life ART Night Out Every third Friday through September Celebrate the arts and your community every third Friday in Old Town. The eighth season of Lafayette’s unique Art Night Out street fairs promise to provide a “creative, diverse, and eclectic” experience for the entire family. Artist booths and demonstrations, art galleries, kids’ activities, live music, food trucks, and more are situated at Festival Plaza and along Public Road from Cannon to Emma Streets. Enjoy wine or a Lafayette-brewed craft beer at the Arts! Lafayette beer and wine garden. The street fairs run from 5-9:15pm on June 19, July 17, August 21, and September 18. Mayor’s Column The Times They Are A’Changin! Adaptive Reuse, Infill and New Development in Lafayette You may have noticed around town that there are some changes coming to our town. Lafayette is a beautiful community that prides itself on inclusivity, diversity, healthy lifestyles, sustainability and creativity. What we have known all along is out there now, and everyone wants to be a part of it! The projects detailed below will continue to enhance Lafayette’s close-knit community feel and historic identity by supporting in-fill development and expanding retail within the Old Town area. With an eye towards mobility
and accessibility, all of these projects are located near transit and support walking and biking opportunities. Walkability is certainly an important aspect of creating a more sustainable, vital and healthy community! I look forward to seeing you at one of Lafayette’s amazing summer events!!! Adaptive Reuse–Bringing an old building back to life! Lafayette Commons; 400 E. Simpson–New boutique offices in Old Town lcommons.com
The greenest building is the one that is already built! The Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority (LURA) partnered with the developer to reconstruct the historic facade on this building located at the southeast corner of Simpson and Iowa. The site was home to the original Lafayette Bank, established by Lafayette’s founding mother and likely the first female bank president of the time, Mary Miller. The bank portion of the site burned in 1922, but the adjacent storefront remained. Through the years, the building was home to a library, the Rocky Mountain Store, (a company store for miners) and a dance hall. Lafayette Commons is now the site of 22 office suites. The “Strollers” sculpture, purchased by the Lafayette Public Art Committee, will be installed here this fall as one of the first art expansions onto Simpson Street as recommended by the 2011 Downtown Vision.

Redevelopment plans for the former La Familia building, located at 201 N. Public Road, have passed through the LURA, Planning Commission, and City Council approval processes, and construction is anticipated to begin this summer. The building has sat vacant and deteriorating since 2009 with an unsound foundation, neglected structure and sagging roof. This historic reconstruction project consists of a 1,737 square foot restaurant, 933 square foot roof top patio, and 1,688 square foot art gallery/museum. The facade of the building will also be reconstructed with large plate glass windows, decorative corbels, canvas awnings, and shiplap siding to reflect the original historic 1930’s-era Highway Café. Features meeting the 2011 Downtown Vision Plan include repurposing
this specific building as an anchor to create a welcoming Old Town gateway, incorporating outdoor seating elements that play to the street, supporting neighborhood-oriented development, and encouraging pedestrian traffic. The project architect is also the developer/architect for Louisville’s historic grain elevator restoration project.

Construction began in May on the Simpson Old Town project, a redevelopment of the former Sister Carmen Community Center site on the northwest corner of Simpson St. and Iowa Ave. Plans for this mixed-use development include the construction of 18 townhomes and approximately 2,350 square feet of commercial space. The plan was presented to the Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority and Lafayette Planning Commission in October 2014, and was approved by City Council in February. The Simpson Old Town development will offer desirable residential in-fill within walking distance of a growing collection of dining and entertainment attractions along Simpson St. which was Lafayette’s “original main street”.

Plans are being developed for a mixed-use building complex located on 10 acres north of City Hall. The plan is to create a project with 90% residential and 10% commercial, which will include approximately 200 multi-family units and 16,640 square feet of commercial space. The project will enhance Lafayette’s small-town character by creating an in-fill development providing accessibility to employment centers, downtown commercial shopping and dining, and RTD transit service routes. Open areas, trail connections and a multimodal path are planned. Watch for public input meetings later this summer/fall.

A reminder that the City of Lafayette has a permanent water conservation ordinance in place. Landscape watering is not allowed between the hours 10am and 6pm. • The first 50 Lafayette residents to enroll with EnergySmart and complete a home improvement project will receive up to $450 in rebates*.
Lafayette’s 20 miles of trails, 19 parks, and 967 acres of open space provide great opportunities for active residents and their pets. Dogs that are taken for a walk in Lafayette, or are off their owner’s property, must be on a leash and under the owner’s physical control at all times. Electronic collars are not recognized as appropriate control measures. The Great Bark Dog Park is the only area in the City where dogs are allowed to be off-leash. To report an at-large or off-leash dog, contact the Police Dispatch Center at 303-441-4444.
u EMERALD ASH BORER EMERALD ASH BORER (EAB) is an insect responsible for the death or decline of ash trees, and has been detected in the City of Boulder. Because infestation is difficult to identify, a professional tree inspection is recommended if a problem is suspected. The City has a plan in place to watch for EAB on public lands in the event the insect makes its way into our community.
