Library to Expand Offerings Through Regional Consortium
In September, the Lafayette Public Library will join the Boulder, Broomfield, Longmont, and Louisville libraries as a member of the Flatirons Library Consortium. Membership in this regional system of library resources will provide Lafayette cardholders with many additional benefits, including a 3-4 day turn around on online catalog requests. In January 2017 patrons will have direct access to over 30 million items in the consortium-shared collection.
Melissa Hisel (left), new Library Director, demonstrates the Flatiorns Consortium online catalog to a patron.
The library will be closed September 26 and 27 to migrate to the new library catalog system. Book drops will be open, and no items will be due during the closure. The library will re-open on September 28 with expanded access to the Flatirons Library Consortium catalog. The Lafayette Library staff looks forward to providing even better service to the community through membership in the Flatirons Library Consortium. cityoflafayette.com/LibraryConsortium.

Activate Lafayette Community Input Needed!
The City recently received an Activating Places and Spaces Grant from the Colorado Health Foundation. This grant project proposes to enhance the recently launched Walk and Wheel program by developing an interactive mobile app that will allow users to access, utilize, engage with, wayfind, socially share, and be educated on Lafayette’s public outdoor spaces, points of interest, and trails through a variety of methods.
Share your input at cityoflafayette.com/Activate
Initial direction was collected through a July 21 community-wide input session and discussions with city boards and commissions. If you missed the public meeting you’re encouraged to share your ideas with us through an online survey. The survey, as well as additional information, can be accessed at cityoflafayette.com/Activate

Walk and Wheel Update: Bike Lanes on Emma, Fall Bike Tours
Melissa Rich Photography www.melissarich.com
In June we hosted bike tours of the Walk and Wheel route. Participants were very excited to experience first-hand new routes and shortcuts to safely and efficiently walk and bike in Lafayette with their families. Please check out the Trails Map you received in the mail and try some of the suggested routes – including the newly striped bike lanes being installed on West Emma. I think one of the added benefits is discovering different neighborhoods and areas you might not otherwise be familiar with!
Mayor Berg and Sunny at the Lafayette RTD Park-N-Ride
The City just received another grant to create a communitywide mobile app that will connect residents to all of our outdoor public spaces and trails – please help us create the best tool possible by providing input at cityoflafayette.com/ ActivateLafayette
RTD L Route Improvements and a Possible Ballot Initiative
The L Route that goes through Lafayette now has increased service to Longmont and Denver on weekdays and weekends including 5 new daily trips on weekdays and 7 new Saturday trips (that run all day). Learn more at www.RideTheL.com. Also be sure to take advantage of the free L Route passes you received in the mail. There are certainly many benefits to leaving your car at home and taking the bus. According to Boulder County Transportation, we spend on average nearly 20% of our overall income on transportation. Less cars on the road means less traffic congestion, no parking fees or searching for parking spaces, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and a stress-free commute.
You’ve probably noticed the new Walk and Wheel route signage around town. The full route is outlined in the Trails Map residents received in the mail. Additional copies may be picked up at the Recreation Center, Library, City Hall and local bike shops, or viewed online. Bike lanes on west Emma St. and sharrow (shared bike/ car) lanes on Harrison Ave. will be installed the week of July 25. Watch for temporary areas of no parking while the striping project is in process. The City will be partnering with Boulder Valley School District to host free bike tours and bike safety classes this Fall. Sign up at cityoflafayette.com/ WalkAndWheel to receive notifications of these events.
To encourage multi-modal transportation, City Council is considering a proposal for a city-wide community bus pass to allow all residents, including kids who take the bus to school, to ride for free. Additionally, providing a bus pass for every resident who wants one will improve affordable living in Lafayette – especially for those who rely on public transportation. To pay for the cost of this community pass we are considering a mill-levy increase (early estimates would be $10 for every $100,000 value on a house) to appear on November’s ballot. So get your friends and family together and try out our Walk and Wheel routes, find new places to hang out in Lafayette, hop on the bus for a night out on the town and stay tuned for more news on our community-wide bus pass! As always, if you have suggestions and ideas please feel free to contact me at Christine.Berg@ cityoflafayette.com. Happy walking, biking and riding!

ONLY Service Animals Allowed at City Events
Hot pavement, crowds, and other dogs can impact pet safety and well-being at public events. Additionally, many children and adults are fearful of being in close proximity to pets during those events. Effective with the passing of a Resolution in June, the City is requiring event attendees to leave pets at home to provide a safer and more positive experience for all attendees – including those pets. Service animals are allowed to accompany their owners at all Lafayette events. More information can be found at cityoflafayette.com/NoPetsPlease
u

Be a Part of...New Dining, Hotel and Cultural Options Locally-owned and fast casual restaurant options are expanding this summer. Along Public Road, the Black Diamond, Romero’s K9 Social Club, and Community restaurants are all close to finalizing construction. Mooyah Burgers and PizzaRev, located at the corner of S. Boulder Road and Hwy 287 held grand openings in June.
The Black Diamond Restaurant under construction.
The Arts Hub, a full-scale theater and arts center located on Courtney Way, will celebrate its grand opening in August. An additional enhancement, adding to Lafayette’s array of cultural arts destinations, is a City-owned art gallery fronting the reconstructed Hi-Way Café building on Public Road. It is slated to open late 2016. Plans are in place to install the historic Coca-Cola mural along the south side of the Black Diamond Restaurant building – donations are still needed. Donate online at cityoflafayette.com/Mural. Lafayette’s first hotel is breaking ground late summer. A Hampton Inn and Suites, located on Exempla Circle, is expected to open early 2017. The House Inn Old Town, a boutique event and lodging venue on Public Road, is anticipated to open this Fall.
