LOUISIANA

IN THE LIMELIGHT

Cinema on the Bayou Attracts Filmmakers from Around the World South Louisiana’s extraordinary sense of place has inspired artists for centuries. Cultural landmarks, Southern scenes, and enchanting natural beauty have created a memorable backdrop for numerous feature films and television shows like Steel Magnolias, Interview with the Vampire, True Blood, and one of the last episodes of Parts Unknown by the late Anthony Bourdain. And every January, filmmakers from across the globe fly into the cultural hotbed of Lafayette for Cinema on the Bayou, where they showcase more than 180 films over eight days.

· 2019

“Lafayette is an inspiring place—the mystique, the French language,” says Pat Mire, renowned filmmaker and founder of the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival. “Three of the major players in Quebec cinema are coming in this year, along with others from as far away as Japan and Australia. It’s really exciting.” The 14th annual Cinema on the Bayou will be held January 23-30 at various venues in downtown Lafayette, from the Acadiana Center for the Arts to the public library. Throughout the week, participants can take in nearly 200 domestic and international films, attend expert panel discussions and filmmaker Q&A sessions, and enjoy nightly parties with live local music. The festival, which regularly screens French-language independent films, has become the center of Francophone independent film in the U.S. The 2019 festival lineup was chosen from a total pool of more than 1,000 submissions and includes 40 feature-length narrative fiction and documentary films and over 140 short films, including narrative, documentary, animated and experimental films. The film festival will open with the U.S. premiere of Black Indians, a Parisian film about the African-American Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans who pay homage to their Native-American brothers and sisters. The festival will close with the world premiere of Finding Cajun, a bilingual, in-depth look at South Louisiana’s diverse cultural identity. “These films could have premiered in New Orleans or in Canada, but they’re premiering here in Lafayette—that says everything,” says Mire. Born in South Louisiana, Mire is an award-winning documentarian and narrative fiction filmmaker. His cultural documentaries have been broadcast nationally on PBS, the Discovery Channel, and The Nashville Network. His films Against the Tide: The Story of the Acadian People won Best Historical Documentary, and Dirty Rice holds the record for the longest running feature film in Lafayette movie theaters—outlasting even Star Wars and Spider-Man. In August of 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, famed Quebecois filmmaker Andre Gladu was set to premiere his documentary, Maroon. Following the adage that the show must go on, the National Film Board of Canada called Pat Mire, two hours west in Acadiana, to see what could be done. The film premiered in Lafayette in 2006, and Cinema on the Bayou was born.

THE

SOUNDTRACK OF ACADIANA

LOUISIANA CROSSROADS ANNUAL CONCERT SERIES

Music is as much a part of the Cajun Country experience as gumbo and boudin. The sound of Acadiana is so distinctive that no matter where you are in the world, hearing just one note of music can transport you right to South Louisiana. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in music is at Louisiana Crossroads. From September through April, Downtown’s Acadiana Center for the Arts hosts intimate evenings of music and storytelling from an eclectic mix of artists. Different in style and genre, both GRAMMY-winning and up-and-coming musicians come together at Louisiana Crossroads for their shared love of Lafayette.

"You go to Nashville, you try to catch a show at the Grand Ole Opry,” says Joel Savoy, celebrity guest curator of Louisiana Crossroads. “Come to Lafayette, and you want to catch a show at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. It’s the classiest joint in town.” Bree Sargent, spokesperson for Acadiana Center for the Arts, notes this season is extra special with Savoy as their guest curator. Nominated for 10 GRAMMYs, Savoy won the award as recording engineer and producer of his South Louisiana label, Valcour Records. Savoy’s musical roots run deep. His parents Marc and Ann Savoy are Cajun music icons and his brother, Wilson, is the frontman of the popular band Pine Leaf Boys. “Lafayette is a music city—everything involves music here, and you can go dancing anywhere,” says Savoy. “But to actually listen to the music and to get to know the artists, there is no better way than to attend a Louisiana Crossroads concert. The shows are dynamic and entertaining while remaining informative—you can really get a feel for the depth of the musicians here.”

JANUARY 17-18, 2019

Farewell Alligator Man: A Tribute to the Music of Jimmy C. Newman Jimmy C. Newman went from the small town of South Louisiana’s Mamou to the big time when he made it into the Grand Ole Opry in 1956. Join local musicians as they pay tribute to the local legend with 33 of his songs from the Country Billboard Chart.

MARCH 26-27, 2019

The Deslondes Present Mashed Potato Records This show puts the spotlight on the five-piece New Orleans band with unique roots in the Lower Ninth Ward’s Holy Cross neighborhood. The Deslondes will perform original material as well as a variety of tributes from musicians on the New Orleans-based Mashed Potato record label.

APRIL 12-13, 2019

A Two-Night Showcase of Non-Traditional Louisiana Music While known primarily for Cajun, zydeco, brass, blues, and jazz, Louisiana is also a hotspot for wildly creative new music. Broaden your musical horizons with some of the most accomplished non-traditional musicians from the region.

Mardi Gras in Cajun Country

Experience a Family-Friendly Cajun Mardi Gras

34

LAFAYETTE CONVENTION AND VISITORS COMMISSION

· 2019

While Carnival—or Mardi Gras—is celebrated in cities around the world, Louisiana has mastered the art of revelry like no other. Mardi Gras in the United States dates back to the late 1700s by French societies on the Gulf Coast. Today, each community celebrates Mardi Gras a little differently, and visitors to Acadiana can experience unique traditions from elaborate parades and delicious king cakes to a wildly exciting chicken chase. Lafayette natives Deidra and Tommy Montgomery come from a long line of Mardi Gras royalty. “For us, Mardi Gras is about getting together with our family and celebrating life in preparation for Lent,” says Deidra. “It’s wonderful being part of a tradition that’s bigger than ourselves, and one that brings all different generations together. Year after year, we get to celebrate our community and our beautiful culture that’s held together by family, faith, and fun.” Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, is the season of excess and merriment before Ash Wednesday when Catholics and other Christians give up daily luxuries during Lent. Mardi Gras officially begins on the Epiphany, the twelfth day of Christmas when the three kings presented gifts to baby Jesus. Local bakeries start displaying king cakes, a pastry decorated in purple, green and gold to signify justice, faith, and power. Hidden inside each cake is a plastic baby, and the person who finds it must bring a king cake to the next party. For visitors wanting to take king cake home, bakeries are happy to package them for travel or even ship them for you. Mardi Gras parades will be in full swing the weekends of February 22 and March 1. Lafayette’s massive parade route extends nearly five miles from downtown’s Jefferson Street up Johnston Street ending at the Cajundome. Families with small children may wish to catch the parade early downtown, while those with older kids may enjoy staying up late to watch the end. No matter where you’re standing, you’ll be sure to fill your bags with toys, stuffed animals, candy, cups, and lots of beads tossed by costumed krewes on colorful floats. The season culminates on March 5 when many schools and businesses close for Mardi Gras Day. While formal balls are typically held for krewe members only, everyone is invited to enjoy the parades and Le Festival de Mardi Gras à Lafayette—a carnival midway at the Cajundome March 1-5. To experience Mardi Gras of centuries past, visitors can attend a traditional Courir de Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday Run, where revelers in traditional costumes go door to door begging for ingredients to make a gumbo. At Vermilionville’s Feb. 17 event, revelers let a chicken loose while children scramble to catch it. The grand prize is a trophy—and bragging rights, of course! As we say here in Acadiana, laissez les bon temps rouler! Let the good times roll! See next page for a list of Mardi Gras parades and events in Lafayette Parish or go to
