Things You’ll Only Find in
Acadiana For travelers looking to immerse themselves in a true cultural experience, put Lafayette on your bucket list. Louisiana’s Cajun Country is one of the most unique places you’ll find in the United States. Among fields of rice and sugarcane, bayous and cypress swamps, you’ll discover authentic music, incredible cuisine and joie de vivre—a genuine joy of life you won’t find anywhere else.

Borden's 1940s. Photo provided by the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court Louis J Perret
Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe Dating back to the 1800s, Borden’s became one of the most recognized dairy brands with its iconic Elsie the Cow mascot. Visitors can savor a blast from the past in the very last Borden’s in the world. The Lafayette outpost has been a mainstay since 1940 and still serves old-fashioned ice cream malts, shakes, sodas, and scoops as well as ice-cold milk right out of the machine. It’s the perfect ending to a sweet trip to Lafayette.
Popeyes Only Buffet Now with 2,600 franchises worldwide, this fried chicken joint started in New Orleans in 1972. But the world’s only Popeyes buffet is located right here in Lafayette. Here, you can pile your plate high with mild or spicy chicken, buttery biscuits, red beans and rice, mac ’n’ cheese, coleslaw, and mashed potatoes and gravy. In 2018, while in town for his show Parts Unknown, Anthony Bourdain couldn’t get enough of the Popeyes buffet. He dined there for three days in a row, enjoying chicken, biscuits with gravy, and his favorite—their mac ’n’ cheese.

Evangeline Maid Bread Sign The most famous Acadian refugee to the area is Evangeline, who was immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem. Drive around town, and you’ll see her name on everything from an oak tree and highway signs to a giant billboard with a spinning loaf of bread. Now 100-years-old, Evangeline Maid bread is still produced in Acadiana where some half a million loaves are made each week. Get a photo by the iconic sign and be sure to pick up a loaf of the soft white bread at a local grocer. You’ll thank us later!

A One-of-Kind George Rodrigue Acadiana’s native son George Rodrigue became famous for his Blue Dog paintings, but before creating the pop-art icon, he documented the distinct Cajun culture through paintings and sculpture. Fans can see his work at galleries in Lafayette, New Orleans, and California, but little know about this hidden gem: his 12-foot monument depicting the poet Longfellow and the reunion of Evangeline and her lost love Gabriel. Rodrigue created The Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Monument in Italy in the early 1980s and had it shipped back home to Acadiana where it now stands on Asma Blvd. off of Kaliste Saloom.
Avery Island Tabasco sauce hails from Cajun Country on beautiful Avery Island, where founder Edmund McIlhenny first made the world-famous pepper sauce in 1868. Take a tour of the factory and museum or dine in the local restaurant. The Country Store is the perfect spot for getting souvenir sauce for friends and family back home. SOLO Songwriters Festival May 21-26 All great musicians require a source of inspiration to draw out their inner voice. South Louisiana is that muse for many songwriters, where creativity flows out of them like the area’s fertile rivers and bayous. Acadiana has raised and nurtured GRAMMY-winning artists from the French-Cajun band Lost Bayou Ramblers, Zydeco master Chubby Carrier and contemporary Christian music’s Lauren Daigle to hundreds of others who create authentic music every day. “It all starts with a song,” says Mark Falgout, music lover and owner of the legendary Blue Moon Saloon. Hoping to inspire the creation of more great local music, Falgout founded the SOLO Songwriters Festival in 2018. The inaugural event was such a success, it’s back again this year from May 21-26. “I wanted to add another element to the musical landscape in Lafayette,” Falgout says. “To bring in professionals from out of town and collaborate with local folks to further connections, advance their careers and really ignite Lafayette’s creative scene.” Dozens of aspiring and professional songwriters from Acadiana to Canada and from New Orleans to New York will come together for various songwriting workshops throughout the week. They’ll sit in on panels with entertainment lawyers, publicists, record label presidents, and other industry professionals as well as participate in French writing workshops. At the end of the week, festival-goers can enjoy the fruits of their labor at evening events in downtown venues, including Blue Moon Saloon and Warehouse 535. “We pair aspiring songwriters with professional writers, then mix it up the next day so everyone is working with someone else,” explains festival organizer Rachelle Dugas. “When you focus on the songs and not on the performances, you get to hear the stories. Writers have the chance to interact with the audience in an intimate setting and share their personal experiences and influences.” The festival is bringing in Nick Lowe, UK punk rock icon and Elvis Costello’s producer; Garry Tallent, founding member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band; and Jim Lauderdale, multiple GRAMMY and Americana Music Association award-winning musician. Back this year to lead songwriting breakout sessions are Mary Gauthier, the GRAMMY-nominated folk singer/songwriter who’s penned songs for Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton, as well as Beth Nielsen Chapman, who’s written songs for such artists as Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Elton John, Faith Hill and Willie Nelson. “When we got here at the beginning of the week, none of these songs existed,” said Nielsen Chapman at the end of last year’s festival. “And none of these deep friendships and pulsating, heart-throbbing love stories had begun. There’s been a lot of love in this process.” The festival is made possible by a collaboration with Lafayette-based CREATE Initiative and The Buddy Holly Foundation. Festival-goers can purchase individual day passes at the door for $25 or a weekend pass for $40 for 12 hours of music.

· 2019
EatLafayette Spotlights 100 Local Restaurants Southern Living recently named Lafayette “Tastiest City in the South,” but Acadiana has been a foodie town long before there were even foodie towns. Hank Williams taught the world that having big fun on the bayou means having jambalaya and a crawfish pie and filé gumbo—not to mention po’boys, etouffee, duck confit, fried rabbit, boudin, and cracklins. To showcase the variety of local cuisine, Lafayette Travel created the EatLafayette campaign to serve visitors and residents one tantalizing menu of the best the city has to offer. New York and Chicago might have a Restaurant Week, but EatLafayette is a summer-long celebration June 16 – Sept. 15. The top local restaurants in the region dish out specials on popular cuisine, providing foodies the perfect excuse to sample their way through the heart of Louisiana’s Cajun Country. To qualify as a local eatery, restaurants must have gotten their start in Lafayette Parish. EatLafayette has grown from 18 restaurants when it was created 14 years ago to over 100 local restaurants today. Over the years, EatLafayette has evolved into a foodie’s best guide to eating local. “We want people to think local not just during our summer EatLafayette campaign but all year round,” says Ben Berthelot, President & CEO of Lafayette Travel. “Food is one of the biggest reasons people come here. You can find chain restaurants in any town in America, but there’s only one Judice Inn, Bailey’s Seafood, Olde Tyme Grocery, and Charley G’s—and I could go on and on.” Participating restaurants for EatLafayette include casual mom-and-pops and family-friendly diners to special occasion establishments from both up-andcoming chefs to James Beard nominees. The cuisine isn’t limited just to Cajun, with a wide array of options reflective of Acadiana’s melting pot of French, Creole, Italian, Asian, Southern, Mediterranean, and everything in between. This year, EatLafayette will include a Dining by District feature, so visitors and locals can easily find a nearby restaurant no matter where they are in the city. “When you want to try a new restaurant with your family or are out shopping and want to see what’s close by, you can go to EatLafayette.com and find a list of local restaurants. We have so much to choose from no matter what part of town you're in.” The opening weekend of EatLafayette coincides with the Lt. Governor’s 12th Annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off June 18 at the Cajundome, where the reigning King of American Seafood, Chef Ryan Trahan of Lafayette’s Blue Dog Café, will crown this year’s winner.

Zydeco Extravaganza Comes to Lafayette May 26 If the “Happiest City in America” had a soundtrack, zydeco would dominate the playlist. The down-home, upbeat tempo of the accordion, washboard, guitar, and drums just makes you want to get up and dance your troubles away. Tourists and locals alike flock to local dance halls around Lafayette each week to get their fill of Zydeco music. And setting the gold standard for the past 33 years is Zydeco Extravaganza, the world’s largest one-day zydeco festival. “On May 26, we’re featuring eight to 10 artists over 12 hours—it’s a musical marathon,” says festival organizer Dustin Cravins, whose family started the festival in 1987 to revive the Creole culture in nearby St. Landry Parish and surrounding areas. Both of Cravins’ parents are Creole and spoke French before English. From his parents to his cousins, Cravins’ entire family is passionate about Zydeco music and loves sharing their culture each year at the event. “There are many definitions of what is Creole, but for me, Creoles are French-speaking people of color in Louisiana with five things that tie us together and make us a culture: our language, food, music, the land, and our Catholic faith.” Zydeco music was founded by Louisiana Creole musician Amédé Ardoin in the 1920s, a time in Southwest Louisiana when people could escape their hardships with song and dance. “Before it was Zydeco, it was called la la music,” Cravins explains. “Ardoin lay the foundation, then Clifton Chenier incorporated the popular sounds of his time, which was rhythm and blues. Zydeco has evolved over the years, but the rub board and accordion are still prominent.” This year’s festival will include one of Amédé Ardoin’s relatives, Chris Ardoin, as well as other popular artists such as Keith Frank, J. Paul Jr. and a half-dozen others. Another popular event is the annual amateur accordion competition, giving up-and-coming musicians the chance to perform on stage—some for the first time. “We have many nicknames for the festival, like Creole Coachella, The Granddaddy of Them All, and Where Legends Are Born,” Cravins says. “Some of the best musicians in the Zydeco community come out, and they all try to outdo one another. They lay it all on the line. The audiences really get the benefit of seeing their greatest performances.” Of course, no Zydeco festival could be complete without Creole food, and Cravins assures there will be plenty to go around. Zydeco Extravaganza will feature the Cravins’ family food truck, Cravin’ Boudin, along with other vendors selling everything from red beans and rice and jambalaya to an array of Louisiana specialties. “We want to present a truly Creole product that’s very authentic and represents everything about who we are,” says Cravins. The event will be held indoors at Blackham Coliseum. Presale tickets are $20 and can be purchased at ZydecoExtra.com or by calling (337) 234-9695.
