Celebrating

Cajun Culture South Louisiana is home to one of the most unique and authentic cultures in the country. The area was settled in the late 1700s by Acadians—French-Catholic refugees from Acadie, Canada—who were exiled by the British Crown. Seeking religious and cultural freedom, they started a new life on the bayous of Louisiana, creating many rich Cajun traditions centered around food, music, family, and faith.

LAFAYETTE CONVENTION AND VISITORS COMMISSION

· 2019

While visitors today have ample opportunities to experience Cajun culture, one of the best ways to truly immerse themselves is at Vermilionville’s Acadian Culture Day on Sunday, August 11. Vermilionville waives its admission for the event, opening the doors to its 23-acre historic park. The public can visit original structures dating from 1765 to 1890, participate in discussions and presentations, watch historical demonstrations, and listen to great Cajun music. Food will be available for purchase at special pop-up tents as well as at the on-site restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, which will offer a full buffet of Cajun and Creole specialties like bread pudding, chicken and sausage gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etouffee and red beans and rice. “Our theme this year is Les Femmes du Folklore to celebrate women in history—their role back then and how they are changing the culture today,” says Brady McKellar, Director of Museum Operations at Vermilionville. “Throughout the day, we’ll offer various films, presentations, and music led by women.” Children can experience the lively Cajun culture through arts and crafts projects, black pot cooking demonstrations, and a ride up the Vermilion River on an Acadian school boat. Artisans will also be on hand, creating quilts and rag dolls. “Learning about an area’s history is most effective when it’s hands-on and fun,” says Abigail Ricks, a local teacher, and mother of two. “Vermilionville’s events are always wonderful to attend. Guests can really experience what life was like centuries ago as they walk through the park with costumed guides and historical activities. Plus, there’s always great Cajun food and music.” Concerts will be held throughout the day in the pavilion along with an Open Cajun Jam, where anyone with an instrument is invited to pull up a chair and play. Visitors are welcome to watch the colorful impromptu performances, which include such instruments as the accordion, fiddle, guitar, and washboard. The event will be held on Sunday, August 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Vermilionville located at 300 Fisher Road near the Lafayette Regional Airport.

Raise a Glass

Craft Beer There's no better pairing than a hot Louisiana night with a cold craft beer. On July 20, Acadiana's premier beer festival, Gulf Brew, will be pouring some of the state's most popular beer and serving up great food and music. All of the proceeds benefit downtown Lafayette's Acadiana Center for the Arts and its popular Louisiana Crossroads music series, held from September through March every year.

38

LAFAYETTE CONVENTION AND VISITORS COMMISSION

¡ 2019

"Gulf Brew began with 13 beers in our parking lot 11 years ago when craft beer was just coming onto the scene," says Brian Crutchfield, Special Events Director for Acadiana Center for the Arts. At the inaugural event, the beer ran out in just one hour. Over the years, Gulf Brew attracted more and more people, outgrowing several locations before landing at Blackham Coliseum with more than 300 types of beer. The event's popularity is a testament that the craft beer movement isn't losing momentum anytime soon, especially in a culinary destination like Lafayette. "For visitors coming from out of town, Gulf Brew is really a great way to try some of our favorite craft beer here in Louisiana," says Crutchfield. "All of the major breweries will be here." Two of Acadiana's most renowned breweries, Bayou Teche Brewing and Parish Brewing Co., will be attending the festival again this year. Bayou Teche Brewing is a popular brewery and hangout in Arnaudville where it produces Rajun' Cajuns Ale. Parish Brewing Co. out of Broussard produces the best-selling Canebrake, including Strawberry Canebrake for summer.

Some of the other top breweries from around Louisiana will also be participating in this year's Gulf Brew, including Abita from St. Tammany Parish, Tin Roof from Baton Rouge, NOLA from New Orleans, Great Raft from Shreveport and Crying Eagle from Lake Charles. Beer lovers can also try homebrews created by the Dead Yeast Society as well as watch a few DIY demonstrations. "Participating in Gulf Brew is a win-win for us," says William McGehee, who owns Tin Roof with his wife Cammy, a Lafayette native. "Not only do we get to share our great beer with Acadiana, but we are supporting the AcA, the cultural music and arts hub for Lafayette. It's always a really fun event." Outside the Coliseum, a half dozen food trucks will be lined up, serving everything from traditional Cajun cuisine to tacos and farm-to-table fare. The event will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. General admission tickets are $50 and provide access to all 300 samples. A VIP Package is available for $75, which includes an early access hour and a VIP gift.

For more information, go to LafayetteTravel.com/Gulf-Brew. And as they say in Cajun Country, "Laissez les bon temps Rouler!" Let the good times roll.

Cajun Country is world-famous when it comes to food. While we’re known for savory specialties like boudin, crawfish and jambalaya, Cajuns also have a pretty serious sweet tooth. No Acadiana meal is complete without indulging in dessert. Here are a few sweet treats everyone in the family will enjoy.

Louisiana Sno Balls

This ice-cold treat is the perfect antidote to a hot summer day. Invented by a New Orleans man in the 1930s, sno balls remain a statewide staple. Louisiana harvests literally tons of sugar each year, and pure cane syrup is what makes sno balls so good. Open from April to September, Murph’s Olde Tyme Snowball Stand is a local favorite, located near the University of Louisiana. (218 W. Saint Mary Blvd.) Open year-round, Cajun Sno is so popular, lines start forming right after the school bell rings. Sno balls even come stuffed with Blue Bell ice cream for the ultimate brain freeze. (4303 Johnston St.)

King Cake

Popular at Mardi Gras, these divine pastries are a must on any trip to Louisiana. Even if you’re not here for Carnival Season, you can special order king cakes year-round, usually with a 48-hour notice. Stop into Poupart’s Bakery, founded in 1967 by French native Francois Poupart, for a wonderful selection of pastries year-round as well as a traditional French-style king cake. (100 E. Vermilion St.; 102 W. Pinhook Road). Another heavy hitter, Keller’s Bakery has roots dating back to 1895 when Victor Keller opened the family’s first bakery in nearby Abbeville. Now located in downtown Lafayette, Keller’s produces homemade treats as well as hundreds of king cakes each day during Mardi Gras. (1012 Jefferson St.)

Beignets

17th-century French settlers brought beignets with them to Acadia, Canada and then later to Louisiana where they eventually landed. The square-shaped, deep-fried airy doughnut topped with powered sugar is ideal for breakfast or an anytime treat. You can enjoy beignets under the oak trees Saturday mornings at The Lafayette Farmers & Artisans Market, where they’re made to order. (2913 Johnston St.) Local breakfast joint T Coons is another go-to spot for warm beignets that are finger-licking good. (1900 W. Pinhook Road)

Doughnuts

Lafayette folks are fiercely loyal when it comes to their hometown doughnut shops. Locals brag that Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts wouldn’t dare open shop here because they wouldn’t make it. Two popular stops are Meche’s Donuts (rickeymechesdonutking.com) and Cajun Market Donut Company (cajunmarketdonut.com), both with multiple locations. Opened in the late ‘60s, the

Original Rickey Meche’s Donut King is more popular than ever, serving fresh doughnuts, king cakes and kolaches. Cajun Market Donut Company serves more than a dozen types of doughnuts and doughnut holes including maple bacon, turtle and Bavarian cream.

Ice Cream

There’s nothing sweeter than nostalgia, and Borden’s dishes out plenty. The last remaining Borden’s shop in the world, the downtown Lafayette landmark has been popular since 1940. Patrons can choose from two dozen flavors of ice cream and sherbet plus hand-spun milkshakes, malts and even cold Borden’s milk right out the machine. (1103 Jefferson St.) A block down the street is Carpe Diem, a gelato and espresso bar that’s the perfect pick-me-up for both kids and parents. (812 Jefferson St.) Known for their burgers since 1947, Judice Inn’s milkshakes are also not to be missed, served in the family-owned casual diner. (3134 Johnston St.)
