Breaux Bridge not only ranked #7 on Southern Living’s list of best food towns, it just so happens to be the Crawfish Capital of the World. Fresh Louisiana crawfish is in season during late winter and spring, and one of the best ways to enjoy it is at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. The festival was named a Top 10 Food Festival by USA Today and a local tradition since 1960. Festival-goers can enjoy crawfish cooked every way imaginable. Boiled crawfish will be available in a four-pound box along with popular crawfish dishes like étouffée, crawfish bisque, crawfish pie, and crawdogs, to name a few. Other Louisiana specialties include jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, and shrimp dishes. The festival is also center stage for the area’s best Zydeco, Swamp Pop, and Cajun music. Throughout the weekend, 30 acts will perform, several of them GRAMMY winners. Other activities include cooking demonstrations, an arts-and-crafts fair, Cajun dance lessons, and a crawfish eating contest as well as entertainment for children. “This year, we’re excited to work in conjunction with the library to offer some special programs with the kids,” says festival organizer Mark Bernard. “They also love the carnival, of course, where we have 30-35 rides of all sizes. The crawfish races on Saturday and the parade with our Crawfish Queen on Sunday morning are also lots of fun for the whole family.” The Crawfish Festival is held at Parc Hardy in Breaux Bridge. Tickets are $5 for a day pass on Friday and Sunday and $10 on Saturday. Three-day passes are available for $15. To learn more, visit BBCrawfest.com.

June 27
Teche Brewing was just the third brewery to open in Louisiana 11 years ago. According to Knott, there are now 39 breweries in every part of the state. This is a testament that the craft beer movement isn't losing momentum anytime soon, especially in a culinary and tourism destination like Louisiana.
JUNE'S
w e r B Gulf e than mo s e s a c show
"Beer tourism is an international trend—visitors want to sample what each local region has to offer," says Knott. Gulf Brew is the perfect event for beer aficionados, with more than 200 types of beer, from all over the state, all under one roof. Just as music and food are a vital part of Louisiana's culture, they're the perfect complement to the beer festival. Headlining Gulf Brew this year will be local favorites Julian Primeaux and DG & the Freetown Sound. A half-dozen food trucks will also be on-site, offering everything from Cajun cuisine to tacos and farm-to-table fare.

The event is hosted by Lafayette's Acadiana Center for the Arts, with all proceeds benefiting their cultural programs like their Louisiana Crossroads music series.
There's nothing quite like a cold beer on a Louisiana summer night. Coming up on June 27, beer lovers can escape the heat and experience one of the South's largest craft beer festivals at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette.
"Our main goal is fostering arts and culture in Acadiana. We're able to do this because of our wonderful supporters and people who come out to fundraisers like Gulf Brew," says Meagan Mod, Development Coordinator for the AcA. "Each year, we host around 100 different types of performances and exhibits and reach hundreds of thousands of people."
Two of Acadiana's most renowned breweries, Bayou Teche Brewing and Parish Brewing, will be attending the festival again this year as well as major distributors like Schilling and Crescent Crown. Parish Brewing out of Broussard produces the best-selling Canebrake, including Strawberry Canebrake, for summer. Bayou Teche Brewing is a popular brewery and hangout in Arnaudville, where it produces Ragin' Cajuns Ale and Swamp Thing IPA.
For more information, call the Acadiana Center for the Arts at (337) 233-7060 or visit LafayetteTravel.com/Gulf-Brew.
Karlos Knott, brewmaster and president of Bayou Teche Brewing as well as president of the statewide Brewery Guild, says the festival is an annual highlight. "We do a lot of festivals around the state and around the country, but there's something special about Gulf Brew," says Knott. "In Lafayette, people like to have a good time. They're dancing, eating and drinking. It's a great party. It's one of my favorite festivals every year."

Cultural Enrichment
Sponsored by
Just because the kids are out of school doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. The area’s unique culture brings history, literature, art, and music to life. St. Martinville Cultural Heritage Center shares the stories and struggles of early Acadians as well as the arrival of African slaves and free people of color. Nearby is one of the oldest Catholic churches in America, St. Martin de Tours Church. Established by Acadians in 1765, the church features a statue of Evangeline, the Acadian heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem. In Breaux Bridge, the Teche Center for the Arts showcases and preserves Creole and Cajun culture in Acadiana through events, exhibits, and programs. In Arnaudville, Deux Bayous Gallery, a program of NuNu Arts & Culture Collective, showcases local paintings, art, pottery, books, lighting, and creative gifts. Zydeco music can also be heard at a variety of venues around the region, like Buck and Johnny’s in Breaux Bridge on Saturday mornings and Bayou Teche Brewery in Arnaudville on Sunday afternoons.

Zydeco music was started by Louisiana Creole musician Amédé Ardoin in the 1920s, a time when people could escape their hardships with song and dance. His sound inspired Clifton Chenier, another South Louisiana musician who brought Zydeco music to worldwide fame. In its humble beginnings, Zydeco music featured simple instruments musicians had on hand, like the accordion, washboard, and fiddle. Today's Zydeco music might also include the bass guitar and drums. Zydeco music then and now is often sung in the area's native French, and its upbeat tempo is perfect for dancing.

"Zydeco can withstand the test of time because it's an evolving art," says Cravins. "It's impressive that you have these innovators like Keith Frank and Chris Ardoin who can make original music that's relevant in 2020 but still very much authentically Zydeco. They are a gift to our culture to be able to do it so well." Headliner Chris Ardoin is a distant cousin of Amédé Ardoin. His album Press Play Live was released in March and made the iTunes Top 100 World Music Albums.
Every Memorial Day weekend in Lafayette, locals, and visitors look forward to celebrating Louisiana's Creole culture with some of the best Zydeco music in the world. For the 34th year running, Zydeco Extravaganza will shine the spotlight on Lafayette's renowned music and authentic food.
The event will feature a half dozen other acts throughout the day along with the Amateur Accordion Contest, giving up-and-coming musicians the chance to perform on stage. Zydeco Extravaganza will also include world-famous Creole cuisines, like red beans and rice and jambalaya. The Cravins are also bringing their food truck, Cravin' Boudin. The family has been passing down their boudin recipe for at least five generations, says Cravins. Popular food truck items include their original boudin, the bon temps boudin ball with crumbled cracklin and local Steen's pure cane syrup as well as the boudin melt with pepper jack cheese.
Local radio personality Charles Cravins founded the festival in 1987 to revive the Creole culture in Southern Louisiana and honor his heritage—his ancestors have been in the area since 1764. His son, Dustin, has taken the reins in recent years to continue the festival as well as recruit a new generation of fans. "This year, we're excited to have Chris Ardoin and Keith Frank headline for us again," says Dustin Cravins. "Attendees will not only get to hear their favorite hits and classics but brand-new stuff as well."
"Creoles are French-speaking people of color, and there are five characteristics that define our culture," explains Cravins. "Number one is food, two is our language, three is our Catholic faith, four is the land, and five of course is the music."
The event location had not been announced at the time of printing. For more information, visit LafayetteTravel.com/Zydeco-Extravaganza.

This time of year, birdwatchers can expect to see ducks, anhinga, herons, spoonbill, osprey, red-tail hawks, cuckoos, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds—to name a few—as well as Edward’s beloved snowy egrets. Groups can request an expert-led guided tour in advance or take the self-led cell phone tour and drive the three-mile loop through the garden’s 15 stops.

Explore Jungle Gardens on Avery Island
For more information, visit JungleGardens.org or call (337) 369-6243.
Many tourists head straight to Avery Island for the world-famous TABASCO® plant and completely miss the neighboring property of Jungle Gardens, one of the most picturesque spots on the Gulf Coast. Turning onto the gravel path into Jungle Gardens, the scenery looks like something out of a film. The majestic oak trees, dripping with Spanish moss, form a canopy over the road. Some of the trees are so ancient and massive, they appear to be resting their branches on the ground. Take a moment to observe the surroundings, and you’ll likely spot a deer grazing on the grass or a lazy alligator sunning on the banks of the bayou. In these lush surroundings away from the rest of the world, time feels like it’s standing still. Jungle Gardens was created by Edward McIlhenny, the son of TABASCO® founder Edmund McIlhenny and Mary Eliza Avery. Growing up on his family’s 2,200-acre estate, Edward fell in love with the natural setting of Avery Island. Around 1895 at the age of 23, he founded a private bird sanctuary on the property and hand-raised several nearly extinct snowy egrets. By 1911, Ned estimated that 100,000 birds were nesting there. His conservation efforts earned the attention of former President Teddy Roosevelt, who visited Avery Island in 1915. Along with pepper plants needed for TABASCO® sauce, Edward planted and cultivated more than 100 varieties of camellias, 64 varieties of bamboo, and countless exotic botanicals from all over the world. He also took measures to bring back the white-tail deer population.
40
In 1935, Ned opened his backyard sanctuary to the public. Today, visitors are invited to admire the 170-acre semitropical garden. During the hot summer months, Jungle Gardens can be explored by car. Although several highlights should be seen by foot, like the magnificent 900-year-old Buddha statue along with Ned’s Bird City, CONVENTION which is still thriving. LAFAYETTE AND VISITORS COMMISSION
