s n o s Rea Why
1a0fayette Lis the st e i p p Ha City Lafayette has been named the Happiest City in the US by the Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch. The people here have a pure joy of life. Visiting the heart of Acadiana, you'll feel the joie de vivre in the friendliness of the people, the warmth of the hospitality, the amazing comfort foods, and the electric energy of the music. Here are 10 things that make Lafayette happy.
Family-Friendly
Acadiana is exceptionally family-friendly. Children are welcome at restaurants, attractions, and festivals. You'll find many fun-filled activities from putt-putt and trampoline parks to sports complexes, splash pads, a children's museum, and a science museum.
People
In the mid-1700s, the area was settled by refugees, expelled from their homes in Acadie, Canada. Against all the odds and 2,000 miles from their home, they were determined to start a new and better life—and their spirit remains today.
Great Climate
South Louisiana summers are filled with sunshine and winters are mild and comfortable, rarely dipping below 50 degrees.
Affordability
Lafayette's hotels, attractions, and restaurants offer more reasonable prices than neighboring cities, so visitors and locals get a lot more 7
French Culture
Because of its French-Canadian ancestry, Lafayette feels like a little pocket of France that's not too far from home. French immersion is offered at local public schools, a French music festival is held each April, and on stages around town, many musicians sing in French. It's not uncommon to hear locals speaking a little Cajun French with expressions like cher bebe (how precious) and laissez les bons temps rouler (let the good times roll) and c'est bien (that's good).
Music
Acadiana is home to Cajun, Zydeco, and Swamp Pop music played with instruments like washboards, accordions, triangles, and fiddles. Local musicians have won an impressive 16 GRAMMY awards. Head to one of the many dancehalls or live music venues for a foot-stomping good time.
Festivals
Every week of the year, you're bound to find a festival in Acadiana. Locals celebrate everything from music, art and food to shrimp, crawfish and frogs. Festival International de Louisiane in the spring hosts hundreds of performing and visual artists from some 15 French-speaking countries around the world. Festivals Acadiens et CrĂŠoles celebrates local culture with food, music, art, and dance every fall in October.
8
Arts
Lafayette's rich history, culture, and scenery provide perpetual inspiration for the arts. Lafayette is home to a symphony orchestra, the Hilliard Art Museum, the Heymann Performing Arts Center, Acadiana Center for the Arts, and a plethora of local galleries. Notable natives include world-renown "Blue Dog" artist George Rodrigue and architect A. Hays Town.
Small Town Charm Lafayette exudes small-town charm with its quaint and walkable downtown, designed in the 1800s. Nearby towns like Breaux Bridge and New Iberia also offer main streets with local shops and restaurants worth exploring.
TABASCO
Every meal is made better with TABASCO sauce, which is produced right here in Acadiana. Visit the local factory, explore the nearby gardens, then stock up on the various flavors of TABASCO so you never have to eat a bland meal again. 9

THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF ® TABASCO
No doubt you’ve heard of—and tasted—the world-famous TABASCO® sauce. But you probably don’t know the entire story behind the brand or the McIlhenny family, who still runs the company today on Avery Island, Louisiana. The story of one of the country’s oldest family-owned-and-operated companies begins with Edmund McIlhenny. After the South’s banking industry crashed following the Civil War, Edmund and his wife Mary Eliza Avery moved back home with her parents. On Avery Island—just north of the Gulf of Mexico and about 140 miles west of New Orleans—Edmund began growing peppers. Then, adding salt mined from a massive onsite salt dome, along with a little vinegar, he invented TABASCO® sauce in 1868. He started selling his sauce across the Gulf Coast, before expanding to New York, Philadelphia, and Boston by the early 1870s. Edmund and Mary Eliza had 10 children, and today there are more than 100 shareholding McIlhenny heirs. The company is now run by Edmund’s great-great-grandson, with many other fifth and sixth generation family members actively involved. After Edmund died in 1890, his son John took over the business. John left Avery Island in 1898 to join Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. He later served Louisiana’s House of Representatives and the state Senate as well as Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson on the United States Civil Service Commission. Meanwhile, John’s younger brother, Ned, had been running the business. Ned, a naturalist, and ornithologist founded a private bird sanctuary on Avery Island and hand-raised several nearly extinct snowy egrets. By 1911, Ned estimated that 100,000 birds were nesting there. He also helped bring back the white-tail deer population, published essential works on the American alligator, documented flora and fauna, and planted more than 400 varieties of camellias. In 1935, Ned opened his bird sanctuary and garden to the public. Today, visitors can still explore the 170-acre Jungle Gardens

and Ned’s Bird City. Ned died in 1949 at the age of 77, and John’s son Walter took over the company. In 1967, Walter began grooming his cousin Paul McIlhenny, who led the company until his death in 2013. Anthony “Tony” Simmons, one of Edmund’s great-great-grandsons, then became the company’s sixth president. In 2019, Harold Osborn, another greatgreat-grandson, was named president and CEO. “I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to lead this great company alongside the McIlhenny family,” Osborn said. “It has been a privilege to carry on my great-great-grandfather’s legacy and to culminate my time with the company by celebrating its 150th anniversary around the world. It’s exciting to imagine what’s in store for the next 150 years.” TABASCO® brand products are sold in more than 185 countries. Edmund’s original recipe is still used today. Visitors may learn about the history and production of TABASCO® and the McIlhenny family on daily tours offered at the factory and Jungle Gardens.

LAFAYETTE CONVENTION AND VISITORS COMMISSION
· 2020
Right in the heart of Cajun Country is St. Martin Parish, home of the original Acadian settlement in the 1750s and one of the most authentic cultures in America. While you can enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities, incredible music, and historical attractions, one of the best ways to experience Cajun and Creole culture is through your tastebuds. Mange is the French word for eat, and during Mange St. Martin through Sept. 30, the tastiest lo-cally-owned restaurants and food businesses offer outstanding specials. The tiny town of Arnaudville offers big flavors, and just down the Bayou Teche is Breaux Bridge, one of Southern Living's top foodie towns. The scenic community of Henderson offers delicious cuisine with views of the Atchafalaya, while St. Martinville exudes Southern charm and hospitality. Along this incredibly rich corridor, you'll sample and savor everything from praline chicken and waffles, fresh seafood, boudin, shrimp and grits, and po'boys to icy snoballs, local craft beer and cold cock-tails enjoyed right on the water. "Food is central to the culture here in St. Martin Parish," says Dona Degatur Richard, Director of St. Martin Parish Tourism Commission. "Food not only provides nourishment, but it also brings us to-gether and awakens our souls. Food is everything to us. It's not just about a meal. It's a way of life. When you dine with us, you'll experience the difference."
