LagalerĂademagdalena: #UrbanGifts
Lagaleriademagdalena Lagaleriademagdalena is a micro-urban planning project and an example of citizen empowerment in which two young architects reinterprete undervalued public spaces, such as construction sites fences or plots, to turn them into spaces of opportunity generating ephemeral art galleries, with the peculiarity that everything exhi bited is given away to the pedestrian. This is what we call #RegalosUrbanos (#UrbanGifts in english). We build up city based on ordering and optimizing the urban existing resources. Our 'art galleries' emerge on the construction works of other architects and disappear when the buildings are completed. A linear element with which we coexist habitually, that serves to delimit ' not ended’ places, turns into an opportunity of social exchange, a laboratory of creation, a relational cultural platform. These pop-up exhibits foment community and interactivity actting as a connecion between citizens and art. Besides, one of the main motivations behind lagaleriademagdalena’s efforts is to give the public the gift of happiness. Every person who stops, that observes, knows, that takes away an #UrbanGift from our gallery, experiences a small change and lives the urban space in a way better than they did before. who In less than a year many artists began to write us asking to exhibit in our gallery! and we have a calendar of exhibitions ful l of people willing to exhibit/give away what they do. That indicates that we are covering a social lack of importance in the current urban life. Nowadays we involve social activism by creating platforms where everybody can send what they want to exhibit (crowd-curated and crowd-exhibits projects) Crowdcurated content that increases the viral diffusion and the creation of interconnections person to person

OCCUPIED AND EMPTY DWELLINGS
SQUARES, GREEN AREAS AND PLOTS
Today we faced a hard social scene and a crisis situation where ill systems spread creating negative environment. However, a resilience status can be reach by optimizing existing resources and art being main agent towards a new social scope. We first have a whole city structure available: roads and sidewalks;; indivi- dual or collective houses;; equipment and singu- lar buildings such as town hall, church, hospital or school;; also green areas often consisting on gaps between roads which evolves through non-sites;; squares or traffic circles;; urban holes such as building plots;; cinemas, bars, drugsto- res, … besides fences and scaffolding found on building sites;; urban furniture;; shelters;; bollards;; benches;; streetlamps;; fountains, … Are these being well used?
FACILITIES AND SITES OF INTEREST
lagaleriademagdalena convert threats into opportunities and weaknesses in resources
Why not using what is already built in order to promoting contemporary art? Existing urban structure can be ideal for exhibiting! There is no need to build any model, all required can be found on current scope. Transforming urban environment integrating art and culture into citizen daily life could really be an innovative option. In this way, art could be domestic, easy to handle with and accessible for all. Why not optimizing existing structures and using current elements as powerful creative and art platforms? Why not seeing an exhibition that takes places on a hospital, or a bakeshop, or on the street or a square, on bus stop shelters or scaffoldings? Existing elements then create synergy in-between and re-activate changing day-to-day citizen life. It would create an active citizenship, with territorial links and more commit- ted to their city.

The project in New York The proposal Our proposal is to develop a new public space management model using Art as a means of communication. Firstly mapping potential public space locations where we could build up an art gallery (not constructed in strict sense) in which all works exhibited are given passers-by as #UrbanGifts achieving a comfortable scope able to generate a community around Art. Objective Schedule: 1. Establishing take-Art-to-street habit: - Taking out art from institutions to the streets making it closer and handy to pedestrians. - Working around the ‘Giving’ concept as a curative experience. To give public the gift of happiness. - Turning an uncomfortable location into a place where people gather and share experiences. - Promoting culture as a key factor for change and improvement in quality of life. 2. Generating exhibitions network with NYC local artists. - Providing an opportunity for emerging artists to exhibit their works. - Promoting audience participation and opening their minds into an artistic prejudice-less vision. 3. Joining other project residents and proposing the gallery as potencial generator of a community where knowledge is shared and given away. - Generating a inter-cultural cross-generational community around the project. Pop-Up exhibitions foment community and interactivity. - Promoting global move around the possibilities in the public space. 4. Realizing exhibitions completely open to audience, using digital and social networks platforms; also developing a crowd-exhibit model now in process. - Developing the project in the context thank to action and collective creation involving a wide variety of actors. We seek a social utility generating a framework for the exchange of knowledge and experience. - Carrying digital community to the face-to-face one and vice versa. 5. Providing new tools and ways of generating a management model in aim to being repeated indefinitely. - Linking contemporary art to today´s society
Line of work The spaces of the city undervalued, such as on-site buildings, fences or plots, are for us an opportunnity to create. These are places we face everyday and we turn them into places for citizens through the creation of ephemeral art galleries. We optimize existing resources while solving social deprivation. Currently the art is not friendly to the majority, and we believe that the idea of creating a gallery on the street is a good way to introduce art in our lives. On the other hand, everything exhibited is given to pedestrian for free as #UrbanGifts. This implies a way of conceiving the exhibition completely different than a conventional gallery. In fact everybody can exhibit on the street, and there is no better place to experiment your ideas and instantly know the response of the people. Giving is an act which seems to be taken in: “nobody gives you anything for free” but we have confirmed that “giving” is an act that makes us happier. We experiment happines when someone takes our artwork and It is much more exciting when is someone unknown the one who takes an #UrbanGift. Although they are gifts, it is false nothing returns to us, because we always experience a shot of instant happiness. Moreover “gifted-person” also feels happy and at the same time confused. Another of our premises is: not to damage surfaces on which we act, so we always use minimalistic affordable fixing systems.
General methodology Promote optimism: through creative processes of social innovation where shared purpose and citizen participation are key pieces to get a a positive living and working environment. Collective intelligence and network thinking: our projects are based on the idea of co-creative processes, taking adventage of the knowledge, expertise and practical know-how of all nodes (companies, creatives and the general public). Syntagmatic and paradigmatic structures: the relationships between stakeholders will be supported on horizontal structures of creative addition (syntagmatic) where the project will grow thanks to the sum of the team’s ideas; and in vertical structures (paradigmatic) where the experiences among individuals grow thanks to contact beetwen various experts in specific niches, what produces new ways of learning, research and creation and results so different to the usual. Create a physical-digital community: the projects will aim to generate community. A community that identifies with the results of the creative processes, a community that can contribute an added value. This community can be formed and add value both face-to-face and digital. The digital community, made up of active nodes of the project that make use of social networks, can extend it and generate constant and new opportunities.
Finally we are in favour of continuous on-going management versus isolated event. Lagaleriademagdalena is a social project: exhibitions are the excuse to build up a growing community both in physical and digital areas. Generating the habit in a place makes people identify with that place. Suddenly the fence turns into a place where assistants gather, speak with the artists, take an #UrbanGift, hang it on a wall at home, hanging on twitter a photo of the #UrbanGift in your house so the artist can see it, and start to grow bond between total strangers. -04-
Our values and capabilities: 1. Hapiness and optimism Our street interventions have the same common factor, they all are an atractor of hapiness and optimism focus that connect very different people. We know the intervention becomes into a successfull action when an undervalue and forgotten urban space becomes into a place where people meet people, talks with others, share knowledge... Searching new ways for living the public space. Pop-up interventions encourage community and creates affection links between people and people and between people and the plot. An example is the intervention we have done on a plot of Barcelona during the Eme3 international public space festival. We first did a photocall for the festival attendees which get into a box for taking the photograph. So we made a faces’s boxes 'built'. And the wall was covered by the joy and smiles of the participants at the photocall, transforming a dirty and abandoned corner into a place that radiates happiness, collaboration and creativity, a gift for the pedestrians intervention.

2. Ability to convene and connecting people
4. Analogical and digital hibridation
LaGaleriadeMagdalena has evolved into a growing proactive community always reformulating social relationships and creating diverse interpersonal links. In that way, thanks to direct contact with street audience, invisible links between unknown attendees are created: a community around a common public place. Besides Crowdcurating and Crowdexhibition models have been put into practice via internetbased platforms (every one wo wants could upload contents into the platforms and then all that content is being exhibited and given as #UrbanGifts on street). It consists on a participative exhibition model based on an audience which is content-generator besides being only a spectator. This helps people to identify with the project. Society and contemporary art shoud not be independent, theyshould be joint in same direction. Lagaleriademagdalena introduces contemporary art into citizen life, just by using public space. Public is public, it’s a commons, and we forget it all the time.
We work in the physical by using concepts of digital and vice versa. Analogical works as the right side of the brain does: with emotional links, empathy, synphony; and digital as the left side does: it´s analytical, effective and organized. So both together are the perfect couple.
3. Possibility of Simultaneity Hybridation between physical and digital scopes allows attendees to be part of exhibitions despite being far away, also to share knowledge at broad scale and even to carry several exhibitions out simultaneously in different locations. The project could be brought to any place where unused spaces and a person responsible of management were found.
One of our hibridation example is ‘Magdaupload’: the closing of the Web MEGAUPLOAD open the discussion about to share information on internet, when there is no an economical profit. We move this discussion from the network to a real physical environment by the creation of a collaborative exchange of files space: a new concept of P2P (we propose person to person instead of peer to peer): we record series in 44 dvds then we take the 44 dvds to the street and we propose people can take what they want, so they could record the content of the dvd on their computers and after that, they could bring back the dvd so another user could enjoy with the series in their house, they can also bring another data to the analogical wall. -06-
Pro-commons and the city Sharing knowledge is part of Network nature; however in physical scope it is more difficult to find initiatives exploring how to spread and replicate themselves and they are based on a centralized network growth around base project. LaGaleriadeMagdalena works in decentralized system scope in which each focus diversifies being able to catalyze new projects; although LaGaleriadeMagdalena’s aim is in fact to be a node part of distributed network full of replications able to grow themselves. For all this, we promote people creating their own public galleries generating on balance an exhition rhizome.

Looking for a location with a surface to create your art-gallery. It could be either a work fence or a plot in your neighborhood.
Once you have a place to make your pop-up gallery on the street, contact with several artists who want to exhibit their artworks and don’t mind giving them for free to the pedestrian.
Take recycled material for creating your artworks and look for cheap restraints systems that don´t damage the surface as double-sided tape, magnet, Velcro, hooks...

Types of exhibition: 1. #UrbanGifts As we said before , everything that is exhibited in our ‘gallery’ is there for the taking to the pedestrian as #UrbanGifts. So the first type of exhibitions consists on develop ‘desire objects’ for the people. The challenge is to find the best way to show our artworks with very cheap or recycled materials. We are not in a conventional gallery so the materials shoud be according with the street. We have to think in the weather and how we are going to save our artworks if it rains or winds. We work around the concept of ‘giving’ because to give is healing, not only for the ‘given people’ but also for the artists that gives their artworks for free. The experience is very emotional for everybody and we think that we get, in a way, that people are happier for a day, for a moment. And this is wonderfull.

Types of exhibition: 2. #InteractiveInterventions We love to make exhibitions only with the only claim that people can play on the street. The ephemeral exhibits usually occur on metal shutters or walls in construction sites, attaching the works magnetically, avoiding harm to the walls and allowing for easy removal and replacement by passers-by which also makes the interventions vandalism-free, allowing us to occur in the light of day, unlike most street artists. One of our periodical exhibits La Nevera Urbana (Urban Fridge) exhibition is made up of cut-out words from various concert posters of the street, after we stick the words onto the carboards and finally we stick the magnet behind, so we make magnetic words with an urban scale, urging the public to play with the words like magnetic poetry on your fridge. The exhibit Tangrams, or Mister Magdaleno (like Mister Potato) offered similar play. This type of interventions in the street always last more than the #UrbanGifts so people can play with the installation a lot of time. This interventions are very popular and they are in continuous changing. People is part of the art-piece! so we started to think people could be the whole art-piece, they could decide what to exhibit! so we started creating crowdcurating platforms.

Types of exhibition: 3. #Crowdcurated In the last times lagaleríademagdalena have been working on projects that allow citizen participation, creating a community that foment community and interactivity. We take advantage of the 2.0 world media to spread the opencall and to generate a network of participants; the content that people are providing is uploaded to a web page specially set up for the project that acts as the catalyst of the synergies generated among all the different people. In this case the content for exposure is chosen according to a system of crowdcurating, creating a personal link between the public and the project, spreading also through personal connections and the analog ways. After the online work we make a phisycal exhibition on a construction or underused site, with the material sent by the people, and in this way we jump from 2.0 to the public street.

As ARCO, famous annual Madrid Art Fair, was taking place, LaGaleríadeMagdalena created a parallel project called ARCOTANGENTE: a copyleft art digital gallery where anyone interested share some of his works (like in Spinoff-lagaleriademúsica). All contents are freely downloadable in high resolution in contrast to elevated ticket prices for official fair. Reproductions of works submitted in postalfree style were exhibited and given away on Sunday 17 February 2013 at Principe St scaffolding. Postcards included a web link to lagaleriadearcotangente.tumblr.com where all contents could be download. (music, video, photography, ilustration...).

Celebrating two years since LaGaleríadeMagdalena took its first steps, a special exhibition was planned: holding a nostalgic spirit, we collected a lot of old cassette cases trying to recover the most beautiful part of tape world consisting on recording 60 or 90 minutes of music for a friend, in those days when music was measured not in gigabytes but in minutes. This idea gave rise to the project lagaleriademúsica.tumblr.com, a participatory online platform where friends or famous musicians contribute with their own personal playlists. All playlists provided were taken physically to #EnCinta street exhibition. It consisted on more than a hundred tape cases attached with magnets to the metal fence of Teatro de la Comedia at Principe Street. Tape cases contained customized graphic covers and a link to digital playlist despite analog cassette tape. Platform is today working with more than 11300 followers.

Some of our interventions on plots and construction fences of Barcelona After the experience in Madrid, we moved to Barcelona for the International Public Space Festival (Eme3) and we propose thenaMa gement vs the Event, that concept works around the idea to create a community around what happens in the plots or fences in construction. So we create a network of street galleries with a program of exhibition for the Festival. We contacted with several local artist who wanted to exhibit theis artworks as #UrbanGifts, so when the Festival was finished, they could following the dynamic s initiated during eme3, establishing a management model based on neighborhood participation, and the energy of local artists.
