Exodus 20:8(Geneva), Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Of course, we are talking about the New Testament Sabbath, which is Sunday, the first day of the week, the day on which Christ rose from the grave, and the day on which the New Testament Church met for worship. But what does it mean to keep it holy? The word "holy" means to "set apart", so remembering the Sabbath to keep it holy, means to set the Sabbath apart as a special day. But, it is not a special day set apart for us; it is a special day set apart to worship God and to celebrate Christ. It is the way we honor God and put Him first at the beginning of our week. (Isaiah 58:13,14) Valley Reformed Church has been here for nine years and we identify with Reformed Baptist Churches and hold to the London Baptist Confession of 1689. Our Lord's Day emphasis is on worshiping God by the reading of Scripture, singing the old hymns, reading a Puritan prayer, listening to exegetical teaching that alternates between a book in the O.T. and a book in the N.T., hearing a strong evangelical message every fourth Lord's Day, and celebrating the Lord's Table. We are led by Elders who meet the criteria of I Timothy 3, and we meet as a family unit, with no Sunday School or children's church. We have no committees and we don't invent ways to make the gospel more appealing. Our people enjoy genuine Christian fellowship, because we are truly related in Christ and there is no place we would rather be. We have a mid-week Bible study and time of prayer, and our aim is for the older women to teach the younger women how to do practical things and how to love their husbands and manage their homes. We believe and follow the Biblical mandate that men should be leaders at home, as well as in the Church, with passionate love for their wives and families. OnCe again it iS time to Start the annual fire hydrant testing and maintenance program. The City of La Grande Public Works Department will be conducting these tests again this year starting April 11,2016. This program is very important to allow the public works department to identify the quantity of water available for firefighting purposes and it serves to rid the city's water distribution system of accumulations of sedimentation deposits over the past year. Citizens who experience any unusual water clarity problems after the hydrants are flushed are encouraged to turn on a cold-water faucet outside of the house and let it run for 5 to 10 minutes. This will normally clear up the agitated water from the service line to the home. Further problems may be referred to the La Grande Public Works Department by calling 962-1325. It's all hands on deck for Springer fishing in Portland Spring Chinook salmon fishing is in full swing in the Columbia River and Portland Harbor, with anglers posting some excellent catches over the past week. Chinook fishing below Bonneville is scheduled to continue through April 9 when Springer fishing shifts to above Bonneville and to the Willamette. Youth-only spring turkey hunting this weekend The youth spring turkey season is April 9-10. It's open to hunters age 17 and younger who have completed hunter education. Each young hunter needs to accompanied by an adult 21 years of age or older who cannot hunt. Bag limit is one male turkey or one turkey with a visible beard. Spring bear hunting underway Some seasons opened April 1, and the rest open April 15. Hunting tips and more information in the 2016 Spring Bear Hunting Forecast and also see district reports below. Reservoirs filling up nicely for spring fishing Reservoirs around the state are filling up nicely, which after last year's drought, bodes well for boat fishing prospects this year. Oregon offers many spectacular lakes and reservoirs where boat fishing is allowed and offer an array of interesting game fish to consider ... from the warm water variety such as bass, crappie and bass to big game species such as steelhead, brown trout, and salmon. Consider putting a reservoir, lake or two into your spring fishing plans. ODFW rolls out 'trophy trout' program at five Oregon fishing venues Thousands of extra-large hatchery rainbow trout will be released in several Oregon fishing holes this spring as the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife rolls out an enhanced "Trophy Trout" program this year to add a little juice to the spring trout season. More than 10,000 two-pound rainbows ranging from one to three pounds will be released at five locations around the state starting from now through May. Trophy Trout locations for 2016 are: Phillips Reservoir in Baker County, Willow Creek Reservoir in Morrow County, Timothy Lake in Clackamas County, Trojan Pond in Columbia County, and Garrison Lake in Curry County 36 Family Fishing Events happening this year These popular events take place in some great places and are typically stocked in advance with a lot of fish. On top of that, ODFW provides loaner rods, reels, tackle and bait, along with helpful tips from experienced angling instructors. List of events Winter steelhead fishing There is still excellent winter steelhead fishing to be had around the state but some fisheries have already seen their peaks — so get out while the getting is still good. Alert anglers will keep any eye on their favorite streams to look for the perfect combination of color, temperature, and flow. Introducing Premium Hunts — Apply by May 15 ODFW's new Premium Hunts give you the chance to draw a deer, elk or pronghorn tag with a months-long season. Premium Hunts are similar to the auction and raffle tags that people can pay thousands of dollars for, but cost the same as a regular tag. Apply by May 15. More info WALLOWA RIVER: steelhead, mountain whitefish The Wallowa River is fishing well and the bulk of a very healthy run is still to come. Biologists expect catch rates to be very good as the season progresses into the spring. This year's run of steelhead is one of the best in recent years and catch rates have been good throughout the season. Winter fishing between Minam and the mouth at Rondowa can be very good for anglers willing to walk. Remember, the new closure date for the Wallowa River steelhead fishery is now April 30. Year-round fishing for hatchery trout is now allowed under the 2016 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations. Remember, the Wallowa is also a whitefish factory and can produce some large fish. Whitefish are native to Oregon and are a respected sportfish across the west. Whitefish can be great in the smoker and are a great way to keep kids interested while steelhead fishing. To catch them, use beadhead nymphs a size ¹12-16 hook and fish for them in quick runs that are knee to waist deep. NORTHEAST ZONE HUNTING OPEN: COUGAR Wolves in Northeast Oregon Wolves are protected by state law and it is unlawful to shoot them. Coyote hunters in northeastern Oregon need to take extra care to identify their target as wolves can look like coyotes, especially wolf pups in the mid-summer and fall. Please report any wolf sightings or wolf sign to La Grande office (541) 963-2138 or online with the Wolf Reporting Form. Use the Oregon Hunting Map to see where to hunt. UNION COUNTY Cougars are common in Union County. Focus on game rich areas with long ridgelines or saddles that cats typically travel. Setting up downwind of a deer or elk killed by a cougar can be productive. Nonresident hunters can include a cougar tag with others tags for only $14.50. All cougars taken must be checked in within 10 days of harvest; call for an appointment before check in. Remember to pick up a tag for 2016. Coyote numbers are good throughout the district. Try calling in early morning and late afternoon. Remember to ask for permission before hunting on private properties. BAKER COUNTY Cougars can be found throughout Baker County but hunters should target areas with high concentrations of deer and elk. Setting up on a fresh kill or using distress calls can all be productive techniques. Hunters are required to check in the hide of any cougar taken, with skull and proof of sex attached. Remember to pick up a 2016 tag. Coyote numbers are good throughout the district. Try calling in early morning and late afternoon. Remember to ask for permission before hunting on private properties. Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area Hunting Season is now closed. Glass Hill Unit is closed to all entry Feb. 1 through March 31 for the protection of wintering Deer and Elk. Vehicles, camping and fires are prohibited on the wildlife area during all closures. For more information please call 541 963 4954 WALLOWA COUNTY Coyote: Good numbers of coyotes can be found throughout Wallowa County. Calling coyotes with rabbit distress type calls has been effective for hunters. It is important to choose areas with abundant coyote sign and little human activity. Cougar numbers are moderate throughout Wallowa County. Most lions are taken incidental to other hunting; however, calling with fawn bleat, or locating a cougar kill and waiting for a cat to return are often successful techniques. Remember you need 2016 tag to hunt as of Jan. 1.
