Together, we are a family of champions. Since 1948, we have been champions of innovation, design, and of course, motorsport. Yet, there is another group of champions who have always been an inseparable part of the Porsche story—the passionate enthusiasts who champion the brand every day. To you our friends, family, and fans, we extend the most sincere thank you.
Welcome to Rennsport Reunion VI. Thank you for 70 years.

The most fun you can have in L.A. legally speaking. Some look at a road and merely see a means to an end. Then, there are some that view it as an opportunity. A spark plug for the senses. WELCOME TO PORSCHE RENNSPORT REUNION VI! /O
n behalf of Porsche Cars North America and Porsche dealers nationwide, I would like to welcome you to Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. This year is very special to us all because we are celebrating no less than 70 years of Porsche sports cars. In fact, this family reunion is the culmination of our anniversary. Allow me to take you back to the beginning of 2018. We kicked off the festivities in February when “The Porsche Effect” opened at the Petersen Automotive Museum. This exhibit is one of the most impressive Porsche displays ever to be shown outside of Stuttgart. I encourage you to go see it – perhaps even as a stop on your way home from this weekend. June 8 marks an important moment in the calendar for every Porsche enthusiast. On that day, in 1948, the “No. 1” Roadster received its street certification and the Porsche sports car was born. Birthdays call for a party, which is why we joined with our dealer partners to create the first ever Sportscar Together Day. Porsche dealers across the country hosted events that weekend to celebrate the thrill of Porsche sports cars, and we also had
packed houses at our two Experience Centers. The very car that started it all is here at Rennsport Reunion, and as you will see, it looks great as ever. Turning our attention towards the future, you will find that another car here also carries a large significance for our brand. The Concept Study Mission E shows the vision for what a fully electric Porsche might look like. This summer, the vision received a name: Taycan. Next year, the vision becomes reality. Trust me when I say that this addition to our legacy will be a true Porsche, equally stunning to behold and exciting to drive. Until then, I invite you all to enjoy seven decades of Porsche at full throttle and on the limit here at Rennsport Reunion VI. This year’s theme, “Marque of Champions”, speaks for itself when it comes to our cars, but what truly defines Porsche is each and every one of you. Thank you for your passion! With best personal regards,

WELCOME TO MONTEREY

n behalf of the County of Monterey, our residents and businesses, it is a pleasure to welcome you to beautiful Monterey and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. It is an honor to be selected by Porsche Cars North America to entrust Monterey County with this international exhibition of racing and celebration for the third consecutive occasion. Our iconic 2.238-mile road course and facility has evolved since its inception in 1957. From a race track that was built in just three months’ time to host its first sports car race to today’s international racing series who thrive on the challenging course, the world of motorsports continually places WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as one of the world’s top traditional road racing courses. This is a testament to the many men and women who have for years volunteered their time and energy to ensure each event runs safely and smoothly. With our new naming rights sponsor WeatherTech, the County of Monterey, which owns the facility and events, has embarked on a comprehensive facility improvement plan. The County is committed to enhancing the experience for racers, teams, fans, sponsors, renters, campers and everyone who steps foot into this facility. We embrace the past, and are committed to its future.
Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI will present a full sensory experience to Monterey. We want to extend a personal thank you to the Porsche Cars North America steering committee, the race participants who are bringing their exquisite race cars to the track, the hundreds of Porsche Club members who are filling the Porsche corral, to our exhibitors and sponsors that are participating, and to our guests. You keep the passion alive for not only Porsche, but also WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Once again, on behalf of Monterey County, welcome to Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI. Sincerely,

t is with great pride and pleasure on behalf of the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula that we welcome you to Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The world’s greatest gathering of significant Porsche race cars are assembled for you to enjoy, both on and off the track. We are delighted to be working alongside such tremendous partners in Porsche Cars North America and the County of Monterey, which owns Laguna Seca Recreation Area, to present the sixth edition of this world-renowned event, and the third consecutive one to be held in Monterey. Our scenic area is filled with an unbridled passion for the automobile–and wonderful roads like the breathtaking Highway 1 to the twisty road that carves through Carmel Valley–and an undeniable passion for Porsche in particular. Porsche and Laguna Seca’s roots are intertwined since the facility opened. On the track’s maiden weekend, November 9 and 10, 1957, seventeen Porsche sports cars rolled up to the starting line for the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races that was held at the brand new circuit. Little has changed through the years as Porsche race cars continue to populate racing grids, both professionally and at club events. Porsche Rennsport Reunion truly is a Porsche family reunion. While strolling the paddock admiring the race cars and talking
to their enthusiastic owners, don’t be surprised to be rubbing shoulders with legendary drivers. The greatest of the greats from Porsche racing history, along with current factory drivers who are carrying on the winning Porsche tradition, are here. Be sure to also check the daily schedules for autograph and Q&A sessions being held in the Porsche Park in the Paddock, where you can meet the driving legends, enjoy refreshments and be entertained by the fun family activities. You are encouraged to explore the entire facility, from the open race paddock and vibrant marketplace brimming with exhibitors to the top of the famed Corkscrew where you can see for miles in all directions. Porsche Rennsport Reunion and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Enjoy your weekend,

DENNIS SIMON
BRINGING PANACHE TO ART /W
hen Dennis Simon was commissioned to paint the poster for Porsche Rennsport Reunion II, never did he imagine that 14 years later, Porsche would again come calling. Yet, this is precisely the case for the renowned automotive artist who now has created four of the previous five Reunion posters. Earlier works showed off the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning 917 K; the recent Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid and LMP1 WEC Champion; and the 356 SL that won its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 (all on the 2015 poster); the 1981 factory 935 longtail, dubbed Moby Dick, in Martini colors, and Al Holbert’s 911 RSR from 1974 (2011); the incredible 917 and 962 in Gulf and Löwenbräu liveries (2007); and the three 908s crossing the finish line of the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona (2004). Rennsport VI honors the full pantheon of Porsche motorsport champions, and the poster depicts three of the most significant players: the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring-winning Type 718 RS 60, the first overall endurance race winner from Porsche; the 2008 RS Spyder which famously punched above its weight by winning races overall in the American Le Mans Series in the Le Mans Prototype (LMP2) class; and the 959 Group B rally car, which after winning the grueling 6,200 mile Paris-Dakar off-road rally in 1986 went on to become the world’s fastest production street-legal road car. Simon’s interest in cars goes back almost as far as his interest in art. He remembers drawing girls for a short time before he began filling school notebooks with car sketches. His life as an automotive enthusiast has followed the usual route, starting with a ($250) MGA while in art school, and now, 50 or 60 cars later he enjoys his 1953 Morgan. “I was always careful to cultivate tastes I could afford content to consume vast amounts of automotive history and catching rides in the grander marquees.” By the 1970s, he had moved up market to early ‘50s Jaguar XKs—overdoing it in fact, accumulating more classics than he needed—including a nice matched pair of spatted red XK-120 roadsters. Although there had always been a sprinkling of automotive assignments in those early freelance years, it was a casual spin in a fellow enthusiast’s XKSS that helped him decide to concentrate wholly on automotive subjects. Simon began his career as a fashion illustrator and three years
later became an art director at a Baltimore advertising agency. In 1972, he decided to freelance full-time, concentrating on design and illustration for advertising and editorial subjects. Some of his early clients include the Smithsonian Institute, the National Geographic Society, Johns Hopkins University, and the U.S. Departments of Interior, State and Commerce. The majority of Simon’s work in the ‘80s was done for the National Park Service. In 1986 and 1987, Simon designed the exhibit system for the Collier Automotive Museum in Naples, Florida, providing an ideal opportunity for him to combine his skills in exhibit design with his longstanding interest in vintage automobiles. Some of Simon’s favorite projects document automotive racing history, and he has designed over 60 original automotive racing posters for such clients as UNOCAL, Michelin, BF Goodrich, Bahama Vintage Grand Prix, and a series of Monterey Auction posters. Simon designed and illustrated the cover of the Indianapolis 500 program and poster in 1998. He was also commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service to design the 1992 America’s Cup Sailboat Race stamp. Simon’s designs have been praised in the automotive press as “Reminiscent of the great poster designs of the ‘20s and ‘30s. They present clean, powerful images that define the spirit of a ‘vintage’ event.” In all his imagery and design, his goal has been to bring back the missing elements of style, romance and panache that so characterized an earlier part of this automotive age.

WOLFGANG PORSCHE Born in Stuttgart, Germany Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI Co-Grand Marshal Dr. Wolfgang Porsche is the youngest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche and has been on the Supervisory Board of the sports car manufacturer since 1978 – an impressive 40 years. Over the past four decades, Dr. Porsche has had a key influence on all of the company’s major decisions, including the strategic realignment and reorganization of Porsche AG in 1992, expansion of the product portfolio to encompass several new models such as the mid-engine Boxster, the Cayenne SUV, Panamera Sports Sedan and CUV Macan, in addition to the recently introduced all-electric sports car, the Taycan. Last at Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV in 2011, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche is the public face with whom people most identify with the Porsche sports car company. Furthermore, Dr. Porsche is no stranger to North America, as along with trips to previous Rennsport Reunions, he has multiple visits to the Porsche Club of America (PCA) annual “Porsche Parade” with his family as well as at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Wolfgang Porsche was born on May 10, 1943 and spent the first six and a half years of his life on the “Schüttgut” estate in Zell am See, Austria, which belonged to his grandfather Ferdinand Porsche. In 1950, the family returned to Stuttgart. In 1965, he graduated from the Odenwaldschule secondary school. He went on to study at the University of World Trade in Vienna and graduated with a degree in business administration. In 1973, he received his doctorate in commercial sciences. He began his professional career as an independent entrepreneur: As a managing partner of JAMOTO, he became the general importer for Yamaha motorcycles in Austria and Hungary. In 1976, he joined what was then Daimler-Benz AG in Stuttgart, where he worked for five years as a Sales Manager in various areas. In 1978, he was appointed to the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, where he supported his father Ferry Porsche at the sports car company. Following the death of his father Ferry in 1998, he was elected spokesman by the Porsche family. In January 2007, he took over as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG. When Porsche

Automobil Holding SE was founded in June 2007, he was also elected as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of this company. He has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg since April 24, 2008, as well as the Supervisory Board of Audi AG in Ingolstadt since May 10, 2012. Dr. Porsche now divides his time between Salzburg and the “Schüttgut” in Zell am See. He has four children and four grandchildren. There, in the Austrian province of Salzburg, he runs an Alpine organic farm which is also home to around 200 cattle. Since his early youth, he has also demonstrated a passion for his company’s sports cars. Over the years, this passion has given rise to a collection of rare Porsche vehicles that he drives regularly. Wolfgang Porsche regards his main role to be to continue the work of his father Ferry and his grandfather Ferdinand, and to balance and unite the interests of the family members. Dr. Porsche celebrated his 75th birthday on May 10, 2018.

/ MR. BILL WARNER Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI CoGrand Marshal Bill Warner founded The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance near his home of Jacksonville, Florida in 1996. In the twenty-two year history of the show, it has not only become a preeminent Concours d’Elegance in the United States, it has raised well over $2.5 million for Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, among many others. Warner is a retired Major from the United States Air Force, journalist and photographer for national magazines such as Road and Track and Porsche Panorama, and is an accomplished racer, car restorer and collector. Bill has been around automobiles his whole life. As a teenager he worked at the local Volkswagen dealership in the parts department and driving the delivery truck. On weekends, he worked as a “gopher” for the dealership’s racing team and became enthralled with motor racing. Upon earning his degree in Electrical Engineering from the Citadel, he entered the family filter business and started work on the side for Sports Car Graphic Magazine. In 1971, he began his relationship with Road & Track Magazine which continues today. His photographs and writing have appeared in Road & Track, Car and Driver, Autoweek, The Atlantic Monthly, Automobile, Automotor und Sport, Classic & Sportscar, Porsche Panorama, and Forza to mention a few. In 1975, he teamed with Tom Nehl in a Porsche 911 to finish 14th in the third running of the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-ShiningSea Memorial Trophy Dash (AKA The Cannonball Run) and later finished 26th in the inaugural running of the Cannonball One Lap of America.

In August of 2014, Bill was presented the President’s Cup for the Car of Most Historical Significance to Laguna Seca at the 2014 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
On January 21, 2015, Bill was awarded the “Bob Akin Memorial Motorsports Award” from the Road Racing Driver’s Club. The award is presented by the late Bob Akin’s son, Bobby, to the individual who best mirrors the character of his father, including passion for motorsports and automobiles, a high level of sportsmanship and fair play, and who has contributed to the sport of motor racing. He co-authored with Tom Cotter the book, Cuba’s Car Culture, which was released in 2016. He is currently working on his second book, The Other Side of the Fence, 50 years of Motorsport Photography. Bill is recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Florida Service ribbon and served 30 years in the Florida Air National Guard, retiring at the rank of Major. here is a ringleader behind any major event. A cheerleader. A raconteur. And since the formation of Porsche Rennsport Reunion in 2001, one man still stands tall – racing legend Brian Redman – who continues to serve as ambassador for Porsche Rennsport. While Porsche Rennsport was first held at Lime Rock Park in 2001, it was originally born in Monterey at Laguna Seca. “The idea came from two events that were held in 1998: The Monterey Historics where Porsche was featured marque, and the 50/50 event I and our son James, Race Director, organized at Watkins Glen. My longtime friend, the late Bob Carlson who was Porsche’s PR chief, and I observed such passion for Porsche, and thought a reunion of important Porsche race cars should be held. Thus, Porsche Rennsport Reunion.” The rest is history as Porsche Rennsport Reunion enters into its sixth highly successful edition. If there was a race car in the ’60s and ‘70s, it’s a fair bet that Redman has driven it. Ford GT40, BMW 3.5 CSL, Ferrari 312PB, Alfa Romeo Tipo 33, Jaguar Group 44, Lola T600, Aston Martin AMR1, Chevron, three single-seat Lola F5000 championships, Cooper, McLaren M19, Shadow and so many more. But Porsche is where Redman’s affection lies. In 1969 Porsche had the opportunity to win the coveted International Championship of Makes for the first time. Led by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche’s dynamic grandson, Ferdinand
24 |
Piëch, Porsche produced the 908LH (long-tail) and 908K (short) and at the same time built and developed the allconquering 917. Redman and his co-driver, the late, great, Jo Siffert, won five races to clinch the Championship for Porsche. He went on to race 917/10, 917/30, 934, 935, 936 and 962’s. “There is no other automobile company in the world that uses racing to develop their technology for road cars in the way that Porsche does,” Redman says. His expertise, constant smile and good humored approach to Rennsport is contagious, and he will be seen throughout the paddock during the weekend. You’ll see him chatting with guests and drivers, signing his award-winning book ”Brian Redman: Daring Drivers, Deadly Tracks” and most assuredly talking to mechanics about achieving that slight edge from the engine bay. Porsche Rennsport Reunion is a fitting tribute to Porsche owners and drivers that will undoubtedly bring a neverending grin across Redman’s face. And for the legendary driver and Porsche brand ambassador, that’s what family reunions are all about.

orsche is synonymous with passion, power, technological dominance, victories and legends. When you think of Porsche, not only do the models spring to life like 908, 910, 917/30 and 911, but so too do the drivers who piloted them to race wins in the world’s most grueling competitions. Many of these legendary drivers, team owners, engineers and others who brought racing successes are here at Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI. Not because they have to…but because they want to. These are some of the biggest names in motorsport who have come together for this Porsche family reunion. They are here to share stories with enthusiasts, sign autographs, visit with drivers and owners, and generally soak in the ambiance that can only be instilled by one marque–Porsche.

aking a prominent position to complement Porsche Park in the Paddock is the Chopard Heritage Display that showcases Porsche’s vision and defining moments in time. While these invitation-only cars are not on the racing grid, they are significant examples of Porsche racing history to share with motorsport and motoring enthusiasts. Each vehicle in the collection was chosen for its contribution to Porsche’s racing successes, road car engineering and performance superiority. Inside the enormous Chopard Heritage Display, visitors will have the chance to explore and relive history, talk with many of the caretakers of these cars and meet with Chopard representatives who will be showcasing their timepieces. From the sleek 1951 356 Gmund Coupe that was driven around the Montlhery banking for 72 hours at 94.66 mph to a new world record, through the decades to the more modern era 2009 997 RS “Art Car” that competed in the American Le Mans Series in 2009 and 2010 before its last race at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans where it finished 6th in class and 18th overall, the full phalanx of cars and machines provide insight into why, and how, Porsche has dominated the motorsports world for years.

WHO IS BOB? /B
ob Carlson had a significant influence as both a journalist and public relations professional in the automotive and motorsports worlds, particularly within Porsche and at the Atlanta headquarters. He was also a friend, mentor, and valued colleague to everyone he touched, both in and out of his work environment. Bob Carlson passed away in December of 2008, after a year-long battle with cancer. For just shy of a quarter century, Bob worked for Porsche Cars North America. He started working for the company when it was headquartered in Reno, Nev., as the racing public relations coordinator, and was stationed in Warrington, Pa., with Al Holbert, the first president of Porsche Motorsport North America. He was quickly promoted to Racing PR Manager, and helped lead Porsche through a golden era in motorsports, including the major success of the Porsche 962 – which many still
38 |
consider Porsche’s most successful race car. Bob personally guided road racing stars such as Al Holbert, Derek Bell, Bob Wollek, Rob Dyson, Hurley Haywood, Chip Robinson and others through this period, maximizing exposure for Porsche while cementing lifetime relationships with both drivers and journalists, as well as everyone else in the racing community. Bob also showed his patience and professionalism during the same period as the public relations representative for Porsche’s brief CART champ car effort. He remained in Pennsylvania working with Holbert until Al died in a private plane crash in 1988. Bob, along with his wife Debbie then moved to Porsche Cars North America corporate headquarters in Reno, becoming Manager, Media Relations and Racing in 1991, and subsequently Manager, Public Relations (1992). Another promotion in 1993 earned him the title of General Manager, Public Relations. Bob did some of his best product and corporate public relations work during the early and mid-‘90s as Porsche had discontinued the high-volume Porsche 944, and was yet to introduce the Boxster (1997). Porsche sales numbers were down, yet journalists treated Porsche fairly because of the respect Bob had earned for being honest and responsive. With the introduction of the Boxster, Porsche’s return to Le Mans, and the resurgence of sports car racing in the United States
2018 PORSCHE RENNSPORT REUNION VI

with the American Le Mans Series, Bob had expanded areas of responsibility, and his hard work paid off. Porsche doubled its sales with the Boxster introduction and soon after with an all-new 911 Carrera line, and Bob was ready for the challenge. His innovative product introduction programs and personal relationships helped spread the word about the new Porsche models. Subsequent introductions of the Cayenne and Cayman have elevated Porsche to its current success level, and Bob was an integral part of helping North America retain its position as the company’s largest market, only most recently lost. While overseeing Porsche product PR, Bob dreamed up some very entertaining and unique ways to showcase Porsche sports car and SUV performance. In 2000 he unveiled an all-new 911 Turbo by challenging media to set personal-best top-speed records on a vast dry lake bed in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. He replicated Porsche’s famous winter testing regimen when he invited journalists to drive the Cayenne in and around the city of Whitehorse, deep in the Yukon Territories. Bob also did the unimaginable: letting journalists pilot the mighty Cayenne Turbo up the famous 12.4-mile mostly unpaved Pikes Peak International Hill Climb road course, letting drivers “hang it out” on 156 dirt turns with no guardrails and often thousand-foot drop-offs as they clawed their way to the 14,115-foot peak. But Bob’s first love had always been racing, and the announcement that the Porsche factory was teaming with Penske Racing to build an LMP2 prototype vaulted him back into the spotlight of Porsche Motorsport. Bob’s extensive relationships within the industry made the transition from Porsche 911-only racing to prototype racing seamless. Even after he was diagnosed with gall bladder cancer in 2007 and was forced to miss the activity at the race track, he guided the internal and agency PR staff through the complicated political path of international media and racing. Bob’s keen interest in motorsports history, which was only second to his personal interests in both U.S. Civil War history and the history of railroading in North America, led to an idea
“ B OB DREAMED UP ENTERTAINING AND UNIQUE WAYS TO SHOWCASE PORSCHE”
of gathering historic Porsche race cars and drivers from around the world at a Rennsport (racing) Reunion in the United States. Naysayers dismissed the idea as “of little interest” or “a waste of money,” but Porsche Cars North America president Fred Schwab gave the okay, and Bob and retired racer and vintage racing organizer Brian Redman set forth to contact collectors, drivers, and the Porsche museum in Germany to solicit participants and race cars to join him at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut in July 2001. No one – except for Bob – could have anticipated the interest as more than 15,000 enthusiasts came to the event, along with Roger Penske, Paul Newman, and countless other Porsche Motorsport icons – plus more than 300 highly historic vintage Porsche race cars. Ask a Porsche Club of America member what was the most important event they ever missed they will surely respond, “Porsche Rennsport Reunion I at Lime Rock.” Of course, the success of this event inspired Porsche to order Bob to start planning another Rennsport for 2004, and Bob realized that Lime Rock was not big enough to hold the event he had launched. His personal relationship with NASCAR owner Jim France led to a partnership with the Daytona International Speedway for Rennsport II in April 2004. More than 600 Porsche race cars, and celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld and hundreds of race drivers and collectors, participated with the sweet sound of Porsche race engines revving on the high banking in one race after another. Rennsport III – also at Daytona – was held in November 2007, with Bob taking a break from radiation treatment to run the show along with Brian, and it was another overwhelming success, with Porsche 917s, 962s, 956s, 904s, 908s, and hundreds of 356 and 911 race cars performing on the track where Porsche won its first 24-hour endurance race in 1968. In early 2008, Bob was awarded the Jim Chapman award for lifetime achievement in motorsports public relations from the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association. Bob was born in San Jose, Calif., and graduated from Del Mar High School in San Jose in 1966. He then went to San Jose State University, where he received a B.S. in Business Administration in 1971, and went back to San Jose State for an M.S. in Mass Communications (1985). Prior to his career in public relations, Bob was a newspaper man, writing a motorsports column and covering racing for the San Jose Mercury News, and before that for the Palo Alto Peninsula Times Tribune. Even Bob’s closest friends and associates might not know that he also worked for a short time (in 1984) in the PR department for Lockheed Missiles & Space Company, working with astronauts on the promotion of the Solar Array Flight Experiment for the space program.

orsche Rennsport Reunion takes place every few years and is to date, the largest international exhibition of Porsche race cars. It’s a meeting of the best of the best, where not only famous cars that won on the world’s racing stage are on view, but also where the racing legends of that time reappear. Porsche is unarguably the only brand that can join such racing and road going pedigrees with the racing stars of yesterday, today and future, along with tens of thousands of loyal fans in one celebratory location. It all began in 2011 on the track at Lime Rock Park, born from the creativity and persistence of Bob Carlson, public relations executive of Porsche Cars North America, who was earlier captivated by the enthusiastic support Porsche received when the marque was honored at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. Racing legends Brian Redman, Derek Bell, Hurley Haywood and Roger Penske gathered on the track to celebrate their cars and numerous wins again to the delight of many fans. Porsche decided to go all in, and bring exquisite machines from their Porsche Museum in Europe to the U.S. for the occasion. Featured cars ranged from the 550 Spyder to the 911 GT1, the 1988 Le Mans

winner. In all, more than 100 Porsche race cars gathered for the first overseas rendezvous. Three years later, in 2004, the second Reunion was hosted at Daytona International Speedway. There was significantly more space there than had been available at the more intimate environs of Lime Rock. The highlights were five racing categories and a Concours d’Elegance. Vast sums of energy and resources brought together 620 combined Porsche treasures at one time, all together in the same place where Porsche has known so many major racing successes. Daytona was chosen again in 2007 as the scene for the third Rennsport Reunion. Again, there were fascinating racing machines to stimulate the senses, especially the eyes and ears. More than 600 racing cars lined the course and once again visitors poured in to see them. During the three-day program the show featured competitions on the track, including the Concours, which was

an invitation-only event for participants. Particular focus was given this time to the 917 series of racing cars and to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of the victorious long-distance 956 and 962. In 2011 the meeting place changed again as the fourth Rennsport Reunion was held at the peak and valley Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a mecca of Porsche racing history. None other than Porsche driver Brian Redman served as the official ambassador of the event for Porsche Cars North America. It was fitting that Rennsport was held on the west coast because at the time of the Reunion every fourth Porsche sold in the United States was sold in California. The show was another knockout with hundreds of cars lining up and waiting for a chance to be the center of attention to delight the audience at the “Nordschleife of America.” Dr. Wolfgang Porsche was on hand for the celebration, driving a 550 Spyder. Jurgen Barth was also there, behind the wheel of the 718 W-RS. A total of 420 race cars entertained more
48 |
than 25,000 Porsche fans who flocked to Monterey. Feedback on Monterey was so positive that Porsche Cars North America announced Rennsport would return to the iconic circuit in 2015 for Porsche Rennsport Reunion V. The secret was clearly out, as more than 60,000 Porsche fans and more than 1,400 Porsche Club member-owned cars descended on Monterey. The three days were filled with exciting racing, Concours on Pit Lane, new model debuts, family activities, and of course celebrities and legendary drivers. Co-Grand Marshals Jacky Ickx and Hurley Haywood led an all-star cast of 50-plus legends attending in honor of “Porsche at Le Mans” where they spent hours signing autographs and meeting fans. The new Chopard Heritage Display celebrated Le Mans with more than 75 significant cars that were invited from individuals and major automotive collections. More than 320 race cars filled the grids each day, with special exhibition laps scheduled in between, such as the powerful LMP1 919 Hybrid 24 Hours of Le Mans winner that had also just clinched the World Endurance Championship the prior weekend. Porsche Rennsport Reunion. It is a gathering unlike any other in the world, and surely the sixth edition is one that will be talked about for generations to come.

SHORT CAR, LONG CAREER In late 1969, a decision was made to build a very special car for just two events, but instead it carried on for a massive thirteen seasons. The 908/03 thus became the longest-serving pure prototype racecar in Porsche’s rich history

hen at the end of 1969 Porsche’s head of R&D and motorsport, Ferdinand Piëch, defined the need for the compact 908/03 he certainly didn’t have a 13-year career in mind for probably the nimblest car Porsche was about to build since the Typ 909 hillclimb car. In fact, as far as Piëch was concerned, the 908/03 didn’t even have to be used a full season, for he wanted it to do just two very specific events: the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring 1000kms. The rest of the World Championship of Makes (WCM) season Porsche’s interests would be looked after by a flotilla of more powerful workssupported 917s, a car so powerful, yet too much of a handful, it was deemed unfit for the Italian and German classic events, where less power, but especially less weight was always going to be more of a factor. What was needed was a car as light and nimble as could be, with short overhangs and a perfectly balanced weight distribution. That car had already been created on paper in the summer of 1969, and carried the code number 908/69. It was supposed to have been the 1969 development model of the 908/02, but as the original 908/02 was still winning races with ease and since Porsche’s motorsports policy had changed drastically over summer in order to reduce costs, the project had been shelved. For the 1970 season, however, with all the factory’s remaining 908/02s sold to customers, the need for its successor suddenly was relevant once again.

SICILY 1970: first-ever race and first world championship win at the Targa Florio for the Porsche 908/03 driven by Jo Siffert and Brian Redman. Notice the straightforward aerodynamics and compactness of the car.
A LIGHTWEIGHT Piëch had the new car based on the successful Typ 909, two litre Bergspyder, which had all the ingredients he knew where needed to be successful at these two events. All that was required was the 908’s three litre engine, and one would have the ideal car to challenge the big five litre sportscars, like, incidentally, the Porsche 917. Piëch managed to convince his uncle, Ferry Porsche, to put the 908/69 paper exercise into practice, thus giving birth to the Typ 908/03. In a way it was strange that this car carried the 908 Typ-number, since apart from the engine and the wheelbase dimensions, it had little in common with its predecessors, the Typ 908 and Typ 908/02. The Typ 908/03 had an all-new aluminium space frame chassis, with the driver’s seat moved as far forward as possible without the driver actually sitting on the front axle. As with the Typ 909, his feet were placed ahead of the front axle line, thus allowing for more room for the 380 hp, flat eight engine. The suspension components were
also new, while the gearbox was placed between the engine and the differential. Liberal use of magnesium and titanium kept the curb weight at just 545 kilograms, which, given the engine produced some 100bhp less than competition, still made it a very competitive proposition at specific circuits. The body of the 908/03 was completely new, with a blunt nose with no headlights as the rules allowed for daytime races, and a top surface almost as flat as a table top in order to reduce drag and increase downforce. Weighing just twelve kilograms, the foam-reinforced plastic body was nearly see-through when not painted. There was no rear overhang, the body ending at almost the exact outer edge of the rear tyres, which where mounted on 13in rims all round, 9.5” wide at the front and 14.5” at the rear. Two development cars were built, and after finalizing the shape and forms, seven new cars were built to attack just the two races, the Targa and the ‘Ring. It was almost as if Piëch wasn’t aware of the cost-saving policy his uncle had recently put in place.
TARGA FLORIO The Porsche 908/03 made its debut on May 3rd, 1970 in Sicily. Four cars were entered for the Targa Florio: three for John Wyer’s JWAE Gulf team and one for Louise Piëch’s Porsche Salzburg team, with a fifth chassis present as a spare. The four race cars wore striking liveries and were individually identified

by playing-card symbols on the nose section, an idea of Porsche’s new design guru Anatole “Tony” Lapine who thus proved to know his motorsport history since the Austra-Daimlers entered in the 1922 Targa Florio – and designed by Ferdinand Porsche – had been similarly decorated. The driver line-ups showed that, as always, Porsche meant business in Italy. Jo Siffert/ Brian Redman (car №12, chassis 908/03 008, diamonds), Björn Waldegård/Richard Attwood (car №36, chassis 908/03 011, spades) and Leo Kinnunen/ Pedro Rodriguez (car №40, chassis 908/03 009, clubs) were entered for JWAE, while Vic Elford/ Hans Herrmann (car №20, chassis 908/03 007, hearts) were entered by Salzburg. Porsche’s main opposition, as usual, came from Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, the former with the big five litre 512S, the latter with the three litre T33/2. Some 400,000 spectators lined the 72 kilometre Picolo Madonie circuit, causing the race to be started late by over an hour. When it finally did get underway, on wet roads, Elford uncharacteristically spun off the road on the first lap after clipping a kerb and breaking the front suspension. In the lead after the first lap was Gérard Larrousse in a Martini Team 908/02 he shared with Rudi Lins. At half distance though, it was the Ferrari of Nino Vaccarella and Ignazio Giunti leading from the Team AAW 908/02 of Gijs Van Lennep and Hans Laine. In the second half of the race, Laine lost a wheel and the Ferrari drivers suffered what Elford had predicted from his test run in the 917 K: fatigue. The 908/03s moved to the front with Redman leading till the finish, closely followed by Kinnunen, the latter setting the all-time lap record of the Targa Florio at 33:36 while taking second overall from the Ferrari on the last lap. Laine still finished in fourth with the third remaining 908/03 finishing in fifth. One down, one more to go.
NÜRBURGRING Four weeks later the little bombshells from Stuttgart reappeared for their second and last race of the year at the notorious Nürburgring Nordschleife. In those four weeks, the 908/03s had received bigger rear wheels, the fronts also increasing in width to 11” to improve the turn-in. During qualifying, Siffert had set pole in a record 7:43, some twelve seconds faster than the year before with the 908/02. Rodriguez was the only other driver to set a time below the 7:45 mark, the two Salzburg 908/03s qualifying five and fourteen seconds slower in third and fourth. Interestingly, the JWAE cars ran on Firestones, while the Salzburg cars were on Goodyears, though they still carried Firestone branding, which might help explain the differences in the times between the cars.

GERMANY 1970: Four weeks later at the Nürburgring, chassis 008 scores another world championship win, this time in the hands of Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens, and entered by the Porsche Salzburg team.
The fastest Alfa Romeo, driven by Rolf Stommelen, was some seventeen seconds off the pace, the first Ferrari 512S of Giunti had to give in eighteen seconds. With four 908/03s taking the top four places of the starting grid, Porsche had proved its point, as had Piëch. The four 908/03s looked unbeatable, the two JWAE cars ahead of the two Salzburg cars, all four of them easily pulling away from the rest of the field. But then Kinnunen crashed on his first lap after having taken over from Rodriguez, while Redman’s engine started to die by mid-distance. From then on, the race was a walk in the park for the Salzburg entries – which had bigger oil tanks – with Elford/Ahrens winning by five minutes from Attwood/ Herrmann. The factory Ferrari 512S Spyder of John Surtees and Vaccarella finished in third, a full 22.8-kilometre lap behind. The Porsche 908/03’s 1970 scoring card showed 100% success, and one can’t but help to think that Ferdinand Piëch was a very happy man. While the 917s cleaned up the remaining races of the season, the 908/03s were mothballed and put away until next season’s Targa Florio.
BIS REPETITA One year on, the 908/03s reappeared in Sicily, now with 15”x17” rear wheels and 917-style vertical fins on the engine cover to increase stability at high speeds. Brake discs were cross-drilled, not only to save unsprung weight but also to increase their effectiveness and reduce brake pad wear. The 1971 version weighed in at 565kgs, twenty more than a year earlier, courtesy

of a larger fire extinguisher and a full-width roll-over bar over the cockpit as per the latest CSI regulations on safety. Despite all the improvements it was apparent in qualifying that the Porsches would not have things their own way as they had done a year before. The three factory-entered Alfa Romeos T33/3s were quickest, the fastest 908/03 in qualifying over one minute behind the fastest Alfa. In the race things went even worse with both JWAE Gulf entries, driven by Rodriguez and Redman, crashing on the first lap. The Martini car lasted a little longer until a puncture damaged the suspension and forced the team to retire. At the Nürburgring the new Ferrari 312PB of Jacky Ickx was quickest in qualifying, with the Targa-winning Alfa Romeo T33/3 of Rolf Stommelen lining up alongside the Ferrari. The four 908/03s qualified neatly grouped together, in third through sixth; the two Martini entries heading the two JWAE Gulf cars. In the race the Siffert/Bell car retired after just seven laps when the chassis broke, the Swiss driver transferring to the team’s other car, something which infuriated Jackie Oliver and made him decide to leave the team after Le Mans. At the front, the Alfa Romeo retired with a blown engine after fourteen laps, while the Ferrari
retired seven laps later with a cracked cylinder head. Whereas Lady Fortune had worked firmly against the Porsches in Sicily, she was certainly smiling at them in their home race, the three remaining 908/03s finishing in first, second and third, with only the Andrea de Adamich/Henri Pescarolo Alfa Romeo on the same lap in fourth. The rest of the quality field had been lapped at least twice. The 1971 Nürburgring 1000kms marked the end of the works-career of the Porsche 908/03, with three wins from four races; all three victories achieved with chassis 908/03 number 008. But it wouldn’t be the end for the 908/03 with the privateer teams. That chapter was just beginning.
ENTER THE PRIVATEERS At the end of the very successful – but very expensive – 1971 sportscar season, Ferry Porsche decided to stop all works motorsport activities. Thus 1972 became the first international sportscar season without any factory involvement from Porsche. In the absence of the factory team, Porsche’s honour was to be defended by privateers and thus, in April 1972, the factory 908/03s were sold off to privateer teams, who were all too eager to get their hands on one of these small marvels. Among the new 908/03-owners were Reinhold Joest, who bought the 1970 Targa Florio winning chassis 908/03 008 which he would use until 1983, and Juan Fernandez, who had his car run by the Swiss Porsche Club Romand team, as well as the Spanish Escuderia Montjuich team (chassis 908/03 013). In 1974, West-German real estate
Spaniards Juan Fernandez and Paco Torredemer drove this chocolate-sponsored 908/03 to fifth overall in Le Mans 1973.

tycoon Dr. Hermann Dannesberger bought a car from Porsche’s museum collection. Dannesberger’s chassis, 908/03 006, had been the one of the company’s test hacks and had been scheduled to be verschrottet, crushed, at the end of the 1971 season. But instead it was loaned to the Deutsches Museum in Munich, from where Porsche then retrieved it to update it and sell it to Dannesberger. Dannesberger later ran it in the 1975 World Manufacturers Championship and the European Interserie Coupe in the same official Martini Racing team colours the factory team had run in 1972 through 1974. At first the results were what could be expected of a now underpowered and overweight car. Reinhold Joest and Gerhard Schüler still claimed a second place at the Monza 1000kms, but four laps down on the winning Ferrari 312PB despite the race being a wet affair which cancelled out most of the advantages of the newer Ferrari. In 1973, the Escuderia Montjuich entry for Juan Fernandez, Bernard Chenevière and Paco Torredemer finished an unexpected but certainly merited fifth overall in Le Mans, while Joest won the Kyalami 9 Hours non-championship race. In 1974, Joest bought a second car (chassis 908/03 012) and competed in nearly all the rounds of the World Manufacturers Championship. But the lack of power made itself felt now more than before and he and regular partner Mario Casoni usually finished in the second half of the top ten, while most races were won by the unbeatable Matra-Simca MS670Cs. A fourth place overall at the Paul Ricard 750kms would be the highlight of the

German team’s season. For the 1975 season, Porsche – again not having a factory programme that year – agreed to sell some selected 908/03 owners the Typ 911/78, 2142cc, turbocharged engine from the previous year’s Carrera RSR Turbo which had finished in second place at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Three cars were thus equipped over that winter, despite the hefty 83,500 Deutsch Mark price tag and the factory warning them that the original 908/03 transaxle might have difficulty coping with the extra power. The trio included Joest’s chassis 908/03 008, his second car kept the normally aspirated engine, Dannesberger’s ex-museum piece and that of Spanish Porsche importer, Ben Heiderich. The rear frame of these 908/03s was reinforced at the factory, while brakes, driveshafts and part of the suspensions came from the spares bin of the 917. Equipped with the engine cover and rear wing of the 917/10 to produce enough aerodynamic grip, the Typ 908/03 Turbo made its debut in Mugello under the watchful eye of Norbert Singer. Driving one of the Martini Racing 908’s,
For the 1975 season, selected 908/03-owners were sold the 2.1-litre F6 turbo engine from the previous year’s works 911 Carrera RSR. The car was given a 917/10 engine deck for much needed downforce and a rather inelegant looking airbox.

Porsche built the 936 as a works entry for the 1976 World Sportscar Championship, but it was Joest and his 908/03 who won the first round at the Nürburgring. Note the 917/30 bodywork and headlights from a NSU road car!

Van Lennep and Müller finished in third behind the winning, equally turbocharged Alpine-Renault A441 of former Porsche driver, Gérard Larrousse, and Jean-Pierre Jabouille, and the Willi Kauhsen-entered WKRT Alfa Romeo T33TT12 of Arturo Merzario and Jacky Ickx. At the cars’ second outing in Dijon, the Joest-entered example finished in second overall as it would at the next round in Monza. Another podium finish at the EnnaPergusa 1000kms by the Joest team was followed by a third place at the Nürburgring by the Martini entry of Müller and Kinnunen. For the Le Mans 24 Hours Joest equipped his car again with the normally aspirated Typ 908 engine, the 908/03 this time being equipped with the longer engine cover of the CanAm Typ 917/30. Another podium finish at the Österreichring and a fourth place were enough for Porsche to finish runner-up behind the near unbeatable Alfa Romeo’s in the 1975 World Manufacturers Championship. Since the Joest team scored the bulk of Porsche’s points, the team was given a special award by the manufacturer.
For 1976, there were two World Championships, one for Manufacturers (WMC) and one for Sports Cars (WSCC). The manufacturers’ championship was open to road car-based Group 4 and Group 5 cars like the Porsche 935, while the sportscar championship was open to Group 6 prototype cars. The Porsche factory team produced the 936, but it was not for sale so the company’s usual clients stuck to their 908/03 Turbos. In fact, it was thanks to a 908/03 Turbo that Porsche claimed its very first Group 6 win, when Reinhold Joest won the Nürburgring 300kms after Rolf Stommelen’s factory 936 had a problem. By now Joest’s 908/03 Turbo was equipped with the full bodywork of the Can Am 917/30, painted in bright yellow and equipped with headlights borrowed from an NSU 1000 TTS. The big airbox was gone, since the CSI’s rules stipulated that a sportscar could not be higher than 92 centimetres, thus fresh air for the air-to-air intercooler was fed through an airbox located on the left of the driver’s head, inside the roll hoop. It wasn’t the most elegant looking car, but it was the winner of yet another world championship event. Joest’s 908/03 Turbo would continue to be the 936’s unofficial wingman, usually with Joest and Ernst Kraus sharing the duties.
In 1977, Joest was less lucky. Driving with Claude Haldi and Brett Lunger, he entered only two rounds of the WSCC, both times retiring with engine failures. He was luckier 2018 PORSCHE RENNSPORT REUNION VI

Left: Joest upgraded his 908/03 continuously and by the end of the season it was hard to tell the difference between his car and a 936. At the Nürburgring Joest won from pole position. Right: Eleven years after its debut, the 908/03 made its last world championship appearance at the 1981 Nürburgring 1000kms. Jürgen Barth and Volkert Merl finished the shortened race in sixth.

the following year when the five-round European Sportscar Championship replaced the WSCC. Joest finished in second overall at the opening race at the Nürburgring behind the Osella of Giorgio Francia and then went on to win at Monza, Vallelunga and the Salzburgring to claim the title. But the success story of the 908/03 Turbo was not over yet. By 1979, the WSCC long gone and forgotten, FISA allowed Group 6 cars to compete in the WMC, albeit without the possibility to score points. That, however, was enough for Joest to dust off the 908/03 Turbo, put a twin-turbo Typ 935/73 engine from the 936/78 in it, add a 936-inspired Design Plastic bodywork and go racing again. At the first opportunity, the Dijon 6 Hours, Joest, Volkert Merl and Mario Ketterer struck hard and beat the hitherto untouchable 935 brigade by four laps. At the Brands Hatch 6 Hours, Joest and Merl would repeat the feat, this time beating the Le Mans winning Kremer team and their superior 935 K3. The same teams and cars would finish in the same positions one year on at the 1980 Nürburgring 1000kms, when Jürgen Barth and Rolf Stommelen in the 908/03 Turbo beat John Fitzpatrick, Dick Barbour and Axel Plankenhorn in their 935 K3/80. The 908/03 Turbo’s long World Championship career would dramatically come to an end at the 1981 Nürburgring 1000kms

when both Joest and Sigi Brunn entered similar cars. Brunn had bought the ex-Fernandez 908/03 and upgraded it with the same twin turbo engine Joest ran, calling his car a 908/03-81. Brunn had finished in third at the Silverstone 6 Hours together with Irish driver (and future F1 team owner) Eddie Jordan. At the next round in West-Germany, Brunn entered the car for himself and Herbert Müller. But a freak accident cost the life of Müller and ended the race prematurely, at the same time ending the 908’s international success story. Barth and Merl still salvaged sixth place, but the real international farewell for the Typ 908/03, came at the Kyalami 9 Hours where Barth, Brunn and Jean-Michel Martin finished in second overall. This was probably the best the trio could have hoped for since the winners were none other than Reinhold Joest and Jochen Mass in Joest’s 936, while the man’s 935J – driven by Derek Bell, Gianpiero Moretti and Mauricio de Narvaez – finished in third.

DOMESTIC FINALE With the advent of Group C in international sportscar racing for 1982, the German DRM championship offered a safe haven for now obsolete Group 6 cars. Gentleman-driver Volkert Merl had liked his runs in the Joest 908/03 the previous season and asked him to prepare the car for him for the DRM and the Interserie championships. In the DRM, the Joest team was led by Bob Wollek in the 936, with Merl in the 908/03 and business man Dieter Schornstein in the 935J. Given the opposition in the DRM – not only Wollek but also Stommelen in a Kremer-built replica 936 plus Klaus Ludwig’s works Ford C100 – Merl’s two third and two fourth places were more than merited. At the Siegerland airfield race in September, counting towards the Interserie championship, Merl copied his team boss by winning the race when the engine of Wollek’s 936 let go, just like Joest had done at the Nürburgring in 1976, with the very same car, when Stommelen’s 936 gave up the ghost. Joest’s 908/03 was the last one running anywhere in the world, and just when the man from Absteinach thought about retiring the car to his museum it was needed again in a hurry. For the third round of the 1983 DRM at the Berlin AVUS street course – made up mainly of two long and fast sections of motorway and the two spoon-shaped corners connecting them – only ten cars had made it to the former German capital. Ten was the minimum for the race to count towards the championship, so any mishaps in practice or qualifying would turn the race into a point-less
58 |
The unexpected encore: wearing Reinhold Joest’s helmet, Jürgen Barth was a very last minute entry into the 1983 AVUS DRM race.
affair. But in the final qualifying session, Klaus Ludwig had blown the engine of his Ford and the team had to put in an all-nighter to get things fixed. It was not only a matter of getting Ludwig in the race, but also of having enough cars starting the race, so it would count. Fortunately there was an eleventh car sitting in the paddock: Joest’s venerable Porsche 908/03 Turbo, chassis 008. To be on the safe side Joest asked Jürgen Barth to get in the 908/03 and start the race from the back, without even having done a single lap in practice, qualifying or even in the race morning warm-up. In fact, Barth had never even raced at the revised AVUS before! He had, of course, successfully driven the car in the past, so it didn’t take that much to convince the stewards of the late entry. It was either that or maybe no race at all. Since Barth was in Berlin in his capacity of Porsche’s Head of Customer Sport, he hadn’t brought his overalls nor helmet and thus had to wear Joest’s old suit and head gear. The 908/03’s very last race unfortunately ended with a DNF after just four laps when the transmission broke, thirteen years after the type’s first race.

activities at PMNA, the center also attends to legendary vintage and historic competition cars, which are constantly being rotated in and out for everything from minor services to full mechanical rebuilds. PMNA recently received a commission from the REVS Institute in Florida to rebuild the engine and transmission of one of the most important 917s ever built, the prototype Can-Am 917, chassis 917-028. The car made its U.S. debut in August 1969 and was driven by the great Jo Siffert, and it also has the
distinction of being the only 917 to have competed in the CanAm series from 1969 through 1973. The assembly of the mechanical components of a 917 requires patience and experience. Fortunately, PMNA has the talents of Alwin Springer and Dieter Inzenhoffer available for such projects, and the job was scheduled. A suggestion was made that the rebuild be documented and the work space be arranged so the public would to be able to watch the assembly process. In addition to assisting in the rebuild, PMNA

technicians Eric Bloss and Derek Denzel also set up the benches and stands that allowed the work to be viewed and photographed. All of the parts were laid out in a surgical style reminiscent of photographs of the original assembly decades ago in the race shops in Zuffenhausen. Handwritten notes in German from a well-worn notebook were consulted often as the components took on recognizable shapes. The big air-cooled 4.5-liter flat-twelve engine appeared to hold court as fascinated enthusiasts followed the methodical assembly. The transmission was a spectacle of

its own, the beautifully machined magnesium housing and table full of gears, bearings, forks, and gaskets awaiting their turn in the forming of a complete unit. With Inzenhoffer handling the transmission and Springer managing the engine, onlookers were treated to a pair of veteran professionals doing what they know and do so well. Upon completion, the engine was given a test run on the PMNA dyno before being crated along with the transmission and returned to Florida to be reunited with 917-028.

ey Patrick, are you busy ? We have a 917/10 turbo that we just finished doing the engine and gearbox and as soon as it is done on the dyno, it’s going back in the car. Can you get to Chuckwalla Raceway on Wednesday at sunrise ? Good, see you there…..
That’s how it all went down. After overseeing and turning a few wrenches himself during the rebuild at PMNA of 917/10 chassis 007, the ever-present Alwin Springer called the former kid he has known for so long and offered him the opportunity to shakedown one of the stuff that legends are made of. A 917/10 turbo from the days when the Can Am shook the grounds of the circuits of North America.
Patrick Long: I’ll admit I am jaded.... having driven a majority of Porsche factory race cars through the years, there are only a few I have lived to wonder of I will ever get a proper skid in. The debut of the Porsche 917/10 Turbo in the 1972 CanAm Challenge Cup Series rewrote the description of what “unlimited” had previously meant. Everything that anyone in North American motorsport thought they knew about unlimited Can-Am racing suddenly got knocked into a cocked hat. The overachieving air-cooled endurance motor that had carried Swiss hero Jo Siffert to fourth place in the ‘71 championship was transformed into a flame emitting, thousand-horsepower beast by the addition of turbocharging. Under Porsche’s Hans Metzger, Helmut Flegl, Valentin Schaffer and the American racer/engineer Mark

The red, white and blue of the number 59 was to become a cornerstone of Porsche success in North America right: Chris Lester and Eric Bloss making adjustments as Patrick Long remains focused on his next series of laps
Donohue, the car that enveloped this flat-12 monster pulverized the pavement by shoving a massive wing and scalloped nose through the air, creating ridiculous amounts downforce to press down on its massive Goodyear race rubber. Unlimited became shock and awe.
Patrick Long: The Brumos 917/10 is one that’s sort of a trifecta for me. 917 Turbo, and Can Am, the colors and stripes with the number 59. Peter Gregg was a participant in the 1972 Porsche blitz of the Can Am aboard his 917/10 but never fully came to terms with the learning curve that car required and decided to concentrate on what he knew best: GT cars. Finding a ready and willing buyer only took a phone call to Hurley Haywood who realized what the opportunity meant in progressing to a full time career in professional motorsports.
74 |
Patrick Long: I have been to Chuckwalla numerous times for testing and promotional filming. This somehow felt different, pulling into the paddock and seeing the crew going about the business of preparing the car. All those past images of the Can Am were coming to life. 1973 proved to be a banner year for Hurley Haywood with overall victories at the Daytona and Sebring endurance races, or the 36 Hours of Florida as double winners often recall. Haywood’s recollection of the 917/10 being his “first real racing car” underscores the respect the turbopanzer demanded. He was a quick learner and surprised many that season by standing on the podium several times and finishing third in the championship, ahead of many more well known and experienced names.

Patrick Long: As I started to lean on 007 I thought back to Hurley’s book where he talked about showing up to Mosport after making the jump from a 911 to the bear of the Can Am and the 917. He was wide of Mark Donohue’s pace and he knew why: Downforce! This car makes proper downforce and the tire size means that the grip threshold is a long way down the trail. The car demands massive commitment to drive it to its edge. The overall condition of 917/10-007 was remarkably good, as if the car had been put away after the Can Am series ended, and brought out for those special occasions such as Rennsport or a Brumos function. Running the car in anger was a very different
matter and owner Dan Davis shipped 007 off to PMNA for a mechanical going through under the supervision of Alwin Springer whose experience with the big flat twelve goes back to their debut. Much of the heavy lifting was done by longtime PMNA stalwarts Eric Bloss and Derek Denzel with the beefy four speed gearbox redone by the experienced Dieter Inzenhoffer. There were no half measures. The shakedown at Chuckwalla was handled in a period correct manner as if the crew had been transported back to 1973.

Alwin Springer: Asking Patrick Long to do the test of the 917/10 was an easy decision for one reason, he is a complete professional in his approach. He has stayed in this business because he knows what is important, he listens and observes. We spent over an hour going over every aspect before the engine was started. The debriefs after every session were as relevant as he would do in his GT3 R. As he became more comfortable with the car he would offer his own input and suggestions – that is how it is with a professional.

The heat in the desert can be unforgiving. You plan and start early and get the job done and leave. In theory that is how it should be, in practice it’s not always the same reality. The shakedown of 917/10-007 went with the former – everything went off as a prepared car could be. No mishaps, off road excursions or mechanical maladies. Time for an early lunch…. and Mr. Luftgekuhlt’s final thoughts of experiencing the past?
Patrick Long: My ankles and knees were bruised up from the many chassis tubes running throughout the footwell; no wonder they had many foot injuries in the day.

ICE HILL ACCELERATION STRAIGHT The Acceleration Straight provides a safe and controlled environment to fully explore how a Porsche accelerates using launch control for an added bonus. Near the end of the nearly 3/4 mile straight, is a replica of the Karussell (Carousel), the famous banked curve on the Nordschleife (North Loop) of the Nürburgring.
The Ice Hill simulates an icy mountain road where a driver is likely to lose control up or down the hill. Ice Hill has a 7 percent slope, computer-controlled water jets and a low friction surface. This combination provides a unique and challenging scenario to test even the most experienced of drivers.

LOW FRICTION HANDLING COURSE
LOW FRICTION CIRCLE The Low Friction Circle consists of a 300-foot diameter highly polished concrete on a wet surface that creates an ideal environment to provoke, correct and hold oversteer at all speeds.
OFF-ROAD The Off Road course is designed to demonstrate the technical systems of the Porsche Cayenne and Macan in off-road conditions. With 45 percent declines and ascents, rough terrain and unfeasible side slopes that challenge even the most impressive 4x4s, the Cayenne and Macan are more than capable of conquering the toughest obstacles. After ascending to the top of a 25-foot hill, drivers are rewarded with a spectacular vantage point of the entire facility.
The Low Friction Handling course consists of a dry polished concrete surface with many curves to provide a situation where a vehicle can be placed in an oversteer condition. The polished concrete, demonstrates a low traction but dry surface condition.
DRIVING SIMULATOR LAB The Driving Simulator Lab brings to life the visual thrill of driving on the world’s leading race tracks, right down to replicating unique characteristics of the circuit. It uses highlyresponsive actuators and algorithms to create realistic driving experiences, whether it’s on the race track or open roads. Moreover, Porsche Exclusive provides customers the opportunity to build their own Porsche to their specifications and personal tastes. And when their car is ready, customers are taking advantage of the exclusive New Vehicle Delivery program that comes with on-track instruction and lunch in the contemporary and award-winning Restaurant 917 to complete the experience, but only the beginning of joining the Porsche family journey.

PORSCHE MOTORSPORT NORTH AMERICA RACES AHEAD Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) now also calls the PEC LA campus home. PMNA is the only authorized sales, parts and service provider for all Porsche race cars such as the 911 GT3 Cup, 911 GT3 R and Cayman GT4 Clubsport in the United States and Canada. The group is also the only official engine and gearbox servicing operation outside of Porsche Germany. Additionally PMNA provides onsite race support at multiple international racing series as well as support for historic motorsport activities including full restoration and tuning services. There is a natural synergy created by having many Porsche entities under one roof. Visitors at the PEC LA can view restorations of important historic Porsche race cars, as well as

world class engine and gearbox building as it happens through the glass windows in the main gallery. Approximately 120 engines and gearboxes are rebuilt by PMNA each year, complete with Dynamometer testing to ensure exact performance levels and reliability standards have been met. Porsche technicians also support many historic race cars, from engine servicing and gearbox rebuilding to complete restorations. In addition to working on cars, PMNA is actively engaged in selling race cars, averaging 100 sold per year. This is comprised mainly among the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Pirelli World Challenge, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy Series in both the United States and Canada. Not surprisingly, Porsche is the world’s largest manufacturer of race cars. The Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles is a destination unto itself and offers guests a chance to fully be immersed into the Porsche experience. DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Porsche 956s and 962s cleaned up all the great championships and classic endurance events around the world for years. But for many years these cars were also the weapon of choice in smaller sprint series. Even in 2017, a 962C could still be found winning races in Germany Words: Serge Vanbockryck Photography: Porsche Historical Archives

t was, of course, a no-brainer that the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft or DRM – the erstwhile happy hunting ground of the Porsches 935s run by famous team owners like Georg Loos, Max Moritz, the Kremer brothers and Reinhold Joest – would welcome the Porsche 956 to its one-driver, no-pitstop sprint championship as soon as the car was made available to its customers. Thus in March 1983, the first customer 956s made their debut at the former Belgian Grand Prix track in Zolder, Belgium, driven Bob Wollek (956 104), John Fitzpatrick (956 102), Clemens Schickentanz (956 105) and Jürgen Lässig (956 109), the last two running their cars in Le Mans aero-spec as delivered. For Fitzpatrick and Lässig this race was about preparing the coming WEC season, about to start in Monza, while the two Joest-run 956s were in for the championship. Wollek won the race as had been expected, thus scoring the very first victory for a privateer 956, while Lässig crashed out, thus marking the first off for a privateer 956. Wollek and Joest duly cleaned up the championship with four wins from five starts. The following two seasons – won by Stefan Bellof and Hans-Joachim Stuck in 956s – the once famous DRM died a slow death, victim of undersubscribed races and promoters interested in other disciplines. But the series would rise from its ashes as the ADAC Supercup in 1986.
PARTY FAVORS The Supercup had been created at the behest of the ADAC by the renowned marketeers of IMG. IMG had hired the services of former Porsche works driver Jochen Neerpasch, who had coined quite a simple formula for success: less events + more prize money + more TV coverage = more top teams, drivers and sponsors. Neerpasch was right and the works Porsche team was one of the first to sign up for the new, five-race, one-million-dollar championship, making it the first time the factory entered a national championship. A sinister looking all-black, Blaupunkt-sponsored Porsche 962C ( 962-005 ) equipped with the new PDK transmission, was entered for Stuck, who would be up against the teams of Joest, Kremer, Brun and Lloyd who usually entered all the cars they had,
Above: Hans-Joachim Stuck won the 1986 Supercup driving this works 962C. Left: In 1988, the German Supercup was the factory team’s only full-season racing program. Here Klaus Ludwig stands in front of Stuck in the Diepholz pitlane.
driven by the best drivers available, like Klaus Ludwig, Bob Wollek, James Weaver, Danny Ongais or Oscar Larrauri. Sponsorship for the various teams was provided by household names like Blaupunkt, Jägermeister, Kenwood or Tic-Tac; all persuaded by Neerpasch’s concept. After four races – one event had been cancelled – Stuck won the drivers’ championship but Joest Racing beat the factory in the teams’ standings. The following season the Supercup grew in strength with the arrival of more top Porsche 962Cs, so Stuck and the works team knew they would have their work cut out. Courtesy of a special lightweight 962C (962 009) with an all-carbonfibre bodywork and an improved version of the PDK, Stuck beat Bob Wollek to the title; their respective teams finishing in the same order. In 1988, the works Sauber-Mercedes team entered the Supercup with a two-car assault for what would become the ultimate intra-Stuttgart battle between the dark blue Mercs and the yellow-and-red Shell/Dunlop 962C of Stuck, who sometimes received help from Klaus Ludwig. The ADAC Supercup was Porsche’s final full-season works programme, but despite the best efforts of all involved Mercedes took home the titles. 1989 would be the final year of the Supercup and in the absence of the works teams, Joest Racing, Bob Wollek and their overdeveloped 962C (courtesy of Norbert Singer doing some “after-hours” work) took home the championship. Porsche 962Cs filled the entire podium more often than not, but with the series cancelled for 1990 and the WSPC being dominated by Sauber-Mercedes and Jaguar, those running 962Cs would soon have to look elsewhere.
INTERSERIAL WINNER In the summer of 1983 the mighty 956 also made its debut in the Interserie championship. The Interserie was a European FIA championship very similar to the CanAm championship, and catering for the same type of cars (genuine sports cars and converted single-seaters of various origin). After the initial success of the early-1970s – courtesy of a gaggle of professionally run 917/10s – the championship had been reduced to a mere shadow of itself by the early 1980s. To keep travel and other costs down for the mostly German-speaking gentleman-drivers now running cars of quite a few years of age, the championship had forgone visiting legendary tracks like Monza or the Norisring and instead had found solace on WestGerman airfields, in the Austrian Alps and behind the Iron Curtain. It was there, on the Czechoslovakian track of Most, that Walter Brun debuted his newly acquired 956 111. While he had to let go the win in the first heat to Walter Lechner and his converted March F1 car, the second heat was Brun’s. But, too busy building a sportscar racing empire, it would be Brun’s only Interserie outing that year. Wollek scored a second Interserie-win for the 956 at the season’s finale, when Joest had entered both his cars as an engine-test for the end-of-season Kyalami race. Porsche 956s had only shown up at two events – and won both – but the regular Interserie contenders knew what would be coming their way eventually. 2018 PORSCHE RENNSPORT REUNION VI

From 1986 onwards, and despite the arrival of the big-money Supercup, the Interserie championship grew in stature mainly because of half a dozen or more 956s and 962Cs entered and run by some of the world’s leading sportscar teams, and successfully driven by pros. When the plug was pulled on the Supercup at the end of 1989, the Interserie provided a safe haven for those teams with local paying drivers or local sponsors. Up to a dozen Porsche 962Cs were regularly entered by Porsche’s stalwart sportscar teams, with Bernd Schneider taking home the title and the coveted Porsche Cup for himself and his team, Porsche Kremer Racing. Despite serious opposition from the Joest team, Porsche Kremer Racing – while also being one of the last teams to run 962Cs in the world championship and in Le Mans – went on to win the titles again in 1991 (Schneider again), in 1992 (Manuel Reuter) and in 1993 (Giovanni Lavaggi). Such was the level of competition in the Interserie in the early 1990s that the winners of the Porsche Cup – awarded to the best privateer drivers and teams worldwide – were also Interserie regulars; John Winter winning his second such cup in 1991 and Oscar Larrauri taking home his first in 1992, while Joest Racing won the teams’ cup both these years. Specifically for the Interserie championship, the Kremers had developed the venerable 962C into a potent spyder by 1992, a car which ultimately would go on to win the 1995 Daytona 24 Hours.
GO WEST: LAST-EVER CAN AM VICTORY A few weeks before Walter Brun had set the Most grandstands in Czechoslovakia alight with his new Porsche 956 in 1983, John Fitzpatrick had done the same at Road America, though the crowd had been slightly smaller than the 100,000 carmad Czechs. The Can Am organizing Sports Car Club of America had been lobbying hard to get some of the privateer 956s to their events especially since it had become clear that rivals IMSA wouldn’t allow the 956 in their Camel GT Championship. Despite their best efforts, the SCCA owed it mainly to John Fitzpatrick Racing’s American sponsor, J David, that the Briton sent over one of his cars, 956 110. Fitz cleverly used the event to try some new engine ideas which might come in handy later in the European races. The SCCA had of course hoped to attract more 956s or other Group C cars to revive the Can Am championship. After the mid-1970s dip, the series had just lived its second high when from 1979 till 1982 Formula 1 and IndyCar regulars ruled the roost in cars fielded by household names like Paul Newman, Rick Galles or Count Van der Straten. Those days were now gone, but Group C cars like the 956 could bring back the glory. Fitz duly showcased the potential if the 956 by beating Jacques Villeneuve’s Frissbee-Chevrolet by a full second to pole position, with Jim Crawford lining up his ex-F1 ShadowCosworth in third almost three seconds behind. In the race, Fitz beat Villeneuve by over 11 seconds, thus scoring the Porsche 956’s first ever win on American soil.
88 |
Right: Bob Wollek won the 1983 German Rennsport Championship driving the Warsteiner-sponsored Joest 956.
Two months later Fitzpatrick gave the 956 a second Can Am start at Mosport Park, but on the Canadian power track the Chevy-powered purpose-built Can Am machines were too strong for the nimble Porsche. Fitz qualified in fifth – some six seconds behind pole sitter Michael Roe – and finished in third, two laps down on winner Crawford. The car was then immediately shipped back to the UK where it would achieve the ultimate glory by beating the works cars at a washed-out Brands Hatch the following weekend. But before that, it had scored Porsche’s last-ever Can Am win. The championship folded a few years later.
STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 35 YEARS With the end of the Group C and IMSA GTP regulations in the early 1990s, most teams bought next-generation sportscars from other manufacturers to continue to compete at the highest level, though some gentleman-drivers continued to run their 962s in local series – where homologation dates were rather flexible – as long as they could, though nobody had ever thought seeing a 962C still race for overall honours against modern-day machinery as late as 2017! Though that is exactly what happened when German businessman and gentleman-driver, Klaus Abbelen, had bought Porsche 962 172, the Dauer-run, Havoline-sponsored machine the Andretti family had raced in the 1991 Daytona 24 Hours. The car had raced just the one race before it was mothballed at Dauer’s in Germany. Three years later its monocoque was used to build one of the road-going Dauer 962 GT Le Mans, but its mechanicals were kept by Dauer and sold a decade later. In 2008, using a spare monocoque from the Schuppan road car project but the original mechanicals, the black Andretti 962C was rebuilt in the UK and sold to Abbelen, a veteran of many Nürburgring 24 Hours. Abbelen initially raced 962 172 in historic meetings, but soon found his way to the German “Spezial Tourenwagen Trophy,” a championship which allows in all kinds of new and old GTs and sportscars. Against drives half his age and racing the latest in GT3 machinery Porsche, Audi or Mercedes have on offer, Abbelen scored two fine wins at the Nürburgring in 2016 and another one in 2017, the very last race and victory on record for a 962. Abbelen could have scored another victory at the Ring in 2017, but – even though he qualified on pole position – he elected not to start the race since he had… to attend a wedding. A racing gentleman indeed.
