Celebrating Singapore’s 50th Birthday as One People As the nation gather in celebration, we celebrate not just the arrival at an important milestone, but also the fruits of our forefathers’ labour, the vision and leadership of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and the work of our leaders. Happy birthday Singapore! May the next 50 years take us to new heights and success as a nation! – Kevin Kwee, Executive Director
This very special occasion in my view and the biggest tribute should go to the people who made Singapore what it is today - our pioneer generation! Many of whom were migrants from Asia, my grandparents or your great grandparents. All came with a hope for better lives yet unknown of the uncertainties ahead, but they are sure that their sacrifices and determination would overcome any challenges to attain success.
Singapore is a shining beacon in the global demonstrating what can be achieved when people and its leaders put their mind to it. I love homeland and wish Singapore and its people great years. Congratulations. – Patrick Bowers, CEO & MD, Laguna Hospitality
Unselfishly, they continued to persist, persevere and work hard for greater harvest to serve their future generations, for many grandchildren or great grandchildren like you and me.
community, a country’s my adopted another 50
Against all odds, Singapore has made it today to its Golden Jubilee in triumph and victory. I am proud of Singapore for where it is today and happy to call this my home. May Singapore continue to progress and achieve success! Happy SG50! – Bradley Leahey, General Manager The impact and significance of our astounding growth as a nation of people of different colours and cultures cannot be understated. To use golf as an analogy, the ball never knows the shade of a player’s skin. And all that matters is that it goes into the hole in par or less. My wish for our country is to build upon this harmony of races, and hope that the social graces of our people continue to develop so that our children will enjoy an even better life than we have. – Tan Ju Kuang, Golf Digest International (Asia) / Swing (SPH golf supplement)
If I was ever granted a wish, turn back the age-clock for our pioneer generation that they are in their 40s but living in our current conditions and let them enjoy what they have built over these years! - Jeffery Leong, General Manager, Exklusiv Management
What a transformation! This little red dot’s rise to prominence has been as remarkable as it is uplifting – truly one of the world’s great success stories. After 13 memorable years here, we are proud to call Singapore home. May the next halfcentury witness this Asian tiger roar ever more loudly! – Spencer Robinson, Sports writer and Commentator I wish that people remember Mr Lee Kuan Yew for generations to come and progress economically and socially as he no doubt would have. – Mike Kasem, DJ, Class 95
Happy Birthday Singapore! If we had such an awesome first 50 years...our next 50 is going to be more awesome! We are 50 years YOUNG and we ain’t slowing down for nobody. Everyone has been warned...Don’t stand in it’s way...The Singapore Train is on a roll and it’s gonna Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga Choo Choo all the way for another million years!! – Andre Hoeden, DJ, ONE FM 91.3 I hope Singapore will continue to prosper and be a stronger, peaceful and harmonious nation to live in. GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE Dear Members, With the celebration of SG50 in the second half of the year, Laguna National Golf & Country Club would like to take this opportunity to wish Singapore a happy 50th anniversary. It is a time to congratulate Singapore’s innovative and pioneering spirit as well as the rich and diverse cultures that make Singapore our home. We would also like to thank our Members for your patronage and support of The Nest. We have received feedback from Members, which we have taken onboard and hope to continue raising the bar in providing great hospitality at The Nest. It was especially gladdening to see some of our social Members back in the Club again to enjoy the new facility after some time. I am pleased to announce that as of June, Members will now have access to Singapore Swimming Club’s gymnasium. This is a new benefit for our Members and if you require further information, please contact our Membership Department for details. The Asian Golf Monthly voting season has just ended and we would like to thank all Members for your votes and participation in this activity. The Masters Course clinched three awards last year, which were a great encouragement to the team and a testament to the upgraded experience as a result of the redesign, new grass and stringent maintenance routine. To-date, we have completed renovation on nine of the holes on the Masters Course and the remaining nine holes are progressively being upgraded at this moment. So as not to disrupt play, the management is committed to maintaining 18 playable holes at all times during the renovation, which is targeted to be fully completed via the middle of 2016. Upon completion of the Masters Course renovation, we will be
making some changes to the World Classic to enhance play due to some parts of the land being acquired by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The management has spent the past few months reviewing the holes that have been affected and devising a new layout, which will provide a better play experience (more enjoyment and challenges) for golfers. At the same time, the golf course maintenance building will be relocated to Hole 3 of the World Classic, which is still within our Club premise and allows for efficient maintenance of the golf course. The LTA has started preparing the ground for construction of the MRT station and a 6-lane road along Laguna Golf Green. As you drive into the Club, you will notice hoarding along the side of the road. At this stage, the route and entry into the Club will not be affected. In time, LTA will advise and put up signage accordingly when the current road will be taken over for works and cars will be shifted to a temporary road on the currently hoarded side of the road. As for the Clubhouse, we will shift into our temporary golf facility in this quarter and the west wing will be closed for renovation to make way for the demolishing of this older facility, which will be renovated to become the new hotel, and golf and country club. The new temporary facility will provide more convenience for Members with the front desk, pro shop, golfers change rooms, Members’ lounge, golf office and buggy staging area located within the same vicinity. On behalf the management, I wish to thank all Members for your understanding and patience as we progress with the renovation and bring Laguna National Golf & Country Club forward for the future. Yours faithfully,
Bradley Leahey General Manager bradley.leahey@lagunanational.com

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Since the LTA’s announcement of its plans to upgrade the transport infrastructure around the Club’s premises in August last year, Laguna National has been working closely with the authorities to re-plan and revamp our development. At this stage, we are pleased to share the latest updates with you. Contributed by Patrick Bowers
The sleek new redesign of DusitThani Laguna Singapore as viewed from the finishing hole

Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore Resort Hotel As many of our Members noticed and commented on occasion, it may have seemed like the main construction has slowed down after the initial demolition of the West Wing of the clubhouse. As we shared with you previously, the reason for this was the extensive consultations and redesign work we needed to embark upon once the official announcement in August 2014 of the road widening and extension (Laguna Golf Green) and the Thompson East Coast Line extension (two MRT stations adjacent to Laguna National’s boundaries and 2 major underground tunnels under Laguna National’s property). As of 1 June, the piling contractor has moved back on site to start additional work. The hotel redesign enhanced the eight private villas overlooking the golf course and also revised the main building from four to six stories in an effort to afford greater views over the beautiful golf courses as well as avoid the main construction zones for the MRT (which will primarily take over the previous Laguna driving range space). It is now our expectation that we will vacate the remaining portion of the clubhouse (the East Wing) in approximately August/September 2015 so that it may be demolished, and the new hotel and Members’ Clubhouse construction may start. Stay tuned for further communication on our plans for the temporary Golf Reception and Locker
Rooms as well as buggy staging and departure areas for the two golf courses. Laguna Golf Green Diversion Those of you who enjoy the Club regularly will have undoubtedly noticed the safety hoarding, which now extends fully along the length of Laguna Golf Green. Indeed, the LTA’s appointed contractor has moved in. For those of you who may not be aware, as part of the LTA’s master plan announced in August 2014, Laguna Golf Green will be widened into a 6-lane road with divider (three lanes in each direction) and will ultimately connect Xilin Avenue on the east end with Upper East Coast Road on the west end. This will be a very convenient new connection with our many active Members who call Marine Parade, Bedok and Tampines their home. We have been working closely with the LTA on the diversion and we have been assured that Members will have the same access to the club that they have always had, simply on a diverted route during the construction period. It is expected that the diverted Laguna Golf Green will follow a temporarily constructed road which is to be erected on decking over top of the existing Sungei Ketapang before making a left turn into the Club premises. The projected opening date for the new road is projected to be sometime in 2020 according to the LTA.

Practice and Teaching Facilities (Driving Range) We are very pleased to now be in a position to share with you that after extensive discussions and cooperation with the LTA and SLA, our Members will have a wonderful practice and teaching facility to continue working on their games during the construction occupation of the existing driving range site. While the construction of the Thompson East Coast line will necessitate the LTA contractors taking over the site of the existing driving range until approximately 2024, a temporary site located just west of the Bedok Camp – Elite Singapore Guards site has been secured and planning is nearly complete to award the tender and construction for the new temporary practice facilities.

Killing off the old native grasses on fairway 6 to make way for the new platinum paspalum to be planted
now allow the Golf Course Construction and Maintenance Team to renovate and upgrade the entire hole at once where we will reshape the tees, fairways, bunkers and green surrounds. Two (2) new bunkers have been strategically placed on the right hand side of the fairway landing area at the same time enhancing the bunkers that are placed surrounding the green and also enhancing the green apron playing surface like the construction team has carried out to the previous holes as listed above. Also we had our construction team work on improving the walk on and off the green from the buggy parking area. Over at Hole 6, the beginning of the fairway will be closed to make way for the temporary green. Tee boxes will be re-levelled and re-grassed. Hole 6, which is now a par 5, will be played as a short par 4 during this renovation period. The par 4 will be played at 302 yards from the black tee, 285 yards from the blue tee, 276 yards from the white tee and 257 yards from the red tee.
Hole 12 renovation and upgrading has nearly been completed for grow in
We are pleased to inform you that as of 10 June 2015, nine (9) holes have been upgraded and we are left with nine (9) holes to the completion of the golf course renovation at the Masters Course. Looking at Hole 10, grass is already growing in on the second half of the fairway with the new larger enhanced bunkers created on the left of the fairway landing area. As for the green surrounds, we have reshaped the apron to improve the water run-off and enhance the playability of the apron and green surrounds. This provides more options to Members and their guest on the ways they can play certain shots onto the green. For example bump and run, chip or even putt from the approach onto the green with these new type of playing surfaces like we have also introduced at holes 3, 4, 8, 9, 14, 17 and 18 of the Masters Course. The whole of Hole 12 has been closed for renovation since this is a short Par 4. This will
Once Hole 10 is opened in the first week of July, we will close the first half of Hole 15, which will become a par 3. The distances for this par 3 will be at 150 yards from the black tee, 135 yards from the blue tee, 120 yards from the white tee and 110 yards from the red tee box. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we forge ahead with the renovation of the golf courses. We hope to bring you an enjoyable and memorable experience every time on the course.

of actual textiles, materials (wood/ metal), and finishing. In this way, the project team is able to see and experience the actual hotel room. Once satisfied with how the room will look, it is then sealed off until time comes for contractors to refer to it during the actual furnishing of the hotel rooms. We hope this has cleared some doubts and we welcome you to speak with our staff should there be further queries.

A STEADY, STRAIGHT-HITTER AT GOLF Many of our Members likely participated in the remembrance of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew in their own special ways. In one of the many tributes which followed in his passing, The Straits Times shared this incredible insight into Mr. Lee’s normally very private personal life. We felt that our Members would enjoy tremendously hearing about Mr. Lee’s passion for golf, which was perhaps heretofore relatively unknown. Reprinted with the permission of The Straits Times.

The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew did his calculations before executing his shots. The Malaysian politician was referring to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s golf after having played a few rounds with Singapore’s founding father In the seventies. It was good exercise for Mr Lee, who has also kept himself fit with jogging and swimming at the Istana and during his official trips to countries around the world. The game also gave him a good platform for serious business and good banter with many politicians and dignitaries in a relaxed setting. As is often said about golf revealing a person’s traits and behaviour, the game also gave glimpses of who, and what, the giant of man Mr Lee was. On playing golf with Mr Lee, Tun Dr Ismail had said: “One of the reasons why I am so fond of golf is that it reveals much of a player’s character. “Lee Kuan Yew, when he plays golf, is very deliberate and calculates every move he wants to make.
“He takes his own time, so much so that he keeps not only those playing with him waiting longer than usual, but he also frustrates those who are following behind: a fact which he is unaware of, or if he is, he just ignores it. “Often, because he is too calculating and deliberate, his ball either goes too short or goes past the hole.” In fact, Mr Lee, who played cricket and tennis while studying at Raffles Institution, and had reportedly achieved two holes-in-one, had encouraged both his sons, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, to take up golf. And as Hsien Yang said in his eulogy at the University Cultural Centre on March 29: “Golf was Papa’s principal recreation and passion, so golf featured prominently not only on vacations, but also after work in the evenings. “The nine-hole course in the Istana grounds provided ample room for us children to find adventure whilst he golfed. Club | 21
with Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and, of course, they also talked politics during the rounds. “Sometimes he would ask for tips, and he would execute the swings with relative ease. “I remember when he played with the Commonwealth Heads of State in the early Seventies at Bukit. He played 80 and 76 off a 12-handicap.” Juraimi’s eyes welled when he revealed that Mr Lee arranged for a Sikh English teacher from the Adult Education Board to help him improve his spoken English. “Both Loong and I were sent for golf lessons. We learnt to hit a long drive from the tee box, but neither of us really took to the game and we stopped when we grew up. “But eventually, Papa too, prompted by Ling (daughter Wei Ling who is a doctor), gave up golf, and for exercise he took to jogging, swimming, stationary cycling as well as walking. “He had read of the benefits of aerobic exercise, examined and accepted the evidence, and he had changed his old habits.”. MR LEE AS A GOLFER So how was the late Mr Lee’s golf? “He was a good golfer,” says Juraimi Ratim, who caddied for Mr Lee in the Sixties and early Seventies at Singapore Island Country Club’s (SICC) Bukit course.
PM Samy, 62, who started golf as a caddie when only 10 at the former nine-hole Seletar Golf Club in the Sixties, and caddied for Mr Lee in a social game at the club in 1972, said: “He hit the ball straight, often avoided trouble and had a strong mental game.” Told 10 days prior to the game that he would be Mr Lee’s caddie by the Seletar officials, Samy was excited, and spent sleepless nights wondering about the do’s and dont’s in golf. “It was an experience of a lifetime for me, caddying for the biggest personality in Singapore.
Juraimi, 69, who was the club caddie, then apprentice pro and later full pro at SICC, added: “He had a certain aura about him when he walked the course. I used to admire the way he studied the course.
“He was a fine down-to-earth Prime Minister who made me feel welcome. He spoke little during the nine-hole round, only asking me about distances but deciding on the choice of clubs himself.
“He paid attention to details, and his guesses of distances were almost always accurate.
“He also read the putting lines well, seldom asking about breaks.
“No doubt, he sought confirmation, and would leave it to me to choose his clubs. The four-iron was his favourite, and once he came close to holing Bukit’s par-three second hole, playing off 158 metres with that club.
“Then a 12-handicapper, he played a five-over round of 39, using the old Kenneth Smith madetomeasure golf clubs.
“I caddied for him a few times when he played 22 | Club
“Mr Singh taught me for three years and I paid no fees,” added Juraimi, who attended Mr Lee’s wake after waiting three hours in the queue on the Thursday of the week of mourning and then braved the rain to watch the cortege leave for the NUS Cultural Centre that Sunday morning.
“And I was given a handsome $5, my biggest caddie fee during that time.More than that, what I took back was the measure of simply-attired

not have the best of swings, but he was good because he was very consistent in hitting the ball.”
For Malaysian professional golfer Vellasamy Nellan, 65, who caddied for Mr Lee in 1962 and 1963 at Kuala Lumpur’s Golf Club in Circular Road (later to become Royal Selangor Golf Club): “Mr Lee had a presence about him when he walked down the fairways.”
For former top Australian professional Alan Murray and now director of golf at Champions Golf Academy, who made his base in Singapore in the early Seventies, the late Mr Lee “was a fantastic personality”.
The former Malaysian World Cup player (1976 and 1977) added: “I was overcome by grief when I heard that Mr Lee had passed on. Immediately memories of my time as a caddie for him at the golf course came flooding back. “He used to play with former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak and Dr Goh Keng Swee and I was impressed by his steady golf game despite him not having the best swing. “I was about 12 then and the caddie fee then was 65 cents. He used to give me $1.50 which was good money then for a pre-teen. “But what jolted me most was when he advised me to ‘go back to school’ when he heard that there were days when I caddied in the mornings and afternoons.” CONSISTENT Pro Alvin Liau, 68, who played a few times with Mr Lee, with British journalist, political writer and commentator Alex Josey and then-SICC pro Cyril Horne making the quartet, said that “Mr Lee did
Said Murray, 74, who ran a golf academy at the Singapore Island Country Club and was also a former president of the Professional Golfers’ Association of Singapore, his social game with Mr Lee at the New Course in 1977 was “a day to remember for at least two reasons”. He said: “I was overwhelmed by his approach and attitude to the game. He took the game seriously. He took his time, did calculations before every shot and executed down-the-middle-of-thefairway drives. “In fact, I hit a couple of wayward shots. And the first time I drove into the bushes, I discovered something. “When we started I was surprised that I could not see any of his security men following him. Only when I hit into the bushes and went to look for my ball that I discovered they were around, behind the trees.” Murray quipped: “That’s efficiency. Now I know why Singapore is a safe and secure place”. Club | 23
The Day China’s Zhang Slayed Giant Els In the seventh instalment of Laguna Lifestyle’s ‘Top 10 Moments at Laguna National Golf and Country Club, golf writer and broadcaster Spencer Robinson recalls the week in which Zhang Lian-wei stunned the golfing world by edging out Ernie Els to win the 2003 Caltex Singapore Masters. In so doing, he wrote his name into golf’s history books as the first mainland Chinese to triumph on the European Tour. Contributed by Spencer Robinson
Throughout a tumultuous and pioneering golfing career, Zhang Lian-wei won almost two dozen professional golf tournaments. There is one success, though, that stands head and shoulders above all others. It was 12 years ago that Zhang, a former javelin thrower and a self-made golfer, arrived at Laguna National Golf and Country Club to contest the third edition of the Caltex Singapore Masters. The number one golfer in the world’s most populous country he may have been, but Zhang was not touted among the favourites for the late January event that attracted a high-quality field. Swede Fredrik Jacobson and defending champion Arjun Atwal of India were among those expected to challenge although the smart money was being placed on South African Ernie Els, still on a high following his triumph in the 131st Open Championship at Muirfield six months earlier. It was no great surprise, therefore, when Els duly soared to the top of the leaderboard after three rounds. With a 54-hole aggregate of 10-under 206 he held a two-shot lead from Zhang with Thai Prayad Marksaeng and Scotsman Simon Yates a further stroke in arrears in joint third. 24 | Club
Given his status as the then world number two, the pundits lined up to predict a Sunday stroll for Els, who was bidding for a fourth consecutive stroke play victory after the Nedbank Golf Challenge at the end of 2002 and the first two events of 2003 on the US PGA Tour, the Mercedes Championships and Sony Open. Yet Els sounded some guys really try and play the shot lead I really play,” he said.
a cautionary note. “There are close to me so I’ve just got to way I have been. With a twohave got to knuckle down and
Zhang, for one, was not prepared to throw in the towel. “I am pleased with where I am in the tournament. I played with Ernie Els some years ago, but he is a better player now and he will be very difficult to beat. But I will try my best,” vowed Zhang, whose reputation as a slayer of giants preceded him. Indeed, few golfers relished the cut and thrust of a head-to-head match play-style showdown quite as much as Zhang, as evidenced by his record in the Alfred Dunhill Cup team match play tournament at St Andrews where Colin Montgomerie and Nick Price were among his prize scalps. In the final round at Laguna National, Zhang

was at his most dogged, drawing level with his illustrious rival by the turn. The duo were still locked together on 10-under as they headed to the tee at the treacherous 202-yard 17th. There, it was Els who regained the initiative after Zhang pulled his tee shot left of the green and made bogey-four. Now one ahead and seemingly poised for another victory, it was the South African who erred on the 18th when he pushed his tee shot, the ball bouncing off a cart path and a tree before coming to rest in the rough. From there, Els’s sand wedge approach came up short of the green before he pitched to five feet in three. Across the other side of the fairway, Zhang’s bold drive flirted with the water hazard before his majestic nine-iron approach shot from 136 yards out came to rest just four feet from the hole. Els putted first, and to gasps of disbelief from the galleries, saw his putt spin round the hole and stay above ground. Zhang knew then if he holed for birdie he would win, and the Chinese golfer made no mistake. “I am delighted as I have played so many times on the European Tour. I am so happy,” said Zhang, whose previous best European Tour display was fifth in the 2000 Malaysian Open. “Ernie is a great golfer and it was a pleasure to play with him,” said Zhang. “We had a great day and I just kept trying my best. To be honest, it
wasn’t until the 18th green that I thought I had a chance to win.” For his part, Els admitted that fatigue played a part in his late wobble. He said: “I have to say that the heat eventually got to me a little bit. I felt a little tired towards the end and it was tough. But I take my hat off to Zhang. He stuck in well and didn’t make any mistakes.” While Zhang was celebrating, his young compatriot Liang Wen-chong received the unwanted distinction of being the first player to be disqualified from a European Tour event for using a non-conforming driver. On January 1 in 2003, the European Tour and the Asian Tour had issued a new condition of competition which limited the COR (co-efficient of restitution) on driving clubs (less than 15 degrees loft) to .830. A weekly list of nonconforming clubs was posted on tournament noticeboards but Liang did not check and found, at the end of his second round, that his Mizuno 300 SII was on the list. But that disappointment was long forgotten by the time Liang returned to Laguna National in 2007 and emulated Zhang by winning the Singapore Masters. No wonder Laguna National Golf and Country Club will always hold a special place in the heart of Zhang, Liang and China golf.

Playing Mindful Golf for Improved Focus and Performance Sports Psychologist Dr Jay-Lee Nair explains the concept of being mindful at golf and provides five practical tips on how to improve performance and the enjoyment of your game. Contributed by Dr Jay-Lee Nair
Review your habits on the golf course during a typical game. • Do you check your email or intermittently answer messages on your phone? • Do you continue your conversation mid-way through your shot preparation, or worse; when your playing partner is teeing off? • Do you often play “there-abouts” golf, guessing which club to take from your golf cart to your ball and hitting the shot when you know it isn’t the correctchoice? • Are you known to take conference calls during your round? If these scenarios sound familiar, then you could be in a perpetual state of multi-tasking that is negatively impacting your focus, performance, and enjoyment on the golf course. In today’s information rich society, we have greater opportunity and temptation to engage in two or more tasks at once. There is an illusion that this approach makes us more productive and powerful. In contrast, multi-tasking reduces efficiency and focus contributing to poor decision-making, more mistakes, and higher levels of stress. Performing multiple tasks in rapid succession requires an individual to reorient to each new task, which itself takes time and other attention related resources. We don’t notice the effect on our 26 | Club
performance with mindless tasks such as checking our phones while eating lunch, but when it comes to skills demanding intricate synchronisation of the mind and body a heightened sense of awareness is crucial for performance. If we consider how the world’s best golfers create peak performance, it is through an approach that combines fearsome focus in the present moment, a singular focus on one shot at a time, and total immersion in the task until to the end result takes shape. Psychologists call this approach a mindful practice or mindfulness and it is essentially the opposite of multi-tasking. Mindfulness is the act of deliberately paying attention in a particular way. This particular way involves bringing the attention back to the present moment and being non-judgmental towards the content of our thoughts. In golf, mindfulness is like “zoning in”one shot at a time. Instead of dwelling on your last bad shot or thinking ahead and predicting your score for the last three holes, you bring careful attention to what is happening in the moment. It is a state of raised consciousness that allows you to make non-reactive, purposeful decisions over the shot at hand. For example, rather than ripping your driver off the tee because you three putted the last green, you will be ready to commit to a smooth, calm swing and focus on your target instead of your score.
Imagine the benefits of playing golf with full commitment to your shot in the present moment, free from judgment and emotional reactions. As idealistic as that sounds for many weekend golfers, it can be achieved and it is easier than you think. Here are 5 ways to begin mindful practice on your next game or practice session leading to greater enjoyment and improved performance. Create a circle of focus: Imagine a large circle around your ball and only step into that circle when your mind is set on your shot selection and you are committed to your shot. If you are caught in two minds, or still talking to your playing partner, don’t step into your circle until you have a clear plan. Minimise multi-tasking and distractions: Instead of reacting to your phone when ever you hear it, choose to reply to messages and emails in these two zones: 1) before the round, 2) after the first nine holes and before the 10th tee.
Let go of a poor shot or bad hole: In his prime, Vijay Singh had one of the most prominent post-shot routines to leave poor shots behind. Vijay would re-engage his practice swing and visualise the ball going exactly where he wanted it to go, moving to the next shot with a positive image in his mind. To enhance this practice further, place your club back into your bag only after you have wiped the poor shot from your mind. Don’t play “there-abouts” golf: Acknowledge that feeling of indecisiveness over the ball. This is an important habit in playing mindful golf. Walk away from the shot and start again if you are not fully committed and take multiple clubs to your ball if needed. On the range: Resist the urge to mindlessly rake the ball onto the mat and rapidly fire shots. Set up as you would on the course and simulate your routine. Take your time and make sure you pick a specific target on the range.

CMA-A Confers Certified Club Manager Accreditation to Laguna National’s Managing Director With the 2014 launch of the Club Managers Association of Asia Pacific (CMA-Asia) the sister organization to the internationally recognised CMAA (Club Managers’ Association of America) they communicated the time has come in 2015 to recognise a team of managing directors and general managers who can serve as the “face of the profession” to the world. To honour them, the CMA-Asia in conjunction with the CMA-Asia e-University has decided to bestow upon a pioneer group of general managers with the Honorary Asian Certified Club Managers certification (ACCM). The CCM accreditation is a widely sought after title within their North American counterpart and now it has come to Asia. The recipients have been selected on the basis of the following criteria: • Length of service in club management; • Experience in club general management; • Related management experience; • contribution to the development of golf in Asia Pacific; This elite group of ACCMs will play a key role in elevating and upgrading the club management profession in the region. Patrick is joined by a small group of 9 other individuals who were selected to be awarded

this certification, including the General Manager of Thai Country Club, the President of Orchard Golf & Country Club, Philippines and the General Director of Black Mountain Golf Club, Thailand. The recipients will be formally recognized during the staging of the 2015 Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Singapore on October 14-15. Upon being advised of the certification being conferred on him, Patrick shared the following; “I am very appreciative that perhaps in some small way I have been able to contribute to the quality of the golf experience which exists today in Asia Pacific. However, it is never achieved alone and I have benefitted greatly from working with team members from many countries throughout Asia Pacific all striving to become more professional at their chosen career of golf and business. I only hope that I have been able to share some of my experience to their benefit and I will continue to steward careers and professions whenever I can.”
DID YOU KNOW... Golfers in Singapore often find themselves waiting out a dreadfully long lightning warning, or in some instances, extended warnings. Under such circumstances, one can choose to take a rain check and return for the game on another day. However, there are specific rules governing the eligibility and usage of rain checks and here is a simple check list that will help you decide if your guest is eligible for a rain check.
1
A rain check for a 9-hole game will be issued if the player has teed off and played less than 9 holes.
2
A player will not be entitled to a rain check if he/ she has crossed over for the second nine.
3
A rain check will only be issued in the event of a lightning warning.
4
The rain check can be collected from CSA and will be valid for one month from the date of issue.
5
Rain checks will only be issued to full paying guests, and are not valid in conjunction with other promotion or voucher.
6
On the next visit, upon presentation of the rain check, the guest will only be required to pay half of the full green fee amount for an 18-hole game.
We hope this check list has been useful and points mentioned above are drawn from section 3.4.7 of the Bye-Laws. Should you have queries, feel free to contact our Customer Service Officers at 6248 1777/ 778.

Black Mountain Hua Hin Eight years since it opened, Black Mountain Golf Club near Hua Hin is widely acknowledged as the Kingdom’s finest public-access golf course and one of the great championship courses in Asia.
34 | Privilege
Black Mountain Hua Hin is a fully integrated lifestyle and leisure resort, which also features villas, condominiums, a water park and wakeboard park, spa, restaurant and a wonderful ambience in the hills outside Hua Hin, a booming tourism centre on the Gulf of Thailand, 200 kilometres south of Bangkok. New villas and townhouses being built on the property, including some alongside the 18-hole championship course, will make Black Mountain even more appealing to owners, investors and visitors and provide a much wider choice of accommodation. Earlier this year Black Mountain hosted the first of three jointly sanctioned European Tour and Asian Tour professional tournaments to be held at the course, the Thailand Masters, won by Australian Andrew Dodt. Beamed on television throughout Asia and Europe, the event firmly entrenched Black Mountain as Thailand’s highest profile and “must-play” golf course. Following the event, Black Mountain became a member of the European Tour Properties, an elite collection of golf resorts throughout Europe, with one in the Middle East, and Black Mountain as the only member property in Asia.
As a golf course, Black Mountain is truly exceptional. Playing 7550 yards from the back tees, it offers a sterling test for top professionals, but with numerous forward tees and generous fairways is also a delight to play for amateurs. In 2009, just a year after it opened, Black Mountain was named at the Asia Pacific Golf Awards as the best championship course in Thailand. A year later, the course hosted the Black Mountain Masters and was voted host venue of the year by players on the Asian Tour.
Privilege | 35
In 2011, Black Mountain was named best course in Thailand and best championship course in Asia Pacific at the Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Pattaya, Thailand, the same year it hosted the biennial Royal Trophy between Asia and Europe, won by the visitors. In May 2012, Black Mountain became the first course in Thailand to be included in the US Golf Digest list of the Best 100 Courses Outside the United States. The list included only 14 courses in Asia. At the fourth annual Asian Golf Tourism Convention in Jakarta in April, Black Mountain became the first course in Thailand to receive a Diamond Award from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). The award recognises Black Mountain’s outstanding quality in playing experience, presentation and customer service. Black Mountain’s many awards have not gone unnoticed among discerning golf travellers, who have made Hua Hin Thailand’s premier golf destination. The region has been made famous as the Thai Royal Family holiday destination since King Rama VII built a summer palace there in 1926. Black Mountain features four key elements of a great golf course: design, presentation, visual appeal and the highest service standards.
36 | Privilege
The undulating landscape enabled elevation changes to be used to maximum advantage, with many stunning uphill and downhill holes, many with water features. When it comes to visual appeal, Black Mountain has few peers. The views on and off the course are stunning, especially looking west to the Burmese Mountains at sunset. Course conditioning and presentation is also first class and an open-air restaurant overlooking the course is a perfect place to relax before and after a round. As a true destination resort, Black Mountain is one of few in Thailand that has everything on site – accommodation, golf, a supermarket and bakery, restaurant, spa, tennis and other leisure facilities. Black Mountain has entered into a new reciprocal arrangement with Laguna National Golf & Country Club that gives each Club Member a unique experience and enjoyment of the facilities of the two clubs at discounted rates. Black Mountain’s Managing Director Harald Elisson said, “the club is looking forward to welcoming many Laguna National Members and present them with the opportunity to play our championship course as well as enjoy the other wonderful facilities available”.
