GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE Dear Members, As we prepare to unwind, relax and celebrate the joyous holiday season, I would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt congratulations to the newly crowned Club Champions 2013, Mr. Lion Goh and Ms. Michelle Bang. Well done and we will be seeing both your names on the Champion Name Boards soon. Bask in glory further with your personalized lockers and dedicated carpark lots for the next one year!
The annual Halloween beckons on 26th October at the Club with the promise of spooky fun and ‘trick or treat’. We hope you have started preparing your paranormal costumes and gloulish makeover for a chance to win the top prize in the Halloween Bash Costume Contest. When the nightmare before Christmas ends, don’t forget to check out our Christmas Goodies Takeaway and early Christmas Set Dinner at Lakes Café.
On behalf of the Management, I wish to give special thanks to a special group of Members who represented Laguna National to play at the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) Inter-Club League 2013. It has been a great year for both our Men’s and Ladies Division teams, finishing strong together with the overall team’s event positioning. On that note, we will be having our Men’s and Ladies Club Match-Play Championship during the month of October. Good luck to all who signed up!
As we prepare for the arrival of a New Year, it is important to pause for a moment and reflect on the year that has passed. This moment of reflection will help us gauge how far we have come and to celebrate our success with concrete milestones that have helped keep us on track and motivated towards our goal in building a world class golf resort hotel for our Members. 2013 has been a fruitful year for Laguna National in many respects, but also one that is very memorable for all of us. The upgrading project and the development of our world class golf resort

Laguna National 2040 – The Plans are underway In keeping with our commitment to the Membership to provide you with ongoing updates on the progress of the club upgrades, we continue on from the last quarter’s magazine in which we shared with you the announcement of the partnership with Dusit Thani Hotels & Resorts and the closing plans for key Country Club facilities. Timeline Update The upgrades consist of two main components, broken into various phases. The first component consists of the demolition of the area known as the “West Wing” of the Clubhouse and then the new construction of the planned hotel and country club in this same space. The second component is the refurbishment of the “East Wing” of the clubhouse to modernize and tie-in the part of the existing clubhouse structure which will remain intact. The line of demarcation between these two zones is essentially the boundary of the Japanese Restaurant Enmaru – and the areas either West (the Driving Range side) or East (the golf changing room side) of this line. The first phase of the West Wing demolition has commenced with the Driving Range and Lap Swimming Pool closed effective August 31st. Hoarding of these areas should be completed by the end of September 2013. The demolition contract has been awarded successfully and demolition is slated to start shortly thereafter.

The second phase of the West Wing closure and demolition will see the remaining Country Club facilities close on October 31st. This will include the resort Swimming Pool, Gym, Adeva Spa, Pebble Beach Café, Pine Valley Chinese Restaurant, Events Room, Aerobics Studio, as well as, the closure and relocation of the two Japanese restaurants. This has been previously communicated to all Country Club Members, with options provided for them to either continue using the temporary facilities and reciprocal arrangements which the management has planned for or to opt out from paying dues during the time of construction and resume once the facilities are reopened. Demolition on the remaining “West Wing” is then expected to commence towards the end of the first quarter in 2014. With regards to the “East Wing” refurbishment, the Golfer Lobby, Pro Shop, Bag Drop, Reception, Lakes Café, Banquet Facilities and Changing Rooms are projected to close in June 2014. After this time, comfortable but temporary facilities will be provided so that you may continue to enjoy both the Masters

Work to prepare these facilities is expected to commence by the first quarter of 2014 and you will see some impact from these ongoing preparations. The projected Grand Opening date for the hotel and completed Golf and Country Club Clubhouse is slated for the first quarter of 2016. Unique Accommodation Options for Members And Their Guests As part of the new Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore, Members will have access to some very unique and attractive accommodation options. For Members seeking more privacy and space, the resort will also feature 8 “Golfer Villas” strategically overlooking the 1st hole of the menacing World Classic course. Practice And Training Facility – The Best For Your Game With the demolition of the existing Driving Range, the opportunity has arisen to recreate our Practice and Teaching facilities into a state of the art facility. To that end, ownership has engaged world renowned IMG Golf Course Design to not only design the practice facility itself but to also include a short game/wedge zone, as well as, a 18-hole “putting course” to ensure a rounded practice experience. The practice field will feature target greens at strategic yardages, designed to simulate on-course shotmaking. The short game practice area will allow wedge shots to be hit from yardages of 10 – 80 yards from multiple angles. And finally, the 18-hole “putting course” will not only allow you to hone your putting skills but will also serve as a great introduction to the game for Members having junior Members in their household and who are maybe not yet ready to tackle the regulation golf courses. A natural turf tee and 25 private hitting bays will be available to Members. Architect’s rendering of the Golf Villas, overlooking the 1st hole of the World Classic and the new Country Club Pool.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as we embark on the development and upgrades at Laguna National and look forward to providing continuing updates in the future.

MEET GOLF’S YOUNG STARS OF THE FUTURE The Club Championship is an annual tournament where the Club’s best golfing Members battle it out in a 3-round tournament. This year, it has become a new platform for developing and promoting the next generation of young, successful golfers to a promising future in golf. We met up with the 3 young champions - Sean Lee, Lion Goh and Johnathan Ho – who dominated the course against their senior counterparts this season to find out more about their golfing aspirations. Sean Lee A Junior Member since February 2010, Sean Lee sets the record as the youngest Club champion in Laguna at the age of 9. He started playing at a tender age of 5 and soon discovered his passion for the game.
Lion Goh Son of Laguna Member, Joe Goh, Lion Goh practically grew up with the Club when he started golfing at 9 years old. His father has been a Member since January 1996. “I have been playing in all the Junior Tournaments held at Laguna so far. When I am not playing in tournaments, I play with the other senior Members, so competing with adults is nothing new to me.”
Johnathan Ho Johnathan Ho is one of the Club’s most active golfers. Although he started golfing at a slightly later age (10 years old), as compared to the previous two champions, his passion and talent are evident in his approach to the sport.
This promising young golfer has recently graduated from UC Berkeley and is now spending most of his time improving his game. He looks up to celebrity pro golfers such as Tiger Woods. “My Dad is an avid golfer. He was the one who gave me my first driving range experience.”
“My mantra in everything I do is - to have fun. When you are having fun and are enjoying the things you do, you tend to put more effort into it. My Dad (Jeffry Ho, a Member since February 1997) was the one who got me started in golf. He is one of my biggest influences in life and I wish to beat him in a game of golf someday!”
A seasoned competitor at a young age, Sean is unfazed when he plays with adult competitors. Apart from the Club Championship, he has also participated in a number of tournaments in Keppel Club, Palm Resort and National Service Recreation Country Club. His most unforgettable golfing moments? “I played the Club Championship on a Saturday, hit a Hole-In-One at a Par-3 hole at Keppel Club the next day and on the following Monday, I came back from a 3-stroke deficit and won the Tiger Cubs Golf Championship at National Level!” he replied excitedly.
12
“My favorite golfer is Tiger Woods. I love the way he plays his short game. Personally, I enjoy playing on the World Classic very much. It is a very challenging course with many difficult scenarios, but it is also a great place to practice my game!”
LAGUNA LIFESTYLE | OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2013
Balancing school and work is no mean feat. For Johnathan, he follows a tight schedule, golfing in the morning and studying in the evening. “My favorite Golf Pro is my coach, Allen Kelly. He is a great mentor and friend. If there is one advice I can give to other juniors who are thinking of improving their golf game, it would be - do not forget your golf etiquette and always remember to have fun.”

TifEagle was planted on greens and TifSport on the fairways, tees and rough, creating an all-around “new course feel” for our members and guests. Most recently, we have renovated our short-game practice area, enhancing our multiple practice areas for members and guests. The course provides a rewarding golf experience at every level. Impeccably maintained year-round, IMG Academy Golf Club continuously attracts those who demand the finest playing conditions, while serving as the home of the IMG Academy golf program that has produced such golfers as Paula Creamer, Sean O’Hair, Casey Wittenberg and countless others.

Member’s Interview: SGA Inter-Club League Team Every year, Laguna National is represented by a special group of Members at the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) Inter-Club League. The team is made up of some of the best golfers within the Club such as Dr. Joseph Soh, Member of Laguna National since 2012. A proficient golfer who holds a handicap index of 11.1, Dr. Joseph has won all his single matches at the recent Singapore Golf Association (SGA) Inter-Club League, making him the best performing team player of the season. A humble and earnest player who embodies the true Lagunian spirit, Dr. Soh claims that his ‘secret’ to playing well is – to familarise himself with his “battleground’. When did you get into the Laguna National SGA Inter-Club League Team? I joined Laguna slightly less than 2 years ago and got into the league team this year. The League Members, as well as, the Management of the Club, especially Bradley (General Manager), have been most supportive. That made it really easy and fun. What is your winning formula? Well, for any competitive sport, one must always prepare well before the game. Practice round is extremely important to familiarise oneself with the course and plan your strategy. There must always be a game plan on how to play the course. Most importantly, start calm and stay collected throughout the game. What was one of your most memorable games? It would be the game against SAFRA. There was so much hype about them being the best team. No doubt they won in the end, I did however, managed to win my singles game 6 and 5. That was really memorable for me. What does team spirit do for you and how would you define that? When playing for the league, commitment and team spirit are extremely important to me. Team spirit is built throughout the season when everybody makes an effort to come together to form a strong team. Ever since joining the league team, I have experienced some of the best times in my golfing life. There is one incident when my Captain, Thomas Lim, was unable to play due to an illness. He actually went to the Church to pray for the team’s victory and guess what? We won! It was funny and heart-warming at the same time but I guess that is what team spirit is all about.

Interview with Unho Park At the annual Laguna National Masters Tournament 2013, Singapore-based Australian Golf Pro, Unho Park speaks about how the Masters Course serves as an excellent test for all golfers and conquering it is no easy feat. With a final score of 73–74–65, Unho successfully turned the tide with three birdies in five holes during the concluding round, edging out second place Scott Barr and third place Mardan Marmat to capture the top spot.

“I find it easier to play the course when I am able to shape my shots. I would hit a draw off the tee if it is a dogleg left hole. However, if it is a dogleg right hole, I would hit a fade off the tee instead. I employ this strategy not only for the tee shots but also for the approach shots.”
Home to two of the most formidable courses in Asia, Laguna National was proud to host the bevy of golf pros from the Singapore Professional Golfer’s Association (SPGA) on the Masters course for the annual Laguna National Masters Tournament held on July 23. The Masters course is often deemed as the “easier” course, as compared to the World Classic course by many. However, conquering the former is no piece of cake according to Singapore-based Australian Golf Pro, Unho Park. Over the 3-day tournament, Unho Park defeated the likes of Prudential Causeway Trophy’s Team Singapore representatives, Mardan Marmat and Quincy Quek, with his decisive strokes and precise putts. For the conquering hero, coming back from 4 strokes down in the final round was no easy challenge and being able to do

According to Unho, starting the ball in the middle of the green gives the golfer the liberty to either draw or fade the ball to the pin, depending on which side of the green the pin is on. This method basically eliminates short siding and in turn, creates a lot of birdie opportunities. “The greens on the Masters have always
“The Masters course is an excellent test for any individual. The design is such that it tests every aspect of one’s game and I think that was Andy Dye’s intention when designing the course.” – Unho Park that on the Masters course made it even more special. “I played exceptionally well on the final day to sneak past the leaders. It was no easy task and I was glad that I was up to the challenge. To play well on the Masters course or any course for that matter, you need to hit fairways, greens and finally, hole the putts. Sounds easy, right? It’s actually not. You still need to execute the shots and hope the ball goes where you want it to go.”

been outstanding. I always like to die my putts, hence, I allow a little more break and focus on the ball entering the hole from the high side. This helps to avoid killing the momentum and more importantly, three putts. Don’t forget to pay attention to the grain too. Being familiar with the layout of the course, knowing where the dangers lie helps!” One last tip from Unho for those who aspire to conquer the Masters course stay out of the water!
