with international talent, there were many missing. A lack of California artists represented in exhibitions is often the case at most museums outside of California. So a question presents itself, “Is there only one California artist who warrants international recognition?” California art history is still largely unwritten and deserves to be placed within the context of the larger national and international art dialogue in order to bring recognition to the contributions made by artists from California. This is the impact that Laguna Art Museum makes through its exhibitions of work by artists such as Paul Outerbridge (1981), John McLaughlin (1996), and, opening in June 2012, Clarence Hinkle. Photo by Ed Olen Photography

One can hardly escape the current media blitz surrounding Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, a collaboration of over sixty cultural institutions across Southern California coming together to celebrate the birth of the L.A. art scene. From October 2011 through April 2012 Los Angeles artists are celebrated, studied, and honored to a greater extent than any time in history thanks to this initiative of The Getty Foundation. Step outside of Southern California, however, and that is not necessarily the case.

During a recent trip to Spain I visited Guggenheim Bilbao and the Reina Sofia in Madrid, both of which held exhibitions of international post-World War II painting. I was pleased to find work by at least one California artist at both museums; ironically it was the same artist at both, Sam Francis (1923, San Mateo, California–1994, Santa Monica, California). On one hand, it was wonderful to see an artist from my home state represented in international exhibitions, but on the other hand, with only one California artist in an exhibition packed

So, in fact, it’s not a region or a state that Laguna Art Museum seeks to acknowledge by focusing on the art of California. Instead it’s the creative output of a society that we bring to light in an effort to illuminate the full spectrum of creative human endeavor. If art is like a color wheel, how complete would it be if you eliminated one of its primary colors, red, yellow, or blue—its brightness would be diminished by more than half. Eliminate red and you also loose orange and violet. As with a color wheel, the history of art is more colorful, if you will, when you include all its

components. It’s this mission that the volunteers, staff, and Board of Trustees of Laguna Art Museum are excited and privileged to share with our community through the generous support of our members. During the past fourteen years much of the museum’s success has been due to the dedicated efforts of Bolton Colburn, the museum’s director until he stepped down in May 2011. As the first director of the reestablished Laguna Art Museum, Bolton guided the museum to its current place of prominence as a respected and scholarly regional museum. We now look forward to an exciting new generation of leadership under our new executive director, Malcolm Warner—an arts leader and internationally recognized scholar with a reputation of the highest caliber in the museum industry—who officially joined the museum on January 3, 2012. I thank the Board of Trustees and executive search committee for choosing such an exceptional person to lead our museum. Laguna Art Museum is positioned for incredible growth both as an exemplary regional museum and as a valuable resource to the local community. Whether you are a new member or a long-term supporter of the museum, I thank you for your support and ask you to join us as we reach for new heights.

SPOTLIGHT ON NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MALCOLM WARNER Malcolm Warner joins Laguna Art Museum from the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked for ten years— first as senior curator, then as deputy director. He also served for a period of eighteen months as the Kimbell’s acting director. He was previously curator of European art at the San Diego Museum of Art and senior curator of paintings and sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art. While at the Kimbell, Dr. Warner curated Stubbs and the Horse, also shown at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, and the National Gallery, London (2004-2005); The Mirror and the Mask: Portraiture in the Age of Picasso, also shown at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid (2007); and Butchers, Dragons, Gods & Skeletons: Film Installations by Philip Haas Inspired by Works in the Collection (2009). The Mirror and the Mask was Apollo magazine’s Exhibition of the Year in 2007, and Butchers, Dragons, Gods & Skeletons was listed as no. 7 in Time magazine’s Top Ten Exhibitions of 2009. Dr. Warner was born in Aldershot, England, and pursued both undergraduate and graduate studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. He received his PhD from the Courtauld in 1985. His doctoral dissertation was on the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais. He remains the leading authority on Millais and, as a long-term project, is preparing a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works. Among the exhibitions that he curated before joining the Kimbell are The Victorians: British Painting in the Reign of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1997); This Other Eden: British Paintings from the Paul Mellon Collection at Yale, which toured Australian museums (1998); Millais: Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, London (1999); James Tissot: Victorian Life/Modern Love at the Yale Center for British Art and other venues (1999); and Great British Paintings from American Collections: Holbein to Hockney at Yale and the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California (2001-2002).

February 26–April 29, 2012 Following its exhibition Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971, Laguna Art Museum stays with the theme of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, an initiative of the Getty Foundation exploring art in Southern California from 1945 to 1980. The museum will explore its own permanent collection in the exhibition The Postwar Era: From the Collection, 1945-1980, to reveal important works from that time period. In addition to artists who were featured in Pacific Standard Time exhibitions throughout Southern California, the museum will look at artists who may have been overlooked in this ambitious initiative. Curated by Janet Blake and Grace Kook-Anderson, The Postwar Era will include works by Francis De Erdely, Phil Dike, Keith Finch, George Herms, Lorser Feitelson, Llyn Foulkes, Roger Kuntz, Rico Lebrun, John McLaughlin, Lee Mullican, DeWain Valentine, and Jeffrey Vallance, among others. Presented by: ROHL LLC Lead sponsor: Sierra Nevada Investment Group Media sponsor: Univision Additional support is generously provided by Mark and Kimberly Warwick; Louis and Laura Rohl; SCAPE | Southern California Art Projects and Exhibitions, Corona del Mar, California; Dr. John and Nancy Link; James R. Negele and Jean Thorne; and Anna Petrossian. Victor Hugo Zayas: Mi Obra focuses on the past twenty years of Zayas’s career. With a keen sense of observation, Zayas works swiftly. His subject matter encompasses the figure, landscape, and cityscape; he paints with breadth and generosity on canvas and, surprisingly, paper. Looking to works by European masters such as Velázquez, Titian, Rembrandt, Fragonard, and Goya, Zayas has developed an expressionist style that renders landscape as visceral, moody, and passionate. The exhibition will also include Zayas’s sculptures made of metal; these largely linear and abstract works convey a sense of movement as they draw attention to form. The expressionist energy seen in the paintings is transformed in the formal composition and negative spaces of his sculptures. Zayas will also create a new large-scale sculpture that will be donated to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). For this, Zayas will use pieces of destroyed guns from the LAPD Gun Buyback Program. From weapons capable of causing violence, Zayas will create a sculpture symbolizing peace. This work will be displayed for the first time at Laguna Art Museum as part of Mi Obra before being

gifted to the LAPD. Born in 1961 and raised in Mazatlan, Mexico, Zayas came to the United States in 1979. He graduated from United States International University in 1981 with a BFA and was awarded a Robert Kanyon Memorial Scholarship to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he earned another BFA in 1986. He taught at Loyola Marymount University from 1987 to 1993. In 2005, Zayas created the Maestro Fine Arts Program in collaboration with Art Center College of Design, underwritten by the James Irvine Foundation. Along with Errol Gerson, Zayas founded the Dwight Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund at Art Center. Zayas has lived and worked in Los Angeles for the past thirty years. Victor Hugo Zayas: Mi Obra is curated by independent curator Gregorio Luke, an expert on Mexican and Latin American art and culture. Accompanying the exhibition will be a catalogue produced by Laguna Art Museum and designed by The Small Ad Shop, featuring an essay by art writer Peter Frank, a foreword by Gregorio Luke, and an introduction by Janet Blake. Clarence Hinkle and the Group of Eight, curated by Curator of Collections Janet Blake, will be on display in the museum’s main galleries during the summer of 2012. A native Californian, Clarence Hinkle (1880–1960) had a career as an artist and teacher that spanned several decades. He was associated with other American impressionists from California, Hinkle’s highly individual work from the period of the 1920s sets him apart from other artists of his generation. Born in Auburn in 1880, he began his studies at the Crocker Art Gallery in Sacramento, followed by classes at the California School of Design in San Francisco. He traveled east, studying at the Art Students League in New York and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he won the Cresson Traveling Scholarship. The scholarship afforded him the opportunity to study and work in Europe for six years. After returning to the United States in 1912, he lived in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles in 1917, where he began teaching at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design. Four years later, he accepted a position at the newly founded Chouinard School of Art.

During his years as a teacher, Hinkle lived in Laguna Beach, where he was a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association. In 1935, Hinkle relocated to Santa Barbara and became an active member of the art community and a teacher at the Santa Barbara School of Art. His career as a teacher won him accolades from many in the next generation of artists, among them Phil Dike and Millard Sheets, both of whom studied at Chouinard. Hinkle’s early works reflect the traditional approach of the impressionists, but he soon began exploring post-impressionist and modernist techniques, utilizing an expressive, gestural brushstroke and semiabstract forms. His subject matter included portraits, figural works, landscapes, and still lifes— all of which will be featured in the exhibition of more than seventy-five works. Works by the Group of Eight will be featured in the concurrent exhibition Wayward Sensibility: The Group of Eight and Los Angeles Art of the 1920s. During the 1920s, Hinkle was a member of the progressive Group of Eight, which included artists Mabel Alvarez, Henri de Kruif, John

Hubbard Rich, Donna Schuster, E. Roscoe Shrader, and Edouard and Luvena Vysekal. Besides showcasing works by Clarence Hinkle, the exhibition will include a selection of works by these artists, who will be examined in depth as part of the progressive movement in Los Angeles in the 1920s. Wayward Sensibility is curated by art historian Susan Anderson. Early progressive groups like the Group of Eight constituted the initial phase of Modernism in Los Angeles. To the progressive artist, a painting, before representing anything, was perceived as a flat surface covered with expressive, ordered patches of color. The artists drew upon the lessons of Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Neo-Impressionism, as well as the teachings of Robert Henri and The Eight in New York. In landscape painting, for example, the aim of the progressives was less the realistic description of California's bounty and more the expression of the artist's inner, emotional response to the land. The museum will publish a 144-page hardcover book in conjunction with Clarence Hinkle and the Group of Eight. UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

November 4, 2012–January 27, 2013 On the upper level of the museum in fall 2012 will be an exhibition of the work of Timothy J. Clark, an internationally recognized artist who has studios in Capistrano Beach, New York City, and West Bath, Maine. Clark (born 1951), a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts and the Chouinard Art Institute, has garnered a reputation as both a painter and a teacher of watercolor. He is a faculty member of the Art Students League in New York City and has taught at numerous other institutions including the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the National Academy School in New York. He also conducts painting workshops at locations in the United States and Europe. Watercolor magazine Tim Clark Beachfire, 2007 named Clark one of the “20 Great Teachers in Watercolor on paper 14 x 22 inches America” in 2006 and again in 2009. Clark’s Collection of York and Shelley Sutch watercolor paintings are exquisitely rendered and infused with color and light, recalling the work of late-nineteenth-century artists John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer. Clark’s watercolor and oil paintings are in many public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, The Butler Institute of American Art, and the Farnsworth Art Museum. An inveterate sketcher, within days after the 9/11 attack, Clark created a sketchbook of drawings at Ground Zero, which was acquired for the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition will be curated by Curator of Collections Janet Blake and will include landscape, still life, and figural works. New Contemporary Art Program Laguna Art Museum is excited to announce ex·pose, the new contemporary art program curated by Grace KookAnderson. Ms. Kook-Anderson is the curator of exhibitions at Laguna Art Museum and specializes in contemporary art. ex·pose will feature rotating exhibitions focusing on one emerging artist or mid-career artist at a time. Instead of being displayed in a dedicated space at the museum, each exhibition will be installed in a way that is tailored to each artist’s project. The program aims to present a diverse range of artists working in all mediums and rooted in a conceptual foundation. This program will kick off in summer 2012, and each ex·pose exhibition will encourage artists to take the opportunity to create new work. Previous examples of similar exhibitions at Laguna Art Museum include Jeremy Fish: Weathering the Storm (fall 2009); Sean Duffy: Searcher (fall 2010); Brad Coleman: Reproductions (spring 2011); and Lita Albuquerque: Emergence (summer 2011). These exhibitions can be seen as a case study to create a platform for a rotating contemporary art project at Laguna Art Museum. June 10-October 7, 2012 Based in Laguna Beach, Peter Bo Rappmund is a recent graduate of California Institute of the Arts (2010). Working mainly in film, video, and sound, he will be showing two recent works and a new project that will be exhibited for the first time. Bo Rappmund’s working process is a lengthy one, recording natural and rhythmic changes in the landscape, often covering much geographical ground. In Psychohydrography (2010), he films the flow of water from the Sierra Mountains down to the Los Angeles Aqueduct, ending in the Pacific Ocean. The time-lapse film follows our water source in a way that many viewers do not have the opportunity to know first hand, creating a larger understanding of where our water comes from.

November 4, 2012January 27, 2013 Macha Suzuki’s installations convey a sense of narrative that is strangely familiar, highly attractive, yet also dark and disruptive. Suzuki’s installations blend the dualities of representation and abstract forms. Figurative elements are suspended in a place of fantasy with bright colors and glossy surfaces. Suzuki’s sculptures are highly crafted, using a mixture of materials that may include epoxy clay, fluorescent lights, plastic, and Bondo. In Permission to Fail (2010), the word “fail” never looked more inviting and hopeful. The word is portrayed in bright pink, appearing to have been formed by the construction of branches and is surrounded by green leaves, like newly sprouted foliage, perhaps implying growth as a result of learned failures.

February-May, 2013 Allison Schulnik’s paintings, sculptures, and clay animations are all realized in terms of gutsy, expressionistic, surreal forms. Bright colors emerge through an overall dark palette, and paintings and clay animations alike take on the sense of an ever-morphing figure. Schulnik’s figures of hobos, clowns, and creatures intertwine into part of the environment, and each other, forming moments of abstraction and then a semblance of representation again. Influenced by kindred artists of the past such as James Ensor (18601949), Schulnik continues in the vein of surreal imagery that is haunting, mournful, and beautiful all at once.

Laguna Art Museum Student Members from laguna college of art + design This list indicates LCAD student members of Laguna Art Museum since September 2011. This list is current as of December 28, 2011.

NEW COLLABORATION LAGUNA ART MUSEUM AND LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN In 2011 Laguna Art Museum and Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) announced a new collaboration that will further engage students with the museum and extend the relationship between the two institutions and their community. As part of this new collaboration, Laguna Art Museum is offering current LCAD students free memberships so that they can visit the museum's exhibitions and attend its education programs for free year round. Additionally, as one of their membership benefits, students now have access to the museum’s Carole Reynolds Art Research Library, where they can research the museum’s California art-focused resources. “We are excited that these students will be able to take advantage of our museum, which is such a great resource for them here in the community where they go to school,” said Laguna Art Museum’s membership manager Dawn Minegar. The museum and LCAD have worked together to institute a new LCAD Museum Club that is made up of LCAD students who want to support the museum through volunteerism and to participate in museum activities as a social group. In October 2011, the club had a private tour of Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971 with exhibition curator Grace Kook-Anderson and one of its featured artists, Richard Newton. To encourage local art student participation, in fall 2011 the museum hosted a new LCAD Next Generation Paint-Out in conjunction with its 13th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational; at this event twenty LCAD fine art students participated in a paint-out in Heisler Park. Their paintings were judged by Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum, who awarded Gia Moody first place and a $500 scholarship, Sisi Chen second place and a $300 scholarship, and Kari Dunham third place and a $200 scholarship. The scholarships endeavor to cultivate the next generation of plein air painters and were sponsored by the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and LCAD. The winning paintings were on display at Laguna Art Museum during the exclusive Collectors’ Soirée, and the winners were invited to attend the exciting event. Finally, Laguna Art Museum will host LCAD's graduate MFA in Painting exhibition in spring 2012. LCAD’s MFA in Painting is a two-year program in which students turn focused research into the formal and conceptual potentials of representational painting. Designed as an immersion in the history, theory, and practice of representation, LCAD’s MFA in Painting program functions as a laboratory where students can investigate contemporary subject matter within the pictorial tradition. The MFA exhibition at Laguna Art Museum will show the breadth of this research from current MFA painting students. Save the Date! The LCAD MFA in Painting exhibition will take place May 5-27, 2012, at Laguna Art Museum. Laguna Art Museum will host LCAD’s MFA in Painting exhibition in spring 2012

SPOTLIGHT ON LCAD MUSEUM CLUB CO-LEADER MAGDALENA NILGES Laguna Art Museum: What is your major at LCAD? Magda: Fine Arts with a minor in Graphic Design. Laguna Art Museum: Why were you interested becoming a leader of the new LCAD Museum Club? Magda: I really wanted to do volunteer work, and the Museum Club was perfect because I can be involved with the community as well as work with art. It is the perfect combination. Laguna Art Museum: What is your favorite exhibition that you’ve seen at the museum? Magda: I really enjoyed the Noguchi exhibition, specifically the Akari lamps he created. The way the pieces were set up in the room created a beautiful interaction with the art. Magdalena Nilges heads the new LCAD Museum Club with co-leader Torsten Thorne.

PERMANENT COLLECTION on show at other institutions During the past year several works in the Laguna Art Museum collection have been in exhibitions at other institutions. Seven black-and-white photographs from the early 1970s by Lewis Baltz were included in the Art Institute of Chicago’s exhibition Lewis Baltz: Prototypes/Ronde de Nuit. The exhibition was on view from September 25, 2010 to January 17, 2011, after which it traveled to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., on view there from March 20 to July 31, 2011. The exhibition was curated by Matthew S. Witkowsky, who personally selected the seven works from the collection. Baltz, who was born in Newport Beach in 1945, created works between 1967 and 1971 that, according to Witkowsky, concentrated on “the dialectic between simple, regular geometric forms found in the postwar industrial landscape with the . . . culture that generated such forms, or was conditioned by them. Stucco walls, parking lots, the sides of warehouse sheds or disused billboards baked in the steady California sunlight—these and other ‘hyper-banal’ subjects were printed in blacks and whites of a breathtaking tonal evenness. In the spring, the museum lent its historic 1832 Ferdinand Deppe painting of the Mission San Gabriel to La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles for their inaugural exhibition LA Starts Here! Associate Curator Ken Luftig Viste wrote that the work would be an exciting addition to their exhibition because of its significance as one of the earliest known oil paintings made in California, and because its subject matter—the Mission San Gabriel—played a major role in the founding of Los Angeles. The Deppe painting, which was a gift from Nancy Dustin Wall Moure, was featured in the museum’s Collecting California exhibition in 2009.

NEW ACQUISITIONS In the past year, several new works were accessioned or formally placed into the collection. In December 2010, Nancy Dustin Wall Moure gifted the museum with two works that had been held in the collection as promised gifts. Both works were featured in the exhibition Collecting California in 2009. The first is Fernand Lungren, Bastions of the Painted Desert. Illustrator and landscape painter Fernand Lungren (1857–1932) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia for a brief period and continued his studies in Paris and London. Lungren worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator in New York City and Cincinnati, specializing in city street scenes and night scenes. Sponsored by the Santa Fe Railroad, Lungren made his first trip to the Southwest in 1892, and the railroad published some of his illustrations in their 1893 guidebook Grand Cañon of the Colorado River, Arizona. Under the railroad’s sponsorship, he made several more trips to the Southwest between 1894 and 1897. In 1903, Lungren moved to Los Angeles, then three years later to Santa Barbara, where he helped found the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. The California deserts

became a main theme in his art, and he would often take long trips to the Mojave Desert or to Death Valley. His desert paintings depict a stark and untouched environment, emphasizing a vast and lonely wilderness devoid of human presence. As seen in Bastions of the Painted Desert, Lungren often employed steep lines that converge toward the horizon and incorporated sharply angled foregrounds, giving the viewer a sense of looking into a long, expansive space. Long diagonal rows of sagebrush lead our eye to the distant mesa. Only a few white clouds appear in the clear blue sky. The second painting gifted by Nancy Moure is a work by hard-edge abstractionist painter Karl Benjamin— Abstraction. Benjamin (born 1925)

was included in the 1959 landmark Four Abstract Classicists exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Jules Langsner coined the term “hard-edge” in describing the works of Benjamin, John McLaughlin, Frederick Hammersley, and Lorser Feitelson. At the time of the exhibition, Benjamin was completing his studies at the Claremont Graduate School, graduating the following year. In a 1968 interview, Benjamin stated: “I am an intuitive painter, despite the ordered appearance of my paintings, and am fascinated by the infinite range of expression inherent in color relationships. For the past fifteen or twenty years, I have been working with systems including relatively simple numerical progressions, modular

PERMANENT COLLECTION Representing L.A., curated by Gordon Fuglie for the Frye Art Museum in 2001, and Whiteness: A Wayward Construction, curated by Tyler Stallings for Laguna Art Museum in 2003. Shelton’s paintings from the decade of the nineties are often multiple-panel works in which a single figure occupies one panel and the other panels have subtle gradations of color, which read as shadows cast by an external light source. The result is an isolated figure in a deliberately ambiguous space. In Whiteness, Stallings grouped Shelton’s work in the category “Mirror, Mirror,” in which white men in corporate America are forced to look at images of themselves that are sometimes disturbing.

constructions, and random sequences. Images formed thusly emerged in very surprising and gratuitous ways, as opposed to being drawn or designed in what had become, for me, on hindsight, a rather self-conscious operation.” Although in many works Benjamin incorporated pure geometric forms, in others—such as seen here— he created curved, organic shapes that he said were inspired by the works of Arshile Gorky. The museum collection holds one other work by Benjamin, from 1981, and hard-edge works by Feitelson, Hammersley, and McLaughlin. Early in 2011 the museum received two works as gifts from Gene H. LePere. LePere, who lives in Los Angeles, is the daughter of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, founder of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Richard Shelton's Messanger of the Gods is a 1996 oil and encaustic work on four wood panels. Shelton was born in Coronado, California, in 1945. A realist painter, his work has been included in several exhibitions over the last two decades, including

The other gift from Gene LePere is Helen Lundeberg’s Moonscape. Lundeberg (1908–1999) was one of the most important California modernist painters of the twentieth century. Throughout her sixty-year career, she created works that were imbued with her personal vision. Late in life, she observed, “My work has been concerned, in varying modes of pictorial structure and various degrees of representation and abstraction, with the effort to embody, and to evoke, sates of mind, moods and emotions.” Lundeberg studied at the Stickney Memorial School of Art in Pasadena with Lorser Feitelson (1898–1978).

subjects that served as a guide for the viewer in perceiving deeper meaning. Lorser Feitelson went on to become one of the leading California hard-edge painters of the 1950s and 1960s. Lundeberg, too, began to explore geometric abstraction in the 1950s, her works described as both formal and lyrical. Typically, they are painted in a limited palette, as seen in Moonscape. This work is from a period when the artist was exploring imagery that was associated with landscapes, interiors, still lifes, and planetary forms—compositions that she called enigmas. The museum collection holds another work by Lundeberg, Sundown Shadow, from 1983. In June 2011 the museum acquired a 1926 photograph of Edgar Payne by George Hurrell. Hurrell garnered his greatest reputation as a photographer of Hollywood movie stars beginning in the 1920s. Called the “Grand Seigneur of the Hollywood Portrait,” he was born in Covington, Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati. At a young age he developed an interest in painting and drawing. Learning how to use a camera in order to photograph his paintings, he soon discovered that photography held greater appeal. Hurrell studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in Chicago met artist Edgar Payne. Payne invited him to come to Laguna Beach in 1925 and photograph the leading artists of the Laguna Beach Art Association, which by then had gained a national reputation. After completing the commission, Hurrell settled in Los Angeles, where his Hollywood career began.

This exhibition was part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, which brought together more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. Pacific Standard Time was an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor was Bank of America. “Despite the narrative threads that must be laid down as a foundation, as well as the rise of conceptualism and the mantra that ‘painting is dead’ during this period, Best Kept is a surprisingly visual and abundant show. Multiple works by 40 artists fill the galleries, from Asher and Bell's light and space sculptures to Burden's photographs and lithographs to Moses' geometric paintings.” ~ Richard Chang, The Orange County Register “This desire to engage with the environment, to fuse art-making with real life, runs through Best Kept Secret. Indicative of the experimental zeitgeist of the time, UCI can take its rightful place in the historical vanguard of Southern California art.” ~ Sharon Mizota, The Los Angeles Times

Laguna Art Museum offers a wide information on upcoming lectures with variety of educational programming year experts and curators, workshops with round for all ages. artists, and hands-on art activities for families. New DISCUSSION Series: Conversation With… Tours Beginning in December 2011, Laguna Art Museum instituted a new discussion series called Conversation With… that takes place in conjunction with the Laguna Beach First Thursdays Art Walk. Conversation With… programs consist of enlightening and informal talks with visiting artists and encourage audience participation through active conversation. The guest artist will present a topic in a casual and informal environment, encouraging an engaging discussion with the audience. The museum is delighted to collaborate on this new series with the OC Great Park in Irvine and its artist-in-residence program. Conversation With… programs take place every first Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. and in the spirit of First Thursdays Art Walk are free to the public. The museum offers interactive exhibition tours led by a trained docent for all grade levels and groups. Contact the museum two weeks in advance to schedule a school or group tour of the museum’s exhibitions. Docents are also available for walk-in tours every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. beginning one week after an exhibition opens to the public. Walk-in tours are free for museum members, and free for non-members with paid admission. Additionally, in March, April, and May of each year, the museum offers a special tour program for third and fourth grade classes that is connected directly to the local and state history curriculum. The tour consists of a 90-minute program that is divided into two sessions. Session one is spent with a local artist in neighboring Heisler Park for a hands-on plein air drawing workshop, while session two is spent in the museum touring the current exhibition on view. This special program connects California history to the museum’s California-focused permanent collection and current exhibitions, encourages careful observation of art, and emphasizes the elements of art and principles of design.

SPOTLIGHT ON Docent Corps

Members of the Laguna Art Museum Docent Corps serve as ambassadors for the arts by providing interactive tours for visitors and school groups. Docents seek to engage museum visitors through discussion about the art in the rotating exhibitions. The Docent Corps is a highly trained group dedicated to working with the community to increase its understanding of the visual arts. Docent Corps members have completed a course which includes the philosophy and expectations of becoming a Laguna Art Museum docent. The docents are trained in a variety of subjects including the

elements of art, historical context, looking at and talking about art, engaging visitors, and touring with children and adults. “My favorite thing about being a docent is the learning, both for myself and as I see others learn from the tours we give,” said Caroline Koltai, who has been a Laguna Art Museum docent since 2004. “As docents, we share our insights with each other, so we learn not only from the material we are given to read and our own tours, but also from each other. When we give tours, we learn how others see the art and we gain new perspectives from that experience, too. It doesn't matter who the participants are—adults, teens or children—all have different views of the art and it widens our learning. I just love it!” Photo above left: The Laguna Art Museum Docent Corps (L-R): Barbara Howard, Tiffany Terra, Caroline Koltai, Lynne Schwartz, Maureen Somodi, Tracy Young, and Sally Whitfield. SPOTLIGHT ON INTERN LISA CAVIN

Lisa Cavin has been interning at Laguna Art Museum since December 2010. Laguna Art Museum: Tell us about yourself. Lisa: I have always been in love with art, even at a young age. My favorite book as a child was a giant encyclopedia filled with color plates of Impressionist works. My brother and I would flip through the pages, reveling in the brushstrokes, color and form (and giggling at the nudes, too). After becoming lost in that book one too many times, my family knew I was destined for the art world. From my father's skill in woodworking and painting, combined with my mother's handiness with a needle and thread, creativity is in my blood. I began as a Fine Art major, dreaming of becoming a Disney animator, but got cold feet and decided that I would have more luck studying contemporary artists rather than becoming one. I eventually enrolled at UC Irvine as an Art History major and immersed myself in all I could involving contemporary art, and becoming an intern at Laguna Art Museum added fuel to that fire. Laguna Art Museum: What has your role been as a curatorial intern?

Lisa: My life as a curatorial intern has been a unique one. Between all of the normal intern duties such as fetching coffee and staring at spreadsheets, I have had the opportunity to work side by side with curator Grace Kook-Anderson on amazing endeavors. I was brought in as an intern (and ended up as more of a sidekick) to work with Grace on Laguna Art Museum’s exhibition Best Kept Secret, which is part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative. I have been personally in charge of the online image and file database for Best Kept Secret, making material accessible to all of the different people working on the exhibition. I have assisted in handpicking images to be included in the exhibition catalogue, creating the exhibition audio tour, and I have been trusted to give input on exhibition design. I have also had the pleasure of accompanying Grace to visit galleries, attend openings, and to meet artists. Laguna Art Museum: What are you looking forward to next? Lisa: I hope to stay with Laguna Art Museum as long as they will have me, but I am looking forward to finishing my undergraduate education at UC Irvine and making the leap to grad school. My internship at Laguna Art Museum has given me fresh new ideas on career paths to take. I have been inspired to possibly pursue a degree in museum studies or curatorial practice, but most importantly to incorporate fine art back into my academic curriculum. No matter where I end up, I can always thank the wonderful staff at Laguna Art Museum for being an integral asset to my education, professional experience, and most of all, my passion for art! It is a rare and wonderful opportunity for you and your family to experience exceptional art close to home. Whether you are looking for the most current contemporary art or historic works by the founding artists of the Laguna Beach art colony, you need look no further than Laguna Art Museum. Laguna Art Museum is your museum! Perhaps a painting in a recent exhibition inspired you, or you met an artist and gained a different creative perspective during an opening party you attended. Maybe you were touched by seeing the creative spark ignited in a child during the Imagination Celebration or at the recent Kid’s Paint-Out at Heisler Park as part of the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. These are just a few of the opportunities that you make happen in your community by supporting your museum. Your contributions have helped make Laguna Art Museum a leading regional museum, and we have an exciting future ahead of us. The recent selection of Malcolm Warner—an internationally recognized scholar and arts leader—as the museum’s new executive director is a testament to the commitment of your museum in continuing to be, in his words, “a gem—a small institution with a great history, a youthful attitude, and the clear mission of showcasing the best of California art, past and present” for you and for every person in the community. Please help us continue to make this possible with your contribution.

Your gift of $100, $500, $1,000 or $5,000 can make all the difference. Please consider making as generous a gift as you can. Your donation will make a world of difference. I promise you. Thank you so much for your help. Sincerely, Robert Hayden III

Thanks to you, Laguna Art Museum is a strong community organization with a national reputation. We are so grateful to you for supporting our committed team of art educators. Your gift is extremely important to Laguna Art Museum because it provides resources that make an immediate impact, allowing us to provide enriching cultural and art education experiences for you and your community.

SPOTLIGHT ON

MUSEUM MEMBER JON-MICHAEL MARCONI Member since March 2011

Jon-Michael Marconi is a resident and local business owner in Laguna Beach. When he isn't practicing law, you may find him walking his dogs in Heisler Park, cooking with friends, or enjoying the sunset with a glass of wine. Laguna Art Museum: What made you want to join Laguna Art Museum as a member? Jon-Michael: My parents have always been very active in the art community and raised me to understand and appreciate art from a very young age. I became a member of LACMA and MOCA while an undergraduate at USC. I took a job at an art gallery in Beverly Hills and became the gallery director while attending college full time. I left the gallery to attend law school, but will always treasure the exposure I gained to the art world. After moving to Laguna Beach, it was a natural choice to become a member of Laguna Art Museum. Laguna Art Museum: What has been your favorite exhibition so far? Jon-Michael: I really enjoyed the Noguchi exhibition. I'm a fan of Noguchi's sensibility and the almost eerie sense of calm of his projects. Before I knew that Noguchi had designed it, I found myself mesmerized by the amazing outdoor space at an office building where I worked in Costa Mesa. I quickly discovered that it was called California Scenario and was the brainchild of Isamu Noguchi.

SPOTLIGHT ON

MUSEUM MEMBERS RICH AND LEONE ADLER Members since January 2006

The Adlers live in Orange and have been members of the museum since 2006. They enjoy bicycling, running and traveling. Rich is the Real Estate Manager for OC Parks, the County’s regional park system, and deals with many properties, such as Irvine Regional Park and the beaches in South Laguna, which are well represented visually in the museum's collection. Leone is retired and has enjoyed volunteering at the museum. Laguna Art Museum: What have been your favorite exhibitions? Rich and Leone: We both really appreciate the variety of works in the museum's permanent collection, and exhibitions featuring them—like the current California artists on display in the museum’s upstairs gallery—are always favorites of ours. Also exhibitions that include scenes of Orange County and Southern California, such as the William Wendt exhibition in 2009, are great for connecting to our local world. Then there are the excellent single artist exhibitions, such as the recent ones featuring Wayne Thiebaud and Roger Kuntz; they really give you a feel for why the artists are so special in the world of California art. Laguna Art Museum: What do you most enjoy about being members? Rich and Leone: We both enjoy supporting the arts, particularly close to home. We see our membership, and our contributions to the Annual Fund, as an investment in an important cultural legacy for Orange County. Plus, visiting Laguna Beach is fun for us, and stopping at the museum is always a treat. It's also nice to attend the openings and—on occasion—meet the artists represented in the exhibitions.

ART RESEARCH LIBRARY Carole Reynolds in front of the newly named library

LAGUNA ART MUSEUM RENAMES LIBRARY AFTER LONGTIME VOLUNTEER LIBRARIAN In September 2011, the museum library was dedicated as the Carole Reynolds Art Research Library, in honor of longtime volunteer librarian Carole Reynolds. “When Board President Robert Hayden III came into the library one morning, accompanied by the entire museum staff, I was more than curious,” said Mrs. Reynolds. “When he proceeded to announce that Laguna Art Museum's library would henceforth be named the Carole Reynolds Art Research Library, I was speechless—which is rare for me.”

Carole organizing books and volunteers in the museum library

Longtime Laguna Beach resident Carole Reynolds has volunteered at Laguna Art Museum since 1984 and has been the volunteer librarian since 1991. Her many capacities at the museum have been as a docent for 18 years, as a founding member of the Arts Council, and as an assistant to the Art Rental Gallery, where she arranged studio visits. In the community, Mrs. Reynolds is president of the Friends of the Library, member (and one-time chairman) of the Laguna Beach Art Commission, and co-founder of Community Art Project. Mrs. Reynolds also set up the library at the Laguna College of Art + Design, selecting a core collection of 10,000 volumes, helping to assure the school’s accreditation. “I am now basking in the glow of such special recognition, especially since I have so enjoyed my twenty years of volunteering my professional skills, during which time the card catalog was transformed into an on-line public access one, available to all through the museum website,” said Mrs. Reynolds. “As a professionally trained librarian, it's been a ‘busman’s holiday’, as they say, which through the years has engaged, enlightened, delighted, and further educated me in the world of art and all its diversity. I am grateful and honored by this recognition and want to thank so many others who have helped along the way to make our collection of books on California art among the best in the country.” Mrs. Reynolds was a journalism and art history major at Stanford. She holds a master’s degree in library science from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. She has worked at La Canada-Flintridge Unified School District, Dana Hills High School (where she selected 10,000 books for the school’s opening in 1973), and worked fifteen years for the Capistrano Unified School District. The Carole Reynolds Art Research Library is housed in the boardroom of the administrative offices on the upper level of the museum, and is professionally staffed solely by volunteers. There are more than 5,000 books, many with a focus on California art and artists. There are also “single-artist files” in the executive director’s office, in the administration offices, and in the Graphics Study Room on the lower level. Some of those historical files date from the 1930s. The library can be accessed via the museum’s website and via appointment. Although it is not a lending library, people can make an appointment to study and do research at the museum. To make an appointment to visit the library, please contact Carole Reynolds at creynolds@lagunaartmuseum.org or 949.494.8971 x214.

VOLUNTEER AT LAGUNA ART MUSEUM

Volunteers Michelle Schumacher and Carolyn King

Laguna Art Museum offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are among the museum’s richest resources. The museum is always searching for enthusiastic volunteers who are interested in working in special events, administration, the museum store, and the museum library. SPECIAL EVENTS Volunteers at our special events assist in many areas. These can include working at the registration desk, helping with an art auction, assisting with art handling, selling tickets, assisting artists, and much more. Laguna Art Museum’s special events include the Annual Art Auction, Palette to Palate, the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, Imagination Celebration, and exhibition openings. It’s always a lively and festive environment and perfect for volunteers who are available to work in the evenings or on weekends.

SPOTLIGHT ON

ADMINISTRATION Laguna Art Museum is looking for volunteers to assist its administrative staff. Administration volunteer responsibilities are primarily clerical and include filing, assisting with mailings, computer data entry, etc. This volunteer position is ideal for a high school student who needs to fulfill community service hours for graduation. MUSEUM STORE Volunteering in the museum store is a great way to give back to the community. Volunteers have the chance to learn more about the artistic legacy of Laguna Beach, gain valuable retail experience, and develop customer service skills. MUSEUM LIBRARY The Carole Reynolds Art Research Library, which houses one of the largest collections of California art books, is looking for computer-literate volunteers to help out on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. This volunteer opportunity is suitable for those interested in California art history, research, and archiving. THANK YOU! Laguna Art Museum would like to extend a very special thank you to all of its extraordinary volunteers. The museum is very fortunate to have your involvement, and realizes that you have done much work and organization to help ensure the success of Laguna Art Museum. Thank you so much for your significant contributions. If you are interested in volunteering at Laguna Art Museum, please contact Director of Special Events Sarah Strozza at sstrozza@lagunaartmuseum.org or 949.494.8971 x219.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR LINDY NARVER In September 2011, volunteer Lindy Narver was named Laguna Art Museum’s Volunteer of the Year. Ms. Narver has assisted with the Carole Reynolds Art Research Library almost every Tuesday since 2003 and has worked with Curator of Collections Janet Blake on various curatorial and archiving projects over the past year. The largest project that Ms. Narver assisted with was the cataloguing of the museum library using Ez-Cat and World Cat, which allow individuals to search the library online via the museum’s website. “It has been a privilege to work in both the museum’s library and archives. To be honored as Volunteer of the Year makes it even more special in a long career spent in the arts,” said Ms. Narver. Ms. Narver holds a BA in art history and an MA in critical studies and film theory from USC. She holds a master’s in library science from the University of Colorado, Denver. Besides having worked as a librarian for many years, Lindy has worked as a slide archivist at the University of Illinois in Chicago. When Lindy is not helping at Laguna Art Museum, she works at the Mission Viejo Public Library. She has also worked at the Huntington Library and Gardens, the Beverly Hills Public Library, the South Pasadena Public Library, California State University, Northridge, and also with collector Gerald Buck. Laguna Art Museum would like to congratulate Ms. Narver on her award and thank her for all of her tireless work, assistance, and dedication to the museum, its archives, and its library. Technology MUSEUM UTILIZES IRVINE FOUNDATION GRANT TO INTEGRATE NEW TECHNOLOGY NEW DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM In October 2011, Laguna Art Museum launched a new database management system by Blackbaud called Altru. This system is a better, more efficient way to schedule and sell programs, cultivate supporters, manage earned and contributed revenue, and allow easier access to information by the staff. The museum has been investigating new donor database and ticketing systems for the past few years, and with the help of its 2009 Arts Regional Initiative grant from the James Irvine Foundation, the museum was able to make the switch to Altru. The museum is in an exciting position as an early adopter of this new software and looks forward to the positive effects of improving customer relations management and streamlining processes for staff across all departments. NEW MOBILE WEBSITE In June 2011, Laguna Art Museum launched its new mobile website, designed by mobile website company MobiManage, with funds from the James Irvine Foundation grant. With more than 30 percent of Internet traffic taking place on mobile devices, the museum recognized the need for a mobile website to better serve its supporters and to promote the museum’s exhibitions and events in a mobile-friendly layout. This new layout also hosts the museum’s exhibition audio tours via YouTube.com and the Internet, so museum patrons no longer have to download a 30+MB audio tour app onto their phones. This new audio tour system allows all smartphone users to access engaging information about the art and artists featured in the museum’s exhibitions via the Internet. Patrons without smartphones can access the museum’s new mobile website and audio tours through a free iPod Touch rental at the museum’s front desk.
