Element 1. a component or constituent of a whole. 2. chemistry: one of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.
FOREWORD
From the days I was working as a pharmacist in the lab to the last few years learning about design, I have realized that it all comes down to elements. We start the day empty-handed and it is up to us to decide what we will mix and experiment with in order to find solutions, to create a useful and exciting new whole. The elements we begin with are basic, but the complexity and possibilities of our work are endless and boundless. The projects in this book summarize my experience with some of my favorite elements. I hope you enjoy it. Go out and experiment!

After Dark are evenings for adults that take place at the Exploratorium in San Francisco once a month and center on a different scientific subject each time. My design focuses on three consecutive events which had the themes of Fog, Tinker, and Transform. In order to highlight the nightlife and the exploration and interactive part of the event, I decided to juxtapose cocktails and a scientific element representing the night's main focus.

APPROACH

Nöff is a fictional Music Festival that features performances by post-punk revival bands such as The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, and Interpol. Since human rights are being violated everyday all over the globe, I wanted the festival to raise awareness and benefit organizations that are fighting for human rights. To depict this, I chose a red and black palette using stripes over people and concert scenes, as a metaphor of their rights being constricted. The repetition of the bars and they variations in length also serve to create rhythm.

Bayer is known as a pharmaceutical company, but they also have a Crop and New Materials Division, and their slogan is “Science for a Better Life. Since their strength is innovation, I envision the new look of the brand as fresh and approachable, but still maintaining the structure and confidence that this German company has built throughout the years. The logo is inspired by the shape of the benzene compound and a heart representing health. I used the triangle shape in the center of the logo as a design element that is flexible and allows for multiple variations to adapt to as many applications as necessary.

Booklet Posters
For this project I chose to create a booklet and a series of posters for Chupa Chups, a pioneer lollipop brand from Spain that was founded in the 50s. Taking into consideration Chupa Chups' slogan, “Life less serious, the design celebrates daily adult routines, reinterpreting them in a fresh and fun way in order to bring the audience back to their childhood. I used colorful circles throughout the deliverables to mimic the shape and tastiness of the lollipops. Bright shapes interact in unexpected ways with black and white photographs reminiscent of the past when the company was founded.

The topic I chose was Artificial Intelligence and Singularity. The idea of singularity suggests that at some point in the future there will be a computer that is not only smarter than a human but also more intelligent than humanity’s collective abilities. It is the point where technological advances are happening at such a fast rate that it becomes impossible for humans to understand. I decided to use imagery that is somewhat mysterious and digitalized because we are moving towards the unknown, an era where humans will no longer be the dominant species.

Gratitude 1. readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. INSTRUCTORS
Thank you for your kind words and for your harsh critiques, I've learned so much from them. Most of all, thank you for pushing me to do things I didn't know I was able to do. CLASSMATES
You are the only ones who truly understand the effort and struggles behind all this. Being able to share this experience with you has made all the difference. Thank you for sharing design tips with me, for your friendship and your advice. See you in the real world! FRIENDS
To the ones I left in Catalunya and the new ones I made in California, thank you for always supporting and taking care of me, in spite of the distance or me being missing for weeks at a time working on school projects. GrĂ cies per estar sempre al meu costat, vosaltres em doneu coratge per tirar endevant! FAMILY
Thank you for always supporting and believing in me, especially my parents and grandparents for being my biggest fans. This pushes me to give my best every day. Em sento molt afortunada de tenir-vos. Sou Ăşnics! EDGAR
You have held my hand through this bumpy journey. You helped me find my strength and let me borrow yours when I most needed it. Thank you for being there in every possible way, for keeping me sane through many sleepless nights, for putting your fingers at risk with an X-acto knife, and for leaving me encouraging notes on the mirror. Your love and support mean the world to me. T'estimo.
