I have been living in Hong Kong for the past twenty-two year. This city is a commercial world whereby most people would describe it as a cultural dessert. Most projects are money driven and quite often the input of an architect is not even required. As long as you can provide a maximum profit return, developers are not bothered about the cityscape or the poor living condition of the poor. I strongly believe that we should be aiming to achieve a minimum standard of living even for all walks of life. With this in mind, I aspire to improve the living conditions of the general public, and I hope to achieve this through architecture.

KASIMIR MALEVICH BACKGROUND Hong Kong Institute Of Vocational Education (IVE) is planning to invite Kasimir Malevich to be resident lecturer at the Tsing Yi campus, to deliver lectures, organize seminars, workshops and educational events to students from the Department of Arts. The mode of teaching will adopt an interactive approach in a more relaxed yet intimate atmosphere. To provide a suitable accommodation for Malevich to live and work in, a new development in the form at a small detached house with studio space will be built at the existing Fok Ying Tung Hall of Residence site. SITE The existing Fok Ying Tung Hall of Residence will be demolished to build the new Lecturer’s Residence and Office. Within the boundary of the existing Hall of Residence, whilst the entire site is dedicated for the purpose, a 600sqm lot will be allocated for the new building. Considering the impact to the environment, the campus management has decided the new residence will only be 1-storey high with an approximate GFA of 400sqm.

WHY LINES ? An investigation of Malevich’s paintings revealed elements of movement, flow, composition, and colors. Balance and tension points were discovered during this process that informed the locations of certain spatial experiences. Many stages of sketching followed, producing layouts of flow, event spaces, and atmospheric conditions. These various studies produced a preliminary 3D massing model, a final model that incorporated all aspects of investigation and representation of approach, entry, passage, and place was created

Each roof and wall of the studio were abstractly generated from the 2D lines drawing of the site environment with their own meanings and characters.

These line drawing inspired by Malevich’s paintings became the blue plan for the studio. The curved lines generates the walls and roof. Each line represented a different individuality, that presents the movement & flow of the planes in the paintings.

The curves were translated into straight lines. This is because straight edged geometric shapes were use more in Malevich drawings. Also it is more practical for a living area constructed in a limited space. Directions are present easier with straight lines as well.
Inside the house, it is split into four individual major zones, lecturing area, working area, living area and family area, that are physically linked together. These are based on the needs of the end-user as studied. The public and private space are separated clearly to cater to different activities.

The lecturing area is designed to face the IVE campus to signify a sense of affliation to the academy and students. The library & working area is designed for student’s access and is close to the lecturing area to promote better student-professor relations. The living and family area are separated by a foyer, to create extra privacy.

My goal was not only to design a studio for living and work but also a retreat. It is designed to be a welcoming space that, upon arrival, makes the user want to stay. It is designed to provide an interesting and suitable spatial experience. I wanted to create the effect of constant motion for this architecture. I used unusual trapezoid walls to create the feel of movement, The slicing roof will create a sense of explosion; but above all it is to provide a better interior space for the end users. The extra-thick walls provide a safety feeling inside, they are detach from the slabs, The gaps will allow rain to fall in and sunshine to be caught and reflected into house, creating the element of nature inside a man-made structure. The purpose is to connect artificial with nature, breaking the separation of walls and open up the physically closed space.

IVE BOARDING STUDENTS BACKGROUND This project was a continued effort from Malevich’s studio initiated by the Campus. The new section is a small village for the School of Design, with accommodation for boarding students. For this Hall of residence, the concept of projective lines is continued from the Studio & Residence project, designed to guide the directions to the artist studio, and generated separated spaces and zones. SITE An extension from Malevich’s living studios, the boarding village will be a group of two-story buildings. The low story structure is designed to blend in with the environment and not change its silhouette. Previously with a road running along the upper edge of the site, a curved road will be constructed for better allocation of space and togetherness of both projects.

The use of lines in this project is a development of the idea behind Malevich’s studio. A point was stragetically selected as the source of extension of lines, and it is chosen with consideration to its coordinates and the point of view from there. There are two additional points from which lines are extended from, and therefore translated into the numerous stuctures that caters to the whole boarding student body. Each building is created for a separate purpose and is then grouped into three zones.

For a good development of student’s life, not only a living and studying space are needed, but also entertainment and recreation areas. There are three zones creating, for the purposes of Living, Studying and Relaxing. CITY CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY, HK (CCDC) BACKGROUND This is a architectural design project completed with interior planning, landscape design, structure and building service system. From a previous project, I experienced the complicated context of Mongkok and had been well aware of the difficulties in design and planning a public building with multi-users in such a dense urban context. This project is located on Mangkok, a busy place of Hong Kong. A Contemporary Dance School & Theatre for Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company is designed, and will be used to provide advancement and development of youth. The location of this building will also encourage youth to contribute to the local community. SITE This is built on a site to be redeveloped and is currently located at the existing Macpherson Playground bounded by Sai Yee Street, Shantung Street, Nelson Street and Yim Po Street.

City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) is a professional company pioneering in contemporary dance of Hong Kong. CCDC has inspired and elated audiences in Hong Kong and around the world with superb modern dance performances. Collaborating with the best and brightest artists from other media, the company deserves popular and critical acclaim, reflects the vigour and creativity of Hong Kong’s vibrant at the same time.
As an agency for dance education, CCDC organises the most comprehensive education and outreach programmes, with an emphasis on the long-term dance development in Hong Kong and mainland China. They inspire and train young generation, promote creative and well-rounded dance courses in schools, embracing the importance of youth growth and competent education.
MONG KOK Mong Kok is an area in the Yau Tsim Mong District on Kowloon West, Hong Kong. The district is characterized by a mixture of old and new multi-story buildings, with shops and restaurants at street level and commercial or residential units above. Major industries in Mong Kok are retail, restaurants and entertainment. With its extremely high population density of 130,000 person per km2 or 340,000 person per mi2, Mongkok was described as the busiest district in the world. 034

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Modern Dance generates wayward movement away from traditional Ballet; This mode of dance does not progress far as expected, sometimes move backward; Contemporary Dance picks some basic features from Ballet; Contemporary Dance breakout their own to generate a new style incorporating nature, human gesture, emotion and other style of dance for its self evolution; Looking forward to future development; No restrictions or limitations for their development; Audience may not entirely aware of the dancer’s motive through their movement. * “classical ballet dancer ”
APPLICATION OF FORM A cylinder is placed inside a cube; The cylinder represents Contemporary Dance whilst the cube stands for classical dance; The philosophy behind the forms is that the formation of Contemporary Dance is due to its refusal to compromise with the principles of Ballet

PRELIMINARY DESIGN The fundamental form of the design is created into two main parts - cube and basement. With the cube as the upper part, a twisted cylinder is covered by the facade revolves a centre axes, showing the intrinsic value of a contemporary dancer and illustrating the difference between a classical and contemporary dancer. With the basement as the lower part, it is lifted up to allow the public to enter the world and heart of a contemporary dancer.
UNDER THE MASK The cube is built under the mask to form a voided area providing a stage for dancers to expose themselves externally. The mask revolves to present a highly varied dance form and the building appears in this exterior. Dancer’s inner world is wholly enclosed in the 4-faced solid cube. 038

SUPPORTING The excavated basement increases structural difficulty as the force of heavy tower cannot transfer downward directly. Equally, the lifted up ground, which resists gravitational force, needs a huge and thick transfer plate to balance the heavy loading of the tower.

TOWER STRUCTURE (structure of a contemporary dancer) Core of the structure represents fundamental dance form of contemporary dance, Ballet, It controls and dominants the free and unique movement of the metal mega frame. The mega frame, which takes the most loading, is the major structure of the tower, whereas the core serves a supporting role. Such the ballet technique supports the contemporary dancer technically.

In this project, the architecture is considered as a contemporary dancer. The thought and soul of a dancer is fulfilled into the design. The purpose of the school is built for a group of youth and dancer, compared to the surroundings, the prominent and outstanding design naturally becomes the landmark for the designated district and gives a brighten stage for the dancers to show off.

It is highly used not only in logistic industry, but human living as well. Two 20-feet general purpose containers are using in this project to build a house. The containers should be kept as original form, without anything structural distortion. The basic living spaces are provided.

WHY CONTAINERS? Shipping containers are ideal building materials in many ways. They are strong, durable and therefore they are designed to carry heavy loads and to be stacked in high columns. They are also designed to resist harsh environments.
SIDEWALL
All shipping containers are in the same width and most of them have standard height and length measurements. They provide modular elements that can be combined into larger structures. Moreover, it is sustainable and cheap. By reusing and repurposing the surplus containers we can give a new life to a product that would otherwise be scrapped or just sit idle. Valuable lumber resources are saved for future generations.

CONCEPT Quartet is a musical composition or piece for four difference performers. The instruments here are four different spaces that are created by two containers. The spaces are connected by the activities of users with path surrounded. They are enjoying the spaces inside.
SPACE Living and resting areas within connected by a bathroom are two major spaces. Living area is designed in the first container, whereas resting area and toilet are designed in second container. Due to the fact that most users spend more time in living area, the living are is designed in higher level to gain better view. Moreover a roof garden will be built on top of the second container connects to the living area. Space below the first container is excavated to create a basement serving as a garage or another purpose.

We understood human interaction can highly link containers together. We improve our design under our main concept, we combining two-separated object together. Base on it, we deeply conceder the communication between different zones and spaces of the containers. We would like to link different zones and spaces with different elements. SITE The village is planned to build on an existing basketball court in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong. The site is very small and flat area, surrounded by trees. Although the site is located in the corner site, but luckily it is not a busy road, air and sound pollutions are not the serious problems. The best view of the site is right on the south side, there is a container terminal, which is far from the site, it will be an interesting view from the container houses.

LAYOUT This is corner site, which is very close to the main roads nearby, luckily there are many trees surrounded; we preserve over ninety percent of existing trees, aim to have a barrier to the rod and provide a better living condition for each container houses. The site is split into three zones, each has their own public area for activities, forming group of community. This helps attaching people to stay and communicate with their neighbors. For the views, we plan all container houses face to a same direction, for obtaining the best view for each house.

WHY ALTERNATIVE HOUSE DESIGN? After the study of site condition, we found the previous container house is not too suitable in this case, which is lower profile and occupied many floor areas, therefore we plan to design a new container house. It should be occupied less space and higher profile in order to increase the public space between the houses, which is aim to encourage the communication between the neighbors. The target users will be new married couples or families within three persons. For the new interior planning, we reorganized all the spaces. In the lower container, there are main entrance, kitchen, washroom, second/guest bedroom and main corridor to the upper container. Then the upper container is serviced as the function room and bedroom.

CONCEPT We say it to be duet, which is a musical composition or piece for two performers. The containers are the performers; two performers a playing their significant instrument of dormitory (living room, kitchen) to play the same music, the zones, and spaces. The audiences are the users, what they do is to enjoy the spaces. In our design, we link up the different zone through human activities by stair and we deeply consider about the container’s user activities. SPACE The container house is deigned to more suitable for a small family. We have concluded that a human path for arriving home in normal daily life, as the user back, who can having bath or meal in the lower container, then they may going up to upper container, doing activities or having rest, and actually the users are spending more time in doing activities and having rest, therefore the small bedroom kitchen and toilet planed in the lower container, aim to have a bigger resting area and bedroom, between is a folding partition to separate both area, if it is opened, there will be a large space for user’s activities, and the spaces and connected to three balconies. * “top view of first floor”- duet house

IVE STUDENTS & TEACHERS BACKGROUND A 10x10x10metre cube viewing platform is designed and built in the campus of Institute Vocational Education in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong. SITE The site is on the backyard of the main tower, where without any landscaping facilities, there are only number of small trees planted randomly and a road nearby. Therefore the viewing platform and the path connecting form the campus to the viewing platform is considered as a part of the view.

CUBE For this reason, I try to make it feels as a sculpture-like viewing platform. For the design of the cube, I use four-continuous line to present a cube, which is inspired by the bended stainless steel frame of the Wassily Chair. Each continuous solid line forms the minimum number of corners and edges; all these cubes inside are smaller than the outer one, with same principle. Only the third line is made longer to form the platform. PATH The path is excavated, let the people can view the cube from the lower angle when walk out the door of the tower, the rock-shape wall is slightly blind the view from the path. And some trees area planted around the site aim to make good for the environment.
