Please join us for this fun filled gala that will be an unforgettable evening of dinning, drinking and music! For Israel and Danielle Paskowitz (founders of Surfer’s Healing Organization) surfing was and still is “therapy” they couldn’t find elsewhere. After noticing that the ocean was the one place where their son Isaiah (diagnosed with autism at the age of three) could relieve the sensory overload that most kids with autism suffer from.
When most people hear the word “therapy” they think about doctors and clinics, but for this couple the therapy they needed was found in the ocean. This is how Surfer’s Healing, a nonprofit organization, came to be. Today, the organization devotes all its efforts to exposing kids with autism to one of the most wonderful experiences in the world, Surfing.

BREVES MANGO ME CRAZY!!! ...also the most widely consumed fresh fruit in the world: this delicious fruit has been cultivated for over 6,000 years and comes in 50 different varieties...
Elizabeth PrzygodaMontgomery As you drive the streets of Puerto Rico, in the next few months, you will see loads of yellowy/orangey colored fruit that cover the trees and unfortunately the sidewalks. These fruits are Mangos! After this article, I hope to see you pulling over your cars and filling your baskets with these ample fruits that surround us here on the island. Eating locally and seasonally seems to be the newest rage, although, natives from this island have been doing this for centuries. Mangos can be purchased on every corner from local street vendors or at the closest supermarket, although when buying from your retail supermarket I can’t guarantee that you will be eating local, since most of the fruit at the supermarkets is imported. So to ensure you are getting local fruit, support your local street vendor or farmers market (see pg 35). Mango trees are deep rooted, symmetrical evergreens that can reach heights of 90 feet and can produce fruit for up to 40 years. Originally, native to Asia and India, mangos are also the most widely consumed fresh www.laislareader.com | 10
fruit in the world; this delicious fruit has been cultivated for over 6,000 years and comes in 50 different varieties ranging in colors from bright yellow to deep purple. High in vitamin A and C, low in fat and having less than 90 calories per mango. It is the perfect local snack. When choosing your Mangos they should yield to gentle pressure when touched, show no signs of dark spots or blemishes. Use your nose; a ripe mango will have a fragrant smell. Mangos that are still a little hard can be placed in a brown bag for a couple days to ripen. Have you ever felt itchy after eating a mango? I have this experience where my lips get bumpy and swollen, each time after I prepare and eat mangos. This effect is something my husband likes to call “ Mango Lips,” a name that is endearing but also had me curious. Was I allergic to mango? Most people experience some signs of allegoric reaction when eating or preparing mango. Why is this you ask?
Mango is a member of the Anachardiaceae Family, which includes poison Ivy, cashews and pistachios. I wasn’t allergic to mango, but I was reacting to Urushiol. Urushiol is found in the sap of the mango skin. It causes a rash the same way poison Ivy would, they both contain Urushiol. The sap is in the skin, so to avoid what I like to call “Mango Lips”, Do not eat skin Do not scrape the fruit off the skin Avoid mango pulp near the skin Go to www.laislareader.com for a delicious Puerto Rican Mangoes Foster recipe by Elizabeth. .................................................
35). ...sigue proxima pagina >>>>>

MANGO MY CRAZY!

RESTAURANTE PROFILE by Sau Seige PACO’S MEXICAN CHURRASQUERIA CANTINA Pueblo de Isabela 787-904-6618
Nothing makes a place come alive like a good restaurant and tucked away in the pueblo of Isabela is our newest Mexican eatery, named Paco’s. This well decorated laid back Cantina, with it’s delicious food, drinks, and friendly service makes you feel at home the second you enter. The food is wonderful, being a fan of Chef Ivan’s for years, I know the guy has skills and he’s showing them off by not just cooking the usual Mexican fare, but adding fresh fish, steak, salads, and a chocolate crème brulee that I almost lost my fingers trying to get the last bite of. The chips are hot and fresh, the pico de gallo is addictive, and the Mar-
garitas are large and tasty. The prices are more than reasonable, actually I would say for the quality of the food it is one of the best deals in town, and I’m not the only one who knows it, judging by the waiting line out the door. One of my favorite things about the restaurant is it’s local feel. What I mean by that is going out to eat is a social event and eating here is more than just good food and drink, it’s a chance to see friends you haven’t seen in a while and a place to meet new ones. Paco’s is a fun spot and shows what Puerto Rico is about. I don’t know who Paco is, but he should be proud to have this place as his namesake. So, if you are spending some time strolling through the pueblo of Isabela and you pass somebody with a full belly and a great Big smile on their face they are most likely coming from Paco’s.

View of “Dreamland” from the street. This abandoned warehouse is used by many different local artists from Aguadilla and the westcoast of Puerto rico.
A Halloween inspired mural on the outside of “Dreamland” done as a collaboration with several street artists working on the same mural.
Alexa (“Allie”) stands in front of her mural of a bird, outside of Dreamland. One of the few female street artists, “Allie’s” work is unique and has a softer more ethereal quality to it. Representing women street artists is something that pushes her to continue taking her work to the next level.

If you drive around the neighborhood between the Aguadilla airport and Ramey Base, you may have noticed a large warehouse covered with an intensity of graffiti art. Perhaps, you stopped for a moment to marvel at the size and scope of the murals that cover this edifice. But what most people don’t realize is that this is one of the most influential and dynamic arts institutes in western Puerto Rico. Inside is a 12,000 square foot gallery of new art by over 50 different local and international artists, a museum preserving famous works by past artists, and an arts school which trains young painters (for free) in technique, style, perspective, and color. This “institute” is known to the island arts community simply as “Dreamland”; and it is illegal.

“Flavor” posing with his cans of spray paint in front of the mural “War73”
T H E O R I G I N O F D R E A M L A N D Graffiti street art has been active in Puerto Rico since the 1970’s, but the story of Dreamland really begins in 1988. That year, a local high school sophomore was kicked out of school for graffiti bombing his high school racquetball court. He never returned to school, but he did learn a valuable lesson on the difference between art and vandalism, and grew to become one of western Puerto Rico’s most accomplished and prolific street artists. His street-art name is “Flavor.” In the late 90’s, the mayor’s office created a program called APA “Artistas por Aguadilla” and Flavor and other graffiti artists, including his friends O-Rez and Hell9, were given permission and materials to create positive murals on designated public walls to beautify the city, training young artists as they went. According to Flavor and his crew, the mayor withdrew support for the APA project in 2002 and he had city workers paint over all the murals that they had created. They continued their mural work “underground” and without government sanction. They knew that they would have to pay for their own materials and www.laislareader.com | 32
that their work would be systematically destroyed at every corner, but for them it was worth it. They tried hard to find public places that met their criteria: not privately-owned, appropriate location and lighting for displaying a major work, and yet secluded enough to work without attracting the local authorities. In 2004, they wandered into an abandoned warehouse near the airport. Flavor pushed open one of the sliding ware-
house doors and was overwhelmed with what he saw: a monumental, publiclyowned (yet abandoned) open air space with over 7,000 square feet of pristine white walls ready for painting. After a moment of silence, he turned to his friends and said, “This is a dreamland!” The name has stuck ever since.
D r e a m l a n d
T o d a y
Today, Dreamland holds the work of over 50 Puerto Rican “street artists” and muralists, as well as artists from New York, Miami, and South America.
If you go to Dreamland on any given weekend, you will see a cadre of young art students, just as you would see at any other art school, with their black bound sketch books and packs of colored pencils, working on new designs and getting advice from their mentors. The older artists, such as O-Rez or Hell9, are busy preparing wall space for a new mural, answering questions from the kids, while the deep thumping bass of hip-hop echoes from car speakers. These “students” hold their elders in awe. “Do you know Basquiat?” a young man asked me. “Yes.” “Flavor is our Basquiat!” Other students reverently refer to him as “King Flavor” and they all agree that he is their mentor and patron. The work on display in Dreamland is vibrant and dynamic, it is considered one of the best collections of the “West Side Style” of street art in existence, a style noted for the intricacy of design and dimensionality of its abstract lettering. For many young artists, Dreamland and its collective are the best hope they have for realizing a life-long career as professional artists. By his own count, Flavor estimates that, over the years, their work has helped over 100 kids go from street vandals and potential drug dealers to working artists. As Flavor said to me, “When you have poor kids with no education and no prospects, what are they going to do? Let’s give them some paint and SEE what they can do.” Dreamland is currently in open exhibition next to the Froebel School, 24 hours a day and seven days per week. The artists’ collective that creates and manages Dreamland, sincerely hopes that you stop and see their work. (That is until the authorities shut it down.) For the full collection of photos, videos of interviews with Flavor and “the crew’, or to ask questions of the writer, photographer or artists; please visit “Dreamland Gallery” on Facebook.
!Bienvenidos a Dreamland!

In the Artistic world of

The diverse scenarios of Isabela inspire many. Including artists who have been drawn to move from different parts of the island to nourish themselves from the energy the air exudes. through their art. His works of art translate the concerns of the artists. The sudden change in his life when he moved from Isabela to San Juan impacted him in such a way that the theme of this compositions now revolve around the social issues that are common scenarios in the urban city centers of the metropolitan area, such as social outcasts, homelessness, and drug addiction. The artists’ shapes these realities through different means, although he favors engraving, which he has perfected.

The marks on his skin honor Puerto Rico’s political liberation heroes: Hostos, Betances and Alibizu. His lyrics awaken the listener, bringing attention to social and imperial problems, primarily racism and his indisputable love for the freedom of his homeland. Born in 1979 in Villa Palmera, Santurce, to Dominican parents, he feels first hand the effect of racism at an early age, circumstances that would later influence his greatest musical successes. In 1989, while listening to a cassette tape given to him by a cousin he discovers, for the first time in his life, the person that undoubtedly influenced the beginning of his Spanish rap career, Vico-C. From that moment on he starts rapping in Spanish on a small scale- at school and with friends; writing rhymes and verses with the central theme being that of an absent-minded adolescence, typical of the age, essentially ensuring the rhyme matched the beat. At the age of 16, a rebellious teenager emerges; and he drops out of High School, triggering the street stage of his life, filled with rough experiences, which rouse his love of social rhymes. In 1997, he meets Luis Diaz, a teacher by profession and political activist who becomes his greatest influence in terms of the Puerto Rican political liberation struggles. His time invested in Luis and a documentary that accidentally fell into his hands of WIPR Channel 6, about the Ponce massacres, eminently awaken the desire for his lyrics to have a clear message; the decolonization of Puerto Rico and the independence of the island. In 1997, along side Luis Diaz,
Noah Santiago and Yallzee en el beat a group known as Conciencia Poética (Poetic Consciousness), and create a record entitled, Democracia Usada (Used Democaracy). Thereby making them one of the pioneering musical ensembles of politically charged independent Spanish rap on the island. In 2001, maestro William Cepeda discovers SieteNueve and they collaborate on Cepeda’s Afro-Rican Jazz project. The project combines his Spanish rap lyrics and the ingenious folklore music of William Cepeda. In 2003, Siete-Nueve launches his first record production entitled, El Progreso (The Progress), which sets him off on an international tour to countries like Venezuela, Mexico, Dominican Republic and the Untied States. The release of his first record propels him to collaborate with great local bands such as Cultura Profética, Gomba Jahbari, Bayanga, David Sánchez and Jerry Medina. In 2007, he releases his second record production, with Nuff Ced’s beat entitled, El Trabuco (The Tongue Twister), with lyrics that directly align with his ideals. This album defines him as one of the greatest authors on the subject of sociopolitical protest. Siete-Nueve has performed on paramount stages such as Carnegie Hall, Centro de Bellas Artes, the Amphitheater, Lincoln Center and La Respuesta in Santurce. In 2009, with the song entitled, Quédate Callao (Stay Quiet) he creates a huge controversy along side rapper Daddy Yankee. He has written powerful songs and poems such as Tierra Negra (Black Earth) and Los Ancestros (The Ancestors) as well as Operas like, De Mi Sol (From My Sun). Siete-Nueve is currently producing his next album entitled, Numerología (Numerology), which like all his others, have been completely independent produced. www.laislareader.com | 43

ESCUELA MICAEL A feeling of peace comes over me as I enter Micael School; the walls are filled with children’s harmoniously colored paintings, the sweet smell of fresh bread in the oven, a soft hand bell rings and the children change their focus to the next task at hand. The teachers movements are fluid and calm, smiling and exuding positive energy. Rain jackets and boots outline a far wall just waiting for the rain- children to grab them and run outside. Toys made from wood and colorful cloth accompany musical instruments. Now, this is a place I feel my child can cultivate his potential, his Self as a whole... Wa l d o r f E d u c a t i o n fo s t e r s r e s p o n s i b i l i t y, independence and life long love of learning. Although, every Waldorf School is independent, all share a core of curriculum, methods and beliefs, including the idea that a fulfilled and creative life involves considerably more than mental development or the ability to earn a living. Important as these things are, every child also needs the balance provided by strong and healthy development in the life of will (the ability to get things done) and in the life of feeling (emotions, aesthetics, social sensitivity). In a Waldorf School competence is stressed, as every child is taught they can be an artist, a scientist, a writer, a gardener, a carpenter, a mathematician or all of the above. This method of education strives to awaken and ennoble human capabilities, rather than to merely impose intellectual content on the child. Learning becomes much more than the acquisition of quantities of information… learning becomes an engaging voyage of discovery of the world, and of oneself. By seeking to educate children in a unique way using an approach that doesn’t rely on systemized teaching and standardized testing, they instead employ a living curriculum that promotes intellectual thinking and self-expression. promotes independence; parents can stay if child needs them. Preschool (3 - 4 yrs): 3 ½ hours, five days a week. Focuses on developing social skills guided by the teacher, as well as developing gross and fine motor skills, language (English and Spanish possibly German soon too!), the ability to listen and self control among others. Kindergarten (4 ½ - 6 yrs): 3 ½ hours, five days a week. Mixed ages allows older children to model games and other activities for the younger children. Continuation of preschool program with more complex activities that focus on establishing the basis for the childs academic future. Extended Study (Preschool and Kindergarten): 5 ½ hours, five days a week. Children have lunch together (brought from home), story time, singing, nap, art, manual work, yoga, music, snack and free play.
