BALLENAS JOROBADAS
L
Las Ballenas Jorobadas son los gigantes que migran a través del océano. En Puerto Rico podemos verlos en su ruta migratoria hacia el Atlántico del Norte donde el agua es más cómoda para pasar los meses de verano. Estos tiernos gigantes pueden crecer hasta más de cincuenta pies y pesar hasta cincuenta toneladas. Se alimentan simplemente de pequeños peces, crustáceos y plancton. Tienen una capacidad magnifica de zambullirse en el agua aproximadamente setecientos metros para alimentarse es una habilidad única. Otro aspecto interesante es que los machos cantan una canción especifica para su bebé recién nacido, ninguna canción es igual al otro. Desafortunadamente, sólo existen quince mil Ballenas Jorobadas en el océano, así que no es muy común verlas y la oportunidad de ver estos mamíferos gigantescos apacibles es un momento realmente especial. Humpback Whales are the migratory giants of the sea. In Puerto Rico you can catch them on their route to the North Atlantic where the waters is much more comfortable during the summer months. These gentle giants can grow to more than fifty feet in length and weigh in at an incredible fifty tons. These magnificent, blue giants feed only on small fish, crustaceans and plankton; their magnificent ability to dive down to approximately seven hundred meters to feed is a unique ability. Another amazing attribute is that the male whales sing a unique song to each of their offspring; no song is alike! With merely fifteen thousand Humpback Whales in our oceans it is not very common to spot them, but when you do get to see one of these peaceful, magnificent giants it is truly a special moment. If you visit the northwest region of the island, from the months of January though late March, you have a very good chance of seeing these amazing ocean creatures; this is during their mating and birthing season. All you need to do is stop and relax on one of our

Puedes ver las ballenas desde la orilla de la playa o mejor todavía es ir en barco. También puedes contactar agencias de buceo que ofrecen la oportunidad de no sólo ver desde la playa o un bote sino nadar con estos gigantes del océano, siempre y cuando seas un buceador experimentado.

You can see the whales diving, dancing, singing, playing, and splashing in the Caribbean waters from the shoreline of any of the towns facing the Mona Passage including, Isabela, Aguadilla, Aguada, and Rincon. The Lighthouse in Rincon is famous for whale watching since it sticks out furthest to the west and faces the Mona Passage. If you want to get closer, you can charter a boat and if you want to get even closer and you are an experienced scuba diver, there are many scuba diving agencies that can take you swimming near these gentle giants of the sea.

Whether it’s giving cooking classes or planning a local cleanup project, the couple who owns One-Ten-Thai is a great example of what people and community should be and this shines through in their restaurant. It all started in a tiny kitchen in their home. Within a few weekends, it was obvious that they were onto something. After some serious searching, they found a spot on Road (Carr.) 110 and used their magic to turn it into an intimate, groovy, well thought out space. When I’m there, I can’t help the feeling of being in one of those New York restaurants that are always being wonderfully critiqued in the food magazines. Using local, fresh, organic products is a current trend, and of course, these guys are on it. A native of San Juan, Ms. Hopkins is the consummate musician, having excelled as pianist, composer, arranger, improviser, band leader, writer and educator. She holds a Bachelor degree in Classical Piano from the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico, a Masters degree in Contemporary Improvisation from New England Conservatory in Boston, and completed Doctoral studies in Musicology from the Universidad de Granada in Spain. From 2003-2006 she was appointed Director of the Music Program of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture.
Nativa de San Juan, la Srta. Hopkins es la artista consumada, sobre saliendo como pianista, compositora, coordinadora, improvisadora, líder de grupo musical, escritora y educadora. Tiene un titulo de bachiller en Piano Clásico del Conservatorio de Música en Puerto Rico, Maestría de Improvisación Contemporáneo del New England Conservatory de Boston y completó estudios Doctorales en Musicología de la Universidad de Granada en España. Del 2003 al 2006 fue nombrada Directora del Programa de Música en el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. Sus dos años de estudios en Granada culminó con la producción y composición de toda la música en “Recuerdos de Granada/Memoirs of Granda.” Al regresar, acompañada por un respaldo de artistas excelentes, la grabación fue completada en San Juan en junio del 2009. Extrayendo de su experiencia como pianista para una compañía de danza flamenco, ella ofrece una perspectiva única juntada con un conocimiento extenso de la improvisación del jazz, estos se integran precisamente para ofrecer al oyente una aventura cultural imaginativa. Hay un concepto Español definido en el disco empezando con la canción de la abertura “Miranda,” hasta “Flamenco Borincano,” este concepto continua en las baladas más suaves y los números con el sabor de jazz. Ella tiene un acercamiento particular asombroso en su repertorio, lo cual permite que ella se realice con autoridad. Sus años en la escena de la música latinoamericana afilaron sus habilidades en cuanto a ritmos intrincados y arreglos complejos, y ella los emplea con gran tacto y precisión. La Srta. Hopkins es una pianista deslumbrante, mostrando su virtuosismo técnico en una variedad de ajustes y tempos pues las canciones interconectan perfectamente. Ella nos lleva en un (trayecto/recorrido) trascendental a Granada, y realmente es todo un viaje.
ith the release of her record “Recuerdos de Granada/Memoirs of Granada,” Puerto Rican pianist Brenda Hopkins Miranda has presented a masterpiece which displays her luminous talent.
Her two years studying in Granada culminated in her composing and producing all the innovative music on “Recuerdos de Granada/Memoirs of Granada.” Upon her return, with excellent supporting musicians, the recording for the album was done in San Juan in June of 2009. Drawing from her experience as a pianist for a flamenco dance troupe, she offers a unique perspective coupled with a vast knowledge of jazz improvisation, blending well to offer the listener an imaginative cultural adventure. There is a defined Spanish concept of the record from the opening song of “Miranda,” through “Flamenco Borincano,” to the softer ballads and jazz flavored numbers. She has a distinctive percussive approach in her repertoire which allows her to perform with authority. Her years on the Latin American music scene honed her skills in dealing with intricate rhythms and complex arrangements, and she employs them all with great tact and precision. Ms. Hopkins is a dazzling pianist, showcasing her technical virtuosity in a variety of settings and tempos as the songs interconnect perfectly. She takes us on a transcendental voyage to Granada, and it is quite a journey.

The B-29 wreck of Aguadilla’s coast… Para el año 1938 las fábricas Boeing y Consolidated desarrollaban sus versiones de bombarderos pesados de larga distancia: XB-29 y el XB32. Estos modelos eran diseñados para volar más de 5,000 millas. Serian los primeros aviones con alcance intercontinental. El Boeing B-29 se conocía como “La Superfortaleza”. Después de 6 años de desarrollo apresurado fue introducido, finalmente, en mayo del 1944. Podía cargar 20,000 libras en bombas a una distancia aproximada de 6,000 millas. Pero el B-29 también tenía muchos problemas. El problema más serio eran sus cuatro poderosos motores, los cuales sobre calentaban provocando escapes de aceite y esto causaba fuegos. Procedimientos rigorosos de mantenimiento y muchas modificaciones fueron ordenadas. No obstante, aún con estos serios problemas, era el mejor bombardero de larga distancia en producción con unos 3,970 construidos. Una milla al noroeste de Punta Borinquén y a 120 pies de profundidad descansan los restos silenciosos de un bombardero B-29 estrellado el 31 de mayo del 1945. Aunque nunca hubo un escuadrón de bombarderos B-29 asignada a Puerto Rico, muchas de sus tripulaciones entrenaron en Borinquén Field para misiones de grandes distancias sobre el agua. Era común que practicaran misiones de “bombardeos” desde Borinquén Field a Baltimore, Maryland y nuevamente de regreso a Borinquén. Esto era lo equivalente a la distancia de ida y vuelta desde la isla de Tinian y Tokio, uno de los objetivos principales de estos “Super-fortalezas”. La base operacional del B-29, que se hundió en las aguas de Puerto Rico, procedía de Pratt, Kansas. Pertenecía al Escuadrón 461 de Bombardeo. En la tarde del 31 de marzo,

By 1938 both Boeing and Consolidated were developing their versions of very heavy, long range bombers: the XB-29 and the XB-32. These models were expected to fly over 5000 miles; these would be the first non-stop, inter-continental aircraft. The Boeing B-29 became known as the “Super fortress” and after 6 years of rushed development was finally introduced in May of 1944. It could carry 20,000 pounds of bombs almost 6000 miles. But it also had its problems. The most serious were the four engines which easily overheated causing oil leakages and fires. Severe maintenance procedures and many modifications were ordered. Still, it was the best long range bomber in service with 3970 being built. One mile to the northwest of Punta Borinquén and 120 feet under the ocean lays the silent remains of a B-29 bomber that ditched there on 31 May 1945. Although there were never any B-29 bomber squadrons assigned to Puerto Rico, B-29 bomber crews did training missions from Borinquén Field over water for great distances. Not uncommon was a practice “bombing” mission from Borinquen to Baltimore and back, the distance round trip from Tinian to Tokyo, which was the main purpose of these “Super fortresses.” The B-29 that sank in Puerto Rico waters was home-based in Pratt, Kansas, one of several from the 461st Bomb Squadron. Shortly after takeoff on the evening of March 31 oil pressure dropped on engines one and two. Pilot Giacomo declared an emergency and Borinquén Field was immediately closed to all other airplanes. Heavy smoke appeared during the return to the field when engine three also failed.
The recently established BORINQUEN FIELD / RAMEY AFB MUSEUM is located on the second floor of Hangar 403 (Cargo Terminal) at the east end of Hangar Road on the former Air Force Base. It is open to the public every Saturday from 9AM to 4PM. There is no fee. The museum is a repository and place of safekeeping for documents, photos, historical items and remembrances of Borinquen Field/Ramey AFB as it existed between 1939 and 1973. It serves also to promote the historical significance as well as to educate the public about the original role and function as a strategic air base during WWII and the important role it played during the height of the Cold War. The museum provides material for research and is an educational center dealing with the history of the base and other projects related to aviation history.

El ultimo mensaje enviado fue “287 abandono.” El “Super-fortaleza” rozó la superficie del agua por unos 400 pies antes de chocar con una ola. El fuselaje se partió y la enorme cola del avión se hundió en menos de un minuto llevándose tres de los tripulantes. El piloto pudo remover e inflar la balsa de salvavidas, el cual salvó aquellos que estaban lastimados debido al aterrizaje forzoso. Solo pasaron minutos cuando la sección de alas también se hundió. Los “crashboats”, botes salvavidas del ejército, llegaron en seguida para rescatar a los diez tripulantes sobrevivientes. Los restos del B-29, 42-65287, son visitados por buzos con la habilidad y entrenamiento para descender a 120 pies.
Giacomo realized that with only one engine and losing altitude fast, the airplane could not rise enough to clear the coastline ridge to land. He called the control tower and declared an emergency water landing. He turned the aircraft into the wind and prepared his crew of 13 for a wheels-up ditching at sea. The last message sent was “287 ditching”. The “Super fortress” skimmed across the surface for about 400 feet before it ploughed into a wave. The fuselage broke off midway at the radar room and the tail section sank in less than a minute carrying off three crew members. The pilot managed to remove and inflate a fiveman life raft which saved those injured in the ditching. Within minutes the wing section also sank. Army crashboats were quickly on the scene to rescue the ten survivors.

Promueve la historia significativa y educa al publico en cual fue el papel y función original de la base como una base aéreo estratégico durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el papel importantísimo que desempeñó durante el punto álgido de la Guerra Fría. El museo provee materiales para investigación y es un centro de educación pertinente a la historia de la base y otros proyectos relacionados con la historia de la aviación.

Cuando entras al salón de color melocotón con sus coloridos vitrales sientes el aroma de pan caliente en el horno y escuchas a los niños jugando. Los niños están construyendo casitas e invitando a sus amigos a que entren a sus hogares con cortinas de seda, cargando canastas con frutas y vegetales de madera. La maestra está mirando atentamente en la distancia, en lo que canta suavemente y teje una cuica para usar afuera. Es hora de recoger; la maestra se para y empieza a doblar una tela, todavía cantando. Un estudiante se acerca a ayudarla mientras los demás acuestan a sus juguetes a dormir hasta el próximo día. Todos ayudan a poner la mesa y se sientan juntos para su comida orgánica vegetariana que cada uno ayudó a hacer. Bendicen la comida, dándole las gracias a la Tierra y el Sol. Los niños disfrutan su comida nutritivo y luego llevan sus platos a la cocina a fregarlos. Vuelven rápidamente al salón para el cuento. La maestra canta y les toca una canción con la arpa, seguido por un cuento de siembra, presentado en teatro de mesa. Todos cantan el verso de despedida y los niños se ponen los zapatos para ir a jugar afuera. Corren en el amplio patio, cubierto de árboles frutales, algunos van a la caja de arena cerca de los árboles de china, otros dando vueltas en los columpios de goma debajo del árbol de mango. Las iguanas se dispersan y los pájaros cantan en la distancia. Esta es la Esuela Micael. La Escuela Micael en Aguadilla provee una educación alternativa
y bilingüe para niños jóvenes en el Noroeste de Puerto Rico. La escuela, basada en el movimiento pedagógico de mayor crecimiento a nivel mundial: educación Waldorf o de Rudolf Steiner, ofrece un currículo creativo y balanceado que integra la naturaleza, las artes y el juego libre para niños y niñas de 3 a 4 años, a nivel preescolar. La pedagogía Waldorf provee un currículo detallado y artístico que responde y enriquece cada fase del desarrollo del niño. Cultiva la inteligencia emocional y social, a la misma vez conectando a los niños con la naturaleza. La Escuela Micael fue fundada por Gustavo Halley y Larisa Molinari. La escuela abrió sus puertas al público en septiembre, haciendo historia como la primera escuela en la isla basada en la pedagogía Waldorf. Algunas actividades memorables han sido la Caminata del Farol y el Espiral de Adviento donde maestros, facultad, padres e hijos participaron juntos en una experiencia especial con velas, flores, canto y cuento. Otra actividad especial lo fue el Festival de Invierno Caribeño, un evento comunitario para recaudar fondos para la Escuela Micael. Hubo demostraciones para los niños en arte, música, teatro de mesa, baile, yoga y educación ambiental. Esperamos tener un Festival de Primavera y más eventos abiertos a la comunidad en el semestre que sigue. La Matrícula está abierta para el semestre que viene y pronto estará abierto para el próximo año escolar. Exhibición de la escuela y orientaciones privadas son ofrecidos a petición y por cita.
As you walk in to the peach colored room with stained glass windows you smell warm bread baking and hear children playing. The children are building playhouses and inviting each other into their silk-curtained homes, bringing baskets of wooden fruit and vegetables to share. The teacher is attentively watching from a distance, while she hums and knits a jump rope for them to use outside. It is time to clean up; the teacher stands and begins folding a cloth, still humming. A student walks over to help fold and the other students begin putting their toys to sleep in their baskets on the shelves. They all help set the table and sit down together for their organic vegetarian meal they have each helped make. They bless their food, thanking the Earth and the Sun. The children enjoy their nutritious meal and then take their plate to the kitchen to wash. They quickly hurry back to their classroom for story-time. The teacher hums and plays a tune on the harp for them, followed by a story-theater of planting a carrot. A good-bye verse is sung all together and the children put on their shoes to play outside. They run out onto the green grounds covered in fruit trees, some jumping into the sandbox by the orange trees, others spinning on the tire swings under the mango tree. Iguanas scatter and birds chirp and sing in the distance. This is the Escuela Micael. The Escuela Micael in Aguadilla provides an alternative bilingual
education for young children on the Northwest side of Puerto Rico. The school, based on the fastest growing educational movement in the world: Waldorf or Rudolf Steiner education, offers a creative and balanced curriculum that integrates nature, the arts, and free play for preschool children of 3 and 4 years old. Waldorf education provides an artistic and detailed curriculum, which responds to and enriches every phase of a child’s development. It cultivates emotional and social intelligence, while connecting children with nature. Escuela Micael was founded by Dr. Gustavo Halley and Larisa Molinari. In September the school opened, making history as the first Waldorf based school on the island. Some highlights of the year have been the Candle Walk and the Advent Spiral where teachers, staff, parents and children participated together in an enlightening experience with candles, flowers, song, and story. Another special activity was the Caribbean Winter Festival, a community-wide event to raising funds for Escuela Micael. There were demos offered for the children in the areas of art, music, children’s theater, dance, yoga and environmental awareness. There are hopes to have a Spring Festival and more community events in the semester to come. Registration is now open for the second semester and soon will be open for the next school year. Tours and private orientation are offered upon request and appointment.
