It’s been 30 years since I’ve been on these winding roads. The last memory I have was in La Fatingo, a 1974 VW station wagon that sputtered and coughed under the duress of the meandering cow paths they call roads. The 2010 Jeep Wrangler drives with ease hugging the mountain side and letting me see out above the road to the oncoming cars. Jim’s hand remains on the horn as we take each curve. With only room for one vehicle the road is one blind spot moving into another. Horns are the polite way of saying get out of my way. The cow paths haven’t changed much over the years. I note more homes perched precariously along the mountain’s edges and all spaces are filled with primary colors. Homes have taken over the lush green so that pink, orange, blue, and purple stucco populate the land. The white lines along the roads tell me that we aren’t lost; that we still remain on a major cow path Highway 112. We have come to the State Park of Guajataca, Bosque Estatal De Guajataca, to watch birds. The reserve is closed due to lack of funding, but we pull off the side of the road and snuggle the Jeep into a crook out of the way of traffic. As with many of the parks, closures mean that the trails aren’t as well maintained but are still accessible to the public. Jim has his camera and binoculars around his neck. He listens for the calls of the birds. It is still early and the sun is just making its way through the skies. I too am listening but my ears hear too much. The coquies, small tree frogs, sing as do the crickets. I hear a cackle, the twirl of wings, and pecking on wood. Jim says we are bird watching but for me it is bird listening. Still a novice with focusing the binoculars I hear and rarely see the birds. The trails aren’t really delineated and we take what we believe is a trail to an underground karst cave. The post markers have numbers and arrows. The most useful of which is “This way to the highway”. If we www.laislareader.com | 05
get lost I will just walk out to the highway. Getting lost really isn’t a worry as our pace is slower than a tortoise. Jim has his binoculars up to his eyes most of the time. I listen, stare and listen some more. The tree canopy is lush and the birds I do see fly by and are absconded into the greenery. I finally spot with my virgin eyes the Puerto Rican hummingbird. The wings twitter and the bird hovers, eating insects and spiders off the tree limbs. This hovering allows me to focus with my binoculars. Four inches of emerald green and brown mark what I later learn is the Green Mango. There is little time to revel in my binocular success as Jim spots what he considers the prize, a Puerto Rican Tody or what the locals call a San Pedrito, Little Saint Peter. I leave the binoculars dangling on my neck and soften my ears and eyes, keeping calm so the bird will appear. I’ve developed the bird watcher’s neck, crunched in the back from looking upward. I massage the kinks, refusing to take my eyes off the spot where I hear the nasal bee-beep song. Jim has moved on after I hear the clicking of his camera. Hopefully he has captured the Tody in a photograph so that if I fail to see it, I can at least know that I was nearby. But patience pays off and I get a glimpse of what I will always cherish. Not much larger than a humming bird, I spot a pudgy, tiny and brightly colored bird. Its long red bill and ruby red throat is tipped upward and its fuzzy yellow underside is set off by its emerald green upperparts. Endeared, I learn later that this small forest gem is known to sit quietly with its bill tilted upward scanning the understory for insect prey. Once captured the Puerto Rican Tody lands on another perch and takes its upright posture for the next find. While the “Little Saint Peter” can be found all over the island, particularly in the dense growths of the karst hills and mountains such as El Yunque and Guanica State Forest, I only hear it and miss the sight part of birding. My sense is that despite its bright colors, its speed and quiet pose allows for the disappearing or merging with the surrounding greenery. My fascination with The Puerto Rican Tody is similar to my love of the island itself. Endemic only to Puerto Rico the San Pedrito charms it way into your heart. The island with its unique geography, colorful display of life, its winding roads that bring you to vast vistas, replicates the Tody; the beauty of the island compressed into this pudgy emerald red billed bird.
Hace 30 años que anduve por estas carreteras serpenteante. La ultima memoria que tengo de ellas es en La Fatingo, una guagua VW de 1974 que chisporroteaba y carraspeaba bajo la coacción de los lentos caminos de vacas, las llamadas calles. El Jeep Wrangler 2010 se maneja fácilmente, abrazando las orillas de la montaña y permitiendo me ver sobre la carretera a los carros que vienen en la dirección contraria. La mano de Jim se mantiene sobre la bocina al pasar cada curva. Con solo espacio para un carro, la carretera se convierte en una curva siega tras otra. Las bocinas son el modo “cortés” de decir “sálganse del medio”. Los caminos de la vaca no han cambiado mucho durante los años. Observo más casas precariamente encaramadas a la orilla de las montañas, llenando todos los espacios de colores primarios. Las casas han asumido el control del exuberante verdor, de modo que el estuco rosado, anaranjado, azul, y púrpura ahora puebla los alrededores. Las líneas blancas a lo largo del camino me dicen que no nos hemos perdido, que aun estamos en uno de los caminos de las vacas principales, la carretera 112. Hemos llegado al Bosque Estatal de Guajataca para avistar aves. Debido a la falta de recursos, la reserva ha sido clausurada, estacionamos el Jeep al recodo de la calle alejados del tráfico. Como es el caso con muchos parques, los cierres significan que los caminos no son mantenidos, pero aun son accesibles al público. Jim tiene su cámara y binoculares alrededor de su cuello. Esta atento a las llamadas de los pájaros. Aun es temprano y el sol apenas se asoma por las nubes. También estoy escuchando, pero oigo demasiado. Los coquies, pequeños sapitos de árbol, cantan junto a los grillos. Escucho un cacareo, el girar de alas y picotazos sobre madera. Jim dice que estamos avistando aves pero a mí sentir, estamos escuchando aves. Aun novata con los binoculares trato de enfocar; escucho pero casi nunca veo las aves. Las sendas no están muy bien delineados y andamos por lo que creemos ser un camino hacia una cueva karst subterránea. Los postes que rotulan los caminos tienen flechas y números. El más útil de estos es el que dice: “Hacia la autopista.” Si me pierdo simplemente camino hacia la autopista. Nos movemos al ritmo de una tortuga así que no nos preocupamos en perdernos. La mayor parte del tiempo Jim mantiene sus binoculares pegados a sus ojos. Escucho, miro y escucho un poco más. Las copas de los árboles son exuberantes
y las aves que logro ver, pasan volando y fugaz entre el follaje. Al fin alcanzo ver con ojos vírgenes el colibrí puertorriqueño. Las alas gorjean y el pájaro cernea, alimentándose con insectos y arañas en las ramas del árbol. Al cernerse, me da oportunidad para enfocar mis binoculares. Cuatro pulgadas de verde esmeralda y una mancha de color marrón, lo que luego aprendo es el Mango Verde. Hay poco tiempo para celebrar mi triunfo binocular ya que Jim ve, lo que el considera el premio, un San Pedrito. Los binoculares quedan guindados de mi cuello, difumino mis oídos y ojos, manteniéndome calmada para que aparezca el pajarito. Ya he contraído el famoso cuello de avistar aves, la espalda desbaratada por mirar hacia arriba. Masajeo los nudos, no voy a bajar la vista del lugar donde escucho el canto beep-beep nasal. Jim ya se marcha después de haber escuchado el clic de su cámara. Ojala haya capturado el San Pedrito en fotografía, así si no logro verlo puedo afirmar que al menos estuve cerca. Pero soy recompensada por mi paciencia y logro un vislumbre, el cual siempre apreciaré. Apenas un poquito más grande que el colibrí, veo un pájaro pequeñito y gordito, con colores brillantes. Su largo pico carmesí y garganta rojo rubí están inclinados hacia arriba, su pecho de vello amarillo resalta contra su cuerpo verde esmeralda. Encantada, mas adelante aprendo que esta pequeña gema del bosque tiene como característica sentarse silenciosamente con su pico inclinado hacia arriba ojeado su alrededor buscando insectos. Una vez captura la presa, el San Pedrito aterriza en otra percha y asume postura para encontrar el siguiente. Aun que el pequeño San Pedrito puede ser encontrado por todas partes de la isla, particularmente en los crecimientos densos de las colinas y montañas de karst, tales como El Yunque y Bosque de Guánica, solamente logro escucharlo y me pierdo la parte visual del avistamiento de aves. Me da la sensación que a pesar de sus colores brillantes, su velocidad y postura tranquila, permite la desaparición o fusión al circundante verdoso. Mi fascinación con el San Pedrito es comparable al amor que siento por La Isla en sí. Endémico solamente a Puerto Rico el San Pedrito capta el alma con su encanto. La Isla con su geografía única, exhibición de vida colorida, sus caminos sinuosos que te llevan a vastas vistas, replican al San Pedrito; la belleza de La Isla comprimida en este pajarito color esmeralda de pico rojo.

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Rincón tomará lugar del 20 al 25 de abril en varios puntos alrededor del pintoresco pueblo costero. Tuve la oportunidad de charlar con uno de los directores del festival, Doug Lantz, quien nos habla sobre qué inspiró el festival, cómo se desarrolla este evento y la importancia de el festival para la industria del cine independiente en Puerto Rico. Lantz nos adelanta lo que será presentando en el festival. Recomiendo que no se lo pierdan, promete impresionar todos los niveles de cineastas a nivel mundial. ¿Cuál fue su inspiración para crear este estilo de festival en La Isla? ¿Por qué seleccionó a Rincón para llevarlo acabo? Al ser un cineasta de documentales, he viajado a muchos lugares del mundo con mi película asistiendo a festivales de cine. Esto me movió a preguntarles a mis tíos, propietarios del Lazy Parrot y residentes de Rincón, si la comunidad de Rincón disfrutaría de un festival como éste. Y en el 2008 lanzamos nuestro primer festival con una perspectiva exclusiva: mostrar las películas frente a la playa y en las afueras de hoteles hermosos, en vez de teatros encerrados. Rincón es un destino turístico muy acogedor con una diversidad de personas lo que facilitó la decisión de presentar este espectáculo allí.

En RIFF, escogemos películas que sentimos que van a entusiasmar o emocionar a la audiencia. En este festival también contamos con noches de interpretaciones temáticas distintas y este año presentaremos dos noches de comedia, una noche de cortometrajes de horror, una noche dedicada a documentales, y la noche de premios que culminará el festival. Además tendremos proyecciones diurnas en Villa Cofresí donde podrás disfrutar de la playa, el sol, la piscina, la barra y el restaurante mientras ves las películas. Un pase diurno cuesta sólo $10 y podrás ver todas las películas que desees durante el día en el placentero ambiente de Villa Cofresí.
También estamos muy orgullosos de anunciar que el flautista y artesano puertorriqueño, Edwin Gerena estará participando y deleitándonos con su flauta durante uno de los eventos nocturnos.
Nuestro comité de selección y jueces esta formado de profesionales de la industria de televisión y cine quiénes han trabajado o siguen trabajando para compañías como Miramax, Sony, ABC, Disney y A&E.
¿Qué porcentaje de las películas recibidas son de puertorriqueños? Recibimos un número importante de películas de puertorriqueños y las destacamos durante el festival. Todas las películas hechas por puertorriqueños, de puertorriqueños o con actores puertorriqueños son de un interés especial en cuanto a nuestro proceso de selección.
Los escenarios del festival son actualizados en hoteles frente a la playa dándole al espectador la oportunidad de ver películas de alta calidad mientras disfrutan de las playas encantadoras de Puerto Rico. Cada tarde en este festival los cineastas y los espectadores se reúnen para una cena exquisita y películas bajo las estrellas en hoteles y restaurantes alrededor de Rincón en varios eventos con diversas interpretaciones temáticas.
¿Qué nos espera este año? Estamos muy entusiasmados con el programa de este año. Estaremos compartiendo muchas películas de Sundance 2010. Al igual que algunas películas que fueron nominadas para los Academy Awards de este año en la categoría de cortometraje. Contamos con películas de Canadá, España, Cambodia, Cuba, Francia, Suecia, Republica de Czech, Australia y EEUU/Puerto Rico por mencionar algunas. Julio Cabrera de Puerto Rico, quien ganó Mejor Cortometraje el año pasado con la película titulada “Naco” regresará con un estreno mundial de su nuevo cortometraje, “Mine”. Eddie Rosenstein de Nueva York, ganador de Mejor del Festival en 2009 regresará este año con dos documentales.
¿Qué clase de película es considerada para el festival? ¿Quién escoge lo que se presenta durante el festival? ¿Quién evalúa las películas que recibirán premios? Las películas que se escogen deben cumplir con solo un requisito: Deben ser entretenidas. En RIFF nos enfocamos en pelícu

¿Cuál es el objetivo fundamental de este festival? La misión del Festival de Cine de Rincón es fomentar y apoyar la cultura y el arte en Puerto Rico a través del medio cinematográfico. El festival busca inspirar a estudiantes futuros y actuales del cine en cuanto al arte de la cinematologia. Al igual que mejorar la experiencia de ver películas en Puerto Rico a través de un evento creativo, único y muy divertido. Contamos con categorías de premios especiales para cineastas puertorriqueños y para películas en español al igual que películas internacionales y americanas.
¿Piensas que este festival inspira los cineastas jóvenes puertorriqueños? En RIFF, tenemos una conexión particular con los cineastas jóvenes de Puerto Rico. Y cada año le damos una beca de $500 en efectivo a un cineasta sobresaliente.

The 3rd annual Rincon International Film Festival takes place April 20-24 at different venues around this quaint beach town. I had the honor of catching up with one of the directors of the film festival, Doug Lantz, for a glimpse into what inspired the festival, how it unfolds and what the festival means for the independent film industry in Puerto Rico. Lantz also gives us a preview of this year’s spectacular, a must see event that will surely impress all levels of film buffs worldwide. What inspired you to create such a festival on the island? And why did you pick Rincon as the venue? As a documentary filmmaker myself, I traveled with my film around the world attending film festivals. This inspired me to ask my aunt and uncle, owners of the Lazy Parrot and residents of Rincon, whether this would be something that the community of Rincon would enjoy. We launched our first festival in 2008, bringing a unique perspective of screening films beachfront and outdoors at beautiful resorts and not in stuffy theaters. Rincon is a wonderful tourist destination with a vast spectrum of people and was an easy choice for setting up this entertaining festival. RIFF events are staged at beachfront resorts, giving patrons the opportunity to take in great films while enjoying Puerto Rico’s beautiful beaches. Every evening at this destination festival, filmmakers and attendees gather for an exquisite dinner and a themed movie event under the stars. What types of films do you consider for the festival? Who selects what the public will see? And who judges the films that will receive awards? The selected films have to meet one main
goal-- they must be entertaining. At RIFF, we focus on films that make people laugh, cry, or learn something through watching them. Many film festivals present “art films” which leave audience members a little sleepy in their seats. At RIFF, we carefully select films that we feel the audience will be enthused about seeing. We also have themed evenings at the festival. This year we will have two comedy nights, a fright night of scary short films, a documentary night and closing awards night. We also have daytime screenings at Villa Cofresí, where you can enjoy the beach, the sun, the pool, the bar and restaurant, while you partake of the films. A $10 Day-pass will allow you to see as many films as you like, all day, at Villa Cofresí. Our selection and judging committee is made up of Film and TV industry professionals who have or still work for some major companies, including: Miramax, Sony, ABC, Disney, and A&E. What can we expect this year? Are there any return filmmakers? What are some of the countries participating? We are very excited about the program this year. We have many Sundance 2010 films that we will be sharing with our Rincon audience, as well as a couple films that were nominated for Academy Awards this year in the short film category. We have films from Canada, Spain, Cambodia, Cuba, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Australia and USA/Puerto Rico to name a few. Julio Cabrera of Puerto Rico, who won best short film last year for Naco, will be returning with the World Premiere of his new short, Mine. this year with 2 documentary films. We are proud to announce the screening of the World Premiere short film, “This Time” by Director Matthew “Mac” Cherry, previously of the Cincinnati Bengals, and starring Puerto Rican actress Reagan Gomez. Both are expected to be in attendance at the festival this year. We are also proud to announce that Puerto Rican flutist and artisan, Edwin Gerena, will be attending and playing for us during one of the evening venues. What would you say is the ultimate goal of this festival? The mission of the Rincon International Film Festival is to support and promote culture and the arts in Puerto Rico through the medium of film. The festival seeks to inspire students, future and current filmmakers in the art of filmmaking, and to enhance the movie viewing experience in Puerto Rico through creative, unique and entertaining events. With special award categories for Puerto Rican filmmakers and Spanish Language films as well as International and American Films. Of the films you receive, what percentage are from Puerto Ricans? We receive a great number of Puerto Rican films and highlight them throughout the festival. Films made by Puerto Ricans, about Puerto Ricans or featuring Puerto Rico are of special interest in our selection process. Do you feel that this film festival inspires young Puerto Rican filmmakers? At RIFF, we have a special connection to young Puerto Rican Filmmakers and every year we give a $500 cash award scholarship to an up and coming Puerto Rican filmmaker.

When I first met the owners of Ola Lola`s they told me they were from Kalamazoo and I couldn’t help but laugh. I’ve heard the word, but didn’t realize it was a real place. I ordered a drink and while sitting at the bar, I noticed they were waving and smiling at everyone who passed by. I had to ask, “Do you know all of these people?” The answer was no and the first thing that popped into my head was people from Kalamazoo must be really friendly. Not only are they two of the friendliest people you will meet they are also great restaurateurs, transforming a roadside shack into one of the coolest bars in P.R.Ola Lola is built around a welcoming, laidback social atmosphere with a sense of humor. La primera vez que conocí a los dueños de Ola Lola me dijeron que eran de Kalamazoo y no pude aguantar las ganas de reír. He escuchado el dicho, pero nunca pensé que era un lugar real. Ciudadano ejemplar y Artista proactivo para su comunidad... Norman Palléns nació en Bridgeport, Connecticut y a los cuatro años se muda a Quebradillas donde vive actualmente con su esposa y dos hijas. Es un ciudadano ejemplar y un artista proactivo para su comunidad. EG: ¿Cómo describirías tu arte y lenguaje estético? NP: Es algo que sale de uno…como parte de su personalidad. Recuerdo que de niño podía estar observando una hoja que arrastraba el viento y ver como se movía la sombra que formaba y el rastro que dejaba en la tierra. Detalles insignificantes para la mayoría de las personas que me hacían ver cosas diferentes. Quizás esos detalles son lo que hacen mí propuesta artística diferente, las cosas sencillas que pasamos por alto y no apreciamos su belleza. El color en mis obras abunda y no siempre es lo esperado, eso hace que se convierta en una obra, no en algo ya conocido y anticipado.
EG: ¿Qué te inspira? ¿Tienes alguna musa? NP: La inspiración para mis trabajos es algo que no puedo describir como llega. Puede ser algo espontáneo extraído de alguna conversación o un recuerdo. Por ejemplo tengo una obra abstracta titulada ventanas del alma gracias unas personas que no conozco que estaban conversando a mi lado y escuche el refrán en su conversación "Los ojos son las ventanas del alma" ese refrán estuvo en mi mente varios días antes de que comenzara a pintarlo. EG: Aparte de la pintura trabajas mucho con los niños y otros grupos en la comunidad ¿nos puedes contar un poco sobre esto? NP: Sí, he trabajado con diferentes proyectos comunitarios. Uno de ellos es el mural en mosaicos que está en la carretera #2 en la entrada de Quebradillas. Este proyecto es una iniciativa del municipio y estuve
trabajando en el por 20 meses junto a estudiantes de las escuelas públicas. En él pasaron unos 80 estudiantes que aprendieron a trabajar el arte del mosaico en murales y 32 de ellos se certificaron como artesanos. Luego ofrecí un taller de mosaicos a jóvenes que violaron el código de orden pública y así completaban sus horas de servicio a la comunidad y se construyó el mural del pirata que está frente al mural que mencioné anteriormente. El año pasado hice una propuesta artística al Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña junto al municipio de Quebradillas y ofrecí un taller de mosaicos para jóvenes y adultos de las Comunidades Especiales de Quebradillas en el cual se construyeron 7 murales dando la bienvenida a cada uno de los barrios del pueblo. Actualmente sirvo como líder voluntario del Departamento de Extensión Agrícola y estoy ofreciendo un taller de pirograbado a personas mayores con la meta de que www.laislareader.com | 21

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Norman Palléns moved to Quebradillas at the young age of four where he resides with his wife and two daughters. Palléns is a model citizen and a dynamic artist who continuously gives back to his community.
EG: How would you describe your art and esthetic language? NP: It’s something that just comes out…like your personality. As a child I recall watching a leaf being dragged by the wind, I could see how the shadows were transformed and the details that it left in the dirt. Details that are insignificant to most people allowed me to see things differently. Maybe it is these details that make my artwork unique, the simple things that we don’t pay attention to and whose beauty we don’t always appreciate. By using a plethora of colors in my pieces and not what one is used to seeing, it becomes a work of art, something unexpected and unknown. EG: What inspires you? Do you have a muse? NP: There is no way to describe how the inspiration for my art comes to me. It could be something spontaneous that I heard in a conversation or a memory. For example: there is a piece entitled “Ventanas del Alma” (Window into
my soul), thanks to a conversation I overheard between acquaintances. They used the saying “the eyes are the windows to the soul”, that saying stuck in my mind for a few days before I began painting. EG: Aside from painting, you work with children and other groups in your community. Can you share a little about this with us? NP: Yes, I have worked with many different projects in the community. One of them includes the mosaic mural on Rd. #2 located at the entrance of Quebradillas. The municipality funded this project and I worked on it for over 20 months alongside students from the public schools. There were a total of 80 students that learned how to complete mosaic murals and 32 of them were certified as artisans. Later, I offered a course on mosaics to youths who had violated the law and were able to complete community service with this course. Along with these students we built the pirate mosaic across from the one mentioned above. Last year, through the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña and the city of Quebradillas, I offered a mosaics workshop to youths and adults from special communities, in which we created 7 mosaics murals, they adorn the entrances to each of the neighborhoods (barrios) of our town. Currently I serve as the volunteer leader of the Department of Agriculture and I am offering a workshop on pyrography [the art of word burning] to the elderly community with the goal of getting them certified as artisans. Two years ago I created a non-profit organization called “Quebradillas a Todo Color, INC.” This organization organizes art fairs and events in the town of Quebradillas every six months. We invite artists and artisans from the area to participate in these events. Every March and September you can count on catching the fair. Participantes en el proyecto incluyeron dos maestros de la escuela superior la Sra. Marlene Arbelo y el Sr. Juan Rivera, dos artistas Eliseo Echevarria y Norman Palléns y fue construido con la ayuda de jóvenes estudiantes y cuidadnos que gratuitamente donaron su tiempo y talento. Éste representa en forma artística cosas relevantes de Quebradillas tomando como referencia la salida y la puesta del sol. Comenzando al lado éste en dirección hacia el oeste del muro representado el amanecer con la entrada al mar y los peces de arrecife que más abundan en nuestras costas. A media mañana comienzan los delfines que viven en los mares templados y acostumbran vivir en grupos. Le siguen la ballenas jorobadas especie en peligro de extinción los cuales pueden ser avistadas desde nuestras costas en los meses de enero, febrero y marzo cuando nos vistan para reproducirse. Al medio día están las tortugas marinas El Tinglar tortuga más grande del mundo que puede medir hasta 10 pies y pesar hasta una tonelada y que anidan en nuestras costas, el Carey es una de las cuatro tortugas que anidan en nuestras playas y es una especie amenazada a su extinción. Al comenzar la tarde el agua se convierte en cielo y comienza la flora presentando en primer plano la Ceiba árbol que puede llegar a medir 92 pies de altura y que adorna nuestra entrada al pueblo. En él plasmamos nuestro escudo y como bandas de colores que oscilan creamos la bandera de nuestro pueblo. Al terminar la Ceiba cae la noche desde donde sale la frase “Yo vi en Quebradillas la noche más linda que puede soñar” frase tomada del himno de Quebradillas compuesto por Guillermo Venegas insigne compositor quebradillano. Cae la noche y vemos el cielo, el mar y la tierra; en reposo vemos www.laislareader.com | 24
las garzas sobre un árbol de uvas playeras, paisaje común en nuestras costas. Sale el sol nuevamente y comenzamos con mariposas Atlanteas Tulita, también llamadas arlequín puertorriqueño, mariposa endémica puertorriqueña que solo habita en el sector Quebrada Mala y Barrio Terranovas de Quebradillas. Ella es una de los cuatro géneros endémicos de las Antillas Mayores. Cercano al medio día comienzan las aves que más abundan en Quebradillas. En total hay ocho especies cinco son endémicas: el Múcaro, el Zumbadorcito, el Pájaro Bobo, el Carpintero y la Reinita. Comienza la tarde y tenemos el sapo Concho una especie de anfibio endémica de Puerto Rico, que esta en peligro de extinción. Termina el mural con un mensaje de dedicatoria del
Alcalde Heriberto Vélez y el logo de las Comunidades Especiales quienes ayudaron con los servicios de un artista. Measuring 310 ft. wide along the base and 25.5 ft. tall at the center, the mural covers a total of 3,810 sq. ft. with over 150,000 pieces of tile and a spectrum of 58 tones. Participants in the project included two High School teachers: Mrs. Marlene Arbelo and Mr. Juan Rivera and two artists: Eliseo Echevarria and Norman Palléns. The mural was constructed with the help of students and citizens who graciously gave of their time and skills. It is an artistic representation of significant features in Quebrdillas, using the sunrise and sunset as a timeline. As we begin on the east, going towards the west, the mosaic presents daybreak entering the ocean and
the fish that abound in the reefs of our coast. At mid-morning the dolphins, living in warm water and traveling in groups, begin to emerge. Followed by the humpback whales, species in danger of extinction, which can be seen from our coastal shores in January, February, and March when they come to reproduce. At mid-day the sea turtles swim into the mosaic. The leatherback, which is the largest turtle in the world, can measure up to 10 ft. long and weigh up to a ton, comes to our shores to nest. Then the Carey which is one of the four types of turtles that nests on our beaches, and is also in danger of extinction. Early afternoon the water turns to sky and our flora is exposed. Highlighting the Ceiba, a tree that can grow up to 92 ft. tall and which decorates the entrance to our beautiful town. Our flag and emblem were inspired by the Ceiba. After the Ceiba, night falls and the phrase “In Quebradillas I saw the most beautiful night I have ever dreamed,” appears, which was taken from our hymn composed by our own Guillermo Vargas. Night falls and we see the sky, the ocean and the land at ease. See the herons fly over the sea grapes, a site that is most common along our coastlines. The sun shines through again and the Atlanteas Tulita butterflies, also known as the Puerto Rican harlequin, flutter. This Puerto Rican endemic butterfly can be seen in the neighborhoods of Quebrada Mala and Terranovas of Quebradillas. She is one of the four species endemic to the Greater Antilles. As mid-day approaches you’ll notice the birds that inhabit Quebradillas, there are a total of eight species, five of which are endemic to the area: the Mucaro owl, Emerald hummingbird, Puerto Rican LizardCuckoo bird, Woodpeckers and Elfin-woods Warbler. Early afternoon begins, the Concho frog hops on the scene, another species endemic to Puerto Rico and in danger of extinction. Then the mosaic mural is sealed with a dedication from Mayor Heriberto Velez and the special community’s logo, which represents the participants who helped the artists.

It’s simple. Superaquello is the most important band in the Puerto Rican independent music scene. Searching for a sound that truly expresses the realities and day to day of Puerto Rican life in the 90s without losing its foreign influences of the 80s like the alternative rock and the electronica movement, Superaquello is born. The brilliant minds of Eduardo Alegría, a post-modern dancer (genre which puts in question the hierarchy of traditional dance), and Francis Perez (psychiatrist) come together setting the foundation of the group. Adding on Patricia Davila (dancer and main vocals), Pablo Santiago (keyboard and synthesizer), and Jorge Castro (guitar and bass) completes the perfect formation of the group. Previously released albums include: Mu Psiqui-Ta (2002), Bien Gorgeous (2003), La Emergencia (2004), Ladrones y Mentirosos (2005) and after a recent split, their most recent production, Superaquello Interpreta la Tarde (2010). The supposed absence of Patricia majestically strengthens the record.
Superaquello transcends generations, the young masses (such as my 15 year old daughter), are captivated by their upbeat music while our generation (from the 80s) identify with their words on a daily basis. Their music has represented [Puerto Ricans] in festivals like FOCO in Chicago, LAMV (Latin Alternative Music Conference) in New York in addition to sharing the stage with big name groups such as Café Tacuva and Juana Molina. In Puerto Rico, Superaquello, whose songs deal with psychological and social political issues have had record assistance in alternative art venues such as Enlaces Café in Viejo San Juan, Taller Cé in Rio Piedras and La Respuesta in Santurce. In order to reach international expansion, which is a challenge tied to independent bands, they are currently managed by Atrum Orbis. The author, Jose Morales, is a cultural coordinator and facilitator as well as the founder of the alternative art venue, La Respuesta in Santurce.

En Puerto Rico, Superaquello, cuyos temas son relacionados a la psicología y la política social cotidiana, han logrado quebrar record de asistencia en espacios de arte alternativos como Enlaces Café en Viejo San Juan, Taller Cé en Río Piedras y La Respuesta en Santurce. Actualmente para poder lograr la expansión internacional tan difícilmente atada a las bandas independientes, son manejados por Atrum Orbis. THE RAMEY BASE SCHOOLS

Collaborating Authors: Garred Gailes and Ariana Morgan One interesting historical event that occurred during the formation of the former Ramey Base (Borinquen field) that still impacts the area was the development of the first schools. The first “school house” built in 1939 was located on what is now East Parade Street. The word had gone out by a general contractor to recruit various builders and laborers that were needed to begin major construction projects such as the hangars, barracks, a golf course, landing strip, as well as the only school. The clearing and leveling of the former cane fields attracted workers from all over the island and even some from the United States. By 1941, much of the construction had been completed and students began to enroll in the first base school. The bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 interrupted the plans for the newly built “school house” and abruptly led to the evacuation by steamship of all dependent women and children. The brand new school was converted into base headquarters until after the war when Headquarters was moved to Crown Road. In August of 1946, the official school began operating with a total of eleven teachers, one hundred and twenty-seven students from grades one through twelve, under the supervision of Mrs. Florence Fanning. In addition to the basic curriculum, the school eventually added music, art, industrial arts, home economics and Spanish. One student graduated that year. By April of 1948, the name of the school was changed to Ramey School for Dependents.

As the role of Ramey Base expanded with the Cold War in 1952, so did the student population. The need for a separate elementary school became apparent; consequently, construction began on Hook Road Elementary School in January of the same year. By 1961, with the continued growth of the base, it was determined that yet another school building was needed for the overload of students, so construction of another 15 room elementary school on E Street began. By the early 1960’s, there were three schools operating on the base at three separate locations. By the end of 1968, the continued growth and expansion of Ramey supported the planning and construction for a new campus-style school to accommodate 1000 junior and senior high school students. The new school was to be equipped with air-conditioning, library/media center and modern theater. Upon completion, the first students arrived in 1971. Ramey Air Force Base officially closed in November of 1973. For the interest of the public, the four school buildings constructed on Ramey are still in use both in the private and public sector. The first school building, located on East Parade was turned over to the Commonwealth and is being used as a Job Corps facility. The E Street School is currently used as a public middle school, while Hook Road School serves the Coast Guard as a community office facility for base residents. The final school built on Arch Road, now known as Ramey School, is still operating as a federal school for grades Pre-K through 12-unit school for Coast Guard, Customs, Border Patrol and other federal government agency dependents.
The recently established BORINQUEN FIELD / RAMEY AFB MUSEUM is located on the second floor of Hangar 403 (Cargo Terminal) at the east end of Hangar Road on the former Air Force Base. It is open to the public every Saturday from 9AM to 4PM. There is no fee. The museum is a repository and place of safekeeping for documents, photos, historical items and remembrances of Borinquen Field/Ramey AFB as it existed between 1939 and 1973. It serves also to promote the historical significance as well as to educate the public about the original role and function as a strategic air base during WWII and the important role it played during the height of the Cold War. The museum provides material for research and is an educational center dealing with the history of the base and other projects related to aviation history.
Un evento histórico que ocurrió durante la formación de la antigua Base Ramey (Borinquen Field) que impacta el área hasta el día de hoy, fue el desarrollo de las primeras “casas escolares”. La primera escuela fue construida en 1939 en lo que hoy es la Calle “East Parade”. Un contratista general publicó un aviso de reclutamiento de obreros y carpinteros para proyectos que incluían la construcción de los hangares, las barracas, el campo de golf, la pista de aterrizaje al igual que la única escuela. La limpieza y nivelación de las fincas de caña de azúcar atrajo obreros de toda la isla y algunos desde los Estados Unidos. Ya para el 1941 se había progresado bastante con el edificio y los estudiantes comienzan a matricularse en la primera “casa escolar” de la base. En diciembre del 1941 el ataque en Pearl Harbor interrumpió los planes de la nueva “casa escolar”. Todos los familiares de los soldados en la base fueron traslados urgentemente por barco al continente. La nueva escuela se convirtió en la sede administrativa de la base. Al finalizar la guerra, el edificio se convierte nuevamente en una escuela como fue el plan original y los cuarteles generales de la base se mudan para el edificio ubicado en la Calle “Crown”. Bajo la supervisión de la Sra. Florence Fanning, en agosto de 1946 la escuela oficialmente abrió con un total de once maestras y ciento veintisiete estudiantes de primer grado hasta el doce. Además del currículo estándar de la escuela eventualmente se añaden clases de Música, Arte, Artes Industriales, Economía Domestica y Español. En abril de 1948 la escuela fue renombrada ‘La Escuela de Dependientes de Ramey’.Al aumentar el rol de la Base Ramey con la Guerra Fría en el 1952 creció el número de estudiantes en la base.
La necesidad de una escuela elemental fue obvia y se comienza construcción en la Calle “Hook” en enero del mismo año. En 1961 el continuo crecimiento de la base crea la necesidad de construir otra escuela para acomodar la sobre capacidad estudiantil. . Rápidamente comienza construcción de 15 salones para la nueva escuela elemental en la Calle ´E´. Al comienzo de los años sesenta tres escuelas operaban en la base en tres ubicaciones distintas. Con el crecimiento y expansión de la Base, se promueve la planificación y construcción de una nueva Escuela Superior con un campus abierto de 1000 alumnos en 1968. La nueva escuela esta equipada con aire acondicionado, una biblioteca sofisticada y un teatro moderno. Al terminar, los primeros estudiantes ingresan en 1971. Base Ramey cierre en noviembre de 1973. Interesante para el público, los cuatro edificios escolares que fueron construidas en Ramey siguen en uso por el sector privado y publico. El primer edificio escolar ubicado en Calle “East Parade” fue entregado al Estado Libre Asociado y es usado para el servico de Job Corps. Actualmente la escuela de la Calle “E” esta funcionando como una escuela intermedia publica. Mientras la de la Calle “Hook” funciona como oficinas comunitarias para residentes de la base del Coast Guard. La ultima escuela construida en la Calle “Arch”, ahora conocida como “Ramey School”, sigue funcionando como escuela federal de los grados Pre-Kinder al doce para el personal del Coast Gurad, Aduana, Border Patrol u otras agencias federales.
El nuevo MUSEO BORINQUEN FIELD / RAMEY AFB esta localizado en el 2ndo piso del Hangar 403 (Terminal de cargo) al lado Este de Hangar Rd. en el antiguo Base de Fuerza Aerea. Abre al publico todos los sabados de 9AM a 4PM. Es Gratis. Promueve la historia significativa y educa al publico en cual fue el papel y función original de la base como una base aéreo estratégico durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el papel importantísimo que desempeñó durante el punto álgido de la Guerra Fría. Un Viaje Largo La cerveza India Pale Ale (IPA), cuyo nombre simboliza el largo viaje para el cual inicialmente fue confeccionada, es una variación de la clásica Pale Ale de Inglaterra. La primera “India Ale” fue elaborada por George Hodgson en la cervecería Bow de Londres en los años 1790. Esta cerveza fue la solución a los problemas inherentes de enviar cerveza por largas distancias a los soldados y ciudadanos de la India. Las cervezas comunes de Inglaterra, los “ales” y “porters” se dañaban durante en este viaje largo y caluroso. La solución de Hodgson fue añadir más lúpulos (hops) y subir el contenido de alcohol (añadiendo más azúcar y grano de cebada) para mejor preservar la cerveza durante el viaje y tiempo de almacenaje en la India. Este proceso creó una cerveza bastante amarga, fuerte y refrescante que toleraba el viaje y a la vez lograba satisfacer y saciar la sed de los soldados en el destino final. La cerveza fue elaborada únicamente para exportación hasta 1827, cuando un naufragio ocurrió en el mar irlandés lo cual resulta en la venta de la cerveza a los locales. La nueva receta agarró fama rápida y desde entonces ha sido elaborada en Inglaterra, Irlanda y ahora en todo el mundo, incluso en Puerto Rico. Usualmente las IPA’s varían desde color oro a color rojo claro con una espuma marrón claro. El contenido de alcohol es alto, de 6% a 7.5% por volumen. Son cervezas con muchos lúpulos lo cual hace que sean amargas con una aroma floral y de hierbas. Los lúpulos son la flor de la misma viña de lúpulos, miembro de la familia de cannabis. Varios tipos de lúpulos son utilizados en diferentes momentos durante la fabricación de la cerveza para lograr características variadas. La IPA de temporada, La Taina, de nuestra cervecería local Old Harbor, fue elaborada con lúpulos frescos “Cascade” de una finca pequeña en Nueva York y con “Cascade” estándares del estado de Washington y lúpulos de Amarillo. A Long Voyage India Pale Ale (IPA) is a type of beer named for the long journey that it was originally brewed for. A variation of the classic English Pale Ale, the first “India Ale” was brewed by George Hodgson at Bow Brewery in East London in the 1790’s. This beer was a solution to a problem of shipping ales to soldiers and citizens of India. The standard ales and porters of England would spoil on the long hot journey. Hodgson’s solution was to add more hops to an already hoppy brew and raise the alcohol content (by adding extra grain and sugar) in order to preserve the beer for the trip as well as the shelf life in India. This created very bitter and very strong, crisp ale that could make the long voyage as well as quench a lot of seamen’s thirst on the other end of the trip. This beer was brewed for export only until 1827, when a shipwreck in the Irish Sea led to the cargo being auctioned off to locals. The new brew was a hit and has since then been brewed in England, Ireland and now all around the world including Puerto Rico. India Pale Ales are typically light golden to light red in color, with a pale brown head. It’s alcohol content is high, usually at least 6% and up to 7.5% alcohol by volume. They are very hoppy ales, which means bitter in taste with floral, grassy and herbal aromas. Hops are the flower of the hop vine, a member of the cannabis family. Different types of hops are used in different stages of the brewing process for different results. Our local brewery’s seasonal IPA, the Taina, was brewed with fresh New York State Cascade hops from a small farm, Standard Cascade hops from Washington, and Amarillo hops.

Sin duda todos hemos tenido a alguien cercano o conocemos a alguien quien ha sido afectado por el cáncer. Esta enfermedad no discrimina, afecta a los ancianos igual que jóvenes, a mujeres igual que a hombres. El masaje es muy eficiente en bajar los niveles de la ansiedad ya que éste incrementa la actividad del sistema nervioso parasimpático y reduce la tensión muscular que es común en individuos estresados. El sistema nervioso parasimpático también conocido como el sistema nervioso de “descanso y restauración” es responsable por recargar las glándulas adrenales, reparación y reconstrucción de células dañadas y permite que el sistema se relaje lo suficiente para poder rejuvenecerse. El masaje aumenta la función del sistema inmune al incrementar el número de células NK (“natural killer” o asesinas naturales), y estimula el sistema linfático circulando la linfa a través del cuerpo. Estudios demuestran que el masaje reduce ansiedad y aumenta el número de glóbulos bancos al igual que la cantidad de neutrofilo en la sangre de los niños con leucemia. Siempre consulte un oncólogo sobre su condición antes de someterse a este tipo de tratamiento corporal ya que para ciertos tipos de cáncer el masaje es contraindicado.

No doubt we all have, been close to, or know of, someone who has been affected by cancer. The disease does not discriminate as to who it affects; young or old, male or female. Treatment of cancer, though not as deadly as the disease itself, can be debilitating and extremely hard for the patient to undergo. Chemotherapy is extremely invasive to the system, dampening appetite, loss of hair, and lowering immune system functionality. The stress caused by hair loss alone, can overload and offset the ever-fragile endocrine system, which is in constant search of balance. Complementary treatment such as massage therapy, in conjunction with a team of medical professionals, can be very beneficial in the treatment of stress and body pain associated with cancer. Massage is very effective in lowering anxiety by increasing parasympathetic nervous system activity and reducing muscular tension that is common in stressed individuals. The parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the “rest and restore” nervous system is responsible for replenishing adrenal glands, repairing and rebuilding damaged cells, and allowing our body systems to rest long enough to recharge. Massage increases immune function by increasing natural killer cell numbers, and stimulates the lymphatic system by circulating lymph through the body. In children with leukemia, studies show that massage reduces anxiety and increases white blood cell and neutrophil counts in the blood stream. Massage is also good for relieving the symptoms of depression that many cancer patients experience by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Therapeutic touch can be a welcome way to cope with the pain of having cancer and a way to feel better when pills and drugs just don’t do it. Massage is also beneficial for care-providers of cancer patients who give constantly and rarely take time for themselves. If you or someone you know suffers from cancer, find a professional Massage Therapist who has knowledge and experience working with cancer patients. Always consult an oncologist about your condition prior to bodywork, as certain types of cancer contraindicate massage.

Xtreme Divers Nunca pensé que me lanzaría de un avión. O sea, tuve momentos en que el imagen me cruzó por la mente, pero realmente querría hacerlo?
XTREME DIVERS …que me filmen ya que yo misma no lo podría hacer, en éste mi primer brinco tándem
EL DIA ESTABA DESPEJADO, EL CIELO AZUL ... Nunca pensé que me lanzaría de un avión. O sea, tuve momentos en que el imagen me cruzó por la mente, pero realmente querría hacerlo? La realidad era que sí, supongo que sí quería lanzarme! No fue hasta que estaba hablando con Dennis Ritch de Pools Beach Rentals, quien estaba por completar su 63er brinco, que lo consideré seriamente y pensé que esto en realidad podría ser muy divertido. Dennis, no tan sólo me dio el animó, con su entusiasmo antes de brincar, pero su confianza en el equipo de paracaidismo y en los instructores me hizo sentir segura. Al llegar al aeropuerto de Arecibo, las preparaciones ya estaban encaminadas. Habían otros paracaidistas solistas ese día y su entusiasmo en cuanto al deporte, era inimitable. Jasón, mi instructor, rezumaba seguridad, conocimiento, y pura adrenalina del deporte. El hecho de que tenía una estructura formidable y una manera apacible me dejó tranquila inmediatamente. Sentí que esto realmente iba ser una experiencia única. Opté por filmar el brinco ¿quien no desearía captar esta experiencia en video? Además, al ser fotógrafa, fue una decisión fácil de hacer…que me filmen ya que yo misma no lo podría hacer, en éste mi primer brinco tándem. Básicamente estoy atada con correas a Jasón, quien tiene el poder y control del vertedor y líneas. Lo cual me da seguridad y miedo a la misma vez. No sé cuantas veces me reí antes de saltar, esa risa de nerviosismo. ¿Realmente iba a hacer esto?
El avión era pequeño, pero suficientemente capaz de subir a la altura de nuestro brinco, unos 10,000 pies. El día estaba despejado, el cielo azul, la costa se veía hermosa y sentí una ola de calma pasar por mi cuerpo mientras ascendíamos. Sentada en ese avión pequeño, atada a otro cuerpo, esperando saltar de un avión, me pasan muchas cosas por la mente. No fue hasta que abrió la puerta y Dennis se preparó para su salto que me chocó. El miró a Jasón, quien le dio la señal de confirmación y Dennis se lanzó del avión. Fue en ese instante que pensé: ¿“que estoy haciendo”? Bueno, fue un poco más explicito… Jasón y yo nos acomodamos en posición para brincar, miré hacia abajo y tragué fuerte [gulp!], nos mecimos tres veces y dimos un salto mortal desconectándonos del avión. Dando volteretas vi al mundo girando a mi alrededor. Nos nivelamos. Manos extendidas como si estuviera volando. Sorprendida de que las carcajeadas y los gritos de felicidad venían de mí. Literalmente, volar por el cielo fue una experiencia surreal. No podía dejar de sonreír. Sencillamente, adrenalina pura. Jasón jaló el cordón del paracaídas. Abrió. Silencio sereno. Una sensación de calma me abrazó el cuerpo. Al descender disfrutaba de la vista espectacular. El jalaba para la derecha y luego a la izquierda, girando y maniobrando en cada dirección. Parecía parar el tiempo mientras nos acercábamos al suelo, lentamente.
Rachel & the instructor El aterrizaje fue tan sereno que todos preguntaban si lo había hecho antes; créeme, Jasón lo hizo todo. Experimenté una de la ráfagas de adrenalina más grandiosas de mi vida. Si me preguntaras: ¿lo harías de nuevo? Por supuesto! Todavía, cuando veo el video, me río y me hace sentir tan bien. Todo el equipo, desde el piloto, al camarógrafo, a Jasón, mi instructor, hicieron de ésta una experiencia realmente espectacular!

SKYDIVING
When we arrived to the Arecibo airport, the preparations were in full swing. There were other solo jumpers that day as well and their enthusiasm for skydiving was beyond description. Jason, my instructor, exuded the confidence, knowledge and pure adrenaline for this sport. His massive build and gentle manner immediately put me at ease. I truly felt like this was going to be the experience of a lifetime. I opted to get a video shot of my jump, who wouldn't want to capture that on film? The fact that I'm a photographer only made that choice even easier to make…. Yes, have someone film it, since I wouldn't be able to on this my first tandem jump. I'm basically harnessed, attached to Jason who has the power and control of the shoot and lines; which is security and fear factor for me at the same time. I don't know how many times I laughed pre-jump, that nervous laugh… Was I actually going to do this??
out of the plane. At that instant I thought, "what am I doing?” All right, it was a bit more explicit than that, but…. Jason moved us into position for the jump; I looked downward. Big gulp! We rocked three times and somersaulted out of the plane. As we tumbled over and over, I saw the world spinning around me. We leveled off. My hands splayed outward as if I were flying. Amazed that the laughing and hoots of exhilaration were coming from me. It was so surreal to be literally flying through the air. I couldn't stop myself from smiling; it was simply the most intense rush of adrenaline. Jason pulled the cord to open the parachute. The hush of silence was serene. A sense of calm surrounded my body. The view was amazing as we made the descent. He pulled to the right and then to the left doing turns and spins in either direction.
It seemed as if time just stood still as the ground slowly approached. The landing The plane was tiny, but that's all we needed to was so gentle I had people ask if I'd done this before…it was all Jason, believe me. get to our ten thousand feet altitude for the jump. XTREME DIVERS It really wasn't anything that I'd thought I'd ever do-jump out of a plane. The vision had crossed my mind at times, but did I really want to? The realization was that, yes, I guess I really did want to skydive. It wasn't until one evening, when I spoke to Dennis Ritch of Pools Beach Rentals, who was soon to do his sixty-third solo jump, that I seriously considered this to be a fun thing to do. Not only did talking to Dennis give me that jolt of pre-jump exhilaration, but also, his confidence in the skydiving company and its instructors helped me feel at ease
