ART BRINGS JOY TO HAITI
Como ya todos sabemos, nuestros hermanos haitianos todavía sufren las consecuencias de un fatal terremoto el cual no sólo dejó familias completas sin nada, si no también dejó a muchos niños desamparados y huérfanos sin esperanzas y con miedo a ser robados para el tráfico ilegal de humanos. Las Hermanas Salesianas de Orocovis han organizado una serie de viajes a Haití con el propósito de llevar ayuda humanitaria a ciertos sectores de la sociedad haitiana como consecuencia de ésta tragedia.
La artista plástica Angélica M. Rivera ha dedicado gran parte de su vida artística a enseñar, ella fue invitada a participar como voluntaria dando clases de arte a estos niños. El 4 de julio hasta el 10 de julio 2010 fue el primero de tres viajes que se realizarán llevando y trayendo grupos de voluntarios para brindar un poco de esperanza y alegría a estos niños y niñas. El próximo viaje esta programado para septiembre. Para poder llevar a cabo con éxito estos talleres de bellas artes se necesita la colaboración de amigos que quieran ayudar donando materiales de arte. As we all know our Haitian neighbors are still suffering the consequences of a fatal earthquake which not only left families with nothing, but also, left many children helpless and orphaned without hope and living in fear of being stolen for illegal human trafficking. The Salesianas Sisters of Orocovis have organized a series of trips to Haiti with the purpose of providing humanitarian help to certain sectors of the Haitian society. Angelica M. Rivera, an artist, has dedicated a huge part of her artistic career to teaching and was invited as a volunteer to provide art classes to these children. The first of three trips to take place sending volunteers to and from Haiti to bring a little bit of hope and happiness to these boys and girls took place from the 4th to the 10th of July 2010. The next is scheduled for September. In order to successfully provide these art workshops they need help from fellow friends who would like to donate art materials. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL SPECIALIST STUDY THE COFFEE BERRY BORER IN PUERTO RICO
Especialistas en el control biológico estudian la Broca de Café en PR
On a recent trip to the mountain region of Castañer, located high in the middle of the island, known for its lush, optimal conditions for growing coffee, an international mix of biological control specialist gathered to continue their study of the plague known as the ‘coffee berry borer’ (CBB). The CBB is the most damaging insect to attack coffee here in Puerto Rico. The main purpose of the Coffee Board, led by its chairman, Jose Ledesma, who received a grant from the US Dept. of Agriculture, is to continue implementing a bio-control program, which eliminates the use of chemical pesticides, thereby helping solve this serious problem affecting the PR coffee industry. Coffee has been produced in this region for over 250 years, which allows for an excellent opportunity to conduct surveys and to speak directly with farmers concerning the CBB and the direct affects of this serious problem on their livelihoods. The specialist were welcomed with hospitality at the Hacienda Luis, a gorgeous, eco-friendly dwelling that captured the natural beauty of the mountains. Hosts, Jeannette & Arturo Palacios extended their local knowledge of the area. Meals were prepared with gusto and showmanship by Chef Pedro Julio Rivera Rosa. Recientemente durante un viaje a Castañer, una región montañosa ubicada en las alturas del centro de la isla, un lugar reconocido por su opulencia y optima condiciones para cosechar café, se reunió una mezcla internacional de especialistas en control biológico para estudiar la plaga conocida como la broca del café (BC). El BC es el insecto que más daño causa a los cultivos de café en Puerto Rico. El objetivo principal del Comité de Café, dirigido por José Ledesma, quien recibió un subvención del USDA, es continuar la implementación de un programa de control biológico, el cual eliminará el uso de pesticidas químicos cuyos resultados ayudarán aliviar ésta grave problema que afecta la industria del café en Puerto Rico. Por más de 250 años ésta región ha producido café, lo que brinde una oportunidad única para realizar encuestas y hablar directamente con los cosechadores sobre el BC y cómo se han visto afectados por éste. Los biólogos fueron recibidos por la Hacienda Luís, una hermosa vivienda ecológica, que captura la esencia y belleza natural de las montañas. Los anfitriones Jeannette & Arturo Palacios brindaron su conocimiento del área local. El Chef Pedro Julio Rivera Rosa preparó las comidas con muchísimo sabor y su reconocido teatralidad. JUEGOS CENTROAMERICANOS Y DEL CARIBE MAYAGüEZ 2010 Celebrating the wins and shaking off loses. The streets of Mayaguez were filled with athletes, fans, and party animals. Walking into a stadium to see live sports always puts a smile on my face and gives me a flutter in my belly. The Games were awesome! At first I was skeptical, think-
Celebrando los triunfos y sacudiéndose las perdidas. Las calles de Mayagüez se llenaron de atleta, fanáticos y fiesteros. ¡Los Juegos fueron un éxito! Siempre que ingreso a un estadio grande me hace sonreír y siento una cosquilla en el cuerpo. En un principio estaba escéptica, pensando
ing I’m not going near Mayaguez, the traffic will be awful. Quite the contrary, never had I made such good time! All the cities involved truly put their hearts into preparing for this amazing event and it showed in the people’s enthusiasm. All the towns fixed and painted storefronts, paved roads, built entire sports complexes and welcomed with a warm, Caribbean smile the much-anticipated visitors. Everywhere I went last month someone had a shirt, hat, pin or flag supporting the Games. It was exciting to see the Columbian, Mexican, Salvadorian, Jamaican, and many other athletic teams proudly wearing their gear around town. And as true Puerto Ricans, we do not need an excuse to party, so when the bars surrounding Paseo del Litoral put T.V.’s outside their businesses with beer and rum flowing the streets filled with this international array of characters cheering for their favorites. The musical line up for the Fiestas Olímpicas Centroamericana y del Caribe was jammed with salsa, merengue, bachata, reggae, indie-rock, electronica and every other genre Puerto Ricans enjoy.

Todas las ciudades envueltas realmente se dedicaron en preparar para este evento extraordinario y se notaba en el entusiasmo de la gente. Los pueblos arreglaron y pintaron las tiendas, pavimentaron las calles, construyeron complejos deportistas enteras y le dieron la bienvenida a los muy anticipados visitantes con una sonrisa calida, Caribeña. Donde sea que iba habían gente con camisas, gorras y banderas apoyando a los Juegos. Era emocionante ver Colombianos, Mejicanos, Salvadoreños, Jamaiquinos u otros con su equipo atlético alrededor del pueblo. Y sabemos que el puertorriqueño no necesita una excusa para hacer una gran fiesta, así que cuando las barras del Paseo del Litoral sacaron los televisores a la calle y con la cerveza y el ron fluyendo éstos se llenaron de personajes internacionales hinchando para sus favoritos. El lineup de música para las Fiestas Olímpicas Centroamericana y del Caribe contaba con salsa, merengue, bachata, reggae, indie-rock, electrónica y los demás géneros que disfrutan los Puertorriqueños. ISABELA TANGO FESTIVAL, CARLOS GARDEL EN ISABELA 25 ANIVERSARIO... Como parte de nuestro festival de tango, “Isabela Tango Festival 2010 - Al encuentro con Gardel”, en la conmemoración del 75º aniversario de la desaparición física de Gardel y en la celebración del 25º aniversario de la colocación del monumento a Gardel “El Gardel de Isabela”, en nuestra ciudad, hemos recibido un reconocimiento especial, que a continuación explico:
Peña del Tango, el Festival de Tango y el monumento “El Gardel de Isabela”, gracias al esfuerzo e interés del señor diputado, Doctor Alejandro García, de tan honroso cuerpo legislativo. El de la “tarja de bronce y la bandeja protocolar se cumplimentaron durante el festival. El de reconocimiento cultural al festival, se había pospuesto por asuntos de otros trabajos dentro de la legislatura bonaerense. Finalmente, el 1º de julio, fue debidamente aprobado. Es un gran honor para nosotros, los isabelinos, que ha nivel de un honroso cuerpo legislativo de otro país, en este caso, Argentina, se reconozca nuestra aportación cultural. Cleanest Business Challenge: Jobos Beach Reto Negocios Limpios: Jobos Beach
Rescate Playas Isabela (RPI) is creating a challenge for local businesses to go green and clean. The first of which will being with Jobos Beach, originally they wanted to include all businesses in Isabela, but have decided to start with a smaller community incentive and work up to the whole town. Depending on the success this concept could be introduced to neighboring towns. The business who proves to have the cleanest surroundings (front, back, beach and street sides) will be awarded the title: “CLEANEST BUSINESS” and will be featured in LA ISLA READER Oct/Nov Issue (keep in mind this will be the big Rip Curl Search Issue) along with any other offer RPI receives from other businesses who want to help the Cleanest Business Challenge cause. I would like to invite other businesses to contact RPI to donate incentives and to participate or to answer any questions regarding the CLEANEST BUSINESS CHANLLENGE.
Rescate Playas Isabela (RPI) planteó un reto a los negocios locales para mantener la limpieza a sus alrededores. El primero de estos será en la Playa Jobos, originalmente querían incluir todos los negocios de Isabela, pero se decidió empezar por una comunidad más pequeña y después llegar al resto del pueblo. Dependiendo del éxito que tenga este reto se podrá implementar el concepto en otros pueblos vecinos. El negocio que demuestre tener el entorno más limpio (a todo su alrededores, la playa y los lados de la calle) será premiado con el titulo: “NEGOCIO MÁS LIMPIO” y se llevará un feature de media página en la revista LA ISLA READER Edición Oct/Nov (ten en cuanta que éste será la revista para el Rip Curl Search) en conjunto con cualquier otro incentivo que negocios puedan ofrecer para ayudar la causa del Reto Negocios Limpios. Los Pescadores de la Villa del Ojo - AGUADILLA Text and Photo: James Nadal When one thinks of Crashboat; there is the pier, the perfect beach, and the colorful native fishing boats, the “yolas Aguadillanas.” These boats have been a constant fixture here since the original fishing families staked out a claim on the rocky cliffs, then the sand washed up after the pier construction, forming the beach. There used to be many boats lined along the shore, not so anymore. The Crashboat fishermen, Los Pescadores de la Villa del Ojo, are the last survivors of a defining tradition, which added much legend and lore to the allure of Aguadilla. (James Nadal will be elaborating on this touching story in a future issue).

Cuando uno piensa en Crashboat; está el muelle, la playa perfecta, y las yolas Aguadillanas coloridas. Estas yolas han sido un rasgo característico desde que las familias originales de pescadores se apoderaron de su tierra en el acantilado, después se acumuló la arena al construir el muelle, formando la playa. Antes habian muchos botes a lo largo de la orilla, ya no. Los pescadores de Crashboat conocidos como Los Pescadores de la Villa del Ojo, son los sobrevivientes de una tradición definitivo, el cual le produce una leyenda y un encanto a Aguadilla. NOMADAS Carr 110 Km 9.6 Aguadilla El propietario de Nómadas y yo teníamos un restaurante en San Juan y una noche después de un largo día de trabajo nos fuimos a un Bar de Karaoke. Estábamos hangeando, pasando la bien y charlando, cuando de repente me doy cuenta que estoy hablando solo. “A dónde se fue”? Cuando miro la tarima estaba él ¡cantando una canción de salsa! No solo cantaba, pero sonaba muy bien, hasta mejor que la original. Estaba realmente impresionado y nunca dejó de sorprenderme. Y su restaurante, Nómadas, no es la excepción. El transcurso del Restaurante Nómadas continua en una nueva ubicación, km 9.4 en la Carr 110, y mantiene su atmósfera de atractivo y calido de “bistro”. La frente de la casa han trabajado tantos años juntos que son más como familia que empleados y son muy atentos pero no hasta el punto

de ser sofocantes. Si te gusta platos pequeños sin mucho sabor, Nómadas no es para ti. Su estilo es grande, audaz y lleno de sabor. La mejor manera de describir el estilo de la comida sería Continental, Caribeña Americana. Hamburguesas jugosas, las costillas con la carne que cae del hueso, pescados súper frescos, ensaladas, pastas, cordero, churrascos, y Asian alitas, y por supuesto las delicias locales como tostones y arroz con habichuelas. Todo es riquísimo y no te irás con hambre. Nómadas también cuanta con una barra de diversas Cervezas y Vinos al igual que una selección amplia de licores. Termina la noche con una bebida y un cigarro y te iras muy contento a la casa. Estén atentos que pronto habrá un nuevo deck y cambios al menú. The owner of Nomadas and I used to have a restaurant in San Juan and one night after a very long day of work we went to a nearby Karaoke bar. We were hanging out having a good time talking shop when I realized I was talking to myself. “Where did he go?” I looked up on stage and found him singing a salsa song. Not only was he singing, but it sounded as good, if not better than the real song. I was impressed and he’s never stopped impressing me. His restaurant, Nomadas, is no exception. The Nomadas restaurant journey continues in a new location, km. 9.4 carretera 110 and keeps it`s bistro-like warm inviting atmosphere. The front of the house staff has been working together for so long that they are more like family than employees and they do a nice job of being attentive but not smothering their diners. If you like small, dainty plates of flavorless food then Nomadas is not for you.
Their style is big, bold, and full of flavor. Continental, Caribbean American cuisine would be the best way I could describe this delicious style of cooking. Juicy burgers, ribs with meat falling off the bones, super fresh fish, salads, pastas, lamb chops, steaks, and Asian style wings and of course local favorites like tostones and our beloved rice and beans . Everything is delicious and you are not going to leave hungry. Nomadas also has a full lineup of Beer and Wine as well as a nicely stocked liquor cabinet. Finish your night with an after dinner drink and cigar and go home very very happy. Watch out for up and coming developments like an outside deck and menu changes and let’s hope no one famous hears the owner singing salsa or we might have to share our Nomadas’s burger with the likes of Hector Lavoe or Celia Cruz.

The 80’s, I was involved in creating many large events engaging audience participation... EG: Where are you from? MF: I’m from the capitol of the Caribbean, the border town know as Miami, but my heart was born in Puerto Rico. My earliest memories are looking out the window of a plane and having an assault on my senses. The turquoise Caribbean Sea of Puerto Rico came into focus causing a lasting impression that bounces of my canvases, performances, and life today.
EG: What early influences did you have with art? MF: Smelling the turpentine in my grandfather’s art studio, mixing his palette and being exposed to art at a very young age sent me to a world filled with abstract fantasy.
EG: Talk about your art, and all its different stages. MF: In the 70’s, I lived in New York, Venice and Ibiza studying and creating art and beginning to do “Performance Art / Installation Happenings.” In Venice, I made my 1st large scale banners in a performance at

the world renowned Palazzo Grassi at the age of 22. The 80’s, I was involved in creating many large-scale events engaging audience participation such as working with over 3,000 children at the Miami International Bookfair in a 2 day event where they created over 1,000 banners and 3,000 bookcover. I also produced many eccentric opening events for the Miami Film Festival held at the prestigious Vizcaya palace, bringing in outrages props such as junk cars, urinals, refridgerators, motorcycle gangs, snake performers, painted human bodies, installation food art, and circus acts. At that time I also painted large scale abstract paintings and made large Public Art banners and worked as a Museum Educator for Miami Dade County Government’s Art in Public Places. The 90’s, I found myself creating paintings, photography and teaching full time in the public schools of Miami. Now during this time period of 2000 – I have fused my www.laislareader.com | 21
energies into creating permanent Public Art projects with over 1,000 children and teaching them Foundation Design Theories. The “Performance Art / Installations Happenings” that I experienced in the past now have enabled me to create conceptual art projects with these young students. Such as an Eco Art portico entrance to the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center on Key Biscayne, Fla. made out of over 1,000 paper towel rolls and living plants that lasted a week. EG: Connect one of your stages from the past, as it relates to the present and the future. Tell us about the genre- Happenings.
MF: Creating two dimensional and three dimensional artwork for an aesthetic purpose can bring happiness and beauty to the viewer. Engaging in participation and communal dialogue through conceptual “Performance Art/Installation Happenings” gives an artist the vehicle for social commentary. As an artist /art educator, I have the social responsibility to inspire my students and the general public on life’s magnificent bounty. Coming down on that plane as a child to Puerto Rico, I was able to see into my heart and look through that window to my dreams. I live now between Miami and Puerto Rico.

EG: Háblanos sobre su arte y las etapas diferentes. MF: En los 70’s, viví en Nueva York, Venecia e Ibiza, estudiando y creando arte y comenzando a elaborar los Performance Art/ Instillation Happenings. En Venecia realizé mi primer banner a gran escala en
el famoso Palazzo Grassi a los 22 años. En los 80’s estaba involucrada en el desarrollo de muchos eventos a gran escala llamando la participación de la audiencia. Por ejemplo, trabajando con más de 3.000 niños en la Feria Internacional de Libros en Miami, un evento de dos dias en el cual ellos crearon más de 1.000 banners y 3.000 tapas para libros. Ademas produje muchos eventos de apertura muy excéntricas para el Festival de Cine en Miami llevado acabo en el prestigioso palacio Vizcaya, incorporando accesorios extravagantes tales como autos de chatarras, orinales, refrigeradores, gangas de motocicletas, interpretes con culebras, cuerpos humanos pintados, instalaciones de arte comible y interpretes del circo. En los 90’s me encontraba elaborando pinturas, fotografía y como maestra, de jornada completa, en las escuelas publicas de Miami. Actualmente, durante este periodo del 2000 – He fusionado mis energías para
crear un proyecto permanente de Arte Publico involucrando más Imagen grande de 1.000 niños a los cuales les estoy enseñando la Teoría de la Izquierda : En La Calle Photo 2007 Fundación del Diseño. Los Performace Art/ Installation Happenings que experimenté en el pasado ahora me permiten crear proyectos de arte conceptual con estos estudiantes. Un de éstos fue la entrada pórtico compuesto de Eco Art en el Centro Natural de Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Biscayne en Key Biscayne, Florida elaborado con más de 1.000 rollos de papel toallas y plantas vivas, el cual duró una semana.

Conscious Pregnancy and Birth - Embarazo y Parto Conciente by Dr. Brooke Leason, ND
I would define consciousness as being truly present. It is the act of cultivating an awareness of the moment; of our thoughts, our actions, and of our intentions that may allow us to act from a place of respect and in a way direct our experiences with clarity and positive intention. Conscious pregnancy refers to this same concept translated into being clear on our intentions of conceiving a new life and the elements we wish to pass on to this new child. Bruce Lipton, author of Biology of Belief, literally speaks of the moment of conception and how DNA/ gene selection occurs in that moment and the impact of how this can influence an entire life. If this is true, then the concept of being conscious and clear about the reasons we are uniting to create a new life and doing so with love and pure feelings can be extremely powerful. Beyond emotional health, we can physically prepare for pregnancy by aspiring to be in our most healthy state possible before becoming pregnant. This can be achieved by implementing a proper balanced diet, refraining from any excesses including alcohol, sugar, etc. Establishing an exercise routine before you become pregnant makes it much easier to maintain during the pregnancy than to have to start from scratch. You may begin taking a good multivitamin with higher doses of folic acid and an omega-3 supplement. These days it is even recommended to complete a detoxification program before becoming pregnant, specifically removing any heavy metals from your system, since the fetus literally inherits your “toxic load” through the placenta. During your pregnancy maintenance of a balanced whole foods diet, ex-

ercise routine and supplementation is equally important. Additional to this, a loving and supportive community may add to this very exciting and happy experience, which can be directly reflected in the child’s emotional makeup. There are many different birth choices. The most important factor is that you feel safe to communicate your needs, questions, fears and desires with your caregiver. This may be an OB/GYN or a midwife. In Puerto Rico although it is less common, midwifery and home birth are available as a birth choice. Birth should be an empowering experience for the mother and all those involved. It is important that you educate yourself on your different options and communicate them clearly with your caregiver. If you choose to have a hospital birth I especially recommend hiring a doula for additional support and education. Mas allá de la salud mental, debemos prepáranos físicamente para el embarazo aspirando a estar lo más saludable posible antes de quedar embarazada. Esto puede ser alcanzado estableciendo una dieta balanceada apropiada, refrenándose de cualquier exceso incluyendo el alcohol, el azúcar, etc. Estableciendo una rutina de ejercicios antes de embarazarte hace mucho mas fácil mantenerlo durante el embarazo, en vez de empezar de cero. Debes comenzar a tomar una buena multi-vitamina conteniendo una dosis alta en acido fólico y un suplemento de omega-3. Actualmente, es
recomendable hacer un programa de desintoxicación completa antes de quedar embarazada, específicamente para sacar los metales pesados del sistema, ya que el fetos literalmente hereda las toxinas a través de la placenta. Durante el embarazo es muy importante mantener una dieta balanceada en comidas integras, una rutina de ejercicio y una suplementación adecuada. Además, una comunidad que apoya y ofrece amor puede sumar a esta experiencia alucinante y jubiloso, que puede ser reflejado directamente en la composición emocional de la criatura. Hay muchas opciones para parir. Lo mas importante es que te siente segura en comunicar tus necesidades, preguntas, temores y deseos con su cuidador, el cual puede ser un ginecólogo o una patera. Aunque no sea muy común en Puerto Rico, la obstetricia y el nacimiento en casa es una opción disponible para parir. El parto debe ser una experiencia de empoderamiento para la madre y todos aquellos envueltos. Es importante educarse en cuanto las distintas opciones que tienes disponibles y comunicar claramente con su cuidador. Si eliges tener un parto en el hospital realmente recomiendo que contrates una doula para educarte y tener un apoyo adicional en el momento de parir. LA BODEGUITA by Nasinne Campos Hi there! In this article I’ll be writing about one of my favorite grapes: Carmenere. If you love Merlot or Cabernet, you have to try this grape. It is considered one of the original six grapes from the Bordeaux region in France. Mostly grown in Chile, it was often confused for Merlot because when it was first brought to South America in the 19th century, they did not plant them in different areas of the vineyards. Because of this consumers could never be sure if what they were drinking was truly Carmenere or Merlot. To prevent further confusion, in 1996, growers started to plant each grape in separate areas of their vineyards. Now any Carmenere bottle bought after 1998 is truly Carmenere. In Europe Carmenere is also grown, but its mostly used for blending. When used for this purpose, the grape tends to have smokey, herbal and grassy tones. By itself, you will find some dark berry, plum and spice tones. The predominant flavors that come through are coffee, grilled meat, celery, cocoa, and soy sauce. Good food pairings would be: Red meats, BBQ, dark chocolate, asian foods, and stews. Saludos: En esta nota estaré escribiendo sobre una de mis uvas favoritas: el Carmenere. Si te encanta el Merlot o el Cabernet, tienes que probar esta uva. Es considerado una de las originales seis uvas de la región Bordeaux en Francia. La mayor cantidad es cosechada en Chile; y muchas veces ha sido confundido con el Merlot porque cuando fue llevado a Sur América en el siglo 19 no las sembraron en diferentes áreas de la viñera. Por lo tanto consumidores no podían estar seguro si estaban tomando un Carmenere o un Merlot. Para evitar más confusión, en 1996, los cosechadores empezaron a sembrar las uvas en áreas separadas de su viñera. Ahora, todas las botellas de Carmenere compradas después de 1998 son autenticas. En Europa también cosechan Carmenere, pero usualmente es usado para mezclar con otros vinos. Cuando es usado para éste propósito la uva tiende llevar tonos ahumados, de yerbas y de pastos. El Carmenere por sí solo posee tonos de bayas oscuras, ciruelas y especies. Los sabores predominantes son de café, carnes a la parilla, apio, cacao y salsa de soja. Maridajes: Carnes rojas, BBQ, chocolate amargo, comidas asiáticas y guisados.
