As an athlete you never think you will be injured. All athletes from the casual surfer to the professional boxer challenge their bodies in unique ways. The repetitive motions that are required for any sport predispose the athlete to injury. Every sport has repetitive motions i.e.: the perfect swing, or the correct tackle. These repetitive motions teach the body improper balance and decrease normal range of motion. Not only can you trust the owners of Cocina Creativa, they are two of the most talented chefs you can find. Materializar el alma humana através de la naturaleza EG: ¿Cómo te decidiste por la Pintura? AR: La pintura me permite transmitir emociones, conceptos e ideas mediante el color, la textura y las formas. Logro transformar un plano bidimensional en una ventana de posibilidades infinitas convirtiendo lo insignificante en un discurso visual que me permite comunicar el significado interno de las cosas. Por eso me decidí por la pintura, me encanta descubrir lo que hay detrás de cada ventana. EG: ¿Estudiaste o eres autodidacta? AR: Desde muy pequeña me interese por el arte. En la escuela dibujaba en cada papel que tuviera en mis manos. A los ocho años mis padre decidieron ponerme en clase formales de dibujo y pintura, por recomendación de una maestra. En 1991 comienzo mis estudios de bachillerato en La Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico en el Viejo San Juan realizando estudios en Pintura y luego una maestría en El Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y El Caribe en Estudios Puertorriqueños con una concentración en Arte. www.laislareader.com | 16
EG: ¿Crees que la Pintura y/o Pintores del Caribe son diferentes del resto en algún sentido? AR: Quizás en los colores y la manera de percibir la luz. El ambiente natural en que se desenvuelve un artista se refleja mediante una psicología interna del color. El arte es universal y el fin del artista es el mismo donde quiera, reflejar la sociedad en que viven. EG: ¿Cómo describes tu arte y lenguaje estético? AR: Expresión! Materializar el alma humana a través de la naturaleza. AR: Pues trato de no darle importancia a esos contratiempos, sólo me concentro en hacer mi labor como artista en esta sociedad. Estamos en el siglo 21 y gracias a artistas como Luisina Ordoñez, Luisa Géigel, María Luisa Penne del Castillo y Olga Albizu, hoy día la mujer ha logrado posicionarse en el arte consiguiendo el respeto de una sociedad donde el machismo y la división de géneros era muy fuerte.

EG: ¿De qué manera logras que lo espiritual participe de la obra? AR: Es parte de mi personalidad, soy muy espiritual Por esta razón me interesa mucho ver y estudiar las diferente maneras en que el ser humano busca llenar su espíritu vacío y escaso de significado. Hoy día vivimos en una sociedad donde todos intentan, desesperadamente, llenar ese vacío. Acuden a la religión, a cultos, filosofías, veneración de santos, la meditación, la oración, relaciones amorosas etc. Buscan identificarse con lo que mas le llene y de eso se trata, no importa cómo pero el fin es el mismo engrandecerse espiritualmente para poder ser buenas personas y aportar cosas positiva a una sociedad.

EG: ¿En tus pinturas se ve misticismo mezclado con lo ecológico, que nos podes contar sobre esto? AR: Amor al paisaje y a la vida misma. El agua, el aire, la vegetación, todo es vida. Existe una relación amorosa, erótica y sexual entre lo espiritual y lo natural. El instinto de proteger lo que nos pertenece desde nuestro primer respiro en la Tierra. El deseo de ser uno sólo en cuerpo y alma. El desenvolvernos en un medio ambiente que nos haga renacer cada
EG: ¿Quién es la mujer en tus cuadros? AR: Yo, reflejada como en un espejo en las personas las cuales pueda robar un poco de su historia para hacerlas mías. No importa que imagen pinte, el artista se autorretrata en una y cada una de su obra. El conciente e inconciente del artista esta plasmado en cada trazo y en cada idea conceptualizada y plasmada en el canvas.
EG: What made you decide to Paint? AR: By painting I am able to transmit emotions, concepts and ideas through colors, textures and shapes. Transforming a two-dimensional surface into a window of infinite possibilities while making the insignificant into a visual discourse, allows me to communicate the inner meanings of things. That is why I chose painting; I love to discover what is behind each window. EG: Did you learn through formal teachings or were you self-taught?
AR: Ever since I was a little girl I was interested in art. At school I would draw on every piece of paper I had in my hands. By recommendation of my teacher, at the age of eight, my parents decided to put me in formal drawing and painting classes. In 1991, I began taking courses towards my bachelor’s at La Escuela de Artes Plasticas de Puerto Rico in Viejo San Juan completing my degree in painting; and later I received my Masters at El Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe in Puerto Rican Studies with an emphasis on the Arts. EG: Do you feel that painting and/or painters from the Caribbean are different from the rest, to a certain degree? AR: Maybe in the colors and the perception of the light. The natural atmosphere in which an artist unravels is reflected through an inner psychology of color. Artists are universal and the goal of the artists is the same everywhere; reflecting the society in which they live.

EG: How would you describe your art and esthetic language? AR: Expression; materializing the human soul through nature! Internalizing the inner meaning of each image surrounding us in order to personify and create a romance between the artist (me) and everything that circles me. EG: How do you get your inspiration going? AR: I try to have goals and live with a purpose, acknowledging and valuing my life as well as those around me, loving nature and using it as a medium of inspiration and spiritualization. EG: What are some pros and cons, if any, of being a woman artist? AR: Well, I try not to pay attention to those setbacks of the past; I simply focus on doing my duty as an artist in this society. We are in the 21st century and thanks to artists like Luisina Ordoñez, Luisa Géigel, María Luisa Penne del Castillo y Olga Albizu, woman today have been able to position themselves in the art world and gain the respect of a society in which machismo and the separation on genders was very strong. EG: How do you allow for the spirituality of the piece to unveil? AR: It’s part of who I am. I’m a very spiritual person. That is why I am so interested in seeing and studying the different ways humans try to fill their empty spirits. Today we live in a society in where everyone is desperately trying to fill a void. People turn to religion, cults, philosophies, saints, mediation, prayer, sex, etc. They are trying to identify with whatever it is that fulfills them most and that is what it is all about. It doesn’t matter how, since the end result is always the same; growing in a spiritual manner in order to become better people and do positive things in one’s society.
EG: In your paintings mysticism is intertwined with the ecology, what can you tell us about this? AR: It is love for my surroundings and for life itself. The water, air, vegetation, everything is life. There is a loving, erotic, and sexual relationship between spirit and nature. Our instincts to protect what is ours starts with the first breath we take on this earth; the desire to be oneself in body and spirit. We have to immerse ourselves in an environment that allows us to be reborn each day. EG: Who is the woman in the paintings? AR: Me, like a reflection in a mirror of other people, whom I can steal a little of their stories to make them my own. It doesn’t matter what the image painted is, the artist always paints a self-portrait in each one of her works. The consciousness and subconsciousness of the artist is reflected in each stroke and in each conceptualized idea and portrayed on the canvas.

H
idden between valleys and mountain all throughout Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central you will find many Haciendas de Café, these will gladly open their doors to coffee lovers and explorers looking to marvel at one of Puerto Rico’s many wonders. The Cordillera Central, mountain ranges that cross through the center of the island, go from Las Marias-Maricao on the west to Aibonito-Cayey on the southeast side. The highest regions reach 4,000 plus feet. The best coffee on the island comes from the small farms located along La Cordillera in towns such as: Lares, Las Marias, Maricao, Utuado, Jayuya, Adjuntas and Ciales, but coffee plantations are spread throughout the Cordillera. We’re not quite certain exactly when the first seedlings of coffee made it to the shores of our island. Some claim it was in the early 1700’s when a French immigrant brought an Arabic variety. While other coffee historians believe that its origin dates back to post Columbus’ arrival by Spaniards who found the perfect climate and soil conditions in the high altitudes of the Cordillera Central in the late 1500’s or early 1600’s. Regardless of when it came the Europeans deemed Puerto Rican coffee as the Best in the world. Puertorican produced Arabic coffee, has

been shipped around the world since 1736. This tiny Island of approximately 119 by 39 miles (160 by 56 kilometers) was once the fourth largest coffee exporter in the world. But things have not been easy for the coffee haciendas, they have had to overcome many obstacles such as invasion, world economic depression and hurricanes yet we are still able to produce world-class coffee that can satisfy the most demanding connoisseurs. Café La Casona at Hacienda Palma Escrita is a small family owned farm run by Artemio and Maria Valentin, they opened their doors to us and took us through the whole process from branch to cup! Coffee has had a huge impact on the island; it is as rich in flavor as it is in history. I highly recommend taking a trip through the lush mountains and stopping at one of these Haciendas de Café where you can get a guided tour or just sit and sip an excellent cup of coffee, it will seem as if time stands still in the warm afternoon sun. Many of the Haciendas produce “gourmet” coffee, which can be bought at the plantation, in local grocery stores or online, so if you don’t make it to one of the Haciendas don’t forget to take some coffee home with you!

scondidas entre las montañas y los valles de la Cordillera Central de Puerto Rico, encontrarás muchas Haciendas de Café, las cuales alegremente abrirán sus puertas a los amantes del café y exploradores que buscan sorprenderse con las inagotables maravillas de Puerto Rico. La Cordillera Central, montañas que pasan por el centro de la Isla, van desde Las Marias-Maricao en el oeste hasta Aibonito-Cayey al sureste. Las regiones mas altas superan los 4,000 pies de altura. El mejor café de la Isla viene de las Haciendas pequeñas colocadas a través de La Cordillera en pueblos como Lares, Las Marias, Maricao, Utuado, Jayuya, Adjuntas y Ciales, y así sucesivamente el camino se encargará de llevarte por el paseo de las innumerables haciendas de café que brinde nuestra Isla. La fecha exacta en la que llegaron las primeras semillas de café a nuestras playas es debatible. Algunos dicen que fue en los principios de los 1700s cuando un inmigrante francés trajo la variedad Arabico. Otros historiadores del café creen que la fecha de origen data después de la llegada de Colón por españoles quienes encontraron las condiciones perfectas del clima y la tierra en las alturas de nuestra Cordillera Central a finales de los 1500s o principios de los 1600s. Sin tomar en cuenta cuando llego, los europeos estimaban al Café de Puerto Rico como la Mejor del mundo. Lo que sí se sabe con certeza es que Puerto Rico ha producido café Arabico desde el 1736 y éste ha sido exportado

Café La Casona en la Hacienda Palma Escrita es una plantación pequeña trabajada por su familia, los dueños son Artemio y Maria Valentín. Ellos nos abrieron sus puertas y nos demostraron el proceso entero de cosechar café desde la rama hasta la taza! El café ha tenido un impacto enorme en la isla. El sabor del café es tan rico como lo es la historia. Le recomiendo que vallan a dar un paseo por las montañas exuberantes y paren en una de las Haciendas de Café donde te darán un tour guiado o tan solo para tomarse un café deliciosos de Puerto Rico en donde el tiempo parece estar detenido entre el calor de las tardes. Muchas de las Haciendas producen café gourmet que puede ser comprado en las plantaciones, mercados locales, o por Internet, así que si no pudieron ir a una Hacienda no se olviden de llevarse un Café Hecho en Puerto Rico!

T
he west side of Puerto Rico is commonly known for its beautiful sunsets, sandy beaches and surf. However when the sun goes down, this area screams of music and nightlife making it one of the lost havens of true music culture on the island. Such was the case the night of October 3rd when Los Negros Vivos took the stage at Nomada’s and transformed the classy restaurant into the hottest venue for music. For old-schoolers, the ambiance and camaraderie was legendary and reminded them to old epic fallen places like The Longbranch who cemented the “Rock en Español” movement of the 90s. On the other hand, for the new breed it was a lesson in Rock and Roll while at the same time having a blast, jumping and dancing without worries nor problems. Right around 11pm, the band took the stage. A voice took to the mic and in a low tone suddenly said, “Who wants to dance SKA?” a bit of silence in between and... BOOM! Just like that, the intense sound of their solid brass section made them abruptly heard in the room causing everybody to instantly jump. Songs like “Cosas de Rude Boy” along with “Niño de Sangre Azul” from their first self titled album and “Bares y Alcohol” from their independent production Viviendo en otro lugar were the crowd-pleasers and drew the most reaction. It is safe to say that the band Los Negros Vivos is one of Puerto Rico’s finest live acts with over 10 years rocking the stages here in the island and in other parts of Latin America. Currently, they are working on a new album, hoping to capitalize on their live show success and create a new following as always, Bailando Ska!

l área noroeste de Puerto Rico es conocida por sus atardeceres hermosos, playas bellísimas y el surfing. Pero cuando baja el sol ésta área prende la música y la vida nocturna haciéndola una de los verdaderos refugios perdidos de la cultura musical en la isla. Este fue el caso de la noche del 3 de octubre cuando Los Negros Vivos se apoderaron del escenario en Nomada’s transformando el elegante restaurante en uno de los mejores lugares para escuchar música en vivo. Para aquellos de la vieja escuela el ambiente y camaradería les acordaba a los viejos tiempos en lugares caídos como el legendario Longbranch, el cual fundamentó el movimiento del Rock en Español en los 90s. Para los novatos fue una lección en Rock n’ Roll, pasándola bien, brincando y bailando sin problemas ni preocupaciones. Alrededor de las 11pm la banda tomó el escenario…de repente una voz dice: “Cuántos quieren bailar SKA”? Hubo un momento de silencio y…Boom! Así los sonidos intensos de los instrumentos de viento-metal abarcaron el lugar haciendolos brincar a todos. Canciones como “Cosas de Rude Boy” y “Niño de Sangre Azul” de su primer disco, cuyo titulo lleva nombre de la banda, al igual que “Bares y Alcohol” de su producción independiente Viviendo en otro lugar, fueron las favoritas del publico. Se puede decir que Los Negros Vivo son uno de los mejores grupos de música en vivo de Puerto Rico con más de 10 años rockeando en los escenarios de la isla y América Latina. Actualmente están creando un álbum nuevo capitalizando en el éxito de sus funciones en vivo para encontrar nuevos seguidores, como siempre…Bailando Ska!

In 1936 a military study pointed out that the island of Puerto Rico, a United States territory since 1898, was a “most valuable asset” as a logical extension of the air defense of the Panama Canal. By April of 1939 the site for a major air base was decided to be located in the northwest corner of Puerto Rico at Punta Borinquen. Work was begun immediately to acquire title to the needed land. More than 400 families were told to evacuate their homes within a two week period. By the 9th of September 2,711 acres of mostly sugar cane and Puerto Rico Sombrero palms had been purchased for $1,215,000. The first troops of the 65th Infantry arrived by train from Henry Barracks in Cayey via San Juan and construction began on permanent administrative buildings, housing and a hospital. Total costs for base construction came to $51,000,000 by 1945. Borinquen Field in early 1942 was home to several squadrons of bombers that patrolled the Caribbean Sea in search of Nazi submarines lurking to sink valuable cargo ships en route from South America to the United States. The airfield, then only 8000 feet long, served also as a refueling, repair and relaxation stop for all kinds of military aircraft and crews heading to North Africa or the European theaters of war via the southern route through Brazil. www.laislareader.com | 26
In 1946 the runway was extended to almost two miles. The “Cold War” brought a new purpose to the base, renamed in 1948 in honor of Brigadier General Howard Knox Ramey. In May of 1950 Ramey Air Force Base became a Strategic Air Command base flying high altitude photo-reconnaissance RB-36 airplanes. In the 1960s, faster, higher B-52s, carrying atomic weapons were on constant alert. The most serious period on the base was during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962: DEFCON 2. At its peak in about 1966 there were over 11,500 military and dependents living or working on the base. Newer inter-continental missiles and satellite technology ended the base’s military importance. In November 1973, Ramey base was officially closed. Most of its now 3,138 acres were declared surplus and handed over to various Puerto Rico government agencies.

The recently established BORINQUEN FIELD / RAMEY AFB MUSEUM is located on the second floor of Hangar 403 (Cargo Terminal) at the east end of Hangar Road on the former Air Force Base. It is open to the public every Saturday from 9AM to 4PM. There is no fee. The museum is a repository and place of safekeeping for documents, photos, historical items and remembrances of Borinquen Field/Ramey AFB as it existed between 1939 and 1973. It serves also to promote the historical significance as well as to educate the public about the original role and function as a strategic air base during WWII and the important role it played during the height of the Cold War. The museum provides material for research and is an educational center dealing with the history of the base and other projects related to aviation history.

Borinquen Field en los principios de 1942 era casa para varios escuadrillas de bombarderos que patrullaron el mar del Caribe en busca de los submarinos Nazis que estaban al acecho para hundir buques de carga valiosos en el camino de Sudamérica a los Estados Unidos. El campo de aviación, en ese entonces solo media 800 pies de largo, sirvió
también como reaprovisionamiento, reparación y relajación para todas clases de aviones militares y de equipos quienes se dirigían a África del Norte o a las escenas de guerra europeas vía la ruta meridional a través del Brasil. En 1946 la pista fue extendida a casi dos millas. La “Guerra Fría” trajo un nuevo propósito a la base, renombrada en 1948 en honor al General de Brigada Howard Knox Ramey. En mayo de 1950 la base de fuerzas aéreas Ramey se convirtió en una base estratégico de comando de aire en el que volaban los reconocimientos aéreos de muy altos niveles, los aviones RB-36. En los años del 1960, B-52s, los cuales eran más rápidos y más altos, llevaban las armas atómicas y estaban en alerta constantemente. El período más serio en la base fue durante la crisis del misil cubano en 1962: DEFCON 2. En su pico, cerca de 1966 había mas de 11.500 militares y dependientes que vivían o que trabajaban en la base. La tecnología basada en los satélites y nuevos misiles intercontinentales finalizó la importancia militar de la base. En noviembre de 1973, base Ramey cerró oficialmente. La mayor parte de sus ahora 3.138 acres fueron declarado como exceso y entregados a varias agencias del gobierno de Puerto Rico.

Promueve la historia significativa y educa al publico en cual fue el papel y función original de la base como una base aéreo estratégico durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el papel importantísimo que desempeñó durante el punto álgido de la Guerra Fría.
