Delicious and Unique Margaritas & Authentic Mexican Cuisine in the Caribbean I recently had the opportunity to stop in Tuluum and try an assortment of margaritas and food. Tuluum is located near Jobos Beach on PR-4466 Km 1.2. Tuluum is a festively decorated open-air bar& restaurant that takes full advantage of the warm salty ocean breezes. specializing in authentic Mexican cuisine. It’s a fun and funky mix of Mexican and Caribbean décor, specializing in authentic Mexican cuisine. We started the evening off in the bar where we got to try a few of their delightful margaritas; I’d been hearing about these from locals. The first one I tried was their newest flavor, ginger. All of their margaritas are made with fresh pressed juices and tequila (of course!). The fresh juices give the margaritas a bold and exotic taste that is like no other margarita I’ve ever tasted. I’m from San Diego and have spent a lot of time in Mexico, so let’s say, I’ve tried a few margaritas in my day! I ordered mine on the rocks instead of salt on the rim, they added cinnamon and sugar and it was amazing! The house tequila is ‘El Jimador’, the number one selling tequila in Mexico. Next up was the Cucumber Margarita; it was a mixture of salty, sweet and almost tangy. This margarita was very refreshing and the rim was lined with cayenne and salt. There are several other exotic flavors available, try them all and see what you like best! We ordered a few and shared so we could sample more flavors. When moved onto food, I tried the soup of the day, Chicken Tortilla, which is one of my favorite Mexican dishes. I have tried numerous samples and versions of this type of soup at other restaurants;this was one of the best I’ve had. It was rich, tangy and really hearty. Next up was Queso Fundido, equally as delicious, especially with sausage (chorizo). For my main course I chose their hueraches – a fried corn dough that is famous in Mexico City. I had the De Alambre (Steak) hueraches, which come with bacon onion and green peppers. My mouth is watering just thinking about them! The fried corn dough is yummy – and you can’t go wrong with bacon. The portions were large, the service was great, and the staff is friendly. Stop in to try one of their legendary margaritas and stay for an unparalleled dining experience…a little taste of Mexico, right here on our Caribbean Island.

ARLEYWINE STYLE ALE Every time someone walks into The Beer Box and asks me “What’s your favorite beer style?” the answer is easy: Barley wines. So what are Barley wines? Are they really a beer/wine hybrid or is it just a name? Well, here are some answers… Barley wines are strong ales of British origin. Although the term has been used as far back as Ancient Greece (a hop-less beer back then, apparently) and later known as a drink for aristocrats and upper social classes as they desired stronger ales. These strong ales are usually full-bodied, dark red, brown or copper in color, with alcohol by volume usually over 10%. Aroma and hop bitterness depends on the beer’s origin: American Barley wines tend to be hoppier and bitter; while, English Barley wines are maltier and sweeter. In America, the first beer to be marketed as “Barley wine” was Anchor Brewing Company’s “Old Foghorn Barleywine-style” Ale in 1976. The use of the word “wine” on the style reflects the beers strength and makes reference to the alcohol percentage of wines, but Barley wines do not contain grapes and are made strictly from grain. Due to their strength and robustness, Barley wines can be aged for many years (even decades) and the style is one of the few beer styles that are used in “vertical tastings” (tasting vintage bottles in a yearly order), which is usually only reserved for wine. VARIATIONS There are two main variations of Barley wines: Wheat wines and Old Ales. Wheat wines were developed in the 1980’s in America. They are basically a big, strong ale but made from at least 50% wheat in the malt bill. Of course, American breweries tend to use large amounts of hops to counter the big malt/wheat profile. Old Ales are the bigger and stronger brothers of English Mild Ales. Old Ales are aged, bottle-conditioned beers which are sometimes tart or sour due to the use of Brettanomyces on an extended secondary fermentation or barrel aging.

4 ACES BAR, Aguada

¿Cuales son los vinos de cebada? ¿Son realmente hibrido de cerveza y vino? Bueno aquí tienes unas respuestas…

Martes/Tues: Happy Hours Corona Extra 12 oz. $1.50, Shots de Tequila Jose Cuervo $1.00, Don Q Cristal & Don Q Limón 14 oz. $3.00 Live DJ’s Viernes: Medalla Light 12 oz $1.50 Bacardi & Bacardi Flavors 14 oz $3.00 Sábado: “Cocktail Night” Bacardi Mojitos, Margaritas, Straberry Margaritas, Apple Martinis, Cosmopolitan, Long Island, all $ 4.00 Happy Hours Medalla Light 12oz $2.00 Domingo: Henieken & Henieken Premuimn Light 12 oz $2.00

IN PUERTO RICO

Try these Barley wines and Old Ales currently available (in super limited quantities) in Puerto Rico:

www.ikolsantiago.bandcamp.com Underground rap and Hip Hop on the island has been through many changes. From the raids by police to music stores in the mid 1990’s to confiscate underground music mix tapes due to the political and social outrage toward the often violent a pornographic lyrics, to the commercialism of the sound of a genre that often blurs the lines between art and reality. Iguacas (2013) by Ikol Santiago, presents a refreshing departure from the underground music scene into a foray of introspective ballads that define his solid MC skills and establish his presence as an emerging artist. His soulful lyrics have captivated a loyal audience throughout Puerto Rico, United States and Latin America. Ikol’s debut album and subsequent appearances have received good reception locally and in Latin America. His fans in Mexico have shown extraordinary respect

and loyalty for his music. LaIslaReader: What makes your music different? Ikol Santiago: I’m always conscious of making honest music and maybe that separates me from some of the things that are done in the genre. LIR:What artists influence you to write your music? IS: My music is influenced by African American rap of the early 90’s. A Tribe Called Quest, Steel Pulse, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, Cultura Profética, J Dilla, Velcro, SieteNueve, Los Petardos and The Roots.... to mention a few. My "muse" as they say comes with the beats that are sent by the producers and depending on the feeling of the beat is how I flow with my lyrics… I try not to address a singlar audience when writing songs.... but rather create a rogue wave that will grip all listeners without masking strategies and mechanisms. LIR: How would you describe the

direction of your music? IS: I would describe rap/hip-hop a genre that allows both the MC and the producer/beatmaker create infinite possibilities. Its rooted in traditional rhythms but gives space to experiment musically. LIR: What are your future plans? IS: My plans in the future will always involve traveling and experiencing other cultures. Currently I want to make a second video for IGUACAS, then I’m going to release a free 7 song EP with a more relaxed vibe and less personal than IGUACAS.

QUALITY CRAFTWORK SINCE 1972

Jaime Rosa is an exceptionally talented artist residing in Ponce. He currently creates paintings that are born deep within the visceral depths of human experience. These works plunge the viewer through and around the intensity of such an encounter with the abyss and towards the possibility of renewal. The cycles of creation/destruction, life/death, fear/love, and beginning/end contrasting with each other in a melodic symphony of light and darkness leads one through a maze of drama, illusion, and sensations that evoke many of our most fundamental and core issues. Life and consciousness upheld mainly through the certainty of realistic and elusive dreams glowing, mirroring, and feeling.

His most recent solo show was in February at the Humanities Department Gallery of the University of P.R. in Mayaguez. I had the chance to get up close to his recent work and noticed slight influences of several greats such as Goya, Caravaggio, and Velazquez, also maybe a bit of Munch, and Freud. Jaime stated in an interview from the solo show, “... many of my fears and concerns are conveyed in the paintings of this exhibition...from religion to inquiries regarding life and death.”

“For me life is fragile and I reflect that human fragility in a symbolic way in my work. For example one might see a beautiful pomegranate fruit painting at first sight but in reality I am representing a sort of dismembered body. My creative process is one based on my life and experiences and this tied to the discipline of taking the paint brushes in hand on a daily basis.”

“I work various themes at the same time, but something that ties them together is the fragility of human life with regards to the theme of death. I always had the inclination towards art, but it wasn't till I experienced firsthand the violent death of my sister that my work really started. I let go of the life that I had and started the life that I wanted when I took note and perceived the vulnerability that we all share.”

“During the times when my current mental state is not in the best disposition to create, I look for some sort of self motivation through films, documentaries, biographies, or reading.” “There is always the opportunity to add more to a painting and we can say that I add the 'finis' to the work when it accomplishes the expression of the sensibility of the moment through its qualities. The textures, the brushstrokes charged with pigments that at times are tight and at others are loose, thus letting the eye finish the 'storyline' are some of the elements that make my work unique or persuasive. In addition, I also like the use of spaces, the simplicity of a lone figure, and the drama. These are some of the things that I can mention.” As a message to present day youth (and I believe it also applies to anyone else) who are thinking about becoming artists, Jaime had this to say from the interview at his show: “If you want to be an artist you will have to fill yourself with faith, because this is difficult, but if you are born with the sensibility, there is no way you can make it run away. You can try to work at other things, but sooner or later if you're going to be an artist you won't be able to escape it.” Jaime is currently a professor of Bellas Artes at the Pontificie Universidad Catolica in Ponce.
