Dermochelys coriacea seeks isolated beaches for laying its eggs. Through our monitoring program, we have been able to increase hatching success to 89%, surpassing the average of 65% on other beaches that also have good conditions for nesting.

Trust is proud to be one of the few areas where the Harlequin’s habitat is guaranteed protection. We also believe that we have the largest population of this endangered butterfly in Puerto Rico.

While our bird inventory stands at 65 species, we are certain that number will grow as we survey and annotate our vibrant bird population. The Puerto Rican Woodpecker, Bananaquit and Stripe-Headed Tanager are among the birds observed in Quebrada El Toro and young secondary forest. Grey Kingbird, Mockingbird and several species of finch can be sighted in pastures and areas with less vegetation, while the Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret and a wide variety of other shorebirds live at El Pastillo Beach and the rocky promontories. The cliffs of Quebradillas and Isabela are also the main nesting habitat for the White-Tailed Tropicbirds. In February 2013, we sighted an endangered Yellow-Shouldered Blackbird. We hope our next inventory confirms this species as a resident.

The butterfly is the most charismatic creature living at the Trust. Our field inventories have identified nearly 30 species of butterflies, including the endangered Harlequin, Atlantea tulita. We have observed the Harlequin laying eggs in its only host plant, commonly known as Eva Pins. The

business; her family owns the famous Rincon restaurant, Villa Cofressi. Rita had a clear vision of what she wanted for Cowboys. The décor feels like you’re at a BBQ joint in the heart of Texas. There are dozen’s of clever hand painted signs with fun slogans and messages hung around the restaurant. Cowboy’s caters to families and has ample seating for larger groups of people. Located about 1 mile off of Carr. 115 in Rincon; Cowboy’s lives up to it’s name in every way. Cowboy’s is an open-air, ranch-style restaurant located among pastures of rolling green hills; these pastures are home to a few horses, some cattle, and lot’s of mango trees Cowboy’s has ample parking and lots of open, grass filled space for children to play and run-around. The property also has a small arena with a pony, offering complimentary pony & horse rides for guests.

With a name like “Cowboy’s” you know you’re in for some great BBQ! Cowboy‘s specialty is their ribs, which are grilled on the restaurants’ open-flame, wood-burning grill. Cowboys’, uses only mango tree wood for their grill, which gives everything a nice smokey flavor, with a slight hint of the tropics. The ribs were juicy and tender; served with a delicious, sweet and tangy sauce- that you can

only find at Cowboys! For side dishes, I tried the grilled sweet potato that came with butter and cinnamon. Yummy! The Arroz mamposteao con cilantrillo y amarillitos were also delicious as they were flavored with a rich smokey flavor and sweet plantains. The service was excellent and parking was very easy. The Mojitos were incredible; I loved the coconut one! Cowboys is a great place to go for a unique and memorable dining experience, with great food and drinks. Opened up just about 6 months ago, the owner/creator of Cowboys, Rita Carrero has spent her entire life in the restaurant

Situado una milla de la Carr. 115 en Rincón; Cowboy’s logra vivir su nombre en todos los sentidos. Cowboy’s es un restaurante de estilo rancho al aire libre situado entre praderas de colinas verdes; estos pastos son el hogar de algunos caballos, algo de ganado y muchos árboles de mango. Cowboy’s tiene un amplio estacionamiento y mucho espacio abierto con grama para que los niños jueguen y corran alrededor. La propiedad también cuenta con un pequeño pony y ofrecen paseos gratuitos en el pony o el caballo a los clientes. Hace apenas 6 meses que abre sus puertas. La propietaria/creadora de Cowboy’s, Rita Caro ha pasado toda su vida en el negocio de los restaurantes. Su familia es propietaria del famoso restaurante en Rincón, La Ana de Villa Cofresi. Rita tenía una visión clara de lo que quería para Cowboy’s. La decoración se siente como si estuvieras

en una barbacoa justo en el corazón de Texas. Hay muchos letreros pintados a mano con lemas y mensajes divertidos colgado alrededor del restaurante. Cowboy’s es un restaurante familiar y cuenta con amplios asientos para grupos grandes. Con un nombre como “Cowboy's", de seguro que la barbacoa va ser deliciosa! La especialidad de Cowboys’ son sus costillas a la parrilla a llama abierta con leña. Cowboy’s utiliza sólo la madera de árboles de mango para su parrilla, lo que le da agradable sabor ahumado, con un toque tropical. Las costillas estaban jugosas y tiernas; servidas con una deliciosa, dulce y picante salsa, que sólo se puede encontrar en el Cowboy’s! Los acompañantes que probé fue la batata asada con mante-

quilla y canela. Yummy! El Arroz mamposteao con cilantrillo y amarillitos también eran deliciosos. Es un Plato muy sabroso con un rico sabor ahumado El servicio era excelente y fue muy fácil estacionarse. Los mojitos estaban increíbles; me encantó el de coco! Cowboy’s es un gran lugar para ir y tener una experiencia gastronómica única e inolvidable, con buena comida y bebidas. Smoking rolled tobacco leaves began in the Americas hundreds of years ago and was introduced to Europe after Christopher Columbus' return from his first voyage in 1492. The word cigar originated from the Spanish cigarro, which in turn probably derives from sikar- the term for smoking used by the Maya. In Guatemala, a ceramic pot dating back to the tenth century features a Mayan smoking tobacco leaves tied together with a string. The English word came into general use in 1730. In a cigarette, the tobacco is chopped, treated and packaged by machines inside of paper wrappers. Cigars are made up of aged and cured whole tobacco leaves. Cigar manufacturing is a caribbean tradition and premium cigars continue to be hand rolled in a few tabacaleras in Puerto Rico. The Caribbean islands climate is perfect for growing tobacco. Cigars are made from full cured tobacco leaves, from bottom to top, thre leaves are named - volado, seco, viso, ligero and corona. Ligero leaves are at the top of the plant and are considered the strongest and most flavorful due to their direct exposure to sunlight. Ligero plays an important part in a cigar blend’s flavor. Due to the thick nature of this leaf, it is normally placed in the center of a cigar so that the surrounding filler can help it burn properly. A binder leaf is used to keep filler leaves together and gives a cigar its shape, after being pressed in a mold. The flavor and strength of the leaf become more subtle the lower you go in the primings. Tobacco leaves are harvested and aged using a process that combines the use of heat and shade to cure the leaves. The process takes between 25 and 45 days and varies substantially based upon climatic conditions and storage area of the harvested tobacco. The curing process is different based upon the type of tobacco and the desired color of the leaf. Next the tobacco is fermented under conditions designed to help the leaf dry slowly. Temperature and humidity are

controlled to ensure that the leaf continues to f e r m e n t properly. With proper care, leaves can be aged up to 50 years. This is where the flavor, burning and aroma are developed in the leaf. Puffing a cigar is about enjoying flavors. Combining one with port, cognac, bourbon or scotch, or red wine can bring out the flavor in a cigar. An India Pale Ale is also good companion for a cigar- which can overpower the flavor of many beers. I’ll have mine with a Martini.

Otra hoja de apegamento se utiliza para mantener las hojas de relleno juntos y después de ser presionado en un molde, le da al cigarro su forma. El sabor y la fuerza de las hojas se hacen más sutiles cuando vas disminuyendo en los pisos foliares. Las hojas de tabaco se cosechan y secan usando un proceso que combina el uso de calor y la sombra para madurar las hojas. El proceso dura entre 25 y 45 días, y varía en aplicación por las condiciones climáticas y la zona de almacenamiento del tabaco cosechado. El proceso del añejo es diferente según la hoja, el color deseado y el uso final del tabaco. A continuación, el tabaco se fermenta bajo condiciones diseñadas para ayudar a la hoja secar lentamente. La temperatura y la humedad se controlan para asegurar una fermentación propia. Con el ambiente adecuado pueden guardarse hasta 50 años. process is born from a preconceived idea, the study of compositional and chromatic possibilities, and the 'labor' of capturing or projecting the idea onto a 'support' by utilizing the proper pigments and materials. I mainly use mixed media and textural experimentation is one of my main processes

as a whole. From my first drawing to the most recent encounter between an idea and the blank canvas, or a note on a piece of paper. As an artist my function and purpose is to create and communicate about a theme or idea and spread it. My interest is in transmitting. My goals are not necessarily waiting for my art to speak about me. The presence of the individual in urban landscapes and city environments has become a recurrent theme in my paintings, although I have worked with a multiplicity of themes. Loneliness and desolation are also characterized in my work.” One can almost discern a certain subtle homage to the isolation felt in De Chiricos' work, the textures of Antoni Tapies, and in certain aspects to some cityscapes of the late Puerto Rican artists Tufiño, Ramon Frade, and Jose R. Oliver. “At a young age I would have fun drawing stuff, but it was during my college years at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez that I realized and decided that art and music were my motivation for existence. I abandoned the engineering and management careers and dived into the humanities at the Rio Piedras Campus. In spite of the criticism, and against all forecasts I've been involved and dedicated for over two decades to art and related fields which translates into full satisfaction.”

The work of Emilio “Milo” Arraiza is replete with a language that vociferates his process of keen and ponderous observation – the kind where you notice the slow pace, the dark angle, the deserted spot, the isolated man. The reflection of an unfriendly city, uncaring yet beautiful, enticing yet vengeful, full of unspoken dreams, spins the observer through a constantly stunning contrast between humanity and the lack thereof, in the pale and sometimes tragic urban environment. Having been in direct contact with this artist for almost a decade, I've noticed the progression of his symbolism towards a vision of aversion to the cold fractured concrete while concurrently expressing its perceived and inherent seduction. For Emilio “...life is a biological process added to a cumulus of experiences...” “...The individual gravitates in a cycle of opposites continuously. Life creates physical and mental weights and counterbalances that practically forces one to produce tangible, moral, and ideologic paintings. My creative www.laislareaderpr.com | 18

when working a painting.” “I maintain inspiration by observing, reading, and conjugating ideas continuously. The creative process can be unbound from the creation of a work. Inspiration exists at all times. Developing the idea is probably the most maddening part of the process... the technical aspect. In general, if I succeed in maintaining the original idea I then conclude the technical process, in other words I consider the work complete, although on occasions the objective or idea is not totally reached and I might either abandon it or transform it into something else. I think that creative processes are dynamic and the works of art change, evolve and they add on to other works and truly form the oeuvre of the artist. They are small parts of the whole.” When asked what makes his work unique or persuasive Milo states: “It would be easy to respond that my signature is the distinction in my work because at the moment I'm not trying to create a language or palette that I can be identified with. I view my work

El reflejo de una cuidad antipática, indiferente pero bella, tentadora y vengativa, llena de sueños silenciosos, baila al observador a través de un constante contraste turbador - entre lo fraterno y lo inhumano, en un ambiente urbano pálido y aveces trágico Estando en contacto directo con este artista por mas de una década, he notado la progresión de su simbolismo hacia una visión de aversión al frío y fracturado concreto mientras concurrentemente expresa la seducción percibida e inherente de la ciudad. Para Emilio “...la vida es un proceso biológico sumado a un cumulo de experiencias...” “El individuo gravita en un ciclo de opuestos continuamente. La vida crea pesos y contrapesos físicos y mentales que prácticamente obligan a producir obras tangibles, morales, e ideológicas. Mi proceso creativo nace de una idea preconcebida, el estudio de posibilidades compositivas y cromáticas y el oficio de plasmar esa idea sobre un soporte, mediante la mezcla de pigmentos propios. Utilizo mayormente el medio mixto y la experimentación textural predomina en el proceso de realizar un trabajo plástico” “Mantengo la inspiración observando, leyendo y conjugando ideas continuamente. El proceso creativo puede desligarse de la manufactura de un trabajo. La inspiración existe siempre. El desarrollar la idea tal vez es la etapa engorrosa del proceso...la parte técnica. Por lo general, si logro ceñirme a la idea original termino con el proceso técnico aunque en ocasiones podría ocurrir que ese producto no se alcanza totalmente y se abandona o se transforma en otra cosa. Pienso que los procesos creativos son dinámicos y las piezas de arte cambian y se suman unas a otras formando en si la obra de un artista. Son pequeñas partes de un todo.”

Cuando se le pregunta a Milo que elementos considera hacen su obra única o persuasiva declara: “Seria fácil responder que mi firma es el distintivo de mi propuesta plástica porque no prescribo crear un lenguaje o paleta que me identifique de inmediato. Mi trabajo lo visualizo como un todo. Desde el primer dibujo hasta el ultimo enfrentamiento de una idea sobre el blanco de lienzo o un apunte en un papelito. Soy un artista y mi función es crear y hablar sobre algún tema y difundirlo. Mi interés es transmitir. No esta entre mis metas esperar que mi obra hable sobre mi. La presencia del individuo en entornos y paisajes citadinos se ha ido convirtiendo en un tema recurrente en mi propuesta plástica aunque he trabajado multiplicidad de temas. La soledad o la desolación también caracterizan mi propuesta. Se puede tal vez discernir cierto homenaje sutil hacia el aislamiento que se siente en las obras de De Chirico, las

texturas de Antoni Tapies, y en instancias a ciertos aspectos de algunos paisajes urbanos de los fenecidos artistas puertorriqueños Tufiño, Ramon Frade, y Jose R. Oliver. “A temprana edad me entretenía dibujando pero fue en la universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez que decidí que tanto el arte y la música eran mi motivación para existir, abandonando la carrera de ingeniería y gerencia para zambullirme en las humanidades en el campus riopedrense. A pesar de las criticas y contra todo pronostico llevo mas de dos décadas dedicado al arte y ramas relacionadas lo cual se traduce en satisfacción plena.” Emilio actualmente exhibe en Nueva York y esta en el proceso de abrir un espacio dedicado al arte en San Juan. Music you can move to… Sounds like The Cure vs. Jack White at a beach party. Former Astronauts is an indie rock band from Aguadilla, PR. The vintage, underproduced,reverberated - garage band sound is mature beyond their years. Three childhood friends with the love for music. I was able to catch up with Adrian Kayvin- writer, singer, guitar player of Former Astronauts to ask a few questions about the band. LaIslaReader - What influenced your sound? AdrianKayvin- “We started playing in the garage, we had very little equipment and I had to scream over the amps and drums, I think the vocals and reverb drenched sound was formed by the equipment we had. But what influenced me the most are the bands of the 50ʼs like Frank Sinatra, Francoise Hardy. Also 60ʼs and 70ʼs music.” LIR - The group went on to win a band showcase under the moniker Heavy Smiles, which landed them a deal for a music video. Was that a turning point for the group? AK - “Yes. Thats when we decided to take it more seriously (changing their name to Former Astronauts)…were doing our own things right now but all of us are committed to making this last.” LIR- LIR - Do you have a favorite place to write music?

AK - “At the beach. The sounds of the beach, I even put them on at home to get the vibe for writing music.” LIR - Could you describe your sound in three words? AK - “Emotional, energetic….. and the feeling of being in a cave!” LIR - Any influential moments in life that inspired you to be a musician? AK - “Me and Moises flew to New York to see Tokyo Police Club. We were so young we had to get our moms to take us. But when I got in there and heard them, I knew if they could do it we could too.“

LIR - Do you have a mentor or person who inspires you? AK - “Dean Martin, that style… and recently, Conor Oberst of Brighteyes, my acoustic project Cardigan Academy is similar to what he is doing.” LIR - What are you listening to now? AK - “ Iʼm listening to this local band a lot - Maono. Also The Cure, Bad Bad Hats, Brighteyes, to name a few.” Their first studio release, the five track plus bonus - Uplifting Downers, is set for release on the 24th of July. Available on Amazon and Spotify June 22, 2014. Subsequent tour dates for Metro area to be announced.

AdrianKayvin - “Empezamos tocando en el garaje, teníamos muy poco equipo y tuve que gritar sobre los amperios y los tambores, creo que la voz y la reverberación del sonido empapado fue formado por el equipo que teníamos. Pero lo que más me influyó en la mayoría, son las bandas de los años 50ʼs como Frank Sinatra y Francoise Hardy. Además de los 60ʼs y la música de los años 70ʼs. “ LIR - El grupo llegó a ganar una competencia de banda bajo el nombre de Heavy Smiles, lo que les consiguió contrato para un video musical. ¿Eso fue un punto de inflexión para el grupo? AK - “Sí. Eso es cuando nos decidimos a tomar más en serio (y lo cual inició el cambio de su nombre a Former Astronauts)...estamos haciendo nuestras propias cosas ahora mismo, pero todos estamos comprometidos".

AK - "Yo y Moises viajamos a NewYork para ver a Tokyo Police Club. Éramos tan jóvenes que nuestras madres nos tuvieron que acompañar. Cuando llegué allí y los escuché ví que si ellos podían hacerlo, nosotros podíamos también. " LIR - ¿Tiene un mentor o una persona que te inspira? Fresh Picked greens are produced in a hydroponic greenhouse, an agricultural method that is growing rapidly on the island. Each week new seeds are planted in a special material and, once sprouted, are transferred to PVC tubes that are designed to keep them watered until they are harvested 16 days later. Hydroponic systems use

far less water, as it is recycled through the system, and require no soil. The greens are pesticide-free and grown in several varieties to be mixed by hand. La Tierra Prometida has been a leader in the hydroponics movement in Puerto Rico and are now in the process of incorporating another innovative practice – Aquaponics. Like hydroponics, it recycles water through the growing system, but also incorporates fish that live in the water which provide important nutrients to the plants as part of the cycle. The Aquaponics system, expected to see its first crops in October 2014, is a partnership with Cosecha Encantada, a private entity with an interest in developing economic opportunities in low-income communities. Production will include sweet peppers, leafy greens such as Swiss chard, and possibly tomatoes.
