Spotlight on Local | Businesses ChuckAlek jumpstarts 2015 with Brewing and Business award By JESSICA MENDEL Did you know that there are 96 operating brew houses in San Diego County? In that list, the only one in Ramona is ChuckAlek Independent Brewers. Marta Jankowska and Grant Fraley, the CEO and head brewer, respectively, are the founders who named the brewery after their grandfathers. During San Diego Beer Week in November, ChuckAlek Independent Brewers received the Samuel Adams 2015 Brewing and Business Experienceship award from Boston Beer Company. This award provides the recipient with a mentorship from the brewers of Boston Beer Company. Best known for the Samuel Adams beer series, Boston Beer Company invests in brewers and entrepreneurs in the beer industry who have talent and passion for making good beer. Out of numerous applicants, ChuckAlek was chosen to not
only receive mentorship but also a $10,000 microloan, which Jankowska and Fraley agree will help them run their new business more smoothly. The microloan was secured through Accion :HU +PLNV H UVUWYVÄ[ organization that aims to WYV]PKL ÄUHUJPHS TLHUZ to small businesses. State Sen. Ramona is among communities in District 38, which Anderson represents. “ChuckAlek Independent Brewers is an incredible local company that is a great ambassador for Ramona to the rest of the country," said Anderson. North Korea: 'You can’t publish this column' "I’ve been planning my New Year’s column since last January. It provides a marketing plan for North Korea, including publicity, a new website, and a dandy free vacation sweepstakes. By implementing my plan, North Korea’s image and revenues are sure to achieve three years of guaranteed marketing success. Of course, feeding their people and a few sessions on a shrink’s couch probably wouldn’t hurt either. Apparently, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was irritated by my suggesting his
country is seen as anything less than perfect. Being offended, he had his team of troglodytes hack my cell phone. He’s also issued a public threat to attack anyone who reads my column. Therefore, I’ve followed Sony’s lead with "The Interview," and am canceling my column for this week. I’m glad this all happened. When "Les Miserables" was banned by the Pope in 1862, sales went through the roof. Ditto works by Descartes, Voltaire, Casanova and dozens of others.
I expect President Obama to soon declare I made a mistake by pulling the column. And Republican Party Chair Reince Priebus will email his millions of donors urging them to read the column to demonstrate to North Korea that we won’t be bullied in our choice of reading matter. Now the question: Will this particular column attract its own cult following? 0 ÄN\YL I` MVSSV^PUN :Vny’s model, 96 percent of Americans should soon declare interest in reading my
work. And while there’s been a theory that the activities coming out of Pyongyang were a failed Sony publicity stunt, I disagree. However, Kim, the rascal, did Sony a huge favor. By making "The Interview" a forbidden delight, he’s turned a (probably) mediocre release into the MUST SEE MOVIE of 2014. Your business may also ILULÄ[ MYVT [OPZ YHYL VWWVYtunity. If you manufacture anything, odds are excellent you have something Kim won’t like. And the only reason he
hasn’t called for your eradication is because he doesn’t yet know about it. So put the world’s bestknown lunatic to work for you by sending him samples or literature about your product line. His address is Choson’gul 55, Pyongyang, North Korea 48458. Will upsetting Kim help your potential sales? Who can say? Then again, look at the visibility it’s generated for Sony. With that said, I wish you a week of censorship-free

here is nothing new over disagreements on the best ways to educate the nation's schoolchildren. The periodic waves of education reform are more similar than they are different. There is nothing new under the sun ,JJSLZ What follows are my views on Amanda Ripley's book, "The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got There" and related miscellany. 4` ]PL^Z VU LK\JH[PVU OH]L ILLU PUĂ… \LUJLK I` I\[ not necessarily agreeing with, Rousseau's "Treatise on ,K\JH[PVU 1VOU +L^L` Z +LTVJYHJ` HUK ,K\JH[PVU and Piaget in a lecture on cognitive development of children that Connie, my wife, and I attended at the University of Southern California decades ago. She seems to have received more plaudits for her book than the interest Rogen and Goldberg are receiving for their movie, "The Interview." Amanda asks and appears to answer the question, "Why do children from Poland, Finland and South Korea perform much better on academic tests than American Children?" I believe she also states that a decade or so ago the children from these countries were not doing as well on academic tests as they are today. As an aside, maybe it has something to do in the change of their political system? Amanda's arguments are persuasive. The culture of the school should be intellectually serious, rigorous and have high expectations for all children. More money does not necessarily make students smarter. Teacher preparation standards are lax and the general esteem of the profession is low. As an aside, this is also true of school boards. Children are not served well when parents act like cheerleaders rather than coaches. The focus of parental involvement is misguided, rather than spending countless hours at fundraisers and athletic contests parents should simply read to younger children at home in the evening or engaging older students in substantive conversations about world events. Ripley's points are all See COMMENTARY page B5
Letters Missing the point on roadwork While Jacob Younessian is well-spoken and obviously an intelligent young man, I think he missed the point with regard to the road work on San Vicente. The accidents have occurred because of speed, lack of attention to the road and, in some cases, drinking, etc. If the road were widened, it would not be in keeping with a "rural community" and would allow for greater speeds. The new design will have a non-motorized path to accommodate hikers, cyclists and equestrians, which we need. What Jacob might want to consider is a campaign to lower the speed limit to help alleviate accidents. This is supposed to be a rural community, whose charm is that of a slower pace. That said, I enjoyed reading his perspective and foresee a future "mover and shaker." Kathy DaSilva Ramona Walk for Life thanks Thank you to the following for their

I believe that, if everything learned in high school is a measurable objective, we have not learned much of anything. It is not conformity that makes a country or school great; it's an individual striking out against the expectations of his/ her culture. There is a thin line between initiative and insubordination. There are great teachers turning in their graves — pleading and trying to say to teachers that they teach to free minds, they teach to inspire. 6UL VM [OL Z[YLUN[OZ VM V\Y UH[PVU PZ [OL ability, like no other country, to assimilate people from many lands. Historically the public school has accomplished this mission admirably. We are a pluralistic society but E pluribus unum, that out of many we made one nation. Education is an empowering process that allows children to develop critical thinking, compassion and orientation toward wisdom for timely action. Selfcultivation is the purpose of education. All that is tested does not count and all that counts cannot be tested. What is required is a structuring of the school system to tolerate sustained JVUÅPJ[ [OH[ HJJVTWHUPLZ KPZJ\ZZPVU HUK review of alternative courses of action. *VUÅPJ[ WYVK\JLZ ZVJPHS KPZVYNHUPaH[PVU stimulating relationships and needed change. Diversity rather than uniformity is needed in procedures. There is hardly a teaching task that cannot be accomplished in a multitude of ways. Educators must back off to be as objective as possible — where it is the duty to worship the sun, problems of heat will be poorly understood, where it is the duty to worship a pet educational project, the good of the larger society might be poorly understood with respect to the project. The real threat in accomplishment of objectives is not in deliberate deceit, but in the subconscious desires to substantiate one's previously committed position. There is nothing more obstinate than a fashionable consensus. My mind keeps telling me that all that it takes is an effective teacher, a willing student and a supportive family. A joyous and blessed New Year to all. John Rajcic is a Ramona resident and school board member who stresses that this is his opinion as an individual and he is not representing the board.

hether it was the morning presentation to the children or the evening discussion for adults, everyone present for former Capt. Luis Carlos Montalván’s talk came away with at least one fact: This man and dog obviously love each other. A New York Times best-selling author, Montalván was in town to promote his two books — and other issues. "Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him" is the story of how he came to be united with his service dog, Tuesday. His second book, "Tuesday Tucks Me In," was written with children in mind. Full of fun photos, the book describes the many ways he and his dog work together. As Montalván talked, Tuesday lay calmly at his feet. Each presentation ended with a brief demonstration of the many ways the dog helps him, from picking up dropped items on command to bracing him as he takes stairs. Due to war injuries, Montalván deals
with spinal problems and vertigo. But perhaps just as important as the physical ways in which the dog assists him is the emotional support the dog offers. “We’ve been together nearly 24 hours a day for the past six years,” he said. He discussed his issues with nightTHYLZ ÅHZOIHJRZ HUK HU_PL[` HUK KLscribed, citing examples, how Tuesday kept him calm and helped him deal with his fears. “I never thought I’d be in a better place, and I am much better,” he said. Part of what makes the story so interesting is that the retriever also suffers from trauma and needs emotional support from Montalván. The Ramona Library Community Room, where Montalván spoke, was nearly full for both discussions. The crowd consisted of everyone from dog lovers to retired veterans and people with disabilities. All age groups were represented. Montalván discussed the need for serSee MONTALVÁN AND TUESDAY page B8

School district honors two CIF championship teams By MAUREEN ROBERTSON
Ramona Sentinel
Coaches of Ramona High School's two fall CIF championship teams have something in common: They give others credit for their players' success. "It's because of who's behind me," girls volleyball coach Connie Halfaker told school trustees as 10 of her players stood behind her. "I can't take credit," boys cross country coach Sherri Edwards said. Steve Albanese, Ramona's cross country coach for the past 6 or 7 years, accepted a teaching job with another district, "so I kind of got handed this wonderful CIF championship team," said Edwards, also thanking her cocoach, Steve Emery. Halfaker coached the Division 2 CIF championship girls volleyball team, and Edwards coached the Division 3 CIF boys cross country championship team. Both teams received recognition, championship medal-
lions and applause at the school board's December meeting. The two coaches recapped the season at the meeting and introduced each player, citing the accomplishments of each. Halfaker told of what she considered the highest compliment the team received. After a close loss at a state tournament, "one of our parents came to our van and told the girls that it had been a long time since they had seen a team compete with good sportsmanship or such team camaraderie, and they couldn't tell whether we were ahead or behind because we played with such passion, enjoyment and support to one another." Edwards thanked the parents of the cross country players "for loaning them to me for the last MV\Y VY Ă„]L TVU[OZ Describing the players as gentlemen all the time, she said, "they are the greatest boys to be around. It's been my privilege coaching them."
