Whether you’re a newcomer or frequent visitor, you’ll find our Jewel by the Sea a very special and picturesque place to spend some time strolling, shopping and dining. Hit the beach for tide watching, kayaking and surfing. Hike the canyons and coves, or just enjoy the area’s geographic charms through your camera lens. La Jolla and surrounding beach cities (Pacific, Mission and Ocean Beach) — from Bird Rock, Windansea surf beach, and The Shores, to the UCSD campus and Mount Soledad — offer more than just natural beauty. Take time to savor our cultural gems, including the La Jolla Playhouse, Museum of Contemporary Art (reopening in 2021), Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, La Jolla Music Society’s new Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center and dozens of art galleries and performance venues. To make the most of your visit to our Riviera of the West, we have compiled this guide. Inside, we share secrets the natives treasure and much more. For weekly news and information about La Jolla, be sure to pick up a free copy of our town’s most-trusted newspaper, the La Jolla Light, every Thursday at the blue newsstands around town, or find us online daily at lajollalight.com. I hope you enjoy our wonderful community, and I welcome your feedback. E-mail me at ppfeiffer@lajollalight.com — Phyllis Pfeiffer, president and general manager, La Jolla Light, established 1913

BEST VIEWS 1 WINDANSEA BEACH Kick back and watch the surfers at WindanSea Beach where surfing legends were made. Be sure to take your copy of Tom Wolfe’s “Pump House Gang” to get the lowdown. You’ll find the surfer shack and benches for taking in the scenery and surfers. Take Girard past Vons grocery store to Pearl Street. Turn left at the light at La Jolla Boulevard. Then it’s a right on Nautilus Street and a left at Neptune Place. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the shack, originally built in the 1940s.

THE COVE
No view in La Jolla is better than the one from the top of Mt. Soledad. Here you’ll find 360-degree views, walking trails and the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial. Take Torrey Pines Road about a mile north of the Village to Hillside Drive. Turn right and then left to stay on Hillside Drive. Turn right at Via Capri and left at Soledad Park Road.
One of La Jolla’s best-known spots is The Cove. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Catalina Island and Dana Point or you can just relax and watch the swimmers. From Torrey Pines Road, take Prospect Street and follow the signs to 1100 Coast Blvd. If you’re in the Village, take Prospect Street to Girard Avenue and walk down the hill.

HISTORIC WALKING + DRIVING TOURS Step into the past by talking one of La Jolla Historical Society’s self-guided tours. Along the way, you’ll see some of the city’s treasures. • Walking tour of La Jolla Village focuses on significant landmarks and insight into the past century of community growth from historic cottages to modern buildings. • Driving tour of turn-of-thecentury beach cottages. Before paved streets, running water, and grand hotels, La Jolla was a village of small cottages that clung to the cliffs and nestled in the canyons along the rising topography of the coastline. • Driving tour of 1920s architecture in the town’s expanding neighborhoods — spurred by the development of the automobile and streetcar. CHILDREN’S POOL AT CASA BEACH
One of La Jolla’s most talked about spots is the Children’s Pool at Casa Beach. Created in 1931 when a seawall was built to make a swimming area for children, the beach is now home to a harbor seal rookery. Surrounded by a walkway and various vantage points, it is a great place for reflection or viewing the seals. Pupping season is in mid-December to mid-May, when a barrier is placed to protect the seals.

With soft sand and mild waves, La Jolla Shores’ mile-long beautiful beach offers great family fun. It is home to San Diego’s only oceanfront launch ramp where kayakers can directly access the coastal waters. In summertime, the waves at The Shores are generally calmer than at other area beaches, but rip currents can be strong so keep an eye on the lifeguard tower for up-to-date conditions. Beginner-level scuba, surf and kayak classes can be arranged at nearby shops. The beachside Kellogg Park features a juniorlifeguard themed playground. Public parking and restrooms are available. Located at 8200 Camino del Oro.
