RETAIL OUTLOOK BRIGHTENS WITH NEW CAR DEALER

City facing familiar issues in new year BY STEVE DREYER In many ways the year ahead in Poway will be very much like the one just concluded, with City Hall occupied with serious matters relating to the February 2012 death of the local redevelopment program and how that will impact the municipal budget.

But it won’t be all doom and gloom, City Manager Penny Riley said. There will be some positive signs on the retail front, including the opening this week of a new Chrysler/Jeep/ Dodge car dealership and the imminent relocation of a Toyota dealer. But will there be a lot of breaking news headlines out of City Hall in

2013? Don’t count on it, Riley said. The 2012-13 municipal budget, which takes the city through June 30, will likely need to be balanced through a transfer of reserve funds, Riley said. Just how much will be needed is undetermined at this point. The budget was approved by the City Council last summer with the under-

BY EMILY SORENSEN A Poway woman has achieved a childhood dream with her new book deal. Stephanie Diaz, who graduated from Poway High School in 2010, has recently signed a three-book deal with St. Martin’s, an imprint of major publisher MacMillan, for a Young Adult sci-fi trilogy. Her first novel, “Extraction,” will be released in 2014. “It’s really, ridiculously awesome,” said Diaz of her deal. “I’ve wanted to be a published author since I was 13.” Diaz, who attends See BOOKS, Page A4

standing that perhaps a transfer of $500,000 would be needed. That number has shrunk, then grown over the past few months as the city continues to negotiate with the county and state over what funds spent by the city on redevelopment costs are reimbursable. The latest accounting shows the See ISSUES, Page A17

Members of the Rancho Family YMCA might have noticed a little drywall dust around recently. The YMCA has been undergoing numerous changes and remodeling, adding new exercise equipment, redoing the pool and expanding the Child Lodge. “The remodel is to enhance the health and wellness experience for our members,” said Mark Thompson, who joined the Rancho Family YMCA as executive direcThompson tor in July, after 20 years of working with various YMCAs, including being the executive manager of Camp Surf for 15 years. “People are asking for high-tech, cutting-edge equipment and classes,” said Thompson. “Our focus is to serve more people and enhance the wellness of the community, as well as making the YMCA more of a family affair. Your com-

munity is stronger and better when you have people who are well.” The Wellness Center has been completely redone, with new, state-of-the-art cardio equipment from Precor with highdefinition televisions, and Internet access for members beginning in January. “It creates an Internet profile that looks at the user’s whole health and wellness,” said Thompson. The Aquatics Center, which is currently closed and will reopen Monday, Jan. 14, is also getting a facelift, with the pool being resurfaced and LED lighting being installed for a more contemporary look. General maintenance is also being performed on the Aquatics Center. Rancho Family YMCA’s Program Center is also getting a major overhaul, with a new indoor studio space being added, which will allow the YMCA to offer more cutting-edge classes, including indoor cycling with brand-new Kaiser bikes, Zumba, yoga and more. The Program Center’s remodel will continue past January. Finally, the Child Lodge, which pro-

Palomar Health receives $100,000 donation ESCONDIDO (CNS) - The Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians donated $100,000 to the Palomar Health Foundation, which supports Palomar Medical Center in Escondido and Pomerado Hospital in Poway, the foundation announced last week. The gift supports the hospital chain’s “Building Your Healthcare of the Future” capital campaign, which seeks to raise $55 million. The Rincon Reservation, in the inland part of northern San Diego County, is served by Palomar Medical Center. Harrah’s Rincon Resort and Casino is part of the reservation. “Good health is our most valuable asset as individuals and communities,” said Bo Mazetti, chairman of the Rincon Band. “With this gift, the Rincon people are expressing our gratitude for the care we have received in the past and investing in future healthy living for ourselves and our neighbors.” The hospital chain opened the new Palomar Medical Center in August in the western end of Escondido, replacing a smaller facility near the city center.

vides childcare for up to two hours for parents who want to work out, is being expanded, something that Thompson hoped would be finished by the end of January. In addition to the remodeling, the YMCA is waiving the joining fee of $150 now through Saturday, Jan. 19 to help those who are vowing to get fit in the new year. “People set really aggressive goals which can be discouraging,” said Thompson. “We want to keep in touch with members past 90 days to keep them motivated. We encourage people to take small steps and focus on the long-term. There are no quick fixes.” The Rancho Family YMCA, located at 9410 Fairgrove Lane in Rancho Penasquitos, serves the San Diego communities of 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Del Sur, Mira Mesa, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch and Torrey Highlands. For more information on joining the YMCA, call 858-484-8788.

Business experts to speak at Jan. 10 'State of Region' BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Experts will share their views on what lies ahead on the region’s and state’s economic front next week in Rancho Bernardo. San Diego North Chamber of Commerce’s annual State of the Region luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 at Sony Electronics, 16535 Via Esprillo in Rancho Bernardo. Cost is $49 for SDNCC members and $69 for non-members. RSVPs are required at www. sdncc.com or 858-487-1767. The speakers will be California State Controller John Chiang; W. Erik Bruvold, president at the National University System Institute for Policy Research; and Joe Ahn, regional manager of government and public affairs at Northrop

Grumman’s Aerospace Systems sector. Chiang will give an overview of California’s financial and fiscal position, comment on the outcome of the recent elections and give an economic forecast for this year. He was elected as the state’s chief fiscal officer in 2006 and reelected in 2010. His goals were to “weed out waste, fraud and abuse of public funds and make the State’s finances more transparent and accountable to the public,” according to his website. He has advocated reforming the state’s public pension systems, helping local governments navigate complex requirements under economic constraints, protecting the state’s natural resources, ensuring more than $2.1 billion in unclaimed property is

returned to the rightful owners and launching financial and tax assistance seminars for families, seniors, small businesses and nonprofit organizations. Prior to controller, Chiang was an IRS tax law specialist, an attorney in the State Controller’s Office and served two terms on the State Board of Equalization, including three years as chairman. Bruvold will review findings from the recent Unmanned Aerial Vehicles report the chamber sponsored. It details contributions the UAV industry make to the region and forecasts what may occur if San Diego loses it. According to the report, 86 percent of the UAV industry has an economic impact in Rancho Bernardo, Poway and the surrounding area.

Prior to his current position, Bruvold was vice president of public policy at the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. While there he led the successful effort to extend the TransNet sales tax for transportation investment and the regional response to the military base closures and realignments in 2005. Ahn will talk about the collective value of the UAV and defense industries in San Diego and its North County area, including the industries’ role and importance in the local economy and job growth. Before joining Northrop Grumman he worked in state and local government, which included being Chiang’s deputy chief of staff at the Board of Equalization.

Some skillful people are allowed to live, however, and the protagonist of the novel, Clementine, is one of those lucky

Diaz began writing in the second or third grade, and has been trying to sell novels since high school. “I was writing fantasy novels in high school,” said Diaz. “Extraction” is the third novel Diaz has tried to sell to publishers, and it seems that the switch from fantasy

to science fiction was the key. “I think I’m better at scifi,” said Diaz, who noted that she’s writing another, nonscience fiction novel at the moment. Film is another passion of Diaz’s, and her work on film and screenwriting in high school led to her choice of major. “I wanted to learn more about it, [because] I felt like I already knew a lot about writing,” said Diaz. She is working on adapting “Extraction” for the screen, though mostly for fun. Still, Diaz said she has a film agent trying to sell the rights, and there has been some interest. “I definitely have an interest in screenwriting,” said Diaz. Though her college graduation is fast upcoming, Diaz’s book deal means she’s not worried about her future. “I always wanted to write,” said Diaz, “so it’s nice to already have a job lined up.”

Opening Jan. 12 at The Lyceum Stage

San Diego REP takes on race and real estate BY EMILY SORENSEN The San Diego REPer tor y Theater is bringing “Clybourne Park,” the award-winning comedy about race and real estate in America, to life. Written by Bruce Norris and directed by Sam Woodhouse, “Clybourne Park” opens Saturday, Jan. 12 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 10 on The Lyceum Stage, 79 Horton Plaza. “Clybourne Park” tells the story of one house over 50 years, and the complicated race issues that surround it. Act One of “Clybourne Park” is in 1959, in the dream home of the Younger family in Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” where a white couple ignites controversy when they sell their bungalow to the neighborhood’s first black family. Act Two takes place in the same house, but 50 years later, with the reverse situation. Now, in 2009, a white couple is

From left, Sandy Campbell, Monique Gaffney, Jason Heil and Matt Orduña star in “Clybourne Park,” the San Diego REP’s new comedy. Photo by Darren Scott planning to purchase and demolish the house in the now all-black neighborhood, causing

distress and anger among the neighbors. “This is a piece that directly addresses the things people don’t voice about subjects of race,” said Woodhouse. “You’ll think, ‘did I actually just hear people say that?’” Despite the heavy nature of the issues the play tackles, Woodhouse says it is very much a comedy. “It doesn’t mean that [the play] is silly, but it’s funny,” said Woodhouse. “The elephant in the room is articulated.” While “Clybour ne Park” boasts a talented cast made up of longtime REP actors and newcomers to the REP’s stage, Woodhouse said one of the most important characters is the house itself. “The house is a major character in the story,” said Woodhouse. The play is set entirely in the living room of the house, first in 1959 and then in 2009. “The house ages 50 years in a 15-minute intermission, thanks to a very talented stage

crew,” said Woodhouse. In addition to being funny, Woodhouse said the play is also “incredibly smart and witty,” something backed up by its multiple award wins, including the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, a 2011 Pulitzer Prize, and a 2011 Olivier Award. In addition to the play, the San Diego REP is offering a number of related discussions and events prior to performances of the show, which are 8 p.m. Thursdays - Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. These events include a discussion about white privilege 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, excerpts from “A Raisin in the Sun,” 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, and “Sam’s Salon: An Honest Discussion of Race in America,” 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24. Tickets range from $33 - $52, $18 for students, with discounts for groups, seniors and the militar y. For tickets, call 619-5441000 or visit www.sdrep.org.

Seven tips to jump start a fitness program By Mark A. Thompson

HOLIDAY GIFTS — Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis member Frank Rojas, shown here with Rancho Bernardo Republican Women Federated co-presidents Jean Anderson and Mary Rose VanDeWeghe, led his seventh annual holiday visit to the Wounded Marine Battalion at Balboa Naval Hospital. Joining him again to spread holiday cheer were nine members of RB Republican Women Federated. They brought festive gift bags filled with 50 $25 gift certificates from Kiwanis, 25 $25 McDonald’s and 25 $5 Subway gift certificates from RBRWF, 50 packets of “Snowman Soup” prepared by RBRWF members, donations of playing cards from Barona Casino and calendars from Chick-fil-A, candy, gum, etc. Oaks North Golf Course donated two gift certificates, each for one round of golf. The volunteers chatted with the Marines over coffee donated by Starbucks next to Albertsons, fruit donated by Sprouts and cookies baked by RBRWF members.

Fitness tends to be one of the most sought after New Year’s resolutions each year, but starting a new fitness routine and making healthy choices can be a challenge. At the Rancho Family YMCA, we see an influx of new and returning members “hit the gym,” and we do our best to make everyone feel welcome and give them the support they need to succeed. The Y environment is helping me re-focus on staying fit and active, and I hope you’ll join me. Here are a few tips to help you get reacquainted with the gym and jump start an active lifestyle in the New Year: 1. Set goals and realistic expectations. According to Gerald K. Endress, MS, fitness director of the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center, individuals should consider creating SMART goals: This means goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Create a specific plan in order to stay on track, and set smaller goals so you avoid putting too much pressure on yourself. 2. Make workouts diverse. Step out of your comfort zone to keep both your body and mind alert and motivated. You’ll learn about various workout methods you may have never considered. Switching up your routine every six to eight weeks is recommended. 3. Don’t beat yourself up. Once you set a goal, unexpected events may happen to deter you from your workouts. When this happens, don’t put yourself down. Consider breaking down your workout into smaller chunks, from 30 minutes of exercise to 15 minute intervals. 4. Create accountability. Surround yourself with people who have the same goal. This makes it easier to maintain good habits, as you and your fitness partner are each other’s support system. The Rancho Family

Unmatched expertise means unmatched comfort.

YMCA’s “F.I.T. 4 Me” program has been a very successful service for members, adapting to their needs and providing a challenging workout with the support of a fitness trainer. 5. Don’t forget about food and calories. One common mistake many people make when they start working out is they eat less. However, when you start working out more, your body is using up more energy than before. Make sure to practice portion control, make healthier choices during meal times, and eat a healthy snack every two to three hours. 6. Keep records. People who keep a daily record of food intake lose about twice as much as those who record food intake one day a week or less. You can also use your records to set up a reward system for yourself every time you reach a goal. 7. Get social. Prevention.com reports more people use social media to get support and maintain accountability for their fitness and weight loss goals. Since research shows you’re more likely to stick to a plan if you have support, many people are increasingly turning to technology to keep them on track. Up to 15 percent of cell phone owners use apps to manage their health, according to a recent report from the Pew Research Center. From Facebook posts to tweets, blog and journal entries, snapping photos of what you eat to create a visual food diary, or using apps to designed to track food intake and workout regimens, social networking can help keep you engaged and focused on your health and wellness goals in the new year. Make health and wellness a priority in 2013, and do it in style and with support. Whatever route you choose, we wish you the success and prosperity the New Year brings. Thompson is the executive director of the Rancho Family YMCA. Learn more about the Rancho Family YMCA at www.rancho.ymca.org.

amma Teresa Ristorante Italiano serves authentic dishes from the Northern and Southern regions of Italy, made with only fresh ingredients, result in a palate-pleasing dining experience. Owner and chef Teresa Buccolo brought her many years of cooking experience when she moved to Poway from Italy a couple years ago, fulfilling her dream of opening her own restaurant. The restaurant’s most popular dishes are family recipes that diners won’t find anywhere else.

For pasta, there’s the penne “Mamma Teresa” with a creamy sausage and wine sauce. The fusilli gustosi includes mushrooms, fresh spinach and Gorgonzola cheese. The penne pescatore features mussels, clams, shrimp and calamari in a tomato sauce. For meat and fish dishes, the tagliata di carne (top sirloin steak marinated in extra virgin olive oil, rosemary, garlic and served over a bed of greens with parmesan flakes and balsamic vinaigrette) is a typical Northern Italian dish. Other popular meat dishes are

the filetto al pepe verde (filet mignon) and filetto de branzino mediterraneo (sea bass). Homemade Italian desserts such as tiramisu and imported wines such as Mezzacorona merlot are also featured. Mamma Teresa Ristorante Italiano is located at 13305 Poway Road in Poway Plaza; open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch Tuesday through Friday; from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for dinner; and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Closed on Monday. For information or reservations call 858-513-3667.

Two day trips well worth the effort

SPIRIT OF THE SEASON - LightBridge Hospice & Palliative Care volunteers and staff sang at two Poway facilities Dec. 12, Solaris Senior Living Community on Garden Road and Gate Manor on Gate Drive, as part of a three-day caroling trip around the county to reach hospice patients throughout San Diego. They brought along tambourines, treats, and gingerbread houses and also took song requests. Shown is volunteer Stephanie Seitles of Alpine sharing a book of lyrics with Solaris Senior Living Community resident Gerald Hughes. Photo courtesy of LightBridge Hospice & Palliative Care

Suzanne and I had the chance to take two incredible trips during December. Both were in Southern California and both within a day’s journey if you are willing to drive a little. The first was to the Coso Mountain petroglyphs located inside the China Lake Naval Weapons Station near the town of Ridgecrest on U.S. 395. We went at the invitation of an interpretive specialist we have known for years who knew our interest in Native American rock art. We had to be cleared to enter the base and our cars were searched and then we were escorted by volunteer docents. We had to drive 45 miles inside the base to even get to the rock art, passing groups of wild mustangs. Reaching the trailhead was almost anticlimactic as the trip was breathtaking enough. Once we descended the canyon on foot, we were immediately taken by the enormity and breadth of the petroglyphs. From the canyon floor to its rim, thousands of images of animals, anthropomorphs, and esoteric designs covered the dark patina of the rocks. The Paiute-Shoshone peoples of the area or their predecessors had left their signature over hundreds and even thousands of years. What a spectacle. Trips to this area can be arranged through the Mataurango Museum in Ridgecrest. Just Google Mataurango and all of the information is there. It is a trip that is well worth the effort. Speaking of trips that are worth the effort, our week of camping last month in Death Valley was a joy. We had not been there for 40 years and had forgotten what a geologic wonder it is. It would take weeks to explore all of the intriguing wonders with names like Devil’s Golf Course, Salt Creek, Stovepipe Wells, Zabriske Pointe, Marble Canyon and Badwater to name a very few. The views are spectacular in this national park, especially when you wake up at sea level and are surrounded by snow covered peaks as high as 8,000 feet. Our two most vivid memories of the trip

Bob Emery MY TOWN came on our last day and night of the trip. We visited Badwater at 282 feet below sea level and stood on a dry lake bed of pure salt. It was awesome. That night, we looked up at a moonless sky that was so bright with stars that there were shadows. I can’t remember a night sky that spectacular and I spend lots of time in the desert. Put Death Valley on your “bucket” list for certain. ***** And now, for an “oops.” Poway City Councilman Dave Grosch wrote me after my last column and asked where the Bowron House was that I described as the birthplace of Fletcher Bowron, a former mayor of Los Angeles. My column stated that the house was located at 14037 Poway Road at the corner of Bowron Road. The address is correct, but it is located at the corner of Welton Lane, not Bowron. Bowron Road runs in front of Valley School and the library and I knew that but as I merrily typed along, I inadvertently moved it several blocks to the east. My apologies to Dave and his wife who spent some futile time searching for the house near Evan’s Tires. Which brings to mind another historical tidbit: Did you know that the Evan’s Tire building used to be a drive-through dairy? When we moved to Poway in 1968, you could drive through the Power’s Dairy and buy milk, eggs, ice cream and other products. The dairy was owned by the late Ralph and Delora Powers, true pioneers in the Poway Valley. Reach Emery, a former Poway City Councilmember, at Powaybob@cox.net.

GUEST COLUMN

The Founding Fathers and gun control By R. Barry Cronin

E

very mass shooting is a horror that should shock the conscience and chill the soul. What happened in Newtown, Conn., is a special kind of evil words cannot even begin to describe. I do not often agree with our president, but on this subject, we are in accord. We must act. This madness cannot continue. We have read and heard much since this terrible tragedy, most of it concerning gun control. What would our Founding Fathers say? Surely never in their wildest imaginations could they have conceived the reality of mass shootings in America public schools while sitting down to collectively draft the Second Amendment over two centuries ago. I am not a constitutional scholar, but I do know this: most of the media commentators and politicians seem to be missing the point. The Second Amendment has nothing to do with some inalienable right to go hunting, nor was it primarily intended to better enable us to protect our families and homes against criminals. Our Founding Fathers had something entirely different in mind. The Second Amendment’s primary intended purpose was to give us the means to protect ourselves from abuses at the hands of our own government! The Fathers knew full well what a powerful central government, arrogant and unchecked, was capable of doing. Read the Preamble to the Bill of Rights. The Founding Fathers also never meant for our rights under the Second Amendment to be entirely plenary and without condition, either. That is a popular misinterpretation. This is the amendment. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the

security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Note the words “well regulated.” The implication is clear. Government can and should “regulate” the “militia” for the sake of our collective security. Note also the Fathers immediately qualified this authority with the guarantee “shall not be infringed.” And what is the “militia?” Is it the National Guard, as many have concluded? Let us again seek the Founding Fathers. It was George Mason who answered the question. “I ask you, sir. What is the militia? It is the whole people!” We citizens are the militia. The president recently appointed Vice President Biden to chair a new Gun Control Commission to come up with real proposals to address this national sickness. I sincerely wish them well and hope the lawabiding firearms community can participate in these debates with a genuine spirit of partnership and cooperation. Understandably, many will not, fearing an incremental approach to gun control by our government, despite passionate reassurances to the contrary. Legitimate concern. The calls for confiscation have already begun. So today, as we prepare to embark upon our giddy, headlong, lemming-like rush to disarm the nation, let us not forsake the wisdom of our Founding Fathers. “Those who beat their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not.” Mark well those words. An armed man is a citizen; an unarmed man is a subject. Cronin, a Poway resident, is a retired Marine Corps colonel and currently employed as the deputy chief of police at MCAS Miramar.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Good riddance to redevelopment Regarding your Dec. 27 story about “the end of redevelopment”: That was some of the best news for south Poway since Poway became a city. For years the city has continuously and systematically downgraded south Poway with its insistence on building low-income housing on every lot of size it was able to purchase. The next best news is the city has to dispose of up to 78 properties. Here’s an idea: How about the city buying half the lots and making parks out of them? At least south Poway would get some payback for the devaluation the city caused.

Gifts from Santa Many thanks to Susie and John Mullin for planning and implementing a project that will ensure a number of in-need Camp Pendleton Marine families a merrier Christmas. A special thanks for ensuring many of the children would awaken on Christmas morning still believing there is a Santa Claus. They are true patriots.

TOM YARNALL Poway

More gun laws not the answer Frank Auwarter (Letters, Dec. 20) should get his facts straight. People other than law enforcement and military do not have access to automatic weapons and clips in California are limited to 10 rounds. More gun laws are not the answer. Only law-abiding citizens obey the many already existing gun laws. Criminals and psychopaths will always have access to guns through whatever means. Taking guns from law-abiding citizens creates the present situation in which evil people using guns can

go to a gun-free zone and murder people without the ability to defend themselves. Armed security guards should exist these gun-free zones (schools, etc.). Evil people will always exist in the world and people should be able to defend themselves against them. Current laws do little to deter someone from using a gun in a crime. People who are convicted for killing someone with a gun should be executed immediately rather than spending 20 years on death row filing appeals, etc. People that use a gun in any crime should have severe punishment rather than being sent to a jail with libraries, color TV, workout areas, and of course they cannot be overcrowded! Look at the Middle East, where penalties are severe and guns are numerous. Shootings are non-existent compared to the U.S.

JIM KRUM Rancho Bernardo

Criminals ignore gun laws In response to Frank Auwarter’s letter in the Dec. 20 edition, he says we need tougher gun laws. I have a few questions for him; we have 20,000 gun laws on the books across the nation. Yes, I know this number is disputed; OK, how many is enough 20,000, 30,000, how about 50,000? I challenge him to point out one, just one incident where a criminal has abided by the gun laws. I don’t think that is asking too much. As for his statement of owning automatic weapon, it is illegal to possess a fully automatic weapon unless you have a special permit and there is a very heavy background check on that. I know this may be semantics, but there is no such thing as a 30-bullet “clip,” it’s a magazine. Please do your research before publishing it. It is also a proven fact that where there are guns in the hands of law abiding citizens there is less violent crime. How about we put the offenders in jail and quit letting them plea bargain down their sentence.

Real change by the Republican Party? Don’t count on it Calls for change by the Republican Party — especially its California branch — came from all sides in the days immediately following President Obama’s re-election last fall. But don’t expect that to go anywhere fast. For this is a party that values its core principles and predilections more than it does victory. As early as 1993, when California was just one year into its shift from being a Republican mainstay to becoming reliably Democratic in presidential elections, the GOP was warned that it needed to change its stances on immigration amnesty, gun control, birth control and abortion, equal pay for women and many others. The GOP is now generally supportive of equal pay for women. But it has not changed much on anything else. Nor is that likely, despite the fact that some of the changeoriented advice it has lately received comes from its most conservative members. Take Ted Cruz, the newly elected tea party-sponsored Republican U.S. senator from the GOP bastion of Texas, where no Democrat has won statewide office since the 1990s. “If Republicans do not do better in the Hispanic community, in a few short years Republicans will no longer be the majority in our state,” Cruz told a reporter. “If that happens, no Republican will ever again win the White House. New York and California are for the foreseeable future unalterably Democrat. If Texas turns bright blue, the Electoral College math is simple…the Republican Party would cease to exist. We would become like the Whig Party.” So Cruz implies he might compromise on some things. But many other conservative Republicans remain defiant of the need to change. Here’s what newly re-elected GOP Congressman John Campbell of Orange County wrote just days after the election: “I’ll be damned if this member of Congress is going…to

Thomas Elias SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOCUS go along with a slow move towards socialism rather than a fast one. This game is not over!” There it is: Almost anything that rubs conservative Republicans wrong, they tend to label socialist. But is allowing women to make their own reproductive decisions socialist, or is it fundamentally libertarian? Is gun control socialist — especially in the wake of the rampage in Newtown, Conn.? And so on. Even the Republicans in the state Legislature, now less than a one-third minority, are being warned not to sell their souls or betray their “no new taxes” pledges. “Voting for Democratic bills would be like taking a torch to the city of Rome,” wrote Jon Fleischman, publisher of the conservative Flash Report blog and former executive director of the state GOP. “It’s just a bad idea.” What’s more, Republicans are looking at November’s national results and seeing that they control governorships and both legislative houses in 23 states, while Democrats have the same one-party rule in just 14 — although the Democrats’ 14 have far more population than the Republicans’ 23. But Republicans regained control of the Wisconsin state Senate, lost temporarily to them via several recall elections last summer. Those kinds of offices are viewed by national parties as a sort of “farm team” that can often produce future candidates for the U.S. Senate or House. Republicans are doing just fine there, which makes many feel that fundamental change is

It’s really too bad about Christmas By Richard C. Edwards

I am no religious fanatic. I quit going to church over 60 years ago except for an occasional marriage, (mine) or funeral, (not mine yet.) I grew up in the depression years and Christmas was very tight for my family, but somehow we always had a turkey on the table and a present for each member of the family. I always enjoyed the Christmas trees that filled all the rooms in my elementary school. Miss Jackson, my sixthgrade teacher, even had us out in the halls singing carols for all the students. We were just kids and we all enjoyed the celebration, there were no complaints, by students or parents. I am sure that Gerald Pressman, one of my Jewish buddies, was not offended as he sang and played the piano each year. Why, I even took German in college and our class even wandered the university’s hallowed

halls of learning singing familiar carols all in German. Oh, how times have changed: no singing of carols, no Christmas trees, no nativity scene and no wishing “Merry Christmas.” I am sure those who have removed Christmas from the holiday can sit back and feel quite satisfied. Ah yes, thanks to them, no children will have to be put through the agony of having to sing “Silent Night,” gaze upon a Christmas tree or nativity scene anywhere near their school. It’s sad that people are so thin skinned that they think they and theirs can be corrupted by seeing and hearing anything that might appear as a religious symbol. I am sorry that so many youngsters will never have the opportunity to look back when they are 78 years old and tell their grandchildren a story like mine. Edwards is a Poway resident.

not needed. “Our strength is in the states,” trumpeted Grover Norquist, author of the no-new-taxes pledge signed by most GOP candidates. He suggests that’s where the GOP will try to enact its anti-union, anti-teacher tenure goals, ideas that did not fly in California, where the anti-union Proposition 32 lost handily last fall. The first state moving on this postelection was Michigan, once a union bastion. But the party must change, and especially on immigration, suggests new information from the America’s Voice proimmigration amnesty lobby. “While the Latino electorate’s disconnect from the current Republican Party runs deeper than immigration alone, it will be impossible for the GOP to get a hearing on its other issues unless and until they work to pass immigration reform,” said Frank Sharry, the group’s director. “Continued obstructionism on immigration would threaten the party’s future, especially when reliably red states like Texas and Arizona would go the way of California (as their large Latino populace becomes more politically active).” The tea party, which ran a couple of longtime Republican U.S. senators out of office last year via GOP primary elections, remains unwilling to accept anything like that. “The presidential loss was not on us, but on the country club establishment and Beltway elites,” said Jenny Beth Martin, a tea party leader. Put it all together and real change will almost certainly elude the GOP both nationally and in California over the next two years. Expecting change, even though the GOP now has sunk below the 30 percent level among California registered voters, is as realistic as expecting a dog to quack. Over 50? Here's how to find senior discounts Jim Miller

One of the great perks of growing older in the U.S. is the many discounts that are available to boomers and seniors. If you don’t mind admitting your age, here are some tips and tools to help you find them.

THE SAVVY SENIOR city, state or ZIP code, as well as by business or category.

Always ask The first thing to know is that not all businesses advertise them, but many give senior discounts just for asking, so don’t ever be shy to ask. You also need to know that while some discounts are available as soon as you turn 50, many others may not kick in until you turn 55, 60, 62 or 65.

Join a club Another good avenue to senior discounts is through membership organizations like AARP, which offers its 50 and older members a wide variety of discounts through affiliate businesses (see discounts.aarp.org). Annual AARP membership fees are $16, or less if you join for multiple years. If, however, you’re not a fan of AARP, there are other alternative organizations you can join that also provide discounts such as The Seniors Coalition or the American Seniors Association. Or, for federal workers, there’s the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.

Search online Because senior discounts are constantly changing and can vary greatly depending on where you live and the time of the year, the Internet is one of your best resources for locating them. To get started go to SeniorDiscounts.com, a massive website that lists more than 250,000 discounts on a wide variety of products and services like airlines, car rentals, travel, recreation, local transportation, shopping, restaurants, hotels, state and national parks, medical services, pharmacies, museums and more. You can search for discounts by city and state or ZIP code, or by the category you’re interested in, for free. Or, for $13 you can become a premium member and get additional, select discounts. Another great website for locating 50-andolder discounts is Sciddy.com. Launched in 2011, this site also lets you search for free by

Types of discounts Here’s a brief rundown of some of the different types of discounts you can expect to find. • Supermarkets: Many locally owned grocery stores offer senior discount programs, as do some chains like Kroger, Publix and Fry’s which offer some discounts on certain days of the week but they vary by location. You’ll need to ask! • Retailers: Many thrift stores and certain retailers like Kohl’s, Bealls, Dressbarn and

And, most hotels in the U.S. offer senior discounts, usually ranging from 10 to 30 percent. • Car Ser vices: If you’re renting a car, most car rental companies provide discounts to customers who belong to organizations like AARP. And some Jiffy Lube and Midas service centers offer discounts to seniors for auto repair and maintenance. • Restaurants: Senior savings are common at restaurants and fast food establishments, ranging from free coffee, to drinks, to discounts off your total order. Chains known for their senior discounts include McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Applebee’s, Arby’s, Chili’s and Friendly’s. • Entertainment: Most movie theaters, plays, ballets, symphonies, museums, zoos and aquariums provide reduced admission to seniors over 60 or 65. And seniors over 62 are eligible to get the “America the Beautiful – Senior Pass” for $10, which provides a lifetime of free access into all national parks and federal recreational lands. city may have to come up with about $600,000 the state will not approve. Whether that money, and possibly more, comes out of the current budget or the 2013-14 budget remains to be seen, Riley said. Meanwhile, the seven-member Oversight Board appointed to oversee the disbanding of Poway’s local redevelopment agency begins evaluating the future of about 70 parcels of land once owned by RDA. The process will begin this summer and may take a year or more, Riley said. Some of the parcels, such as those used for affordable housing projects and city buildings may stay in the city’s ownership. Others, including undeveloped land and several buildings along Poway Road, may ultimately have to be sold, Riley said Looking beyond redevelopment, Riley said the city’s overall economic health remains solid, with positive signs coming from recent sales tax reports. Those important tax revenues are slowly increasing at rates previously estimated in the current budget,

Mark Abelkop outside his new Poway Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram dealership at 13864 Poway Road. especially in the area of new car sales. Whether this trend is a sign of things to come or reflects the release of a recession-influenced built-up demand for new vehicles, remains to be seen, she said.

Bolstering the city’s position as a regional auto sales center is this week’s opening of Poway Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram at 13864 Poway Road. Owner Mark Abelkop originally owned and operated a Mitsubishi dealership on the site until moving it to a new building several years ago. He sold the building to the owners of the Breathe fitness center, then purchased it back from them when the gym closed. Abelkop said he signed a deal with Chrysler three weeks ago and has been renovating the building. New cars and trucks were to arrive in time for this coming weekend, he said. The dealership will initially employ a dozen people and will grow to about 45 employees within six months, he said. Meanwhile, workers are putting the finishing touches on the new Toyota of Poway at Poway and Midland roads and the owner of Perry Ford will embark on a major building and renovation effort on site later this year. Once the new Toyota site is

open, demolition will begin on the dealer’s old Poway Road buildings, plus the former Chevrolet dealership next door. The combined 11 acres are owned by the Lowe’s home improvement chain, which has approved plans to build a 121,000-square-foot store, a 31,658-square-foot garden center and a 4,500-square-foot separate business pad. Riley said the store should be open about 16 months after ground is broken. Riley said Wal-Mart plans to begin its expansion of the 19-yearold Poway store in February. The store will be expanded nearly 40,000 square feet, to 179,933 square feet. The expansion would be to the west, north and east sides of the Community Road store and will include the addition of fresh produce, a meat department, deli and bakery. The tire and lube center will be removed, along with a detached building that was once used as a post office and later as a produce store. Riley said city staffers will be working on an update to the Pow-

ay Road Specific Plan, which governs allowed uses along the city’s retail corridor. The area being studied for changes encompasses what is known as the Town Center area. On a related planning front, the full environmental impact report on the proposed widening of Espola Road north of Twin Peaks Road is expected to be the subject of one or more public hearings in a couple of months, Riley said. In the works since 2004, the report calls for the addition of a third lane, plus extensive roadside improvements, including sound walls. The city has no money available to make the improvements, according to the city manager. City planners have been studying ways to improve the flow of traffic on that portion of Espola Road for several years. An original concept, expanding the road from two to four lanes, was modified in March 2008 to feature one lane in each direction, with a dedicated turn lane in the middle to serve the high school.

PREP RUGBY

Vitale’s help brings rugby to Poway High BY MICHAEL BOWER Vincent Vitale could have very easily given up on his quest to bring rugby to Poway High School. But no matter how many obstacles were thrown his way, the junior was determined to share his passion for “the gentleman’s game” with others. “I just love the game,” said Vitale, who — like eight other Poway High students last season — played for Del Norte’s club since there wasn’t one at Poway. “I wanted to give the kids at Poway that were not playing a winter sport a chance to play rugby.” And that of ficially happened on Dec. 14, 2012, as the newly formed Titans rugby team, which carries around 32 players, played its first game of the season The T itans defeated Stern Mass of Los Angeles 41-5 in front of around 50 fans at Poway High School. But that would not have been possible without the extraordinar y amount of

Vitale. “Those two did all the hard work by getting the ball rolling,” said Ray, who with some 17 years of rugby experience agreed to coach

the team. “I get to coach. That is the easy part.” Ray, who played rugby in college and for the Marine Corps, did do a bit more than just offer his coaching

abilities. He put together an entire slide-show presentation to help answer questions by administrators throughout the process. But it is Beth who might have the toughest job. She agreed to handle all of the administrative work. She does everything from dealing with player forms to haggling with stores to get the best prices available on jerseys. “It is almost like having a full-time job,” explained Beth of her role. “It is a lot of paper work. But I am all about anything that will propel Vincent for ward; and if rugby is what he wants to use to do that, I will do whatever I have to do to help him get there.” Then, of course, there is Vincent. Clyde’s smarts lift DNHS BY MICHAEL BOWER Austin Clyde stands 6-feet, 2-inches tall, has an explosive first step, an outstanding vertical leap and a solid perimeter game. But what separates the Del Norte High junior from the pack is his basketball smarts; and he put them on full display last Wednesday in the final minute of the Nighthawks’ opening-round game against San Pasqual in the Mt. Carmel Holiday Classic. Clyde had jacked up 11 3-point shots — hitting four of them — throughout the game against the Golden Eagles. So when Del Norte trailed by a point in the final 35 seconds and he stood with the ball behind the 3-point line, he knew exactly what to do. “I knew they would be real aggressive closing me out, because I had hit a couple 3-pointers,” Clyde said. “I knew that if I gave them a pump fake, they would go for it.” And that is exactly what happened. Clyde got two defenders to bite on his pump fake and he proceed-

ed to drive right to the hoop for the easy go-ahead layup, and Del Norte hung on for the 56-55 victory over San Pasqual. Clyde finished with 23 points and five rebounds in the win. He also delivered a 26-point performance, which included five 3-pointers and eight rebounds, during a Del Norte loss last Thursday. For his efforts, he is the Velocity Sports Performance Athlete of the Week. “Austin is the kind of guy that if the game is one the line he wants the ball in his hands, and we want it in his hands,” Del Norte coach Bob Spahn said. “He is a clutch individual, but more importantly he is a real confident individual.” That confidence could stem from the fact that Clyde is as smart off the court as he is on it. The three-year varsity starter has never had lower than a 4.0 GPA and is See CLYDE, Page B3

he holidays are over, basketball and soccer tournaments have concluded and now it’s time for the winter sports season to get serious with league play just around the corner. The Bench knows many of you have been too busy to keep an eye on the high school sports action over the holiday season, but here is your chance to get caught up with how the area’s best teams are shaping up. As always, there have been a few surprises to the star t of the winter athletic season, but there have also been some of the usual suspects (Poway wrestling) mowing down opponents. There tends to be a section champion or two from the local area during the winter, and The Bench expects nothing less this time around. Here is a quick crash course on what you might have missed over the holidays and what you should be keeping a lookout for as the winter sports season hits full stride. No surprise here: There is no doubt the Poway High wrestling team will capture the CIF San Diego Section Division II crown, but what really is intriguing is the Titans’ shot at a state title. Poway is cur rently ranked No. 2 in the state — No. 19 in the nation — behind only defending state champion Clovis. The Titans nearly pulled out their second straight team title at the Reno See BENCH, Page B3

Nighthawks shooting for first win over Broncos BY MICHAEL BOWER Del Norte High fans have never had the chance to chant “just like football” with the Rancho Bernardo boys basketball team in the building. But “The Flock” could have the opportunity to do so Monday night inside “The Nest” at Del Norte High School. The Nighthawks will tr y to take down the Broncos on the basketball court for the first time in school histoLocal showdown ry, when the Rancho Bernardo at Del Norte two tango Monday: 7 p.m. for the third Note: Broncos lead all-time series time since 2-0 over the Nighthawks. If the turnout is anything like the football game between the two back in October — Del Norte’s first win on the gridiron over Rancho Bernardo in school history — then the gym will be rocking with energy from students and fans on both sides. “I know the students and the players on both sides want this game,” Rancho Bernardo coach Jim Choe said. “I know it is a heated thing with football, baseball and all the sports. I am sure it will be a great environment.” The Broncos have steamrolled the Nighthawks in the previous two meetings. Rancho Bernardo won the first game in 2011, 76-28, and the second in early January of 2012, 67-53.

But the Broncos are in a rebuilding year and Del Norte is full of veterans and a lot of confidence. “Two years ago, we went into this game hoping to be competitive,” Nighthawks coach Bob Spahn said. “This year, I feel confident going in there and we are intending to win the game. That is our expectation. But I

will tell you, if there is anybody that knows how to prepare their team for an opponent, it is Jim Choe.” Spahn would know. The two are ver y familiar with each other, having coached together at Rancho Bernardo for six years. Spahn was the freshman coach while Choe was the junior varsity coach. Choe

then became a varsity assistant and Spahn took over the JV squad. Choe eventually became the varsity head coach and was assisted by Spahn before he moved over to Del Norte. “Our programs are very similar,” Choe said. “There will be a handful of plays that are very similar.” Said Spahn: “(Choe) will know what we are going to do and there is no doubt about that. They will be a tough game and he will have his kids ready and prepared.” The Broncos may be young, but they are full of athletically gifted talent. Leading the way offensively thus far have been junior forwards Dillon Wirkus and Mondesi Gutierrez. Rancho Bernardo also starts a freshman, point guard Jeff Molino, who has taken over for the injured Lorenzo Mata (knee). Meanwhile, Del Norte is led by junior Austin Clyde and 6-foot, 6-inch center Alex Bulkin. Both have been getting stronger as the season moves along. “We have an athletic team and they have an athletic team,” Choe said. “I think the only difference right now is experience. They are loaded with experience and we are learning how to play varsity right now. But I know my guys are up to the challenge.” Spahn believes the key to the game will be which team can control its emotion and adrenaline the best. “The big thing is who can control their adrenaline the most out of the gate,” he said. “You get out there so pumped up and fired up — and trust me our guys are fired up — but whoever can harness and control that adrenaline and emotion the best out of the gate will have the advantage.”

The Nighthawks, even with a 5-7 record through Dec. 27, have been getting stronger with every game throughout the holidays. Austin Clyde, Chad Wetzel and Alex Bulkin have led the way for Del Norte. Look for the Nighthawks to challenge for their first Valley League title in the program’s history. **** Realistic section championship hopes: The local area is basically guaranteed at least one section championship squad with the Poway wrestling team, but there is one other team with a strong chance of capturing a section title. That would be the Del Norte girls soccer team. The Nighthawks reached the Division III championship game a year ago and have more than enough talent to get back to the title game and win it this time around. The area should have a handful of teams make the playoffs in the winter, but the two aforementioned teams will likely be the only ones to challenge for section titles.

Tournament of Champions, but fell short by four points to Canon-McMillan High of Pennsylvania. Two Titans with a strong chance at making a run to the state title match are Victor Lopez and Tirso Lara. Lopez, a 145-pounder, is ranked No. 2 in the state and Lara, a 106-pounder, is ranked No. 3 in the state by CalGrappler.com. Those two along with Steve Cervantes at 170 pounds will be the ones to watch closely as we get closer to the Masters Tournament in February. **** Del Norte boys soccer has arrived: The Nighthawks’ boys soccer team has had to watch the girls team get all the glory in the past, but this year the two will have to share it. The boys team got off to its best start in its third year with a varsity team. The Nighthawks have already won four games, after winning just two combined over the last two seasons. Seniors Trevor Renken and Dexter Offer have led the charge on the offensive end, as the duo has helped Del Norte score 14 goals in its first nine games. The Nighthawks even took down Rancho Bernardo, 3-0, for the first time in school history on Dec. 21. Look for the Nighthawks to challenge for a Valley League crown and make noise in the Division III section playoffs. **** Poway girls, Del Norte boys lead way on basketball court: Non-league play and holiday basketball tournaments are usually used by coaches as a chance to build chemistry and find a solid starting lineup for when league play rolls around. Well, it seems as if the Titans girls and Nighthawks boys teams have found their groove, as both are looking like league championship-caliber squads. Titans point guard Mandy Castro has played as advertised, leading Poway to a strong 8-3 start through Dec. 26.

The team, which is only in its third season at the varsity level, feels this is their year to breakout. “We were tough competitors with San Dieguito and Canyon Crest, but Canyon Crest was a solid squad,” Clyde said. “So when we saw they were leaving, we knew we had an opportunity this year. We definitely want to take league.” Clyde and Del Norte will be back in action Friday night at Mt. Carmel at 7:30.

LEGAL NOTICES Legals NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE CASE NUMBER: 37-2012-00152796-PR-PW-CTL Superior Court of California, County of San Diego 1409 Fourth Ave. San Diego, CA 92101 Madge Bradley Courthouse Estate of: David C. Dages aka Dave Dages To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of Dave Dages. A Petition for Probate has been filed by James Dages in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego. The petition for Probate requests that James Dages be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: January 29, 2013, Time: 11:00 a.m., Dept.: PC-1. Address of court: same as noted above. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within four months from the date of first issuance of letters as provided in Probate Code section 9100. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Petitioner: James Dages Address: 644 Altamira Ct. Vista, CA 92081. Telephone: 760-213-5530 P3259. Enjoy ‘A Bible and a Beer’ with the Community Church of Poway BY EMILY SORENSEN

Pastor Glen Larsen of the Community Church of Poway is trying out something new to reach the community. Larsen and the Blue Tattoo Sports Bar and Grill, 13437 Community Road, Poway, are teaming up to present “A Bible and a Beer,” a casual evening of spirituality in the relaxed atmosphere of a sports bar, 7 - 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28. A group will play Christian music while attendees enjoy a beer, and Larsen will give what he called a “casual dialogue” on spirituality. Larsen hopes to have the program be monthly. Larsen said he was inspired to star t the event one evening while listening to live music at the Blue Tattoo and watching the baseball game. Larsen was interested in not only having the woman performing sing at the church,

but possibly having his own church band perform at the bar. While the performer was unable to sing at the church, Larsen was inspired by the spiritual nature of her music in the bar. “I wonder if our spirituality is changing,” said Larsen, who said he felt that spirituality was moving more toward the secular world, with people uncomfortable going to church. “There’s an opening in the secular setting for a spiritual connection,” said Larsen. Larsen said that if people weren’t willing to come to church, then he’d go out to the secular world and find them. “And what is more secular than a bar?” Larsen said. More than just a convenient location, the Blue Tattoo is owned by a member of Larsen’s church, Emilio Savoji, who is enthusiastic about the idea. “God’s love doesn’t stop at the doors of the church,” said Savoji.

The spor ts bar also ser ves a second purpose, of helping Larsen reach out to men, who he said often struggle with their spirituality because of the feelings and emotions attached to it. “Men in sports bars are enthusiastic,” said Larsen. “Here is praise. Watching the game is almost a religious experience. It almost has a liturgy to it.” Larsen said he hopes the relaxed setting will help people be more comfortable with the discussion of spirituality in the secular world, as many people are “turned off” by religion. “In all of us, there is this spiritual need,” said Larsen. “We need to find ways to speak to it. We’ll come and speak to them, like an outreach. We’re not trying to save souls, we’re inviting people to believe.” To find out more about the “A Bible and a Beer” program, contact Pastor Glen Larsen at 858748-3304.
