The Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch and Poway libraries offer free exercise classes in some of the most popular styles, including Zumba, yoga and tai chi that are geared • Classes listed toward adults of all ages and body types. There are also on Page A12. some youth classes. Youth Services Librarian Zelda Santos-Sacro said the Rancho Bernardo Library’s classes are very popular and typically “jam packed.” This includes the two Zumba Gold classes offered each week, where 45 or more locals build up a

sweat as they move to Latin and popular music. Gerty and Stephania Rey – a Rancho Bernardo-based mother-daughter Zumba instructor team — said Zumba Gold provides a workout, but is less strenuous and not as fast paced as a traditional Zumba class found at fitness centers. That is why it is especially popular among older adults or those who due to injury want a full workout with moves that are kinder to their joints. “The classes are very effective,” Gerty Rey said, explaining Zumba is a mix of 70 percent dance and 30 percent cardio exercise. In the near future, 4S Ranch recreational amenities like ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, hockey arena, trails and the pool might bear the name of local individuals or businesses. San Diego County Parks and Recreation officials will likely ask the County Board of Supervisors later this month to approve a naming rights proposal. (The item has yet to be docketed.) The proposal is one of 100 aspects in the department’s cost recovery resource allocation plan, said Amy Harbert, deputy director of county Parks and Recreation. The proposal will also be presented at 7 p.m. today (Thursday) before the San Dieguito Planning Group, which oversees 4S Ranch. The meeting will be in the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Station meeting room, 16936 El Fuego in Rancho Santa Fe. Money generated through the endeavor would go into a trust to help fund capital improvements and major maintenance endeavors — but not ongoing expenses — at recreational facilities countywide, Harbert said. The business plan has been in development over the last couple of years. Harbert said the amenities available for naming rights would include ball fields, playgrounds or rooms, but not entire parks or previously named areas that traditionally have names reflecting geographic or natural features or have a historical context. For example, 4S Ranch Sports Park would retain its name, but its ball fields — currently dubbed numbers one through five — would be eligible. The county-owned Liberty Park in 4S Ranch is another that would keep its name. “We do not want to deviate from that (tradition),” Harbert said. “We want to strike a balance. We do not want it to be overly commercialized (but also) ... not take advantage of support for Parks and Recreation.” Any proposed name will have to be approved and conform with the department’s values, mission and objectives, she said. The Rancho Bernardobased GiveBack360 is offering a new way for nonprofit organizations to raise money without requiring extensive effort by members. The program is the idea of Poway resident Brian Pado, GiveBack360’s founder and CEO. PADO “I’ve been a participant for several years in different organizations that do fundraising,” Pado said. “I became interested in how much time, effort and money they expend toward fundraising rather than completing their mission.” While devising a way to free up volunteers so they could focus on performing good deeds rather than raising money to make them possible, Pado said he developed the online program that has the potential to be utilized almost anywhere in the United States. In addition, it can let grandparents, for example,

support their grandchildren’s fundraising efforts several states away by buying coupons for merchant-based offers instead of having to purchase wrapping paper, candy bars or any other products students might be selling. Its design also lets registered 501(c)3 organizations receive more money — 50 to 90 percent of the profits — instead of the much smaller amount they normally receive through fundraisers, Pado said. He estimates through traditional means profits are no more than 50 percent, but often much lower. When a group, such as Poway High, holds a fundraiser the members have supporters buy coupons for special discounts. When the site launched on Dec. 3 one participating merchant was Poway Toyota. It was offering $35 oil changes for $19.95. Pado said a deal like this would normally result in a $3 donation, but through GiveBack360 the school was going to receive almost $10 per coupon sold. Often there are a limited number of coupons available. While many deals are for local merchants — current offerings include Company

Pub and Kitchen, StoneRidge Country Club and Greg’s Power Washing in Poway, others are for companies like The Ideal Meal, which has a coupon redeemable at 18,000 restaurants nationwide. Pado said deals are for the lowest possible price and each shows how much the organization will receive when purchased. Local participating nonprofits include the Poway High Foundation, Del Norte High School and Boy Scouts of America. For those without affiliation who would like to purchase a coupon they can have their proceeds go toward a group the merchant is supporting or have the money donated to the GiveBack360 Foundation, which Pado said will distribute what it receives to causes such as Philippines relief efforts or Make-A-Wish. It is free for nonprofits, merchants and supporters to join, though if the latter would like to back multiple groups and receive other perks they pay a $10 fee per chosen group. BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Poway’s New Year baby was not expected to be a contender for the title because she was not due until Jan. 29, her mother said. “She decided to come early,” Tania Avila said of her daughter’s birth. Danica Aurora Avila was born at Pomerado Hospital at 11:31 a.m. on Jan. 2. She weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces and was 17 inches long. Despite being born four weeks early, her mother said Danica is a “happy, healthy baby” and did not have to stay in the hospital any additional days. Her parents — Tania and Oscar Avila — have lived in Poway for the past nine years, but their roots in the community go back years earlier. The former Tania Davila said she and her husband both

Welcoming Danica home were 12-year-old brother, Danny, and 8-year-old sister, Alicia, who helped their parents in naming their newest family member. “The name is something my husband and daughter picked out ... but my son and I got to approve the name,” Tania Avila said.

As for Danica being named Poway’s New Year baby, Tania Avila said, “we were completely shocked since she was born on the second” and they heard another baby had been born at Pomerado Hospital the day before. However, hospital officials said that baby’s family does not live in the immediate area. In addition, the City of Poway presents a $200 Costco gift card to the first Poway resident born at Pomerado.

A new chapter in fundraising benefiting Rancho Bernardo High’s library will open on Sunday, Jan. 26 when those of all ages participate in “Bookin’ It for the Broncos.” The inaugural 5K run/walk will take place along the Piedras Pintadas trail near Lake Hodges and adjacent to Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive. Participants are to check in from 7:30 to 8 a.m. at the park’s gazebo for the race that will start at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds will go toward Rancho Bernardo High School Friends of the Library’s efforts to support the RB High library in meeting the intellectual, curricular and technological needs of students and staff, organizers said. For now, entry fees are $30 per adult and $20 for ages 6 to 17. The adult price will increase to $35 after Jan. 14. Online registration at www.bookinitforthebroncos5K.com will close on Jan. 25. Eventday registrations will be accepted at $40.

Donations needed to save child abuse, sexual assault programs BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK

After 30 years of quietly helping thousands of victims of sexual assault and other forms of violence, the Palomar Health Forensic Unit now needs the community’s help to keep its doors open. The unit has two components — the Child Abuse Program (CAP) and for those 14 years and older the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). Working out of a nondescript building at the former Palomar Medical Center in downtown Escondido, the staff is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide free medical care to victims and help law enforcement collect evidence needed if an alleged perpetrator goes to trial. Victims are also given referrals to other recovery resources, such as counseling. Without these programs — CAP in Escondido and SART in Escondido and Poway — victims in this area will have to travel to Rady Children’s Hospital and a facility near San Diego State University, respectively, for medical exams that include evidence collection and forensic interviews with specialists trained in how to deal with victims, especially young children. The program also brings all law enforcement officials together so victims do not have to recount their experience multiple times, said Catherine McLennan, a CAP supervisor and child interview specialist. McLennan said each year CAP evaluates around 350 children who are suspected abuse victims and SART serves nearly 200 teens and adults. Due to the sensitive situation, she said the programs have not sought publicity until now that their existence is at stake. They were known to law enforcement and medical personnel, who sent over those needing its services. Since CAP formed in 1983 and SART in 1992, Palomar Health has subsidized the cost — in recent years about $200,000 of the $550,000 in combined annual costs, which does not include free use of the facilities, utilities and other such expenses, said Kimberly Cardoso, Palomar Health Foundation’s director of major giving. The remainder, about $350,000, is recouped by fees the program charges San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, San Di-

Skiff said the two causes are related since many foster youths have been abused. ego County District Attorney’s Office and other law enforcement agencies that contract its services for cases with victims in the northern part of the county spanning the coast to the mountains. The exception is victims who live in the City of San Diego’s northern areas — including Rancho Bernardo — who most often go through Rady or the facility near SDSU due to San Diego Police Department’s contract with them. But if city residents self-report to Palomar or Pomerado Hospital, they are treated through Palomar Health, McLennan said. Last June, Palomar Health officials announced that due to bud-

getary reasons the subsidy would end, McLennan said. CAP and SART, which both have 501(c)3 nonprofit status, needed to raise $200,000 by Dec. 31 to stay open. They also must raise money for future years since the public health district can no longer afford to support them. Cardoso said many in the community stepped forward and between $175,000 in cash donations and the remainder in pledges, the program’s 2012-13 fiscal year expenses were covered. Now it needs to raise another $200,000 to cover costs for the current fiscal year that ends on June 30. She is pursuing a combination of funding options, including community donations and grants. County Supervisors Dave Roberts and Bill Horn — whose districts cover most of the program’s area — are reportedly looking into funding options too. Dr. Mary Spencer, a Rancho Bernardan who since CAP started has been Palomar Health’s Forensic Health Services medical director, said there is a great need for the programs in this part of the county. “I’ve seen more than 3,000 kids in my 30 years at Palomar,” Spencer said. Before CAP formed, her duties included work at Rady Children’s Hospital, where she said young victims often had to wait several hours to be examined and interviewed. Police and sheriff’s deputies also had to wait with them, which she said is not efficient use of their time. In order to preserve as much evidence as possible officials advise victims to not shower, bathe, eat or drink anything, brush their teeth, change their clothes or clean up in any way. The SART exam and interview can take up to three hours, officials said. With statistics showing one out of every four women over the age of 14 will be sexually assaulted at least once in her lifetime, the need is ever present. According to Palomar Health’s website, more than 70 percent of rapes are committed by an acquaintance, 40 percent of victims knew their attacker less than 24 hours, in at least 76 percent of cases the rape survivor is of the same race SEE PROGRAMS, Page A14

Poway couple starting fitness program at area middle schools RB church starting support groups RELIGION

BY EMILY SORENSEN A Poway couple is using their connections to the professional BMX world to help battle obesity in the Poway Unified School District. Dale Holmes, five-time BMX world champion and British Cycling Hall of Fame inductee, along with his wife, Adrienne Wells Holmes, have partnered with the Poway Unified School District for a new after-school program, “Ride to End Obesity,” which will begin in mid-March at five PUSD middle schools. “Ride to End Obesity” will be part of the After-School Education and Safety (ASES) program for grades sixth through eighth. The BMX program will debut at Bernardo Heights Middle School, Black Mountain Middle School, Meadowbrook Middle School, Mesa Verde Middle School and Twin Peaks Middle School. The Holmeses aim to do two visits per school. The 90-minute program will include basic instruction on BMX riding by Holmes and several of his friends, including 11-time national BMX champion and Olympian Cristian Becerine, Australian 2013 Series Champion Anthony Dean and amateur BMX rider Bryce Betts. Holmes and his companions will also teach students about healthy eating and the importance of exercise. They also plan to bring 40 BMX bikes and helmets and set up a small obstacle course for students to try.

Adrienne Wells Holmes, who has been organizing the program, said she and her husband have been working with the school district for about six months preparing the program. “We wanted the message [of healthy eating and exercise] to come from athletes about getting an hour of exercise a day,” said Holmes. “We want to encourage kids to get involved in sports.” The “Ride to End Obesity” program is being sponsored by the Poway and Santee Walmarts and Barona Resort and Casino, with no cost to the school district. Holmes has worked previously with Barona through her charity work with the Toby Wells Foundation, and said that Barona Resort and Casino agreed to help sponsor the program to help out fighting obesity. After writing a letter to Walmart, the stores in Poway and Santee also agreed to sponsor the program, providing not only funding, but goody bags of healthy products for the students, as well as coupons for their families to use on healthy food in the stores. “Ride to End Obesity” is acting as a pilot program at the selected middle schools. “If it’s successful, we plan to expand to other grade levels,” said Holmes, “as well as other school districts.” Holmes said that the San Diego Unified School District has also expressed interest in their “Ride to End Obesity” program.

Beginning in January, The Church at Rancho Bernardo is presenting two support groups, called Grace Groups, for people dealing with mental illness. The groups are open to all. Family Grace Group is an 11-week Christ-centered support group that helps families gain both biblical and clinical understanding of mental health issues. Participants can learn practical skills to better navigate the everyday challenges of living with someone struggling with a mental health issue. Meetings are 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Jan. 14. Living Grace Group is a 10-week support group for people living with their own mental health issues. The Christ-centered support group is designed to encourage and equip those living with mental health issues so that they might regain their lives and rebuild their families. Each meeting is centered on a particular topic related to living with a specific mental health issue — understanding each topic through God’s truth and grace, group dialogue and practical tools for strength and life.

Melvin William Crosson 1920 – 2014

Lt. Colonel Melvin William Crosson, USAF retired, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on January 2, 2014 at his home in Rancho Bernardo surrounded by family. Melvin was born April 15, 1920 in Hastings, Nebraska to William and Minnie Crosson. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1937 where he was an active member of DeMolay. He attended Hastings College until 1941 when he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He graduated from Officers Training at Yale University and was then sent to the Pacific Command with the 8th Combat Cargo Squadron in 1944. Returning to the US in November 1945 he married Jeannette Kryger on January 1, 1946 in Neligh, Nebraska. They were stationed in the Azores, New York and Washington DC.

He was then assigned to the Strategic Air Command and was transferred to New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, and Texas. While stationed in Nebraska, he received his Bachelor’s Degree from University of Omaha. After a tour of Vietnam in 1962 he spent one year in Altus Oklahoma before retiring after a 23 year Air Force career. Settling in Santa Barbara in 1964 he had another 20 year career with Raytheon before retiring for good in 1984. In 2005 he and Jeannette moved to Rancho Bernardo’s Remington Club to be closer to family. He lost his wife Jeannette in 2008 after 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughters, Bobbie Davis and husband Mark of Rancho Bernardo and Cathie Billiet and husband Charles of Angels Camp. He has four grandchildren, Todd (Jennifer) Davis, Troy (Jie) Davis, Holly Davis and Katie Billiet. He has three great grandchildren, Nathan, Landon and Addison Davis. Arrest made in 'road rage' injury crash A 50-year-old Ramona man was arrested in El Cajon on Saturday on a charge of reckless driving in connection with an Oct. 26 injury accident that occurred on Highway 67 north of Poway Road. San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday that the felony warrant was issued on Nov. 19 for Douglas Lane and that Lane was arrested on the warrant on Saturday. He was booked and his bail was set at $500,000. Investigators said that “road rage” on the part of Lane was a factor in the accident, which occurred as two vehicles were involved in a right-of-way dispute as the two lanes merged into one. As the two vehicles merged, the passenger side of a Volvo S60 collided with the driver’s side of Lane’s Dodge Ram 3500. Investigators said the Dodge then veered to the right into a marked bicycle lane and struck a bicyclist who was also traveling northbound. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

Program run by Connection Church helps feed community BY EMILY SORENSEN

Some of the volunteers who run the food distribution program at Connection Church in Poway.

A Poway church is working hard to provide food for the hungry in the community. Connection Church, located 14047 Twin Peaks Road, runs a food distribution program called the Community Food Connection, which feeds over 200 needy families from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos and Scripps Ranch each month. The program, which is run by Bill Rearick, with help from his wife, Kim, as well as a small army of volunteers, opens its food stores three times a week for people on the Emergecy Food Assistance Program (EFAP), a government program which provides emergency food supplies to low-income households through food banks. Community Food Connections part-

ners with the San Diego Food Bank for the food they provide to EFAP recipients. People who do not qualify for EFAP, but are still in need of food assistance, are also welcome at Community Food Connection’s food bank, said Kim Rearick. The program uses donations to purchase food, as well as donations from local grocery stores, to stock its own pantry. “We run strictly on donations,” said Rearick, “and we spend the donations on purchasing food for our food bank, canned goods, dr y goods, meat and soda.” An individual or family can visit once a week to collect food. “Sometimes the EFAP food doesn’t last long, so we stock our own food to give out,” said Rearick. Produce and bread are provided to the church for free, thanks to the Rancho Bernardo Vons and the Rancho Penasquitos Albertsons, who donate

bread. Produce is donated by Backyard Produce, which collects excess produce from backyards and private residences and distributes it to the needy. Still, Rearick said they never turn away donations of bread and produce from the public. “We never know if we’ll have enough,” said Rearick. “We would love people to donate food as well. Non-perishables are great.” In addition to providing food weekly, Community Food Connection also holds a mass distribution one Thursday a month, where families can show up, take a number, and take home an entire cart full of groceries. Tickets for the carts are distributed from 1 to 4 p.m., and the food, which can include canned goods, bags of tomatoes and potatoes, bread and more, are distributed to the families who hold tickets. She moves around a lot so all can see her, faces participants so she can slow down when they start tiring or having difficulty, and offers variations for those with hip or knee issues. “It is slower paced but they get the same benefit,” Stephania Rey said, adding benefits are lowered heart disease and cholesterol, better joint mobility, decreased loss of bone density, weight loss plus sharper memory and reflexes. Many in the RB class said they have formed friendships and invited friends to join. “I love it,” said Cora Viado. “It makes me feel young.” Lucy Granados said since joining she is slimmer and has more energy, while Teresa Fidler said she likes the pace better than when she took Zumba at a fitness center. Sally Bismont, 74, said the class is good for seniors and now she is “more energetic all the time.” Santos-Sacro said library yoga and Zumba classes are less stressful because participants wear any loose-fitting clothing and have all body-types. In contrast, she said people can feel intimidated at a gym where they are surrounded by those who are very physically fit and wearing tight-fitting exercise outfits. RB Library youth classes include dance and parent-child yoga. They typically attract 20 to 40 per session, she said. Some teens have requested a Zumba class geared toward them, but it will not be added until there is sufficient interest due to cost. At most San Diego Public Library (city) or San Diego County Library branches the classes are funded through Friends of the Library organizations. Some are taught by volunteers and paid instructors often offer classes to the libraries at discounted rates since all classes are free for participants. 4S Ranch Branch Manager June Zhou said most of its instructors are volunteers and the library tries to offer what patrons request. “There’s a need, especially for yoga,” she said. “A lot ask for it.” Zhou said the library tries to encourage variety, which is why it offers more than just arts and crafts programming. “We want different programs to draw in all family members,” she said. Poway Branch Manager Penny Taylor said participation limits had to be put on the tai chi and yoga classes because they were getting so packed that people had no space to move around. They tried to hold tai chi in the courtyard instead of community room, but newcomers said they felt uncomfortable exercising in view of the public, she said. As for libraries offering exercise classes — not the first combination to come to mind for some — Taylor said it is due to not only the county library system, but county government officials emphasizing the need for good health. “There has been an emphasis on health for everyone,” Taylor said. “This is a charge from the top ... and something we support when we have a facility, have a room or ability to have exercise classes.” Taylor said it also goes beyond only offering

For example, Poway Library in conjunction with Palomar Health is offering free monthly blood pressure checks (10 a.m. to noon on the first Monday) and health talks like one at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 on Covered California (health insurance) and at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 on what to do in emergencies before an ambulance arrives. The crime is not one of “uncontrollable passion,” but one of “power, an attempt to hurt and humiliate.” In addition it can happen to anyone, female or male, and at any age, from a small child to the elderly. Rapes occur in public and in one’s home, day or night. “Many rapists target people they feel will not tell, such as children or teens that may have mistakenly placed themselves in a risky situation, such as using alcohol or drugs,” according to the website. Child abuse occurs in all countries and cultures, officials said. In the U.S., 22 percent of adults say they were sexually victimized while under the age of 18, including one in four females and one in seven males. Spencer said because children physically heal quickly and the crime might not be reported immediately after, the medical exam often does not lead to physical evidence. 'In the Time of the Butterflies' opens Saturday at the REP BY EMILY SORENSEN A Latin American literature classic is being brought to life on stage, in English, for the first time at the San Diego REP. “In the Time of the Butterflies,” first existed as a 1994 novel by Julia Alvarez, which chronicled an account of four sisters during the time of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Adapted into a film, a television series and, recently, a Spanish language play, the story of the Mirabal sisters is coming to life onstage at the San Diego Repertory Theatre in a new English adaptation, opening Saturday, Jan. 11 and running through Sunday, Jan. 26. “[‘In the Time of the Butterflies’] is a really beautiful play about four women from a family in the Dominican Republic, who experience living under a very repressive regime,” said director Todd Salovey. “They decide, individually, to take up action against the government.” The book is based on the true story of the Mirabal sisters. The sisters grew up in a middleclass, well-to-do family, said Salovey, and didn’t need to go out and try to make a change. “I love the notion that regular people are making choices to better their community,” said Salovey. The story will be told through three levels: a DJ playing modern Dominican Republic music, the author of the novel interviewing older Dedé Mirabal, and Dedé’s memories of her sisters during their times as political dissidents. The book was adapted into a play for the first time by Caridad Svich, who is assisting the San Diego REP with the English translation of her work. The show stars Catalina Maynard as Older Dedé, Sandra Ruiz as Younger Dedé, Jacqueline Grace Lopez as Minerva, Maritxel Carrero as Maria Teresa and Elisa Gonzales as Patria. “It was a very remarkable experience at the reading [of the play],” said Salovey, “many of the actors at the reading were cast in the show.”

The show will be staged at the Lyceum Space, which Salovey described as “very intimate.” “The storytelling technique we’re using [for In the ‘Time of the Butterflies’] is very theatrical,” said Salovey. “[The story is] told through movement, music and video production.” Salovey will be using live and recorded music to help tell the story of the Mirabal sisters, as well as video projections. A choreographer from Eveoke Dance Theatre has also assisted with the choreography needed for the traditional dancing the show will feature. “The language [of the show] is ver y poetic,” said Salovey. “It weaves three stories together, to explore what it means to be an agent of change.” “In the Time of the Butterflies” opens Saturday, Jan. 11 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Lyceum Space, 79 Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. Sexual assault victims need your support

ocal victims of sexual assault, both children and adults, need your help. Since 1984 Palomar Health, the taxpayer-supported public hospital district, has help fund the Child Abuse Program (CAP) and the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). Each year an estimated 350 children are examined and interviewed at the request of six participating law enforcement agencies by professionally trained experts so their stories can be told in a safe, supportive environmental and legal presentations can be prepared. Another 200 teens and adults come to SART each year to receive care and support following incidents of sexual assault. The two programs ser ve a large mountains-to-coast portion of North County, including Poway, 4S Ranch, Escondido and Ramona. (The San Diego Police Department has its own program.) CAP is based on a nationally recognized model for the evaluation of child abuse. It provides the expertise and environment needed to obtain the important information without making the child go through multiple interviews. Both the CAP and SART are non-profit corporations. Families do not pay for the valuable ser-

That was enough to pay program costs through June 30 of last year. Now the challenge is to find another $200,000 to keep the 24-hour service open through June 30, the end of the current fiscal year. President vacations, voters suffer I had to laugh at the tirade Martha Beck wrote (Jan. 2) blasting recent Republican presidents in response to Marie Woodruff’s negative letters about Democrats. When it comes to lying, these Republicans are rank amateurs compared the current president. These past Republicans were never awarded “Four Pinocchios” by the liberal Washington Post. Nor did any of them ever win the “Biggest Lie of the Year” award by Politifact. President Obama looked America in the eye and told us we could keep our current health plans and doctors while he knew it was a bold face lie. What kind of a man spends 17 days in Hawaii golfing and snorkeling while millions who voted for him are losing their health insurance and doctors? Why isn’t he in Washington trying to fix this stinking mess he created? Regarding recent lying Democrats, I also must mention Bill Clinton’s wagging his finger at us while saying that he never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinski.

California solution: Divide by six

he results of several surveys that have been released during the past month have been alarming. If they don’t help bring the American electorate out of its decadeslong coma, then nothing will. A Gallup poll conducted in December revealed that 72 percent of Americans feel big government poses a greater threat to the United States in the future than big business or big labor. This is a record high since Gallup began asking the question nearly 50 years ago. Its previous high was at the end of the Clinton administration when 65 percent felt that way. A Fox News poll conducted at the same time revealed that a record number of Americans (71 percent) also believe our federal government is “broken.” A miniscule 6 percent think it is working “pretty well.” The number has increased six percentage points since last year and 13 points since 2010. It appears that the only people who don’t have a problem with the federal government are those who work for it. A CNN/ORC International poll released the day after Christmas said the current Congress is not only unproductive, but is the worst they’ve ever known. Two-thirds said this last year for Congress was the worst in their lifetime. Threefourths of those polled said this Congress has done nothing to deal with the nation’s problems. Yet, because of a combination of factors more than 400 of the 435 members of the House of

Stay classy, Poway I’m a longtime resident of the “Candy Cane Courts” neighborhood in Poway. With nearly 100 percent of the homes lit up, the families that live here have voluntarily created a delightful holiday tradition for many other families. My neighbors and I are proud to be part of such a wonderful asset to the community, and we gladly exchange our increased electric bills and traffic jams in the cul-de-sacs for the joy we bring to old and young alike. As “Candy Cane Courts” has evolved over the years, we now get literally thousands of people, and while most folks are great as well as grateful, we’re getting many others who don’t mind their manners. To those of you who come here and don’t trash the neighborhood, I thank you. To those who leave beer bottles in my mailbox, neon light sticks in the gutter, and disposable cups in the bushes, as well as those who go onto our properties and touch, bend, move and even steal our decorations, please be reminded that we’d like you to keep it classy. Perhaps if the sheriff’s department set up a nearby sobriety checkpoint every Saturday night in December it would help remind some visitors to be responsible and show respect for our neighborhood.

Dick Lyles GET REAL Representatives and most U.S. senators will return to Washington after this year’s election without much difficulty. These factors include the fact that many have accumulated huge political campaign war chests, have the backing of special interest groups with deep pockets, and represent gerrymandered districts that make election challenges almost impossible. If you live in California and are fearful of big government run amok, then you are in double jeopardy. Fears Californians have about big federal government should be doubled in regard to our state. California has an overwhelming amount of unfunded debt, an unbalanced budget, no responsible direction, and no leadership. It is time for Californians to mobilize around initiatives that will make a substantial structural difference, at least in our part of the world. We did it once with the Proposition 13 tax revolt and we can do it again. Tim Draper, a Silicon Valley investor, announced in December that he is sponsoring a

new initiative to split California into six states. The plan is actually brilliant and deserves everyone’s support. The most important outcomes of the plan are that it will get rid of big government at the state level for Californians, while giving each of us better representation in Washington. This in turn gives us more leverage to solve problems at the federal level. In the past I’ve been skeptical of proposals to divide California into two states. After all, who in Southern California wants to be thrown in with Los Angeles? Two Californias would still be larger than most states and none of our problems would be solved. But six new states would make a world of difference. Each state would still have a population of about six or eight million, but it would make them manageable, and more values-aligned. Imagine having a U.S. senator or a state governor whom you might meet or see in person once in a while. Or maybe even have an actual conversation with? California voters need to stand up and be counted this year. First, we should vote against all incumbent U.S. congressional representatives and senators. Enough is as good as a feast

know a young man. From the age of 5 he was raised in the foster system, moving from home to home. Last year, at the age of 18, he was “emancipated,” meaning he cut his ties with the courts and they with him. Since then, he was accepted into a group home, graduated high school, started classes at Palomar College and got a dishwashing job. Then he slipped up — got in some trouble. Whether he’s to blame, it’s hard to know. The good news is no charges were filed and his record remains clean. The bad news is he lost his job while he spent time in the county jail. Last week we had lunch and caught up. He told me about his girlfriend: She’s outgoing, works as a carpet cleaner. Her dad died last year from alcoholism. Her mother likes him. He also told me where they live — in the back of a broken down van in Carlsbad. They have a friend who lives in a house around the corner from where the van is parked. She lets them keep food in her refrigerator and use her shower. They’re eligible for food stamps, so they at least have food. We had pizza for lunch and he took the leftovers to go. I drove him to the mall to get him a new skateboard deck. The van needs a fuel pump so the skateboard is his primary mode of transportation for now. We went to Costco so I could pick up a few “staples,” like wine, Pellegrino, aged cheddar, tomatoes. I bought him a case of ramen and some Cherrios. As we were loading things in the back of my car a $1 bill fell from his pocket onto the ground. He was pleasantly surprised. As we waited at a stoplight on the way back to his “place,” we saw a woman standing on the corner with a dog and a sign that read “God Bless. Anything Helps.” The young man reached down into his pocket and handed the dollar bill to me, “Here, give this to her.” I rolled down my window and did as he told me. He then leaned across me and asked of the woman, “Are you hungry?” “Yes,” she said. The young man then reached into the backseat and grabbed the box with the leftover pizza and handed it out the window

Amy Roost AU CONTRAIRE to the woman. I was surprised by both gestures, but especially the pizza because he’d already called his girlfriend on my phone to tell her he was bringing home dinner. As we pulled away, the woman asked me, “Are you taking good care of him?” I said I was and she said, “Good. I’ll pray for you.” I told her I’d pray for her too. When we were down the road a ways, the young man said, “Do you know who that was?” Surprised and wondering what I missed, I answered, “No.” “That’s my girlfriend’s mother,” he told me. A little further down the road we saw an older man rolling up the sidewalk in a wheel chair. The young man said, “That’s Danny.” I said, “Oh, how do you know Danny?” He said, “I help him get around when he needs pushing. I know most of the homeless people in Carlsbad. We all look out for each other.” As I process the interaction in the warmth of my home overlooking the Pacific Ocean, I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. One thing I am sure of is that a young man who is struggling to make his way in the world and helping others make theirs schooled me in a few of the heavenly virtues, namely liberality (a nobility of thought or actions) and humility. I’m also sure that enough is ofttimes as good as a feast. In this new year, may we all learn to share what we have, our leftovers, and found dollar bills. Faulconer states his case for mayor BY JOE TASH San Diego City Councilman and mayoral candidate Kevin Faulconer hit on his campaign themes of investing in neighborhoods, fiscal responsibility and public safety in a meeting with community journalists on Saturday, Jan. 4. The campaign for the Feb. 11 mayoral runof f election heated back up this week after a temporary lull during the holidays. Faulconer faces fellow Councilman David Alvarez in the runoff election to determine who will serve the rest of former Mayor Bob Filner’s term, following Filner’s August resignation in the midst of a sexual harassment scandal. Faulconer and Alvarez were the top two finishers in a November mayoral primary. “I’m someone who gets things done and works with my colleagues on the City Council across the aisle. It’s about results,” said Faulconer, 46, a two-term councilman who worked for a public relations firm before his election

Faulconer met with journalists in an informal session at one of his two San Diego campaign offices. By request of the campaign, journalists were permitted to take notes, but not use electronic devices to record the conversation. Faulconer is a Republican and Alvarez is a Democrat, although the mayor’s office is officially non-partisan. Faulconer said he can appeal to a broad range of San Diegans due to his ability to work with members of both parties to achieve the city’s goals. But he faces a demographic challenge, as Democrats enjoy a substantial registration advantage over Republicans in San Diego. According to the county Registrar of Voters office, 39 percent of the city’s 652,429 registered voters are Democrats, 26 percent are Republicans, and 28 percent indicate no party preference. “It’s not about being a Republican or Democrat, but what’s best for San Diego. That’s how you win elections,” Faulconer said. Faulconer does enjoy an advantage in one statistical measure — campaign funds. Recently filed campaign statements showed Faulconer raised $1.4 million in 2013, compared to $524,000 for Alvarez. During his tenure on the council, Faulconer said he has worked to make the city more financially stable, including efforts to reform employee pensions and require city employees to compete for contracts

against private firms, a process called “managed competition.” Pension reforms have included a 2012 ballot measure, in which city voters approved the elimination of guaranteed pensions for new city workers other than police officers, replacing them with a 401k-style retirement savings plan. Still, the city’s pension costs continue to climb. This year’s city pension contribution is $275 million, from a $2.8 billion total budget. When he took office, said Faulconer, the annual pension contribution was $165 million. The city has also moved to implement managed competition and, according to Faulconer’s staff, will save $10 million per year thanks to the five competitions held so far, all won by city employees, including such services as fleet maintenance and printing. Additional competitions are planned for such services as trash pickup. Another priority if elected, said Faulconer, is streamlining the development review process so that plans for new construction and remodeling projects, whether for businesses or residents, are reviewed within a set period of time. Too often, he said, projects have been unnecessarily delayed due to ponderous processing by city departments. Amid an electrifying playoff run by the San Diego Chargers, Faulconer said that as mayor he would support a proposal for a new Chargers stadium if it makes financial sense, and if it is approved by voters, possibly at either the

city or countywide level. He would not commit to being either for or against the use of public funds to help pay for a new stadium. “I’m not convinced we need to use public funds,” he said. “My priority is using public funds for our neighborhoods, and not for a new stadium.” Another priority, Faulconer said, is increased staffing and retention for the San Diego Police Department, which he said is short by 130 officers. On the contentious issue of medical marijuana dispensaries, Faulconer said he supports access to the drug for people who need it, along with protections for San Diego neighborhoods. He said a revised medical marijuana ordinance is expected to come before the City Council soon. Faulconer criticized a steep hike to the city’s “linkage fee,” imposed on developers to pay for affordable housing, which was approved by a divided City Council in November. Alvarez supported the measure and Faulconer opposed it. “We should be making it easier for businesses to expand,” Faulconer said. “The damage it will do while we are trying to create jobs is a huge reason I was opposed to it.”

Getting up to speed on your elderly parent’s finances, insurance policies, long-term care plans and other information is important because some day you might have to help them handle their financial affairs or care, or execute their estate plan after they die. Without this information, your job becomes much more difficult.

It’s also a good idea to get your siblings or other family members involved. This can help you head off possible hard feelings, plus, with others involved, your parents will know everyone is concerned. When you meet with your parents, you’ll need to sit down and create several lists of important information, find out where they keep key documents and how they want certain things handled when they die or if they become incapacitated. Here’s a checklist of areas you need to focus on. Personal information • Contacts: Make a list of names and phone numbers of close friends, clergy, their doctors, lawyer, accountant, broker, tax preparer, insurance agent, etc. • Personal documents: Find out

If they’ve made pre-arrangements with a funeral home get a copy of the agreement.

Financial records • Income and debt: Make a list of their income sources such as pensions, Social Security, IRAs, 401ks, investments, etc. And do the same for any debt (mortgage, credit cards, medical bills, etc.) they may have. • Financial accounts: Make a list of the banks and brokerage accounts they use (checking, savings, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRAs, etc.) and their contact information. • Insurance: Make a list of the insurance policies they have (life, long-term care, home, auto, Medicare, etc.) including the policy numbers. • Property: Make a list of the real estate, vehicles or other properties they own, and where they keep the deeds and titles. • Credit cards: Make a list of all their credit and charge cards, including the card numbers and contact information. • Taxes: Find out where they keep copies of past year’s tax returns. Sportsplex marks 20-year partnership with Poway BY EMILY SORENSEN When Bill Berghoff came out to Poway to help out his dad with a new business venture, it was only supposed to be for a year. “I’m still here, 20 years later,” he said this week. “It’s weird the way the world works, but I couldn’t be happier.” This month, Berghoff and Sportsplex USA are celebrating their 20th anniversary of not only being in business, but being in a partnership with the City of Poway. “They’ve been fantastic partners,” said Berghoff of working with the city. “The community of Poway have welcomed us with open arms.” Sportsplex was also given an award in recognition of their 20 years of partnership with the city at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. Sportsplex USA, located in the business park at 12349 McIvers Court, is a unique, jointly owned public-private partnership between Berghoff and the City of Poway. The sports park provides a safe and entertaining place to play softball and adult and youth indoor soccer, as well as viewing stands for proud parents and families, and a pub to grab a beer or a snack after the game. The sports park has three softball fields with full fences and electronic scoreboards, four slow-

According to Berghoff, over five million people have visited Sportsplex USA over the past 20 years. The City of Poway owns the land Sportsplex operates on, and built the facility, which is maintained, operated and staffed by Sportsplex USA. “This venture has been a win-win-win,” said Berghoff. “It’s a win for the city, by having complete cost avoidance and realizing a rent and several million dollars of economic impact annually; [Sportsplex]

wins by having this beautiful facility to operate, and the players win by having a state-of-the-art, well-operated facility for recreation.” The success of Sportsplex USA in Poway led to the opening in 2010 of a second facility in Santee. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Sportsplex will be having deals in its Post-Game Pub, selling draft beer for $2.50, hot dogs for $2 and burgers for $3 throughout the month of January. The sports park won’t be resting on its laurels during its anniversary year. In February, a partnership Sportsplex has formed with seven Poway Unified School District schools will begin, which will serve as a fundraiser for the schools. Sportsplex will donate directly to the schools for each student ages 3 to 12 who signs up for Sportsplex’s Youth Soccer League. The teams will be co-ed, and Berghoff said they hope to move forward with a partnership with the entire district if the first session, which begins Feb. 1, goes well. Department officials will be asking for the policy to be modified, allowing the department director or other delegated official the power to approve naming rights of five years or fewer or those that result in $15,000 or less in total revenue. Harbert said the goal of the modification is “efficiency and economy of scale.” All naming rights of longer terms or those for larger monetary amounts would go before the board for approval. In 4S Ranch, most eligible amenities are within 4S Ranch Sports Park. The five ball fields could be renamed for up to five years for contributions of $2,000 to $10,000; 10 years for those in the $4,000 to $20,000 range; 15 years for $6,000 to $30,000 and 20 years for $8,000 to $40,000. The hockey arena could be named for a five-year period for $10,000, with the amount increasing by $10,000 every five years up to a total of $40,000 for 20 years. The tennis and basketball court could each also be named starting at $2,500 to $10,000 for five years and increasing to $10,000 to $40,000 for a 20-year agreement. The swimming pool naming rights begin at $5,000 to $12,000 for a five-year agreement and increases to $20,000 to $48,000 for 20 years. Among other area amenities eligible for naming are a community garden in Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, starting at $2,000 for five years; and several area unnamed trails. Low use, local draw and rural community trails would start at $1,000 to

$2,000 per mile for a five year agreement; moderate use, mixed draw and suburban community trails would start at $2,000 to $4,000 per mile for five years; and high use, regional draw and urban community trails would start at $4,000 to $10,000 per mile for five years. Harbert said over the past three months more than 50 meetings were held countywide to gain community input. In addition, there were emails sent to the more than 30,000 who subscribe to the department’s newsletter and information has been detailed on the county’s website. “In general, we’ve received from community members praise for trying something new that will meet Parks and Recreation’s needs in the future,” she said. Some have said they want at least a percentage of the funds associated with their community’s amenities to remain within their area. “Some philosophically don’t want park amenities named because they come for the natural experience,” Harbert said, adding that is another reason why natural amenities, like trails, that already have a name are excluded from the list. The Rearicks have been involved in the program for about four years. “There’s nothing he won’t do for families in need.” Community Food Connection star ted only in Poway, then expanded as their food bank allowance was increased.

“We’re seeing more families coming in for food,” said Rearick. “As our program grows, we’re feeding more and more families. People are finding out about us through word of mouth.” Connection Church is also looking for volunteers to help out with the Community Food Connection, both with distribution of food to families, and with the unloading of food from trucks. “I know there’s so many people in the community who want to help others,” said Rearick. Volunteers are especially needed on the Wednesday morning prior to the mass distribution on Thursday to help

Report: Home prices slow a bit SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The increase in San Diego housing prices continued to slow down in October, but the annual gain remained strong, according to the Standard & Poors Case-Shiller Home Price Indices. The cost of a house in San Diego rose 0.3 percent between September and October, compared to 0.9 percent the month before. Over the ending in October, the climb was 19.7 percent, S&P on Friday. The region’s performance reflects the national trend, which shows the housing market slowing but still better than last year. “Monthly numbers show we are living on borrowed time and the boom is fading,” said David Blitzer, chairman of the Index Committee of S&P/Dow Jones Indices. He noted that annual gains remain in double-digits nationally. The indices were created by taking housing prices in 20 big cities in January 2000,

assigning each a value of 100, and tracking their subsequent rise and fall. San Diego’s index in October stood at 194.07, reflecting a 94 percent appreciation in nearly 14 years. The gain is the third highest in the U.S., behind Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. The 20 markets around the country combined increased 0.2 percent from September to October, and 13.6 percent for the year. In nine markets, housing prices actually declined in the monthly category. “The key economic question facing housing is the Fed’s future course to scale back quantitative easing and how this will affect mortgage rates,” Blitzer said. “Other housing data paint a mixed picture suggesting that we may be close to the peak gains in prices.” He said most forecasts for home prices point to single digit growth in 2014, but some data suggests growth could be faster.

PHS freshmen steal show on national stage The Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl is reserved for only the elite ninthgrade players in the country. Poway High freshmen quarterback Tate Martell and receiver Tyjon Lindsey showed why they belong in that category in a game televised on ESPN3.com. Martell tossed one touchdown, while Lindsey was named the MVP of the West team after hauling in two passes for TDs and returning a kickof f for a score in a 30-29 overtime loss to the East Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Lindsey pulled the West to within one in overtime with a TD reception, but the PAT was blocked giving the East the victory. The 5-foot, 8-inch, 160-pound Lindsey was arguably the most electrifying player on the field. He was a huge part of the West’s offense and he repeatedly made the defense miss with the kind of speed and elusiveness he displayed all year for the Titans. Martell and Lindsey were the only two players from California in the game, which showcases some of the top 15-year-olds in the country.

Davies joins niece on court at DNHS BY MICHAEL BOWER Aunt and niece on the same high school girls basketball team. That rare opportunity was part of the reason Natalie Davies decided to attend Del Norte High her senior year rather than get a jump start on college courses. Davies, the youngest of seven children, had earned all the credits she needed to graduate after her junior year at Dehesa Charter School in Escondido. But her mother did

not want her leaving for college early; so it came down to taking classes at Palomar College or attending Del Norte and playing basketball with her niece, Taylor Tollestrup, who was born about a year after she was. It was an easy choice. “I started club basketball with (the Nighthawks’ feeder team) when I was younger and I really liked the

program and the school,” Davies explained. “There was also the opportunity to play with my niece ... and Taylor and I have played with each other since we were tiny.” Davies is a 6-foot-1 senior forward for the Nighthawks, while Tollestrup is an up-and-coming 6-foot junior center. Their relationship goes much deeper than aunt and niece since they grew up together. In fact, Davies said Taylor does not call her “aunt.” “She just calls me See DAVIES, Page B4

Adam Porzak is a short-game specialist and professional instructor. That will only be part of the fun, as there will be putting and

chipping contests and prizes to be won from some of the top golf manufacturers. The SDJGA will also be there to register kids for the new year. Porzak hopes parents will stop by and check out what the association has to offer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Parents and kids should come by just to find out what opportunities they have,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There may be some families who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford to join a club so we want to let them know what options they have available to them through the San Diego Junior Golf Association, because there are a lot of programs that exist that kids donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even realize. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to turn anybody away and that is part of what we do at the SDJGA,â&#x20AC;? Porzak added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just about the kids that have money to play. If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have money, we will find a way to bring them into the mix.â&#x20AC;? The Junior Golf Day activities start at noon on Jan. 18, but kids can attend at anytime between then and 4 p.m. without worr ying about missing anything. Bernardo Heights will be the home of the upcoming Junior Pacific Cup tournament, which pits the top kids from Australia against the best from the SDJGA. That tournament starts on Jan. 29 and will run through Jan. 31.

The Poway Girls U12 All-Stars sliced through the Scripps Ranch tournament at the end of December, not allowing a single goal en route to capturing its second championship of the season. Poway goalkeeper Bella Hara and a strong defensive effort was behind each shutout, including the 2-0 blanking of Escondido in the title game. Autumn Officer, Josie Allen, Lexi Edgington and Jessica Ronces led the way on offense. Officer scored in Powayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s victory over the Encinitas Express in the semifinals and Ronces found the back of the net in the championship game. Both Escondido and the Express entered their contest with Poway having not allowed a goal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coming into the tournament we knew all of the teams had great talent,â&#x20AC;? She boosts my confidence in warmups all the time. I will miss a shot and she will say ‘you got the next one’ and when I make it she will make a big deal out of it. I definitely am lucky to have her as a teammate.” Davies moved out of her parents’ home in Poway to live with her sister and Taylor’s mother, Rachel Tollestrup, near Del Norte.
