Shutdown standoff raises concerns for airport control tower

By KAREN BRAINARD With the federal government shutdown Tuesday, San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Supervisor Ron Roberts stressed the importance of keeping the Ramona Airport traffic control tower open. The Federal Aviation Administration earlier this year targeted the tower for closure due to sequestration, but extended the funding to Oct. 1. In recent weeks, the FAA has not disclosed its plans for the tower, according to the county, and the looming shutdown was heightening worries about its future. “The chaos and petty squabbling over the feder-

al budget has left us in the dark about the status of the Ramona air-traffic control tower just when we need it the most,” Jacob said in a prepared statement. “With the most dangerous stretch of the wildfire season bearing down on us, it’s simply unacceptable that Washington, D.C., would allow the closure of a facility that is central to our aerial firefighting efforts and public safety. Within the past six months, Cal Fire aircraft based at Ramona Airport have conducted roughly 1,000 flights and dropped more than 575,000 gallons of retardant on backcountry fires. If the facility closes, those operations could continue, but withSee AIRPORT TOWER page 12

A 23-year-old Ramona man, accused of using a shovel to damage six vehicles and strike several people Friday afternoon, was arrested after he was found in the attic of a house on 16th Street, surrendering only after he was bitten by a sheriff’s dog, Lt. James Bovet with the sheriff’s Ramona station reports. The incident began when a call came about 3:30 p.m. of a man wielding a shovel and damaging
vehicles at Raymond Avenue and Ramona Street. “The report was this guy was acting crazy,” said Bovet. “There was enough damage to vehicles to make it felony vandalism.” The suspect, Daniel Ponce, fled the scene, and deputies tracked him to a house in the 600 block of 16th Street, said Bovet. Searching the house with the canine unit, deputies found the suspect hiding See SUSPECT page 12

Overturned truck spills cooking oil, shuts down SR-78 Saturday A 50-foot box truck that overturned, spilling 40,000 gallons of cooking oil, shut down State Route 78 west of Haverford Road for most of Saturday, reported California Highway Patrol. The accident, which occurred on SR-78 about six miles west of Haverford Road, caused a shutdown from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to reports. The lengthy closure was mainly due to Caltrans responding with the wrong posts to re-set the guard-
rail as the accident took out 300 feet of guardrail on Route 78, said CHP Public Information Officer Kevin Pearlstein. A hazardous materials
(HAZMAT) crew responded to the scene to scrape oil off the roadway and cover it with kitty litter to prevent the surface from being slick, he said. The driver of the truck, who was transporting the oil to be refined, was uninjured, said Pearlstein. Reports indicated the shifting of the cooking oil in the truck caused the vehicle to flip. Although CHP assisted, Pearlstein said the accident was in San Diego Police Department’s jurisdiction. Eastbound traffic on SR-78 was diverted at Bandy Canyon Road.

One solar project under construction, another in the works By KAREN BRAINARD With one large solar energy installation in the initial stages of construction, another is expected to be presented to the Ramona Community Planning Group in the next couple of months. San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) plans to install a 5-megawatt photovoltaic solar project by its substation on Creelman Lane, said a spokesperson for the utility. The project would take up a third of the 30acre parcel that SDG&E owns on Creelman, said Jennifer Ramp, and has been approved by the
California Public Utilities Commission. Ramp said SDG&E is fine-tuning design and plans to reach out to the community through a presentation at a Ramona planning group meeting and through letters to neighboring residents that will include a project site map. Construction is slated for the latter half of 2014, with completion in 2015, she said. The project will need county approval, said Ramp. The Sol Orchard solar project at Ramona Street and Warnock Drive is under way. A portion
of land has been cleared on the 110acre farm o w n e d by Mark Bousema, who is leasing the land to the solar company for 25 years. Sol Orchard will install singleaxis tracking photovoltaic solar panels on 42.7 acres of the property. The panels will have a production capacity of 7.5 megawatts and will tie into the distribution line that runs parallel
to Warnock and serves Ramona, according to Sol Orchard. Will Pritchard, Sol Orchard vice president, said the grading is done at the site, underground electrical work is under way, and they expect to begin installing the solar panels in early October. “It goes in pretty fast,” he said.
The project should be operational by the end of the year, Pritchard said. The Sol Orchard project was unanimously rejected by the Ramona Community Planning Group, which cited incompatibility with community character, blight to the area and loss of use of prime farmland. The project, however, was approved by the county Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors with District 2 Supervisor Dianne Jacob, representing her Ramona constituents, the lone dissenter.

Golfing goes high-tech at Ramona Fitness Center By JESSICA KING Calling all golfers. The centuries-old game of hitting a ball around grassy knolls has gone high-tech at the Ramona Fitness Center. Center owner Peter San Nicolas is offering U Turn Golf, a computer-based program that fuses one-onone fitness coaching with technology to up a player’s game. “Number 1 for me, I love golf,” he said. “I love the game of it. I love how difficult it is but at the same time how fun it can also be. You get to do it with friends and family, and for me there’s nothing better than that.” Though the program is run inside Ramona Fitness Center at 558 Main St., golfers do not need to be members of the center — or even golfers at all — to utilize the new offering. “This is for any skill
level,” said San Nicolas, noting the program can be adapted for avid players or a golfing novice who is just looking to shake up his or her exercise routine. Men’s, women’s and children’s clubs are provided to those without their own. The Ramona native and Titlest Golf Fitness Pro, who spent years on the amateur golf tour, explained
the program has six components that can each be extended or lessened to make more time for any of the other components to best meet someone’s individual needs. The components are warm-up, balance, myofascial release, massage, 3D simulator and drills. During the first four components, a coach works with the player on

fitness and overall body health to ensure someone is physically at his or her best to play the game. For example, if someone has a chronic problem with a tight back or shoulderarea muscle, concentrated massage or myofascial release would help loosen the area and improve a player’s range of motion. The last two components – 3D simulator and drills – involve computer sensors being strapped to a player’s body on his or her glove hand, hips and the back of the neck. Data from the sensors is fed directly into a nearby computer and projected on a large screen so the player can see immediately how they are doing with regards to their body rotations. Within the program are the average body rotations of hundreds of professional golfers so a player can strive to match his or her

averages with that of the pros. Also, the computer can project images of the most famous golf courses in the world onto the screen so a player can feel like they are playing where the greats do. The cost of the pro-
gram varies depending on length of lesson time and personalized services. Youths receive a discount. San Nicolas said he is also open to renting the simulator part of the program to groups interested in playing together.

Mike Bachoua, manager of the two new Country Wine & Spirits’ stores in Ramona, stocks wine on the shelves of the store at 1350 Main St. Bachoua said he hopes to add Ramona wines to the product line and bring in San Diego-crafted beers.
Country Wine & Spirits buys Daniel’s markets Country Wine & Spirits, which has a location in San Diego Country Estates, has purchased Daniel’s Market at 1360 Main Street and Daniel’s West on State Route 67. The two markets were owned by Ramona businessman Daniel Vengler. They opened under new proprietorship on Sept. 23, with lowered gasoline prices on Sept. 25 attracting lines of customers in a “welcome to the neighborhood” effort. Country Wine & Spirits’ Mike Bachoua, who is managing the two recent purchases, said they want to remodel inside but, as requested by customers, “We’re for sure keeping the deli.” Bachoua said they are expanding the li-
quor section and plan to bring in locallycrafted beers. “I really want to focus on San Diego breweries,” he said. He also hopes to add Ramona wines to the stores’ product line. Country Wine & Spirits is communityoriented, said the manager. “Without our community, there’s no us,” he said. The signs outside the stores still read Daniel’s but they are expected to change soon to Country Wine & Spirits. With the two recent acquisitions, the company has about nine locations in the county, said Bachoua. —Karen Brainard

Letters Shocked at ho-hum response to report of mountain lion near school I was shocked at the response to the mountain lion sighting as it appeared in a letter in the Sept. 26 issue of the Sentinel. The ho-hum attitude from the local sheriff’s department is about what I would expect based upon my own experience about a year ago, but at the very least, considering that the mountain lion can be a lethal threat to adults and especially children, the call from Mr. Strahan deserved a visit to the location by a deputy. And the person who answered the phone at the sheriff’s office does not even know the proper place to refer the call? A year ago my car was involved in a hit and run while parked in Poway. A kind passerby who witnessed this stood by until my wife returned to the car. The witness gave her a description of the vehicle, the license number, a description of the driver and even a description of the passenger. When I took the information to the sheriff’s office in Poway the response I received was, “So, what do you want me to do about it?” And that’s the way it ended. So much for expecting any help from the sheriff’s department. But the real culprit here is the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Whoever Mr. Strahan spoke with had to be a total moron. I thought second-graders were smaller than deer. Haven’t we all read many times that if you are on foot and come across a mountain lion that you should make noise, stand up and wave your arms to make yourself look as large as possible? Have all the small children walking to school been so instructed, or would the mountain lion consider them small prey anyway? Do I recall correctly that a mountain lion, three or four years ago, attacked adults in the mountains to our north, and the result in one case was death? All James Dukes parents should be concerned because what chance would a child have? Finally, what is the response from the school staff regarding this sighting? Robert Curwin Ramona
Begging for answers Last week Bernard Kuhn jumped all over me for using 1,200 words in an attempt to explain the 2,700-page Affordable Health Care Act (aka Obamacare). He was so aggravated over my “long lecture on the U.S. Constitution to support my negative view of Obamacare,” he suggested that my opinions concerning this program should be censored from this newspaper. I say the Constitution still gives me the right to state my opinion to the people, because the people vote. It gives me the same right to speak freely as it gives him the right to ignore or refute my statements. I say we need to talk more about our Constitution and Bill of Rights, not less. We need to ask how President Obama can get away with saying he can add 30 million uninsured people to Obamacare and “it won’t cost a dime.” We should demand answers to know by what constitutional authority the federal government can force us to buy a product that we don’t want and be punished if we refuse. And just begging for more answers. If Obamacare is such a magnificent health care program, why are Congress, government bureaucrats, unions and other Obama See LETTERS, page 9
Our First Amendment is under attack Guest Commentary
By BILL REYNOLDS
In the Sept. 26 issue of this paper, Bernard Kuhn gives voice to a complaint that the Sentinel is giving Darrell Beck too much “face” time. Mr. Kuhn should rejoice that Mr. Beck is still allowed to voice his opinion at all given that it runs contrary to what our folks in power and those who put them there believe.
Or is it only liberals that have the rights to free speech and outrage? I am beginning to think so, as the First Amendment is under attack on more than one front. Witness the new Media Shield Law that the Senate Judiciary Committee recently passed and will now ask the Senate to vote on. At first glance it sounds

like a good thing, but dig deeper. It will only apply to “covered journalists.” Just who gets to decide what a covered journalist is? CONgress. And do you think that they will give anyone who decides to print something contrary blanket protection, especially if they fall into the whistle-blower category? Get realistic. This is only the latest of many attacks. Do you have the right to assemble in protest? Sure you do, as long as you get a permit from the government and stand several blocks away from the event or person you are protesting. Stand
up in meetings to make your voice heard — and get led out or in worst case arrested if it is contrary to what is being preached. Hand out pamphlets on a public sidewalk? Not without an approved permit you don’t. Folks are getting arrested for that, too. Thomas Paine would be astounded as to what is going on in our country. All of these things have happened in the recent past and are becoming more numerous. So who gets to be authorized? Newspaper reporters for town, college, national rags? insurance rates have gone up because of the uncertainty of it. Who’s going to pay for this if everyone is out of work? What happens when everyone is in the cart and there is no one left to push it? As the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher so succinctly put it, “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” There are other ways to help people with medical costs and fix a few problems without ruining one of the finest medical systems in the world. How about tort reform or being able to buy insurance across state lines, opening up the insurance market for competition? As far as O-care being introduced by our duly elected reprehensibles….. uh, representatives, I didn’t vote
for mine so he could approve the bill to read what’s in it. Would you sign a contract without reading it? Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Kuhn. The government that can give you everything you want can also take everything you have. As for majority rule, it really doesn’t really matter, does it, unless it also “fits the narrative.” Most visibly on the horizon was California’s Prop. 8. Personally I am ambivalent to the issue, but the majority of Californians passed it only to have it overturned in the courts. Tell me again how majority rule works. True, the paper can publish (for now) what it wants, which you, Mr. Kuhn, seem to object to as it relates to Mr. Beck. You say
that you are a friend of his, yet you send in a letter complaining about his exercise of his First Amendment rights and the paper publishing them too often. Be glad you still can. Mr. Kuhn, I don’t know how well you know Mr. Beck, but if you were MY friend and did this to me, I would have to re-classify you as a FINO. That would be Friend In Name Only. I don’t personally know Mr. Kuhn, Mr. Beck or anyone at the paper. My issue is with anyone trying to abridge our freedom of speech, press and any other liberties granted by God — natural law if you prefer — and guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

and personalities? I suppose that as long as they do not stray too far from the official narrative, they are the most likely to be approved. How about bloggers and the electronic media? Guys like Matt Drudge. Do you think that those in power approve of him? There are many others out there, too, like Mike Vanderbough and David Codrea who broke the story on the Project Gunwalker scandal. What are the chances they’ll be covered? The answer is they already are. It’s called the First Amendment and it is not broken and does not need to be fixed. It is merely being ignored and stepped on. CONgress will be wrong and in contempt of the Constitution if they attempt to pass this. The First Amendment clearly states:
“Congress shall make no law….. abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” I see nothing in there about approved media. What could be plainer than that? The part missing is the one about religion, but that’s another argument. Mr. Kuhn objects to Beck’s treatment of Obamacare that “so many people need and want.” Has anyone asked the folks who have lost their jobs or had their hours cut due to the Medical Device Tax, Medicare Payment Cuts, the Employer Mandate, all of which are provisions within Obamacare if THEY want it? I don’t know about you, but my

Mastermind sentenced in mortgage scheme that involved local real estate agent A Las Vegas woman who was the mastermind of a mortgage-fraud scheme that involved Ramona real estate agent Teresa Rose and generated almost $15 million in illegal kickbacks was sentenced in San Diego Monday to more than eight years in prison. Mary Armstrong, 52, pleaded guilty to working with co-conspirators to recruit real-estate “inves-
tors” through ads in the Los Angeles Times, Monster.com and elsewhere, offering them an opportunity to buy homes using their good credit with no money down. To get these people to participate in the loan fraud, Armstrong promised to make mortgage payments on their behalf using rental income from the properties, according
to prosecutors. In reality, these so-called investors were mere straw buyers who were promised $10,000 for each property purchased. Armstrong, who was not a licensed mortgage broker, secured the deals by falsifying loan applications for them. Among other things, the loan applications falsely claimed exorbitant income from fake employers
and used sham companies that Armstrong’s then-boyfriend, 57-year-old William Fountain of Los Angeles, helped to create to verify the borrowers’ fabricated employment and rental histories, according the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego. Armstrong and her coconspirators used the loan applications to obtain mortgages with 100 per-
Two sentenced after guilty pleas to drug charge By NEAL PUTNAM A Ramona man who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale has been sentenced to 32 months in state prison. A woman arrested in the same May 2 raid in the 700 block of F Street was released from jail to live in a residential drug treatment program.
Thomas “Tomas” Christopher Martinez, 44, was denied probation by El Cajon Superior Court Judge John Thompson, who recommended he serve his time in a fire camp facility. Thompson gave him credit for 172 days previously served in jail and a fine of $1,224. Thompson dismissed the remaining charges af-
ter Martinez admitted to possessing a controlled substance for sale, court records show. He was convicted of robbery in 2008. Angelina Marcia Ruiz, 36, pleaded guilty to possession of methadone and Thompson dismissed other charges against her. He sentenced her to 270 days in jail and ruled that she could finish her sentence
early if a bed became available in a drug treatment program. Ruiz was placed on three years probation and fined $2,172 which includes the partial cost of a drug program, according to court records. Thompson also ordered her to pay $1,127 in probation costs, and $570 for the cost of a public defender.

in life with the Boy Scouts of America. He had an explorer Scout post where he taught young people how to fly while working at PSA. Many became successful commercial airline pilots. He also taught flying to young people in Julian, Borrego and Ramona. He truly loved doing this! He was also a football and soccer coach in Julian. His last and most recent service was with the Senior Volunteer Sheriff’s Patrol group in Ramona. He absolutely loved his job and all of the people he worked with. Ken was an avid gardener and served as President of the East County Rose Society and the San Diego Iris Society. He was a kind and fun loving man and he will be greatly missed and remembered with lots of love by everyone, especially his family. Ken passed away peacefully at home on September 28, 2013, from cancer. He was born November 5, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois. He leaves behind his loving family: wife, Carole; three children, Linda, Gregory and Eric; and grandchildren, Ryan, David Jr., Kayla, Mia, Sarah and Tyler. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 3 pm at the First Congregational Church of Ramona. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ramona Rotary Club, District 5340, P.O. Box 276, Ramona, CA 92065 or to First Congregational Church of Ramona.
Sweet O’ Bob, 90, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He passed away peacefully on Friday morning, September 20, 2013, with his youngest daughter, Tracy, by his side. Bob and Ann recently celebrated 64 years of marriage and anyone who has known Bob for any amount of time would know that he loved, cherished and adored her for at least another 11 years on top of that (true story)! While golf was his passion, it was his daughters that brought lasting joy and happiness to his life. Barbara Hartman and Tracy Oberlies survive him today, while his eldest daughter, Diane, passed away much too early to ever get the quality time that Bob had shared with Barb and Tracy. Grandfather of Scott, Brittney, Rio, Jory and Aja, and great-grandpa of Kage, Bob loved all and always had good advice and stories of much simpler times!

cent financing and thus avoided having to make any down payments on the properties. Armstrong earned millions of dollars in profits by convincing the sellers of the properties to inflate the purchase prices by $100,000 or more per property. The inflated amounts were allegedly for construction to improve the properties, when in fact no construction work was performed and the funds were diverted to bank accounts controlled by Armstrong’s co-conspirators. Armstrong then had Fountain and other accomplices launder the funds back to her in cash payments or official checks, so that the money could not be traced. In this way, she pocketed nearly $15 million in kickbacks, made few if any mortgage payments and allowed nearly all of the properties to fall into foreclosure. Armstrong arranged the purchase of about $100 million in loans through the scheme, resulting in estimated losses between
$7 million and $20 million to the mortgage lenders and secondary purchasers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Armstrong, who received a 100-month prison term, and Fountain were charged with participating in the scheme along with four others: John Allen, 44, a mortgage-loan processor from Laguna Hills; Justin Mensen, 32, a straw buyer who later recruited others and helped launder the funds; Audrey Yeboah, 55, a Los Angeles-based tax preparer who generated fake paperwork to support the loans; and Rose, 58. All the defendants have pleaded guilty to participating in the scheme. Fountain was sentenced Friday to serve 42 months in prison. Additionally, he and Armstrong were ordered to pay more than $500,000 in restitution to victims of the crimes. On Sept. 16, Allen was ordered to serve a year in custody. Rose, Mensen and Yeboah are scheduled to be sentenced in December. —City News Service
Politicians back 3 bills targeting elder abuse San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and two state senators on Monday asked Gov. Jerry Brown to sign three bills aimed at helping to prevent elder abuse, including financial elder abuse. “The changes to the law included in these bills will make a real difference as our Elder Abuse Unit works to hold defendants accountable when they abuse senior citizens in our community,” Dumanis said. She was joined by 36th District Sen. Joel Anderson and 38th District Sen. Mark Wyland. Ramona is among communities in the 36th District. SB 543 would ensure that theft from an elder is a “qualifying prior offense” when sentencing a person to prison, removing an ambiguity in the law to treat elder theft with the same seriousness as any other form of theft. “My mother was a victim of financial fraud, so this
issue is personal to me,” Wyland said. According to Anderson, “SB 543 will ensure criminals who commit crimes against our grandmas and grandpas will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” By signing the bill into law, Gov. Brown will be sending a clear message to seniors, said Anderson. “California will not tolerate senior abuse and we are committed to protecting these cherished members of our society with all our might.” The two other bills specifically target financial elder abuse. AB 140 would modernize the definition of undue influence for elder financial abuse, a definition that has not changed since 1872, and AB 477 would make notaries public mandatory reporters of suspected elder financial abuse. The governor has until Oct. 12 to sign or veto the measures.

Wildfire preparedness meeting targets animal evacuation The third in a series of emergency preparedness meetings will focus on animal evacuations. The meeting will be in Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Lane, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Presented by Ramona West End Fire Safe Coun-
cil, the meeting will feature Lt. Laura Ward from the San Diego County Department of Animal Service and Lt. Melyssa Jones with the San Diego Humane Society. “Are you prepared to evacuate your animals if there is a wildfire?” the meeting flyer asks. Attendees will:
•Learn what to expect in an evacuation if they have large and/or small animals. •Learn steps they can take now to prepare their animals so they’ll be ready. The first meeting in the series featured first responders from numerous agencies and was held in San Vicente Re-
sort in July. The second meeting, held in August at Ramona Oaks Park, focused on home safety with an emphasis on fire protection and prevention. Shown was the movie “Be Ember Prepared,” which demonstrates the areas in and around the home that are
vulnerable to ember showers and discusses how to make those areas ember resistant. Co-hosting the first and second meetings in the series were the West End Fire Safe Council and San Diego Country Estates Association Community Relations Department. Many at the first
meeting said they wanted more meetings, with each focusing on a different preparedness topic, and they suggested holding meetings in different parts of town. For more information, contact Kristi Mansolf at kmansolf@gmail.com or 760-4458545.

Brunch in the Park for retired and former school district employees will be Oct. 14 By popular vote last year, former Ramona school district employees ended a more than two-decades old tradition. The First Day of School Breakfast in the Park won’t be on the first day of school anymore — and it will be brunch, not breakfast. “The results of that vote dictated that a later date would be a better choice because of the weather,” retired Ramona teacher Dotty Cronin states in her g
notice of what is now the Annual Meeting in the Park. “Some of us felt that a brunch at a later time would be easier for the old-timers who put this on.” The 2013 get-together in Collier Park at Sixth and E streets will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14. Cost is $12 per person and advance payment is requested to Dotty Cronin, P.O. Box 3943, Ramona, CA 92065, or a check or

cash at the brunch. Paying in advance will make it easier for retired school secretary Jolene Dayton the day of the event, Cronin noted. Barbara Mason, who retired from Ramona Unified’s Food Services Department, will again prepare the meal with assistance from other former food services workers. The tradition of retired and former Ramona school employees and
their spouses started about 22 years ago, Cronin, who retired as Hanson Lane Elementary teacher, recalled. “A group of former employees decided it would be fun to meet for breakfast on the first day of school,” she said in a Sentinel article two years ago, adding she wasn’t invited that year. The reason may have been she was on the school board then. The breakfasts started at

Ramona Art & Wine Festival tickets go on sale Several organizations are joining forces to stage the first Ramona Art and Wine Festival at the Amy Strong Castle on Nov. 2. The event celebrates Ramona’s artists, blossoming wine industry and upscale chefs while raising funds for the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation. A dozen local wineries, 18 artists and five local chefs — accompanied by classical musicians — will be showcasing their craft throughout the historic castle. There will also be an auction of five painted wine barrels, featuring images painted by local artists. These barrels can be previewed from Oct. 14 through Oct. 31 at these businesses:
San Vicente Resort in the San Diego Country Estates, and The Business Barn, Affordable Treasures, Jewelry World and Country Wine & Spirits (formerly Daniel’s West) on Main Street. Additionally these mini-murals on barrels can be seen on the festival website. The live auction will take place at the
festival, with bids starting at $275. A General Admission Passport at $60 includes entrance, wine and food tasting, a logo wine glass, an opportunity to bid on the barrels and a tour of the castle. A V.I.P. Passport for $110 includes an additional exclusive winemakers’ din-
ner to be scheduled in the spring of 2014. These passports are on sale at www.ramonaartandwinefest.net or can be purchased via check made payable to The Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project and mailed to P.O. Box 1661, Ramona, CA 92065. Attendees must be at least
age 21. The Amy Strong Castle at 16302 North Woodson Drive is a hand-built stone castle, so flat or low-heel shoes are encouraged. Organizing the festival are the Ramona Art Guild, Ramona Chamber of Commerce, Ramona Wine Region Magazine (RVWR), the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association (RVVA), and the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project. Major financial sponsors are the RVVA and the RVWR with help from Bank of Southern California, Chuck Hall Aviation, Fidelity National Title and Sky Valley Network. RUSD hearing set on CSEA proposal
District focuses on creek cleanup, now that bird nesting season is over By KAREN BRAINARD Bird nesting season is over, so that means Santa Maria Creek cleanup can begin. Ramona Municipal Water District has been planning to clean up the creek area behind Ramona Community Park, which it owns, but wildlife agencies requested no work be done until after bird nesting season, which ended Sept. 15. Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire Battalion Chief Burke Kremensky said the district hopes to schedule crews to begin in mid-October “barring any emergencies.” The overgrown, trash-infused creek bed has created concerns for public safety, as it provides a place for criminals and drug users to hide and for homeless to live, according to authorities. The overgrowth could also cause flooding during heavy
rains or provide fuel for fire, residents have said. Cleaning it out, however, is a delicate matter. Guidelines from wildlife agencies must be followed to avoid any fines for violating environmental restrictions, such as using machinery or removing sensitive habitat. Kremensky said the water district will have a biologist walk the site to determine what can be removed. “There’s a lot of trash and debris left in the bed,” he noted. Kremensky said the water district’s portion of the creek has about “two-days worth” of trash removal. There is also a lot of dead vegetation and broken branches, he said. The district plans to use crews from the Puerta La Cruz Conservation Camp in Warner Springs for the cleanup work.
School board hearing to address instructional materials Ramona Unified School District will hold a public hearing to assure that each student in the district has sufficient textbooks and instructional materials. The hearing will be held during the school board meeting that will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Wilson Administrative Center at 720 Ninth St. Community members are welcome. The purpose of the public hearing is to establish the sufficiency of textbooks and instructional materials for each student
during the 2013-14 school year. School districts receiving state money for instructional materials must hold an annual sufficiency hearing during the first eight weeks of the school year. The intent of the hearing is to assure, among other things, that all instructional materials are consistent with state-adopted content standards and curriculum. For more information, contact the district Office of Education Services, 760787-2012.

Ramona Unified School District will solicit comments about the district’s initial reopener proposal to the union representing the district’s support workers at the school board meeting on Thursday, Oct. 17. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Wilson Administrative Center, 720 Ninth St. California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 733, represents district workers such as bus drivers, teacher’s aides, campus supervisors, food services employees, and maintenance and office workers. At the school board’s Sept. 19 meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Tony Newman said the district would meet with CSEA to review and explore options to restructure CSEA’s compensation package for the 2013-14 school year. Wages and health and welfare benefits were to be discussed. The district’s proposal will be available at the board meeting, states a notice of the public hearing.

Budding broadcast journalist takes turn at microphone By BILL TAMBURRINO Just about every football player, football parent, football coach and most football fans do one thing on Friday nights. They hurry home to see Prep Pigskin Report on KUSI or they record the program and watch it as soon as they can. Paul Rudy and his merry band of pigskinners provide 65 minutes of the world’s most comprehensive recap of San Diego high school football — or so the advertisement goes. PPR featured a Ramona High senior, Ava Anderson, as its PPR Pigskin Idol in the opening week of
football season. They gave her a game to cover, and she reported on the game on PPR. If she looked comfortable in front of the camera, it’s because she was. Anderson is comfortable with every aspect of camera work whether it is in front of or behind a camera or editing what comes out of the camera. She started working on video production at Olive Peirce Middle School. “I had been making videos since I can remember, but Mr. Estrada at OPMS really got me excited about video production,” she said. “He taught me the ins and outs of film-
ing, editing film and working in front of the camera. When I arrived at Ramona High School I got into the RHS-TV class. This year I am not in the class because it didn’t work into my schedule of advanced placement classes, but I still work with Mr. Hall. I am the ASB Commissioner of Communications and Technology.” Anderson has filmed and reported on just about every athletic team at Ramona High School. She has a knack for showcasing, highlighting and bringing out the best of Ramona High’s sports teams and athletes on film. She also does commercials. Her

Bulldog Angel segment inspired several young ladies to join the hydration team for RHS football. She plans to continue to work with cameras. She is a 4.35 student and is deciding between majoring in film direction and
broadcast journalism. “My experience on PPR really has me leaning toward broadcast journalism,” she said. “It was an amazing experience. PPR usually gives you an outline and helps you write the copy, but I did my
own writing and editing. Thanks to Mr. Estrada and the classes I took at RHS and Mr. Hall, I had the knowledge and experience to do the job.” RHS Coach and Athletic Director Damon Baldwin has called Anderson a future ESPN correspondent. She has been on his sidelines since her frosh year and she has done several segments on RHS football, football players and coaches. Her work has generated interest and spirit for every team she has covered, he said. Look for her at RHS sporting events. She will be filming, editing and producing segments.

Block by fire-resistant block, Ramonan builds her house By KAREN BRAINARD

n the hills off Highland Valley Road, a Ramona woman is almost singlehandedly building her house, using a fire-resistant block that is not wellknown in the United States for its construction. “I think it’s going along pretty good,” said Vicky Peters. “I think we can finish the trusses by the end of October.” Peters hopes to have the house ready for occupancy by the end of 2014. It has taken Peters nearly two years to construct the walls of her 2,300-square-foot house and 1,000-square-foot garage, and to put up trusses. Although she has had assistance from Ramonan Jim Goodwin and a contractor poured the foundation, by the time she is finished Peters will be able to say she built about 95 percent of the house by herself. The material she is using is autoclaved aerated concrete, a lightweight block

that was suggested by her first architect, who warned her the area is a high fire risk. While the walls won’t burn, Peters said the roof could catch fire because of wood underneath, but she added, “There’s not going to be any exposed wood to burn.” In addition to offering fire resistance, the autoclaved aerated block provides insulation, sound attenuation and resistance to mold, and it won’t attract
termites, she said. Known more throughout Europe, autoclaved aerated concrete is becoming more prevalent in Southern states, because it keeps a home cooler inside when the weather is hot, she said. Peters doesn’t know anyone in the area with a house built of autoclaved aerated concrete, but she has heard of other projects. “I’ve met some really great people through this
building experience,” she said. Peters purchased the 10-acre property in March 2007. She had been looking for two years and said when she found it, “I knew right away this is it.” Unfortunately three other people thought the same, and the highest bidder upped the purchase price to get it, she said. When that bidder later backed out, she grabbed her chance but had to match his price. That, plus grading, consumed most of her budget, she said. Peters decided to take on the project herself. By occupation, she is a program manager for a San Diego software firm, but she had experience remodeling homes and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity when living in the Bay Area. She bought a 26-foot used fifth wheel that she moved onto the property in December 2007 and has been living in since. Peters said she is really looking forward to com-
“I'm met some really great people through this building experience." — Vicky Peters pleting the house and getting out of the trailer. “I love living here,” she said of the location. “Whenever I come home from work and see down in the valley, it feels so good to be home — so relaxing.” The property boasts pomegranate orchards, a creek and expansive views of the valley that will provide a scenic backdrop when looking out the windows and French doors of her great room. The house will have a large master bedroom, two other bedrooms and 2-1/2 baths. Peters praised her neighbors who have also assisted her and loaned equipment. “My neighbors have been fantastic,” she said. In the summers, her nephew has helped with some of the building. “Sometimes you just
need another set of hands,” she said. The construction process became more extensive due to new building requirements, she noted. “It’s taking a lot longer than I thought,” she admitted. Once she is done with the trusses, she will put up roof sheeting and then a concrete tile roof — flat tiles that look similar to a shake roof, she explained. After the house is complete, Peters said she would like to get a couple of horses and build a barn. “I like more of the country and since I was 14 years old I wanted some land and a couple of horses,” she said when explaining why she chose Ramona. Peters invites anyone with questions about autoclaved aerated concrete to email her at Vhpeters4@ yahoo.com.

Dawgs come from behind to beat Helix 10-6 By BILL TAMBURRINO “Where does this win rank?!” That sounded more like an exclamatory statement than a question. But when Head Football Coach Da-
mon Baldwin repeated it, it became a question. Baldwin was asking about Ramona’s come from behind 10-6 upset win over Helix High School. Max Preps had Helix ranked 100th in the
nation, 19th in the state and second in the section. “When we beat Saints they were No. 2 in the CIF,” said Baldwin. Helix has won state championships, and has a Heisman Trophy win-
ner and a first round NFL draft selection who are still playing — Reggie Bush
and Alex Smith. Helix has also sent numerous players to college and the NFL.
Photo/Doug Sooley
Matt Lawler picks up yardage after catching a Marco Cobian pass.
And Helix has a 1-2 lifetime record against RHS. Coach Billy Clark was the head coach in the two other games against Helix. “They were playoff games and we were the underdogs in both games so they were played at Helix. Those two games were about offense or who could score the most points. Last night was all about defense. Ramona played the best defense I have ever seen us play,” Clark said on Saturday. Coach Stefon Pace put together a defensive game plan that his players executed with a tenacious aggression that brought the crowd to its feet on numerous occasions. One didn’t have to see most of the tackles; they could be heard. Ramona held Helix to minus 30 yards See FOOBTALL on page 32

Bulldog girls volleyball Do you have Medicare? shows comeback ability By JOE NAIMAN A four-game victory for Ramona High School’s girls volleyball team Sept. 26 at San Marcos High School included two games in which the Bulldogs came from behind to win. “It was quite an event,” said Coach Connie Halfaker. In addition to overcoming the San Marcos leads, the Bulldogs also had to overcome a match-ending injury to right side hitter Katherine Mauldin. In the first game the Knights had a 22-18 lead. “We came back to tie it up,” Halfaker said. Ramona knotted the score at 23 points apiece before securing an eventual 26-24 victory. Mauldin incurred an arch injury during the game but wanted to stay on the court. “She has a fight like no other,” Halfaker said.
Following the conclusion of game one, Mauldin limped off the court. “She faked like she wasn’t hurt to get back in, but she was too injured to continue,” said Halfaker. Mauldin is expected to be out for two weeks. Carolyn Buggeln had been out for 3-1/2 weeks due to an ankle injury and returned to practice the day before the match at San Marcos. “She did a really good job of finishing out the match for us,” Halfaker said of Buggeln. Buggeln is an outside hitter. Robyn Arthur was moved from middle blocker to right side hitter and Natalie Seol switched from outside hitter to middle blocker. While Callie Guasti led the Bulldogs with 10 kills for the match, Arthur and Seol had six kills apiece. “They were able to make that adjustment with no problem and continue

very strongly offensively,” Halfaker said. The coach added, “I do not think the lineup change is why we played badly in game two. We just played badly. We played quite mistake-riddled.” San Marcos prevailed by a 25-17 score in the second game. “The good news was that we were in charge of our destiny,” Halfaker said. She explained that Ramona lost that game due to the Bulldogs’ own mistakes. “We were able to turn that around,” she said. Ramona’s 25-22 win in the third game included a San Marcos run of points when the Bulldogs were stuck in a rotation. “We were up pretty handily,” said Halfaker. The Knights led for the first half of the fourth game before the Bulldogs tied See VOLLEYBALL on page 33

His parents, Bruce and Debbie Steingraber, said they hope that the scholarship fund will help those less fortunate play the game of football. Alexander was shot and killed on July 4, 2009, in Escondido while attempting to visit a friend. An All American Scholar, he was a 2001 Ramona High School honors graduate and athlete who played football and ran in track and field.

Bulldog girls open league tennis with two wins By BILL TAMBURRINO Ramona High’s girls tennis team had a busy week as it opened Valley League action with victories over Oceanside and Valley Center and lost a close non-league match to Granite Hills High School. The Lady Dawgs beat Oceanside 18-0 at Riviera Oaks. Coach Matt McCormick was impressed with the play of Hanna Kent (1-6, 6-2 and 6-0). “Hanna won two of her three sets in her varsity debut,” he said. McCormick also lauded the play of his No. 2 singles player: “Megan Douglass (7-6, 6-0 and 6-1) dominated her opponents and took out Oceanside’s No. 1 player in a tie breaker.” Ramona’s No. 1 singles and doubles players had no trouble against the Pirates. Jessica Failla went 6-0 in all three sets as did Lauren Dunker and Rebecca Vaca.
“Cassidy Owens and Danielle Vizcarra (6-1, 6-0 and 6-0) played incredibly well and won 18 of 19 games in three sets,” said the coach. McCormick also lauded the play of Caroline Lopresti and Alyssa Virgilio who went 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1. Ramona won its second Valley League match by beating Valley Center 13-5 at home. The Bulldog girls team took 6 of 9 singles points. Failla (6-0, 6-0 and 6-0) and Douglass (61, 6-0 and 6-2) routed all three of their opponents. “Hanna (Kent) continued to gain varsity experience playing strong against all of her opponents,” said McCormick. Ramona took 7 of 9 doubles points. Dunker and Vaca (6-3, 6-0 and 6-0) and Owens and Vizcarra (6-1, 6-4 and 6-1) swept the competition. Virgilio and Lopresti (2-6, 3-6 and 6-1) “added an important team point and played tough against all three
on the court. She will be a strong contender in the CIF individual championships.” Failla has not lost a set since joining the team. She enrolled at Ramona High School this year and recently verbally committed to play for University of
Southern California which offered her a tennis scholarship. Failla would start in fall 2015. She had considered several schools, including UCLA, but after meeting the Trojan’s athletic director, Pat Haden, Failla was convinced that USC was the perfect fit.

teams,” said McCormick. Ramona lost to Granite Hills 8-10 on the road in a non-league match. “It was a close match and we almost pulled it out in the third rotation. We were just four games from a victory against a tough CIF playoff caliber
Division I school,” he said. The coach had praise for the play of his No. 1 player: “Jessica Failla took apart each of her opponents’ games in a display of complete and total dominance. She put on a show of her strength, versatility and intelligence
Ramona High School’s girls golf team lost to Valley League rival Mission Vista 199-261. The Timberwolves all but clinched a league title with the win. Kailey Hill shot low score for the Lady Dawgs with a 45. Cheyenne Hockin continued to shoot well as she carded a 51. Caitlyn Doulgeropoulos shot a 52, Bre Hirsh, 55, Rachel Costan, 58, and Shannon Curristan turned in a 63. Hill is one of the few
Water Dawgs fall short in Westview match By JOE NAIMAN
R
amona High School boys water polo coach Donnie Williams was pleased with how the Bulldogs played as a team during their Sept. 25 match at Westview even though the Wolverines prevailed by a 16-7 score. “I thought all the guys did a good job playing together,” Williams said. “I thought all in all how our guys played together was great.” Ramona had 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first period, which ended with Westview holding a 3-2 lead after a Wolverine score late in the quarter. Westview extended its lead to 7-2 during the second period and had a 9-5 halftime cushion. “They kind of took it to us pretty early,” Williams said. The Bulldogs scored the initial third-period goal, although Westview re-
gained the four-goal lead and then scored twice in the quarter’s final 35 seconds to take a 12-6 advantage into the final period. “They’re a pretty strong program,” Williams said of Westview. “They were really a tough team. They played a lot together this summer.” Ironically, one of Williams’ concerns about being a team rather than reliance on an individual player was exposed in the match against Westview. Jesse Reiling, who led the team with four goals in the Bulldogs’ 8-7 win Sept. 10 and nine goals in Ramona’s 15-14 triumph Sept. 7, was held scoreless. “They shut down Jesse pretty well,” said Williams. Garrett Klem scored three of Ramona’s goals and also had three steals. Ryan Hall, Spencer Schwegler, Levi Vermeulen, and Thomas Abbott each scored once against See WATER POLO on page 35
three-sport athletes at Ramona High School. She has verbally committed to the University of San Diego to continue her education and to play softball. She also is a starter on Dan Marshall’s Bulldog basketball team and has over a 4.00 grade point average. Her favorite sport is softball but she is glad that she has been able to play three sports at RHS. “I get to golf with my dad (Bob) on weekends and we have a blast. I never took lessons. He has coached me in golf and softball. I also play golf at times with my brother (Robert). My mom (Chona) doesn’t play, she is the smart one in the family,” joked Hill. Hill plans on making golf a lifelong pursuit. “I am glad that I got to play golf in high school. Coach (John) Rathbun has helped me a lot. I enjoy playing most with my friends, Bre (Hirsh) and Caitlyn (Doulgeropoulos). We have golf pride,” said Hill with a chuckle.

rushing and 19 total yards in the first half. Pace sent linebackers, corners, and safeties and they all made tackles for losses. Travis Kerchner, Christian Drews, T-Bone Williams, Dallas Domnitz, Ben Barnat and Patrick Hastings all had sacks in the first half. Garrett Binkley recovered a fumble. Nathan Cherek and Tanner Williams made several big plays on passes. After 24 minutes of action defense, Ramona led 3-0 on a 32-yard Tyler Vargas field goal. Vargas had another field goal attempt ruled wide left at the end of the half that was close enough to argue about. Momentum changed after intermission. Helix took

the kickoff and marched down the field. Again Pace’s defense rose to the occasion. Garrett Dart made an acrobatic interception in the end zone to stop the drive. Helix’s defense forced a Bulldog punt and had great field possession at midfield. Pace sent defensive back Christian Dominquez on a stunt and he recorded a sack for a loss of 13 yards to stall another drive. Ramona got its ground game going in the third quarter but Helix forced a fumble and recovered on its own 30 yard line when it appeared that Ramona had re-taken the momentum. The Highlanders drove

70 yards and scored on the first play of the final quarter to take a 6-3 lead with 11:53 left on the clock. It was gut check time for the Bulldog offense. Drews, T-Bone Williams and Matt Lawler joined up with the offensive line of Hastings, Mike Hoover, Trae Rodriguez, William Rieve and Raul Briseno and blocked to put together a physical 80-yard drive. Ramona appeared to be stopped for a three and out, but Baldwin elected to let his line get a yard for Marco Cobian on a fourth and one on the Ramona 29 yard line. Ramona had to convert on several third and longs during the drive but each time the Dawgs’ line opened a hole or gave Cobian time to throw. The big play of
the drive was a 33-yard Cobian to Binkley screen middle pass. Brandon Gansch went the final six yards for a touchdown through a huge hole opened by the Bulldog blockers with 3:53 left in the game. T-Bone Williams sparked the defense with a sack and Helix tossed a fourth down desperation pass that Binkley intercepted with 2:33 left in the game. Ramona ran four running plays to take time off of the clock. “Helix has blocked five punts this year. We didn’t want to give them field position or a cheap score so we ran the ball on fourth down instead of punting. The way our defense was playing I liked our chances on a one play shot,” said Baldwin.
Since 1989 the friendly people at Richardson Recycling have enjoyed serving Ramona as a state certified redemption center, buying back all containers with the “CA CASH REFUND” on the label. As a metal scrap yard, they also buy iron and the non ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, stainless, lead and such items as auto radiators, rims, batteries and bumpers. We even buy white goods (appliance like water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers). For a $10 fee, your old appliance will be picked up from your driveway.
Helix got the ball back with 17 seconds left in the game. After spiking the ball to set up one final play, Helix threw a long pass and, instead of sacking the quarterback, Kerchner dropped into coverage and ended the game with an interception. Last week Baldwin said Kerchner plays like a warrior. “This win was about defense but we played enough offense to win. Marco (Cobian) played a complete game. He hit on some key passes, scrambled when the receivers were covered and did what it took for us to win. He didn’t lose his composure when he was sacked. That was a good defense he was seeing and he hung in there,” said Baldwin.
Cobian hit on 13 of 20 passes for 139 yards with no interceptions. He also had two rushes for six yards. Tanner Williams was on the receiving end of four passes for 39 yards. Binkley had three grabs for 45 yards. Lawler and Drews had two catches apiece. Kerchner had one catch for 19 yards and Justin Villagrana had one reception. Gansch led the Bulldogs with 16 carries for 45 yards. Cherek rushed nine times for 35 yards. T-Bone Williams had three carries to go with his lead blocking assignments. This week the Dawgs have a bye. They will return to the Dawg Pound on Oct. 11 for their homecoming game against Rancho Bernardo High School.

the score. “Then it was kind of back and forth,” noted the coach. Ramona had a 24-23 lead and match point. The referee’s judgment gave San Marcos the subsequent point to tie the game, but Ramona sealed

RHS grads make mark in college sports Mitey Dawgs achieve 5th consecutive win Blankenbaker 12th in college cross country debut By JOE NAIMAN Dylan Blankenbaker made his college cross country debut Sept. 21 at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo., and finished 12th among the 196 runners in the men’s university race. Blankenbaker, a 2012 Ramona High School graduate, is at the University of Oklahoma, which won the meet as a team. Blankenbaker’s first-ever race on an 8,000-meter course produced a time of 25:08.70, and he was fifth among runners from
NCAA Division I schools. “It was a smaller meet,” Blankenbaker said. “It was good to bring home the hardware, but it really wasn’t a true test.” “I think it went well for my first 8K. I think that I got out well,” Blankenbaker said of his college debut.
Voorhes helps Smith College to regional volleyball rankings By JOE NAIMAN Julie Voorhes, who was Ramona High School’s libero during the 2012 high school volleyball season, is now the libero for the Smith College women’s
volleyball team which is ranked in the New England Women’s Volleyball Association poll for the first time since the NEWVA rankings began. Smith College began the season with five wins — the first time the Pioneers have won five consecutive matches — and had a record of 8-1 prior to a three-match losing streak. The Pioneers ended that losing streak Sept. 28 against Framingham State to give Smith a 9-4 record. Voorhes had 14 digs in the match against Framingham. Voorhes began the season as Smith’s starting libero. Smith College is in Northampton, Mass.
The Ramona Mitey Dawgs football team won its fifth straight game, beating Escondido Brave Wolves 30-0. The Mitey Dawgs’ offense completed many pass plays made by Peyton Silva and Brayden Nungesser. The immediate lead secured by the Dawgs, allowed for many different combinations of players to get their turn at different positions. The defense had strong tackles made by Kai Hofstee, Garrett Pekelder, Jayden Lewis, Jason Jones, Mason Wrenn, Silva, Chance Mattson, Brayden Nungesser, Gabriel Lutz, Cole Mattson, Gabriel Muñoz and Colin Nung-

Westview. Despite allowing 17 goals, Ramona’s goalkeepers combined for 10 saves. Taylor Holas stopped six shots and Jack Sundberg captured four Wolverine attempts. Holas and Sundberg also received a lesson from their Westview counterpart. “Their goalie was good enough to put the ball where they needed to on the counterattacks,” Williams said. In non-cohesiveness matters, the Bulldogs also struggled with exclusion fouls in the penalty area; the Wolverines converted five of seven five-meter shots. The loss gave Ramona a 5-4 record. The Bulldog team will have another non-league match at a Palomar League pool Thursday, Oct. 3, when Williams and his squad travel to Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos.
