Cedar Creek trailhead water nears approval By KAREN BRAINARD Pending approval by one more bureaucratic agency, drinking water may be available at the Cedar Creek Falls trailhead in Ramona when it reopens, which is expected sometime next year. The trail and trailhead at the end of Thornbush Road in San Diego Country Estates are owned by the U.S. Forest Service and are outside any water district boundaries. No drinking water is available and rescued hikers have often suffered from heat-related issues. Although
the forest service advises hikers to bring plenty of water, many are unprepared for the long, strenuous hike and hot temperatures. Because the Ramona Municipal Water District (RMWD) has water tanks nearby, the forest service asked RMWD to provide water at the trailhead. An agreement to provide water was approved by RMWD, as well as the forest service, Metropolitan Water District, and San Diego County Water Authority. The See CEDAR CREEK, page 10

Burglars vandalize Barnett Elementary over Thanksgiving break Over the Thanksgiving break, vandals caused thousands of dollars of damage at Barnett Elementary School in what the Sheriff’s Department has classified a commercial burglary. Sheriff’s investigators estimate the damage at $10,000. That estimate could be high, Ed Anderson, maintenance and grounds supervisor for the Ramona Unified School District, said Monday afternoon, explaining district employees are trying to salvage the carpeting in the two flooded rooms
used by the school’s PTA. Workers spent 25 to 30 hours Sunday night and Monday cleaning the mess and drying out the flooded rooms and the carpet, said Anderson. Their work may save the district from having to recarpet the two rooms, but that has yet to be determined, said Anderson. “We’re hoping the wood’s not warped,” he added. The school district learned of the damage when a parent noticed water coming out of one of the rooms late Sunday

Benefit barrel race for Christina Roberts raises $17,000 By JOE NAIMAN
Mountain Valley Ranch was the site of a benefit barrel race for Christina Roberts, who has Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “It was a huge success,” said Selena Roberts. “It was a fantastic showing of support even in spite of the weather.” Christina, 29, is the daughter of Rick Roberts and stepdaughter of Selena Roberts of Ramona. She lives in Lakeside. Rain throughout the county the morning of the Nov. 10 event limited attendance, but approximately 75 riders competed in the divisional format barrel race, which earned Women’s Professional Rodeo Association sanctioning. Approximately $17,000 was raised for Christina Roberts. Christina Roberts has undergone chemotherapy and is taking radiation therapy. “She was there all day. She was a trooper,” Selena Roberts said. The younger Roberts has medical insurance but is independently employed and did not qualify for disability
or Medi-Cal, so all co-pays are out of her own pocket as is treatment beyond what her insurance covers. Selena Roberts noted that the support from the equestrian community enhanced the financial assistance that will benefit her stepdaughter. “What it does emotionally for you is tenfold,” Selena Roberts said. In addition to the money for medical expenses, local businesses donated goods and services for the benefit race. “Everybody in this town came forward and said:
‘What can we do; what can we give you?’” Roberts said. Selena Roberts was raised in Poway but has lived in Ramona since 1985. “This town is unbelievable how it pulls together,” she said. “That kind of thing doesn’t happen in every community.” While most of the money raised will be used for Christina Roberts’ medical expenses, the benefit event also matched the $10 entry fee for a survivors’ race where participants ran for cancer survivors or victims. The 48 entrants in that survivors’ race along with the
matching donation raised $960 for the San Diego Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. “It was just kind of our way of paying it forward,” Selena Roberts said. A committee organized the event, with Selena Roberts and Jeannie Malone taking the lead. A dog owned by Malone’s son, Mason, won a dog race, which was part of the activity. Ramona’s Rick and Velva Price put up a $200 prize for the race. Rachael Ross of Murrieta and her mare Billie had the day’s top time at 16.005 seconds. Ross won $586 for
winning the 1-D. Riders could also use their ride for side pot competitions with an additional entry fee, and the 43-year-old Ross won an additional $84 for first place in the masters (age 18-49) side pot. Loeghan Young of Littlerock had a time of 16.300 seconds to finish second in the 1-D. Linda Stenerson of Bonsall had a time of 16.557 seconds, which won both the 2-D and the novice horse/rider side pot for horses that had won less than $500 in their lifetimes. Stephanie Powell of Ramona won the 2-D masters side pot with a run of 17.079 seconds. Ramona’s Leannah Donaldson had a run of 18.655 seconds to win the 3-D in both the masters and the novice horse/rider side pots. Lisa Marie Miller of Warner Springs won the 3-D with a time of 17.017 seconds. Ramona riders Vanessa Aspin and Alexis Awrey took the next two positions in the 3-D with times of 17.053 and 17.065 seconds. Robin Carey of El Cajon won the 4-D with a run of 18.067 seconds, and Ramo-
na’s Raelynn Hamilton was second at 18.114 seconds. McKayla Brown of Lakeside won the youth 1-D with a time of 17.118 seconds. Bonsall’s Marcia Fuller had a time of 16.387 seconds to win the senior side pot for riders at least 50 years old.

W
hen he goes to sleep each night, he’s dressed in clean pajamas; when he wakes up each morning, his best friend greets him with a kiss. While this might be a normal routine for most 9-year-old males, it’s not exactly the way most horses get to live. But Chex—officially, Fed Ex The Chex, an American Quarter Horse owned by Cathy and Danny Pritchard—isn’t just any horse. “Whatever I ask of him, he will do,” says Cathy. And while most horse owners can brag that their horse, also, can do all that is asked, Pritchard has proven it— both at home and in the show ring. The relationship between Cathy and Chex has been special since the beginning. “Back in 2006, my trainer picked him out of several 3-year-olds for sale by a horse ranch,” says Cathy. She wasn’t even sure she wanted him. “He was little—and I wanted a big horse.” But Chex had been welltrained and bred for western pleasure, and he proved his worth a mere two months after she bought him. “We went to an open show in Poway, and he took high point overall. I was only showing western then.” Since then, their relationship hasn’t stopped growing. Cathy’s little bay horse grew to a 15.3 hand beauty. And Cathy quickly asked for more from him, as she decided to add English and trail to their show classes. Chex answered by winning Reserve Champion at the Del Mar Nationals for two years in a row. “As a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old, we showed English, western and trail classes on the Quarter Horse circuit. He also took Novice Amateur both years,” she says proudly. But after two years of success in those classes, Cathy once again decided to ask Chex for something more, and began showing on the Southern California Professional Horse Association (SCPHA) circuit.
“We did that for two years and he took overall Junior Horse and we won several Memorial trophies there.” After a couple of years doing the big shows, Cathy turned her attention back home and began competing at the local open shows. For the next two years, they showed at Lakeside, winning Overall Amateur and many championships. Last year, Cathy asked Chex for more when she began taking lessons and training him to jump. A member of the Ramona Santana Riders (RSR) for nearly 10 years, Cathy decided to return to competition at RSR shows, mainly because they offered jumping classes. For the 2011 RSR yearend awards, the pair entered 15 classes, including
English, western, trail, and jumping. Of those, they took 11 Champions, three Reserves and one Third place, winning in all disciplines. “This year I decided to try gymkhana and we are now doing barrels and poles. We are also doing Cowboy Challenges.” They’re already winning and placing in both of the newly chosen events. For 2012 RSR year-end awards, the pair is in the lead for the A-Division Gymkhana. In RSR Open shows, the pair is looking at five High Point Year End awards and two Reserves. Considering Chex as a family member she does everything with—as opposed to only a horse she shows—is no doubt part of the reason for the pair’s success. “He can do a barrel pattern, and then go right into a western pleasure class. Or I can put a child

on him and they can show.” But she adds, “I trail ride him all the time; he’ll go anywhere. We swim at Fiesta Island. I take him in parades. We ride down Main Street. He’ll carry a flag. I rope off him. He sorts and cuts cows. He slow spins. I ride him bridleless. We’ve even had a part in a movie. And I’ve been letting a 10-year-old show him this year. Whatever I ask of him, he will do. He’s just a good boy, what else can I tell ya?” “She’s had other horses, but he’s really a good horse,” says her husband, although he teases her about her choice of horse clothes. “Even if she does dress him up like a Barbie doll.” Cathy quickly explains, “Chex has allergies to everything under the sun. So he has to keep his ‘jamies’ on 24 hours a day.” The gelding is also quite the food hound. “He tries to eat everything in sight,” she laughs. “If you tell him you have a cookie for him, you better have it, or he will come after you.” At home or in the show ring, it is the trust and love between the two that makes the relationship such a winning combination. “I just keep asking, and he just keeps giving. So my goals now are to improve my speed, timing and accuracy in the gymkhanas and Cowboy Challenges. He’ll also continue to do rail shows with a youngster in Poway.” But whether they are competing at a show, playing around on the trail, or just hanging out in the backyard, Cathy is content to just have Chex in her life. “Most of all, I plan to just enjoy him. It was my time for God to give me the right friend. Chex is truly a gift from God. And he ain’t going anywhere.”

Regional water board to consider desalination contract Nov. 29 San Diego County Water Authority directors on Nov. 29 will consider approval of a 30-year Water Purchase Agreement with Poseidon Resources, the private developer of a proposed seawater desalination plant in Carlsbad. Board documents posted for the meeting, including a recommendation by water authority staff to approve the contract and related agreements, are online at http://bit.ly/QZlTy5. The draft Water Purchase Agreement was made public on Sept. 27 after nearly a year of negotiations between water authority staff and Poseidon. The desalination plant, which would produce 50 million gallons of fresh drinking water a day at a plant next to the Encina Power Station, has all permits necessary for construction. It would produce water by 2016 if
Desalination discussion • San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors will discuss desalination during a special board meeting that begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29. • Documents related to the desalination project, including the proposed agreement between the water authority and Poseidon Resources, are posted online at sdcwa.org/issue-desal.
the water authority board approves the deal. The proposed agreement sets terms for securing this new water supply while protecting water authority ratepayers by assigning appropriate development and operations risks to Poseidon, according to a statement from the water authority. The water authority has the option — but not the obligation — to purchase the plant for $1 after 30 years. In addition, the
agency has the option — but not the obligation — to buy the plant after 10 years. The plant would provide 48,000 to 56,000 acre-feet of desalinated seawater annually, and by 2020 it would account for an estimated 7 percent of the total regional supply or about one-third of all water generated in San Diego County. It would be the largest desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere.
Bella Mia cuts hair for band Stylists at Bella Mia Salon, Spa & Boutique raised $320 for the Ramona High School Band at their annual Haircut Fundraiser at the salon at 745 Main St. on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3. Salon stylists donated 100 percent of the proceeds from the fundraiser to the band program.
While desalinated water would initially cost more than current imported supplies, it would also be more reliable than supplies from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the water authority reports. Desalinated seawater would be a local, drought-proof source to help protect the region’s $186 billion economy and 3.1 million residents from water shortages. The project, including contract terms and costs, has been discussed at public meetings approxi-
mately 30 times since July 2010. The Nov. 29 board meeting will be the eighth public meeting since the proposed agreement was released Sept. 27. Under the draft agreement, the total price for the desalinated water — including related upgrades to the water authority’s pipelines and treatment plant — is estimated at $2,041 to $2,290 per acre-foot in 2012 dollars, depending on how much is purchased annually. An acre-foot is approximately 325,900
gallons, or enough to supply two typical single-family households of four for a year. San Diego County Water Authority is a public agency that is a wholesale supplier of water from the Colorado River and Northern California. It works through its 24 member agencies. Among its member agencies is Ramona Municipal Water District. The Ramona water board this month voted against participating in the draft agreement. See related article on this page.
Ramona board says No to desalinated water By KAREN BRAINARD Saying the cost would be prohibitive for Ramona, directors of the Ramona Municipal Water District voted against participation in a draft agreement for desalinated water at its Nov. 13 meeting. The draft agreement is between San Diego County Water Authority and Poseidon Resources, which has proposed building a desalination plant in Carlsbad. RMWD is one of 24 CWA member agencies. RMWD General Manager David Barnum, who represents the district on the CWA board, will take the no vote to the water authority’s Nov. 29 board meeting when a vote is expected to take place. He noted that the member agencies have weighted votes based on their water allo-
cation. Ramona has a 1.6 percent weighted vote while the City of San Diego has about a 40 percent share, he said, and majority rules. If 51 percent of the vote goes for desal water, the new source will become another supply in the water authority’s portfolio “and we would participate in that supply and in that cost,” said Barnum. He said RMWD anticipates desalinated water would increase rates 10 to 12 percent at minimum. The cost of desal water is approximately twice the cost of potable water, said Barnum, but it will add about 8 percent to the CWA water supply. “Ramona has reduced its water supply by approximately 50 percent,” said Board President Bryan Wadlington. “Water supply is not an issue for Ramona.”

Everyone's a Bulldog this week Ramona High School’s 2012 football team is making history. For the first time in 39 years, the Bulldogs are playing for the San Diego Section title. In 1973 they shared co-champion honors with Army-Navy. In 1970—that’s 42 years ago—they won the championship. It wasn’t easy getting where they are today, giving the players, their coaches, and their families and fans all the more reason to pop a button or two. They’re playing in a tough league, something their head coach did intentionally, and they’ve been up to the challenge, despite mid-season injuries that kept some players off the field for a time. Damon Baldwin, the team’s head coach, attributes the accomplishment “to a tremendous commitment by our players to be ‘all in’ and really just focus on the immediate and not look too far into the future.” He credits the team’s 16 seniors with helping the squad become a big family, and he describes all the players as extremely unselfish. “Everyone understands their role and works hard at their role for the goodness of the team,” Baldwin said Monday. “My staff is also extremely hardworking and cares about our kids as people.” As Baldwin points to others, Sentinel sports writer Bill Tamburrino credits Baldwin with keeping the team together during the injuries and three losses and “making them believe...He has a master’s degree in exercise science, so he knows how to get them in shape.” Former Bulldog star Ryan Morgan, who died after a motorcycle crash in June, has been a great inspiration to the team all season, noted Baldwin. “We know we have Ryan Morgan, No. 10, up above us working and pulling for us,” the coach said. Tickets for the game are $13 for adults and $9 for seniors and students. Parking is free. Advance tickets may be purchased at the RHS front office or on Nov. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the RHS stadium ticket booth. The game on Saturday will start at 3:05 p.m. Fans should arrive from 1:30 to 2 p.m. This team is the pride of the community. When the Bulldogs play Lincoln at Escondido High School on Saturday, it’s anticipated they’ll have as many as 6,000 Ramona fans in the stands. The 2012 Bulldogs have proven Ramona athletes can compete with anyone. Congratulations and Go, Bulldogs!

Two superintendents should be enough By JOHN RAJCIC Do we need four superintendents for our declining enrollment district of 6,000 students? I think not. Education-administration has become too specialized and costly, much like the medical profession. A superintendent and an assistant superintendent are sufficient for the central-administration of the Ramona Unified School District. The superintendent should be a hands-on person and be primarily responsible for the administration of personnel, curriculum and “managing” the school board. The Superintendent is the captain of the “ship.” The bulk of employees are under the leadership
of the principals and other managers. The negotiated personnel-contracts cover the entire gamut from salaries and class size to the bulletin boards the unions may use in the schools. Now curriculum and related policies. It is not too unusual to be at a board meeting when policies or changes to existing policies are on the agenda. The majority in attendance at most board meetings are district employees. One can hear the employees murmur “here we go again, another curriculum/ policy change.” Most district policies are a regurgitation of the Education Code and Government Code Title 5. Recently considerable staff and board time was spent amending the district’s

food service policy. The district food service policy should be nine words: “The district will endeavor to serve healthy nutritious food.” Detailed personnel policies may limit employee discretion and become the cause or an excuse for the employee not doing the “right” thing. Detailed codification of policy is the beginning of the demise of a dynamicvibrant organization. Most policies after the expenditure of extensive labor, to get them “just right,” reside on a shelf and gather dust. It could be argued that the massive State Education Code stifles innovation and creativity. The State Legislature, in theory, has plenary power over education and could abolish the Education Code. All professional organizations seem to engage in a lot of professional busy work. This seems amplified in school districts The assistant superintendent/business manager is administratively responsible for transportation, food services, maintenance & operations, budgets, insurance, accounting, and
other fiscal matters. The business manager is the superintendent’s representative in union contract negotiations. Contract negotiations at times may be a protracted conflict between unions and the board. Collective bargaining is a two-way street and the district must have appropriate reserves and the means to meet all financial obligations within the resources allotted by the state and community. The integrity of educational programs must be paramount. The superintendent keeps the principals and other managers informed of the status of negotiations and receives their input. I believe the superintendent being tangentially involved in the negotiation process gives the board and superintendent more freedom and appropriate “deniablity” when required for organizational effectiveness. Everyone is responsible for student safety and healthy learning environments. See VIEWPOINT, page 9

Sentinel Reader Opinion Against San Vicente Road realignment
Diane Chapman sent this letter to County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. Dear Dianne: I am writing to you in reference to the San Vicente Road Realignment project. For many reasons that I will state below, I am against this project. 1. It will ruin the bucolic nature of the road and entry into the area in which I live. I decided to live in the San Diego Country Estates due to the lovely and meandering San Vicente Road with the oak trees. To bulldoze this road and take out 150 or so oaks is wrong. I know that most of the people I talk to in the Estates are dead set against this. And they voiced opposition to the road project at a recent meeting with the SDCE board. Like the SDG&E power lines (150-foot towers) that were planned to go in across my street, we fought those and won and we will fight this. 2. The reason behind this waste of money and destruction

The argument for four superintendents is invariably centered around paperwork, mandates, and organizational needs. Most of the paperwork is basically a repeat of the prior year, requiring incremental changes and a date change. This is true with the budget and negotiated employee contracts. Two fewer superintendents would free up $400,000 to use for amortization of long-term debt or other priorities. At one time, I considered the budget the most significant policy statement the board made. I saw the budget as a political document in that it authoritatively allocated values, i.e, resources being finite priorities become the issue. Do we have salary increases or repair the roofs? Today with the advent of collective bargaining the
of a country road is not supported. There is no compelling evidence that this will solve any traffic accidents. In fact, you will only encourage people to drive faster. The curves in the road serve as a natural and self-regulating slowdown of the traffic. Once you take them out, you will see the speeds increase. 3. The burden to move the water pipeline beneath the road is $4 million. This cost, when amortized out, is a heavy burden for all of us. We are taxed enough already and our water rates are through the roof right now. This will hurt too many people to warrant the expenditure. 4. The cost of this unnecessary road is $24-plus million. In this economy, is it prudent to spend this kind of money on a road we do not want and do not need? Are we simply building roads to build roads? Or digging ditches and then filling them up for the sake of it? Please listen to us, Dianne. We do not want this road. If you lived here, would you want this to happen to your country neighborhood? I do not think so. Continued from page 8
negotiated contracts are the most significant policy statement agreed to by the board. The negotiated contracts account, indirectly or directly, for 90% of the budget. Obviously education is labor intense! Negotiating a “good” contract is important to teachers but as the iconic teacher union leader, Al Shanker, stated, “preserving public education may be more important than a ‘good’ contract.” My personal philosophy is anchored in optimism. People and school districts endure. When we are through learning we are through. According to the Registrar of Voters’ unofficial tally of the Nov. 6 election, Ramona voters elected John Rajcic to the school board. His four-year term will start in January.

Are the football fireworks necessary?
Are the fireworks at our high school football games really necessary? With all the to-do about budget cuts, teachers being laid off, etc., yet a good deal of money is being spent foolishly on fireworks. These fireworks are wonderful for the day that we celebrate our freedom, the Fourth of July, but so disruptive at football games. Babies, small children are woken up with a start, very scared. Many of them have nightmares off and on from it. Then there are the animals to take into consideration. Cattle will stampede in the fields, horses will jolt and try to get out of their enclosures, many being hurt in the process. Dogs will jump over fences, many getting lost forever. The fireworks on the Fourth of July, all of us have prepared for the noise, protecting our chil-
dren and animals the best we can. What happened to our young adults, older adults at these games putting their hands together clapping and shouting at touchdowns? Have we become so numb that we have to have fireworks to announce our wonderful football team, that the players have scored a touchdown? Judy Barrett Ramona Note: Ramona High Associated Student Body adviser Mona Snodgrass said that student-generated funds, not school district money, paid for the fireworks.
Thank you for help with surprise quilt
I wanted to say a big thank you to my family and friends for helping me with the surprise New England Patriots quilt. I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with a quilt but couldn’t work on it as he was always around. He then went

to work in Afghanistan and the sewing began. The quilt was supposed to go in the quilt show and he wasn’t supposed to be home until November, but for medical reasons he came home in September. The quilt was done except for the binding, so my friend Dottie Croman took it to her house and we both got it finished and put it in the show. My boyfriend was here for the show and helped with the taking down of all the quilts. My friends Candy and Larry Mittag detoured Ed around to the last row of quilts and Candy ran and got the surprise quilt down before Ed saw it and kept it at her house until he left again for Afghanistan. The funny thing is he won’t even see this in the Sentinel as he won’t be home for a couple of months. We will do our Christmas then and he will find out the journey of his quilt. Thanks again, guys. Love you much. Dolores Soto Ramona

Robert Warren Bremer 1921 – 2012
Bob Bremer passed away peacefully Monday, October 8, 2012, at Gate Manor of Poway, his loving home the past four years. Bob was born August 2, 1921, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent his youth on the east coast, enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served as a radio operator in the campaigns of New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Ryukus, Luzon and finished the war with the occupation of Japan, earning the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, AsiaticPacific Service Medal, World War 2 Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning home, Bob enlisted with the Merchant Marine as a radio operator, working mostly Liberty Ships returning personnel and war material from Europe. The 1950s brought Bob to Los Angeles. There he worked for the Rand Corp. Northrup Aviation and SDC Corp. where he met and married Barbara Parke in 1960. Barbara had two small children, Pamela and John; later they added two of their own, Robert and Leslee. Around 1965 Bob took a job at Lockheed Ca. Co. where he held many positions retiring in 1985 as a Division Manager for the Space Shuttle program at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Bob loved nature and animals and passed this love onto his children. He became a Benefactor of the San Diego Zoological Society and would visit the Wild Animal Park whenever he could. He loved the Park! Bob loved his kids, Pam, John, Rob and Leslee, and we have many wonderful and wacky memories of our adventures together. As with many of our loved ones, Dementia slowly steals them away. Bob’s stories and memories
slipped away from him, but not us. Through this confusing time of change, John’s wife, Phyllis, carried the impossible load of his financial and health care business needs, spending countless hours on the phone battling the many bureaucratic nightmares. This help allowed Rob to be by Bob’s side most days, including his last. The family would like to thank all those who loved and cared for our dad. We love and miss you “Pops”, God Speed. Our beloved Susan Morris, 51, left this world November 15, 2012. Sue was a major part of this community for over 20 years. She was that Kool “Special Ed” bus driver for RUSD, always shedding love and contagious laughter to everyone that encountered her. Many knew her and welcomed her crazy hat wearing, free spirit into their lives. Many loved her because of the fun, free, way she lived life. She tragically left behind all that she took care of and cared for. Her husband of 32 years, Dennis Morris, the love of her life; her only son, DJ Morris, the light of her life; her grandchildren, Cora, Kylie and Maddison, the joys of her life; as well as her father, Ron Howell; younger sister, Tammy; and a long list of lifelong best friends, family, and so many more. This is a crushing loss. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. last step is the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO). At its Nov. 13 meeting, the Ramona water board approved a resolution to seek LAFCO approval with the forest service picking up the costs of the LAFCO application. The forest service will also pay RMWD’s standard charges for water once it is available. Director Red Hager said there is no assurance that drinking water at the site will reduce the number of rescues and he feels sorry for the residents on Thornbush Road who are impacted by the hikers. “I’m not happy with it but I don’t know what other choice we have,” he said. Cedar Creek Falls trail and trailhead closed in July 2011 after eight helicopter rescues over the Fourth of July weekend, and a teenager fell to his death at the falls. That was just months after the trail was improved and opened to the public. The new trailhead on Thornbush Road ignited criticism when neighboring residents complained of excess traffic and of hikers partying, leaving trash, and damaging yards. When the trail closed, the forest service worked on a plan to better manage the site. In April, the trail was opened on the Julian side, off Eagle Peak Road. Brian Harris, public affairs officer with the Cleveland National Forest, said the forest service is still going through an environmental assessment process and Forest Supervisor Will Metz could make a decision on Ramona trail access in midDecember. One suggestion to monitor the crowds on the trail is to require hikers to obtain

permits. Harris said the trailhead could possibly open by June 2013. Even with the Thornbush trailhead closed, the Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire is still called to tend to rescued hikers who access the trail from the Julian side or are on Three Sisters Falls trail or at Devil’s Punchbowl, said Battalion Chief Burke Kremensky. He informed the water board at its Oct. 23 meeting that the department performed 32 rescues in 2011 and about 23 rescues this year, from January until August. “A lot of them—about 67 percent of them—are heat related,” he said. Kremensky said Ramona’s Station 81 in the Estates is the nearest station to the federal lands with an ambulance. Oftentimes, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department dispatches its ASTREA helicopters to rescue someone from the trail, he said, and brings them to Station 81, which is then responsible to transport the patient to the hospital, if need be. He said the average commitment time to Pomerado Hospital is about two hours. According to Kremensky, the patients are billed for medical care. Kremensky said some hikers are OK after they receive water at the station, but that still involves staff time. “And if they’re minors, we can’t just release them...someone has to stay with that minor until their parent or guardian picks them up,” he told the board. Directors commented on the burdens placed on the fire department for rescues that take manpower and equipment away from Ramona taxpayers.

The Eight F’s of Fitness There are two times during the year (fall and spring) that I like to take an inventory of eight all-important areas of your life and do what I call “The 8 F’s of FITNESS.” Ultimately anytime is a good time to do “The 8 F’s.” Fitness isn’t just about physical health. Fitness is about holistic health. That is body, mind, and spirit. Take out a pen and paper and write down three things you can do to improve these critical areas. Faith — What areas can you do better in your faith? Start with a daily devotional. Not a person of faith? Do this for me anyway. Stop, and in the quiet of your heart ask to become a person of faith. Step out and don’t make yourself the

end all be all authority for you. Search for yourself, visit a local church and be open. Family — Start a game or movie night with the family, go out on a date minimum once per month. Take your spouse out to lunch or show up at your child’s school for lunch. Start camping with the family. Fitness — Do one thing this year to be healthier. Make a better bad choice, pass on the burger and get a fried chicken sandwich. You’ll save 300 calories, and it’s a start. Go for a walk twice a week. Join a gym. I know a great one. Finances — Do you spend what you make or more? Put a little away, and forego instant gratification. Friends — Do you have friends who build you up or tear you down? Jim Rohn, motivational speaker, states, “You are the the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” How are you doing in that arena of your life? It sounds harsh, but “You can’t fly with eagles when you hangout with turkeys.” Function — Work and Career. How much do you love
your job? Be thankful you have work right now, but if you can’t stand your job, make an exit strategy to do something you are really passionate about. Go back to night or online school to make this happen. Fun — You must have an element of adventure or fun in your life. Take up a team sport, join a club, golf, craft, or do whatever it is you love. Future Legacy — What will you be remembered for? What family traditions and values are you instilling in your kids and those around you? What will the dash between the years on your headstone stand for? Your legacy starts now, not after you leave this earth. If you want to do this as an interactive exercise, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBKT5YwY7w0. Let’s make this a time that we take a strong look at the 8 Forms of Health (The 8 F’s) and resolve to stretch ourselves and make a commitment to be 1 percent better every day!
Since 1989 the friendly people at Richardson Recycling have enjoyed serving Ramona as a state certified redemption center, buying back all containers with the “CA CASH REFUND” on the label. As a metal scrap yard, they also buy iron and the non ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, stainless, lead and such items as auto radiators, rims, batteries and bumpers. We even buy white goods (appliance like water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers). For a $10 fee, your old appliance will be picked up from your driveway.

his month I attended the first World Food Championships at Bally’s Casino in Las Vegas. The WFC was hosted by “Man vs. Food” star Adam Richman and consisted of three days of world championship contests for Best Recipe, Best Sandwich, Best Side dish, Best Burger, Best Chef, Best Chili and, my favorite, Best BBQ. On the third and final day, all the winners of each category squared off at the “Final Table” for the overall World Food Champion. To qualify, teams had to be invited by WFC after winning contests throughout the year. In just the BBQ contest alone, there were 81 teams from 41 states, along with teams from Canada, Denmark and Australia. To lure those people from everywhere, a purse of $50,000 was offered for
each category. In addition, the Final Table competition added another $75,000, with the winner taking home $50,000. In April, Ramona resident Todd Rakos earned an invitation to the WFC by having the first place Rib entry at the Stagecoach Music Festival BBQ Competition in Indio. Todd invited my wife Kitty and me to complete his three-person team, so not only did we get to go, but we even got to compete! As soon as Todd and I checked in and were shown our 20’x40’ spot, I started laughing. You see, at most BBQ contests we compete in, we are allowed to sell samples to the public. This helps recoup some of the meat costs and entry fees on the days when you don’t win any cash prizes. It also allows the public that at-
3 Days at the World Food Championships tends to do what they came for—eat BBQ! At most of those events, we seem to get tucked somewhere way in the back. By the time people find us, they are either out of money or full. At the WFC, we were not allowed to sell samples and, of course, they put us directly in front of the main entrance. We were so close and up front that we were even mentioned in the local newspaper! The next thing that was different was the turn-in times. Normally, we turn in all four meat entries at half hour intervals, beginning at noon and ending at 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. This contest was spread over two days, with the Pork entry turned in at 4 p.m. on Friday and our BBQ Sauce entry turned in right after that at 4:30. Then on Saturday, we turned in Pork Ribs at 4 p.m. and Beef Brisket at 4:30 p.m. I only make mention of this because those are pretty late in the day, and with not being able to sell to the public, it made for some long days sitting around waiting for two things to cook! Fortunately, on Saturday we were able to walk around and watch some of the other contests. The Chili cooks were right next to the BBQ section, so we joined in on the People’s Choice Contest and tried a lot of great chilies. We made some new chili

friends with the people who were set up next to us and were thrilled when two of them made the top 10. We also watched a few rounds of the World Chef Contest. These were just like watching the chef contests on TV, but here they had three hours to prepare their meal and present it to a panel of judges. Even the contestants thought that was too long. We showed up towards the end of the round, so it was quite fun to watch. They let us get right up behind the judges when they were eating, so I kept offering to take a few bites and add my 2 cents, but they

never let me. On Saturday night, they brought all the Chili and BBQ teams together at the awards pavilion. Before the awards began, we got to watch the World Chef Final, which pitted a San Diego chef from the Lodge at Torrey Pines against Travis Brust, a chef from the Chesapeake Bay area. The San Diego chef did great, according to the judges, but not great enough to win the $10,000 first place prize and move on to Sunday’s Final Table. After that contest, they announced the top five chili teams in each of their three entries and then announced the top 10 teams overall, but not in order. From there, they all went out to Las Vegas Boulevard where the champions were announced in front of a big audience. After Chili, they did the same for BBQ. I quickly made sure that I had a clear path to the stage and also picked a few candidates to take our picture while we were up there. When we did not get called in the top
five for sauce, I shrugged that off. We don’t usually do Sauce contests and had no idea what they were looking for. When we did not get called for the top 5 in Ribs, I was surprised. I thought the ribs were spot on. When we didn’t get called for Pork or Brisket, I quickly assumed that we had taken sixth in all four categories and would surely make the top 10. Wrong! On a bright note, there were 14 teams who ended up worse than us. It definitely would have been a great weekend to sell samples. Overall we had a great time. It was a fun event that will only get better in the years to come. If you want to fit a lot of food contests into one weekend, check it out next year. You can find info on all the winners and more at worldfoodchampionships.com. Eddie Brisendine, a Ramona resident and Ramona High School Class of 1982 graduate, is a connoisseur of food and wine.

Girl Scout troop seeks community’s help to meet Feed Your Neighbor goal Ramona Girl Scout Troop 8009 is partnering with W.J. Bradley Mortgage Capital in Ramona to provide food for those in need this holiday season. As part of Girl Scout San Diego/Imperial Valley Council’s 100th anniversary, the Scouts are supporting the fight against hunger while earning their Feed Your Neighbor patch. “This will be done by completing a series of food and hunger awareness activities, holding a food drive from now until Friday, Dec. 7, and volunteering our services at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank,” said Danielle Shaw, Troop 8009 leader. According to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, more than 446,000 of San Diego County’s 3.1 million residents live in poverty. “These individuals face ‘food insecurity,’ which means that little or no food is available at home and they will face times when
they will not know where their next meal will come from,” said Shaw. “Our troop completed awareness activities calculating the cost of a fast food meal versus how many more items could be purchased at the grocery stores utilizing the same funds. Girls also learned about all the local Ramona farms, and how buying direct from the farmer yields not only a better, healthier food choice, but also saves money.” These exercises are helping the girls learn how to make better food choices at home, added Shaw. The girls set a goal to collect 500 pounds of food for the San Diego Food Bank and are reaching out to their community to help support that goal. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank feeds approximately 350,000 people each month. The troop asks the community’s help by bringing non-perishable food items to W.J Bradley’s at 1925
Main St, Ste 2, next to Big Apple Bagel. Most needed items are: •Canned meat & tuna, •Canned soups, •Canned fruits and vegetables, •Canned beans, •Dry cereal, •Rice, •Macaroni & cheese, and •Spaghetti. Troop #8009 will take all donated items to the San Diego Food Bank and volunteer their services there.

Bulldogs head to CIF football championships Ramona beats Serra High 56-7 in semifinals By BILL TAMBURRINO After posting a 56-7 victory against Serra High School on Nov. 23, the Ramona High Bulldogs head to the CIF football championships—the first time since 1973—at Escondido High School’s Wilson Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Bulldogs will play a familiar foe in the Division III finals: Abraham Lincoln Preparatory High School, better known to all as Lincoln. Kick-off is set for 3:05 p.m. During last Friday’s playoff game at the Dawg Pound, the Bulldogs set the tone early. Serra mounted its only drive of the game on the
opening series, which took the Conquistadors to the Red Zone, but they missed a field goal. After that, the only time Serra advanced the ball into Bulldog territory was on a special teams play. After trading possessions, the Bulldogs scored on a one-play drive. Nathan Cherek took a handoff and ran untouched for a 68yard touchdown. Tyler Vargas converted the first of his eight PATs and the Dawgs were in complete control and focused on making a bus trip to Escondido. The score was 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Ramona scored a school record 35 points in the second quarter to force a

running clock in the second half. On their first possession
of the second quarter Ramona marched 55 yards, setting up a 1-yard run by
Brandon Gansch. The key play on the drive was a Hunter McHargue pass to
Christian Drews that covered 37 yards. McHargue only threw the ball four times. His second completion was a 21-yard strike to Brandon Fitzpatrick. “We didn’t throw the ball because we were so far ahead, throwing passes might have been construed as bad sportsmanship,” explained coach Damon Baldwin. Serra gave Ramona a wake-up call on the ensuing kickoff when Stephon Zackiewicz returned Brandon Duarte’s kickoff 95 yards on a run that touched two sidelines. Zachiewicz was flagged for excessive celebration after the TD and Ramona took advantage of the penalty. Javier Dominguez returned the Conquistador kickoff for a 72-yard touchdown. From then on it was all Ramona. See FOOTBALL on page 29

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. on a lien, not on the property itself. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. Riley takes 3rd in state cross country meet, qualifies for Nike Nationals By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School senior Forrest Riley will have one more cross country race in his high school career. Riley finished third among the 184 Division II runners at the CIF state meet Nov. 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno with a time of 15:12 on the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course. That placed him sixth among the 961 runners from all divisions and qualified him for Nike Nationals, Dec. 1, in Portland, Ore. “I’m just so happy with how it all went,” Riley said. “I couldn’t have asked for better conditions, a better race.” Riley’s time was the fastest of any San Diego Section runner from any division. “He ran an incredible race,” said coach Steve Albanese. “Going into it there’s a lot of pressure just being ranked up in the top pack,” Riley said. He finished second among Division II runners at the CIF San Diego Section meet Nov. 17 and would have qualified for the state meet as an individual even if Ramona had not qualified as a team. The fact that Riley was running for his team rather than necessarily for himself took some of that pressure off and made him realize he was not alone.

Cherek scored on a 23- yard run to make it a 28-7 game. Enter the defense. Ramona’s defense held Serra to 99 yards total offense and seven first downs. That was not enough for Coach Stefon Pace’s defense. They wanted to score. A Brawnson Walter sack put the Conquistadors in bad field position. After barely missing on two safeties, the defense scored when Tanner Triplett recovered a fumble in the Serra end zone. With 6:38 left in the half, Ramona had scored on offense, defense and special teams, and they were not done. Another Triplett fumble recovery gave the Dawgs

Ramona High’s Forrest Riley runs 3.1 miles in the CIF state cross country meet, placing third with a time of 15:12.
“I knew they were all working just as hard,” Riley said. The Bulldogs as a team finished eighth among the 22 Division II schools competing at the state meet. “It was a really close battle. We were 29 points away from third place, so it was very, very close,” Albanese said. Team scores are derived by adding the positions of a school’s top five finishers. “Some of the guys ran really great races, but you
need all five,” Albanese said. “If any one of those guys is off, then it adds a lot to your score.” Redondo Union High School finished third with 183 points while Ramona accumulated 212 points. Ramona finished second behind Mt. Carmel at the section meet; the Sundevils had 194 points at the state meet to finish fifth. The individual results of the race came down to who happened to be leading or drafting at the critical time. “The first two miles I just let them do all the work,” Riley said. The lead changed repeatedly in the final mile. “We were just kind of surging off of each other back and forth,” said Riley. He had the lead with about 200 meters remaining. Riley was passed in the final 30 meters. Bryan Fernandez of Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta won the race in 15:09. A.J. Yarnall of Saugus High School finished second with a time of 15:10. “I’m ecstatic with my time,” Riley said. Last year, Dylan Blankenbaker, who was a Ramona High senior, finished second in the state race with a time of 15:10 while Riley placed 31st at 15:54.
In 2011, Tristan Stidham had a 65th-place time of 16:25; this year his time of 15:59 placed 27th. “Our goal was for him to break 16 and get in the top 30,” Albanese said. “He ran a pretty strong race. Didn’t have quite the kick he wanted to at the end, but I was pretty happy with how he finished.” Stidham is now a senior, and the 2012 state meet was his first 5,000-meter race under 16 minutes. In 2011, Cory Thomas placed 48th at 16:12; this year Thomas concluded his senior cross country season with 44th place after a 16:13 performance. Current senior Josh Spieker was the only other Bulldog to run in the state meet both in 2011 and this year; his 156th-place performance of 17:13 last year improved to 94th place and 16:38. Ramona’s fifth finisher was Max Edwards, whose time of 16:54 placed 118th in the Division II race and 13th among Division II sophomores. Isaiah Spieker placed 129th in Division II and 16th among Division II sophomores with a time of 17:02. Senior Wesley Hardin concluded his high school cross country career with a time of 17:06 to take 135th place. “All the guys had a successful season because they put in so much work,” Albanese said.
has been ‘Doing Right and Being All In.’” Baldwin said he told the team at the beginning of the training camp that there was something unique about them. “This team had what it takes to win in the playoffs,” he said. “There was no complaining on this team— every kid understands his role and gives max effort at doing them for the team. When a player went down, another stepped up and did the job. That is why we are where we are.” Baldwin also had praise for the Dawgs up front. “Anytime you rush for over 300 yards and score six offensive touchdowns with a running clock in the
second half, the linemen and tight ends and fullbacks have to be unselfish and committed to doing their jobs. Whenever you break a big run it is because the wide receivers are blocking down field. That is what ‘All In’ is all about.” The same can be said when 15 players make tackles on defense. There were very few solo tackles. Daniel Kemp, Walter and Travis Kerchner all had sacks. Garrett Binkley and T-Bone Williams had six tackle games, and Javier Dominguez was Javier Dominguez. A team that opened league with two losses and a cross league loss is going to the CIF championship
Fair competition equals success for Bulldogs The fall sports season has been good to and good for Ramona High School. With all sports returning to the Valley League, except football, once again every Bulldog team had a chance to compete. Competition is what sports and athletics are all about. Every fall sports team entered the season knowing that they had a chance to compete in the Valley League and compete they did. The Bulldog girls tennis team won the Valley League. They would not have had a chance to win the Palomar League. Several Lady Dawgs made all league and advanced to the CIF singles and doubles tournaments. They would not have had that opportunity in the Palomar League. The golf team was very young (no seniors) and was a work in progress. Like their coach, John Rathbun, predicted, the Lady Dawg golfers improved each week, won their share of matches, and competed well. They didn’t dominate, but they had a fighting chance and took that chance and fought hard.
Water polo finished the Valley League in second place with a winning record, 4-1, and were 19-10 overall. A second place finish in the Palomar League would have been highly unlikely. The Water Dawgs advanced to the quarterfinals in the playoffs. The Bulldog boys cross country team won the Valley League meet and the league championship. The Dawgs were 4-1 in dual meets and tied with Del Norte going into the Valley League meet. All seven of Ramona’s top runners made all league. That probably would not have happened in the Palomar League. The team advanced to the state meet and Forrest Riley finished third in the state. The girls cross country team also competed well in the Valley League. The Lady Dawgs finished tied for second place in the league and were 3-2 in dual meets. Five Bulldogs girls earned All Valley League honors. That probably would not have happened in the Palomar League. The team adSee TIMEOUT on page 30

the ball in Serra territory, setting up a McHargue 10yard touchdown run. The Dawgs went into intermission with a 42-7 lead. The Dawgs scored on a Gansch 9-yard run and took advantage of a Triplett interception to set up the final score. Gansch got the ball to the 2-yard line and Cherek scored to make the final score 56-7. Baldwin was ecstatic after the game. “This win is so gratifying because of how close previous teams have played. We had some heartbreakers in the quarterfinals. This team has overcome tough situations and never blinks in adversity. Our theme this season

Bulldog girls volleyball ends season with awards banquet By JOE NAIMAN After ending their season with a loss to West Hills in the CIF Division II quarterfinals, Ramona High School girls volleyball teammates officially parted ways and said goodbye to eight players at their awards banquet, held at Hanson Elementary School. “It was one of the most difficult goodbye banquets,” said Ramona coach Connie Halfaker. “It was a very emotional evening for me.” Halfaker explained that several of her seniors started playing with her in club programs prior to high school, so she has coached them for more than four years. The Bulldogs had seven seniors on their team, but Ramona will also lose junior opposite hitter Abby Roulier, who will be moving to Murrieta at the end of the semester. Roulier’s mother, Ramona novice team coach Leasa Roulier, has taken a position as the director of water resources
for the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and will also not be returning to the program for the 2013 season. The Nov. 14 volleyball banquet included dinner and a slide show as well as the awards presentations. The players voted on all of the team awards except for the Bulldog Award, whose recipients were selected by the coaches. Jeff Klauda is Halfaker’s varsity assistant coach, and Kyle Adelman coaches Ramona’s junior varsity. Two seniors shared the varsity’s Bulldog Award: setter Mikayla Derochie and outside hitter Jennah Hickle. “They’ve developed an intricate relationship of working together,” Halfaker said. “They both were just everything that the Bulldog Award is.” Hickle’s teammates also voted her Most Valuable Player, Floor Leader, and Team Inspirational Player. Abby Roulier received the Outstanding Offensive Player award, Sarah Kosut
and Julie Vorhes shared Outstanding Defensive Player recognition, and Cassidy Shields received the Outstanding Improvement honor. The junior varsity Bulldog Award went to Alex Kershaw. Nicole Donais was the JV’s Most Effective Offensive Player while Sydney Hickle was the Most Effecg
tive Defensive Player and Amanda Kotas was the JV’s Most Effective Server. The junior varsity Most Inspirational award was shared by Kershaw and Haley Collingwood. Ashton Beam was voted as Most Improved from among the JV players. The novice Bulldog Award was given to Hana Darrough. The novice play-
vanced to the CIF meet. Coach Connie Halfaker’s Bulldog girls volleyball team had a stellar season. They finished with a 21-12 record and finished 6-4 and in third place in the Valley League. The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals in the playoffs. The Bulldog football team had to remain in the Palomar League in order for the other RHS teams to enter the Valley League. It appears that the administrators in the North County are not all that concerned with fair competition and are very concerned about making money from the football gate. Their greed-
backfired on them. The Bulldogs overcame the odds and are playing in the CIF championship game for the first time since Ramona resident Jerry Van Zant guided the Bulldogs to the 1973 title game Ramona supports its own as well as, if not better, than any high school or community in the North County so the powers that be wanted our football gate money in the Palomar League. I find it ironic that a school like Torrey Pines, which probably has more boosters’ money than any other Palomar League school, doesn’t travel well, especially in football. Torrey Pines brought fewer fans to the Dawg Pound than any Grossmont League school or City League school that has traveled up the mountain. Most opponents brought more fans to frosh football games than Torrey Pines brought to the varsity game. So much for the “gate is everything” theory. Football coach Damon Baldwin, his staff, and players did a lot more than

travel well this season. Along with their gate receipts for Palomar League opponents, they brought a hungry and aggressive football team that took second place in the Palomar League. The league officials got a lot more than they bargained for in that deal. The Bulldogs’ success was just a harbinger of things to come. The JV team went undefeated in the Palomar League. Just having a fair chance to compete might have been the motivation for the fall teams’ successes. The fact is more teams had better records and more Bulldog athletes earned all league honors in the Valley League than would have in the Palomar League. Some teams in some sports can be competitive in the Palomar League but all of RHS’ teams can compete fairly in the Valley League. And, unless you are an administrator trying to balance the budget and make money off of gate receipts, that is what is important.
Season starts for Bulldog basketball By BILL TAMBURRINO Ramona High Basketball coach David Reichner has named his roster for the 2012-2013 season. Last season the Bulldogs went 8-18 overall and 1-9 in the Palomar League. This season the Dawgs will compete in the Valley League. The Bulldogs have four seniors on the roster.
