earing the tailcoats, top hats, bustles, satin dresses, hooped skirts, and cravats of another era, 92 people stepped back in time to enjoy an 1894-style Christmas dinner in Ramona Town Hall and experience a bit of the town’s history Saturday evening. “In this age where everything
is either wired or wireless, our goal here tonight is to take everyone back to a simpler time,” W.T. “Woody” Kirkman, Ramona Town Hall Board president, said in the West Wing of the 118-year-old adobe hall. The evening, the first of its kind in Town Hall in at least 50 years, included a four-course turkey dinner. “Starting with the Town Hall’s
first Christmas, local merchants donated apples and oranges to be given to each boy and girl in town — a tradition that continued into the 1930s,” said Kirkman. "This evening, apples and oranges have been worked into the menu in honor of this much simpler time.” Augustus and Martha Barnett See CHRISTMAS DINNER, page 16
A dispute between a Ramona property owner and the Ramona Municipal Water District over fees connected to grease buildup in a sewer line has a consumer advocacy group involved. “I just wanted to let you know we’re going to be here. We’re going to be attending board meetings,” Charles Langley, publisher and director of marketing for Utility Consumers’ Action Network (UCAN), told water board members at their Dec. 11 meeting. Langley and David Peffer, UCAN attorney, appeared at the meeting with Eugene Plantier, the owner of property at 109 10th St. Plantier leases the building at that site to the operators of the Mariscos Mar De Cortez Mexican seafood restaurant. The water district has asked Plantier to pay $33,755 for additional sewer EDUs (equivalent dwelling units) to bring the 10th Street property into compliance with the RMWD legislative code, and to obtain a waste discharge permit. Plantier, a Poway resident, has owned the property since 1998 and is fighting the fees. The water board agreed See SEWER FEES , page 21

Ramona man dies after car hits disabled SD school bus he was repairing in rain A 32-year-old mechanic from Ramona was killed when a car plowed into the broken-down school bus he was trying to fix alongside rain-drenched Interstate 805 in North Park. No students were aboard the San Diego Unified School District bus when the southbound 2005 Nissan Altima veered off the roadway on Thursday, Dec. 13, and struck it from behind near El Cajon Boulevard shortly before 7 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash left the repairman, John Friedas Joaquin Jr., gravely injured and wedged in the engine com-
partment of the bus, CHP Public Affairs Officer Art Athans said. The motorist, a 41-year-old woman, was seriously injured. Joaquin was working in the engine compartment of the disabled school bus under the El Cajon Boulevard overpass. The area was saturated with water and the driver of a 2005 Nissan Altima lost control of her vehicle and struck the rear of the bus, pinning Joaquin in the engine compartment, reported authorities. Responding paramedics found Joaquin alert and responsive with an open compound fracture of the left femur, the medical ex-
aminer’s office reported. He was taken to Scripps Mercy emergency department where he underwent surgery to amputate his left leg below the knee. He was taken to the intensive care unit where his condition rapidly declined, he went into cardio-respiratory arrest, and all resuscitative efforts were to no avail, the medical examiner reported. The motorist apparently lost control of her car due to driving too fast for the wet conditions, Athans said. Joaquin, who was married, lived in Ramona with his family.

Deputies respond to Newtown shootings with stepped-up presence at schools Sheriff’s deputies are maintaining a higherthan-usual presence at Ramona schools following the shooting deaths of 27 people at a Connecticut elementary school last Friday. Their patrol cars sat in front of schools and drove by schools, and deputies walked campuses. “This morning we’re contacting all our schools,” Lt. James Bovet at the sheriff’s Ramona station said Monday morning. “We have a deputy at each school in the community...We’re contacting the administration, making sure they
have what they need and seeing if there’s anything deputies can do.” The gunfire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14 killed 20 students and six adults. The shooter, a 20-year-old Newtown resident, also died. “Clearly, today’s shooting is deeply disturbing and causes us to cry out in anguish at the mere thought of what must be going on in Newtown,” Ramona Unified School District Superintendent Robert Graeff said in an email Friday in response to
Sentinel sets early news deadlines for its Dec. 27 and Jan. 3 issues To allow Ramona Sentinel staff members to spend Christmas Eve and Day, Dec. 24 and 25, with family and friends, the office will be closed both days. The office at 425-A 10th St. also will be closed New Year’s Eve and Day, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. As a result, the deadline for Our Town items, letters, and other news for the Sentinel’s Dec. 27 issue will be 10 a.m., Dec. 20. questions from the Sentinel. “Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers reach out to the families affected by this extraordinary tragedy, as well as to their entire community.” "District officials communicated with each school administrator, sharing with them reminders
about school safety and information from the county superintendent of schools,” said Graeff, adding that principals are communicating with staff and parents differently, depending on the site and grade level. Each Ramona school has detailed emergency plans for a wide variety of
potential threats such as fire, earthquake, and intruder alerts, and practice certain procedures on a regular basis, said Graeff. Each school also has a parent all-call system that allows school officials “to place phone calls to every parent at specific schools or across the entire district
A Ramona resident who as a youth attended Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown is asking the public to consider helping the many families affected by the tragedy. Debbie Labbe, who has lived in Ramona since 2001, grew up in Newtown and said it is the last place she would ever imagine such a massacre taking place. “We were all family. Everybody knew each other,” she said. On Friday, Dec. 14, officials say 20-year-old Adam Lanza forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary and went on a shooting spree, killing 20 first grad-
ers and six adults. He then reportedly shot himself. “I felt like I lost a child,” Labbe said when she heard the news. “I wanted to get on a plane and go home.” Labbe contacted the Newtown Savings Bank, which is partnering with the United Way of Connecticut on setting up a direct fund to provide support and resources to affected families. Labbe said checks or money orders may be made payable to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund and sent to: Sandy Hook School Support Fund, c/o Newtown Savings Bank, 39 Main St., Newtown, CT 06470.

Several weeks ago, we asked Ramona Sentinel readers to share their most memorable Christmas with the community. We received some heartwarming stories. They range from a grandmother of 11 who awaited the birth of her first child 55 years ago to a young girl who recently received “A Sister for Christmas.” One woman tells of the outpouring of gifts she and her son received during a particularly try-
ing period in their lives, another tells of the last words she shared with her father one Christmas morning, and a third recounts the story of a special gift her sister and brother-in-law presented nearly 40 years ago. We thank them for sharing their Most Memorable Christmas with the community, and we send best wishes to our readers for a most memorable son’s asthma, Kory developed an infection holiday season.
By Claudia Dufresne Some of our most memorable Christmas mornings are related to the amazing gift we received, like a new car, tied with a large red bow or a dream vacation to Paris. We also remember that mountain cabin, where it snowed on Christmas Eve and the whole family was together drinking hot chocolate. For my son and me the most memorable Christmas came when we learned
about the true spirit of the holiday, The Spirit of Giving. As a single parent of a chronically ill 5-year-old, my life was difficult. After I injured my back, and was no longer able to work, it became almost impossible. But on one early December day, I was pushed far beyond the limits of my experience. I was unsure how I was going to survive this one. Due to complications related to my

in the fluid of his hip. After seven hours in the emergency room, he was diagnosed and scheduled for surgery at midnight. As they wheeled him into surgery, I was so lost and couldn’t imagine how I would cope with what was to follow. He woke up the following morning, in a full body cast, screaming to get out. Several days later, I took him home to face the most difficult task, caring for him day and night, by myself. He would require I.V. antibiotics twice daily and have to be rotated several times during the night. The cast would rub on his slim frame and he would cry out every couple of hours from the pain. Still battling excruciating pain from my injury, I patiently cared for him for three of the
longest weeks of my life. The cast was to be removed on Christmas Eve. A few days before Christmas a group of professional women called and said they would like to come over and sing Christmas carols to my son and me. When they arrived, they were carrying bags of toys and food. Tears streamed down my face as an entire pickup truck full of treasures entered my home. I was amazed at the generosity of these strangers. The following day, a neighbor told me she was coming by with a few things for Kory and me. When she arrived, I learned that her church had selected our family as the recipients of the Christmas food

donation drive. She and her children proceeded to unload box after box of food, depositing them into my tiny kitchen. My refrigerator and freezer were full to capacity and we brought in shelves from the garage to house the overflow of canned goods. I was so overwhelmed, I could hardly speak. The following day, my sister arrived with a carload of food and toys, donated by her children’s preschool. The children brought in the food and toys and made paper chains and cards for Kory’s room. We decorated a small tree and hung the colorful construction paper cards on the wall. He was overjoyed to have his own tree. On Christmas morning, out of his cast, but still unable to walk, Kory
crawled out of bed and dragged himself into the living room. Beneath the tree were gifts I was unable to buy, and a bounty of food for Christmas dinner. Throughout the day, neighbors I had never spoken to arrived at my door. One by one they presented us with plates of cookies and small wrapped packages filled with toy trucks, coloring books and crayons. The food sustained us for over six months, but the memory of the season will remain with us for a lifetime. Each year when I decorate my tree, I place two small angels, tied to a package that year, at the top of the tree. And, I remember the Spirit of Christmas is in the giving to benefit others.
By Paige Ganci This Christmas will be my most memorable Christmas ever! Even though this is her third Christmas in our home, it’s the first one as my sister. In 2010 Savannah
came to live with us. We thought she’d only be part of our family for a few weeks. When she came into our home she could barely speak and now with lots of help she will talk to anyone and everyone.
I was an only child for almost 10 years. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to be a Big Sister. On Nov. 2, 2012, our family became complete with the adoption of Savannah. Life is different now, but the best thing is, she thinks we have been sisters all along. My little sister is a caring, cute, sweet girl, and I’m glad she found her forever family. I got the best Christmas present of all — a sister named Savannah! Paige is 12 years old.

Dreams
Come True
By Marlene Robershaw Being born in America many years ago, all my Christmases have been wonderful and full of joy, family and the riches available through each decade. But the one that stands out as the most memorable was the poorest and loneliest, but filled with joy unspeakable!! On Dec. 19, 1957, I was alone awaiting the birth of my first child. This was an event I had waited for since childhood. I was an only child and used to daydream about having a big family of my own. Then after marriage I had to wait until my husband finished college to start that family. Finally it was going to happen. We lived in a 25-foot trailer, my husband was working nights, and my labor pains began. What a joy, to be having a baby during the Christmas season! What should I do? Well, I had already planned to have my baby at home, not in a hospital, so I was in the right place. I got some writing paper out, and pro-

next day, 18 hours total. When the baby girl came into this world, I cried loud with joy, such a miracle, and as a mother, for a short time, I was part of God’s creation process. (I have since been blessed with three other children, and 11 grandchildren. Those early daydreams became reality.)
By Josie Eschleman Christmas 1973 would be considered the most celebrated for our family. Unable to have children of their own, my sister Sharon and her husband Tom Dugan introduced us to the newest addition to our family: Darren Thomas Dugan, born Nov. 24, 1973. We all rejoiced and immediately took this beautiful bundle into the family and our hearts. Sadly, Darren lost his mother to a congenital heart defect when he was 7 and his father was killed in a plane crash when Darren was
just 13. In spite of so much loss at such a young age, Darren grew into a happy, well-adjusted young man. Today Darren is serving our country as a commander in the U.S. Navy with a wife and three children of his own. Darren and his family are very much loved and celebrated by all of us, including a very large extended family. We are all so thankful that Sharon and Tom brought such a wonderful person into our hearts that Christmas, 1973.
A Wonderful Gift
Our Last Words
By Deanna Palmer Christmas morning 1952 was hectic. Mother was home from the hospital with the new baby. I had hoped for a baby sister. Instead I got another brother, David. I had asked Santa for a doll that year. “Once I got my doll, I would console myself with her,” I thought. Every year our uncle in New York sent a box of Christmas presents. We opened them first that Christmas morning. My younger sister, Dorothy, excitedly showed me the doll that Uncle Floyd had sent. My gift was a practical sweater. As we began to open the presents from Santa, I saw one box that was obviously a doll. I was so excited. The name, however, read “Dorothy,” not “Deanna.” I struggled to not show my disappointment. I can’t even remember what I got from Santa that year. After the Christmas service at our church, all our relatives got together, as usual, to go to Grandma’s house for dinner. Each of the children were always given a gift from their godparents. We
opened the gifts, one at a time, for everyone to see and enjoy. As it came time for Dorothy to unwrap her gift, we all watched as she unwrapped — twin dolls! After that, it was difficult to be thankful for the flannel pajamas that I received. Actually, I was glad when the day was over and I could go to bed. The next morning, however, my father announced that he had errands to run after breakfast and he specifically said that I could go with him. We went to the National Dollar Store on University Avenue in North Park (at that time there were no shopping centers and very few department stores). My father took me to the toy department. He stopped at the aisle with dolls. With a smile that I’ll never forget, he told me to pick out a doll. He explained that he had understood how I felt, and that it hurt him to see me sad because he loved me. Only then did I cry. Christmas morning 2007, I phoned my father to wish him a Merry Christmas. I told him that I loved him, too, and that we would be driving from San Diego to his home in Arizona the next day. Dear Santa, Our Christmas Wishes for Ramona Ramona Sentinel invited community leaders to share their Christmas Wish for Ramona in a Dear Santa letter or note. Following are the responses from the community leaders who did.
Dear Santa,
My Christmas wish for Ramona would actually be “three” projects being completed and funded. 1) Emergency Evacuation Route be finalized between the county and Ramona Municipal Water District after four years of jumping hurdles! 2) Secure the rest of the funding from the county and San Diego Association of Governments for the improved intersection on Highway 67/ Dye Road at our BIG meeting in January. 3) Design and build a Community Landmark Sign between 10th and 9th streets like they have in Little Italy, San Diego, and Encinitas — that spans over Highway 78, and be able to put banners on to promote Ramona events (Caltrans is now supporting it!). Jim Piva Chairman, Ramona Community Planning Group
Dear Santa,
For all the boys and girls of the Ramona Unified School District, I would request the very best Christmas season ever! Heaven knows we could use that! What would such a season look like? Let’s start with increased support for our local moms and dads so that they have plenty of time and resources to work with their children on schoolwork, to provide for their basic needs at home, and to continue inspiring them to achieve their very best at school each and every day. Second, let’s ask for increased support from the state’s legislators and resources so that we can staff, supply, and maintain each of our schools in a way that truly promotes, encourages, and in-
spires students to prepare for high school graduation, leading to productive careers as future citizens, taxpayers, and leaders. Finally, Santa, we could use a healthy dose of goodwill — to be spread evenly among our local residents, employees, business owners, and students so that all Ramonans can practice the values we cherish most — showing love for our neighbors and having peace in our daily lives. If you could deliver these gifts this year, Santa, then it truly would make Christmas of 2012 a season to remember! Bob Graeff Superintendent, Ramona Unified School District
Dear Santa,
My Christmas Wish for Ramona is that we never lose that small hometown love that comes out when we open the streets for the children at Halloween, when we pull together and help each other after the major fires that ripped threw our town. We should never give that up. God Bless and Merry Christmas. Say a prayer for our men and women who cannot be with their families. Nat Prassel Commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783
Dear Santa,
We at RMWD wish everyone take a moment this holiday to appreciate the beauty of our community, the love of our friends and family and hope that all Ramonans are blessed in 2013 with courage, health and happiness. David Barnum General Manager Ramona Municipal Water District
Dear Santa,
A Christmas Wish for Ramona Village Design: We have recently come to a pivotal event with the community of Ramona coming together in support of the Town Center Form Based Code Plan. My wish would now be for
new development, as it occurs, to enhance the walkability and scenic aspects of our town, which in turn would then help to define and enhance our community character. I would also wish that the process itself will now become a much more user friendly one and that new projects won’t take so long to get off the ground as they have for the past several years with the former old, outdated and cumbersome regulatory process. We now have a vehicle in place for Ramona to grow into a vibrant community within its town center. I’ve said for years that we have so many examples of what NOT to do — just drive down the hill in any direction. We now have custom tailored zoning and new Design Standards that are Ramona Specific. My wish is that these tools will help to fine-tune our town into a real showplace of form, scope and scale defining our community character. Rob Lewallen, Chairman Ramona Village Design
Dear Santa,
On behalf of the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association: The members of the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association are proud to be part of the Ramona and backcountry community. Here is our holiday toast to you — “May your world be filled with warmth and good cheer, this Holiday Season and throughout the year!” Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. John York President, Ramona Valley Vineyard Association
Dear Santa,
Now that the Library is built, my Christmas Wish is that the rest of the RICC (Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus) be developed, starting with a new Senior Center. It was the original dream that at the RICC, we would see seniors, teens and young children all interacting to enrich
the lives of each generation. Joan Gansert, President, Friends of the Ramona Library
Dear Santa,
Please bring our Ramona Bulldogs a football championship — they are great and deserve it! AND May all of us in Ramona find inner peace and happiness in this joyous holiday season ! Doug Kafka President San Diego Country Estates Association Board
Dear Santa,
Our Christmas wish(es) for Ramona are: - For all Ramonans to enjoy our first mural, stopping to find the heart icon in it, if you haven’t already. - To those who believe in our mission of encouraging economic vitality through an outstanding outdoor visual arts program, to consider volunteering to help by becoming part of the fundraising team, the historian, grant writing, coordinating students to paint mini murals on utility boxes, helping to organize events, and a host of other tasks. - To enjoy four more murals to be installed in the New Year, and for everyone to stop to look for the heart icon in each of them. - To begin to see some results of our efforts by increasing tourism, seeing people stop to look at our murals and go into our shops, instead of driving through to Julian and the desert without paying any attention to Ramona - For peace, safety and joy throughout the holiday season and the New Year. S. Elaine Lyttleton President, Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project Board
Dear Santa,
A Christmas Wish for the Ramona Bluegrass & Old West Fest: Our festival is coming up on its fourth annual this May 4th
and 5th. We are experiencing major growing pains and need a lot more help to keep it all on track. We are bringing in national music acts now, and our growth will be increasing as time goes on. My wish for this festival is that we get some more great Ramonans involved in putting it on. I wish that we become as large as our sister festival, Summergrass, which happens every August. I wish that we become known as one of the premier “Jamming Festivals” in the West. I wish that we have so many folks coming to camp during the festival that we’ll need to expand our camping area. I wish that more and more families come and continue to make the kids a huge part of this. I wish that we become known as one of the premier “Workshop Festivals” where kids of all ages can learn to play these fine instruments and become part of the various jamming groups. I wish that we continue to grow so that we can bring in more of the wonderful musicians from across the country to play in Ramona. I wish that more and more newbies come and get introduced to this wonderful form of music. I wish that our “Old West” part of the fest continues to grow and define itself while showing the history of what it was like to live in the Old West. I wish that we continue to work together with other Ramona musical events and make coming to Ramona for the music a must for folks from all over the area. I wish that this festival helps to define Ramona as a musical destination. But most of all, I wish that this festival brings prosperity to the many fine businesses of our town who we have as partners in this endeavor and that with the horses, wine, murals, grasslands, scenic beauty and the great folks who live and work here, it helps this community grow as a destination. Sentinel Reader Opinion Thanks for another successful fundraiser The Hot Spots, the fundraising arm of Intermountain Fire, flared up once more. Beth Edwards, Holley Birt, Sharon Greene, Lesa Sailors, Lora Tustison, Carol Waters, Gayle Wright, Charlie Teichert, and Ron Peterka working with the unofficial direction of Kim McLelland put on Novemberfest 2012 and were able to hand over a check for $9,500 to Board President Maurice Waters and Chief Jeremy Christofferson at the Dec. 12 board meeting. A huge thank you to all the donors and volunteer workers who made this event possible. The money raised will provide matching funds for large grants, or for otherwise impossible to fund department needs. We thank you one more time. A special thanks to Russ Meskell, Jamie LeClair, Joan Renaud, Sharon Greene, SDG&E, John Little Catering, La Finquita Winery, Ransom Bros Hardware, and Ramona Disposal for providing items for the live auction. Novemberfest became a necessity when a venue in Ramona was not available in October for a traditional Octoberfest. You can check www.intermountanfire.org for other department information. Thanks to Dr. Rivera As 2012 draws to a close, I note that Ramona resident Dr. Marcelo Rivera will be finishing up 12 years of continuous service as a member of the Board of Directors of Palomar Pomerado Health Care District. During that tenure, Dr. Rivera served as chairman of the Finance Committee as they developed and passed Proposition BB, which raised much of the funding for the new state-of-the-art Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, then chairman of the board as they broke ground for the new hospital, and now will be completing his four-
year term as chairman of the facilities and grounds committee as they opened the new hospital and now have broken ground for the new Ramona Ambulatory Care and Urgent Care Center due to be finished fairly soon across from our new library! During his term on the board, he constantly encouraged his fellow officers to closely examine the serious need for a medical facility up here in Ramona to serve the needs not only of Ramona residents, but those in the outback such as Borrego Springs, Ranchita, Santa Ysable and Julian also. Dr. Rivera, along with several others in Ramona such as Arvie Degenfelder kept the pressure on and now things are coming around full circle. Dr. Rivera also served Ramona as a 13 year member of the board of the Ramona Unified School District and has constantly been receptive to the needs of our community. I am proud to have him as my personal care physician and am quite sure that the Ramona community and its leaders join with me in a big thank you. Charles Teichert Jr. Ramona
Justice for Jimbo My kids came home yesterday telling me of a rumor they heard about this dog Jimbo, who was shot several times by sheriffs when he approached them with a tennis ball in his mouth. I was disgusted. Today I read the article in the Sentinel. And I’m upset. I’m sure if the Sheriff’s Department was there under different circumstances, they would not have shot Jimbo. Let me spell it out for you. A dog, no matter what the breed, is not a threat when they approach you with a tennis ball in their mouth. If you felt threatened, why not use your pepper spray? Or ask the owner to contain their dog? Just because the owner has broken the law, it
doesn’t mean you punich everyone and everything around him. Ms. Fox, I urge you to take some legal action. This is a terrible situation. Go to the media first, and get some folks behind you, and find justice for Jimbo. Gina Scruggs Ramona

Homeowners should protest new fire tax Dear Ramona Sentinel, My name is Dylan Fieger and I am a Ramona High School student working on a project for my Advanced Placement Government class. We are doing a participation in government for our semester project, and I chose to write a letter to you commenting about the new state fire tax being levied on tens of thousands of homeowners. I do agree with Dianne Jacob that the homeowners should stand up and protest the tax, being that it “stems from the state’s failure to adequately fund Cal Fire.” To my knowledge we should protest this, because we the people already pay a property tax, which helps fund our public safety programs. Thank you for all that you do. The papers are great. Dylan Fieger Ramona

Rebuttal to ‘Another View of Nov. 6 Election’ By Jim Fontana Well, I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Bisbikis regarding his observation that “there are many misinformed, and many more living in some alternate reality.” My only suggestion is that he take a careful look in the mirror. Our country faces many very serious challenges. And most agree that America would be more capable of dealing with these challenges given a vibrant economy. Who better to boost our languid recovery than a proven businessman who also has governed a state and shown obvious bipartisanship? So, call me crazy, but if I’m suffering from a serious illness do I consult a physician or should I call a community organizer? On the subject of Christianity: Americans are protected by the Constitution so that they can believe in anything they wish or, in fact, nothing at all. But, as Americans, we need to remember the historical significance of the JudeoChristian values upon which our great country was founded. Mr. Bisbikis has his head buried in

the sand if he missed the Democratic Convention vote on putting God back into the party platform. Anyone watching that debacle knows that nearly half of those present voted “no.” Are we a godless country? As a whole, I don’t think so. Mr. Bisbikis subtly plays the race card when he talks about slavery. Today most Americans are ashamed of that period and have moved their thinking past that awful chapter in our history. The Bisbikises of the world like to bring it up and perpetuate it as a reason for others who criticize our current president. The Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world love it because they wouldn’t have a job without the hate. Most agree that our dismal economy is currently America’s biggest problem. So to fix it, let’s focus on — I know, healthcare! Healthcare is very, very
important. But after four years we still have over 20 million of our citizens with no job or who are underemployed. Don’t you think job creation should have been the president’s first priority? (Would a proven businessman have made such a foolish mistake?) Again, Mr. Bisbikis proves his earlier observation regarding “misinformed” and “living in some alternate reality” when he talks about our “current fiscal disaster” and how Obama’s hands, in his view, are clean. Most of us realize that the economic difficulties we face were in the making before Obama took office. But did Obama then focus on resurrecting our economy? Did he work hard to craft regulation that would encourage business growth domestically? Did he set in motion the environment for businesses to repatriate the $1 See VIEWPOINT, page 10

Invisible Children Club motivates teen to travel to Uganda By PIXIE SULSER When school resumes each fall many students are full of stories revolving around family vacations, beach days, first jobs, and long lazy afternoons. Then there are those young people who have amazing journeys to tell about, students like Ramona High School senior Samantha Stotts. Sammie, as she is known by friends and family, chose to spend two weeks of her last high school summer traveling to Uganda as part of an outreach program organized by Believers World Outreach. Of the 48 people in her travel group who were from all over the United States and Canada, Sammie was one of 15 from San Diego. Her decision to travel to Uganda originated when she joined the Invisible Children Club at RHS. “Since then I had a fas-
cination with Africa and the people who live there,” said Sammie. “Then one Sunday morning at church, I saw signups to go to Uganda for two weeks in June 2012 with Believers World Outreach. I jumped at the chance!” That choice meant fundraising the $4,000 needed for travel expenses as well as preparing mentally and physically. “I had to get about eight different shots along with taking medicine to prevent malaria,” she said. “Twice a month I met with other people who were taking the trip. I had to buy the right kind of clothes, learn to try new foods, and prepare emotionally, which there was really no way to prepare for what you actually see there.” The group spent 15 days total in Uganda—a week in Jinja and a second week in Masaka. Both are villages along

shots to the children. “The most rewarding experience had to be when we visited a village across Lake Victoria. The people who lived there had absolutely nothing, but the children were so happy,” said Sammie. As an aspiring photographer, Sammie had her camera in tow to chronicle her journey, but she found the big Nikon made her the hit of the village. She explained that the best part wasn’t even taking the pictures but rather showing them to the villagers who have never seen their own likeness. “They do not own mirrors, which is something that here in America we g
take for granted,” she said. “The look on their faces when they actually saw what they looked like was truly heart- warming. There really aren’t words to describe the feeling I had in those moments.” The most challenging experience, however, was not when Sammie had to leave her own home to travel to an unknown country with people she had just met, but rather when she had to leave one of the orphanages. A little girl about 4 years old glued herself to Sammie’s side the entire two days she worked at the orphanage. “On the day we had to leave, the little girl walked
with me down the hill toward the lake. She knew I was leaving, and the closer we got to the lake, the tighter she squeezed my hand. When I climbed into the boat, she did, too, and one of the villagers had to take her back out. I just sat there and cried as the boat pulled away. I was so worried about her because she has no family. The last thing I wanted was for her to think I was abandoning her. I think about that day all the time.” In spite of the heartache, the shots, the fundraising, and the hours of travel, Sammie describes the trip as the “most amazing experience of my life,” and has signed up to return next year. “I honestly think every teenager should go to another country to do something for other people,” she said. “It really changes your outlook on life.” She described the people of Uganda as being personable and engaged in the moment. “They react from the heart,” she said. “My time with them has changed the way I view others, the way I spend my money, and even how I treat those around me is totally different. I am much more content and relaxed with life.” Sammie graduates in June and hopes to attend Texas Christian University to study business and photography with a goal of some day owning her own photography business.

trillion they have stashed overseas so that jobs could be created in this country? Did he reduce corporate taxes so that our tax rate isn’t the highest in the world? Did he uphold the “Right to Work” in the Carolinas so that Boeing could build a new factory there? Did he approve the Keystone pipeline project that would quickly create many jobs (take a look at North Dakota where there is an economic boom, despite the president’s inaction)? Well, no, he didn’t do any of these things. Instead, he concentrated on healthcare, a noble issue to be sure. But I maintain, it shouldn’t have been first on his to-do list. The “entitlement society” referred to by Ms. McKelvey, I suspect, is the one where dependency on the government has grown enormously under this admin-
istration — by design, in my view. Of course, just like the race card, Mr. Bisbikis wants to play the “war on ____” card (wealthy, poor, women, etc., you choose the descriptor) so as to mask the fact that the current environment in America encourages government dependence and discourages personal responsibility. Many people need help and should, by all means, get it. They should also be developed into individuals that outgrow the need for that help, if possible. As a country, we are perpetuating the problem. And correcting the situation does not seem to be a goal of this administration. By the way, I myself watch a number of news sources, including Fox News. Has Mr. Bisbikis ever watched Fox News? Somehow, I doubt it. But he should. Jim Fontana is a Ramona resident.

FalconRidge Equine Rescue: A sanctuary for unwanted, abused, and neglected horses I had horses growing up and decided that it was finally time to add one to the family again. I wanted to help the prevention of horses going to slaughter, so I did some research on rescue organizations and found FalconRidge Ranch. FalconRidge Equine Rescue is a nonprofit, humane equine organization. It is a sanctuary, rehabilitation and training center for horses located in the foothills of North Valley Center in San Diego County. A long but beautiful drive! The ranch was founded in 2002 to provide the care, rehabilitation, training, and temporary or permanent home to unwanted, abused, and neglected or slaughter-bound horses. Nicki Branch and David Lee Archer founded FalconRidge Ranch. Nicki rode hunters and jumpers as a teen and was a professional groom for Jimmy Williams and Rob Gage back in the 1970s. David is a professional horse trainer of 40 years and gives clinics nationwide. Privately funded by themselves and special donors in the past, the rescue incorporated officially as FalconRidge Equine Rescue Inc. in 2007. Their mission is to improve equine physical, emotional, and mental well-being so that the lives of horses are enriched and they have a positive, healthy future. Wanting to help the plight of
horses, Nicki adopted her first rescue horse, Lucky Nash, in 2000. Nash was an Arabian from New York who lived his entire five years of life in a stall inside a dilapidated barn. Focusing on the horses that were the most unwanted, such as blind, swaybacked, or deformed horses, Nicki also found a great need for someone to take on the severely abused, behavior problem, or dangerous horses that were faced with being euthanized. Nicki has worked with equine rescues nationwide, including the Equine
Protection Network and Equine Rescue Inc. In addition to being a professional trainer and clinician, David is an author and amazing friend to the horse. His book “Be True To Your Horse” offers the best of natural horsemanship training methods and shows how easy it is to get horses to understand what humans want. Nicki and David work hand in hand with volunteers every day and have a beautiful ranch where I went to visit and check out the organization. I was overwhelmed with the amount of horses there. The average number of rescued horses at any time at FalconRidge is over 50. Hundreds of horses have been saved, trained, housed, or re-homed by the equine charity in the past five years. A recent rescue case is Corkie, found abandoned by animal control officials and emaciated. Corkie appears to be a 16-year-old quarter horse gelding that arrived severely emaciated. He was slowly started on food again to avoid refeeding Syndrome, a condition that can kill starved horses if people feed them normal amounts of hay. The ranch follows UC Davis guidelines for refeeding starved horses which includes small portions of alfalfa hay only and water for the first week and increasing in the second week. They have never lost an emaciated horse. Corkie has been gaining weight

the ones that you are interested in before contacting them for an appointment. Most of the adoption fees are modest and some are free to good homes. So I picked about seven horses to look at and ended up coming home with two gorgeous paint mares. David gives you the low down on each one as far as behavior and rideability and Nicki can give you some of the background on their rescue if she knows it. My experience with them was very professional and smooth. At a time when houses are in foreclosure, Nicki and David are finding that many horses are abandoned in backyards and left to fend for themselves. They rely on monetary contributions to pay for veterinary bills and monthly feed bills. If you find that you would like to give a gift to a rescue organization this holiday season, this is a good one They are the largest adoption agency for horses in San Diego County — essentially the “shelter for horses.” FalconRidge is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, verified by GFAS, the only agency to accredit equine rescues in the world. Some of the healthy sound horses have been donated or given up for various reasons and will be rehabilitated, trained, and adopted out. During rehabilitation, the horses are exercised and properly socialized with other horses and people Some arrive extremely depressed, not wanting much to do with other horses or humans. strangers lurking nearby, etc.),” Graeff said in his email. “Unfortunately, not every situation can be anticipated, and every school is limited to the amount of safety features and staff we can include. Although we are very blessed in Ramona that we have never experienced a schoolwide tragedy remotely close to school shooting, we fully understand that we are also not immune to threats from off-campus or from on-campus. Maintaining close relationships with our local sheriff and fire departments, ensuring that our emergency drills are current and practiced, and reminding staff to continually stay on guard for potential threats are the primary tools that we use to proect our students and staff.” Graeff and Bovet talked
on Monday and reviewed emergency plans that are in effect and how their agencies tie into each other during a crisis, said Graeff — “to let them know we’re there for them,” said Bovet. They agreed to a closer sheriff/ school connection and pledged to get representatives of both agencies together after the holidays to share plans, recommendations, and suggestions, said Graeff. Deputies’ presence at the schools includes walking on the campuses and interacting with the students, said Bovet. While their presence at the schools is more evident this week, it is a continuation of an Adopt A School program Bovet started several months ago in Ramona. “Each deputy on a

The $150 fire fee was approved with a simple majority vote by the Legis-
lature and signed into law by Governor Brown in July 2011. “The fire tax is nothing more than political sleight of hand and clearly does not pass Constitutional or ethical muster,” said Jones, who represents the 71st Assembly District

shift will take one or two schools,” he said. The deputies introduce themselves at the schools and walk around the campuses. The stepped-up presence is a way to ease some of the tension the community may be experiencing after the tragedy in Newtown, Bovet said, adding, “our kids are so important." Parents of school-aged children who hear about the shooting deaths should be honest when explaining what happened, but re-
mind them that adults are always working to provide them with a safe environment, said Alfredo Aguirre, a San Diego County mental health official. These kinds of mass shootings are rare, especially at an elementary school, said Aguirre. Lives should not be lived in fear of dying in a similar attack, said UC San Diego psychology professor Nicholas Christenfeld. Parents need to remain a calming influence, said Aguirre. Children will be
aware that something happened, so parents will have to explain what took place, tailored to the child’s age, he said. With schools in session this week, students should be reminded that campus officials and law enforcement officers have response plans and are prepared, he said. “This horrific situation provides a unique opportunity for talking with children within the family, reminding them of family and school emergency procedures, how to inter-
pret news in the media, and methods for grieving during a national crisis,” said Graeff. Families should maintain their normal activities and make sure the television isn’t blaring news of the tradegy all day, said Aguirre. He advises parents to monitor their children for loss of sleep, loss of appetite, or changes in behavior. If a problem develops, they can call the county’s 24-hour Access and Crisis Line at 888724-7240.

District accepts applications for Early Start Kindergarten Ramona Unified School District will again offer its Early Start Kindergarten program, which allows early entry into kindergarten for children who will be 5 years old by February 2013. Early Start Kindergarten (ESK) will be offered during the second semester only, Feb. 4 through June 12, 2013. Upon completion of the spring semester of ESK, the children will attend a full year of regular kindergarten at their local school of residence. Offered at James Dukes
Application deadline is Jan. 9 Elementary and Ramona Elementary last year, the district will consider offering the program at one or more of the following school sites: •Barnett Elementary •Hanson Elementary •James Dukes Elementary •Mt. Woodson Elementary •Ramona Community •Ramona Elementary Students may request any school location, regardless of a family’s home address. No transportation
will be available through the school district. Students will be assigned to the program based on their birth date. Older children will have priority. However, the program will not accept transfers of students who are currently enrolled in a regular district kindergarten program. Space is limited, but if a particular school site does not receive the minimum number of applications, the program will not be offered at that site.
Deadline to request enrollment is Jan. 9, 2013. Requests for enrollment may be obtained from any elementary school office in Ramona Unified, from the Education Services Department at the RUSD District Office at 720 Ninth St., or on Ramona Unified’s website at ramonausd.net. Applications should be returned to the school of desired attendance. Anyone with questions may call Brenda Shirley, administrative assistant, at the district office at 760787-2012.
Fire Safe Council receives grant money to maintain fuel break The Ramona West End Fire Safe Council has been awarded a grant of $60,388 for a fuel break maintenance project on the west end of town. The grant comes from the California Fire Safe Council’s 2013 Grant Clearinghouse Awards, funded by the U.S. Forest Service. The West End Fire Safe Council request-
ed $13,508 and received matching funds. The grant money will be used to bring in inmate fire crews from the women’s Puerta La Cruz Conservation Camp in Warner Springs to maintain the original fire break they created in 2009. Although the inmates work voluntarily, they do so under the supervision of a Cal Fire
captain. The two-mile long fuel break starts at the Lemurian Fellowship off State Route 67, goes south paralleling Kay Dee Lane, then crosses Kay Dee Lane to head west to Rockhouse Road, and back to Route 67. The fuel break serves as a community defense zone in case of fire. When the fuel break was
created in 2009, inmates cleared about a 75-foot wide section along the strip, enough to keep a fire from jumping or running and picking up speed, said Cal Fire Capt. David Janssen at the time. The brush is cleared in a way that does not disturb roots and allows brush to grow back, he said, requiring the need for maintenance.

Approximately 200 supporters of the department attended, many dressed in traditional Bavarian garb. The event, hosted by the department’s auxiliary, the Hot Spots, was held at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center Pavilion and netted $10,000.
An oompah band played throughout the night, and John Little Catering provided guests with plenty of red cabbage, sauerkraut, and brats. Each year, the Hot Spots—which raises funds for the day-to-day operations of the volunteer department—delights supporters with new themes and twists for the event. This year was their ninth benefit for the department.

At a dinner and tour of the Barnett Ranch house the Parkers hosted earlier this year, they presented Town Hall trustees with a sepia illustration of the house by Ramona artist Sonia Peterson. The Parkers, Peterson, and Kirkman unveiled the artwork, hanging from a West Wing wall, at the dinner. rescinded the alcohol ban and he called for a toast: “To this magnificent gift bestowed upon our town so many years ago — the Town Hall — Cheers!” The evening netted approximately $4,500 for the building’s upkeep and renovation, and Kirkman thanked Barona Casino for its donation of $2,500, and Schwaesdall Winery for its sponsorship. As guests seated in the West Wing and Bank Wing enjoyed the evening, Marsha Anderson and Dottie Day, Kirkman’s mother and mother-inlaw, respectively, selected the Best Dressed winners: Jamie LeClair and Jim Cooper. LeClair wore a Victorian-
style satin dinner dress with a bustle and vintage boots. Cooper described his dress as a “1900s gentleman’s presentation,” saying everything from his raccoon coat to his pocketwatch is authentic. Entertainment came from pianist Pam Stubbs, who donated her time and talent, and her son, violinist Andy Stubbs. Members of Ramona’s All-Elementary Choir sang a medley of holiday tunes under the direction of their teacher, Donna Ransdell. After hearing a bevy of compliments about the evening, Kirkman said they may do it again next year. “Now that we have one under our belt, we just may do this again,” he said.

Gift-giving tips when buying toys help keep holidays safe ‘Tis the season when family members and friends are rushing all over buying presents for loved ones. San Diego County and Health and Human Services Agency officials have some giftgiving safety tips to keep in mind to help you avoid any unfortunate accidents this holiday season. “The holidays are a time to celebrate with family and friends and the last thing anyone wants is an unfortunate accident to happen,” said San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman
Ron Roberts. “Following some practical gift-giving tips will go a long way toward preventing accidents and injuries to young children.” C o u n t y Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., recommends keeping four main safety tips in mind when shopping.
The UPS Store
1. Read the product label. Make sure the toy is age appropriate and any warning label will give important information on safe use of the toy. Electronic toys should be “UL Approved.” 2. Think BIG. If you’re buying gifts for small children, make sure all toys and toy parts
are larger than your child’s mouth to prevent choking. Examine the size, structure and how the toy is made: plastic toys should be sturdy, make sure the label says “non-toxic” and avoid toys that are loud that could damage the child’s hearing. Even stuffed animals should be checked to make sure any parts are attached securely. 3. Always ensure that helmets and appropriate safety equipment are given at the same time as presents like skateboards, bi-
cycles, scooters, or roller blades. Never give a shooting toy without eye protection. 4. Even when the gift is for an older child or adult, if a young child is in the home, make sure that gift is childproof. Always assume the small child will have access to that gift. “Toys can be an important part of a child’s development as long as they are appropriate and safe,” said Wooten. “Common sense should prevail when giving gifts this holiday season.”

NERN schedules gelding 'Tis the Season clinic for Dec. 30 A reduced-cost gelding clinic will be held at Creek Hollow Ranch in Ramona on Sunday Dec 30. Private horse owners in need of this service are invited to participate in the event, which is co-hosted by National Equine Resource Network (NERN), R-VETS, and Tearsong’s Equine Athletes, Rescue and Sanctuary (TEARS). The cost to horse owners who bring their horses to the clinic will be $75, compared to an average veterinary fee of $150 to $300, said Shirley Puga, NERN’s executive director. The clinic will also take a limited number of cryptorchids and hernias, for an additional fee. Dr. Eric Davis, DVM of R-VETS, is volunteering his services to NERN and the community, stressing the importance of reducing the future equine population in the face of the nation’s ongoing economic woes. In 2011, NERN ran a pilot program for low-cost clinics in California, gelding a total of 92 horses, in eight locations around the state. This year, they have already castrated an additional 247 colts and stallions. Puga said her organization’s goal for 2012 was to provide low-cost castration for 250 or more colts/stallions in a series of gelding clinics. “At a time when many horse owners are struggling just to feed their animals, we felt that providing financial assistance in this area would be one of the most important contributions we could make, not only for existing horses, but for the future” she said. NERN-sponsored gelding clinics have been held throughout California communities, and clinics were recently held in the states of Washington and Nevada. To participate in the Ramona gelding clinic, area horse owners may contact NERN at nationalequine@gmail.com or 760-419-2462. For more information on the gelding program, or to donate, go to www.nationalequine.org

to waive $96,400 in mitigation fees for the additional EDUs. Peffer, in a letter to the board, said RMWD’s EDU-based wastewater rate structure violates California law and the grease dumping allegations are false. “This whole grease issue is essentially a red herring,” Peffer said. “This is about re-mitigation. This is about the shakedown of yet another small business in Ramona.” Peffer added that he will be keeping a close eye on this issue. RMWD staff reported that during its bi-yearly maintenance sewer cleaning inspection on March 23, it found significant amounts of grease within the recently installed sewer main on 10th Street. The 8-inch sewer line was added as part of the improvement project at 1018 A St. Staff used closed circuit TV to see where the grease was coming from and said upon reaching the restaurant property’s sewer lateral connection, it was obvious that the grease was coming from that location. At the Nov. 13 RMWD meeting, district staff showed a photo of a grease trap located next to the sewer cleanout, along with a can on a stick, suggesting the can was used to take grease out of the trap and put it into the sewer. Plantier, however, maintained that the restaurant has a service that cleans the grease trap interceptor every two weeks. Peffer produced copies of receipts from the sanitation company that removes the grease, dating back to March 16. The restaurant opened in February, he stated in the letter to the board. According to RMWD staff, large amounts of grease would require additional staff time to monitor and clean the sewer, and chunks of grease can block flow, cause overflow, and can clog pumps at the Santa Maria Wastewater Reclamation Plant. District Engineer Mike Metts told the board in November that the property has two EDUs, but based on current code, it would require 6.82 EDUs. To add

the extra 4.82 EDUs, the district calculated it would cost Plantier $33,755.18 in sewer connection and service fees. The water district also charges $20,000 per EDU mitigation fees for customers in the Santa Maria sewer district. Metts and the board’s Undocumented EDU Ad Hoc Sub-

Bulldog wrestlers defeat another top 10 team By BILL TAMBURRINO Coach Steve Koch and his wrestlers continue to be bad hosts. They hosted wrestling power Vista High School and for the second week in a row defeated a top 10 team in a rout as they beat the Panthers 4227 before a huge crowd in the Dawg House. Logan White got the Dawgs going by pinning Alberto Abzun in 4:57 in the 115 pound bout. It was White’s first pin in a varsity match. Vista came back with a pin of its own in the 120 pound bout as Jake Orozco beat Vince Adair by fall to tie the score at six. Martin Dowers then won an exciting decision as he came from behind in the third period to beat Trent Wernli (126) 8-7. Dowers had to fight off Wernli in
the final seconds to preserve the victory. Dowers gave the Dawgs a lead that they would not relinquish. Kevin Conroy won a masterful 5-0 decision over Justin Villalobos in the 132 bout. Conroy had a 2-0 lead after two periods but scored on an escape and a takedown to ensure the win in the final seconds. Arturo Osario (138) lost a tough bout to Josh Lawson. The two were tied at four going into the third period. After five bouts Ramona led Vista 12-9. Jake Ohnysty (145) and Cole Wethey hooked up in a close bout. Ohnysty led 2-1 after one period and 4-1 going into the final period when he came up with five points to pull ahead and win a 9-2 decision. With the Dawgs lead-

Ramona Pop Warner’s Pee Wee cheer and dance team earns fifth place honors at the Pop Warner Nationals.
Ramona Pop Warner’s Pee Wee cheer and dance team, the Dawg Pack, traveled to the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex at Disneyworld in Orlando, Fla., where it competed and took fifth place at the 2012 Pop Warner Cheer and Dance National Championships. After a couple of funfilled days in Orlando, the Dawg Pack performed in a category comprised of 16 cheer teams from all over the country. Ramona’s fifth place win earned high marks for tumbling, pyramid, and stunt complexity. “I am very proud of these girls—this is the first year of cheer and dance for more than half of this team. Each
one worked very hard and they all came together to form a very solid team— a championship caliber team,” said head coach Katherine Pecoraro. “Our success is due to the dedication and commitment of not only the girls, but also a group of special young ladies that graciously shared their time, knowledge, and experience to help the Dawg Pack realize its fullest potential—each current or former member of Ramona High School cheer, Courteney Lisowski, Kaelah Depaola, Alyssa Gaona, Koryne Martinez, and Julia Kosut were key to all that the Dawg Pack accomplished; we could not have done this without them.”
The next stop for the Pack, along with the Bulldawgs and Dawg Pound cheer and dance squads, is the JAMZ National Championships in Las Vegas. For more information about Ramona Pop Warner football and cheer, visit ramonapopwarner.net or call 760-440-0609.

With the score tied going into the final stanza, Stransky hit two free throws to give the Dawgs their only lead of the game. Free gifts this Holiday Season It is the Holiday Season (politically correct for Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza and other holidays that I am not aware of but will undoubtedly hear about in the Letters to the Editor) and I would like to give out some gifts that won’t cost me any money. During this season I am often referred to as a

Scrooge or a Grinch. Compared to me, Ebenezer and the Green Meany are nice guys. My first gift would be to San Diego State University’s football program. I would like to give them the respect that they deserve and in all honesty have earned. With all of the daily rags, imbecilic radio talk shows and
the local television hacks concentrating on the woes of the San Diego Chargers and speculating on why and when the Charger’s coach, Norv Turner, should be fired, they have pretty much ignored the feel good story of the football season in San Diego. Coach Rocky Long and his staff (which includes former RHS coach Kevin McGarry) and players (who include former RHS Bulldog red shirting freshman Kwayde Miller) have had a great season and are playing in the Poinsettia Bowl Dec. 20. The Aztecs have been mostly ignored. The sad thing is that people are complaining that the Chargers’ games are not sold out. My big-

explaining things. For the record Tony is one of the good guys. I am not saying this because Tony is much bigger than me or is a former student and a friend. I am saying this because he is an individual who always has and always will do what he thinks is the right thing to do. That is how he was raised. That is who he is. A Tony Newman Story: Tony does not drink holiday cheer of libations of any kind. However, there are at least two pictures of Tony with a beer in his hand. Those pictures are the result of carefully planned pranks orchestrated by Joe Cobian. Joe was a classmate and teammate of Tony’s when they were student/athletes at RHS in the
last century. Joe procured cameras and a beer can that he had previously emptied so that nothing would spill on Tony’s clothes. Joe handed the can to Tony on two occasions and said, “Hold this while I tie my shoe.” Joe then ducked so that he would be out of the picture. Joe was hoping for some blackmail rewards but Tony is bigger than Joe and the negotiations broke down. Joe pulled the prank twice, once in high school and once at their twentieth reunion. Happy Holidays Tony and Joe! Tony, don’t take anything from Joe when he tries to tie his shoe this holiday season. I would also like to take this opportunity to give See TIMEOUT on page 34

Girls basketball crushes Canyon Crest 61-23 By BILL TAMBURRINO The Ramona High girls basketball team played two non-league games in a tune-up for the Kiwanis Tournament with one loss and one win to improve their record to 8-4. Despite the loss, coach Dan Marshall praised the team’s play against Monte Vista High School. The Bulldogs bounced back from their loss to beat Canyon Crest Academy 61-23. “The loss to Vista was a wake-up call. We realized that we needed to work on our fundamentals. Our team responded by having a good practice and playing the kind of basketball that

we are capable of against Canyon Crest,” said Marshall. The Lady Dawgs returned to playing their trademark defense. Coach Ken Scheib directs the defense and his players limited Canyon Crest to single digit scoring in all four quarters. The Lady Dawgs had 29 steals against the Ravens. Christina Barrameda and Julie Ward both had five steals in the game. Barrameda also led the team in scoring with 18 points. The Bulldog girls showed a large home crowd what they are all about in the 7065 loss to Monte Vista. They got off to a bad start and then things became worse. Ramona trailed 13-8 going into the second quarter and was behind 42-24 at intermission. Just when it seemed that things couldn’t get worse they did. Midway through the third period Ramona hit the bottom and trailed the Monarchs by 29. Marshall’s team refused to quit. Trailing 63-39 with eight minutes to go in the game, Ramona mounted a
comeback. The Lady Dawgs used a weapon from years past: the 3 point goal. Niki Spring hit three bombs and Barrameda drilled two from beyond the arch. Couple that shooting with fierce defense led by Scheib and Hannah Farhat and the Lady Dawgs made a run. The Ramona girls outscored Monte Vista 26-7 in the final period but came up short on the scoreboard. The Bulldog girls were scheduled to open the Kiwanis Tournament against Carlsbad High School at Serra on Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.

Boys soccer wins 2 matches, ties 1 By JOE NAIMAN In a three-day period, Ramona High School’s boys soccer team defeated Mar Vista and Monte Vista while tying Steele Canyon. The matches gave the Bulldogs a 7-1-1 record, not including a Dec. 10 staffvarsity fundraising match. The staff-varsity match was held indoors with the girls varsity playing the first and third quarters and the boys varsity playing the second and fourth periods. The game was tied at 8-8 after the end of regulation, and the boys varsity scored in overtime for a 9-8 victory. “All the kids had a lot of fun,” said boys varsity coach Michael Jordan. The $186 proceed money will be split evenly between the boys and girls programs. The Dec. 13 home match against Mar Vista was a 6-1 victory for the Bulldogs. “We had two kids score hat tricks,” Jordan said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had this happen before.” Alex Medina and Andy Garcia each scored three goals. Morgan Schmidt and Brandon Duarte had two assists apiece, and Abraham Cabrera also contributed an assist. Ramona scored the game’s first goal before the Islanders obtained the equalizer. The Bulldogs held a 3-1 halftime lead. Goalkeeper Jesse Bonilla played the first 55 minutes and made one save while Tony Alba spent
the remaining 25 minutes in the nets and had two saves. Ramona began the Grossmont Tournament with Dec. 15 games against Steele Canyon and Monte Vista at Monte Vista’s field. Jordan told his players to think one game at a time. Ramona’s 2-2 tie against Steele Canyon involved the Cougars scoring the first half’s only goal on a direct kick which was redirected into Ramona’s net. “It’s a tough game to explain,” Jordan said. “We could have scored, we should have scored, three goals in the first 10 minutes. We had multiple opportunities.” Schmidt’s penalty kick tied the score in the second half, but the Cougars took a 2-1 lead on a 35-yard shot which was just outside of Bonilla’s reach. With about 15 minutes left Schmidt scored the tying goal off a direct kick play. The Steele Canyon game started at noon. The game against Monte Vista had a 5 p.m. start, and Jordan was pleased not only with the 5-0 win but also from the production of his reserve players. “It wasn’t a drop-off. It was kind of a pick-up,” Jordan said, noting that the fresh legs of his reserves allowed for a smooth transition from the tiring varsity players. Five different Bulldogs scored goals: Schmidt, Garcia, Alex Nastre, Colin
