‘Kind to Nine’ fundraiser falls short of hopes, fire station plans curtailed By Ashley Mackin Hopes for an interior renovation of La Jolla Fire Station 9 have been squashed due to a shortage of funds from the 2010-2011 “Give in Kind to Nine” community initiative. Scrapping its plans for a remodel of the firefighters’ living quarters at 7870 Ardath Lane, San Diego Fire and Rescue directors now foresee making only minor improvements to the station. La Jollan Sally Ricchiuti and her family spearheaded the Kind to Nine fundraisers with the goal of collecting $400,000. Spokesperson Wendy Robinson of The San Diego Fire and Rescue Foundation (SDFRF), which processes donations and distributes them as intended, said the

raised funds have come in gradually since 2010, and that it received a total of $82,000 from Kind to Nine as of Dec. 7, 2012. Ricchiuti began fundraising efforts for Fire Station 9 in 2007 after seeing the many structural improvements needed. In a press release issued in August 2011, Ricchiuti said, “They deserve a home-away-from-home that is as secure and respectable as they themselves are expected and required to be.”
Marengo Morton Architects donated architectural blueprints for the renovation in 2010. At that time, the plan was for “a complete renovation of the interior,” said Debora Marengo. This included a new sleeping area, kitchen, living room and office space. Marengo said the project is on hold until enough money is raised to proceed, but she doesn’t know what the total cost would be. Fire Station 9 has been

said it was informed by Greg Ricchiutti that no further events have been planned, although the Kind to Nine website is still up at kindtonine.org where donations can be made through PayPal. Signs directing viewers to the Kind to Nine website that were formerly posted in front of Station 9 have been taken down. Robinson said the fire department will proceed with the funds received to remodel Station 9. “The fundraising events did not raise as much as hoped and it became clear that the project would need to be downsized,” she said. “We’re very grateful for everything the Ricchiuti
family has done on behalf of our firefighters.” SDFR discussed the downsized plan at a meeting on Dec. 4. SDFR spokesperson Maurice Luque said no final decisions were reached. “One of the highest priorities is changing the dormitory layout to rooms instead of the way it is now with curtains dividing sleeping areas,” Luque said. “This would especially be appreciated by the crews, which now comprise both men and women, as opposed to years ago (when) there were only men.” n To donate to the San Diego Fire and Rescue Foundation directly, visit sdfirerescue.org

Coastkeeper seeks volunteers for data-collecting water project Founded in 1995, San Diego Coastkeeper protects and restores fishable, swimmable and drinkable water in San Diego County. To that end, it relies on the volunteers it trains to collect baseline data that will help identify polluted waters and reveal solutions to reduce pollution at the source. “The water quality monitoring program is almost completely volunteer based, and this year we trained our 700th volunteer,” said Travis Pritchard, Coastkeeper’s water quality lab manager. “Because our volunteers produce professional-level data, they become a vital part of the Coastkeeper team and of a larger effort by many community, government and corporate stakeholders to
understanding San Diego County’s water quality and how to improve it.” Anyone can become a volunteer. Those interested need to sign up for one of the water quality monitoring volunteer training sessions, which are held every other month prior to the sample collection. Once trained, a volunteer can help with water quality-monitoring events. To sign up, call (619) 7587743, ext. 131 or e-mail volunteer@sdcoastkeeper.org n The 2013 schedule is: • Jan. 26 (volunteer training) • Feb.23 • March 16 (training) • April 20 • May 18 (training) • June 22
• July 20 (training) • Aug. 17 • Sept.14 (training) • Oct. 19 • Nov. 16 (training) • Dec. 14 Coastkeeper is working to post raw and analyzed data at sdcoastkeeper.org, which allows the public to see the health trends of San Diego’s watersheds. For the first time this year, Coastkeeper compiled, analyzed and presented the data in its comprehensive Watershed Report. The report revealed that elevated concentrations of ammonia, nitrates and phosphorous were present in watersheds throughout the county. It also showed that the county’s creeks have high levels of fecal bacteria.

Shores Association votes to create beach permit review committee By Pat Sherman The La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) voted during its Dec. 12 meeting to form a seven-person La Jolla Shores Commercial Use Permit Committee. The group will explore how to issue and enforce a consistent, fair permit procedure for all commercial vendors and fitness camps at La Jolla Shores Beach and Kellogg Park. The committee will be comprised of three LJSA
board members, three scuba divers and one representative from the La Jolla Shores Merchants Association. During the past year, La Jolla Shores residents questioned whether private scuba schools that use the beach should be required to pay their share for upkeep of the public amenity. Kayak and surf school businesses are already regulated by an RFP (Request For Proposals) process. Divers will return to the

next LJSA meeting on Jan. 9 with their committee nominations, to include a representative from the San Diego Council of Divers. LJSA members are proposing that instructional camps and scuba schools pay a permit application fee to operate on city parkland in beach and bay areas. The fee would be nonrefundable and regulate the days and dates activity is permitted. Permit fees would be $163 per year or $93 per quarter. Dive instructor Al Blake argued that divers offer instruction in swimming pools and classrooms at alternate locations. They only come to La Jolla Shores for four test dives, and should not be charged a permit fee, he said. “That is not a commercial activity there, Blake said. “I don’t (collect) my money at that beach. My money is already paid way in advance. All we’re doing is diving. However, LJSA Chair Audrey Keane said surf camp and kayak operators also collect money at their offices, yet still pay the city to use the beach. The four dives at La Jolla Shores are part of the package students are sold by dive schools, she said. About $305,000 in fees is

A lot more than $305,000, Keane said. “We know that it costs millions of dollars to staff that beach and clean it up. Rod Watkins with Scuba San Diego asked if Councilmember Sherri Lightner could request that funds collected from Shores’ operators be diverted to a fund specifically for use in the Shores, though Keane said the LJSA has already been told that can’t be done. Asked who is responsible to assure people operating in
the Shores have the proper permits, lifeguard Sergeant John Sandmeyer said lifeguards patrol the park when they can, though in summer their main duty is to focus on the beach. It was suggested that a wristband system identifying those who are part of a business that has paid its permit fees would make enforcement easier. Board members and attendees also discussed establishing a “code of conduct for scuba divers. A sample diver code established two decades ago in Laguna Beach was distributed to those in attendance. Laguna Beach’s code was posted on signs, and seemed to curb “inappropriate diver activity, such as changing in

public areas, it was noted. Also discussed was the issue of whether additional fees collected by the city for surf camps and kayak operations are available for park improvements. The LJSA hopes to examine the ways these fees, which are placed into the city’s general fund, are allocated for such improvements, maintenance and services. • For more information on how general fund money is used, visit the website bit.ly/generalfundinfo n Diver parking issue: It also was noted that Ocean Enterprises, which offers instructor-assisted “fun dives,â€? has a large truck parked on the street near the playground, advertising its services. The truck, which Keane said is an “obvious commercial truck,â€? is parked there mornings until 11:30 a.m., when a 15-minute parking limit goes into effect. Werner Kurn of Ocean Enterprises said the truck is necessary due to the volume of students coming to the beach for dives. “The truck idea came up to make the whole operation go smoother,â€? Kurn said, adding that if students drove their own cars that would take up more spaces. Sandmeyer said the parking lot at Kellogg Park was recently restriped, providing clearly delineated spaces for larger vehicles. “I’d gladly park it in the lot,â€? Kurn said. “It’s easier for us. We wouldn’t have to rush students to get out by 11:30 so we don’t get ticketed.â€? n Fundraiser for local surfer: A fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at Voulez Vous Bistro in La Jolla Shores to raise money for Stephane, a local surfer who is undergoing kidney transplant surgery. A Bridge For Kids hopes to connect teens in need with sponsors By Ashley Mackin La Jolla husband and wife team Michael and Tammy Nance recently founded, A Bridge For Kids, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit pairing teens struggling financially with people who are willing to sponsor them. A Bridge For Kids defines financial need as being eligible for the Free Lunch program at San Diego schools. The only other requirement, Michael Nance said, is the teens be “someone who wants to help themselves, who wants to better themselves, and who just lack the financial resources to be able to do that.” A Bridge For Kids sponsor will help pay for the basic necessities of life and educational, athletic or artistic supplies.
Although in its infancy, A Bridge For Kids has already found a success story in Stephanie Hernandez. A student qualified to attend university — Michael Nance said she received nearly straight As this year — Hernandez could not afford the application fees. After meeting with her, A Bridge For Kids reached out and found two sponsors willing to contribute. They gave her a total of $550 so she could apply for each school on her “wish list.” Each teen applicant must have an adult advocate fill out the application form, Michael Nance said. This can be a friend over age 18, teacher, parent or caseworker. The applicant is then interviewed by
A Bridge For Kids volunteers, who will try to find them a sponsor. The sponsors must have similar interests to be paired with a teen, and can decide how actively they want to work with the students. Michael Nance said pairing sponsors and students based on common interests is part of what makes A Bridge For Kids different from other charities. “There are a lot of teens out there who need to be helped and we’re always going to be looking for the next sponsor to provide those financial resources,” he said. Another aspect of what makes A Bridge For Kids different, said Tammy Nance, is that 100 percent of all donations go directly to the
students. The Nance Family and supporters paid for all its foreseeable administrative and operational costs for the next few years. In a press release, she wrote: “I firmly believe that if the average person understood that foster youth, for example, only receive $100 a year for clothes or that many kids are unable to play a high school sport because they can’t afford the equipment or that incredibly gifted teenagers are choosing not to apply to an Ivy League school because they don’t have $100 for the application fee, we would be inundated with donations.” For Information about levels of sponsorship, ways to donate, and items in need, visit abridgeforkids.org

Homelessness continues to haunt OUR VIEW
On the Web
ast week, KPBS reported a new study on homelessness by HUD, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which found San Diego had the third largest homeless population — 10,013 homeless — of any American metropolitan area in 2012, surpassed only by New York City and Los Angeles. San Diego was also listed in the top five for its increase in the number of homeless people, compared with the previous year. The HUD study was based on annual counts of homeless populations and a “point-in-time” calculation — one day in January when HUD workers across the country counted 633,782 homeless people in shelters and on the streets. One in five homeless Americans lived in California, giving it by far the nation’s largest homeless population.

The HUD report said people who are “chronically” homeless make up 25 percent of San Diego’s homeless population. That figure is comparable to what’s found in other metro areas. In La Jolla we have our “chronic” homeless. Most of us adopt a “live and let live” attitude about their presence, thankful for our own homes and hearths. We lend a helping hand through our faith communities when the spirit moves us. We donate to the food bank. It’s not at all like Linda Lingle, the former governor of Hawaii, admonishes, “We have come dangerously close to accepting the homeless situation as a problem that we just can’t solve.” Or is it?
Show kindness: Be a light to the homeless In this season of peace and hope is a world and a city recently broken by darkness, evil, despair and indifference. Thanks to God we are not that city. We have light, goodness and heart. (In a letter to the La Jolla Light in the Dec. 13 issue) Mr. Lockhardt writes that it’s “disgraceful” to have homeless in La Jolla and at the crossroads of our beautiful city. He advocates
On Dec. 11, the La Jolla Light received a phone call from a La Jolla resident alerting us to this scene across the street from Vons on Girard Avenue, allegedly left by a homeless person. ‘This is the sixth time this month, I’ve witnessed this,’ she said. ‘Whose job is it to keep cleaning up these dumps? What a disturbing problem this is becoming. Maybe if you print a photo, somebody will do something.’ Ashley Mackin
OUR READERS WRITE that the San Diego Police Department become “proactive” and clean up our sidewalks of the “loitering, littering and lodging.” For me, seeing the homeless and less fortunate in La Jolla and San Diego is a reminder to be ever grateful for MY shelter, food an clothing, and those who love and care for me. Lest, we forget, Jesus also became homeless. I would humbly suggest that the letter writer
read Danielle Steel’s new book, “A Gift of Hope: Helping the Homeless,” and perhaps even do a small portion of what she did in San Francisco. It might unlock a heart. And just maybe, we La Jolla residents can be that hope, if not in money, food and clothing, at least in a smile and greeting to the ones who have so little. Cindy Peterson La Jolla P.S. Thanks go out to Captain Brian Ahearn and the San Diego police officers for all they do for us daily! Merry Christmas to all.

Winston the Wonder Dog returns Let Inga tell you ...
W
inston, our beloved but massively high maintenance grand dog, is back in residence again for one of his prolonged visits to Camp Grammy and Grampy. My younger son, Henri, and his wife, Erica (Winston’s owners) and my husband, Olof, and I are all besotted with Winston. But we are especially besotted with him when he’s at the other party’s house. Winston, I should note up front, is wonderfully affectionate (if overly enthusiastic) around people, and is a breed recommended for young families. In fact,
we have not a moment’s concern about him with our young grandchildren. But he is definitely leash aggressive and has a tendency to charge our front gate when other dogs come by looking not unlike a pit bull on steroids. I’ve read on numerous occasions that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. How about bad trainers? Winston has been failed by more alleged animal experts than you can count. During one of Winston’s lengthier sojourns at our home, I chronicled the saga of our finally hiring a trainer advertised as the Cesar Milan of San Diego who, to my horror, showed up with a shock collar. (http://www. lajollalight.com/2011/09/21/ winston-the-wonder-dogmeets-his-match/) Over four months, I spent three hours a day dedicated to training Winston and by the time he went back home, he was vastly improved. for $200 per hour of dog training and hundreds of hours of my time, I thought he should be at minimum a candidate for canine canonization. You know: Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Winston. Alas, even with his behavior collar turned up to Defcon One, nothing will dissuade Winston if a big black dog or small white fluffy one (Winston is a specialist) should cross his path. Of course, he can’t actually get to them (leash, gate), but he’s willing to die (and/ or hurl Grandma face first to the pavement) trying. As soon as Olof and I learned that the kids were going back East for Christmas with the other grandparents this year, it was a foregone conclusion we’d end up with Winston for another of his Holidays in La Jolla. By Tom Murphy La Jolla Youth Baseball League When it comes to youth baseball in La Jolla — or any not-for-profit organization for that matter — time, talent and treasure are the keys to organizational success. We are very fortunate in our community to have a decent amount of all three. As LJYB gears up for its 61st season, a core group of volunteer board members are canvassing the parents of recent registrants, seeking help with coaching teams, serving as team parents, and raising funds for equipment and field support. With older facilities that are owned by the City of San Diego, there are endless maintenance and repair projects, not to mention the upkeep of some of the most beautiful baseball diamonds in the region. Last month LJYB was the lucky recipient of Jamie Abrams’ time, talent and treasure. Abrams and his merry band of Troop 4 Boy Scouts, descended upon the Pony field like a well-oiled machine. Two years ago, Abrams was a star player on the field, only this time he was on a mission to complete his Eagle Scout project. An Eagle project must have a positive impact on a community, and is a requirement for becoming an Eagle Scout — the highest rank one can
achieve in the scouting program. It requires achieving many significant accomplishments along the way. Abrams and his crew designed, constructed and installed a pair of helmet cabinets and bat racks for the home and visitor dugouts at Pony field. They also added new signage, and, using Google Maps, measured the field distances in order to install new distance markers on the outfield fences. The project took weeks of planning and preparation with much of the construction and painting being done at home with a makeshift carpentry shop set up in his garage. When it was time to install the unit,
which was about 8-feet-wide by 5-feethigh and 1-foot-deep, the team had to fortify the fence and secure the unit. As a final touch, Abrams left instructions for the league so other volunteer teams can build additional helmet and bat rack units at the remaining fields. In a letter to Abrams from LJYB President Jim Benham, Benham wrote, “Congratulations on getting one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout. That is a very impressive accomplishment and one that will last a lifetime.” Benham grew up in Boy Scouts and spent several years in Troop 4 with his son, Austin, and so has a keen appreciation for the Eagle Project.

For Jane Trevor Fetter family and community get her love and loyalty Jane Trevor Fetter is a career volunteer. She served on the boards of the Junior League of San Diego (past president), Las Patronas, Catalina Island Conservancy, San Diego Foundation, San Diego Crew Classic Foundation, Stanford Athletic Board, and Francis Parker School. Growing up, she was president of La Jolla Elementary School, attended Francis Parker, and graduated from The Bishop’s School in 1954. Jane Trevor Fetter She played tennis, swam, and acted at the La Jolla Playhouse and The Old Globe. She graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in economics in 1958. She married her high-school sweetheart, Thompson Fetter, and in 1960, they built the home they still reside in and where they raised their three children — Trevor, Margi and JJ. She has chaired the Crew Classic Brunch (which she is chairing again in 2013), The Fish Ball, The Reuben Fleet Science Center’s 25th Anniversary Gala, The Charity Ball, the San Diego Foundation’s 30th Anniversary celebration, and the 1986 RITZ (which she is chairing again with her daughters in 2013). Jane and Tom have seven grandchildren ranging in age from a fourth-grader to college students attending Stanford and Yale.
What brought you to La Jolla? My family was originally from Detroit, Mich. In the early 1930s, my uncle James Trevor and his wife Helen, sought a warmer climate. They fell in love with La Jolla and were charmed with Cliff May and his architecture. They bought at least three Cliff May homes in the area — among them two on Hillside Drive. (These homes later were called the “munchkin houses.”) In 1939, my father, Walter Trevor, contracted tuberculosis. It was felt that the best doctors and the best facilities to treat this disease were in San Diego and so my father, mother, Marian, and I moved to one of the homes on Hillside Drive. Two years later, my grandparents and my Aunt Dorothy moved here. What would you improve in town? I would snap my fingers and wish that everyone in La Jolla was kinder and more compassionate — the way I remember them being when I was a little girl.

The 115-foot California Princess is one of two yachts used for the dinner-dance cruises.
Flagship Cruises introduces a new menu By Kelley Carlson here are a number of dining establishments that serve gourmet food and offer stunning ocean views along the coastline of San Diego County. But very few are actually on the water. Flagship Cruises & Events is one of the exceptions, offering dinners, brunches, luncheons for private charters, and fare for other special occasions aboard yachts that cruise along 25 miles of San Diego Bay. The signature event is the 2.5-hour dinner-dance cruise, Tuesdays through Saturdays. (Mondays are added in the summer.) Reservations are preferred, but prospective guests are also welcome to walk up to the company’s booth on Harbor Drive and buy tickets. Once their passes are in hand, people are directed to board either the California Princess or the Spirit of San Diego vessels. The 115-foot California Princess — used during evenings when fewer patrons are expected — contains two enclosed, climatecontrolled decks that feature Honduran mahogany and cherry wood, along with modern, yet classic teak furniture. The enclosed decks are connected by a “sweeping Cinderella” stairway; above them is a 1,600-square-foot, open-air observation deck ideal for dancing, socializing, and taking in the views of downtown San Diego. In many ways, the Spirit of San Diego is similar, yet it’s the larger of the two yachts at 146 feet. It provides 360-degree views from each of its three levels and has an interior that showcases rich mahogany, brass and lush carpeting. As guests board their vessel, they are greeted by crewmembers and presented with chilled flutes of bubbly. Patrons are then asked to pose and smile for souvenir photos.
T The salad consists of young local greens, green apple julienne, California sun-dried cranberries, chiffonade of fresh basil, candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles and apple cider vinaigrette.

On The Menu Recipe Each week you’ll find a recipe from the featured restaurant online at lajollalight.com Just click ‘Get The Recipe’ at the bottom of the story.
n This week’s recipe: Flagship Cruise’s Roasted Butternut Squash Soup While waiting for the cruise to begin, some wander over to the cocktail bar, which offers selections such as the Fish Bone, a mix of Malibu Coconut Rum, blue Curacao, melon liqueur, orange juice, sweet ‘n’ sour and lemon-lime soda, and served over rocks. Others head to the observation deck to drink in the surroundings. A half-hour after boarding begins, people take their seats in the main dining area, as the yacht leaves the dock and begins sailing; then it’s time to dine. Executive Chef Brian Gist recently introduced a menu with all-new appetizers, entrees and desserts. “Guests have always told us our food was beyond anything they would have ever expected on a bay cruise,” Gist said. “We’ve taken that feedback and used it to shape our extended menu and to offer even more of a restaurant experience.” Because Flagship is owned by San Diego’s Engel family, Gist believes it is important to
support other local businesses and turns to area vendors for ingredients and other items. He acquires vegetables and fruits from Moceri Produce, sustainable seafood from Chesapeake Fish Co., and bread and desserts from St. Tropez Bakery. Furthermore, everything is cooked onboard, from raw to finished product. The dining experience kicks off with appetizers such as the rich and creamy Hazelnut Encrusted Baked Brie with Black Mission Fig Port Wine Jam, and the Grilled and Chilled Asparagus with Creamy Burrata Mozzarella and Fresh Tomato-Basil Concasse. Among the entree choices is Pan Roasted Baja California Jumbo Prawns and Goat Cheese Orzo Pasta, featuring prawns marinated with basil, garlic and olive oil, then seared and roasted, and served on a bed of Goat Cheese Orzo Pasta. Another selection is the Char-grilled FreeRange Chicken with Tomato and Onion Jam, served over sautéed wild arugula and alongside a Ramona sage-infused whipped red-skin potato. Children’s dinners, for ages 4 to 12, include macaroni and cheese, chicken fingers, two large chocolate-chip cookies and fruit. Meanwhile, the meal is enhanced with low-key music. Guests who are celebrating special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries or engagements are recognized. To wrap up the dinner, there are several dessert options, including Classic Cheese Cake and Driscoll Farms Berries that are sprinkled with sugar and soaked in their natural syrups; and the dark chocolate-andcaramel Pecan Brownie and Justin Starboard Chocolate Ganache, topped with a scoop of vanilla-bean ice cream. Once guests are finished eating, they head to one of the upper decks for dancing and views of the nighttime skyline.

Hershey Felder plays Lincoln’s last doctor in ‘An American Story’ By Lonnie Burstein Hewitt Three years past the bicentennial of his birth, Abraham Lincoln is still going strong. Lincolnrelated books appear regularly — there are an estimated 16,000 of them already — and this year, there are two new films: Steven Spielberg’s Oscarnominated “Lincoln” and the Tim Burton-produced opus, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” There’s even a “Thinkin’ about Lincoln” rap song. But there are hardly any theater pieces about our 16th president, who was assassinated in a theater in 1865. Hershey Felder is filling that gap. A Canadian actor/ pianist/playwright/composer best known for his one-man shows playing keyboard luminaries like Gershwin, Bernstein, Beethoven and Chopin, Felder is stepping away from the piano to tell the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. “An American Story” will run for a month at the Birch North Park Theatre, starting Jan. 4. Set in New York City in 1932, “An American Story” is narrated by Dr. Charles Augustus Leale, who, as a young army medic in 1865, happened to be seated near the president’s box in Ford’s Theatre the night Lincoln was shot and ended up attending to him during his
Pasadena Playhouse last spring, has been expanded, with the character’s age advanced to 90, so he could show more perspective on the event that shaped his life, and American history. Felder is also the show’s producer, backed by a production team of San Diegans who were on board in Pasadena and will tour with the show from here on. All are connected with The Old Globe Theatre, where several of Felder’s solo shows were staged. “They’re great people and close friends,” he said. “Doing the show with them, it’s like summer camp every day.” For this production, he has rented a house in La Jolla, where he can hold meetings

He couldn’t save Lincoln — nobody could — but he stayed by his side. “It’s a great story, an important story about what it means to be American,” Felder said. “What touched me is what Leale said about that, in his own words.” Felder discovered Leale on the Internet, while researching another subject for a possible play. “God bless the Internet,” he said. “I was on the Library of Congress website,

He only told the story once, and once I read it, I was hooked.” Leale is the first nonfamous person Felder has played, and the first one he truly likes. “All the others had to show their wares,” he said. “Leale was a quiet man, a really good guy, and there’s something to be said for that. He went on to create a hospital, he treated patients largely free of charge, and everything he did, he did quietly, never wanting to call attention to himself. My father is like that.” Billed as a world premiere, this is actually the second

He also has a home in Point Loma, along with homes in New York and Paris, all of which he shares with his wife, a former prime minister of Canada. “I’ve been all over the world,” he said. “But what I like best is returning here.” At the beautifully restored Birch North Park Theatre, he will be able to recreate the look of Ford’s Theatre, where he played Gershwin, almost a decade ago. 2013 should be a busy year for Felder, who will be directing plays in Boston and Chicago and taking “An American Story” on the road. FROM 10 QUESTIONS, B1 Who inspires you? My parents, although deceased, continue to inspire me. My mother taught me to always seek knowledge and my father told me that I could accomplish anything I wanted. He used to whisper in my ear that if men and women weren’t equal — and he thought they might be — then women were better. In an era when there was some prejudice against women, this was very empowering. My parents gave me great coping skills and the humor to go with them. If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite? I would start by making sure that the date was good for Jesus and Siddhartha Gautama. (I like to know what is ahead.) When we had a confirmed evening, I would check to see if either wanted to bring a guest. I would urge Jesus to bring his Mother and Father. I would, of course, include my husband Tom (he is very
helpful at a dinner party) and my daughter JJ who lives next door. I’d want someone in the kitchen to help me serve dinner, as I’d really not want to miss the table conversation. If either Jesus or Siddhartha didn’t bring a guest, I’d ask other family. What is it you most dislike? That would be dishonesty and immorality. What is your most-prized possession? I have two; my health and my husband. What are you reading? I always worry when someone asks what I am reading. I have heard way too many eulogies where they discuss the books on the bedside of the deceased … usually The Bible, “War and Peace,” and some other erudite classic, so, I have a friend poised if she hears of my demise to rush to my house and check my bedside table. But I just finished the latest John Grisham and the latest Charles Finch, and I am reading a fun book called “At
Sea,” by Laurie Graham. I have lots of favorite movies, but probably No. 1 is “Best in Show” by Christopher Guest. What is your most-marked characteristic? Since I still picture myself as a nerdy, chubby, little girl with glasses and braces, I asked my children about this — the answers were competitiveness, confidence, wit, and an incredible memory. What is your motto or philosophy of life? My motto is to live my life every day as though it appeared the next on the front page of the morning paper or the La Jolla Light. What would be your dream vacation? My dream vacation is six weeks on our boat at Cherry Cove in Catalina with my husband, my dog, my cat, warm smooth water, fun tennis games, good books, and our family visiting in their own boats. The best part of this vacation is that I really get to do it every summer.

Have you read any of these books with a La Jolla-edge this year? By Ashley Mackin Several La Jolla authors published tales in 2012. Here’s a list:
romance and the inevitable twist. There is an undeniable Stephen King influence, bear in mind.
n Richard Platt Platt lives in town with his wife, poet Susan Platt. His book, “As One Devil To Another,” is a series of letters between the devil and his protégé, in the style of “The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis. He also wrote the play “Ripples From Walden Pond: An Evening with Henry David Thoreau,” which premiered at the Cygnet Theater in Old Town San Diego earlier this year.
n Benjamin K. Bergen Bergen is an associate professor at UC San Diego in the cognitive science department. Integrating psychology, philosophy, theory and humor, his “Louder Than Words” explores different approaches to meaning; why certain things mean more than others and how we use language and visuals to express that. It is an elaborate exploration into how the mind works.
n Jesse Kellerman Kellerman’s “Potboiler” is his fifth novel — the former four were international bestsellers. Opening with funeral arrangements and a search being called off, “Potboiler” sets the stage for a complex thriller — complete with double crossing,
n Hal Taxel Taxel chose La Jolla as the setting for his novel, “A Legacy of Death,” wherein a Greek Orthodox family torn apart by jealousy and murder, live a life of drama exceeding soap opera levels. It contains strong language and sexual imagery.
City Council approves apartment complex expansion in La Jolla On Dec. 4, the San Diego City Council unanimously approved plans to expand the La Jolla Crossroads apartments complex at I-805 and La Jolla Village Drive. Developers Garden Communities agreed to provide extra noise protection measures in response to feedback from both District 1 Councilwoman Sherri Lightner and the community. The apartments will meet LEED Silver standards and include environmentally friendly features such as recycled water for irrigation. “By working together, we improved the project for all involved — Garden Communities, the future residents of La Jolla Crossroads and the surrounding neighborhood,” Lightner said.
