"This new law will reduce our bird size to about half. Every building that does have caged birds will have half the caged birds by Jan. 1," Nevarez said. Several other states have legally challenged the new regulations because out-of-state egg farmers who sell in California have to comply. Spotlight on Local | Businesses Seasonal parties, gatherings keep carpet cleaning business busy By KAREN BRAINARD Whether cleaning customers' carpets and upholstery before guests arrive for the holidays or after seasonal parties, We Care Carpet owners Lou and Cindy Caliguri said they strive to provide exceptional service. "We stand by our company motto and philoso-

phy: 'We clean every home as if it's our own,'" said Cindy. To help customers with holiday preparations, the Ramona couple is offering 20 percent off on carpet and upholstery cleaning and 25 percent off tile and grout cleaning. They also realize spots can show up on the car-

pets after the festivities. "If you decide to have your carpets cleaned before the holidays by We Care Carpets, we will come back and touch up where your Christmas tree was for a minimal charge," said Cindy. The new year is a good time to get carpets and upholstery "freshened

up," Cindy noted. In business for 23 years, the Caliguris use a stateof-the-art, heavy duty, truck-mounted steam cleaning process and fastdrying technology. "In addition, we only use top-premium cleaning products," they said. "With every cleaning, we include a carpet pre-spray

LT\SZPĂ„JH[PVU WYVJLZZ and special pre-spotting for the most outstanding results." Working for the Caliguris as a technician is Ramonan Jake Zoria, who has been with We Care for approximately 10 years. The company also cleans area rugs, carpets

inside recreational vehicles and other vehicles, and offer carpet and fabric protectants and carpet deodorizing. The Caliguris said they are thankful for their cus[VTLYZ JVUĂ„KLUJL PU them and their loyalty, and wish all a New Year Ă„SSLK ^P[O WLHJL HUK happiness."

Passion for Ramona’s past preserved in hometown museum By JESSICA KING Those interested in learning more about Ramona’s past and the people who shaped it into what it is today need look no further than Main Street and the Guy B. Woodward Museum. Ramona Pioneer Historical Society established the museum in the 1960s as a tribute to early western culture. It was moved to 645 Main St. in the mid-1980s when Leona Ransom's heirs donated the grounds to the historical society. It is named

for its biggest champion, Guy Burton Woodward. Woodward was born and raised in Ramona, living from 1909 to 1997. The former police chief devoted his retirement years to building the museum. Today, his son Kenneth Woodward serves as the museum’s director. “When dad retired in the latter part of the '60s, he was bound and determined to have some kind of museum to commemorate the old-timers he knew because, of course, he grew up with them, said the younger Woodward.

The most interesting piece of history at the museum may just be the structure that houses it. The museum's centerpiece is the Verlaque House, a French provincial-style home built in 1886 by immigrant and prominent San Diego businessman Theophile Verlaque. The home features adobe walls 18 inches thick, ceilings 12 feet high, and a basement wine cellar. “Everything you see (in the museum) has been donated, said Woodward. “Nothing was ever

Father's legacy

“When I was a little kid growing up, Dad would say, ‘Get in the car, Ken, we’re going to go up and see the Warnock brothers' and other old-timers like them and you know, things like that, so I would just sit as a kid and listen to them talk and take it all in, he said. Many of those stories can still be heard today through the younger Woodward as he gives tours of the museum to the general public and special groups, including local schoolchildren. The former schoolteacher, who taught history and government at Oceanside High School, particularly enjoys giving school tours. “I love them, he said. “They’re fun. Sounds of freedom in our republic By JOHN RAJCIC

T

he public school has been under attack since its inception. Voices of discontent invariably surface loudly when change threatens the status

quo. What should be taught in school and how should it be taught? What books should be read and what books should not be on the library shelf? Just as an aside, when I was a teacher in the '50s, J.D Salinger's “Catcher in the Ryeâ€? was banned and today it is a staple in many high school literature classes. As a high school student in the '40s, Winsor's “Forever Amber“ was banned. A classmate, soon to be an accomplished movie star, and other girls put a line under the “good partsâ€? and the book was circulated, unknown to the teacher, in our English class. Henry Miller's “Tropic of Cancerâ€? was banned. In 1964 the Supreme Court declared the book non-obscene. During the recent school board election-debate, the candidates were asked, “What is the purpose of education?â€? The candidates' responses tended to coincide with some of the responses to the same question asked by a blogger in 2010: Prepare students to participate in our democracy, to function in society and careers, to think critically and to be lifelong learners. Only one person said teaching the three R's. In a brief survey, I asked, "What is the purpose of education?" Teaching the three R's was the number 1 response to the question. Concerns about teaching values were mentioned. I was taught and believe that the primary purpose of education is to transmit our culture through a common language. This was not mentioned in the online or in my brief survey. One of the many strengths of our nation is the ability, like no other nation, to assimilate people from THU` SHUKZ /PZ[VYPJHSS` [OL W\ISPJ ZJOVVS Ă„ SSLK [OPZ mission admirably. We are a pluralistic society, but our never-ending extreme emphasis on diversity and multiculturalism does harm to the notion that our nation is the “great melting pot.â€? E pluribus unum — that out of many we made one nation. Education is a prerequisite for an individual's wellbeing and the harmonious functioning of society. What you know better you will do better. Education is essential to the preservation of the rights and liberties of the people. I believe education should be an empowering process that allows children to develop their passions, See COMMENTARY, page B6

Letters San Vicente Road work misses main problem I am writing to address the current road work being done on San Vicente Road. For a long time the San Diego Country Estates community has been asking for the renovation of San Vicente because of the many lives that have been lost there. Now that the construction has begun, I fear that the changes being made will not be enough nor curb the growing number of accidents there. While these changes are being made with all of the best intentions, it appears that the plan for the renovations missed a vitally necessary component. While Z[YHPNO[LUPUN [OL YVHK ^V\SK IL H KLĂ„ nite improvement, the winding nature of the road was not the main problem. The greatest danger of the road came from being a narrow two-lane road that serves as one of two routes into and out of the SDCE, which has a population of over 10,000 people. A straighter road by itself may even encourage drivers to drive faster because there is less perceived danger and would lead to more loss of life. The $22 million spent on this proj-

ect may not save nearly as many lives as was hoped because straightening the road took precedence over widening the road. Jacob Younessian Student Ramona High School 'In lieu of Q' suggestions Re: "Great concept, but don't think it will work" letter in last week's Sentinel. From page B8 a campaign poster for a Ramona schoolteacher who ran for Congress in 1912. What’s unusual about that item is that the schoolteacher was Helen Stoddard. At the time women had no voting rights. “She didn’t make it, but it was just the fact that she did it which was so great,â€? said Woodward. Beyond the library sits a bedroom with a handcarved wooden French provincial bed and dresser that were made for the founder of Yale Law Co. and his wife. Through the years, several collectors have approached Woodward, but his memories of his father

have stopped him from selling anything. “I watched people give dad stuff, the only way I can characterize it is it was like, ‘Guy, I’m going to give you this and I know you’re going to take care of it’ and that was his promise, ‘I’m going to take care of it,’ and so that’s the way it happened,

OBITUARIES

Wanda Wirtz

amona Sentinel

1931– 2014 Surrounded by her loving family, Wanda Adele (Bright) Wirtz passed on Tuesday, December 9, 2014. She was 83 years young. Born in Long Beach, CA, in 1931, Wanda was a unique soul and a matriarch of strength. With her bright red hair and piercing blue/green eyes, Wanda was both an oak tree of support for her family as well as a gentle soul to those who knew her personally. Wanda was a homemaker back when it was a true occupation. She also worked as a secretary

before starting the San Diego family-owned and operated tile and stone company, Wirtz Tile, with her husband and son. She left the company in 2001 to pursue retirement. San Diego County was her home. She lived in National City, graduating from Sweetwater High School in 1949. She and her husband, John, and three children made National City home for many years. After her children were raised, Wanda and John moved to Spring Valley. Her ďŹ nal move brought her to the quaint, quiet town of Ramona, the place she felt most at peace. Wanda’s passions were a dichotomy of interests. From competitive ballroom dancing and traveling, to long lazy afternoons of gardening (she loved her roses and owers) and reading. She traveled abroad and stateside, loving all aspects of exploring the world. In addition to personal endeavors, Wanda’s compassion for animals was no-more apparent than seeing her interaction with her late dog Bogie,

the dove that visited her front porch in Spring Valley every year to lay and raise its young, the hundreds of hummingbirds that occupied her backyard in Ramona, and her verymuch alive and ornery ragdoll cat, Poppy. She was a charitable donor to both the ASPCA and Humane Society. Affectionately known as Grandma “Redâ€? to her grandchildren, she drove with the license plate frame “Hot Rod Grannyâ€? on her cars for years. Her red hair and matching red cars truly deďŹ ned her character – strong and ďŹ ercely independent, yet loving and compassionate. To say she will be missed by all who knew her is an understatement. However, our lives have been made richer by her presence. Survivors include daughters, Elaine Williams of Ramona, CA, and Diana Barnicle of Yuma AZ; son, John D. Wirtz of Escondido, CA; eight grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren. Wanda was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Q. Wirtz, and her beloved

sister, Evelyn Pursley. A viewing and memorial will be held in the Little Chapel of the Roses at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, CA, on Tuesday, December 16, 2014,with viewing at 10 am followed by the service at 11 am. In lieu of owers, the family suggests donations to The Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Please sign the guest book online at www. legacy.com/obituaries/ ramonasentinel.

Anna Maria Steiner 1931 - 2014 Mrs. Steiner, 83, of Ramona, passed away December 13, 2014. Visitation will be held on December 22, 2014, from 5-8pm at Bonham Bros & Stewart Mortuary Chapel; Mass on December 23, 2014, at 10 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Ramona; burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, San Diego, following the Mass.

real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-2802832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.auction. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000004737540. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
