It was with a mixture of concern, discouragement and even compassion that prompted more than a dozen Ramona residents to attend a recent meeting on church crime. San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Specialist Barbara Wallace and Detective Mike McNeill led the meeting, held Feb. 7 in the sheriff’s substation in town. Sheriff’s officials had requested that each church in Ramona send a representative to the meeting, which focused on recent crimes against local churches. Along with the clergy were Sheriff’s Department volunteers and concerned citizens. “The biggest criminal problem with the churches in town right now is theft of copper and other metals from heating and air conditioning units,” said McNeill. “More than a half dozen incidents have occurred since late November 2011.” He added what nearly everyone in the room suspected: “The thieves are usually selling the material to recycling centers, and using the money to buy drugs.”

MURAL PREP—Painting contractor Guillermo Navarro and his crew put primer on the Town & Country Real Estate & Home Loans tower at Main and 10th streets on Friday, Feb. 10, in preparation for the first mural of the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Project. Artists John and Jeanne Whalen are painting a mural of American cowboy, rodeo performer and actor Casey Tibbs, who lived in Ramona until his death. The mural will be installed on the tower beginning Feb. 16 and is scheduled to be completed by Saturday, when a town celebration is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Town & Country building.

Although county counsel believes county supervisors did not violate the state’s open meeting law in December, the supervisors on Feb. 7 vacated their Dec. 7 action and scheduled a Feb. 29 meeting to address their actions on the Red Tape Reduction Task Force and other task force recommendations. The vote came after Californians Aware filed suit against the San Diego County Board of Supervisors challenging the Dec. 7 vote. Californians Aware argued that the posted agenda recommended only accepting the task force’s report, but the supervisors voted to implement some of its recomSee COUNTY on page 6

PPH plans to break ground on clinic in May or June By KAREN BRAINARD Palomar Pomerado Health hopes to break ground on its Ramona satellite clinic in May or June, according to officials in the public health district. If that happens, the target completion date is April 2013, said Michael Shanahan, director of PPH facilities planning. The project has received approvals from the Ramona Municipal Water District and the San Diego County Planning Department, said Shanahan. To be built on an acre of PPH-owned property north of Main Street between 13th and 14th streets, the clinic has been downsized from the original plans of 36,650 square feet to 7,600 square feet. The economy and less tenant commitments contributed to the downsizing, said PPH officials. Palomar Pomerado

Health and its affiliated physician organization, Arch Health Partners, will occupy the building, providing primary care, urgent care and some specialty services. Due to the changes, an addendum was added to the project’s California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) final mitigated negative declaration, which was to be addressed by PPH directors this week. Upon board approval of the final project and addendum, Shanahan said the next steps would be seeking grading and building permits from the county. Total cost of the project is estimated at $6 million, said Shanahan, with the county’s Transportation Impact Fee (TIF) costing about $75,000. Money for the project comes from a $496 million bond that voters approved in November 2004.

Ping-Pong politics, ‘R Town’ parade “R TOWN”—That’s the theme of Ramona’s 2012 Main Street Parade scheduled for Saturday, May 19, reports Parade Committee Secretary Bonnie Kirkland, Ramona High Class of 2000 graduate. Now married, Kirkland’s classmates at RHS remember her as Bonnie Donovan. “R Town,” a nice play on the title of the Thornton Wilder play “Our Town,” means parade entrants can choose anything related to Ramona for their entry. The committee will start accepting parade applications toward the end of March, giving clubs, organizations, groups, agencies, families, individuals and politicians plenty of time to think of how they will represent Ramona in the “R Town” parade. Check ramonarodeo.org for details once the committee announces it’s accepting applications. PING PONG POLITICS—Ramona Unified School District and other agencies under the thumb of the state continue to be victims of the whims of

our state “leaders.” Retired Supt. Pete Schiff would refer to it as “trying to hit a moving target.” One recent example is school transportation. Two months ago, Assistant Superintendent David Ostermann reported that, due to what Gov. Brown calls “triggers”—cuts as a result of the state not meeting mid-year budget projections—Ramona would lose half its transportation money from the state for the 2011-12 year. That’s about $311,000. So, after passing a budget in June based on state projections, Ostermann was back at the drawing board trying to determine the best way to either shave $311,000 from the school budget or make up the difference. Another mid-year cut was $13 per student, or a loss of $78,000 for the rest of the school year.

At the next school board meeting, Ostermann reported that the state planned to cut all money for transportation, prompting another trip to the budget drawing board. But not to worry. On Friday on his way home, Ostermann heard the report that the governor had signed a bill that restores all state money for school transportation. Another “but:” Nothing’s changed for next year, “100 percent of transportation money will be cut— about $623,000,” Ostermann said on Monday. About 1,274 of the district’s estimated 6,100 students ride school buses. Of those, 127 are special needs students, who are not charged, and 1,147 other students. Of the 1,147, a total of 493 pay for bus passes and 654 get free rides because they

qualify for the free lunch program. It costs the district $2.1 million to operate its transportation department, said Ostermann. That includes everything— gas, maintenance, supplies, and employee salaries and benefits, he said. If the state is correct this time and the district loses its state transportation money next school year, changes have to be made. But, when it comes to the state, “you never know,” commented Ostermann. “It’s a lot of ‘what ifs.’... It makes it difficult to plan.” CALICO GHOST TOWN—If you’re in the Barstow area Presidents’ Weekend, look for the Ramona Community Brass Band in Ghost Town Park. The musicians/historic re-enactors will be participating in Calico Ghost Town Civil War Weekend. They’ll play in the parade, serenade “President Lincoln” with a concert each day and go into battle as a Marine Detachment from the USS Wabash, said Ken Serfass, band director. The public’s welcome.

Conklin continues push for local hearing on SDGE plan By KAREN BRAINARD Proponents for a public hearing on San Diego Gas and Electric’s wildfire recovery cost plan are pushing for a hearing before a Feb. 17 deadline but have not received a response from the state public utility commission, despite growing support from ratepayers, organizations and lawmakers. California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Administrative Law Judge Maribeth Bushey has set Feb. 17 as the deadline for parties to file briefs

on SDG&E’s application to establish a Wildfire Expense Balancing Account (WEBA). The account would be a mechanism for SDG&E to record and recover costs from the 2007 wildfires, along with future wildfires. Mussey Grade Road Alliance Spokesperson Diane Conklin said the account will lead to SDG&E increasing rates to recoup $463.9 million for the utility’s uninsured costs related to the 2007 wildfires. Conklin wants the public participation hearing to be held in San Diego

On the Agenda Thursday, Feb. 16 Ramona Unified School District Board, 6 p.m. closed session, 7 p.m. open session, Wilson Administrative Center, 729 Ninth St. Among agenda items are: Report on 2012-13 budget, enrollment projections for 2012-13, report on the performance of the district’s irrigation wells, reports from employee unions, report on 21st century learning at Ramona High School. Wednesday, Feb. 22 Committee for A Better Ramona, 6 p.m., Ramona Town Hall, 729 Main St. Thursday, Feb. 23 County Supervisor Dianne Jacob’s Coffee with the Constituents, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Guy B. Woodward Museum, 645 Main St. Open to the public.

before the briefs are due so the transcripts can be included in the briefs. A public hearing held after the briefs are filed would be less important in terms of the commission’s decision on the WEBA, said Conklin. CPUC has held public hearings recently in the San Diego area on other issues, including an SDG&E substation proposal in Jacumba, noted Conklin. “What’s different about this?” she asked. Conklin said she first requested a public hearing about 18 months ago at a pre-hearing conference in September 2010 on SDG&E’s application. At the January evidentiary hearings in San Francisco, she filed a motion for a hearing and requested a ruling by Feb. 1. Since that motion, letters in support of a hearing in San Diego have been written by County Supervisor Dianne Jacob to CPUC Commissioner Timothy Simon and by District 39 State Senator Christine

Kehoe to CPUC President Michael Peevey. Several utility advocacy organizations, a group of lawyers representing wildfire victims, and SDG&E customers have requested a public hearing. “They’re not representing the people, they’re just representing the utility,” Conklin said of the commission. SDG&E says a public hearing is not necessary at this time because the utility is only seeking approval for a balancing account and would have to go back to the commission before recovering expenses from

ratepayers, said the utility’s spokesperson, Stephanie Donovan. SDG&E is not opposed to a public hearing when or if it files for cost-recovery of litigationrelated expenses beyond what was covered by insurance and third-party settlements, she said. Others say the public needs to have their say now. Kehoe said in her letter to the CPUC: “It is only appropriate that as the CPUC decides whether local ratepayers should pay the costs of decisions made by SDG&E that led to settlement agreements for losses

and damage during the three 2007 wildfires, that the public’s voice be heard on this matter through a local public hearing.” Conklin said SDG&E customers have to realize they will not be paying for the wildfire expenses as a one-time deal. “We’ll be paying over and over,” she said, noting everyone uses electricity. “Every business will pass on the costs to the consumer.” Conklin encourages SDG&E customers to call Commissioner Simon’s office at 415-703-1407 to request a public hearing.

I see my biggest accomplishment as being a parent of two children that turned out to be hardworking and successful and haven’t caused any substantial problems in the world. Some of my most enjoyable moments come from my grandchildren. One of my granddaughters was visiting and wanted to try her hand at being a comedienne. She was about three years old. The exchange went something like this...“Grandpa, Knock Knock?” she asked. “Who’s there?” I replied. “Orange you glad I didn’t say banana?” Trying to figure out if she short circuited an old joke or if perhaps there was a new twist on it, I stood and waited. She put her hands on her hips, tilted her head slightly forward and looked at me (like a school teacher would look over her glasses) and said “It’s kinda funny!” At this point I knew I had to respond, so I gave a forced chuckle “ha ha ha ha.” With that her response was showing her bottom teeth protruding forward and she began to slug me repeatedly, raising her voice and saying “you’re not laughing right!” To which I truly started laughing out loud. She stopped the slug attack and said “that’s better,” then turned around held her chin high and walked away. Persistence and tenacity are values that we admire in our family and in the people we have that work for us. Call Sludgbusters if you need a septic system task performed. Fusion students strive to ‘connect with the community’ By PIXIE SULSER Ramona High School could be called a campus that rarely sleeps. As the town’s primary secondary school, there never seems to be a lack of activity. That is especially true for the Fusion Club of RHS. Fusion is a community service oriented group of students and staff whose motto is to love, serve and empower. “Our real theme,” shared Fusion President Ellen Douglass, “is ‘Students helping students connect

with the community.’” There are approximately 80 club members, making it the largest organization on campus, according to adviser Jim Plum. Membership comes through teacher recommendation so, “most of our members are sophomores through seniors, however a few freshmen have been recommended for membership,” said Douglass. The group is led by a Fusion Council of student leaders. Joining Douglass on this year’s council are Ava Anderson, Bryan KelPhotos/Brian Douglass

ly, Kristy Keyes, Kimberly Meader and Tyler WeaverVilla. The group organizes a variety of service projects on and off campus. They host monthly Campus Beautification Days resulting in planting 16 palm trees, removing eight dead tree stumps, repairing bathroom latches, renovating the campus bike rack area, painting the bathrooms and cleaning bleachers. Fusion also provides tutoring services for students

on campus. Students or teachers on behalf of a student may request tutoring by completing a Tutor Request and dropping it in a Fusion Tutor Box. At weekly meetings, council members ask for volunteers from the membership to fulfill the tutoring requests. Off campus projects include a variety of activities. In November Fusion partnered with the boys basketball team to host a Trash-a-Thon. “We literally cleaned up

the whole town of Ramona!” said Douglass. “Local businesses sponsored members for bags of trash collected or they could make a flat donation. The project was very successful.” The group loaded 334 bags of trash into dumpsters that Ramona Disposal Service donated. Funds raised from projects such as the Trash-a-Thon are being saved toward the purchase of a RHS campus directory for the entrance to the school.

Three times a year Fusion members participate in the Feed the Hungry program, assisting local churches with the serving of food to community members in need. Fusion was one of the many Ramona school district groups that collected canned goods and toys for the annual Share Your Holidays event hosted by the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet. “Twelve Fusion leaders even assisted in the passing out of presents to young children and bags of food to families in need,” said Plum. Currently, the Fusion Club is gearing up for their first involvement in “My Girlfriend’s Closet Clothes Drive.” From Feb. 20 to 24, the group is collecting gently used clothing for high school age girls. On Feb 25, the collection will be taken to the My Girlfriend’s Closet organization in San Diego for distribution to disadvantaged and foster teens. “The word fusion means uniting diverse elements into a unified whole,” said Plum. “We desire to match strengths with areas of need. The bottom line is Fusion leaders have a passion for making a positive impact on their campus and community.”

mendations County Counsel Tom Montgomery told the board it has the right to amend motions if an item is placed on the agenda and county staff does not believe that the open meeting law, the Ralph M. Brown Act, was violated. After Californians Aware filed suit, the county supervisors said that vacating the Dec. 7 decision and rescheduling the matter would be preferable to spending time and money on litigations. Under the Brown Act, no action can be taken on an item unless it has been placed on a publicly-noticed agenda. The law does not require the public board to adopt the staff recommendation, said Montgomery. “The public should not be relying on the action the chief administrative officer is recommending,” said Montgomery. “Your board may take any type of action.” The item noticed for the Dec. 7 meeting had two recommendations form the chief administrative officer: to receive the task force’s report and to direct staff to evaluate the recommendation the board selected and report back within 60 days. The county supervisors directed county staff to implement some of the 35 recommendations while directing staff to evaluate the rest of the recommendations and return within 60 days. The task force was created in April 2011 to examine and streamline the land development permitting process to improve efficiency. The most controversial of the 35 recommendations was to eliminate or significantly restrict community planning and sponsor groups. Proposed changes if planning and sponsor groups are not eliminated include limiting their scope of review to the prepa-

ration and amendments of the general and community plans, providing a senior level planner and county counsel at each planning or sponsor group meeting, eliminating free appeals if a planning or sponsor group appeals a county planning commission decision to the supervisors, and setting term limits to reduce terms from four to two years and limiting planning group members to two terms in a 10-year period and reducing to seven the number of planning or sponsor group members. In both the elimination and restriction proposal, applicants for discretionary projects would still need to prepare a Public Participation Plan to inform community residents, and at least one publicly-noticed meeting in the community would be required. The county has 26 planning and sponsor groups. Among them is the 15-member Ramona Community Planning Group. Members of a planning group are elected by voters within the community planning area and must be residents of that planning area. Sponsor group members are appointed by the county supervisors after being recommended by the sponsor group and are not required to live in the planning area. The county established planning and sponsor groups to encourage a level of citizen participation in the community planning process. The county hosted a Feb. 2 meeting with representatives from the planning advisory groups. The next day planning group chairs in District 2 met with County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. The representatives agreed to alternatives to present to the supervisors, if need be, to persuade them to retain community planning groups.

McNeill and Wallace pointed out that churches often become crime victims because they are “easy targets.” McNeill said each of the recent thefts has taken place “in the middle of the night and out of view.” The theft of the wiring used in the heating and air conditioning units at the churches follows previous crimes, which have included the stealing of religious statuary and breaking into cars. The session included not only tips on preventing crime at churches, but Wallace gave advice on business and personal protection strategies. Her tips included reminders to repair hinges, locks and door frames on all doors; use either locks, dowels or antilift devices on window frames; make sure all lights work and install brighter bulbs where needed; and be especially careful with landscaping. “All bushes should be trimmed up, so that someone’s feet would be visible from the bottom against the ground, and they should also be trimmed down, so that no one is able to hide behind them,”

Detective Mike McNeill with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, and Crime Prevention Specialist Barbara Wallace give updates, tips and other information regarding the recent increase in crimes against Ramona churches at a meeting last Tuesday.

she said. Throughout the meeting, attendees asked numerous questions regarding the safety of their buildings and equipment. In response to one query, McNeill said that he did not believe that recent incidents of tagging, or graffiti, were being done by the same individuals taking the metal wiring. But he said that, in addition to criminal charges, crimes against churches could be prosecuted as hate crimes. Wallace encouraged

those present to report any suspicious activity or crime to the Sheriff’s Department as soon as possible, and not wait on or hope for someone else to do the reporting. “We want to make our churches as safe as we can,” she says. “We know you would rather use your money to help people.” Anyone interested in learning more about crime prevention or reporting criminal activity at local churches may call Wallace at 760-738-2425.

Man gets probation, 12 days in jail for disturbance at fair A Ramona man arrested at the Ramona Country Fair in July for a drunken disturbance has been sentenced to 12 days he has already served in jail and was placed on three years probation. Brandon Lee Mayors, 22, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of “maliciously and willfully disturbing another person by loud or unreasonable noise,” according to court records. El Cajon Superior Court Judge Patricia Cookson dismissed charges of misdemeanor battery on a security guard and being drunk in public after he admitted to the other charge. She fined him $504. Changing jobs or retiring? Consider IRA rollover

I

n the near future, are you going to change jobs or retire? If so, then you’ll have a lot of things to think about. And one of the most important considerations is what to do with the money you’ve accumulated in your employer’s 401(k) plan. While you have a few options, your best choice may be to roll over your 401(k) money into an IRA — so you’ll want to know, in advance, what’s involved in this move. By rolling over the taxable portion of your 401(k) — your pre-tax contributions, employer contributions and all earnings — into a new or existing IRA, you’ll gain some key advantages. First, you’ll avoid all immediate taxes and penalties. Second, you’ll continue to benefit from tax deferral. And third, IRAs offer you a wide variety of investment options. Eventually, though, you’ll have to decide what to do with your IRA. You can start taking withdrawals at age 59-1/2 without having to pay a 10 percent penalty tax. But suppose you’ve built up a considerable balance in your traditional IRA, and you don’t think you’ll need to use it all to help pay for your retirement. Can you pass on your IRA’s tax deferral to your children? Yes, you can — through the concept of the “stretch’’ or “multi-generational’’ IRA. To understand how the stretch IRA works, you need to know one of the rules governing traditional IRAs. Specifically, you have to start taking “required minimum distributions’’ at age 70-1/2. In recent years, the IRS changed the life expectancy factors used to determine your required minimum distribution calculations. Consequently, you can now take out smaller amounts of money from your IRA, which allows you to extend the number of years your IRA money has the potential to grow

tax-deferred. Obviously, the revised life expectancy rules will positively affect how much of your IRA money you can leave to your children. But the rule changes also permit your children, once they inherit your IRA, to base their minimum required distributions on their life expectancies. So, if they are in their early middle-aged years when they receive your IRA, they can take out relatively small amounts, thereby avoiding big tax hits. And, if their situation allows, they can then leave the IRA to their children, who can continue to enjoy the benefits of tax deferral. Rollover to Roth IRA Until recently, you couldn’t roll over a 401(k) directly to a Roth IRA — first, you had to roll over the 401(k) to a traditional IRA and then convert the traditional IRA to a Roth and pay tax on the conversion. But new tax laws allow you to make direct rollovers to a Roth IRA, starting in 2008. You’ll still have to pay taxes on the converted amount, but you — and your children or grandchildren — might come out ahead in the long run, because Roth IRA earnings have the potential to grow tax-free, provided certain requirements are met. You’ll need to consult with your tax advisor to make sure you are eligible to open a Roth IRA. Keep Your 401(k) Working for You Before you change jobs or retire, consult with your financial adviser and tax professional on whether an IRA rollover makes sense for you. You worked hard for your 401(k) funds, so keep them working for you. Financial adviser Yvonne Catton’s Edward Jones office is at 850 Main St., Suite 104, in Ramona. She may be contacted at 760-7892804.

Bank reports 2011 earnings of $1.1 million Bank of Southern California, with offices in Ramona, announces a net income of $1.1 million in 2011, compared to a net loss of $0.7 million in 2010. “We are extremely pleased by the bank’s earnings performance last year,” said Nathan Rogge, president and chief executive officer. “Careful management of the bank’s operations and continued progress on our strategic plan combined to produce strong momentum that we expect to continue in 2012.” Rogge noted that the bank has consistently grown each year. The bank’s loan portfolio has grown

Cancer is not a death sentence

M

y name is Diane Fieger and I am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in January of 2011. However, before I tell you my journey, my course of action on how I sailed this horrific ship, I must give you a little background about myself. My highest accomplishments, through the grace of God, are choosing the most wonderful man to marry, Marcus Fieger and having two terrific boys, Dylan and Daniel. I have been a radiologic technologist for the past 23 years. My specialty and focus is in mammography. Isn’t that ironic? All these years I have been educating my patients on good

Guest Commentary breast health care. Get a yearly m a m mogram, a yearly clinical breast e x a m , and perDIANE FIEGER form a self breast exam monthly. Because I followed my own advice, I was able to find my cancer at an early stage. Being a mammographer made it easier for me to make the tough decisions. I always knew what I would do if “it” happened

to me. In October of 2010 I had my yearly mammogram. In January of 2011 (three months later) I found three breast lumps and saw some dimpling of the skin. All three of these lumps felt different, which is uncharacteristic for breast cancer. One was hard as a pea, one squishy like an eyeball, one somewhere between the two. I was convinced that one of those was cancer, but not all three. I took action and received extra mammogram imaging, ultrasound and biopsies. The lumps did

not present themselves on the mammogram but they did on ultrasound. I now know that the type of breast cancer I had does not usually show up on a mammogram. This is why it is so important for women to examine their own breasts. I was my own selfdefense. All three lumps were cancer and the same type of cancer. At that point hard decisions had to be made. Due to having family history of breast cancer, my cancers not being able to be found by mammography, and that the masses were quick growing, I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy. There is no way I wanted to relive this nightmare again down the road. Lymph nodes were clear (thank God), but due to my young age (ha!) and all that I’ve stated earlier, it was recommended that I have chemotherapy, six treatments of that horrible “cocktail” (wish it was wine). Sentinel Reader Opinion Enthusiastic support for mural project benefit

The Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project held its first major fundraiser on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Milagro Farm Vineyard & Winery. The Board wants to thank everyone involved for their astounding efforts to make this event a huge and happy success. This community appears to have been thirsting for a wine and food event like this one, since we blew by our attendance goal by more than 30 percent. Many comments were made about holding an event like this twice a year to benefit the mural project. Stay tuned on that. Additional generous donations to the silent auction prizes were made by local and North County businesses, proceeds from the sale of wine bar tables by a local artisan were received when two tables were sold, winery owners Kit and Karen Sickels threw in additional perks to please the crowd. Food and its beautiful presentation was provided by John Little Catering, and Seidl’s Party Rentals provided touches to make an elegant set for the food displays. Local violinist Andrew Stubbs strolled through the crowd providg

ing soothing and lovely background music. The first mural is being installed on the tower of the Town & Country Real Estate and Home Loans building at the corner of 10th and Main on Feb. 16, 17, and 18, with the community invited to meet the artists, John and Jeanne Whalen, and see the final art piece on Saturday Feb. 18, from 3 to 5 p.m. Funds raised from the Milagro event will start the process for the next mural in the aggressive program to install five murals a year over the next five years in the town. Thank you, Ramona, for your enthusiastic support! S. Elaine Lyttleton, president of the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Project Board, on behalf of the board

Questions group’s intersection concern

Re: Article Feb 9, 2012, “Busy intersection remains priority for planners.” (Highway 67 and Highland Valley/Dye Road) In the above referenced article, our Ramona Community Planning Group was portrayed as being very concerned with the traffic jams during peak hour traffic at the intersection of 67 and Highland Valley/Dye Road.

Commentary Continued from page 8

I know most of you are familiar with chemo and its effects, so I won’t go into that. Just know that it is “liquid devil in a bag.” Awful! Once that fun was over, phew, I received 33 radiation treatments to my chest wall. No picnic there either. Many other tests are performed along the way, PET Scan, MRI, lots of blood work, etc. One year later, I’m here to tell my story. I made it through this tough time because of the Lord and everyone who loves me. People are good. Everyone from my oldest dearest friends, to pals around town, to complete strangers, showed me love. My message is this: Cancer is not a death sentence. This ugly can be fought. I implore everyone to be proactive with your health care. Don’t live in denial. Cancer can happen to anyone. Cancer is sneaky. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. Take care of yourself because you matter and are worthy of a healthy, happy life. God bless you. Editor’s Note: Diane Fieger, a Ramona resident, shares her story as part of the Ramona Relay for Life fundraising effort for cancer research and education. The 24-hour relay will be at the Wilson Stadium, 720 Ninth St., from 8 a.m. May 12 to 8 a.m. May 13. Teams are forming for the annual event. For details, contact Lyn Hardy at 760-7895170, 760-315-3053 or lynhar50@hotmail.com.

I believe this is not the case. If they were concerned, why don’t they have the problem intersection on their “top ten road projects priority list ?” For a number of years, I have asked our planning group to put the problem intersection on their “priority list” and they would not listen. I would go to the Trails and Transportation Committee and they would not listen. Instead of asking the county and the state to improve intersection of 67 and Dye Road so that thousands of Ramona commuters would not have to suffer, the planning group asked for other road improvements such as 1) the “Dye Road Extension” which will cost approximately $7 million, 2) the Ramona Street Extension which will cost approximately $4 million, and other road projects which are not as critical as the intersection of 67 and Highland Valley. With the $12 million, our planning group could have fixed the biggest traffic problem in Ramona. I am very amazed that Ramona voters continue to vote for these people that don’t really represent their interests. Our planning group should get their heads out of the sand and ask SANDAG (the county agency that funds many of the road projects in San Diego County) to separate the widening of Highway 67 from Mapleview through Dye Road into 2 separate Phases: Phase One, from Archie Moore to 1/2 mile east of Dye Road. and Phase 2, from Mapleview to Archie Moore. Had the current planning group and past planning groups not been so unresponsive, they could have listed the problem intersection on their priority lists and there would have been a good chance the intersection would have been fixed years ago. I think it’s time we got some new faces on our Ramona planning group. Keep that in mind, Ramona, this November. Joe Minervini Ramona

Roberts reflects on past, looks to future in State of County San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Roberts reflected on past accomplishments and spoke of future prospects, both fiscal and social, in his State of the County Address Wednesday night. Roberts said the county has completed more than 70 capital projects in the past decade, including 10 libraries, an animal shelter and two sheriff’s stations.

“This is the time to create jobs. It’s a great time to build because construction is a part of the community.” The county has used cash to fund 70 percent of the costs, saving taxpayers $1.46 billion, he said. The new buildings will continue to serve the public well into the future, he

said. Thousands of jobs were also created in the construction industry, Roberts said in his Feb. 8 speech in the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.

“This is the time to create jobs,’’ Roberts said. “It’s a great time to build because construction is a part of the community.” Roberts said future jobs could also come from international trade. “San Diego has the brain power and the people power to not just be a global player, but to be a star,” Roberts said. San Diego County is

striving to improve the health of its residents, Roberts said, adding it plans to begin a program aimed at children, dubbed 5-2-1-0, that stresses exercise and healthy eating. Childhood obesity rates in San Diego County are below state average, but at 34.5 that number is still shocking, Roberts said. “A healthy community starts with healthy chil-

dren,” he said, adding that a program for adults is also in the works. In addition, the county has plans for a state-ofthe-art system that could be used during fires to provide real-time information during emergencies, he said. Roberts also touched on technology, reducing air pollution and homelessness.

School fundraising money goes to Warrior Foundation By MAUREEN ROBERTSON When two Mountain Valley Academy students from Ramona Community School held up an oversized check for $2,450 at a recent school board meeting, the audience responded with “Wow,” “Nice,” whistles and applause. The money, raised by the school’s Associated Student Body, goes to the Warrior Foundation for servicemen and women injured physically and-or emotionally in Iraq or Afghanistan. Ramona resident Evelyn McCormick, Warrior Foundation Freedom Station Board member, was at the Ramona Unified School District Board meeting to accept the check from the school’s ASB president, Emily Rajcic, and ASB members Alex La Rosa and Dylan Loftis. With the students was teacher and ASB adviser Larry Hofer. “We have 21 students, and they have made a very valiant effort to honor and support our military heroes,” said Hofer. For the past five years, the students have held fundraisers, but they had a dilemma, Hofer said: To what worthy cause would they give the money? “Then we read a mission statement,” he said, and “when we heard this mission statement, our focus became the Warrior

Foundation.” The mission “is to assist, honor and support the military men and women/service members/personnel who have so bravely served and sacrificed for their country. We further vow to help the seriously injured who are assigned to Naval Regional Medical Center, Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, 29 Palms and Fort Irwin as well as those who are going through rehabilitation in the San Diego area.” The $2,450 is half of the money ASB had raised in the past five years along with money from selling 175 holiday trees in late 2011 and donations they received from the Ramona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Ramona Rotary Club and RUSD Superintendent Robert Graeff. “Along with our fundraising, we sent students down to the Naval Regional Medical Center and we helped to decorate the barracks there for Christmas,” Hofer said. “I just want you to know how much this is appreciated,” said McCormick. Her voice cracking with emotion, McCormick explained that “from Warrior Foundation, we developed Freedom Station. It’s transitional housing for our warriors that will be medically discharged. If you could just see how they care for each other.”

Planning Commission approves tentative map for Keyes Road five-lot subdivision By JOE NAIMAN County planning commissioners have approved a tentative parcel map to subdivide a 10.38-acre site in the 1500 block of Keyes Road into five lots. The 6-0 vote on Feb. 10 also adopts the environmental Mitigated Negative Declaration for the project. The off-site mitigation will include acquisition and conservation of 3.75 acres of non-native grassland or other suitable habitat, and a hydromodification management plan will be required to address drainage issues. Ramona Community Planning Group voted 11-0 in July 2010 to recommend approval of the project. The property is owned by Gregory and Gloria McCandless. An existing single-family residence will be maintained, and four new homes will be built. The property’s A70 limited agricultural zoning allows for a minimum lot size of two acres, and the lots will range from 2 to

2.03 acres. An additional 0.35 acres will be used for a private road off Keyes Road to provide access for the four new homes. The private road will be 24 feet wide with a 36foot cul-de-sac, and a fire hydrant will be installed in the cul-de-sac. The project will install a 9 1/2-foot decomposed granite pathway along the project frontage. Keyes Road will be widened along the project frontage to 35 feet, including 25 feet of asphalt concrete pavement, from the road’s centerline. The 25 feet of paving will cover a 12-foot travel lane, a 5-foot bicycle lane, and an 8-foot shoulder. If the county’s Traffic Advisory Committee recommends a

parking prohibition along the frontage area, the graded width may be reduced to 30 feet with 20 feet of paving. The private road will have a maintenance agreement, and its cul-de-sac will be a designated fire lane with no non-emergency parking allowed. An existing well on the property will be retained, although it will be used for irrigation only. Ramona Municipal Water District will provide water service to the site, which will be served by on-site septic systems. A tentative map can be recorded as a final map when all conditions of the tentative map, other than those for which a final map is required, are fulfilled.

Public invited to Jacob’s coffee San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob will hold a “Coffee with the Constituents” for Ramona residents from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Feb. 23, at the Guy B. Woodward Museum, 645 Main St.. Twice a year, Jacob

holds the coffee in Ramona to update her constituents on what’s happening at the county level and to provide the opportunity for residents to ask questions and share their concerns. Jacob represents District 2, which includes Ramona

She encouraged everyone to “keep remembering them. They need us to always be their advocates. I really believe that they are going to be the century’s greatest generation.” “They humble me,” she said. “Every time I see them and work with them, I

think, I have no complaints in life...Thank you so much for thinking of them. They are really really wonderful people.” Information about upcoming fundraisers and events is on the web at warrior foundation.com and freedom station.org, McCormick said.

David Horowitz of Horowitz Freedom Center to speak in Ramona on Feb. 25 By DARRELL BECK David Horowitz was one of the founders of the radical New Left in the 1960s. Over the years, however, Horowitz has had second thoughts about his anger during those early days of protest. He has written many books including “Destructive Generation” (1989) and “Radical Son” (1996) in which he traces the odyssey that took him from “red-diaper baby” to a respected national figure and conservative activist. Among his other books are “The Politics of Bad Faith” (2000), “Hating Whitey” (2000), “Left Illusions” (2003) and “The Party of Defeat” (2008). His “Unholy Alliance” (2004) was a prophetic work pioneering the view that the Islamo-Fascists are working hand in glove with the secularist left. So who better than a hard-core leftist turned conservative to expose the left, some ask? Because of his life experiences, Horowitz created the Center for the Study of Popular Culture (CSPC) in 1988. It was renamed the David Horowitz Freedom Center (DHFC) in 2006. This organization’s mission is to defend the principles of individual freedom, the rule of law, private property and limited government.

Horowitz has devoted much of his attention over the past several years to the radicalization of the American university. He devised an Academic Bill of Rights to protect students from abusive indoctrination in the classroom. Asserting that, “you can’t get a good education if they’re only telling you half the story,” Horowitz founded Students for Academic Freedom (SAF), which has chapters on 200 college campuses. Horowitz has spoken at over 300 colleges and universities and continues to visit about 30 campuses a year. He has appeared on television’s Nightline, Crossfire, Today, Hannity and Colmes, the O’Reilly Factor, Good Morning America, C-SPAN, CNBC, Fox News and MSNBC. Horowitz will speak at the Ramona Tea’d monthly forum on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Ramona Mainstage, 626 Main St. His topic will be Stealth Jihad. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the program begins at noon. Food and drinks are available on site. Early arrival is recommended, because seating is limited. Also on the program will be other notable speakers including Michael Hayutin, Linda Sax and Jim Freedman. For more information see www.RamonaTead.com

Lincoln assassination is topic of museum potluck Feb. 21 Ramona resident Michael Harrison, a history buff, will lead a talk on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and recent research on the topic at the Feb. 21 meeting of the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society. The meeting will be in the Barnett Barn on the grounds of the Guy B. Woodward Museum, 645 Main St., at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited. Those attending are asked to bring a main dish, salad or dessert to serve about eight people. Harrison is deputy district chief of staff for Congressman Duncan D. Hunter. He also worked for Hunter’s father, former Congressman Duncan Hunter, having worked for them in San Diego and Washington, D.C., for 17 years. Lincoln’s assassination dramatically and suddenly changed the course of the nation’s history. Harrison has met several Lincoln authors in Washington, D.C. Books such as Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing Lincoln” have added to the understanding of such pivotal characters as John Wilkes Booth and Dr. Samuel Mudd, states a news release from the historical society. For more information, call the museum at 760-7897644.

Man holds family hostage, bites officer A 19-year-old suicidal man was hospitalized in stable condition after he briefly held three adult family members and two young children hostage in a Ramona apartment before injuring his throat with an 8-inch knife and biting a sheriff’s sergeant, authorities said. Deputies were called to the apartment in the 700 block of A Street around 6:40 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego County sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Vengler. The caller said that his 19-year-old nephew, Irvin Moreno, was holding a knife to his own chest and would not let family members leave the apartment, Vengler said in a statement. Cal Fire ladders were set up to get the hostages out of the second-story apartment. The sergeant said two women and two children, ages 3 and 5, were rescued from the rear of the apartment, and the uncle who called 911 was rescued out the front of the apartment.

For nearly two hours, authorities worked to coax Moreno out of the apartment until he stabbed himself with a knife, and non-lethal measures were used to stop him from hurting himself further, Vengler

said. While deputies and paramedics rendered aid to Moreno, he became combative and bit a sheriff’s sergeant, causing an injury, Vengler said without elaboration.

Moreno was taken to Palomar Medical Center. He is expected to recover from his injuries, Vengler said.

Bill Gore support the ordinance, saying it would give the county a legal means of forcing retailers who sell the products out of business, said Cox. “That tool will allow us to hit businesses where it counts, if they don’t get it off the shelves,” Dumanis said. The state recently amended its Health and Safety Code to provide sanctions against the sale, distribution and possession of synthetic cannabinoids and synthetic stimulants. Cox and Dumanis credited Assemblyman Ben Hueso, D-San Diego, who authored AB 486, for the “heavy lifting” in changing state law. According to the letter from Dumanis and Gore, the American Association of Poison Control Centers last year received 6,702 calls about bath salts, up from 303 calls in 2010. Cox said the synthetic stimulants were “popular, cheap, easily available and dangerous to the user to the point of causing seizures and being potentially lethal, as well as dangerous to the community.” The board voted unanimously to direct the chief administrative officer to have a draft ordinance ready for review in 60 days.

Five Reasons to FIRE your Trainer, Gym, Diet I always love reviewing this subject with my staff because it makes us take a hard look at what we are doing and how we can improve and be world class. We are going to look at each of these to dissect and dismantle them so you can achieve your goals whatever they may be. Let’s first take a look at the trainer. You may have had a trainer in the past, have one now,

or may be thinking of hiring one in the future, so take notes and keep these in mind when the time comes. Five Reasons to Fire your Trainer: 1.They don’t set goals and measure progress. You must know where you want to go and monitor your achievements. 2.They show up late. Tardiness is unacceptable.

Obviously there can be unforseen cicumstances and emergencies, but come every week? We adhere to a three strikes and you’re out with our staff and you should do the same with a trainer. 3.They answer their phone during a session. Come on! Wherever you are, BE ALL THERE! This also pertains to body language. No leaning, sitting or staring off into space. Your trainer must be all in, focused on you and totally present. 4.They give you a one size fits all routine. My staff and I do follow a format with all of our clients that we have created as a team and feel it aides in consistency, but we always mod-

ify as needed and make changes based on the individual, their goals and limitations and level. 5.Your personalities don’t match. This really is critical. You are going to spend 1-4 hours with this person every week and you have to have some level of “chemistry.” Let’s move on to your gym. 1.It’s dirty. Check the bathrooms and locker areas. 2.They don’t know your name. It doesn’t matter if it’s a corporate “Big Box” or mom and pop — if they don’t know you, they don’t love you. 3.They don’t offer help. If they only help you when your wallet is out, then you get out! Don’t be a free-

loader, but they should definitely offer periodic help if needed. 4.Two or more pieces of equipment are always broken. I just spent $200,000 on all new cardio equipment just for this reason. We couldn’t keep up with the repairs and our service quality was suffering. 5.You haven’t seen any re-investment in the physical plant. Is your gym the same as it was 5,10,15 years ago? Diet is a four letter word and I do not teach diet plans but eating plans, but there are definitely some plans out there that can jump-start your progress. 1.Your diet requires you to cut out whole food groups. “Really? I can’t eat fruit?” 2.Cuts your calories below 1,200 per day. You start going this low and half or more of the weight you are going to lose will be lean body-mass. 3.Give you a binge and

19

gorge day. What kind of eating plan starts off by saying eat everything in sight for the next two days?? Three letters — HCG. 4.Promises huge results with little change. The old adage anything worth having is going to take hard work holds true here. 5.If it’s the latest fad diet. Fad is defined as a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., especially one followed enthusiastically by a group. Fads diets are temporary and may produce results, but are not long-term solutions. A long-term solution would be to eat from a variety of food groups and monitor the quality and quantity. Take a look at these areas and start making some changes. Good luck and please check out my new website www.ramonastrainer.com for articles, workouts, videos and how you can get started on your path to you, only better!

A:

Well staying with her is a decision you will have to make. However, let me just share a couple of thoughts with you. You don’t just marry the girl, you marry her family. Chances are the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. If she comes from a close family that talk openly, then chances are that is the life she probably wants. Spending more time with them is an opportunity for you to grow within yourself to experience a different family with different values and views. Don’t be afraid to let them know you are uncomfortable. If they are used to talking about anything, then they will probably be very understanding. You might find a place to express many thoughts, feelings and ideas. Don’t be afraid of something that is different than what you grew up with. She in turn will have to do the same when she is around your family and their values. Learning to respect the differences is an important skill that you need to develop. You picked each other for a reason and maybe that reason is to grow!

I DON’T KNOW

Ask Karen!

Q:

I have been dating my girlfriend for over six months. I really like her and I think that I am falling in love with her. Things were going well until recently when I met her family. Her parents and siblings are liberal and talk about anything from sex to religion especially at the dinner table. I was raised in a very conservative family that rarely talks about anything. I am uncomfortable when they ask me my thoughts and a little embarrassed by the conversation. I really like her but not sure I can handle such liberal conversations. Should I stay with her?

Cagers end regular season Friday By BILL TAMBURRINO Coach David Reichner has substituted liberally all season but this week the first-year Ramona High boys basketball head coach used a ploy that resembled a hockey team changing on the fly. The Dawgs substituted five at a time to step up the tempo on offense and defense as they lost to Westview High School on the road and Poway in the Dawg House. The team is now 7-17 on the year and are 0-8 in the Palomar League. Westview High School shut down the Ramona Bulldog offense and defeated the Bulldogs on the road 69-34. Westview got off to a strong start and led the Dawgs 26-7 after one pe-

riod of play. The Wolverine defense held the Bulldog offense to single digits in each of the first three quarters of play and the final period was played with a running clock. Chris Durham led the Bulldogs in scoring. The senior forward contributed 11 points against the Wolverines (20-5, 7-1). Durham also led the Dawgs in rebounding with four. He contributed a steal on defense. Junior guard Zach White scored 8 points, grabbed three rebounds and had one steal. Travis Stevens scored 8 points, had three boards with a steal and an assist. Kwayde Miller (5) and Ryan Heiar (2) also scored for the Bulldogs. Ramona made a complete turnaround in its first home game in three weeks

and played well against Poway High School (18-9, 6-2) in a 57-47 loss in the Dawg House. The Bulldogs led for most of the first half as they got off to an 18-11 lead going into the second quarter and took a 29-26 lead into the locker room at intermission. The Bulldog offense struggled in the third quarter as the Dawgs were outscored 12-3 and lost the lead. They made runs at the Titans in the final period but could not regain the lead. Jonathan Schirer led the Bulldogs with 9 points. The senior wingman also had a blocked shot and two steals on defense. Forward Chris Durham had 8 points with three rebounds and three blocked shots on defense.

Stevens, Miller and White contributed six points apiece to the cause. Stevens also led the team with six rebounds. He dished off two assists and blocked two shots and had three steals on defense. Jordan Farhat and Matt Lawler scored 4 points apiece and Hunter Rowe and Heiar scored two points apiece. The team’s aggressive defense kept them in the game. Despite giving away four inches in height and a big weight disadvantage, Matt Lawler did an outstanding job of denying 6-foot-10 Sam Beeler the ball. Ramona will end its regular season in the Dawg House on Friday against Torrey Pines. It will be Senior Night for the Dawgs.

Ramona’s Devin Rhodes scores points in his 9-2 decision over Mt. Carmel’s Chase Eckman in the 182-pound bout.

Wrestlers lose controversial match By BILL TAMBURRINO Ramona’s wrestling match against Mt. Carmel had it all: excitement, great wrestling, a dramatic finish and unfortunately, controversy and displays of poor sportsmanship. The Feb. 9 match, which ended in Mt. Carmel’s favor, started with the 106 bout. Mt. Carmel took a 0-3 lead when Ben Kim won decision over Ramona’s Vince Adair. Martin Dower (115) battled for a decision over Kai Larson to tie the score at 3. The Mount bounced back and took the lead when Daniel Matson beat Beau Bailey in the 120 bout. The Sundevils then took the 126 bout when Abbas Hussaine won a decision over Zach Lane. Going into the 132 bout, the Sundevils had a 3-9 lead and momentum. Kevin Conroy cut into that lead

and changed the momentum with a major decision over Kevin Dong to make it a 7-9 match. Isaiah Ilich recorded a major decision over Jun Bae in the 138 bout to give the Bulldogs an 11-9 lead. The momentum had shifted to the Bulldogs. Troy Jordan (145) recorded a decision over Adam Kim and Kirk Kaliszewski (152) won a last second decision over Adrian Orgas and the Dawgs led 17-9. The Mount countered and stopped the momentum in the 160 bout. Scott Valente refused to get pinned and battled one of the Mount’s best wrestlers, Yama Fahim, before losing a major decision. The score was 17-13 Ramona when the controversy entered the gym. Jacob Grybow and Kai Abuan squared off in a very tough and wellwrestled bout in the 170 class. Gry-

bow was injured and yelled out in pain. As he was being attended to by Mt. Carmel’s athletic trainer, the Mount Carmel stands mocked him and taunted him. Later the Sundevil coach apologized to Coach Steve Koch for the incident and Koch acknowledged that it was not the coach’s fault. It took coaches from Mt. Carmel to stop the taunting. Enter the controversy. Despite being hurt, Grybow continued to wrestle and was pinned on a quick call by the official. Some observers believe the official was trying to protect Grybow from further injury with his call. The pin gave the Sundevils a 19-17 lead. Before the 182 bout got under way, an adult from the stands came onto the mat and confronted the official. Both schools were seated on See WRESTLIING on page 23

Bulldog boys tie Titans in soccer By JOE NAIMAN When Poway High School’s boys soccer team traveled to Ramona for a Feb. 9 game against the Bulldog squad, the Titans led the Palomar League standings and were ranked fourth in San Diego County, 19th in the state and 36th in the nation. Although Ramona was not able to hold a 1-0 halftime lead, the game ended as a 1-1 tie. “It was a huge tie for us,” said “It was a huge Coach Michael Jordan. “We hung with tie for us.” them.” Coach Michael Jordan B u l l d o g s , T h e w h o s e game Feb. 7 was a 3-1 road loss at Westview, ended the week with a 2-5-1 Palomar League record and a 9-10-3 overall performance for the season. Westview had all of the second-half scoring after the Feb. 7 game was tied at halftime. Jordan noted that the difference between Ramona and its opponents is depth at the premier club league level. “They have one stud after the next that can go in there,” Jordan said of Westview and Poway. Westview scored the first goal of the game, but the Bulldogs attained the equalizer after Carlos Blanco brought the ball up the flank and sent it toward Julio Velasco. “Julio just went up and just won the ball in the air,” Jordan said. Velasco redirected the header into the net to create a 1-1 game, which was the score when the halftime whistle blew. “We just couldn’t hold them off,” Jordan said. “Westview’s a very good team.” Jordan is not disappointed with the loss to the See BOYS SOCCER on page 23

Girls soccer has two 1-goal losses By JOE NAIMAN Although Ramona High School’s girls soccer team lost its Feb. 7 home game against Westview and its Feb. 9 match at Poway, both losses were by only one-goal margins. “Both were very close games,” said Assistant Coach Rod Vandervort. “The girls played very good soccer. We’re very encouraged by the games this past week.” The home game was

played on a rainy day. “The turf was a little slick,” Vandervort said. That didn’t keep the teams from playing a close game. Bulldog goalkeeper Maria Solis made 12 saves, including eight in the first half. Solis also had the help of sweeper Lexi Hogan, outside defenders Emily Vandervort and Briana Gansch, stopper Bianca Scodellaro, defensive midfielder Julie Voorhes, and midfielder/defender Katie White.

Water Dawgs finish regular season 14-15 By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s girls water polo team finished the 2011-12 regular season with a 14-15 overall record. The Bulldogs’ record was 1-9 in Palomar League play, which concluded Feb. 9. Ramona closed out the regular season with two home matches, a 5-2

loss to Westview and a 9-7 defeat against Mount Carmel. Westview scored the first quarter’s only goal and led 3-1 when the halftime buzzer sounded. “We let them get out a little bit early,” said Coach Donnie Williams. The 5-2 final score was See WATER POLO on page 33

“Our defense did a good job,” Vandervort said. “Even offensively we controlled the ball much better than we did in the first game against them.” Ramona’s only goal Jan. 19 during a 6-1 loss at Westview was on a free kick. The lack of a goal Feb. 7 didn’t translate into a lack of execution by the Bulldogs. “When we did get the ball, we did a good job of connecting short passes,” Vandervort said. The Wolverines scored the game’s only goal about 15 minutes into the second half. “They centered it with a nice pass,” Vandervort said. “We had our defense in pretty decent position. They just made a nice play.” The deficit didn’t adversely affect the Bulldogs’ confidence. “Even after they were up, we still played pretty well,” Vandervort said. The Bulldogs overcame a Poway lead in the 2-1 game Feb. 9. The Titans

scored the game’s first goal on a cross play about 18 minutes into the game. Approximately seven minutes later, Karli Njaa advanced the ball downfield before finding that Samantha Schmidt was able to take a shot from about 27 yards out. Njaa gave Schmidt the opportunity for a goal, and Schmidt placed the ball into the top right corner of the net. “She just nailed it,” Vandervort said. The Titans had the second half’s only score. “The second half we battled back and forth. Both teams had a few opportunities,” Vandervort said. Solis made 13 saves against Poway. The losses gave Ramona a 9-11-1 overall season record and a Palomar League figure of 0-7-1. Thursday will be Senior Night when the Bulldogs close out their regular season at home against Torrey Pines. The CIF playoff selection and seeding meeting will take place Saturday.

Youth Basketball League Standouts of the Week Cameron Necochea

Mackenzie Griffin

Cam, a sixth-grader at Barnett Elementary, has helped the Dawgs to a 6-1 record this year so far. He is in the top 5 for points in the division. While he plays just about any sport you can imagine, his first love is football. Cam has played football since age 5 and most recently played quarterback and safety for the Jr. Pee Wee Dawg Pound. He is great with his brother Carson, who is autistic, working with him to build and film Lego movies with their iPads. When he is not playing basketball, Cam loves to drive his mom crazy and hang out with his friends and family.

Mackenzie is in the top three for points in her division with 69 points so far this season. She is an eighth-grader at Olive Peirce Middle School where she has maintained a 4.0 GPA for two years. Her favorite subjects are math, English and history. When Mackenzie is not playing basketball, she is a goal keeper on her soccer team. She also enjoys playing volleyball for OPMS. On the weekends Mackenzie keeps busy with her friends and her little sister.

Wolverines. “The boys play above their head and they play inspired,” he said. Any discomfort Jordan had was physical, as the game was played during rainfall. “It was a miserable night,” he said. A back injury kept Ramona center-midfielder Morgan Schmidt from playing in any of the Bulldogs’ first 17 games, and a minor injury Feb. 2 limited his on-field play to about a third of the match, but he recorded his first assist of the season Feb. 9 against the Titans. “He broke down the defense, beat the defense,” Jordan said. “He is just such a playmaker.” g

the same side of the gym, and it was believed that the woman was a Ramona supporter. The woman was asked to leave and was escorted from the gym by the Mt. Carmel administrator in charge. Devin Rhodes went on to beat Chase Eckman by decision and Ramona regained the lead 20-19. Josh Allen pinned Adrian Teran in 5:51 in the 195 bout and Ramona led 2619. Mt. Carmel was penalized a team point and the score became 26-18. Andy Burns lost a technical fall to Nathan Sylvia in the 220 bout and the match came down to the heavyweight bout. Ramona led 26-23. Any win would give the Bulldogs the match. A decision by the Mount would tie the match. A major decision, technical fall or a pin would give the Sundevils the match. Jureall Simmons and Mt. Carmel’s Michael Chevalier went at it. Both wrestlers gave it their all and with 2.4 seconds left on the clock Chevalier recorded a pin to give the Sundevils the match 29-26. After the match, players on both teams shook hands and displayed good sportsmanship. After the post-match

Schmidt determined that Andy Garcia had a better chance of putting the ball into the net and made the appropriate pass. Garcia then beat the goalkeeper to give Ramona the lead. The Titans scored the equalizer in the second half. “We held them off, and we ended up with a draw,” Jordan said. “We drew with the first-place team, which was pretty impressive.” The Bulldogs close out the regular season Thursday at Torrey Pines. Saturday’s CIF playoff selection and seeding meeting will determine the Bulldogs’ future 2011-12 competition.

From page 22 handshake, Mt. Carmel’s administrator in charge confronted Coach Koch and demanded the name of the woman who was escorted out of the gym after the 170 pound bout. Koch said that he would find out the name and give it to him if he would give Koch the names of the Mt. Carmel spectators who mocked his injured wrestler. Koch also told the official that the official did nothing to stop the poor sportsmanship and it took Mt. Carmel’s coaches to stop the jeering. After the exchange of words, the two separated without any further conversation as two Ramona wrestlers carried Jacob Grybow to his mother’s vehicle so that he could go to the emergency room. “The referee made a judgment call. He is a good official,” said Koch. “I did not agree with the call, but it was made. That is not what I was upset with. That Mt. Carmel official did nothing to stop his fans from jeering my injured athlete. That is what upset me. “The Mount Carmel wrestlers and coaches showed class during and after the match. I can’t same the same for that official.”

Ramona Sentinel

Athlete OF THE WEEK

Kim Whelehon leads by example Editor’s Note: Kim was last week’s Ramona Sentinel Athlete of the Week. Due to limited space in our Feb. 9 issue, we are publishing her article this week. It has been on the Sentinel website, www.ramonasentinel.com. By BILL TAMBURRINO

K

im Whelehon is not a vocal leader. She leads by working hard and by setting an example. The senior captain of the Lady Bulldog basketball team does the tough jobs on the hardwood for which stats are not kept. She goes to the floor

for loose balls. She takes the charge. She plays tenacious defense. She also does well in categories for which stats are kept. Kim leads the Lady Bulldogs in points per game, averaging 13.1. She has hit a team high 37 3-point shots and leads the team in free throws made with 37. She shoots 63 percent from the charity stripe. Those stats were before Ramona played Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo. Kim scored 10 points against Mt. Carmel and 22 in the Lady Dawg’s victory over Rancho Ber-

nardo. She grabbed two boards against Mt. Carmel and three against the Broncos. She had two steals at The Mount and three at RB. The numbers are not the whole story. There is that intangible called leadership. Coach Ken Scheib is coaching Kim for the first time. “She is a quiet leader,” he said.” What speaks loudly about her leadership is how hard she works. She always does what is asked of her and does it with zeal.” “Kim is very consistent,” said Coach Erin O’Connor. “She plays and practices consistent-

ly at a high level. She is a pleasure to coach and a great example for the younger players.” When asked what her

role as a leader is, Kim replied, “My job is to keep the team’s spirit up. This is a team that sticks together. They do

31

as much for me as I do for them. “ Kim explained how her coaches have helped her become a leader. “Coach O’Connor is easy to talk to and she would do anything to help us in any way,” she said. “Coach Spooner is really funny. When Coach O’Connor gets mad, Coach Spooner will do something to make us all laugh. Coach Scheib always pushes us hard but he, too, has a good sense of humor. It is fun playing for them.” Kim made the trip to the Hall of Champions with five other Bulldogs who have signed letters of intent to play sports in college. Kim Whelehon fits in well at the Hall of Champions. That is why she is the Ramona Sentinel Athlete of the Week.

Bernard “Ben” John Wier 1927 – 2012

Ben Wier, 84, an Aerospace Engineer in career and golfer in passion, passed away on January 27, 2012, in San Diego. Ben was born in Buffalo, NY, on August 12, 1927. After a brief tour in the Navy, he attended the University of Buffalo where he earned a degree in engineering. Ben came to San Diego in 1956 to join General Dynamics. His early days with General Dynamics were as a test engineer in the early development

of the Atlas Rocket. His career progressed to include positions as Launch Conductor at Vandenberg AFB where one of his favorite duties was pushing the launch button when the countdown hit ‘0’. Later, he was Program Manager for the Atlas. Ben received a new challenge as Director of Production for the Tomahawk Cruise Missile where he was responsible for the production of the first 1000 missiles. With successful completion of the Tomahawks, he moved back to the Atlas rocket program as Vice President, Program Director Space Systems division where he stayed until his retirement in 1993. In 2011, Ben was given a lifetime achievement award from the AIAA. He was instrumental in developing and launching Atlas rockets for the space race, Mercury manned orbital missions, Cruise missiles, weather, television, spy satellites and other space projects benefiting mankind. In 2011, Ben also dedicated the Atlas Rocket Exhibit at the Balboa Park Air and Space Museum with a packed audience of mostly retired ex-Convair/GD people in attendance – the major San Diego employer from the 1940’s through 90’s. He had a great effect on aerospace as a rocket pioneer and in the San Diego area, as a great leader with his enormous successes at Convair/General Dynamics. Because of his influence on many and his many

contributions in the history of successful Atlas Rocket launches, the President of United Launch Alliance Co. will dedicate the next Atlas Launch at Cape Canaveral in April in memory of Ben Wier. His real passion after retirement was traveling the world and golfing. He could be found at Stoneridge Country Club at least 3 to 4 days per week on the golf course. When not on the golf course, he would be spending time with his family. He also was master at the BBQ and social events, which many dinners were prompted by his desire to BBQ for family and friends. Ben is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ann; brother, Stanley Wier; daughter, Carol Close; sons, Brian Wier, Mark Wier, and Benjamin Wier; nine grandchildren, Charles, Caitlin, Collin and Connor Close of Ramona, and Brice, Jessica, Blaise, Briana and Jordan Wier of Escondido; and one greatgrandson. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, 2001 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101-1636. also the Wolverines’ margin of lead after the third period. “It was a good game,” Williams said. “I thought we played solid, just like we always do with Westview. It’s just a matter of us on our offensive side being productive.” Ramona took 28 shots against Westview in the

28 minutes of play. “Just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Williams said. Ramona’s first-round game against Mount Carmel was a 10-6 loss Jan. 24. The Sundevils had a 6-2 halftime lead in that game. In the second-round game, Ramona led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 6-3 at

halftime. “We started off really strong,” Williams said. “The third quarter killed us.” Ramona held on to a 7-6 lead when the buzzer sounded to end the third period. Early in the fourth quarter the Sundevils were awarded a five-meter penalty shot and converted that opportunity for a goal. Williams noted that other

officiating calls went against Ramona. “I don’t always want to blame the ref, but they were momentum-changes,” he said. Mt. Carmel scored two more goals to close out the game’s offense. “I thought we had that game, said Williams. The Feb. 9 game was Senior Night. The Bulldogs hon-

Athlete OF THE WEEK

Jesse Bonilla keeps Ramona in the game By JOE NAIMAN

I

n the opinion of Ramona High School boys soccer coach Michael Jordan, sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Bonilla is worthy of Ramona Sentinel’s Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 6-11. Bonilla made six saves against Westview in Ramona’s 3-1 road loss Feb. 7 while allowing only one first-half goal. Ramona’s Feb. 9 home game against Poway saw the Bulldogs record a 1-1 tie against a team ranked fourth

in the county and 36th in the nation, and Bonilla’s performance against the Titans included seven saves. “Without Jesse we would be conceding a lot of goals,” said Jordan. “He keeps us in the game.” Bonilla had impressed Jordan long before the matches with Westview and Poway. He earned the starting goalkeeper role as a freshman during the 2010-11 season. He had three solo shutouts, and in two additional shutout wins he was rested in the

second half. Palomar League coaches gave Bonilla honorable mention all-league recognition, making him the league’s only freshman to earn all-league designation. During the pre-league portion of 2011-12 play, Bonilla had three shutouts, not including a team shutout against Calexico Mission in which Jordan played all of his substitutes in the second half. “When he does let a goal go in, it doesn’t shake him,” Jordan said. “He’s so confident and so composed.” Backup goalie Jason Morton was ill and unable to play Feb. 2, when Ramona defeated Rancho Bernardo on the road. During that game a Bronco attacker slid into Bonilla, injuring the goalie to the
